"Artists give so much and so to make fun of what was a challenge and an illness, and the great thing about our writers is they were like 'Absolutely, we'll just do something else,'" Hall told the Comedy Actress Roundtable.

00:00For better or for worse, how do you wish you were more like your character?
00:08Dawn is unapologetic, and I like that. In a man's world, and she's driven, you know,
00:13she's driven like a man. And sometimes, I don't even know what that means, but I think sometimes
00:18when women are driven, you know, and we're a little apologetic for being, you know, driven,
00:24but she's not. And so there are just things about her strength, even when, you know,
00:31she doesn't have it together, that she still plows through that I like.
00:35I think one of the things you've talked about with Black Monday is this idea that you were excited
00:40not to be the sort of the joy killer. And there were certain things about this role that were
00:46freeing for you. Can you speak a little bit to that? And what made you say, yeah?
00:52It was great to be able to be in the 80s and be successful and be in a world that's,
00:58no matter what color you are, a woman who's, you know, Spanish, black, white,
01:04they just weren't in really Wall Street, and they still really aren't. So to represent a demographic
01:09that's not normally present in a world, even today, was fun. But then for her to be as cunning,
01:17as sharp, and as wild, and unapologetic, and kind of, you know, she's as gross as the men.
01:25She just knows that there are moments where business has to get taken care of, or it won't
01:30get done. But she's not judgmental of it. And I liked to be able to do that. Because I find that
01:35most women who I know are like that. They're quite fun, and quite delightful, and quite smart,
01:42and dirty, and a little raunchy, and, you know, all things. And they're not just, not you.
01:48There's no raunch in this one.
01:50It's me.
01:52Definitely not you. You're a wallflower.
01:55But, you know, none of the women here, you know, they're so complex. And I think it's sometimes we
02:01don't get to show the complexity of who we are. And that was just interesting to play.
02:11What have you learned from how to handle the peaks, as well as how to handle the valleys?
02:16I feel like with everything, you have to just enjoy where you are. What's for you is for you.
02:21I think when I first started, I thought that you got to a place where it was done.
02:26But it's not always, it's not in the way that you think. There's always work. It's not a destination
02:33arrived, if that makes sense.
02:36That makes sense to me. Very much so.
02:38Okay. Okay, good.
02:39We're cool.
02:40All right. That makes me so happy.
02:42No, but it does, because I agree with you in that I thought that it would look like what I thought it
02:47would look like.
02:48Yes. And then you thought it'd feel different, that you'd feel settled, like, oh, I've...
02:52Well, the sense of I'll never get another job never goes away. I can tell you that.
02:55That's exactly what I mean, and I thought that wouldn't.
02:57My dad had it until the day he died, and I have it, and it never goes away, and it's fine.
03:08What are the things where you say, I'm not going to say that?
03:10Yeah, we do that. I mean, there was a joke, and I can't remember, but it was a joke, I think,
03:16about drugs, and it was about Whitney Houston, and I was like, I don't want to say that.
03:20You know, we can, you know, artists give so much, you know what I mean?
03:25And so, to make fun of what was a challenge and an illness, you know what I mean?
03:31And the great thing about our writers is they were like, absolutely, we'll just do something else.
03:36Yeah, I identify with that.
03:37I don't like that kind of, like, low-hanging fruit, snarky humor.
03:40I'm like, there are so many real jokes out there, and there's so much funny, weird shit happening all the time.
03:45Like, why that?
03:47All right, complete this sentence.
03:48I knew I made it in Hollywood when?
03:51I think sometimes, you know what makes me feel that way?
03:54When you meet people who you admire, and they know your work.
03:57That's a moment when I feel it, because most of the time, I don't expect people to know me.
04:04And so, when it's someone I love, you know, the first time I admire, and then they go, I love your work.
04:09That is when I feel like, okay, you know, it's that.
04:14We'll see you next time.
04:14We'll see you next time.
04:15Bye-bye, bye-bye.
04:16Bye-bye.
04:16Bye-bye.
04:18Bye-bye.
04:18Bye-bye.
04:18Bye.
04:19Bye-bye.
04:20Bye-bye.
