00:00Hello, MCU fans! Today is going to be my breakdown of Spider-Man 94, issue number three.
00:05Of course, this is a five-issue limited series, continuing Spider-Man the Animated Series from the 90s.
00:10So, there will be spoilers for the comic, but as long as you're okay with that, then let's dive right in and see what we can find out.
00:16Don't forget, we have a November contest running all month long.
00:19Be a subscriber, leave a comment, you could win a book or a steelbook.
00:22And because we hit 30k subscribers, I'll be awarding five winners this month. Best of luck.
00:27And we have a membership option with lots of cool perks, so you might check it out.
00:30Plus, hang around to the end of the video, and I'll talk about the What If pitch contest on the Discord.
00:36Alright, so this is a breakdown of Spider-Man, issue number three.
00:39And first, let's look at the variant covers for the comic.
00:42So, we have this one, which is continuing the theme of, you know, action figures as though we were buying them back in the 90s. I love that.
00:49This is a great cover from Eric Larson of Spider-Man vs. His Rogues Galleries.
00:53And then we get this one with Venom and Carnage. Really, really cool.
00:56I love all these alternate covers.
00:58Okay, so, we get a quick synopsis of last issue.
01:01After Kane's first failed attempt to bring in Spider-Man,
01:04Moreland took things into his own hands and gave Peter one of the greatest beatdowns of his entire life.
01:11Alright, so let's start with the big reveal from last issue,
01:15which is that Kraven is waiting for the right moment to strike.
01:18We see the Sims Foundation in New York City, and we get a loud roar from his lion.
01:23And then he says,
01:25I'm hoping I pronounced that right.
01:27We don't want to reveal ourselves just yet.
01:30And in fact, his lion was given that name first in Spectacular Spider-Man 253.
01:35So, very comic accurate, same name for his lion.
01:38But indeed, he's looking over the Sims building and saying,
01:40But soon, my friend.
01:42Soon.
01:43And we get the title for issue number three, which is Totems.
01:46And next, let's talk about the other big reveal from issue number two,
01:50and that was that Aunt May knows his secret identity.
01:53Oh, my word.
01:54She says,
01:54He's my nephew.
01:55We've lived side by side under this roof all these years.
01:59How could I not know?
02:00I may be an old woman, Mary Jane, but I'm no fool.
02:03Really good point, right?
02:05She says,
02:05Oh, it took some time to admit it to myself.
02:07It was easier to live in denial.
02:09But, and Mary Jane says,
02:11You were never tempted to tell him?
02:12And she says,
02:13No, I'd never do that to him.
02:16And MJ agrees it is an incredible burden.
02:19Maybe too much for one man.
02:21And May says,
02:22True.
02:22But that doesn't make a difference to our Peter.
02:24You know how he is.
02:26He'll take the whole world on his shoulders,
02:28then ask to carry more.
02:29But it's hard, isn't it?
02:31Living with the secret.
02:32Knowing you could lose him at any moment.
02:34Wondering if what he's doing is worth the risk and pain.
02:37Sometimes I do wonder, says MJ.
02:40But I love him, May, so very much.
02:42And think how difficult Peter's life,
02:44Spider-Man's life, would be without me.
02:47No, without us.
02:50He's always watching out for the world, says May.
02:52That's why the two of us have got to be here
02:54to watch out for him.
02:57All right, so now we shift over to Morlan
02:59as we learn his origin.
03:01He explains,
03:02All right, so I thought this was really cool.
03:23You probably recognize several of these characters.
03:25I mean, there's Arishem, the Celestial.
03:28Icarus, the leader of the Eternals.
03:30That's got to be Thena, right?
03:32I'm pretty sure that's Macari.
03:34And this might be Druig?
03:36A little hard to tell.
03:37But okay, very, very cool.
03:39So he's going all the way back
03:40to the origin of the Celestials,
03:41to the beginning of time, basically.
03:43Then he says,
03:44And among them, among these worlds,
03:46was my home,
03:47the majestic kingdom called Loka.
03:49All right, so obviously,
03:51they're going with a very, very different origin
03:53of Morlan than we saw in the comics.
03:55He says,
03:56I was Prince Morlan,
03:57the child of a foolish king
03:59who died too young,
04:00raised by a mother far stronger and wiser
04:02than her moldering husband.
04:04He says,
04:05She expected me to take the throne one day,
04:07claim it as my own,
04:08restore Loka to past glories.
04:10But much to my mother's dismay,
04:12I rejected what I perceived
04:13as a boring, sedentary existence of a royal
04:16and instead embraced the life
04:18of adventure and exploration.
04:20But I returned home
04:21when the kingdom of my birth
04:22was invaded by an army
04:23of mysterious hybrid creatures,
04:25leading Loka's military
04:26against this invading horde.
04:29These creatures,
04:30these totems,
04:32interesting,
04:33there's our word,
04:34these totems,
04:35as I've come to call them,
04:36had been among us,
04:37hidden in the shadow for centuries,
04:39part human,
04:40part beast.
04:41The totems carried the legacy
04:42of each species,
04:45a living bridge
04:46between both worlds.
04:47And during that fateful battle,
04:49I discovered that I
04:51had a strange connection
04:52to these beings,
04:53that their life force
04:54could feed my own,
04:56transforming me,
04:58granting me
04:58extraordinary abilities,
05:00extending my lifespan
05:02by years,
05:03decades,
05:04millennia.
05:05Had some progenitor of mine,
05:07I wondered,
05:07been one of these beasts?
05:09Was I some mutant
05:11born with the ability
05:12to devour their souls?
05:14I've never learned the answer.
05:15And perhaps that's best.
05:17Life, in the end,
05:18is an unfathomable mystery.
05:20We either embrace it,
05:22or we go mad.
05:23So,
05:23the invaders were repelled,
05:25so time,
05:26as it inevitably does,
05:27swept forward.
05:28Loca fell,
05:29new civilizations rose
05:31from the ashes of the old,
05:32and I lived on.
05:34Crossing continents
05:35and cultures,
05:36always seeking the totems
05:37that, like me,
05:39survived the wars,
05:40the plagues,
05:41the natural disasters
05:42that seemed to forever
05:43haunt humanity.
05:44Always feeding on them,
05:45adding to my power.
05:47But it was a long
05:47and wearying game,
05:49and time and again,
05:50I needed to retreat,
05:51renew myself,
05:52entering a kind of stasis.
05:54Well, that makes sense, right?
05:55We've been seeing him
05:56doing that throughout the comic,
05:57right?
05:58A stasis within a cocoon
05:59of my own weaving,
06:01sometimes for weeks,
06:02sometimes for decades,
06:03and each time I emerged,
06:05and I began the game anew.
06:07But then,
06:09like all of us,
06:09he wanted to know
06:10what was his purpose,
06:12right?
06:12Why?
06:12Why am I here
06:14upon this earth?
06:16Why has this immortal weight
06:17been placed on my shoulders?
06:19Of course,
06:20no divine creator manifested
06:21to answer me,
06:22but an answer came nonetheless.
06:24I had a vision
06:25of a new world
06:26that fused
06:26the greatest achievements
06:27of the long-lost empires
06:29of my youth
06:29with the marvels
06:31of the modern age.
06:32And so,
06:33in London,
06:34200 years ago,
06:35the first seeds
06:36of the Sims Foundation
06:37were sown.
06:38I would inspire humanity,
06:40lift them out of the mud,
06:41lead them toward
06:43a higher destiny.
06:44I began this journey
06:45of global reclamation
06:46as Englishman Gabriel Sims,
06:49hiding the truth
06:50of my immortality
06:51by becoming,
06:52in turn,
06:53Gabriel's sons
06:54and grandsons
06:55and great-grandsons,
06:57playing the part
06:57of both ancestor
06:59and heir.
06:59And now,
07:00today,
07:01I am Ezekiel Sims,
07:02my empire,
07:03far greater than Locas,
07:05encompasses
07:05the entire world.
07:07Okay,
07:08so this idea
07:09of being,
07:09you know,
07:10your son,
07:10your grandson,
07:11your great-grandson,
07:12where have we seen
07:13that before?
07:14That would be
07:15Kingo himself.
07:16Isn't that funny?
07:17So who came up
07:18with the idea first?
07:19Kingo or Ezekiel?
07:20I want to know.
07:21Anyway,
07:22I, Ezekiel,
07:23well, really,
07:24I, Morlin,
07:25am dying,
07:27burning through
07:27the life energies
07:28of my victims
07:29at an accelerated rate.
07:30And soon,
07:31very soon,
07:33those energies
07:34won't be enough
07:35to sustain me.
07:36But how can I leave
07:37this world
07:38before I've freed it
07:39from sin,
07:40before I've raised it
07:41to glory?
07:43That, my friend,
07:44is where you come in.
07:45For you,
07:46I've discovered,
07:47are a new kind of totem
07:48for a new age.
07:50And feasting upon
07:51your unique soul
07:52will grant me
07:53another hundred years
07:55of life.
07:56A hundred years
07:56to bring my vision
07:57to fruition.
07:58And for that,
07:59I will remain
08:00forever indebted
08:01to you,
08:02Spider-Man.
08:03I know the good
08:04you've done,
08:05the tragedies
08:06you've endured
08:06in the name
08:07of that good.
08:08And if there was
08:08another path forward,
08:09I would take it.
08:10But there isn't.
08:11I need what you have,
08:13what you are,
08:14in order to survive.
08:16Do you see now?
08:17Do you understand?
08:18How can I possibly
08:19measure your one life
08:21against the salvation
08:22of the world?
08:24Oh my goodness,
08:25does this guy
08:25have a God complex
08:27or what?
08:28Man, oh man, oh man.
08:29Anyway,
08:30Spider-Man's not too happy
08:31about this idea.
08:32Basically tells him,
08:33uh, no,
08:34I'm not,
08:35I'm not gonna die for you.
08:36To which he says,
08:37I hoped you would
08:38understand.
08:38I hoped you would
08:39willingly give yourself
08:41to me.
08:42But,
08:42what you won't surrender,
08:44I can easily take.
08:46So then Spider-Man
08:47is thinking to himself,
08:49when he attacked me,
08:50referring to last issue,
08:51I had no idea
08:52who Moreland was.
08:53And now,
08:54I realize he may be
08:55the greatest threat
08:56I've ever faced.
08:57He brought me down
08:58without breaking a sweat.
09:00I'm so battered,
09:01in so much pain,
09:02I can't defend myself.
09:04Isn't that nasty?
09:05He's literally
09:06shooting this webbing
09:07out of his mouth.
09:09Yuck.
09:09That is,
09:10that is really gross.
09:11Anyway,
09:12he says,
09:12I have foundation business
09:14to attend to for now,
09:15Spider,
09:15but I will return soon
09:17to begin
09:18the complex process
09:19of making
09:20your power
09:21my own.
09:23Because remember,
09:24he has an avatar
09:25of Ezekiel Sims,
09:27so he's got,
09:28you know,
09:28to go off and do
09:28a little bit of
09:29company bureaucracy.
09:30Anyway,
09:31Spider-Man thinks to himself,
09:33the amazing Spider-Man,
09:34trapped in a web.
09:35It's almost funny,
09:36but I don't feel
09:37like laughing.
09:39But then,
09:39Cain shows up,
09:41kind of to rub some salt
09:42in the open wound.
09:43He says,
09:43so still,
09:44so vulnerable.
09:45What would my father do,
09:46I wonder,
09:47if I killed
09:48his precious spider totem?
09:50Then,
09:50angrily,
09:51he says,
09:51why are you so important?
09:53Why do you have
09:54such value
09:55that he needs you
09:56more than he needs
09:57his son,
09:58Cain?
09:59He goes on,
10:00saying,
10:00something about this spider
10:02confuses me
10:02and touches me
10:04in a way that I can
10:05neither fathom nor explain,
10:07as if he holds
10:08the key to my own origins.
10:10Keep that in mind,
10:11because I think I know
10:12what's going on with this dude,
10:13but hold on to that.
10:14Anyway,
10:15the gaps in my memory,
10:16what is it,
10:16spider?
10:17Why do you,
10:19and then,
10:19he has a memory.
10:20He remembers back
10:21in issue number one,
10:22when he came busting
10:23through that window,
10:24you know,
10:24to kidnap Peter Parker.
10:25And he says,
10:26a tsunami of thought,
10:27of feeling,
10:28just as I felt
10:29when I abducted him
10:30from the Parker house,
10:32which was issue number one.
10:33But it's stronger now,
10:35as if all that he's done,
10:37all that he knows,
10:38all that he is,
10:40is within me.
10:42He adds,
10:43one feeling,
10:44one soul,
10:45rises above the rest,
10:47the woman.
10:48How is this happening?
10:50Why is this happening?
10:53What are you,
10:54spider?
10:55And more importantly,
10:56what am I?
10:58And then,
10:59as we see,
10:59Cain leaves,
11:01because now,
11:01we're going to see,
11:02Spider-Man break free.
11:04And this,
11:05this is really,
11:06really cool.
11:06I love how they illustrated
11:07this in the comic.
11:08All right,
11:09so we see him sitting there,
11:10trapped in the webbing.
11:11I guess,
11:11I guess that's webbing,
11:12right?
11:12And then he says,
11:13I,
11:14I can't just give up.
11:17I can't let Moreland win.
11:20After all,
11:21that Mary Jane and I
11:22went through,
11:22to be together again.
11:25All we suffered,
11:27all we sacrificed,
11:29I can't let him win.
11:34And he breaks out of the webbing.
11:36I love that.
11:37That is so cool.
11:38In fact,
11:38I'm going to spin quickly through it,
11:40because I just love how they illustrated this.
11:42So you see him there,
11:43and then he just gets angry,
11:46and starts to rock back and forth,
11:48reaching his arms out slowly,
11:49until he finally,
11:51completely breaks free.
11:53Very,
11:54very cool.
11:55All right,
11:55he says,
11:56it's about more than just us.
11:58Who knows what damage Moreland will do to the world,
12:01in the name of some twisted vision of salvation,
12:04in the name of paradise?
12:07Well,
12:07Spider-Man may be free,
12:08but he's about to discover a new monstrosity.
12:11He says,
12:12okay,
12:12Parker,
12:12try to clear your head,
12:14push through this pain,
12:15figure out where you are.
12:17Moreland said he had foundation business to attend to,
12:20so maybe we're in the Sims building,
12:22and maybe this door will lead me to a way out,
12:27or maybe not.
12:28Oh man,
12:29what is this nastiness,
12:30right?
12:31In fact,
12:31that's what Spider-Man's asking himself.
12:33He says,
12:34it's as if Moreland's cobbled it together,
12:36from the severed parts of a dozen men and animals.
12:39But why would he do that?
12:40It makes no sense,
12:42unless he's been creating his own synthetic totems,
12:45as a way to prolong his own life.
12:47But then this thing breaks free,
12:49and he's like,
12:50easy big fella,
12:51I don't mean you any,
12:52well,
12:53this guy means him harm,
12:54just smacks him upside the head,
12:56he grabs him by the leg,
12:58throttles him on the ground,
13:00and then poor Peter lays there saying,
13:03I'm so sorry, MJ,
13:04I just can't fight anymore.
13:08Speaking of MJ,
13:09turns out that Kane,
13:10who of course left Spider-Man's side,
13:12has gone to her seeking answers.
13:14So we see her laying there in bed,
13:16and then she hears a creaking noise,
13:18asks Peter,
13:19is that,
13:20no,
13:21it is not Peter,
13:22it's Kane,
13:23asking,
13:23why is this happening to me?
13:26And then he rips off his mask,
13:28and said,
13:28why am I feeling these things?
13:32Okay,
13:32so look at that face,
13:34and tell me if you think,
13:36it's meant to be Peter,
13:39or perhaps a clone of Peter.
13:41I mean,
13:41the same nose,
13:43the same eyebrows,
13:44the same facial structure.
13:45Is that why Kane has all of his feelings and emotions?
13:49In particular,
13:50he asks,
13:51why do I love you?
13:54Well,
13:54again,
13:54if he's a clone of Spider-Man,
13:56that would certainly explain it.
13:57So,
13:57let me know your thoughts on that.
13:59You know,
13:59is he a clone,
14:00and if so,
14:01why?
14:01And how?
14:03I mean,
14:03is this somehow tied back to Professor Warren
14:05and his cloning experiments
14:07back from the animated series?
14:09Well,
14:09anyway,
14:09back to poor Spider-Man,
14:11he's gotten his strength back,
14:12he says,
14:12I've faced Dr. Octopus,
14:14Venom,
14:14Hydra-Man,
14:15Carnage,
14:16and lived to tell the tale.
14:18If I can just find the strength to get up,
14:21I'll beat this thing.
14:23But then,
14:23as it's roaring towards him,
14:25somebody comes jumping in the window,
14:27I'm sure you can guess who,
14:28right?
14:28Craven the Hunter,
14:29and jabs the spear through this creature.
14:33Oh,
14:33wow.
14:34Not playing around.
14:37And in fact,
14:38yes,
14:38we see it is dead on the ground.
14:40And Spider-Man looks up,
14:42astonished,
14:42and says,
14:43I don't believe it.
14:45Craven!
14:46And Craven responds,
14:48indeed.
14:49And the time has come,
14:50Spider-Man.
14:51The final hunt ends,
14:54and as Spider-Man looks up,
14:55going,
14:55wait,
14:56wait,
14:56I thought you were here to help me,
14:58the spear goes jabbing down,
15:00and then Craven finishes by saying,
15:03tonight.
15:04Oh,
15:04man,
15:05what a cliffhanger,
15:06right?
15:06Now,
15:07I'm hoping he jabbed that
15:08spear into the creature
15:09to make sure it's dead,
15:10but we'll have to wait for next issue
15:12to find out.
15:13In fact,
15:13next issue is titled
15:14Heart of the Hunter.
15:16Okay,
15:17so before we go,
15:17a quick refresher on the timeline.
15:19On the top,
15:20we're tracking X-Men,
15:21the animated series.
15:22On the bottom is Spider-Man,
15:23the animated series.
15:24And in the middle is any time
15:26the two of them cross over.
15:27In the lower right-hand corner,
15:29we have Spider-Man 94,
15:30issues one through five,
15:31which in previous videos,
15:33I've laid that out as being in June of 1997.
15:36Nothing in this issue
15:37made me think we've left June,
15:39so that's where we're at for now.
15:41And eventually,
15:41that leads to the X-Men,
15:42the animated series crossovers,
15:44with,
15:44of course,
15:45the awesome appearance
15:46of Peter Parker and MJ
15:47in X-Men 97,
15:48season one,
15:49episode 10.
15:50All right,
15:51so now we wait for issue number four
15:52to arrive,
15:53and it's coming on Christmas Eve.
15:55What on earth?
15:56So,
15:56I'll try to do a breakdown that day,
15:58but that might be tough.
15:59If nothing else,
16:00it'll be within the next few days.
