00:01I'm Jane MacDonald.
00:03Let's go exploring!
00:05And I'm on a trans-global trip of a lifetime.
00:09Oh, wow! Look!
00:11What the hell are we doing out here?
00:13Seeing incredible sights.
00:15This is paradise. It's heaven.
00:18It's heaven.
00:19Meeting amazing people.
00:21Can I have a hug off all of you?
00:23And having unforgettable experiences.
00:26Ah-ha-ha!
00:28I'd only dreamed about.
00:31Come here.
00:32Oh, it's a pleasure.
00:34Cheers!
00:36This is Jane MacDonald.
00:38From pole to pole.
00:45Woo-hoo!
00:47My adventure began in the largely unexplored southernmost continent in the world.
00:52We have conquered Antarctica.
00:55Whoa!
00:57Aboard my Discovery yacht, I've made new mates.
01:00Here's to adventure.
01:01And here's to new friendships.
01:03Yes, definitely.
01:04I've been up close and personal with awe-inspiring wildlife.
01:08They are huge.
01:10Look at those!
01:11Travelling from Uruguay to Brazil.
01:14I'm taking a leap of faith in Latin America.
01:18Way!
01:19What is the 1600s?
01:20Yeah!
01:21But you look so cool!
01:22I've only skimmed the surface of Brazil.
01:25So I'm sticking around to discover more of the places we don't often hear about.
01:30I don't know if you've ever seen a film called An Affair to Remember, but I always remember the romantic film and this beautiful scenery coming in and I just think, gosh, I hope I get to go there one day.
01:49And it was just like that film.
01:55We are sailing into Ilabela.
01:57What a beautiful name.
01:59Where the mist and the clouds are kissing the top of the mountains and the waves are lapping luxuriously against the ship.
02:06Oh, I love Brazil!
02:12For the first time on this journey, I'm treading a more traditional tourist trail, but some of the places I'll visit might just surprise you.
02:22So I'm starting on the island of Ilabela, part of an archipelago just off the coast of Sao Paulo.
02:29From here, I'll head north to the mangroves of Parachi, then the beautiful Buzios Peninsula, and on to my final Brazilian checkpoint, Rio de Janeiro.
02:42You must be Duda!
02:43Yes, that's me! You must be Jane!
02:45I am! How are you?
02:46Nice to meet you!
02:47Nice to meet you!
02:48Lovely to see you!
02:49Thank you!
02:50We're going on a jeep too?
02:51Yes, let's go!
02:52Come on!
02:53As I'm writing the playbook for my trip, I've asked local guide Duda to surprise me with a private tour of the best bits of Ilabela.
03:02That's exciting, isn't it?
03:03And here we go!
03:04Woohoo!
03:08Ilabela is officially called Ilha de São Sebastião, with around 40 beaches spread along its coastline.
03:15Oh, look! There's a whole town!
03:17The island was first discovered in 1502 by a Portuguese expedition, who described it as paradise on earth.
03:26So it's no wonder Ilabela has become a popular holiday destination.
03:30This is the historical centre of the island. This is where the story of the island began.
03:35Right!
03:36So the houses that we have in here are more antique.
03:40Uh-huh.
03:41This used to be a jail.
03:42Uh-huh.
03:43And now it works like a museum. And this is the church of the island as well.
03:49Lovely!
03:50Our Lady of Help.
03:52That's lovely. We all need that.
03:55Duda tells me the Lady of Help, or the Virgin Mary, was named by early Portuguese settlers and is the patron saint of the island.
04:04They had, like, a tradition to name the places they discovered with the name of the saint of the day.
04:11Right!
04:12So we have the island of São Sebastião, we have the city of São Sebastião, the highest peak of Ilabela is the peak of São Sebastião.
04:21All right!
04:22And we have the canal that, guess what?
04:24São Sebastião!
04:25No!
04:26No!
04:27No!
04:28No!
04:29It's the canal of Toki Toki.
04:30Oh, look!
04:31That is a beach from São Sebastião.
04:33I like to do this joke.
04:35You did it!
04:36I fell for it.
04:37I fell for it.
04:38Yes.
04:39So, if you look up, you can see that, like, the mountains that you...
04:50Yes!
04:51We do not have a lot of houses building on top of the island or after a certain height.
04:56That's good!
04:57This is because it's the preservation area.
04:59What a good idea!
05:01In fact, more than 80% of the island is designated as a protected area to preserve the biodiversity.
05:10It feels beautifully unspoiled.
05:13This is the Bells Beach.
05:16Fantastic!
05:18There's a lot of beaches, and I'm not exactly sure why Dudaz brought me to this one.
05:23So, now we are going to see some rocks.
05:25Some rocks?
05:26Yes.
05:27Okay.
05:28These are not usual rocks.
05:29They make sounds like bells.
05:32Oh!
05:33Once the villagers were sleeping, and they woke up to the sound of bells.
05:38We're like, what is happening here?
05:40We do not have any bells.
05:42And then the natives were screaming and pointing at those rocks and screaming, garapocaia, garapocaia.
05:49That means rocks that sing.
05:52Singing rocks?
05:53Singing rocks.
05:54Oh, well, meant to be.
05:55Because of that sound, they were able to defend themselves from pirate attack.
06:00Really?
06:01That was going to happen.
06:02Oh, wow.
06:03Yeah.
06:05Do you want to try it?
06:06Can I?
06:07Of course.
06:08Careful, it's really heavy.
06:11Oh, yeah.
06:12That's definitely the sound.
06:14Yes, it is.
06:15You can try on other parts of the rock as well.
06:18Blimey, that's heavy.
06:19Yes, it is.
06:20Yes, it is.
06:24Can you do it?
06:25Of course.
06:27Oh!
06:28Oh, no.
06:30Wow.
06:31We've lost the clangor.
06:34We've lost the guide and we've lost the clangor.
06:36This is classic Duda.
06:39Oh, dear.
06:41Oh!
06:42The highest one is this one.
06:45Are they hollow?
06:46No.
06:47No?
06:48Because of the granulation of the rock.
06:49Uh-huh.
06:50If you put your hands, you can see that it's really thin.
06:53Yeah.
06:54They say that...
06:55Oh, yeah.
06:56In other places of the world, they use this to make musical instruments.
07:01Oh, wow!
07:02Singing rocks, I would have thought that.
07:04Thank you so much.
07:07It was quite mystical.
07:09You bang these rocks and it's like a church band.
07:11How amazing.
07:13Great shopping centre as well, so I did buy a couple of shirts.
07:16Very happy.
07:19Ooh!
07:23The Jeep tour was quite bouncy.
07:26I just got hit by a Jeep.
07:30I thought we had a lot of potholes, but they've got a lot of potholes here as well.
07:36But with scenery like this, I don't mind.
07:40So, this is the viewpoint that I was telling you about, the Mirante do Barreiros.
07:45Across the canal, we have the city of San Sebastian.
07:48A little more there, we have Caraguatatuba.
07:50Right.
07:51That is cloudy right now.
07:52It is not...
07:53But it's definitely there.
07:54It's there, yes.
07:56If you believe very strongly...
07:57OK.
07:58There's like little veils everywhere of mist that come down and just, all of a sudden, they unveil themselves.
08:13This is a very romantic place here.
08:15You can see why.
08:16It is very, very beautiful.
08:18Yes, it is.
08:19Well, thank you so much for such a lovely tour today.
08:23I could not be happier.
08:24I appreciate it a lot.
08:26Thank you, Duda.
08:27Bless you.
08:28Bless you too.
08:29All right.
08:31Looking out to the sea and the mountains and the ship and the breeze, and it was perfect, really.
08:41I'm just going to take a moment to drink it all in.
08:47Cheers.
08:48Well, it's almost midday.
08:53I'm in!
08:56Coming up, I head to the mangroves of Parachie.
08:59Ah-ha-ha!
09:00Ah!
09:01To kayak in nature's playground.
09:03I didn't know that crabs could climb trees.
09:06And I get to picnic with a desert island dish.
09:09It's a bit like Robinson Crusoe.
09:11You're my man Friday.
09:12The guy with the coconut.
09:13Mmm!
09:14Feels a bit that way.
09:24It's a new day, and what a view to wake up to.
09:27I'm over halfway through my pole-to-pole voyage, currently sailing along the coast of Brazil.
09:33I'm in Parachie, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Costa Verde.
09:40I've always wanted to explore this lush green corridor that runs alongside the coastline, famous for its biodiversity.
09:48Parachie sits on the bay of Isla Grande.
09:52It's dotted with many tropical islands and is about 154 miles from the city of Rio de Janeiro.
09:59Parachie is all built on rivers, and they call it Little Venice.
10:06We were extremely lucky to get in, and I thought this will be good.
10:13Hi, Felipe.
10:14Yes, I am.
10:15I'm Jane.
10:16Good to meet you.
10:17How are you?
10:18Very well, and you?
10:19I'm good, OK.
10:21So today, I'm pushing the boat out.
10:23Or rather, my guide Felipe is.
10:25Going to the mangroves?
10:26Yes.
10:27Mangrove.
10:28I want to say man's grove every time.
10:30It's mangrove.
10:31Well, in Portuguese it's manguezau, but in English it's mangrove.
10:35Mangrove.
10:36OK, let's go.
10:37Let's go.
10:38Several guides offer tours to the narrow channels where land meets sea, but they're only wide
10:43enough for a kayak, so we're heading to pick ours up.
10:47So here in this bay area is 65 islands.
10:50Right.
10:51The big one out there is manchimento.
10:54Manchimento means groceries.
10:56Right.
10:57So the ships from Portugal, when they bring the groceries, they unload in there.
11:01Uh-huh.
11:02Because here it's shallow, and then from there it comes on the smaller boats or canoes,
11:06and they could go up on the channels or up on the streets when the tide is up.
11:11Ah.
11:12So you get everything you need here?
11:14Yeah.
11:15Sounds like a great place to live.
11:17Yeah, it's good.
11:18Supplies were brought in by large ships for centuries, even gold.
11:24But now these biodiverse waters are protected.
11:28Some of the islands is an ecological station.
11:31It's like one kilometre around the island.
11:33You can do nothing.
11:34Wow.
11:35No fishing, no snorkelling, even pulling the anchor out is against the law.
11:39Right.
11:40It's just for the fish to reproduce and for the scientists to do research.
11:44So here we can see in between the hills.
11:47Uh-huh.
11:48The lower area, the vegetation with a different grain, that's the mangroves.
11:52Ah.
11:53What are the mangroves?
11:55Mangrove is one ecosystem.
11:57Very special because it's full of kind of species that lives only there.
12:03Uh-huh.
12:04Crabs, birds, mussels, shrimps, and lobsters.
12:10Everything goes to the mangroves to reproduce.
12:13Right.
12:14So, Dion Felipe, we've only just met.
12:17Which one you like better, the green or the pink?
12:20Well, green to match...
12:22OK.
12:23...match my clothes, obviously.
12:25I thought to myself, well, if I fall out here, at least I'm a relatively good swimmer.
12:32Sit, sit, sit, sit.
12:33Sit, sit.
12:34You can do it like this.
12:35And the water's warm.
12:36So I wasn't as scared...
12:39...this time...
12:40I'm in!
12:41...than I was in Antarctica in the kayaking.
12:44Oh, my God!
12:45Ah!
12:46Oh!
12:47Whoa!
12:48Sorry about that!
12:49I'm not gonna die, which is always a good thing to have.
12:54So I'm gonna synchronize with you.
12:57Oh, dear.
12:58And then it's gonna look like we know what we're doing.
13:02OK.
13:03Which is absolute rubbish.
13:05Yeah.
13:06There you go.
13:07Perfect.
13:08Very slowly.
13:09OK.
13:13Gosh, look at this.
13:15We got this, like, built-in area.
13:20Ooh!
13:21Which was, like, a little tunnel.
13:24I'm so pleased he knows how to drive this.
13:27Because I don't!
13:29The leaves and the trees made, like, a little archway,
13:34where you could literally just get in with a kayak.
13:38Oh, sorry.
13:40No problem.
13:41And this is bromelia.
13:44It's a type of a plant that doesn't need to root.
13:48Under the bromelia is a red crab.
13:50Oh, yeah.
13:51Yeah, you see it?
13:52Oh!
13:53Just move it back.
13:54Move it back.
13:55There you go.
13:56Oh, that's the crab.
13:57Don't worry.
13:58They don't climb on us.
13:59Yeah.
14:00Look at that crab there.
14:01See?
14:02These are the crabs.
14:03I didn't know that crabs could climb trees.
14:05Yeah.
14:06Do they all climb trees?
14:08Well, there's some ones, they stay in the water full time.
14:12Uh-huh.
14:13And they're the ones that are, like, the filters.
14:15They eat all the bad stuff?
14:17Yeah.
14:18Everything that dies, leaves, animals, they're going to clean it up.
14:23They're kind of the vultures of the sea.
14:25Wow.
14:26And then we have another kind that is never in the water.
14:30I never knew that.
14:31But it was so special to see the crabs in there and learn about...
14:38Because it looks very dirty, did the water, but it wasn't dirty at all.
14:42It was so clean, the water.
14:44And it was the reflection of the mud and the clay that was underneath.
14:49So, Felipe, these mangroves, are they important to the environment?
14:55Yes, they are.
14:57They are very important to...
14:59If the water is clear in the reefs and you can go snorkeling,
15:04it's because the mangroves are filtering it.
15:07Oh, so it actually filters the water?
15:09It does, it does.
15:11These roots, there are two types of roots.
15:13One is the one that sustains the tree, that gives the shape of it.
15:18And the other ones are the nose or a kind of snorkel.
15:23It's like where they breathe through.
15:25Oh, wow.
15:27This is the spoonbill.
15:29Yeah, I can hear that.
15:31We have migratory birds that rest in the mangroves.
15:35They eat a lot, they twice their weight, and then they keep on travelling.
15:39Wow.
15:40I'm doing that on a cruise, eating twice my weight at the moment.
15:45Let's do some workout.
15:48Okay.
15:49Woo!
15:54All the experts say, get out into the fresh air and it will clear your head.
16:00And it was wonderful to be that in nature, did my mind a lot of good.
16:12Oh, sorry.
16:13No problem.
16:14You can go just a little more vertical.
16:17The pedal, one goes higher and the other goes lower, like vertically.
16:22Mais vertical.
16:23Ah, like that.
16:24Yeah, there you go, vertically.
16:26Ah-ha-ha!
16:27Ah-ha!
16:28I'll let you navigate us in.
16:33Woo!
16:35Woo!
16:37Oh, there you go.
16:38That's a lot easier, isn't it, eh?
16:39A lot easier.
16:40Legs first.
16:41Just legs first.
16:42One, two.
16:43Slide to the side.
16:44Okay.
16:45There you go.
16:46This could be difficult.
16:47Ah-ha-ha!
16:48Ah-ha-ha!
16:49Good job.
16:50High five.
16:51Hey!
16:52Thank you very much.
16:53What could possibly make today any better?
16:54Felipe is full of surprises.
16:55Oh, look at this.
16:56After all this workout, I have a little coconut for you.
17:00Oh, bless you!
17:01And a little snack.
17:02Thank you!
17:03A beach picnic!
17:04You use the soy sauce.
17:07Oh, soy sauce?
17:08Mm-hmm.
17:09For the carrot?
17:10And the cucumber and the coconut, and the coconut.
17:12Oh!
17:13Oh, yeah!
17:14Oh, yeah!
17:15Oh, yeah!
17:16Oh, yeah!
17:17Oh, yeah, yeah.
17:18Oh, yeah.
17:19And the coconut.
17:20Oh, yeah.
17:21Oh, yeah.
17:22Good job.
17:23High five.
17:24Thank you very much.
17:25What could possibly make today any better?
17:27and the cucumber and the coconut even the mangoes you can use the soy sauce
17:32like that mm-hmm well I've never done that before yeah try it out hmm I'd
17:38never had mango with soy sauce but I'll tell you what it was one of the most
17:43delicious things I've tasted I was like mango gorgeous try it it's really good
17:50so I'm on this trip pole to pole it seems to be a lot of people want to do
17:56this now they want to experience adventure and discover islands that well
18:02that what makes you alive it certainly does I'm feeling very alive and then me
18:07too yeah so this is all very good I learned such a lot how passionate he was
18:12about his island and how much studying he'd done to preserve it and to keep it
18:20as it is there's not a crab or a shrimp or a lobster inside not in there this is
18:28vegan now it's very popular to be vegan it is isn't it yeah oh I love coconut and I
18:36think that's what I'm really taking from this trip of Brazil this part of Brazil is
18:41is that people are very protective it's a bit like Robinson Crusoe do you know
18:48Robinson Crusoe you're my mom Friday the guy with the coconut mmm feels a bit that way I
18:54want to shout hallelujah from the biggest tallest mountain out there because I don't want it to

19:50a newfangled thing now on your phone called translate and I've just downloaded Portuguese
19:56Brazil because I don't speak Portuguese or Brazil well it is Portuguese in Brazil into it so I've downloaded

21:31There you go.
21:43Coming up.
21:44I believe it's very golden where people have touched you.
21:47I come face to face with a bonafide bombshell on one of the movie world's most famous icons.
21:53I'm just noticing that your lips are very golden.
21:56Have they been kissing you without your permission?
22:00Shocking.
22:01And I enjoy a blockbuster trolley bus tour of the beautiful beaches.
22:06Now, on your left side, you'll see the smallest beach here in Bozius, and it's called Seals Beach.
22:14In Portuguese, it's Foca.
22:17Having sailed 220 nautical miles along the coast, I'm refreshed, revitalized, and ready to explore a place I've longed to visit.
22:36I'm in the beautiful bay of Bozius in Brazil, and this is where Brigitte Bardot escaped all the paparazzi.
22:49She came here with a Brazilian boyfriend.
22:52Not a bad gig if you can get it, is it?
22:55A Brazilian boyfriend called Bob.
22:59That's not very Brazilian, is it?
23:01A Roberto, maybe? Roberto?
23:03Yeah.
23:04Yeah, Bob.
23:05For short.
23:06She had one friend who was a journalist, and he took lots and lots of pictures of her here, when it was just a little fishing village.
23:14And as you can see now, it's turned into one of the most famous places in Brazil.
23:25While not an island, Bozius has that vibe.
23:28It spans about 27 square miles on a small peninsula on Brazil's eastern coast.
23:3560 years since Brigitte Bardot visited, she's still the main attraction, with a life-size bronze statue on the waterfront.
23:43I believe it's very golden where people have touched you, and I'm just noticing that your lips are very golden.
23:51Have they been kissing you without your permission?
23:54Shocking.
23:57Nice outfit, by the way.
24:00She was wearing a pair of flip-flops and, like, a crocheted top and nothing underneath, because she's Brigitte Bardot and beautiful.
24:11She could put a bin bag on and she'd look great, wouldn't she?
24:15Nicknamed the Saint-Tropez of Brazil, with its breathtaking beaches and chic boutiques, of course it made it onto my bucket list.
24:24Oh, my God, look at this view.
24:27Right then, let's go.
24:30Hello.
24:31And one of the best ways for me and my shipmates to see Bozius...
24:34Hello, hello.
24:35..is hopping on board a trolley bus tour, led by local guide Hooley.
24:40I'll try to speak slowly and loud, OK?
24:46Sometimes, things don't go to plan.
24:50Unfortunately, the microphone doesn't work.
24:54It wasn't a proper trolley bus as we would think in, like, San Francisco or something like that.
25:00This is the prettiest boat we've been to.
25:02No, without a doubt.
25:04This was a truck.
25:06It was a truck with just a load of benches and a canopy on the top.
25:12But it's made it all the more exhilarating for me and my new pal, Melissa.
25:17It's the first proper resort town I've visited since starting my journey in Antarctica.
25:23Here we have 26 beaches.
25:27So, I'm just going to sit back and enjoy the ride.
25:34On your left side, you'll see the statue of the three fishermen.
25:40It was also made by Christina Motta, the same who made the statue of Brigitte.
25:46And it was made in honour of our fishermen here in the city.
25:52We might have a microphone that works now.
26:00Bless her.
26:01She's having to shout everything.
26:03Oi, oi.
26:04Hello.
26:05Yeah!
26:0695% of this neighbourhood are of B&Bs and hotels.
26:13And only 5% are for private residences.
26:18This artsy colonial town tends to be more affordable than many Caribbean and Mediterranean resorts.
26:30I know it sounds obvious, but parts of it reminded me of Cornwall because of the beautiful green hills going into the sea.
26:39I think we're on three-wheel on the way down.
26:42When you're up on the top of the hill, you know, there's that lovely breeze that is so refreshing up there.
26:51Look at that.
26:52Ooh.
26:53Yeah.
26:54In the end of December, until Carnival, we have a lot of people here in Buzos.
27:02So, sometimes, the traffic can make you stay for hours.
27:08That's also a long road.
27:22So now we are arriving at João Fernandes' viewpoint.
27:27João Fernandes' beach is popular for snorkeling, diving and kayaking.
27:32I think my white-knuckle trolley ride will do me today.
27:39I mean, look at this.
27:42It is, I think, the prettiest island we've come to so far.
27:47It's very beautiful.
27:51It was a beautiful view, right? Oh, yes.
27:53Lovely.
27:58It will be at Binlari now. That's nice.
28:01That's lovely, isn't it? Yeah.
28:03Little local culture.
28:05They're surely on the best side.
28:08So lovely.
28:09I like the fact that the bins are emptied on a Tuesday.
28:13Little things like that that Mecca's winning after.
28:15Absolutely.
28:16And shopping.
28:18Yeah, that's it.
28:19Shopping in shoes and bins.
28:20Yeah, shopping in shoes and bins.
28:22Got my new best mate.
28:24Oh, you are good. Thank you.
28:26Now we are at Anguys viewpoint.
28:28If you go up the viewpoint, it's really, really beautiful.
28:33She's right.
28:35This dramatic landscape where rugged cliffs meet tranquil turquoise waters takes your breath away.
28:40The time to come here is probably April and it's just perfect.
28:47Not too many people and you can get around and the temperature is perfect.
28:54Don't you think it looks like Cornwall? I think it looks like Cornwall.
28:57And we're off again.
28:58Wow.
28:59Oh, that's beautiful to deal with the ship.
29:00Now, on your left side, you'll see the smallest beach here in Bojos and it's called Seals Beach.
29:17In Portuguese, it's foca.
29:20It's a funny word in English.
29:23Yeah.
29:24So, I don't know what it means, but...
29:28That is foca beach.
29:30So...
29:32Less said about that, the better.
29:41Oh, bless you.
29:44You're so nice.
29:46Turns out some fellow travellers from my ship Scenic Eclipse were on board the bus, Dale and Frank.
29:52Whereabouts are you from?
29:54Nova Scotia, Canada.
29:55Oh, wow.
29:56Have you been to Brazil before?
29:57First time.
29:58First time.
29:59Every place that we've stopped, every port has had its own culture, I guess, its own vibe, its own feel.
30:06I don't know if you're like I am, but I'm a bit of a wanderlust now.
30:09I want to go and see as much as I possibly can.
30:12Learn more, yes, absolutely.
30:13Yeah.
30:14And it's great.
30:15We're retired now.
30:16That is our life now.
30:17And we love it.
30:18I think it's just the best thing to do.
30:20Absolutely.
30:21And all the people you meet along the way.
30:23It's just been amazing.
30:25Yeah.
30:26We love it.
30:27Oh, I'm so pleased you're enjoying it.
30:28Yeah, very much.
30:29Well, I think it's time for us to get back on board.
30:32Ah, okay.
30:33Let's get back on the bus.
30:34I'm really worried that we might have to get out and push this thing up.
30:37I know.
30:38Well, I was worried when we were going down.
30:40I hope he has good breaks.
30:42Ah!
30:43Come on, let's go.
30:44Sure.
30:45I would love to have stayed in Busios for at least three or four weeks.
30:52It's just got enough shops.
30:55Just enough bars.
30:57Oh.
30:58Oh.
30:59Ooh.
31:00Jeez.
31:01Thank you very much.
31:03Wow.
31:06Beautiful beaches.
31:07Gorgeous countryside.
31:09Lovely people.
31:12This is the Madame Bardot.
31:17A knockout blend of cachaça, lemon and sugar syrup.
31:21It's as tasty as she was.
31:29People seemed really happy there.
31:32I know I was.
31:34Here's to you, Bridget.
31:36And Bob.
31:42I bet Bridget travelled life.
31:44And wherever I go, I'm keen to do the same.
31:47I don't know about you, but I've always had a massive bag like this.
31:52When I'm travelling in the airport, I do need a big bag,
31:56because I put magazines in, I've got my passport, I've got my purse,
31:59I've got everything in there.
32:01But the trouble is, the bigger your bag, the more you'll put in it.
32:06This is the bag you should go out with.
32:08A little crossbody, these pouches that you can get now.
32:13Because, one, you've got both hands-free.
32:16And I don't know if you're like me, but when I've got a shoulder strap on like that,
32:20I'm always hitching it up, it's always falling down.
32:23And it's heavy.
32:25So, I tend to have my little bag with my lipstick,
32:30and a balm for my lips in case, because you're in a different climate,
32:35whether it's hot, cold, always keep a balm with you.
32:39Also, sunglasses.
32:42Now, I have bought a different case for my sunglasses,
32:46because usually sunglasses come in a big, chunky case,
32:51whereas this is fantastic.
32:53It's very, very pliable.
32:55Then, comb. You don't need a load of brushes.
32:58Just take a comb to put through your hair.
33:01That's all you need.
33:02And if you do take medication, there's these little pouches now that you can get.
33:11I have everything in here.
33:13I've got seasickness tablets.
33:16I've got paracetamols.
33:18I've got Gaviscon.
33:19But that is a little pouch that will fit in that bag.
33:25These are really, really heavy.
33:28Weigh a ton, which then is bad on your shoulder.
33:32So, you don't need all these cards.
33:35Just take one credit card with you.
33:39And a bit of cash in case your taxes don't take, cards or, you know,
33:44just the tips, things like that.
33:46Always keep a little bit of money with you.
33:48And that is basically that.
33:51Sunglasses.
33:53Lippy.
33:55Bit of perfume.
33:56A comb.
33:59And, of course, your civilisation.
34:02Your life.
34:06Coming up, I'm feeling on top of the world in Rio.
34:09Oh, my God.
34:10You actually feel like you're flying.
34:13And I savour my final flavours of Brazil.
34:16Oh, that's lovely.
34:18Sapping up with coconut and cheese.
34:19Yes.
34:20I've never had that before.
34:21Mm-hmm.
34:29Before I finish the South American chapter of my pole to pole story,
34:33I have time for one last very special, very quick pit stop in Rio de Janeiro.
34:40One, two, three.
34:41Carbon five.
34:42Five.
34:43Five.
34:44Two, eight, six.
34:46Six.
34:51But it's not Carnival Rio I've come to see.
34:54I didn't expect to be blown away by the rural parts of Brazil and Antarctica and Falklands and South Georgia.
35:05As a result, I've developed a hunger to see more of the planet's natural beauty.
35:10So it's Sugarloaf Mountain that's brought me here.
35:14This monolithic granite landmarks sat on the peninsula at the mouth of Guanabara Bay, 396 metres above the harbour.
35:23OK.
35:24Here you come back.
35:26And for an even better view of the mountain and all of Rio.
35:31Ooh.
35:32Here we go.
35:34I need to get up there.
35:36OK.
35:37My advice is if you don't like heights, don't do this.
35:50But you'd miss out on one of the most iconic views in the world.
35:54Across the city, the South Atlantic, and of course, Christ the Redeemer.
35:59Mind the gap between the cable car and the platform.
36:03It's a two-part ascent.
36:05And if part one is anything to go by, I'm in for a spectacular treat.
36:17I mean, it's well worth the queueing.
36:20Look at that.
36:25But my journey is only halfway.
36:27I've got another cable car to get and get even nearer to Christ.
36:33Oh, my God.
36:34You actually feel like you're flying.
36:35It's a bit of a thrill, this.
36:36I can't lie.
36:37This is thrilling.
36:38Even more so knowing it's apparently the third oldest cable car in the world.
36:54And I found a cheeky bar at the top to pause and take all this in.
37:12Look at this view.
37:13I mean, that is quite stunning.
37:19Heavenly, in fact.
37:24Hello.
37:25Hi.
37:26And Emma.
37:28You're welcome.
37:29Mmm.
37:30This looks good.
37:31Yeah, it's very nice.
37:32I'm trying one last authentic speciality before I leave.
37:37Tapioca for coconuts and some cheese.
37:39Oh, lovely.
37:40Tapioca for coconut and cheese.
37:42Yes.
37:43I've never had that before.
37:44Never.
37:45I've not had tapioca since school.
37:48Ooh.
37:50A crispy cube.
37:52Ooh, that's lovely.
37:53With a chewy, cheesy middle.
37:57Well, I would never have put those three things together.
38:00But, hey, when in Brazil, when in Rio.
38:03See you.
38:06And on the advice of my waiter, I'm washing it down with my last local tipple.
38:11Have you got one minute to just sit down and have a chat?
38:13Yes, of course.
38:14Yeah, just take a seat.
38:15Excuse me?
38:16Yeah.
38:17What's your name?
38:18My name is Marcelo.
38:19Marcelo.
38:20I'm Jane.
38:21Nice to meet you.
38:22Nice to meet you.
38:23And thank you for recommending this.
38:24Yes, yeah.
38:25You want to try something Brazilian, so I recommend some Ipanema.
38:28Fantastic.
38:29Ipanema?
38:30Ipanema.
38:31As in the girl from?
38:32I like the beach closer here.
38:35Ooh, wow.
38:37That is delicious.
38:38Ah.
38:39What's in this?
38:40Vodka, grape, and lime juice.
38:43Wow.
38:44Well, it's very, very good.
38:46And it nearly blew my head off.
38:50And what is it about Brazil that you love?
38:53Tell me.
38:54Sell it to me.
38:55The people.
38:56They care about each other.
38:57The parties.
38:58Everything from the people from Brazil is special for me.
39:01Mm-hmm.
39:02Because that's what I've noticed.
39:03In all of my trip in Brazil, how lovely the people are.
39:07And how genuinely happy they are to see us.
39:09Yes.
39:10You can see from the parties, from the carnival.
39:12We all mix together and celebrate.
39:14For nothing.
39:15Just celebrate.
39:16Yeah.
39:17You should be happy.
39:18Every day get happy.
39:19Celebrate life.
39:20Yes.
39:21Oh, I could live here.
39:22You've got the beaches.
39:23You've got the greenery.
39:24Yes.
39:25You've got the lovely air.
39:26Everything there is.
39:27Well, I don't know what to say, really.
39:28Look at you.
39:29Look at you.
39:30You are happy.
39:31Just before being here.
39:32Yeah, exactly.
39:33I've only just sat down and spoke to you and I'm already beaming.
39:40This is Brazil.
39:41Oh, fantastic.
39:42Well, thank you.
39:43Welcome.
39:44Cheers.
39:45Cheers for that.
39:46Toodles.
39:47Toodles.
39:48That's great.
39:49Mmm.
39:50I'm going to leave you alone and you can appreciate it.
39:53Enjoy.
39:54In the city.
39:55Lovely to meet you, love.
39:56I appreciate you.
39:58And welcome to Rio.
39:59See you later.
40:00See you later.
40:01Bye.
40:02What a lovely chap.
40:07I love Rio and there's no doubt it's the party capital of South America.
40:12But as I get older, I'm definitely gravitating towards something different.
40:17I always thought I was a city girl, but I think I'm changing.
40:22In fact, I know I am.
40:23I'm changing to a country girl, without a doubt.
40:27And this trip has proved it to me.
40:31My mother always said it's good to change.
40:34You should never think what you thought yesterday.
40:36She was a very wise woman, my mother.
40:39But I think that's it.
40:40It's the experiences, the memories that you make and the people you meet.
40:44And it's been incredible.
40:46And I feel very blessed to have been able to do it.
40:49I think anybody who gets a chance to go to Rio should snap your hand off.
40:54Moving on the floor now, babe.
41:03You're a bird of paradise.
41:05Cherry ice cream smile.
41:07I suppose it's very nice.
41:09With a step to your left and a flick to right.
41:12It's very nice
41:15With a step to your left and a picture right
41:18You catch the mirror way out west
41:21You know you're something special
41:25And you look like you're the best
