00:00How does the Bridgerton set feel compared to other projects you've worked on?
00:03I haven't worked on that many other projects.
00:08Hi, Town & Country.
00:09I'm Luke Thompson.
00:10And I'm Yeren Ha.
00:11And today we are pulling back the curtain on the enchanting world of Bridgerton.
00:16Okay, you ready?
00:18Yeah.
00:19What was it like to join a franchise that's as celebrated as Bridgerton?
00:23A lot of pressure.
00:24I mean, millions of people have watched the show.
00:27When you first watched season one, did you think, like, maybe I'll be in that?
00:31Hell no.
00:31No?
00:32Absolutely not.
00:33I didn't think so.
00:34Yeah, I just didn't see myself in a period drama.
00:38Or, like, having an East Asian lead for one of the series.
00:42But, yeah, it's nice to be part of the family now.
00:45It's nice to sort of welcome you in.
00:48What do you remember about your audition?
00:50You do, like, loads of auditions as an actor.
00:53And 99% you just hear nothing.
00:54So you do get used to just being like, okay, I'll just send this in and forget about it.
00:59And Bridgerton was, you know, one of those, I guess.
01:02But it's funny, isn't it, when you get a part.
01:03You just sort of think you just happen to be the person they're looking for.
01:06Rather than, like, oh, I did really well.
01:07I didn't think, like, oh, my God, I've done the most amazing audition ever there.
01:11I'm fantastic.
01:12Yeah, I just sort of, I was like, oh, right, okay.
01:15I'm the right person for the job.
01:17Yeah.
01:17Yeah, that's how I felt, too.
01:18I was in Korea, in Gangnam, having breakfast with mum.
01:22And my agents gave me a really vague message before calling me.
01:28And I was like, this is strange.
01:29And then they were like, hold, please, we're going to grab all the team.
01:31Usually when everyone's on the call, it's positive news.
01:35Could you imagine if they all came on the call and they were like,
01:36you didn't get it.
01:38We're so sorry.
01:39We love you.
01:41Bless you.
01:41Everyone's going to say how sorry they are.
01:43Yeah.
01:43Awful.
01:44So I did kind of gauge that it was positive.
01:46But until they said the words out their mouth, I was like, oh, my God.
01:50And then as I was screaming and jumping for joy,
01:54mum kind of immediately gauged that I got the part.
01:57And she came out crying.
01:58God, sweet.
02:00Sweet.
02:01And it was so nice to share that with my mum.
02:02Take us back to your first day on set.
02:05What do you remember about that day?
02:07What was the first day on set?
02:08The kite.
02:08The kite scene.
02:09Together it was our kite scene.
02:10Yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:11You remember that.
02:11It was blue skies.
02:13Yeah, it was a gorgeous day.
02:14It was a gorgeous day.
02:15It's so funny because as a scene, the kite flying scene,
02:19is actually quite a sort of specific moment for Sophie, isn't it?
02:23Like you really get to see something really...
02:25Open up.
02:25Open up.
02:26So actually it's funny because it's quite a small island in the character in a way.
02:30Yeah.
02:30But that's actually what we got to experience first.
02:32And it was like a nice mirror moment for me as well as an actor being like,
02:36Oh, I can actually have fun now.
02:37Yeah.
02:38How did it feel to have the story centered around your character?
02:42It's really nice to be able to spend three seasons giving a very particular version of the character.
02:48I'd hope that people would watch season four and be a little surprised because I think we've experienced a very particular side of Benedict.
02:55He's sort of letting himself off the hook a bit with that side.
02:58And so to place him at the center of the show requires him to sort of open up and to fall in love.
03:06And that's not Benedict's comfort zone.
03:10What do you think the costumer's overall vision was in this season of Bridgerton?
03:14Well, I think for Sophie, her main exciting costume was really the lady in silver dress.
03:21Yeah, the lady in silver.
03:22But putting that on, I really did feel like Cinderella.
03:25I remember I was like, oh my God, I'm a princess.
03:28It's like your childhood dream again.
03:30Yeah, I'm a child again.
03:31Yeah.
03:32And not jaded by reality.
03:35I remember John telling me about how with the Penwood house, he wanted a bit more like a higher collar and it being more restricted and darker muted tones to kind of represent Sophie initially.
03:48And then also with hair and makeup, like a tight bun, like very uptight.
03:53Yeah, yeah, yeah.
03:53And then as we go down the line with the story, the color palette is softer.
03:59The necklines are softer.
04:01With Cavender, it's darker purple, but there's like a bit more of a lower neckline.
04:07And there's so many details that go into it.
04:10Going to a costume fitting and watching them argue about like millimeters.
04:15Yeah.
04:15Like being like, oh, that collar just needs to be this or just needs to be that.
04:18The thought and the craft and the skill that goes into making them is sort of mind-boggling.
04:25What do you remember about your first fitting?
04:28Oh, God, that's a long time ago.
04:29Six years ago?
04:30Yeah, six years ago.
04:31Jesus.
04:32It's a very relaxing experience going for a fitting.
04:35Really?
04:35You just get to just wear it.
04:37Do you know what I mean?
04:38Like in a way like they just, it's the fact that every single costume is sort of tailored to you, I guess.
04:45Yeah.
04:45So it's just a really nice feeling going in and just like having like these beautiful fabrics thrown on you and shaped to you.
04:53How long did it take you to get into full costume for your character?
04:56I think for me it was like an hour and a half with makeup and costume, which is on the lighter side compared to what, yeah, because I didn't have a wig.
05:10I mean, I would wear it sometimes for like different scenes like Lady in Silver when I had to have my hair out.
05:15But I was pretty lucky because I played a maid and my hair was a uniform.
05:21So you probably got a more similar experience to what I get.
05:24I was in the middle.
05:25Yes.
05:25Yeah.
05:25And they have to stick these on sometimes, but that's it for me.
05:28Maybe you a bit longer?
05:30There's more to do.
05:31There's always more to do for women, isn't there?
05:32Yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:33And that sucks.
05:34There is.
05:35And that sucks.
05:38How does the Bridgerton set feel compared to other projects you've worked on?
05:41I haven't worked on that many other projects.
05:43But the bar is high.
05:48You came in and you went, Bridgerton, number one Netflix show.
05:52You went, boom.
05:54I've had to sift through.
05:56No, I'm kidding.
05:58I don't have many other projects yet, hopefully.
06:01It's going to be great.
06:02The bar is very, very high.
06:04It's so funny because I think there are some elements of set design that people wouldn't even know.
06:09So, for example, the fact that, like, we filmed the conservatory, for example, scene.
06:13Obviously, we shot the first bit outside.
06:16Yeah.
06:16And the tail, we top and tailed it.
06:18But the center of the scene actually happened in a studio.
06:21And so in that moment, they have to recreate this whole sort of, you know, conservatory structure with, like, you know, make it feel like outside.
06:27And, like, you know, the right flowers and all of that.
06:30And obviously, when you watch the show, you're just like, oh, it's the same location.
06:33Yeah.
06:34It's sort of hard to express, like, how much work goes into it.
06:37And yet, people would not even know sometimes.
06:40Yeah.
06:40Oh, my God.
06:41It's incredible.
06:42Yeah.
06:42The amount of money.
06:43What's something about filming Bridgerton that audiences would never guess from watching it?
06:50Sometimes we wear our slippers.
06:54Yeah.
06:55Instead of heels.
06:56Yeah.
06:56For our close-up shots.
06:58Yeah.
06:58What do you remember?
07:00We were riding in a carriage.
07:02We were riding in a carriage and it had to start raining.
07:05That consisted of us being sort of wait, sort of stationary and a guy up a ladder with a very small pipette and just sort of squirting it at the right moment in my eye.
07:17And me having to be like.
07:18And having to sort of, and it's just so funny that, you know, that's all sort of, like, just off shot.
07:23It's sort of magical, isn't it?
07:24Yeah.
07:25It's like make-believe.
07:26You know, it's sort of, it's quite sweet, really.
07:28Cinema.
07:29Yeah.
07:29Yeah.
07:30The magic of cinema.
07:30What's the best part of filming big ballroom and dinner sequences?
07:36A four or five page scene could take a week, roughly, of filming?
07:40For ballroom scenes.
07:40For ballroom scenes.
07:41Yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:41Because there's so much going on in the background and so much of the show is displaying that aesthetic and everything.
07:48So, yeah, it's a long, long time.
07:50What are you most excited for fans to see this season?
07:53You being a lead.
07:55Aw.
07:56Yeah.
07:57I didn't ask her to say that.
07:59Yeah, he paid me.
07:59It's about time.
08:01It's time and I know.
08:02I've been on this for years.
08:04Yes.
08:04And years.
08:05And it's now your time to shine, sweetie.
08:08Actually, now it's like we get to hand this thing to people.
08:12The next sleeves.
08:13Yeah.
08:14No, I mean to the audience.
08:15Oh, to the audience.
08:16Do you know what I mean?
08:16We get to just hand this show to the audience and just they will make of it what they will.
08:21Yeah.
08:21And that's the nice part.
08:22And it will always be on record.
08:24It will always be on record, yeah.
08:25Which is also kind of scary, but that's also really nice.
08:29Forever and ever.
08:31Mm-hmm.
