Signing! Red Sox are making moves! Did Sox just get a true #2 starter? Boston gets Ranger Suarez on a 5-yr, $130M deal- Thoughts on rotation? Was this deal always in the plans? Pitching is strong- Are the Red Sox DONE?
Transcript
00:00Big news from the Boston Red Sox yesterday.
00:03Oh, yeah.
00:04Is that, did they get themselves, I'll ask the baseball guy,
00:07did they get themselves a legit number two starter yesterday, Curtis?
00:12Courtney? No.
00:13I would say that they did, but yesterday is the greatest example
00:18that this is not an organization with a plan.
00:23This is a team that reacts reflexively when they get beat up on the head
00:29about what they did with Bregman.
00:31Just like the offseason where they didn't call Schwarber back,
00:35randomly they signed Trevor Story to six years and $120 million
00:39right as everybody was arriving for spring training.
00:43I love pitching. It's great.
00:44I think it's going to help the team, but it's just such a,
00:49it was just reactionary to me.
00:50It wasn't a need.
00:52It helps something that's a strength, which is good,
00:54but your need is power bats, specifically a power right-handed bat.
00:59I'd agree with your power bat is definitely a need,
01:02but this was still, this is probably your second greatest need
01:05after your power bat, right?
01:06Because we were like, who's your number two starter after Garrett Crochet?
01:09Yeah, I mean, your rotation looks really, really good.
01:13Yes.
01:14And so if you look at Garrett Crochet and then you look at Suarez as your number two
01:22and you added Sonny Gray, and so at least when it comes to that,
01:28you can check that box off and you look really, really good.
01:31The question becomes, are you, what else are you doing?
01:35And you're going to have to do it via trade, I'm guessing.
01:40And then what are you willing to part with when it comes to your prospects
01:45or to an outfielder or whatever it is that you're willing to do
01:50to get a deal done, to get a bat, if you believe.
01:53If you believe that they may be done.
01:55I mean, maybe that's their, maybe that's the splash.
01:58I don't think they're done.
02:00I mean, because you brought this up yesterday,
02:01and it probably is not realistic, but it could be something like,
02:07you know, Curtis said reactionary, maybe there's a Boba Shett deal potentially,
02:12but if not, maybe it is a trade.
02:14But I would.
02:16It could happen, Curtis.
02:18Really?
02:19What do you guys want to bet?
02:21They gave this guy 130 over five years for a pitcher.
02:24130 million.
02:25So it's pretty good annually for what he'll be making.
02:27I think the question becomes, right now you're still,
02:31your lineup isn't as good as it was at, you know, the end of the season.
02:35You're the third best team in the American League East.
02:36Right, your lineup.
02:37But your pitching is probably top of the, you know,
02:41top of the American League East, right?
02:44So when you look at that.
02:45Do they have a better rotation than the Yankees?
02:49I would say with Crochet and this guy.
02:51I saw Joe Weil put out like a war chart and you're number one over the Dodgers.
02:57Oh, I love the war stat.
03:01Sean, can we get into that later?
03:03Sure, definitely, yeah.
03:04I'll send the graphic to Mitch.
03:05You can even look at the chart yourself, Greg.
03:08Break it down column by column.
03:10I have details briefly on the incident when it comes to your drive to work this morning.
03:17And it appears that that jackknife tractor trailer is on the off-ramp to 128 from the Pike in the Weston area.
03:29So I would recommend that you avoid that at all costs if you can this morning.
03:35So Red Sox make a move and you can talk about that on the show this morning.
03:41The best part about it, just to put a bow in it, is that they didn't have to trade.
03:44Like if they got Joe Ryan, the prospects that you would need to bring in a bat would be gone.
03:49So signing this pitcher with just money allows the Red Sox to utilize whatever the guys they would have traded for for Joe Ryan to hopefully bring in someone that can be a power bat.
03:59Yeah, that's a good point.
04:02That's a really good point.
04:03And I think when you look at, and we've talked to, and maybe in the world of Major League Baseball, it seems like every people we talk to, whether it's Craig Breslow or Sam Kennedy or Heinblum before that, it's like pitching wins in the postseason.
04:18So pitching wins in the postseason, and part of maybe why you lost this postseason was because your pitching, other than Crochet, was like, all right, what are we going to do?
04:30And so now you put yourself in a great position that when it comes to the postseason, that you know what the top of your rotation looks like.
04:38Yeah, you were relying, other than Crochet, on guys who had been brought up very recently in time.
04:46So, yeah, big night for Big Z.
04:51Zdeno Chara's number 33 will be raised to the rafters tonight at the Boston Garden, and the Bruins are recommending that you are in your seat by 6.10 this evening.
05:03So, certainly worthy.
05:05Yesterday on this show, Chris Curtis suggested that that may have been the single best free agent signing in the history of our region, Curtis.
05:17Not Rushmore.
05:17One of the best.
05:18Okay, one of the best.
05:19Yeah.
05:20I think we landed on Manny too late.
05:22Manny is the best free agent signing in the history of Boston.
05:25Okay.
05:25But, I mean, I also want to give it to the Jacobs, 6.10 in your seat, so they get an extra 50 minutes of concession sales before they raise the freaking number.
05:34That is, like, whatever.
05:36But, yeah, Zdeno Chara, what he did, what he represented, I mean, it's hard to overstate the change he made and where the Bruins were in the early 2000s and where they are today and where he brought them.
05:49Well, and by adding him, you completely changed your trajectory and you got 14 years of being in it.
05:58Right.
05:58Right.
