Minister for North America and Europe in the Foreign Office, Stephen Doughty, says that the UK will "have discussions" with the US administration to "remind them of the strength" of the deal the UK struck last year to hand over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. "The agreement we have struck is vital for protecting our national security and that of our allies", Doughty tells MPs.

00:00We have been absolutely clear that the UK will never compromise on our national security,
00:05as we have made repeatedly clear the agreement we have struck is vital for protecting our national security
00:10and that of our allies and guaranteeing the long-term future of a base that is crucially important for the UK and the United States.
00:17Our deal secures the operations of the joint US-UK base on Diego Garcia for generations.
00:21It's got that backing across five eyes, as well as other international partners.
00:24I would remind her very, very clearly that in May the US Secretary of State said
00:30the Trump administration has determined that this agreement secures the long-term, stable and effective operation
00:36of the joint US-UK military facility on Diego Garcia.
00:39We will of course have discussions with the administration in the coming days
00:42to remind them of the strength of this deal and how it secures the base.
