00:00I'm Jane MacDonald.
00:02Let's go exploring!
00:04I'm on an extraordinary, breathtakingly beautiful transglobal expedition.
00:09Oh wow, look!
00:11From pole to pole.
00:12It is quite brutal here, I'm not going to lie.
00:15This first stretch of this trip has been incredible.
00:21Whoa, look at this.
00:23I've been bashed by waves.
00:26What the hell are we doing out here?
00:28I've stood with a flag in the most southern place I'll ever be in my life.
00:35We have conquered Antarctica.
00:38The insignificance of our little lives.
00:41But it's not next day delivery here.
00:44Among this magic of our planet.
00:48You can actually feel it doing you good.
00:51And I feel like I'm on the most amazing journey now.
00:55That is such a different taste.
00:57And a very good morning to you.
01:00And I'm ready for the next part of my big adventure.
01:04My next port of call is Montevideo in Uruguay.
01:08And I'm sure it's going to be a bit of a culture shock actually.
01:12I think Uruguay is probably the most underrated place in the world.
01:17I've heard it's noisy, colourful and has an energy all of its own.
01:22So it definitely belongs on my bucket list.
01:24I told you, didn't I?
01:25Welcome to South America!
01:31I told you, didn't I?
01:32Welcome to South America!
01:33I told you, didn't I?
01:34Welcome to South America!
01:36For the third leg of my pole to pole voyage, I'm starting on the north shore of the Rio de la Plata Estuary.
01:54I'll travel along the Uruguayan coast, stopping in Punta del Este, and then onwards to Brazil.
02:04But first, I'm in Montevideo.
02:06I want to experience the Uruguay capital's famous mix of modern vitality and old world charm for myself.
02:13You know that one of the tours we have is really a walking tour around the old city.
02:20So I've taken the bull by the horns and collared local guide Adriana to show me around.
02:26So this to me seems like the perfect meeting spot if you've got a date.
02:30Absolutely, yes.
02:31Everybody knows this place here in Montevideo, right?
02:34Uh-huh.
02:35It is called the Independence Square, and it actually separates the old city of Montevideo from the modern one.
02:42Ah, right. And who is this?
02:44Well, this man is called José Artigas, and he's really our hero, right?
02:49Really?
02:50He was the man who started leading a revolution in order to free this territory from the Spanish crown.
02:57Oh, OK.
02:58The revolution started in 1811.
03:01The architecture with its colonial influences is striking, but I'm also struck by how green it is in the heart of the bustling city.
03:08You can see lots of palm trees around.
03:12Uh-huh.
03:13They are really a symbol, yes, because they represent the 33 men who, after Artigas, continued with this process of independence.
03:22Oh.
03:23So first we had to fight the Spanish people.
03:25Later on we had to fight the Portuguese people in order to become independent.
03:30I see.
03:31So you've had a couple of wars on you.
03:33Absolutely.
03:34Many.
03:35And many battles, right?
03:36Uh-huh.
03:37But in the end we became independent in 1825.
03:39Uh-huh.
03:40So our independence involved a long, long process.
03:43Can I imagine?
03:44Yeah.
03:45I know.
03:46People are still fighting today, aren't they?
03:47Absolutely.
03:48Listening to Adriana, I get a strong sense of the resilience and passion that shaped this city.
03:55So this wall here, the gate that we walked through, what is that?
03:59Well, that is called the Citadel Door.
04:03When Montevideo was founded there used to be a wall surrounding the whole city of Montevideo.
04:09Really?
04:10That was used for protection, yes?
04:12We had Aborigines in this area.
04:14They were called the Charrua Indians.
04:16And we also had the Portuguese invaders.
04:19Right.
04:20So that wall protected the whole city.
04:23Unfortunately, when we became independent, the wall was demolished.
04:27But yes, but what still remains is the door.
04:30Is the door.
04:31Just to keep you reminded that, you know, if you don't behave yourself, the wall is going back up.
04:36That's okay.
04:37That's okay.
04:38All right.
04:39Montevideo was irresistible to invaders because of its strategic port position.
04:45This building is a landmark to us, right?
04:48It is called Salvo Palace, built by the year 1928.
04:54It belonged to the Salvo brothers who were very wealthy people.
04:59And the original project was to have a hotel in the area.
05:03It was made by an Italian man called Mario Palanti.
05:07I mean, if I was here, I'd want to live in there.
05:10I really would.
05:11Yes, you have a perfect view from Rio de la Plata, right?
05:15Okay.
05:16And then every day I could look out at the 33 palm trees.
05:18Exactly, yes.
05:19And celebrate this chap here.
05:21Hats off to you, General Jose.
05:24As a performer, there's another building that's caught my eye.
05:30So this is the theatre.
05:31This was built in 1856, right?
05:34It has a neoclassic style.
05:36Really, construction began before, in 1842.
05:40It's named after Solis?
05:43Solis, yes.
05:44Solis was really the discoverer of Rio de la Plata.
05:47Oh, really?
05:48Yes, yes.
05:49He was here in 1516, right?
05:51All right, okay.
05:52And because of that, this theatre took his name.
05:55It's the most important opera house we have in Montevideo and in Uruguay.
05:59Artists from opera singer Enrique Caruso
06:02to actress Vivian Lee have performed here.
06:05And I wonder if I'll get a shot someday.
06:07Now to the really important questions.
06:10So the biggest thing in theatres in the UK, as someone who works in theatres,
06:14is parking.
06:15Have you got good parking here for the theatre?
06:17No, not really.
06:18Yes, we have a small parking place around, right?
06:21But then people park wherever they have a place, right?
06:24Ah.
06:25So the ones who arrive first are the ones who have the best place.
06:28Oh, okay.
06:29Getting the bar.
06:30Yeah.
06:31Yeah.
06:32That's the secret really, isn't it?
06:33It's a problem.
06:34Yeah.
06:35Or hop on a bus or grab a taxi.
06:38But we walked up an appetite and Adriana says the place for the authentic taste of Uruguay
06:44is in the port market.
06:46Whoa.
06:47Something smells good.
06:48Yeah.
06:49Yeah.
06:50Hello.
06:52Thank you very much.
06:53It opened over a hundred years ago to supply fruit, veg and meats to ships arriving in
06:59port.
07:00But it's evolved into a gastronomic delight and lively meeting place.
07:06I'm loving the smell of this.
07:07It's barbecue here, isn't it?
07:08Mmm.
07:09And it smells like wood.
07:10Yes.
07:11It's barbecue.
07:12It's barbecue.
07:13Would you like to have barbecue?
07:14Yeah, I think so.
07:15That's okay.
07:16I want your best.
07:17Okay.
07:18Whatever your specialities are.
07:21Um, the baby beef.
07:22The barbecue?
07:23Yeah.
07:24Yeah?
07:25Yeah?
07:26The baby beef.
07:27Yeah.
07:28The big portion.
07:31Still water.
07:32Still water.
07:33That's okay.
07:34Thank you very much.
07:35Beef barbecue, or asado, is a cornerstone of authentic Uruguayan cuisine.
07:40It originates from the time of the gaucho, the nomadic cowboys who cooked over open wood-burning
07:46fires.
07:47Tell me about how many different cultures are here because you've been invaded so many times.
07:54Yes.
07:55Well, we have contributions from many people, right?
07:58The Italian people contributed with their food, with the wine, so we have also pasta,
08:05right?
08:06The Spanish people obviously left the language as the most important contribution from the
08:13English people.
08:14We got this place, for example.
08:16Oh, a good architecture.
08:17Yes, absolutely, absolutely.
08:19If you look round, the framework was really actually brought from Liverpool.
08:24Liverpool?
08:25Liverpool.
08:26We got everywhere.
08:27Yes, yes.
08:31Wow, the food is ready.
08:33Fabulous.
08:34All right.
08:35Wow.
08:36Oh, my.
08:37Woo!
08:38Wow.
08:39This is a lot of meat.
08:41Yes.
08:42It's for a whole family, isn't it?
08:44They do like the meat.
08:46I can't lie.
08:47Let me see.
08:50But I like my meat as well.
08:52And by heck, they can do a steak.
08:54Wow.
08:56And they don't overdo it.
08:58A good piece of meat doesn't need smothering in a load of stuff.
09:03It was cooked beautifully for me.
09:05OK.
09:06Shall we cheers again?
09:08Yeah.
09:09Thank you so much.
09:10Cheers.
09:11Good.
09:12Is this more or less what you were expecting?
09:14Perfect.
09:15Yes.
09:16Gorgeous.
09:19Coming up.
09:20I'm just going to savour this moment.
09:22I drink in the stunning views at a hilltop vineyard.
09:25It is heaven.
09:26It is definitely heaven.
09:27And I'm lost for words.
09:29Is there anybody out there who can translate for me?
09:32As I step out solo in Brazil.
09:34It's day two of the South American leg of my pole to pole adventure.
09:49I've sailed almost 100 nautical miles to Punto de Esa in Uruguay.
09:56And on board my discovery yacht, Scenic Eclipse, I'm getting ready for another day in paradise.
10:02I thought I'd landed in heaven.
10:05When we first docked, it was like being in Saint Tropez.
10:11There were yachts and beautiful shops and coffee places all along the beach.
10:17It was breathtakingly beautiful.
10:22And to be honest, you didn't want to leave that little bit.
10:27But thankfully, I did.
10:29I went up to a vineyard.
10:31Tucked away in the hills above Punto del Este is Maldonado,
10:36a region where Uruguay's wine production is flourishing.
10:40So, in the interest of research...
10:45Hi, Jane.
10:47Hello.
10:48Welcome to Minha, then.
10:49Oh, wow.
10:50Lovely to see you.
10:51We're so happy to receive you here.
10:53It's a gorgeous place.
10:54It is.
10:55It is.
10:56It is so lovely.
10:57You will feel in heaven here.
11:00Oh, I'm sure we will.
11:02Lucia is the director of Wiener Eden, a family-owned boutique winery.
11:07Now, you know I like a drop,
11:09so I'm keen to see if Uruguay's wines are up to my exacting standards.
11:15So, let's try and cheers for the vineyards.
11:18Absolutely.
11:19I'm just going to savour this moment.
11:21Why not start with sparkling wine?
11:26Oh, that's good.
11:27It is good.
11:28Well, this is special because we are here in a restaurant that is called Maldonado.
11:33Maldonado is where we are.
11:35We are close to the ocean.
11:37Mm-hm.
11:38So, it's very good.
11:39It's not so hot for the grape.
11:42It's, like, perfect to make this elegant.
11:45I like that.
11:46That's a very good word for this, because it is extremely elegant.
11:50The distinct flavours, the result of good drainage, the Atlantic climate and mineral-rich soils.
11:59This is quite a young vineyard, isn't it?
12:01Yes.
12:02We here came in 2009.
12:05This area is called Pueblo Eden.
12:07That is the heaven town.
12:10And we are Viñeden.
12:11The vineyard in heaven.
12:12Oh, my God!
12:13That worked out well.
12:14And this hill is called Cerro Negro.
12:17Mm-hm.
12:18That means dark hill.
12:20It's because when it's dark in the night, you don't have moon.
12:25Mm-hm.
12:26Everything is dark.
12:27Everything.
12:28You don't see anything but the stars.
12:29Wow.
12:30So, it is heaven.
12:31It is definitely heaven.
12:33The region's affectionately known as the Tuscany of Uruguay, with a similar landscape of rolling hills.
12:44Oh, this looks lovely.
12:46Am I here?
12:47Yes, please.
12:52We're starting with the sparkling wine.
12:55For regular sparkling wines, you ice the top of the bottle and you take the lees and then you put the cork and take it.
13:03Lees is a sediment usually removed. Left in, it can produce a fuller, creamier texture.
13:10It looks a bit like raspberry lemonade.
13:12With this wine, we leave all there. You have the lees here.
13:16Right.
13:17So, we call it 3D because it's like a three dimension in your mouth.
13:20Right. Cheers.
13:22Cheers.
13:23Cheers.
13:24Cheers.
13:31Ooh.
13:32That's really different.
13:33Yes.
13:34To open this bottle, you have to be very careful.
13:36Yes.
13:37Yes.
13:38You can have your eye out, that.
13:40So, tell me about Uruguay.
13:42Everybody seems to know about Brazil and Argentina and my napkin blowing off.
13:47But Uruguay, not many people know about it, really.
13:51You know, we are number one in some index like democracy in Latin America and transparency also.
13:59The last in corruption, like not the number one, the last one.
14:04Mm-hmm.
14:05And recently the United Nations released an index of happiness.
14:09Mm-hmm.
14:10And Uruguay was chosen like the happiest country in Latin America and you can see why.
14:14Absolutely, I can.
14:15And these emerging wines are something to smile about too.
14:19So different.
14:21Uruguay's proving they're a rising star alongside neighbours like Argentina.
14:27Speaking of which, what's the red like?
14:30With the red wines, you will feel that it's a more fruity wine.
14:36Okay.
14:37And if you know the grape Marcelin, it was created in a laboratory actually.
14:41Mm-hmm.
14:42And it's mostly used, it's a blend between Grenache and Cabernet Franc.
14:47It's a bold grape, it's a strong grape.
14:49You need to eat it with something, to drink it with something.
14:53It's always good to know that this wine will go with a bag of crisps and a box set.
14:59Cheers.
15:00Cheers.
15:01Cheers.
15:02But I'll gladly test a few more to be sure which goes best.
15:05Smooth, quite light.
15:08It's a good wine for people that don't like so much wine.
15:11Yeah, yeah.
15:12Yeah.
15:13Awesome.
15:14No, it's not good that because I would drink twice as much.
15:16On average, it takes between 15 to 24 months to produce a bottle of wine,
15:23from first harvest to that delicious first glass.
15:27And now here you have our Chardonnay.
15:29Ooh, right.
15:30It's a very mineral Chardonnay.
15:32Mm-hmm.
15:33This is the identity of Viñeden.
15:35You will feel the salt, you will feel the soil in the glass when you try it.
15:42Maybe you know some Chardonnays and you have your idea of Chardonnay.
15:46Mm-hmm.
15:47This is totally different.
15:51Ooh, that does not taste like a Chardonnay.
15:53No.
15:54It's dead.
15:55I find them quite heavy, a Chardonnay.
15:58This is a fresh...
15:59It really is.
16:01Argentinian wine is very, very famous.
16:04Uruguayan?
16:05Mm-hmm.
16:06Not so famous, but it will be.
16:09I must start appreciating how much work goes into making a very good wine.
16:17Yes.
16:18Because of the minerals in that soil and then the sea and the salt,
16:23all of that in those grapes that they're made into this amazing wine.
16:29You don't need a huge amount.
16:31No.
16:32Just a taste of something exceptionally good, with something exceptionally good,
16:38was delicious.
16:40So watch out for the Uruguayans coming in.
16:44It's a tough job.
16:46But somebody's got to do it.
16:50Anyway, I'm happy.
16:51I'm happy.
16:52I'm happy.
16:53I'm glad.
16:54You're welcome.
16:55You're welcome.
16:56I think I might need a cheeky siesta back on board.
17:00Well, I'm very honoured to have been here today to try these amazing wines.
17:06Well, it was an honor for me to have it here.
17:08Oh.
17:09And...
17:10Salud.
17:11Salud.
17:12Cheers.
17:13I think anybody who discovered Uruguay on the way to Antarctica
17:19would probably have not left.
17:21Because I certainly would have done.
17:23Because it is so beautiful.
17:26And plentiful.
17:28And welcoming.
17:29That's one of my favourite places now.
17:31Uruguay.
17:32Definitely in my top three places to visit.
17:38Back on board and we're heading for Brazil.
17:41There's an open door policy on the bridge.
17:43So I'm off to meet Captain Ned.
17:45I'm going in.
17:46I'm keen to find out what inspired him to take up this post.
17:51Hi, Captain.
17:52Oh, hello, Jane.
17:53How are you?
17:54I'm really well.
17:55How are you?
17:56Very well.
17:57Nice to see you.
17:58Hello.
17:59I've come up for a chat today.
18:00Oh, you're welcome.
18:01Because I want to sort of know the brain of a captain.
18:03You are living the dream, aren't you?
18:05I am living the dream, yes.
18:07I've got a great job and I get to explore these wonderful places.
18:11And what was the inspiration for you to do this?
18:13Have you always fancied being a traveller?
18:15Yes.
18:16I grew up on the Isle of Wight.
18:17Oh.
18:18So I was always near the sea and always looking at ships.
18:20And I think my earliest dream when I was about three years old, you know, when you were
18:24a little kid, I wanted to be captain of the Isle of Wight ferry.
18:26Oh, right.
18:27Which I did.
18:28Yeah.
18:29Eventually do.
18:30And I used to read the sort of the old naval fictions, the Hornblowers, the Patrick O' Bryans,
18:35of them sailing in old sailing ships around the world.
18:38And probably would be my absolute dream was to have a small sailing ship and just sail around
18:42the world.
18:43But this is about as close as I can get to it and earn money and have a life of luxury
18:48at the same time.
18:49Yeah.
18:50Do you know, I've spoke to so many captains who have said exactly that.
18:53They just want the small sailing boat to go off around the world and do what they want.
18:58So you're in good company.
18:59I'm in good company.
19:00Yes.
19:01Is there anywhere that you fancy still going that you haven't been?
19:03Where do I fancy going?
19:05There's a lot of the South Sea islands that I'd like to go.
19:08I haven't been to the Cook Islands.
19:10I haven't been to Tuvalu.
19:13I still want to do a lot more exploring in New Zealand and South America.
19:18I haven't really been to other than the coastline.
19:20So yeah, plenty more world still to visit.
19:23Can you get together with the owners and just say, I fancy doing this or no?
19:27No.
19:28Does that not work?
19:29I try.
19:30I haven't done here yet.
19:31I try.
19:32I do try.
19:33I have tried.
19:34Well, thank you so much for letting me come up on the bridge.
19:36Oh, you're very welcome.
19:37It's been nice to have you here.
19:38Lovely to see you.
19:39I'll get out of Captain Ned's way to let him steer us safely to my next port of call in Brazil.
19:48You know, we all have perceptions of where we're going.
19:51It's sexy, Brazil.
19:53That's how I see Brazil.
19:56Women in fabulous bikinis, very party people, great beaches.
20:03I've had Brazilian knickers before.
20:06I'm in Brazil.
20:07I'm actually in Brazil.
20:11São Francisco do Sul, in fact.
20:14I've sailed 678 nautical miles from Punta del Este in Uruguay to the southern coast of
20:21Brazil, which sits on the South Atlantic Ocean.
20:24For centuries, this historic port was a vital and bustling gateway for trade.
20:29But today, I want to explore it all on my own.
20:32Wish me luck.
20:33Hi.
20:34Welcome to the city.
20:36So, take the mag, please.
20:38I wanted to be an explorer on my own.
20:41And I think sometimes, although you get lots of trips and tours offered,
20:46sometimes you just want to nip off on your own and have a little look round.
20:50You can go to the church in here.
20:52So, I go right.
20:53Yep.
20:54And there's always people there to explain the best places to go.
20:59And you can go to the supermarket.
21:02Municipal is perfect.
21:03Mm-hmm.
21:04And the Julia Cos house in here.
21:05Okay.
21:06And whatever you want out of that day, someone at the port will tell you where to go or what
21:13to do.
21:14Fantastic.
21:15Sure.
21:16What a lovely welcome.
21:17Thank you very much.
21:18I'm going on my travels.
21:19Okay.
21:20See you later.
21:21Bye.
21:22See you later.
21:23Bye.
21:24I've just come and got a map.
21:27She's told me really the places where I want to go.
21:31And if there's an odd shop on the way, well, that's fine.
21:35coming up.
21:36Well done, Jane.
21:38Oh!
21:39I find a new string to me bow in Brazil.
21:42This could be my next career.
21:44And even step through time.
21:46Way!
21:47What is the 1600?
21:48Yeah!
21:49We all have an image of Brazil.
21:50Everybody just thinks of Rio and carnivals and beaches.
22:06Where we're going, there's going to be different parts of Brazil that are not really inhabited,
22:15like the main parts of Brazil.
22:18I'm starting quietly in the historic city of São Francisco do Sul.
22:23I'm going to get my map out and just have a look to where I am because it always helps you to...
22:28Oh!
22:29Apart from the fact that it's all in Portuguese.
22:31But still, a map is a map is a map.
22:34So, I'm on Rua Babi Tonga.
22:39So, I could do with going down there a bit more.
22:45Just down to Main Street, really.
22:47Just down the high street.
22:48Take a left.
22:49And it's all there!
22:51Let's go exploring!
22:56As a solo traveller, I love the thrill of exploring new places on me own.
23:01I'm discovering a treasure trove of traditional arts and crafts.
23:05Oh, it's Bindi.
23:08Each shop telling a story of the town's rich heritage and skills passed down through generations.
23:14It's a lovely, quaint little place, this, isn't it?
23:18It's a city now.
23:20And the great thing about having the map is that there's a history on the back of where it's all about.
23:27And I like it when it's that size.
23:31Because I don't really have to do an exam on it.
23:36I just want to know where I am and how it got here.
23:39And how we got here.
23:41And it's absolutely lovely.
23:44So far, I've learned it was colonised by the Portuguese in 1641,
23:48who established a settlement here, which you can see in the architecture.
23:53When you're doing it yourself, you can take it at your own pace.
23:58And I like to do that.
24:03Now, I've been told to come and see this house because it's quite historical.
24:07And I've found out it's a shoe shop.
24:10Now, that is what I call a result.
24:15I'm all for learning about the history of a place.
24:18But shopping, and especially shoe shopping, that seems too good to miss.
24:24Full disclosure, I resisted the urge to splurge.
24:27So, onwards.
24:41Oh, can I come in?
24:43Can I come in?
24:45See.
24:48Weaving has been passed down through the generations here.
24:51And it's thrilling to see those skills are being kept alive.
24:55I love coming into a local shop and just seeing what they do.
25:04Because every high street now is the same.
25:07No matter what big city, anywhere in the world, it's all the same.
25:11But when you get a little shop like this,
25:13which is with local people who actually are doing the work in the shop,
25:18I just think it's really special to buy something from here.
25:23It's a skill that's preserved and celebrated,
25:26connecting the past to the present
25:28in the most colourful and creative of ways.
25:30And I'm dying to learn more.
25:32I was in a shop where I desperately wanted to speak to someone,
25:49but I couldn't speak Portuguese.
25:51The lady couldn't speak English, but we were communicating in a way
26:01that I really wanted to go for a drink with her
26:04because she looked like such good fun.
26:06Is there anybody out there who can translate for me?
26:09I'm sure we'd get on really well.
26:11But I went out into the street and I just said,
26:16can anyone speak English here?
26:19And this lady said, yes.
26:21One, I really like this lady, and I think we'd get on really well.
26:31She's trying to get the base of it complete.
26:35And then after that, she will start sparkling colours around
26:38like she's doing now.
26:40Right.
26:41OK.
26:42She says two states.
26:43I was so lucky to meet someone to help translate.
26:47Sometimes, it's those chance moments
26:49that make travel truly special.
26:51She believes you should try.
26:53What?
26:54Yeah, you.
26:55Me?
26:56Come on, sit down.
26:57You see?
26:58I'll give you my mouth.
26:59Yeah.
27:00And, yeah, the one you're going to press.
27:02You're going to push.
27:03Yeah, like a pedal.
27:05You don't have to push more.
27:06Yeah, yeah.
27:07Hold this.
27:08Hold this.
27:09Hold it.
27:10Yeah.
27:11OK.
27:12Move.
27:13And then that way.
27:14Now?
27:15Yeah.
27:16From this side to the other side.
27:17OK.
27:18Jane, do you see your right foot?
27:20Yeah.
27:21Do not go too deep, OK?
27:22OK.
27:23I'm with you.
27:24Got it.
27:25Got it.
27:26Oh!
27:27Well done, Jane!
27:30This could be my next career.
27:33This is hard.
27:34Yeah, deixa.
27:35Listen, this is hard.
27:37Look!
27:38This is quite something.
27:40And then you've got to move your feet and your arms.
27:41You see, when you move?
27:42You can tell that's definitely me.
27:44LAUGHTER
27:47Are you happy?
27:48I am very happy.
27:49I've learnt a new skill today.
27:51OK.
27:52Put your orders in now, folks.
27:54Although, perhaps, I should leave it to the experts.
27:57Thank you so much.
28:00You're amazing.
28:02I've had a great time in there.
28:05I'm glad you did that.
28:06I really have.
28:07What a lovely shot.
28:08Listen, I'm ever so sorry for hijacking you in the street like that.
28:12No worries.
28:13It was a pleasure.
28:14It's nice to meet you.
28:15I'm nice to meet you.
28:16What's your name?
28:17My name is Alini.
28:18Alini.
28:19I'm Jane.
28:20So, really lovely to meet you.
28:21You're touring around my city.
28:22I am, yes.
28:23Welcome.
28:25Are you going up or down?
28:26Yeah.
28:27I was just going to go up to the church.
28:28Oh.
28:29Can I join?
28:30Yes.
28:31Please do.
28:32So we can have a chat.
28:33Please.
28:34Come on.
28:35Oh, at least you have someone to talk.
28:36Oi.
28:37I'm me.
28:38Come on.
28:39I'm struck by how friendly the people are here.
28:41Take Alini.
28:42Quick to give up a time and share stories and traditions to help me discover its secret history.
28:49This church was built by a few sailors.
28:52Right.
28:53When they arrived here, they were coming from a trip.
28:57They almost died on sea.
28:58Really?
28:59And they promised that as soon as they could get their feet on the ground, they will build
29:05a church.
29:06To thank God, it was originally made of shells.
29:11Shells?
29:12Shells.
29:13They crushed that, mixed with sand from the beach.
29:17Uh-huh.
29:18And then put it all together as a glue.
29:19Glue it all together using whale oil.
29:22Then they colour everything using yorks.
29:25Yolks.
29:26Yolks.
29:27Yolks.
29:28Eggs.
29:29Eggs.
29:30Eggs.
29:31Yolks.
29:32That's why it's yellow.
29:33Egg yolks?
29:34I'm not sure if the yolk's on me.
29:35So this is...
29:36What?
29:37Why have we stopped here?
29:38Every time I come here to the city, I like to cross from here up to there.
29:42Because it's original path walk.
29:44From the 1600s.
29:45This is the original?
29:46That's the original.
29:47From the 1600s?
29:49Stones from there.
29:50You give me your hand.
29:51Right.
29:52And take a breath.
29:53Jump into paths.
29:54One, go!
29:55Hey!
29:56That is the 1600s!
29:57Yeah!
29:58But you look so cool.
29:59Oh my God, I'm in Outland.
30:00The 1600s.
30:01Oh, that's amazing.
30:02Thank goodness I met you.
30:04Oh!
30:05Thank God I found you.
30:07I know.
30:08Because my afternoon was being very boring.
30:10Aline was just a joy to be around.
30:18What a chance meeting that was.
30:20Oh my God, look at this.
30:23That's the Bobby Tonga Bay.
30:25Oh!
30:26Things happen in life, you know.
30:28There's no such thing as coincidence, I don't think.
30:31That is just beautiful.
30:34Glad you like.
30:36Oh!
30:37You have to go with the flow sometimes.
30:39And Aline was just like a gift.
30:41See why it's one of my favourite spots?
30:43This is the favourite spot.
30:45I can see that.
30:46See?
30:47She was a wonderful person.
30:49And she gave her time up for me.
30:51And I thought that was really special.
30:53Thank you for bringing me to your special place.
30:56Oh, yeah.
30:57It's good to share with you.
30:58It's a pleasure.
30:59Pleasure.
31:00It's gorgeous.
31:12I have had the most amazing day.
31:15And sometimes it's great not to plan anything.
31:18to just get off the ship and let life take its own course.
31:23You just need to relax. That reminds me.
31:27Now, when you've got a long journey, and we have quite a lot of long journeys,
31:32and I'm always looking, I'm always looking for the next best thing.
31:36Sleep is really difficult on a plane.
31:40This is a new fangled pillow that's come out,
31:44which you clip on the back, and then it's sort of...
31:49Actually, get your earphones out first.
31:52Don't put the big ones on like this, because you can't get this on.
31:57So put these in, like so,
32:02and then put this around your neck.
32:09Ooh, that's quite comfy.
32:11And actually, with these earphones as well,
32:13they tend to pop out a bit, don't they?
32:15These actually hold them in.
32:19If you're thinking of copping off on plane,
32:21you're not going to cop off with this around your neck,
32:24because it builds all your cheeks in.
32:26But who cares?
32:27As long as you're going to get some sleep, it doesn't matter, does it?
32:30And then you put your eye mask on.
32:31Put some music on first.
32:34Bit of Kenny Rogers.
32:36Put your eye mask on.
32:38That's me.
32:42Now, from Manchester Airport.
32:47Wet me up for breakfast.
32:49Thank you very much.
32:54Ah, Daddy.
32:55Where is everybody?
33:01Hello?
33:03Coming up...
33:04It's just so gorgeous.
33:07..I venture out on a magical mystery tour.
33:10It looks like pirates could come here.
33:13..and create unforgettable memories in a wildlife paradise.
33:17They are here.
33:18Look at those!
33:18I'm on the third leg of my pole-to-pole journey,
33:30exploring Brazil's beautiful south-eastern coast.
33:33I'm continuing north,
33:35sailing for 70 nautical miles
33:37to an untouched paradise
33:39few have experienced
33:40for a special rendezvous.
33:42Hi, I'm Jane.
33:46I'm Marcio.
33:46Marcio.
33:47Nice to meet you.
33:48Lovely name, Marcio.
33:50Welcome to Honey Island.
33:51It's gorgeous here, isn't it?
33:53I've bagged a private boat trip
33:55from Pontal Dulce,
33:57a coastal town
33:58and a jumping-off point
33:59to see some of the region's treasures.
34:01We are in the biggest preserved area
34:05of rainforests of Brazil,
34:08second one.
34:09So we have many islands around the island,
34:12the Honey Island.
34:13Uh-huh.
34:14You're going to see beautiful images.
34:16Oh, fantastic.
34:18That's what I'm here for, Marcio.
34:20Honey Island is a hidden gem,
34:22but travellers are starting to discover its wild beauty,
34:25dramatic cliffs and unspoilt coastline.
34:29I bet that's an Irish pub.
34:32Is that an Irish pub over there?
34:34Ha-ha!
34:35Joking aside,
34:36I can't help but marvel
34:38at some of the most breathtaking views
34:40I've seen so far.
34:41Do you know why it's called Honey Island?
34:46No.
34:46No.
34:47A long time ago,
34:48we had a captain called Captain Miel.
34:52Right.
34:52Which, Miel, means honey.
34:55Ah, right.
34:57Because in Portuguese we call
34:59Ilha do Miel.
35:01For honey.
35:02So, yeah, Honey Island.
35:03Okay.
35:04And the other one
35:05is because the rivers here,
35:08they have a colour of mel.
35:10Oh!
35:10The colour of honey.
35:12Captain Honey
35:13and honey-coloured rivers.
35:16Yeah.
35:16I feel like I'm in the beginning of Jurassic Park.
35:26You know,
35:26when that steamer comes around the corner.
35:30It's just like the opening of that sequence.
35:35Fabulous.
35:36It's absolutely beautiful.
35:50It's just so gorgeous.
35:53It looks like a pirate's...
35:55Pirates could come here.
35:57You know?
35:57Yeah.
35:57We're gonna visit the cave where the mermaids...
36:04Oh, mermaids!
36:05...use to enchant the...
36:08The men.
36:09The men, yeah.
36:11So many ships broke there.
36:15I see.
36:16Are they real, these mermaids?
36:18No.
36:18Oh, you...
36:21In our minds, yeah.
36:23In our minds.
36:23Yeah, yeah.
36:24We can make it real.
36:25The legend of the mermaids of Pontal do Sul
36:32continues to captivate locals,
36:34visitors and me alike.
36:37Maybe it reminds us of the sea's enchanting power and beauty.
36:41The colonisers came from São Paulo
36:43looking for the gold.
36:45Oh, right.
36:46Is there any gold?
36:48A little bit.
36:48A little bit?
36:49Not too much.
36:49Just like the mermaids?
36:50Yeah.
36:51You're telling lies, aren't you?
36:52Yeah.
36:52You're just telling lies to get people here.
36:55So, we have a history about giants...
37:01Really?
37:02...coming over the mountains here.
37:04Yeah.
37:05So, you've got mermaids...
37:06Mermaids, giant...
37:07Gold...
37:08Gold.
37:09And giants.
37:10Yeah.
37:10And miel.
37:11And honey.
37:12And honey.
37:13It's the perfect place.
37:15And honey, yeah.
37:18This is the smaller cave.
37:21Yeah.
37:21And there, we're going to pass by the biggest one.
37:24Okay.
37:25Oh, look at this.
37:29In the morning, we can walk until this second.
37:32Really?
37:32Yeah.
37:33Because the sea is very...
37:35Tide.
37:36Tide, yeah.
37:37Right.
37:37The tide is out on the morning.
37:38Uh-huh.
37:39Gosh, it's beautiful.
37:41Mother nature.
37:44At its finest.
37:44Can you see the dolphins?
37:50Oh, wow, look.
37:51Yeah.
37:52Yeah.
37:55Look, look, look.
37:57Oh, my God.
37:59Come back.
38:00Oh, look, look.
38:03Oh, wow.
38:04This is definitely, definitely Dolphin Bay.
38:17There's something quite magical about dolphins.
38:20And it's like they're playful.
38:22There they go.
38:24And the elation that you feel when they come out of the water
38:28and they just do that, and it's like, oh, my God.
38:31And they were, like, families, just lovely families,
38:34all these families of dolphins around the boat.
38:37A family of dolphins.
38:39Yes.
38:40Oh, wow.
38:42You felt honoured that they'd come to say hello.
38:46Oh, they're so beautiful and graceful and really good strimmers.
38:57They are here.
38:59Look at those.
39:01Oh, fantastic.
39:04They're like buses.
39:09You don't see one for ages and then 15 come at once.
39:16It's opened my eyes.
39:17It really has opened my eyes how protective everybody is
39:21of their islands here.
39:22I'm just in awe, really.
39:27It's awesome.
39:28It's all the words not described.
39:31You know, it's so gorgeous.
39:33I've learned a lot on this trip already about the planet and how easy it is to just chop
39:41things down, get rid of things, when there are other ways.
39:46There are other ways to do things.
39:48I'd like to say thank you for such a wonderful trip today.
39:53Yeah.
39:54It's been amazing.
39:55They are like the gatekeepers.
39:58You are very welcome to come in and see how beautiful this is, but we need you to leave.
40:02And I think that's perfect.
40:04I'm so glad to make part of this program and to know you, Jay.
40:09Oh, right back at you.
40:10Right back at you.
40:11I've had a lovely time getting to know you.
40:14Yeah.
40:15It's always nice to show people our place.
40:19Of course.
40:20Yeah.
40:21It's so preserved and that it's continuous.
40:24I know.
40:25Preserved.
40:26I think a lot of us, when you get to my age, and slightly older, obviously, we look at
40:36a window that we've got to explore as much life and do as many things as we possibly can,
40:46because we're still young.
40:48I want to do as much as I possibly, possibly can while I can do it.
40:54And I'm sure there's a few people watching this that's resonating with.
40:59And that thirst for adventures keeping me young at heart, which is something worth singing
41:05about.
41:06Ah-pa-ta-pa-ta.
41:08Ah-pa-ta-pa-ta.
41:09Ah-pa-ta-pa-ta.
41:10Ah-pa-ta-pa-ta.
41:11Ah, ah-ha, ah-ha.
41:13Kissy face, kissy face.
41:14Enter your phone back.
41:16I'm trying to kiss your lips for real.
41:18Ah-ha, ah-ha.
41:19Red hearts, red hearts, that's what I'm on, yeah.
41:22Come give me something I can feel.
41:24Oh, oh, oh.
41:25Don't you want me like I want you, baby?
41:28Don't you need me like I need you now?
41:31Sleep tomorrow but tonight go crazy.
41:35All you gotta do is just meet me at the
41:38Ah-pa-ta-pa-ta. Ah-pa-ta-pa-ta. Ah-pa-ta-pa-ta. Ah-ha, ah-ha.
41:44Ah-pa-ta-pa-ta. Ah-pa-ta-pa-ta. Ah-pa-ta-pa-ta. Ah-pa-ta-pa-ta. Ah-ha, ah-ha.
41:50Ah-ha, ah-ha, ah-ha.
41:51It's whatever, it's whatever, it's whatever you like.
41:54Woo!
41:55Turn this Ah-pa-ta-pa-ta into a club. Ah-ha, ah-ha, ah-ha.
41:57I'm talking drink, dance, smoke-free, party all night.
42:00Come on.
42:01Gumby, Gumby, girl, what's up?
42:03Oh-oh, oh-oh, oh.
42:04Don't you want me like I want you, baby?
42:07Don't you need me like I need you now?
42:10Sleep tomorrow but tonight go crazy.
42:13All you gotta do is just meet me at the...
