00:01Listen to that sound.
00:03I mean, this is an electric car.
00:06Are you ready?
00:07Yes.
00:09This is a drift optimizer mode.
00:12Only for drifting.
00:16So, do I need to warm up the thirst?
00:18Whoa!
00:22Two minutes of power.
00:24Easy, easy.
00:30Whoa!
00:31Yeah!
00:32Yeah!
00:37This is amazing!
00:39You're a tiger killer!
00:40Wow!
00:45Oh, my God!
00:46Wow!
00:47I can't believe this!
00:49Yeah, this is from Korea!
00:51Wow!
00:52This is the future.
00:57I'm Sung Kang.
00:58You may know me from The Fast and Furious.
01:02I'm passionate about cars in real life, too.
01:05And it's not just the thrill of driving.
01:08Cars are a gateway into diverse and often overlooked cultures.
01:13Connecting exciting communities and people.
01:15Sounds like a jet engine!
01:17So, this is my dream job.
01:19Taking you on a global road trip.
01:21To see how cars are changing our world.
01:24And making all of us a little better.
01:26Ooh!
01:27This is the ride line.
01:28Ooh!
01:29I left Korea when I was only one year old with my mom and stepdad.
01:31So, I don't have a strong connection to my country of birth.
01:33Wow!
01:34Look at that!
01:35But I'm so proud of the progress the country has made.
01:36It's amazing how the world is embracing everything that is Korean.
01:43From the food.
01:44To the music.
01:45To the movies.
01:46To the movies.
01:47To the TV shows.
01:48To the fashion.
01:49And now, with the cars.
01:50And now, with the cars.
01:51It's amazing how the world is embracing everything that is Korean.
01:55From the food.
01:56To the music.
01:57To the movies.
01:58To the movies.
01:59To the TV shows.
02:00To the fashion.
02:01And now, with the cars.
02:02The possibilities are endless.
02:04Yet the car culture faces some big hurdles.
02:05Right now, people think that there is no car culture here because there are all these limitations.
02:17Import taxes.
02:18Restrictions on modifications.
02:19Emission standards.
02:20Driving penalties.
02:21The list goes on.
02:22They've all combined to hinder the car scene.
02:41But with the help of an old friend, I'm hoping to uncover the hidden gems of K-Car culture.
02:48Jun Park, I haven't seen this guy in like 24 years.
02:54We met each other at the beginning of our career.
02:59He was part of this band called G.O.D.
03:02And we did a music video for this song called Lies.
03:06And that became like a runaway hit.
03:09Hello.
03:11What's up?
03:13What's up, man?
03:15Dude, you haven't changed.
03:17Your hair is different, but you look the same.
03:20Still working out?
03:21Oh, yeah.
03:22With the help of Jun Park and his connections, I'm hoping Korean car culture can give me a sense of belonging in my country of birth.
03:29Ready? One, two, get it.
03:31Car tour, man.
03:32Jun hosted a car TV show and covers cars on YouTube.
03:36And he owns my kind of project car.
03:38And there she is.
03:41What?
03:50It's nothing big, but it's something that touches home like when we were kids.
03:56Nothing much to look at.
03:58When I got this car to tune on it, I'm like, it has the old like E30 or E36 feel.
04:04Yeah.
04:05And, but it's like a fraction of the cost.
04:08What?
04:09I love that you keep all the original.
04:11Yeah, yeah, yeah.
04:12I don't want to.
04:13Look at that.
04:14The Pride was an affordable compact car from the 80s and 90s.
04:17This was made to last.
04:18Not the ride you'd expect for a celebrity.
04:20Yeah.
04:21Yeah.
04:22It's not a super car.
04:23It's charisma.
04:24Charisma, yes.
04:25Charisma.
04:26So this car is the equivalent of the Honda Civic in the States.
04:31And they used these cars for competition back in the day.
04:35What?
04:36A trick hydraulic suspension is June's twist to the Pride's pretensions on the racetrack.
04:42I just wanted to keep this one kind of original.
04:45Everything was original except the paint was kind of jacked up.
04:48I haven't seen any of these cars on the road.
04:51I see nothing old.
04:52Korea is very trend oriented.
04:55Like whenever the new cell phone comes up, every like six to eight months, right,
05:00people change their cell phones.
05:02But everything that's new isn't the best because later on when you're older,
05:06what you're going to do is you're going to try to think back of the best times of your life,
05:10which was back in the day.
05:11Yeah.
05:12So you're going to try to search those things out that you couldn't acquire back then
05:15or you had and you want to rekindle with, right?
05:17I try to teach people that, but you know, I mean, this car, it's a testament of time.
05:23Yeah, I want to drive.
05:24Yeah, you want to go?
05:25Let's go, man.
05:26Let's go.
05:27It feels great.
05:32It's smooth.
05:33It sounds great too.
05:35Sounds and feels good, but this is a very slow car.
05:38You like this?
05:39I don't like it.
05:40I love it.
05:41Like me, Joon Park was raised in the States, but he moved to Korea to launch his K-pop career.
05:46I came to a smaller pond, but because I was different, I wasn't the normal Korean.
05:52I don't have the typical handsome guy Korean face.
05:55Maybe that helped me out.
05:56Well, you have the typical handsome guy face.
05:59You're the more pretty guy.
06:01No, you have that look.
06:03You have that pretty.
06:04I don't know if that's a compliment.
06:06In Korea, that's a huge compliment.
06:08I'm trying to figure out, like, what is car culture in Korea?
06:14What is it?
06:15It's not like California where we have, like, vast amounts of land where you could have car
06:20meets all over the place, right?
06:21Right.
06:22There aren't that many places with car meets.
06:25It's almost like underground.
06:27Huh.
06:28Joon is taking me to the outskirts of the city to meet the guy who did the flawless paint
06:33job on his pride.
06:35What?
06:38The hydraulics?
06:39Oh.
06:40Slam.
06:43Wow.
06:44He has all these Fast and Furious cars.
06:46Yeah.
06:47He's a big fan of yours.
06:49Wow.
06:50I can't believe this car is here.
06:52Hello.
06:53Hello.
06:57In the middle of nowhere, you would never think a factory like this is here.
07:04This one is his own project, meaning he designed the kit from body up and he did the paint,
07:09he did the whole car.
07:11Like, it's his design.
07:12Wow.
07:13Pretty decent, right?
07:14Yeah.
07:15I mean, I've seen a lot of replica cars.
07:16Uh-huh.
07:17And if I were to give like a grade of like one to ten, these are at tens.
07:22Hawksun teams up with another local craftsman for extreme paint jobs, like this Fast replica
07:27Mitsubishi Eclipse.
07:28These aren't stickers.
07:29He painted them.
07:30Yeah.
07:31This is not easy to do.
07:32That's original.
07:33Yeah.
07:34Yeah.
07:35This is not easy to do.
07:36That's original.
07:37Yeah.
07:38Yeah.
07:39The difficulties Hawksun's talking about include foreign occupations.
08:11and economic hardship.
08:16As recently as the 1960s, average annual income was less than 100 US dollars.
08:23It's a history that drives Koreans to succeed.
08:28The body work on the stunning Veilside RX-7 is from a kit.
08:47But Hawks prefers to create his own designs.
08:50Hand shaping foam directly on the car.
08:54From this, he'll create a mold for replacement fiberglass or carbon fiber panels.
09:02Can I help?
09:03Can I help?
09:04Can I help?
09:05Can I help?
09:08I'll sit here.
09:09I did enough sanding at the surf shop when I used to work in the 80s and 90s.
09:12I'm going to see how good Sung is.
09:15I'm coming in hot, let's take a look.
09:16If you can see it, it's really thick.
09:17I can feel it.
09:18I can feel it.
09:19If you can see it, it's really thick.
09:20It's a thick.
09:21It's a thick.
09:22It's a thick.
09:23It's a thick.
09:24Okay.
09:25All right.
09:26He looks at a lot of coupes with the wide bodies and then he puts it in his head and
09:32he does everything by hand, freestyle.
09:36This is all by touch and feel.
09:38You put this foam here and slowly just shaving this away and just sculpting a shape into this
09:46card from your head to your hands and from your heart.
09:49heart is to create beauty in something that doesn't exist all right let me give it back to him so i
09:56don't mess it up soon it's not gonna be a wide body it'll be a narrow body koreans are not big
10:02on hugs but they show affection through food and a meal is a sure sign that hawksun appreciates my
10:08visit everyone in korea knows what jajangman is it's a black bean sauce it's almost like it's
10:14like asian spaghetti mouthwaters it's been great catching up with you and it's like an honor for
10:31me to be in korea and see someone who is so passionate about cars and this level of
10:37craftsmanship and this quest for me to answer is there car culture in korea if this is a reflection
10:45of where car culture is and where it's gonna go it's like definitely yes it's so inspiring thank
10:51you thank you brother thank you and you inhaled that thing dude i love it you should have ordered
10:57kopegi kopegi jajangman is like large this is like kid's size kopegi is a big bowl
11:02listen to this thing please it's like a k-pop song just singing singing i love to drive i love you
11:21at the push of a button hyundai's ionic 5n simulates the sounds and gear shifts of a high
11:35performance petrol car this is what a sports car supposed to do is it's supposed to wake you up
11:40right it's supposed to make you feel alive i can't believe this car is coming out of korea i truly am
11:47shocked and completely impressed and this is a ev car i'm heading just north of seoul to find the
11:56workshop of wootak seo he's the guy who did the amazing paint job in huksoons eclipse
12:03wootak is another outlier his passion is old impalas and old lowriders from california
12:11i want to know how and why lowriding culture has gained a foothold in korea because to me it
12:18makes no sense at all hey with taxi yeah oh nice to meet you oh look at this place i feel like i'm in
12:31LA. Wow. It's a real Chicano. Yeah, Chicano. Chicano with a K. That's right.
12:40Lowriders emerged in the 1940s amongst LA's Mexican community. And there's a
12:47big following in Japan. In Korea, the high annual road use and import taxes limit
12:54who can access these beauties. I have a deep connection with Impala.
13:00Where did you get the car? In Japan. In Japan. Just came like that. I like that. It looked like that.
13:17It looked like that. It looked like that. Whoa.
13:22I'm changing the old bumper and the chrome and the engraving.
13:29Everything is so detailed. It's amazing. My boss, he's the only one that does this
13:40kind of work in Korea. Raya Moon joined the Louis Steel Custom Crew so that he could be
13:45mentored by WooTalk in the Lowrider style. Without him, I couldn't learn this type of thing.
13:51So you learn how to do this by yourself? Yeah, YouTube.
13:56YouTube. Say YouTube, guys. You can learn everything on YouTube.
14:02How long did this take you to finish this? Two and a half years. That's pretty fast.
14:08That's a 빨리, 빨리 mentality. That's pretty good for you.
14:13Wow, they're doing Fast and Furious replica car? Yeah, yeah, yeah. And my project.
14:19There's, like, lots of fans in here. Especially you. What?
14:24That's two workshops in a row with Fast and Furious replica cars?
14:28Are you ready? I am.
14:30Ooh, what is this? My food truck.
14:38Wow, this is crazy. I don't think there is another food truck like this in the world.
14:54Huh? Not at all. Not that I've seen.
14:58The main idea of this project was to break the boundaries of this Lowrider culture by serving
15:04food so the people can actually come by us and fill the car, look at the paint jobs,
15:09and enjoy the culture. So you're using food to have the connection,
15:14and then you're introducing the Lowrider culture to them. Very smart.
15:18Wu Talk guided Ryan through the week-long process of masking up and spray painting layer after layer.
15:25I believe it's my job, just like how my brother passed his knowledge and skills to me.
15:31So when I become the Papa, I can spread my mind to the younger kids.
15:35Oh, too shy.
15:38Look at him. This guy is shy.
15:44Hey, boy, you sure want to drive it? It's a big car.
15:46I do. I never turn down the opportunity to drive something.
15:50All right.
16:01This is fun to drive.
16:10Cruising is a big part of Lowriding culture.
16:17A group gets together and drive slow and slow.
16:20So what made you a car guy?
16:31You know, when I was a little kid, I would walk around my neighborhood.
16:35I didn't have a lot of friends, and then there was an old Korean War vet.
16:40You know, he was always restoring his 63 Impella, and I would just sit there,
16:46like, you know, in the evenings and ask him questions.
16:50Just that feeling of comfort and safety in a garage made me always, like, love old cars.
16:59I told you, you break it, you got to fix it.
17:20Okay, let's cook some burgers.
17:22WooTalk has asked some of his friends and family to meet us down by the river
17:30to test out his menu of sliders and fries.
17:33Where did you learn how to cook?
17:34Oh, YouTube.
17:35YouTube.
17:36Wow, so many people.
17:42I told you the people's gonna flow in.
17:45Hello.
17:47Hi.
17:48Brisket, you're welcome.
17:49Cheeseburger and brisket made with passion.
17:54For you, here you go.
17:57Please have a seat in the car.
18:05Seeing WooTalk and now Ryan sharing their passion,
18:08it's building what Koreans call Jung.
18:11Feelings of loyalty and strong emotional connection.
18:15That's one of the things I've been searching for in Korea.
18:19It's all about good?
18:23Oh, yeah.
18:25High five?
18:26All right.
18:28It feels like a family barbecue, man.
18:31We have these cool classic cars and hanging out with friends and eating burgers.
18:38Beautiful night.
18:38Thank you, guys.
18:39Peace.
18:39I haven't been here in 10 years,
18:52so I had no idea that Fast and Furious had such an impact or an influence within car culture in Korea.
19:00It makes me wonder whether the global success of the Korean film and TV industry
19:07could soon be shaping car cultures.
19:11That's the trigger to visit Jung Won Lee,
19:15a local pioneer of car cinematography.
19:18I'm looking forward to meeting Jung Won and see how he approaches filmmaking.
19:24Because as a director myself, I want to push the boundaries and give like a fresh perspective on
19:30how to capture the essence and the soul of cars and tell stories with them.
19:34There sure are a lot of FDs in this country.
19:41Look at this car.
19:43Wow.
19:44Hello.
19:44Hello.
19:45Nice to meet you.
19:45Nice to meet you.
19:46Wow.
19:47Welcome to my garage.
19:47Wow.
19:48Yes.
19:52Jung Won's business straddles cinematography and car modifications.
19:56I love cars and my crews and other staff loves cars too.
20:02It makes us like a family.
20:08I'm shocked and amazed that you have these Ukraine arms here.
20:12This is amazing.
20:13This looks like it came from Hollywood.
20:15We're usually doing some commercial films or some dramas or movies.
20:22So where did you like start?
20:24Where was your inspiration to become a director?
20:27It started with the Fast and Furious series.
20:29With Fast and Furious?
20:30Yes.
20:31When I was 19, the first movie, the Fast and Furious came out.
20:36I started taking the videos with a very small action camera.
20:43It's just a hobby and a lot of my footages are uploaded on YouTube.
20:49Some guys from the car brands, the marketers contact me too.
20:55How about making their commercial films with me?
20:59Wow.
20:59That's good.
21:00That's good.
21:03I'm planning to shooting some short car chasing scenes.
21:08How about you join our crews?
21:10I would love to.
21:12The plate slide is here.
21:14Junwen is giving me the role of camera head operator.
21:21Sounds simple, but it's not.
21:23The front is heavy.
21:24So we have to move the cameras a little bit backward.
21:30It's not as fun as being in front of the camera.
21:34It's remote control for the head.
21:37This is just a test shoot.
21:52But pride in my filmmaking craft means I'm taking this deadly serious.
21:56We're going to show the very smooth and stable shots for like a car commercial film.
22:04Here comes our hero cars.
22:07JD.
22:09Stay there.
22:10And so put the cars in the center of the frame.
22:14Okay.
22:19Getting a movie quality shot is a huge team effort.
22:22Stun drivers exactly position their cars.
22:26I'll give you a distance.
22:28Jungwen and the crane operator work in tandem to position the camera.
22:33And I have to frame and focus the shots.
22:38Roll camera.
22:40I'm going to try switching lanes.
22:42Okay.
22:44Changing.
22:45Three, two, one.
22:53You're a little bit late.
22:55Yeah.
22:56But it's okay.
22:57This is your first time.
23:02We want to see a shot that we've never seen before, right?
23:05It's all kind of dancing with the drivers.
23:07But then how do you bring emotion into just the cars?
23:10Because we have no cutaways here.
23:12You can't cut away to the actor and go, oh, we're stopping.
23:15Oh, we're going so fast.
23:19Roll camera.
23:21So, trying to keep the focus on the inside of the corners.
23:26Good.
23:29No.
23:30Okay.
23:31You missed it.
23:33That's so difficult.
23:34Yes.
23:39One more try.
23:41Chin roll.
23:45More distance.
23:50And approaching.
23:54Focus, focus.
23:54Okay.
23:57Ooh, that looks smart.
23:59Dynamic.
24:00It feels like we're going faster, huh?
24:03It's nice to have these leaves come in, too.
24:06Yeah.
24:07It's given by nature.
24:09Oh, look at the lens flare.
24:11Whoa!
24:11Oh, yes.
24:15There's, like, emotion.
24:16Right.
24:20So, it's bringing the cars to life.
24:23Giving the cars a voice.
24:26Soul.
24:26And if you can try to cheat it, because the camera doesn't lie.
24:31The life is perfect.
24:32Oh, you feel it.
24:40Yes.
24:41That was nice.
24:42Nice feeling.
24:42That was nice.
24:43Yes.
24:45Okay.
24:46Let's check.
24:47It's pretty sharp.
24:59Look at that.
25:04Yes, I love it.
25:26I got it.
25:27Okay.
25:31What an honor it's been to work with someone who's followed his heart and turned that into a success.
25:38The rest of the world might think that there's no car culture here.
25:41But with people like Jeon-Wen and his team, they'll make sure that Korea is seen and heard.
25:46I had a lot of fun.
25:48I learned a lot.
25:50I got some presents for you.
25:53This is my next race.
25:55Check this out.
25:56Wow.
25:57Wow, this is a rotary from the Mazda.
26:01RX-7 that I drive in Tokyo.
26:03Yeah.
26:07As it happens, I do need to look my best today.
26:19I'm on my way to visit my mom.
26:22Yeah.
26:23There's a lot to unpack between me and my mom.
26:27There's a lot to unpack between me and my mom.
26:32Always, you know, mother and son issues.
26:34You have to get over as you get older, so some of the conversations might be a little difficult at moments.
26:39Truth is, I went through many dark times in my childhood, and I guess I blame my mom for much of what went down.
26:58That's why we rarely speak and haven't seen each other in 10 years.
27:05Okay, thank you.
27:07I'd like us to have a closer relationship.
27:20So for the first time, I'm going to try to grow a connection with my mom through cars.
27:47my mom has never shown a interest in cars so I'm starting our night with
27:53something I know she'll like this place is typical of cheap and cheerful Korean
28:02style fast food so this is the pokey it's like a mochi rice cake with fish
28:10cakes spicy this is what like all kids love to eat as well mom moved back to
28:17Korea when I was still in my teens and that's something I never understood or
28:21accepted

30:53Do you have a lot of cars?
30:57I have a lot of cars.
30:59I have like 14 cars.
31:0214 cars?

31:14I'm a salesman.
31:17When we go to this place, let's see what car you like.
31:22Okay.
31:23My dream car.
31:29By day, Seoul's roads are a sea of silver and gray new model vehicles from Korea's big brands.
31:36But after dark, there's a chance to encounter exotic and modified cars and meets like this near the Han River.
31:43Hey, welcome to Mapo.
31:44Hey.
31:45Hey, who's this young lady right here?
31:47Yeah.
31:48Yeah, Richard Kim.
31:50Oh, Richard Kim.
31:51Yeah, yeah.
31:52Richard is Korean but has lived in the U.S.
31:56He's one of a bunch of car owners here from a nearby U.S. military base.
32:01Many of the cars here were imported using a special U.S. military exemption and are not accessible to Koreans.
32:14There is a car scene in Korea, but you have to know Korean to kind of find out where everything is at.
32:29Oh, yeah.
32:30Oh, yeah.
32:31Oh, yeah.
32:32Oh, yeah.
32:33So pattern is like a dog.
32:34If you have a car or a car.
32:37Oh, yeah, you are just like sitting in the car.
32:39We'll start walking, sit, walking, drinking and we'll take coffee.
32:41Oh, like a car and it's like a car, but it's like a car.
32:42Ah, you know what it's like for a year, an hour.
32:43No, no, just it all takes time.
32:44You really get to know?
32:45Yeah.

34:16it's a 98
34:17it's a 98
34:22it's a 98 but the design is from like a long time ago
34:27they really didn't change it for a long time
34:29very nice

35:04I like it.
35:05Beautiful, everybody's family.
35:10It's really cool to share this moment with her.
35:12At first I thought she was going to be kind of uncomfortable or get really bored here,
35:17but she fits right in.
35:19in and it was great to see that for someone who doesn't even know much about cars and who's 75
35:25years old she's able to feel the energy absorb what the car community is all about
35:34thank you thank you for coming out thank you it's pretty amazing if this is
35:38recording car culture is currently it's just gonna grow and grow and grow
35:41it was a long drive this morning but it's totally worth it we're at the taehan driving experience
36:04it's about two and a half hours away from seoul look at this beautiful track
36:17state of the art
36:22it's my last day in korea and i'm grabbing the chance to see a car that could be inspiring
36:27enthusiasts for decades to come i look at that car man wow that is so beautiful
36:41it's like beautiful woman passing by you and your heart just starts to thump that's how i'm feeling
36:47the envision 74 is hyundai's very first hydrogen hybrid vehicle
37:08hi nice to meet you jason park and a crew from hyundai are introducing me to their prized creation
37:15the envision 74. this was actually inspired from the pony coupe which was revealed in 1974.
37:25designed by di giario correct
37:29i mean you see a lot of the back to the future delorean in this car yes correct
37:33and the fun fact is that the delorean was actually inspired from the pony coupe
37:49wow this is this is back to the future right here the envision 74 is essentially an electric
37:55vehicle with its own hydrogen power station why hydrogen innovation why did you guys choose that
38:01opposed to just purely ev we can generate the energy from hydrogen and instead of just adding a pack
38:07of batteries making the cars heavier we can keep the car lighter and have more endurance on the
38:13racetrack as well at this stage fuel cell electric cars are more expensive than battery electric cars
38:20but if the infrastructure gets in place hydrogen would offer faster refueling longer range and can be
38:27free of harmful emissions just like battery cars
38:39yeah how do you open the door open
38:48watch your head
38:48wow beside me is co-pilot kang jae-young head of the envision 74 project
39:02and in the back 4.2 kilograms of hydrogen ready to recharge our battery on the run
39:07wow that sound is just feels like really like a futuristic rocket ship yeah
39:23i feel like i'm flying oh okay i'm stepping on the scene with my team show me
39:38flowing so high they gonna try to hit me
39:40wow that is so amazing oh my god
39:44hidden from view is hyundai's torque vectoring by twin motor system
39:52it allows for precise and independent left-right power distribution for optimal handling and performance
39:58on road or racetrack yeah yeah spaceship yeah without even trying we're soaring over 250 kilometers per hour
40:09wow
40:22wow if the back to the future car was a real car
40:34wow i think it would feel like this
40:38so you want to roll in a hyundai now yeah i do
40:42you know it speaks to the soul i think that's why this car is like so special
40:48we're trying to keep the daring spirit alive
40:52and now i guess it's time for us to become the leaders instead of the fast followers
40:57i love that car like this really represents where korea is today it's not it's just an emerging country
41:09trying to catch up they've arrived and seeing where we're gonna go next
41:14before i leave i'm soaking up some of the amazing history that led to the n vision 74
41:26at hyundai's motor studio this is the place
41:33wow this is history right here yeah wow
41:36it's awesome to have a place like this where you could come and you can absorb the history of
41:45what hyundai is imagine drifting
41:53it's important to be able to like have access and touch
41:56opposed to just seeing it on the internet
41:58when you have history in your hand yeah that's how you appreciate it right
42:03i never knew even what hyundai meant it's modern times i mean how fitting is it like when it's
42:08helped this country not only like move around right but it's also helped it become recognized
42:16and respected in modern times
42:23thank you thank you so much it's just been a beautiful day
42:28i came to korea thinking that there was no car culture or it was just
42:31beginning
42:34but i think i'm actually wrong it's been here but it's under the radar
42:41no amount of rules and red tape can contain a car culture
42:47but i also do believe that great things come from limitation it forces you to be more creative
42:55it forces you to break out of that box
42:58welcome to the crew thank you
43:01yeah thank you thank you
43:04the car community here is just the tonic i needed for inspiration and making sense of my korean heritage
43:12right away we can connect with talking about cars
43:16oh my god this is where i have fun oh yeah
43:22even my mom had a great time she finally got to see what cars mean to me
43:29but also most importantly it's the first time i feel like my mother and i connected on something
43:37at the end of the day at the end of the day that is enough for me
43:52you
43:54so
