"That you can't suddenly have anyone have an apolitical position, or thinking about the message that it's sending out, there's no comedy."
Transcript
00:00my show came of age for eight episodes that i've done so far because i'm we've been on so long
00:10when the when the weinstein and all that started happening and so suddenly people were like oh it
00:17takes on new relevance because yeah i'm like really because women have been getting a finger
00:21up their twat for like 20 years longer than that it's like it's like so so suddenly now but it is
00:28it is sort of like events are going to come and go and come and go but this stuff is sort of here to
00:33stay and i think that that what is wonderful about streaming and cable is that i think they're more
00:39willing to allow a comedy to have a deeper meaning or or back away from the laughs for a few minutes
00:47and have a real conversation yes we're entertainment and we're you know look over here and here's my
00:53tap shoes i get that but people get very they personally attached to television it means
00:59you're in someone's home yeah i mean you're in their house you can't give me a curfew i'm a 26 year
01:05old woman i have two children as long as you're living under this roof my rules apply mama this is
01:10a tad over dramatic don't you think you could have been dead and dismembered in an alley i'm going to
01:15bed that's it i've changed my mind no jack bar for you what because of your behavior tonight i'm not
01:20buying you a tv see there are consequences lesson learned good now go to your room i think comedy's
01:27heading into a very dangerous place right now and i'm very worried about there's there's some some
01:33weird on that i'm i'm not i'm not if we start not being able to do stories because view through the
01:41lens of me too or this that you can't suddenly have anyone have an apolitical position or it or
01:48thinking about the message that it's sending out there's no comedy comedy is the worst thing about
01:54what you just no one's seen it like you know well there's the outrage addiction i think we're all
01:59sort of into people literally stopped at the word white in my title and like he is causing a genocide
02:05for white people which i am roseanne was an anomaly then because look roseanne was my first job and i
02:17was new to writing i didn't really even think i was going to be a writer i thought i was going to be a
02:22dancer and pay my rent that was hilarious um that's the funniest thing i've ever said ever but um so when
02:29i got on roseanne i didn't realize that she had banned the studio and the network from the show
02:34so it wasn't until i got onto my next show that we had a bad table read and i was gathering up my
02:40stuff to go back to my office and i'm they're all sitting there and i'm like what the fuck are you
02:44sitting here for and they're like we have to get notes i'm like from who we have a lot of work to do
02:47and they go from these and i look there's a line of people in in the same suit with a pencil
02:52on page three and i'm like who are literally they thought i was from outer space so
02:56like the thing about roseanne is i don't remember a time where we couldn't do anything that we didn't
03:01want to do mostly because nobody was allowed in the room to tell us we couldn't do it you know maybe
03:05there were phone calls or a memo or something but she didn't give a shit so it was like it didn't
03:09happen i don't think that when i started it was like the heyday of like the 70s when they really
03:14could do shit because i was at this sort of the very beginning of when the marketing department
03:19took over network television which is kind of what it is now and which is why i've fled network
03:24television for uh the wonderful world of of amazon for me it's it's less about what you can
03:30get away with and more about the format and the kind of storytelling that you want to tell
03:36there is nowhere to be but the streaming networks or cable or something like that because they're
03:42the only people open to oh this is how you want to tell your story or these are the people that you
03:48want to cast or this network it's still like it's the hot you it's the hot girl the thin girl with a gun
03:53that's that's i don't know that's what i'm gonna give you a gun you're gonna run around and go
03:59freeze what show is that i don't know it's every show i turn on this i will love to pre-read for
04:06that show i'm available whoever makes that show the hot girl with a gun show i'm available
04:11we have to accept that there is going to be very offensive jokes there's going to be jokes that
04:24cross the line there's going to be kathy griffin holding up donald trump's head and i got to tell
04:29you something i was very disappointed in the hollywood community for not coming to her
04:33defense because i thought they hung that girl out to dry like i've never seen anyone hung out to dry
04:39before i didn't think it was funny i didn't i wouldn't have personally thought hey yeah this
04:44is going to be my but who the fuck cares comedians are supposed to go out there and push the boundaries
04:50so that the rest of us know where the fuck's going well good because i was just i was like literally
04:56like where is the hollywood community where is the comedy community where are we that we let that
05:03girl take that hit like that yeah for doing a bad fucking joke we've all done bad jokes it just
05:08didn't speak for you well not you not you not you and and you're from sweden so but but the rest of us
05:15you
