Drier, warmer days on the horizon starting January 19, 2026, following days of torrential rain in parts of the country.
Transcript
00:00Hello, this is Angus at the Bureau of Meteorology. New week, new forecast. It's
00:04Monday the 19th of January. We're here with the National Weather Forecast. Let's
00:08take a look at what will be going on around the country on Tuesday. And
00:12compared to most days in 2026, Tuesday shows us quite a settled weather pattern
00:18across the nation. Now when it comes to rainfall, a few areas to watch. Onshore
00:22winds bring some showers to the New South Wales coast. We also expect to see
00:26some development of thunderstorms over both inland parts of New South Wales
00:29and inland parts of Queensland during the day on Tuesday. There will be the usual
00:35mix of showers and thunderstorms across the tropics, but most other areas are
00:39looking to be dry, thanks in large part to this high-pressure region south of WA.
00:43That is keeping sunny skies for many areas, but it's also driving quite a
00:47strong wind in some places and that wind will contribute towards intense heat
00:52building around parts of the north and west of WA. Let's do the state flyovers
00:57now. We'll start up in Queensland and we will see some showers and thunderstorms
01:01across northern areas from around about Townsville northwards. We also will see
01:06some afternoon thunderstorms over inland areas, particularly the central west
01:10forecast region. And that means a possible thunderstorm and spell of rain in and
01:15around the Longreach area, especially from mid-afternoon onwards. Across the east coast,
01:20from Mackay down to Brisbane, a really nice and bright day. Possibly a light shower or two, but plenty of sunny weather through your day. A high of 29th of rain.
01:27Onshore winds mean often cloudy skies and some light showers across the New South
01:34Wales coast, particularly through the morning. In the afternoon those showers and
01:37that cloud should break up and let some sunnier, brighter weather through. There
01:42will be a few thunderstorms out over the far west of New South Wales, collecting
01:45some communities west of the mountain ranges. But along the mountains we're sort
01:50of missing the east and missing the west and getting some nice weather. For
01:53example, Canberra should have a nice mostly sunny day with a high of 27. Sunny weather
01:59throughout most of Victoria on Tuesday. There'll be a couple of showers and maybe
02:03even the odd rumble of thunder on and north of the mountain ranges. But all that
02:08rain will be very hit and miss, so doesn't look like those active firegrounds in the
02:12north of the state. We'll see much or any rainfall tomorrow. Should be dry through
02:17southern areas. A high of 28 degrees in Melbourne. A little breezy across some of
02:21the southern coastline. Really a nice looking day for Tasmania. Southern stunner
02:26down here. We might see the lightest of showers around the St Helens coastline up
02:31through this region here. But all the rest of the state will be having bright skies
02:35and mostly sunny weather. Very little wind across Tasmania tomorrow as well. Hobart
02:39tracking for a lovely 25 degree afternoon. There is a little bit more wind for South
02:45Australia. That's wind up from the south and that's going to keep a bit of cloud
02:48across some southern coastlines around the peninsulas and islands as well. But
02:52generally into the afternoon a lot of that cloud should burn away and the sun
02:55will come out for the second half of the day. Temperatures are mild out through
02:59western spots. Ceduna just 23 degrees. A little bit warmer through the east here.
03:04Adelaide, Murray Bridge, Mount Gambier headed forwards 30 or 31 and we'll see some
03:09breezy conditions in some spots like Wyala and Port Augusta. A dry
03:14and mostly sunny day expected in Western Australia. Getting really hot across the
03:18west coast as well. You see Geraldton that stands out here with that 45 degree
03:22forecast. That heat is spreading down into Perth as well. 39 degrees in the
03:26capital. Maybe 40 or higher for some of those eastern suburbs. It's also going to
03:30be really hot up in the northwest of the state. The temperatures here probably don't
03:34quite do it justice. For example, Exmouth 40 degrees but if you drive an hour
03:38inland it could be closer to 48 or 49 degrees. Cooler across the south coast with a bit of cloud. But no
03:44rain expected in any of these centres. And finally to our northern regions. We're
03:50keeping an eye on a tropical low pressure area which could develop
03:53somewhere near the Kimberley coast later this week. That's perhaps looking a
03:56little less likely than it was a few days ago but still something we're watching
04:00closely. And even if that weather system doesn't develop we'll see a regular mix
04:05of wet season showers and thunderstorms across the northern parts of the
04:08territory including around the Darwin area. Also through the Kimberley where some
04:12thunderstorms may come with some damaging wind gusts. Central Australia is headed
04:16for a 40 degree day with clear blue skies. That is all I have for you for
04:21today. As per usual you can get more weather information on the Bureau's
04:25website or app. But thanks for sticking with me. Have a lovely day.
