00:00:00Oh, look at that!
00:00:02Oh, look at that!
00:00:03Absolutely phenomenal!
00:00:05Really awesome!
00:00:07Welcome to Match of the Dead.
00:00:30On the weekend, the nation remembers those who lost their lives while serving their country.
00:00:54Football paid its respects.
00:01:00Oh, look at that!
00:01:03I love that!
00:01:05I love it!
00:01:08Ok, now I'm here to record.
00:01:11I'm here to record!
00:01:12I was so happy and mowed on the end of the maine.
00:01:17I can't get it!
00:01:19I'm the host of all the folks of Washington D.
00:03:29Not a clash of heads.
00:03:30Ballard won it cleanly.
00:03:33His arm went into the right-hand side of Marino's cheek there.
00:03:37Nothing wrong with the challenge.
00:03:39The arm's got to go up for balance.
00:03:45Regis Labriz has called it pretty simply in his pre-match words.
00:03:49We have to do a masterclass.
00:03:51No choice.
00:03:53Reis.
00:03:59Ballard heads out.
00:04:00Le Fay.
00:04:01Time to bring it down but he's given it away to Eza now.
00:04:03And Eza's cleared the crossbar.
00:04:05Sunderland can't give Arsenal presence.
00:04:09They will make the most of one before long.
00:04:13Left Siddiqui wrong-footed.
00:04:15I would think given that opportunity again, Eza would opt for something a bit more powerful.
00:04:20Eza holds off Xhaka but then Kuhn gets his foot to the ball.
00:04:27Timber against Le Fay.
00:04:29Le Fay on the floor.
00:04:30And Isidore trying to break round the back.
00:04:32Fires wide but it was a, well if not a half chance, a third of a chance perhaps.
00:04:38Isidore never really had the angle but he certainly has the confidence.
00:04:46Timber.
00:04:48Zaka.
00:04:49They started to get more and more involved.
00:04:54Eza.
00:04:55And takes a barge from Xhaka and complains about it.
00:05:00As did Arteta.
00:05:01And there'll be more complaining now because the free kick's gone against his team.
00:05:05Not only that, Zubi Mendy is the first player to get a booking.
00:05:09Came clattering into Isidore.
00:05:13Roofs to play it up towards Ballard.
00:05:23Ballard's there again.
00:05:25And Ballard shoots into the roof of the net.
00:05:28And he's got this pace jumping.
00:05:29Arsenal can see the goal for the first time in nine games.
00:05:41And it's one of their own who scored it.
00:05:44Dan Ballard started out as an Arsenal junior.
00:05:47Didn't make the breakthrough.
00:05:49He has here tonight.
00:05:51Sunderland won Arsenal nil.
00:05:53Regis Lebris game plan is working.
00:05:56Get into Arsenal faces.
00:05:58Rough them up a bit and upset them.
00:06:00They're really upset now.
00:06:02One thing for sure, this Arsenal team has steel and they won't lie down.
00:06:09Tross up.
00:06:11Saka's calling for it.
00:06:16Tross up's ignoring his captain.
00:06:19Zubi Mendy, he finds Saka.
00:06:21And Saka plays it across the base.
00:06:24But that was promising for Arsenal.
00:06:27It hasn't happened too often at all today.
00:06:30But on that occasion, they were playing it nicely through and finding the spaces in the penalty area.
00:06:36Lefe.
00:06:38Rice is on him.
00:06:41And Rice wins the ball.
00:06:44Eze.
00:06:45Mourinho, Tross up's arriving.
00:06:47Here's Saka, first on the scene.
00:06:49And Saka squeezes it in.
00:06:51Arsenal level.
00:06:55It's been coming since the start of the second half.
00:07:01Enzo Lefe, not the first to be guilty of dallying in possession in his own half.
00:07:07But he's the first to be made to pay for it.
00:07:09Great work by Declan Rice.
00:07:11We expect that from him.
00:07:12And we expect this from Bakayo Saka.
00:07:15Sunderland one, Arsenal one.
00:07:20Rice.
00:07:25Tross up.
00:07:28And Fiore trying to take Trey Hume away.
00:07:30Nice ball in for Zubi Mendy.
00:07:34Chance after Arsenal, chance coming now.
00:07:36Through the legs of Bertrand Traore.
00:07:39Zubi Mendy perfectly aware of his whereabouts there.
00:07:43Knew he had to take it first time.
00:07:46Rice.
00:07:52Saka.
00:07:53Roofs punches but straight to Zubi Mendy.
00:07:56Here's Eze now.
00:07:58The bars only just stop shaking from Zubi Mendy's effort.
00:08:03Not decisive Robin Roofs.
00:08:05Really good effort from Zubi Mendy.
00:08:07Arsenal getting closer and closer all the time.
00:08:11Tross up.
00:08:12Space opens up for Trossard now.
00:08:13Oh, that is fantastic.
00:08:14What a goal by Leandro Trossard to give Arsenal the lead.
00:08:18Just managed to move the ball sufficiently far away from Noah Siddiqui to set himself up.
00:08:25But he still had an awful lot to do from that point.
00:08:26It has still got to be a perfect shot to get past Robin Roofs from that range.
00:08:38It is perfect.
00:08:39And it's Sunderland 1, Arsenal 2.
00:08:40Robby.
00:08:41Calafiori.
00:08:42Had a fly kick at it.
00:08:43Missed it.
00:08:44Took Hume to the floor.
00:08:45And he gives Sunderland a free kick.
00:08:47A perfect shot to get past Robin Roos from that range.
00:08:51It is perfect.
00:08:53And it's Sunderland 1, Arsenal 2.
00:08:58Robby.
00:09:00Calafiore had a fly kick at it, missed it.
00:09:04Took Hume to the floor.
00:09:06And it gives Sunderland a free kick.
00:09:11It's Hume.
00:09:12It's a really good delivery.
00:09:15Oh, a ding-rap.
00:09:17Gets to the ball.
00:09:18Mucchielli was in his way a fraction of a second too long.
00:09:22And now it's out.
00:09:23Where's it going to be?
00:09:23It's Sunderland's throwing.
00:09:27Ballard, he didn't help it on.
00:09:28Oh, it nearly came to Robby.
00:09:29It has now.
00:09:30And Raya's made the save.
00:09:32With assistance from Marino and now with assistance from the flag.
00:09:37It's actually helped on by William Saliba.
00:09:40Spooned by Raya who had a second grab at it.
00:09:43It looked at that point as though Robby would score.
00:09:45But that's a really good save by Raya.
00:09:48Mucchielli.
00:09:51Putting away to Rice.
00:09:52But it bounced off him to Xhaka.
00:09:54Hume.
00:09:55It's over Robby.
00:09:56Arriving is Ranildo.
00:09:57And Raya gets to the ball just before Brian Robby.
00:10:01Brilliant goalkeeping.
00:10:03I think that might have been given as a foul anyway.
00:10:06And it's Ranildo.
00:10:07Went hurtling into the back of William Saliba.
00:10:11Siddiqui.
00:10:14Siddiqui.
00:10:17Xhaka.
00:10:21Only about 15 players in between him and the goal.
00:10:25Hume.
00:10:27Ballard trying to help it on to Robby.
00:10:28And Robby's hooked in home.
00:10:39His first Sunderland goal.
00:10:42And it looks as though it's rescued them a point against the Premier League leaders.
00:10:47Arsenal have issues with it.
00:10:52It will of course be checked.
00:10:54Didn't look as though there was a foul from Ballard.
00:10:57Didn't look as though there was a foul from Robby.
00:11:00It's a super finish from Brian Robby.
00:11:05It's 2-2 at the Stadium of Light.
00:11:07That's an awkward cross.
00:11:20Marino's effort is smothered.
00:11:23Dan Ballard started the day.
00:11:25I think he might have just ended it.
00:11:27What a save this is.
00:11:29From the Sunderland centre-back.
00:11:32That sums him up.
00:11:33That sums them up.
00:11:34In any moment they just need a foul, a long throw, a direct ball.
00:11:39To create that chaos you have to defend the action as well.
00:11:42We lose the timing of that and we can see the goal.
00:11:45Very disappointed because even at the end of the last minute
00:11:48we have again a massive chance with Rikki and Mikkel to win it.
00:11:52It didn't mean to be.
00:11:54So we have to accept it.
00:11:56Difficult game, difficult environment to play.
00:11:59I feel like we've done extremely well.
00:12:00Especially in the second half to come back and to put in the performance we put in.
00:12:04But yeah, we'll go into the international break, top of the league and we'll keep a bit of perspective.
00:12:09Did the block at the end mean as much if not more than the goal you scored?
00:12:13The stage of the game, I mean, if we conceded there it would have been a huge blow.
00:12:17So it probably meant more in the end.
00:12:20But there's no fear in that, scoring a goal.
00:12:22It was a tough game as expected because we knew before that we faced probably one of the best teams in Europe.
00:12:30I think now we have this faith, this belief that until the final whistle anything is possible.
00:12:39And Sunderland have shown all season that anything is possible.
00:12:44They could have gone second if they'd won this game.
00:12:46They're unbeaten at home.
00:12:48What was so impressive about this performance against Arsenal, Alan?
00:12:51Well, particularly Dan Ballard.
00:12:53I think he epitomised everything that Sunderland have done so well.
00:12:57Particularly at home this season with his aggression.
00:12:59with him and his teammates stopping Arsenal playing, particularly in that first half.
00:13:05And they are really, really tough to play against.
00:13:08And there were so many examples of that today with him and other players putting their body on the line,
00:13:15you know, for their team and for the atmosphere.
00:13:19And I said, he sort of summed everything up.
00:13:22We're going to talk about this after.
00:13:24But look how difficult it is to get through.
00:13:27How many players they've got behind the ball.
00:13:29And then I think that's really good defending.
00:13:31As I said, we'll talk more in a minute about that.
00:13:33But that is really, really tough, aggressive defending.
00:13:37Then he more than plays his part with this.
00:13:39I mean, he makes it difficult to clear.
00:13:41But have a look at the touch and the finish.
00:13:43Goodness me.
00:13:43Any forward would be proud of that finish.
00:13:47Then when they're piling the pressure on, he makes it really difficult there.
00:13:51The flick on.
00:13:53In for Brian Broby, who then finishes off with a great finish.
00:13:56But it starts with him being aggressive in the box
00:13:58and not letting the Arsenal players defend the way they want to.
00:14:01And then they get the reward.
00:14:03And then Arsenal come back at them and they're straight down the other end.
00:14:07And I said, putting your body on the line for your team.
00:14:09That's exactly what I mean.
00:14:12And that's why it means so much to him as the defender to stop in that.
00:14:17And you can see the reaction from all the fans from behind the goal.
00:14:22And Arsenal will not have many tougher games than that this season.
00:14:25I promise you.
00:14:26And you can see.
00:14:27He started his career at the Arsenal Academy.
00:14:30And what a performance.
00:14:31Him and Sunderland put in today.
00:14:32I thought they thoroughly deserved the point.
00:14:34Yeah, Dan Ballard, player of the match.
00:14:36But you mentioned that challenge on Marino.
00:14:39They looked at it.
00:14:40VAR looked at it and decided there was nothing to see there.
00:14:43What was your view on it, Theo?
00:14:46Well, my view, I look at it a little bit differently, to be honest.
00:14:48And it's not clear and obvious.
00:14:50However, it's early in the game.
00:14:52It's seven minutes in the game.
00:14:53And Dan Ballard, of course, wants to put his mark on the game,
00:14:57should we just call it.
00:14:57And Mikel Arteta spoke about being disruptive.
00:15:01And he's definitely, from my opinion, right, he's disruptive.
00:15:03And there's a slight movement from the elbow to Marino's cheekbone.
00:15:08Me and Al, I definitely probably don't agree on it.
00:15:10However, I do feel like his elbow is in quite a high condition,
00:15:14should we just call it.
00:15:14And it was very disruptive.
00:15:15And it did set the balance.
00:15:16I think, as a defender, if he allows that forward to get across him,
00:15:21Marino, his manager, goes absolutely berserk at him.
00:15:24That's his space, and he cannot allow any forward to get across him.
00:15:28So he then settles himself, and then he goes for the header.
00:15:32He can't jump without doing that for a header.
00:15:34And I don't think there's anything deliberate there at all.
00:15:36I think it's more brilliant defending than anything else.
00:15:39And you would have done that if you were challenging for the ball as a striker.
00:15:41Well, I just wouldn't allow anyone to sort of get in me,
00:15:44in and around me, or in front of me.
00:15:46And that's his job as a defender.
00:15:47He cannot allow the forward to get in front of him.
00:15:50And he didn't.
00:15:50Theo, as Alan was saying earlier,
00:15:52Sunderland's game plan worked perfectly,
00:15:54particularly in the first half.
00:15:56But what changed for us on the second half?
00:15:59What changed?
00:15:59Mikel Arteta got into the dressing room, first of all.
00:16:01First before the players.
00:16:03And the intensity was the biggest challenge that they had to face,
00:16:07because they were up against a very tough Sunderland team
00:16:09who hadn't been beaten at home this year.
00:16:11And the numbers they committed forward as well,
00:16:14at times, because Saka was finding it hard in the first half
00:16:16to get involved in the game.
00:16:17But this is what I'm talking about,
00:16:18the bravery of committing bodies forward.
00:16:20And Declan Rice always starts to press.
00:16:23And if you give Arsenal an opportunity,
00:16:25they're going to punish you.
00:16:26Simple as that.
00:16:27And you can't afford to do that,
00:16:28because Sunderland worked tremendously hard.
00:16:29You know, I spoke, you know, a couple of weeks ago
00:16:31about the full-backs committing forward
00:16:33and putting in positions where you don't really expect.
00:16:36But this is what we're talking about,
00:16:37the difference, the bravery,
00:16:38the committing the bodies forward,
00:16:39like I said before.
00:16:39And this is where I felt at times
00:16:42Arsenal were always going to cause problems
00:16:45and make chances out of nothing.
00:16:47I'd say a little bit of a snapshot here,
00:16:49but this was the danger.
00:16:50This is the warning signs that Sunderland had to be aware of.
00:16:52Zubermendi, I felt, was absolutely brilliant in the second half.
00:16:56Just a bit unlucky here, of course.
00:16:58But this is the luck that Arsenal probably get in this season
00:17:01because they don't give up.
00:17:03They don't give you many opportunities.
00:17:04And Lionel Trossard, for me, is a player that
00:17:08is probably at times, you know, there's been questions,
00:17:11but you can just see here,
00:17:13Siddiqui points to Hulme to say,
00:17:15look, you take him,
00:17:16but I don't understand why you would then step
00:17:18and give that opportunity, that space to Trossard,
00:17:20particularly coming on the inside.
00:17:21And you can see how disappointed he is.
00:17:22It's a fantastic finish.
00:17:24Not taking a finish away, but look,
00:17:26Lionel Trossard's come up with very, very important goals
00:17:28right now for Arsenal Football Club.
00:17:29And I think it's a really good point in the end, to be honest.
00:17:32When I look at it, it's a balanced game.
00:17:33I think Sunderland probably deserves something out of the game,
00:17:35but Arsenal as well.
00:17:36Alan, they'll be looking at Manchester City-Liverpool
00:17:38tomorrow on Match of the Day.
00:17:40What difference does that Arsenal result make to that game?
00:17:43No, I agree with Theo.
00:17:45I think in the grand scheme of things,
00:17:47the way it was today and how tough it is for teams
00:17:50going to Sunderland, I think a point's a decent result.
00:17:53And they'll be hoping that those two draw tomorrow.
00:17:57Now, Manchester United are unbeaten
00:17:59in their last four in the Premier League.
00:18:01Ruben Amorim's joint best run since taking over.
00:18:04They travel to Spurs, and Steve Wilson watched this one.
00:18:09Spurs in the top six of the Premier League,
00:18:11unbeaten in the Champions League,
00:18:13a trophy in the cabinet, and yet,
00:18:16and yet home is where the hurt is for Tottenham,
00:18:19who've won just three of their last 19 league games here.
00:18:23Spurs fans are still buzzing about
00:18:25Nicky van der Benz midweek won the goal in Europe.
00:18:28He scored twice as many as Richarlison this season.
00:18:30No Europe for United, of course.
00:18:32They lost four times to Tottenham last term,
00:18:35including Europa League final.
00:18:37A start for Masraoui.
00:18:38Szefko drops to the bench.
00:18:39Europa League final they served up in Bilbao
00:18:45was really a save-our-season match for both.
00:18:47But the manager who won it lost his job.
00:18:50The manager who lost it didn't.
00:18:51And Charleston took it away from his countrymen.
00:18:55Javi Simon skipping forward with real purpose here.
00:18:58That's unlucky.
00:18:59It's a slip, but it's taken up by Colomuani.
00:19:02Blocked by De Ligt.
00:19:04Casemiro.
00:19:06And Bruno Fernandes and United have a counter-attack here of some promise.
00:19:13Cunha.
00:19:15Getting through Romero.
00:19:16Taken up by Bruno Fernandes.
00:19:18And Bermont in behind Pedro Porro.
00:19:20Well, he had every right to think that somebody would be there,
00:19:23but they weren't.
00:19:25The flag has gone up anyway as it happens.
00:19:28Four forward for United.
00:19:29Spurs desperately trying to get bodies back.
00:19:31That is super close.
00:19:34If that ended up in the back of the net,
00:19:36it would have been a long old VAR check.
00:19:43Nice little dummy by Brian and Bermont.
00:19:46Bruno Fernandes in behind.
00:19:47Looking for Matias Cunha.
00:19:49And Bermont heads for the area.
00:19:50Bruno Fernandes there too.
00:19:52And the momentary position of interest is not quite snuffed out.
00:19:56Cunha's back here.
00:19:57Dog is crossed.
00:19:58And Bermont's header.
00:19:59Jed Spence with Amart.
00:20:02Masraoui.
00:20:06Amart's cross.
00:20:08And in!
00:20:10Brian and Bermont scores.
00:20:11For Manchester United.
00:20:13For Manchester United.
00:20:15Again, he is in a rich vein of form.
00:20:20Scored to downfield.
00:20:22Scored two at home to Brighton.
00:20:24And scores at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
00:20:27Brian and Bermont.
00:20:28And that is far too easy.
00:20:32And Bermont just standing there.
00:20:33And no one gets close.
00:20:35It's a very poor goal to concede.
00:20:38Manchester United won't care and are in front.
00:20:41It looks like Tottenham have actually gone to a back three with Johnson as a right wing back and Spence as a left wing back.
00:20:53Johnson.
00:20:54Pedro Poro's ball in.
00:20:56It's a glance to Jaupalinha.
00:20:58Never quite had it under control.
00:21:01Blocked by Masraoui.
00:21:03Spurs will have a throw in.
00:21:11Here's Jed Spence.
00:21:13Olderbet.
00:21:15That's a better ball in!
00:21:17It's a really good save by Lammans.
00:21:19It's Tottenham's first attempt on target in the game.
00:21:24And Christian Romero is denied.
00:21:27Good stop by Senna Lammans because it's a very close port as this.
00:21:33Simons.
00:21:38Mathias Cunha.
00:21:40Simons has won that well.
00:21:42He's being fouled by Mathias Cunha.
00:21:44It's a free kick.
00:21:45Must have been quite close to a yellow card, that actually, for Mathias Cunha, but I think he's got away with it.
00:21:55Pedro Poro for Spence.
00:21:58Looking for Romero in the crowd.
00:22:00It's Jaupalinha.
00:22:01Lammans there again.
00:22:02Well, the early impressions of Senna Lammans in her Manchester United jersey have been pretty good.
00:22:10That's another smart save.
00:22:12Might have seen that late.
00:22:13It's going right through the legs of Harry Maguire.
00:22:19Xavi Simons is being withdrawn, and that is not a popular decision with the Tottenham fans.
00:22:25Not at all.
00:22:27Mathias Tell comes on.
00:22:30Xavi Simons makes way.
00:22:31Bruno Fernandes.
00:22:38Odebeck.
00:22:46Udogi.
00:22:48And Tell!
00:22:50It's in!
00:22:53Tottenham Hotspur are level with seven minutes to go.
00:22:57Mattias Tell with a goal for Spurs.
00:23:01I'm pretty certain there's a deflection on this, which helped it pass Lammans.
00:23:08Tell with a neat turn.
00:23:10And it's flicked off the toe, actually, of De Ligt and into the roof of the net.
00:23:17The bit of luck that Tottenham badly required.
00:23:20And it's one-all in a game which, frankly, neither side really deserves to win.
00:23:25Seshko's flick on Mason Mount here for Manchester United.
00:23:32And the little ball into Benjamin Seshko!
00:23:35And a great sliding Van de Ven intervention keeps Tottenham level.
00:23:40Seshko is injured here.
00:23:41Well, this is what happened.
00:23:42Van de Ven brilliant.
00:23:43They're not going to be able to replace it.
00:23:44They've made five substitutions, Manchester United.
00:23:45Unless...
00:23:46Ceshko can recover.
00:23:47But it doesn't look like they're going to take that risk.
00:23:48No, he's not going to come back.
00:23:50So, it's one each.
00:23:52Manchester United are a man short.
00:23:53It's going to be a minimum of six added minutes.
00:23:54Spend it up.
00:23:55Well, this is what happened.
00:23:56Well, this is what happened.
00:23:57Van de Ven brilliant.
00:23:58They're not going to be able to replace it.
00:23:59They've made five substitutions, Manchester United.
00:24:00Unless...
00:24:01Ceshko can recover, but it doesn't look like they're going to take that risk.
00:24:03No, he's not going to come back.
00:24:06So, it's one each.
00:24:08Manchester United are a man short.
00:24:11It's going to be a minimum of six added minutes.
00:24:15Spence with the cross to lick behind.
00:24:17Tottenham corner.
00:24:26In goes the corner kick.
00:24:27Glanced away.
00:24:28Odderberg.
00:24:30And in!
00:24:31Off Richarlison's head!
00:24:38That is some turnaround.
00:24:40There's been almost no point in this game that you could have imagined Tottenham would win it.
00:24:46But here we are in the 92nd minute and they're in front.
00:24:51Richarlison with what is very likely to be the winning goal.
00:24:57Well, Odderberg's effort is excellent.
00:24:59And Richarlison, I think, meant it.
00:25:02Tottenham two.
00:25:04Manchester United one.
00:25:05They did one.
00:25:07Well, their unbeaten sequence would seem to be coming to an end.
00:25:13Verma.
00:25:18It's deflected.
00:25:19And Manchester United will have a corner.
00:25:21And Lammans, the goalkeeper, is coming forward.
00:25:29In goes the United corner kick.
00:25:32And De Ligt puts it in the net!
00:25:35It's two each!
00:25:36Two each!
00:25:39Well, it's another terrible goal to concede from Tottenham's point of view.
00:25:43But Manchester United have got themselves on level terms.
00:25:48Mati Stiligt.
00:25:50Goodness me.
00:25:52Luke Shaw did a good job for him just blocking Bentancur.
00:25:55Which meant that De Ligt, from close quarters, had no one in attendance.
00:26:01And it's 2-2.
00:26:04Amerim is prowling.
00:26:06Manchester United's ten men, remember.
00:26:10And that is the final whistle.
00:26:13Almost impossibly high drama at the end.
00:26:16Very low quality before it.
00:26:18But it finishes two each.
00:26:20I think if you look at the game, it was there.
00:26:24The three points was there to take.
00:26:26You can felt the environment.
00:26:28We were comfortable in the game.
00:26:30I think we can be so much better and to understand what's happening in the game.
00:26:34But we fight in every adversity.
00:26:36We lost Terry Maguire.
00:26:39We lost Kazimir with pain.
00:26:41We lost Cesco.
00:26:43We suffered two goals and we managed to draw the game.
00:26:46And that is a good sign.
00:26:48Of course, it's not that I'm going away from here and not be disappointed when you're leading 2-1 with one minute to go.
00:26:54And you don't win.
00:26:56That will always be the case.
00:26:58To stay in the game.
00:27:00Do the right thing.
00:27:01Keep pushing.
00:27:02Because in games like this where two teams are neutralizing a little bit, you don't create so much.
00:27:08You know, that's natural.
00:27:10But how the boys kept fighting, kept doing the right thing, I think was hugely impressive.
00:27:15I will stay positive because the reaction in the second half was very, very good.
00:27:19We showed a great mentality.
00:27:20So, yeah, I'm very happy to score this goal and help my team and I think we need to stay positive on this game.
00:27:26They did improve as the game went on Tottenham, Theo.
00:27:31Did Thomas Frank get his substitutions right?
00:27:33Well, I don't think the Tottenham fans felt he got the substitutions right when he made them, to be honest.
00:27:37But what he did do was he created a...
00:27:41They were getting too predictable, I felt, Tottenham in the first half.
00:27:44And you can see here, first half compared to the second half where all the players on the right hand side were actually Manchester United were very strong.
00:27:52And the big part for that was Odubar.
00:27:54Odubar was absolutely outstanding when he came on.
00:27:57A player who has to be able to take risks and play with that freedom and the energy.
00:28:01And that's what you have to do as a substitution.
00:28:03You need to be able to commit bodies.
00:28:05But what I like about him, he likes to put the ball in when you have space.
00:28:08He likes to change his game and this is what I'm talking about, not being predictable.
00:28:10When you give players who are ball carriers in this amount of space, Manchester United start dropping.
00:28:16And Doggy was fantastic as well.
00:28:17All three substitutes who came on actually contributed.
00:28:20And Theo, just watch the finish, the spin.
00:28:23Gets a bit of luck with the deflection, however, it's the hard work that counts.
00:28:27Odubar again outside on the...
00:28:29Isolating Ahmad, who I felt defensively struggled when Maserari actually went off the field.
00:28:36I felt Odubar probably got hit into the game a lot more.
00:28:38And that created the corner.
00:28:41And Odubar comes out, of course, more space and just has to guide him for Charleston.
00:28:45But it's fantastic and it just shows trust the manager's process.
00:28:49I think that's one thing as fans when you watch games, you're always frustrated in the moment.
00:28:53However, look, they're there for a reason.
00:28:55Thomas Frank's a good manager and knows exactly what he's doing and he's made the right decision there.
00:28:59Having said that, on the flip side, not all of Manchester United's substitutions worked perfectly.
00:29:04Certainly one in particular, Alan.
00:29:05Yeah, Sheshko's struggled again.
00:29:07I mean, he's only scored twice in his 12 appearances.
00:29:11And he came on today with just over half an hour to go and had two really, really good chances and should have scored, to be honest.
00:29:19They worked really well, Man United, for him to get in there with a one and two touch.
00:29:23And that's a good ball in behind.
00:29:26Now, he's either got to get his shot away early or he's got to push that ball forward quicker.
00:29:31He's not going to get that amount of time in the Premier League to work it and try and get it back onto his right foot.
00:29:37This one's the bigger puzzle for me.
00:29:38I know he's struggling for confidence, but any centre forward knows you cannot allow the forward, the centre half, to come back at you.
00:29:47You've got to get across Van de Ven.
00:29:49So if Van de Ven's going to tackle him, he makes sure he fouls them.
00:29:52And you should also, by that time, have a picture in your head of where the keeper is and what you are wanting to do.
00:30:01And I don't think he has a clue what he wants to do, because I don't think he even knows Van de Ven is there and chasing him.
00:30:08So now he should be looking at the keeper, thinking, what am I going to do? Where am I going to go?
00:30:13And he wants to work it again.
00:30:14He's got to come across again.
00:30:15He's trying to work it onto his right foot.
00:30:18But as I said, he has to get across or take it onto his left foot to finish.
00:30:21There's not once he knows that Van de Ven is actually tracking him and chasing him and preparing to put a tackle in.
00:30:28He's got to get his shot away.
00:30:29I know, as I said, he's struggling with confidence, but it's a big must do better.
00:30:35And no one likes to see him coming off injured and we hope his knee is OK.
00:30:39But they are two chances that you'd expect at that level that someone has to put away.
00:30:44Thomas Frank was saying, obviously, you're going to be disappointed when you concede that late on in a game when you've been leading 2-1.
00:30:50But their home record, Tottenham, is so poor and has been since before Thomas Frank as well.
00:30:57When you look at the results since the start of 2025, they are bottom of that particular team.
00:31:03Well, I think what they have to get used to now under Thomas Frank is that teams are going to come to their stadium and they're going to sit and defend.
00:31:10And then they've got to try and find and work their way out.
00:31:12Whereas when Tottenham are going away from home, teams will attack them and that suits them better.
00:31:16As for Manchester United, injuries are going to be a problem continuing for them and there were more in today's game, Theo.
00:31:23Yeah, no, of course, but look, the international break always comes at a good time for certain clubs, but certainly right now it's coming at a good time for United.
00:31:29Yeah.
00:31:30Now, last weekend's win against Newcastle was West Ham's first since Nuno Espirito Santo took over and their first at home this season.
00:31:38Burnley with the visitors this time looking for back to back away wins.
00:31:42Your commentator, Jonathan Pearce.
00:31:43Despite last weekend's win over Newcastle, once again West Ham fans have staged a protest against the club hierarchy with a petition calling for David Sullivan and Karen Brady to step down, reportedly signed by more than 16,000 and the West Ham fan advisory board passing a vote of no confidence in the board.
00:32:03There were definite signs of improvement last week for Nuno Espirito Santo's side.
00:32:08They were looking for back to back wins for the first time since February and unsurprisingly, they're unchanged.
00:32:13Jared Bowen places 250th game for the club.
00:32:16Burnley make one change from the home defeat by Arsenal and revert to a back four by bringing in Loom Chonot and rotating Laurent to the bench.
00:32:23Burnley have won just two of the last 11 top right away games against West Ham.
00:32:29So the Omens favour the home side.
00:32:33But you never know with West Ham.
00:32:35Walker goes long.
00:32:38Look for Quilinchi Hartman.
00:32:40It's a good ball in the middle.
00:32:42Really well played that Burnley.
00:32:44Just too far ahead of Jan Fleming.
00:32:47From 15 yards inside their own half, they were inside the West Ham six yard box with two touches.
00:32:54Scott Parker, five years as a player here between his Newcastle and Tottenham days, won the Footballer of the Year award while he was here.
00:33:03And the England Player of the Year award as well.
00:33:05He had 129 games for West Ham.
00:33:09Hartman.
00:33:10Long up to Fleming who did well.
00:33:16Chonot.
00:33:17Little shook whoop.
00:33:21Nice cross in.
00:33:23Lovely header.
00:33:24Burnley are ahead.
00:33:25West Ham have seven defenders back in the box.
00:33:29And yet it was far too easy for Jan Fleming to head home his fourth of the season.
00:33:34Big question was Fleming onside.
00:33:36As he heads back.
00:33:38Chonot.
00:33:39Then rolls it wide to Uga Chukwu.
00:33:42This is a measured lovely bending cross.
00:33:44Straight onto his forehead.
00:33:46Good centre forwards header.
00:33:48They're checking though for offside.
00:33:50And my first thoughts are he looked offside in a builder.
00:33:55The goal is given.
00:33:56Burnley are ahead.
00:33:59West Ham's confidence very brittle.
00:34:02Burnley have been the better side.
00:34:05Bowen.
00:34:06Tricking his way through.
00:34:08And sneaking a shot at goal that nearly crept in.
00:34:11Deflected wide from Jarrod Bowen.
00:34:14Promising link up between Wilson and him.
00:34:17I thought for Burnley they hold on here until half time.
00:34:20Oh there's a header on goal.
00:34:23I think it was Kilman up from the back that was blocked.
00:34:26And they're looking for back to back away wins of course.
00:34:32Having triumphed at Wolves 3-2.
00:34:34But they're under pressure here now coming to the end of the first half.
00:34:38Opportunity to get the cross in here now through Juuff.
00:34:41Right footed towards that back post area.
00:34:43Pressure from Gilman.
00:34:44Walker gets it away.
00:34:50Walker was shouting at Florentino there who allowed the cross to come in.
00:34:55They want to take it very quickly.
00:34:57Somerville.
00:34:58It's in!
00:34:59Wilson!
00:35:02Burnley licked to a flag that hasn't come yet.
00:35:04And West Ham are level.
00:35:06And that is what he does.
00:35:09He poaches goals.
00:35:11Penalty box.
00:35:12Penalty up.
00:35:13Callum Wilson only a second since joining the club.
00:35:17How many of his 143 club career goals has he snuffled up like that?
00:35:22Gambling that the ball might come to it.
00:35:25Gambling that the ball might come to it.
00:35:26Gambling that the ball might come to it.
00:35:27Cullen.
00:35:28Point for Burnley.
00:35:29Point for Burnley.
00:35:30We'll give them 11 from 11 games.
00:35:32It's a really good return for the promoted side.
00:35:35They want more though.
00:35:36Guarantino.
00:35:37Anthony with the cross.
00:35:38Looking for Flemming.
00:35:39We've already seen what he can do in the air with his headed goal.
00:35:42Can he outlet the defence.
00:35:43This time can't allow crosses to come in like this.
00:35:44But only on the attack.
00:35:45Looking here for Breuer.
00:35:46He's there again.
00:35:47Amando Breuer into the penalty is strong.
00:35:48So too though was Juan Bissaka.
00:35:49Anthony has stayed down for Burnley.
00:35:51West Ham counter.
00:35:53on the attack, looking here for Breuer, he's there again, Armando Breuer into the penalty
00:36:01is strong, so too though was Juan Bissaka, Anthony has stayed down for Burnley, West Ham
00:36:14counter, and here's Somerville, nice ledger with the defender, left for the near post
00:36:20angle, this is an opportunity, he chose the wrong option really I think, Bowen wanted
00:36:26it in the middle, that's too tight an angle to beat the goalkeeper, Fernandes, and a good
00:36:35game for West Ham, purposeful, Somerville in their brightest spot perhaps, Fernandes into
00:36:41the middle, swissed away by Twan Xavier for a corner, the London Stadium roars, the Burnley
00:36:49fans away to the right hand side, hope their team can cling on, Somerville with the corner
00:36:58kick, comes down to Paqueta, placed and it's in, Zucic, West Ham had the lead, Burnley stood,
00:37:08looked, lift arms, looking for upside, it's a similar goal to West Ham's first in many ways,
00:37:1414 minutes to go, a precious moment for West Ham, the goalkeeper does not cover himself
00:37:21with distinction there, pushed out by Dubravka, straight onto the body of Socek, the protests
00:37:29have gone on, on the pitch it smiles now, Florentino, Cullen doesn't deserve to be on the losing
00:37:39side, Hannibal Mayberry, Walker, low cross in, came off Areola, managed to block it, was very
00:37:53nearly forced in by Florentino's touch, Areola spread himself well to make a really important
00:38:00save, lively ending to the game, Fernandes, hungry for the ball, good sign that, to Deba, to
00:38:14Igor, Socek.
00:38:20Ron Bissaka's out wide, goes for goal, keeper spilt it, it's in, Bowen steps for it, so
00:38:29too for West Ham United, did Karl Walker-Peters, and he's celebrating as if he got the final
00:38:35touch, and when the final whistle comes, West Ham will have won it, a third goal, to put
00:38:41the game beyond Burnley, and once again they'll have to look at the keeper, Martin Dubravka.
00:38:50Walker-Peters got there just ahead of his team mate, Bowen, to nudge home his first for
00:38:54the club, 3-1 for West Ham, for the second week running here.
00:39:07Played out wide.
00:39:08Need to get it into Broglie in the box, surely, Brun Larsson there, Socek's gone down
00:39:15for West Ham, hobbling a little bit, Annabelle's gone for goal, Areola's spilt it, and it's
00:39:21forced in by Cullen, and the former West Ham United youngster has breathed new life into
00:39:27the game, but I don't think they'll have enough time.
00:39:30Well, I don't think anyone could see a 3-2 scoreline early on in the game.
00:39:39That last glass, dramatic goal for Burnley, means nothing in the end.
00:39:43For West Ham, it's back-to-back wins for the first time since February.
00:39:46All smiles now, have they turned the corner?
00:39:49It was a big game. We knew the magnitude of it, and going behind wasn't ideal, but we
00:39:55showed last week we got good character once we had gone behind. We started sticking together
00:39:59as a group more, and we know we have to dig in, work harder for each other and become
00:40:03a team, and I feel like we've done that last week and we've built on it again this week.
00:40:07Unfortunately, again, we react to the goal that we can see. The reaction was good, but
00:40:12this is not the way that we want it, but again, I think we prove that we want to change things,
00:40:18we want to be strong characters in the pitch, and the boys, I think, slowly are giving these
00:40:23small steps towards what I think should be a team.
00:40:27Do you blame individuals? The goalkeeper's obviously going to come under scrutiny, or do
00:40:31you just take it as a team?
00:40:32Well, definitely, as individuals, keeper definitely not, but there's definitely individuals, and
00:40:36I think as a group as well, in terms of when we score the goal, there's definitely areas
00:40:40where we just, we turn the game into exactly what West Ham want it to be. They want it
00:40:44to be end-to-end, they want it to be a basketball match, and we turn it into that, when for
00:40:4830-odd minutes, we've just literally controlled every bit of them, nullified them in every way,
00:40:52and got our nose in front, and we fell away from that. Now, that's players on the pitch
00:40:57and understanding that, which we need to improve.
00:40:59That wasn't pretty today by any means, but it's something to go from.
00:41:03Tell you what wasn't pretty. I tried the Sochek goal celebration last
00:41:06Friday night, coming out of a pub at 11 o'clock. It ended very ugly, I can say. Don't try it.
00:41:11No, I have my own, but, yeah, if he keeps coming on, nicking goals like that for us,
00:41:16it's a massive help.
00:41:18And if you're watching, having been at the pub, please don't try that celebration at home.
00:41:22We need to say that, just to make sure everybody stays safe.
00:41:25Look, it was a game that took a little while to catch fire and struggle to at times, Alan,
00:41:30apart from one player in particular, Mateus Fernandes.
00:41:34Yeah, I thought he was outstanding, and the stats will tell you.
00:41:38He was, without doubt, I thought, the best player on the park.
00:41:41You're right, the standard wasn't great at times today, but he was the standout
00:41:46for the vast majority of the game.
00:41:47He was the one that was at least trying to drive his team forward.
00:41:51Whatever he did, I thought he did very well, whether that was attacking,
00:41:54playing balls in behind, doing his bit defensively, which, of course, he has to do.
00:41:59I thought he did that really, really well.
00:42:01And I thought he set a great example of what the West Ham fans want.
00:42:07Did really well in forward positions, whether that was little give-go,
00:42:10little balls around the corner, this one here, when he just gives,
00:42:13and then follows the pass in behind, and it's not a bad ball in either.
00:42:18So, yeah, he was the excellent player.
00:42:20But then they didn't really have that much of a threat,
00:42:23but I thought Suchek, when he came on, it was better,
00:42:28because he gives them something different.
00:42:30He gives them a threat in that box when balls are coming in.
00:42:34All right, they've got a little bit of a warning here.
00:42:36Fernandes, again, driving forward.
00:42:40Nothing comes of it other than, I say, a corner,
00:42:42and that's exactly what they want, and they actually score from the corner.
00:42:46But it's him, again, that's driving his team forward.
00:42:49I mean, Dubravka won't want to watch this again,
00:42:52because it's an absolute howler from him.
00:42:54But they didn't really have that threat, you know,
00:42:57with Callum Wilson, I know, but Suchek certainly changed that there.
00:43:01Ball goes into him, gets his goal, gets the assist as well.
00:43:04With that much space to run into, I don't care who you are,
00:43:07you're going to put the team under pressure,
00:43:08and that's what happened.
00:43:09And then Walker-Peters and Bowen are fighting over the ball.
00:43:12It doesn't matter who puts it in.
00:43:14It's just someone has to, and Walker-Peters did that.
00:43:17And that is a huge win for West Ham, back-to-back wins.
00:43:20You can see what it means to Nuno.
00:43:22The club say about 2,000 to 3,000 fans were protesting before the game about the board.
00:43:27In terms of what's happening on the pitch, Nuno said small steps.
00:43:31Can you start to see the progress?
00:43:33I mean, they've come from behind to win two weeks running now.
00:43:35Yeah, that's right.
00:43:36I think that would be the real positive.
00:43:38Going 1-0 behind last week to Newcastle, coming back and getting the points,
00:43:42doing exactly the same thing today.
00:43:43So I think in terms of he thinks, at least I've got a squad that's reacting to me,
00:43:47wants to work for me and fight for me.
00:43:49So they've shown their attitude, but I certainly understand their fans
00:43:52and they're doing the protest, absolutely,
00:43:55because at times West Ham haven't been good enough, and it's been a while.
00:43:59Now, there are five games in a bumper Sunday match of the day.
00:44:03He finishes yet another.
00:44:08It secures the points for the champions.
00:44:12Villa's swinging to the lead.
00:44:14That was very sweet indeed.
00:44:17It's a chance to go.
00:44:20Oh, that's brilliant.
00:44:22That was pinpoint stuff.
00:44:25That is a bang-in.
00:44:28You won't see a better header this weekend.
00:44:30And you can follow all those games on Five Live and BBC Sounds tomorrow.
00:44:42Premier League Sunday kicks off at 12.
00:44:45More live football on Wednesday night.
00:44:47Mary Earps returns to Manchester United with PSG
00:44:49and the Women's Champions League on BBC Three.
00:44:53Keep up with everything going on in the game with the Football Daily Podcast.
00:44:56That's every day on BBC Sounds.
00:44:59And if you missed the start of this show, it's available right now on iPlayer.
00:45:03And you can also find the goals from every Premier League match.
00:45:08Everton and Fulham were separated by just a single point coming into their game,
00:45:12with both sides struggling to score this season.
00:45:15Commentary comes from Connor McNamara.
00:45:17This is the first home game here since Everton lost at their new stadium
00:45:23for the very first time against Spurs two weeks ago.
00:45:28You have to go back to 2011 for the last time Everton lost back-to-back home games
00:45:33under David Moyes.
00:45:34There is one change from the draw at Sunderland last time out.
00:45:39Tim Iribunum comes into the midfield.
00:45:41James Garner moves back to right-back.
00:45:44And Jake O'Brien, who had started every Premier League game this season before today,
00:45:48drops to the bench.
00:45:50Fulham also make one change from their much-needed win against Wolves last weekend.
00:45:54Sasha Lukic comes in to replace Josh King.
00:45:57Alex Iwobi starts against his old club.
00:45:59Iwobi scored against Everton in this game last season.
00:46:05Last time Everton beat Fulham in a Premier League home game,
00:46:08Marco Silva was the Everton manager.
00:46:11That was all the way back in 2018.
00:46:13Barry, nicely done, chesting it down for Dewsbury Hall.
00:46:17Sasha Lukic leads in and gives away the free kick.
00:46:21Sasha Lukic, who has committed more fouls this season
00:46:24than any other player in the Premier League.
00:46:26And he picks up an early yellow card here today.
00:46:30Body language would suggest James Garner might even fancy this.
00:46:34Oh, he does.
00:46:35And it was on target too.
00:46:37Best save of the early stages from Bert Leno.
00:46:40Tell you what, that's really well struck, isn't it?
00:46:42Moving away from the goalkeeper.
00:46:44Too hot for Bert Leno to handle.
00:46:47Once a blue, always a blue.
00:46:49Wayne Rooney sitting behind Peter Reid.
00:46:55He's got very impressive headwear.
00:47:01Michael Keane beaten by Raul Jimenez.
00:47:03This is Alex Iwobi.
00:47:05Jimenez, shot on target, but comfortable for Pickford.
00:47:11Sun distribution by Jordan Pickford, the big ad, Jack Grealish.
00:47:15Up against Kelly Tete.
00:47:22Finds Dewsbury Hall.
00:47:25Pick in by Andrew Seguet.
00:47:27And it must be Tino Barry, but the flag is up.
00:47:31Everton are offside.
00:47:32Really nice build-up, you have to say.
00:47:37Ujai, who was in front of Bassey as the pass was played in.
00:47:41The on-field call is confirmed.
00:47:44Everton were offside.
00:47:48Jimenezbury Hall.
00:47:49Everton fans are doing their best to remind referee Andy Madley of that fact.
00:48:04Seguet's fortunate.
00:48:06Not to have seen a second yellow there.
00:48:08He's certainly on the tightrope now.
00:48:11This is Grealish.
00:48:12Sells the dummy to Wilson.
00:48:16Now he delivers.
00:48:19Just too high for Tarkovsky.
00:48:21In jive.
00:48:22Garner.
00:48:23Michael Keane.
00:48:25Saved by Leno.
00:48:26Tarkovsky!
00:48:27But the flag is up again!
00:48:30For the second time in this first half.
00:48:33An Everton goal is ruled out for offside.
00:48:36James Tarkovsky, who initially was in an offside position there, as Grealish sent it in.
00:48:44And the same player who wants to kick the ball into the back of the net, but the assistant pinging the offside for the earlier encroachment behind the Fulham defence.
00:48:56Grealish.
00:48:59Blocked by Wilson.
00:49:02Ero Butem, though, has kept it alive for Everton.
00:49:04This is Mikelenko.
00:49:05Leno backpedalling.
00:49:06And it's Tarkovsky.
00:49:08And Iro Butem couldn't follow up.
00:49:10But Andresa Gay does!
00:49:13And after two goals disallowed in this first half.
00:49:18Everton finally take the lead.
00:49:21It's stoppage time ahead of the break.
00:49:24It's his second Premier League goal of the season.
00:49:27Scored in the Merseyside derby in September.
00:49:30As persistence pays here for Everton.
00:49:33They kept plugging away Tarkovsky.
00:49:35Off the crossbar.
00:49:36Irribuna misfiring.
00:49:38But it was sure and it was true.
00:49:40From Andresa Gay.
00:49:42Everton one, Fulham nil.
00:49:45Tarkovsky picks out Josh King.
00:49:54Wilson.
00:49:57Looking for the angle.
00:49:58Harry Wilson.
00:49:59Oh, it takes a deflection.
00:50:00Oh, it takes a deflection.
00:50:00And it was looping over Pickford.
00:50:02And that's one of the more nervous moments for the England international keeper today.
00:50:08Early stages of the second half.
00:50:09Fulham have come out in a much more determined mood, it would seem.
00:50:12Mikulenko.
00:50:17Injai is at the back post.
00:50:21Dewsbury.
00:50:22Oh!
00:50:23Everton get their second.
00:50:24But the flag is up again.
00:50:26For the third time today.
00:50:29And Everton goal gets disallowed.
00:50:33Nick Hopton, the assistant, seemed to be mouthing the word Barry there.
00:50:38And it's Injai.
00:50:40Trying to pull it back here.
00:50:41At this moment there, Tino Barry is offside of the ball.
00:50:44Played towards him.
00:50:45He's certainly in an active position, challenging for the ball.
00:50:47Marcus Silva made one substitution at halftime.
00:50:53A little further to, but his team are not firing all cylinders today.
00:51:00Okay.
00:51:02Bernice.
00:51:03First chance for him since coming on.
00:51:05Good save for Pickford.
00:51:08That's exactly the sort of impact that Marcus Silva was hoping for bringing on Rodrigo Bernice.
00:51:14Immediately played into a shooting position.
00:51:17Good stop from Pickford.
00:51:19Good reaction.
00:51:25First chance for Beto since coming on.
00:51:27Bassey in hot pursuit.
00:51:32Merle.
00:51:35Well blocked again by Sessegnor.
00:51:37Sessegnor appealing with the last touch.
00:51:38Came off Merle and roll.
00:51:40The on-field decision here is corner.
00:51:44Fulham conceded a late 90th minute winning goal when they...
00:51:47Lost to Newcastle.
00:51:48The most recent Premier League away game.
00:51:51Marcus Silva will be hoping they don't concede late here.
00:51:54Keenan Dewsbury Hall sends it in.
00:51:55Michael Keane!
00:51:56And it's in!
00:51:57That's the second goal that Everton so desperately craved.
00:52:05And after three disallowed goals today, Everton now have two on the scoreboard that stand on his 350th league appearance on his career.
00:52:17Michael Keane makes it.
00:52:18Michael Keane makes it Everton two.
00:52:22Fuller nil.
00:52:23Off his shoulder.
00:52:26Michael Keane gives Everton some breathing space.
00:52:29I thought we played well enough today to win the game.
00:52:33But Fulham were always a threat.
00:52:35I think all the teams in the Premier League at the moment offer some form of threat.
00:52:38And you never know how things are going to go.
00:52:40But I thought today we warranted it.
00:52:42We got a couple of other goals ruled out.
00:52:44So it gave us great highs.
00:52:46But ultimately we didn't get anything from them.
00:52:48To be fair, I knew it hit my shoulder.
00:52:49I think I've had it at first.
00:52:50But I knew it hit my shoulder.
00:52:51I knew it wasn't my arm.
00:52:52So I knew it was safe.
00:52:53But yeah, obviously there's some disallowed.
00:52:55But five goals shows the pressure we were putting on.
00:52:57I know a lot of them were set players getting the ball in the box.
00:53:00But I think that was part of the plan to put pressure on.
00:53:02Especially at home, get the fans behind us.
00:53:04And I thought we did that well today.
00:53:05We played 20 minutes.
00:53:06The first and 20 minutes of the second half.
00:53:08Nothing more.
00:53:09We played the game that we should.
00:53:10We played with the precedence on the ball and off the ball that this type of games we should play.
00:53:15All the other moments of the game was not good enough at all.
00:53:19Unfortunately, Rodrigo felt something again.
00:53:21And to protect himself and ourselves, he was not in conditions to keep on the game.
00:53:25And of course, changed completely the plan again.
00:53:27We went with a different profile of a number nine.
00:53:31And it was more difficult after that for us.
00:53:33I was actually very pleased with Tiano Barry today.
00:53:36I thought that he had won his better games.
00:53:38And he was a bit unlucky not to get the goal, which was ruled out.
00:53:42But I thought he'd done a great job for the team today.
00:53:44And what he's pressing was really positive for us.
00:53:48We will talk about Tiano Barry in just a second.
00:53:51But overall from Everton, they come away with a 2-0 win.
00:53:54Where do you think they were most effective?
00:53:56They were most effective, I felt.
00:53:58Most of the time when you talk about teams, you look at the spine of a team.
00:54:01But for me, it was more the midfield three with a heartbeat to everything that was good about Everton today.
00:54:05In a game that needed a lot of energy and balance and desire.
00:54:10And that's all the Everton fans really want in a team.
00:54:13But Idris the Gaye has always been at Everton at heart.
00:54:17But what I really like of Drewsby Hall, he's getting the minutes, he's getting the time.
00:54:20And he's the willing runner out of the three.
00:54:22He's always willing to be able to create these chances out of nothing.
00:54:26And technically on the ball as well, fantastic.
00:54:30This is what I'm talking about.
00:54:31He's the player that likes to carry the ball.
00:54:33Ball carries, wins three kicks.
00:54:35And we know how important three kicks are this season particularly.
00:54:37I think he's playing with a lot more confidence as well.
00:54:40This is the goal that actually leads to being offside with Ndai.
00:54:43But you can just see the creating is coming from the midfield three.
00:54:48Barry's a bit unlucky.
00:54:49You know, Ndai was offside there.
00:54:53This, if you want to call it an assist, is interesting.
00:54:56But look, I love the fact they commit the bodies and just couldn't quite sort his feet out.
00:55:00But his mate there to back him up to get his goal.
00:55:03It does count as an assist.
00:55:04It does count as an assist, which actually surprised me.
00:55:06Because you don't have to do much these days.
00:55:08But look, I really think, again, this was another offside goal where
00:55:12just shows they're being in the right positions at the right time
00:55:15where you're going to be able to get the goals.
00:55:17And Drewsby Hall, we know about his quality.
00:55:18Set-piece is really important.
00:55:20It comes off Michael Keane's shoulder.
00:55:21But look, I think he's been an absolutely fantastic signing for him.
00:55:24I think he's deserved to be in this role.
00:55:26And he's playing with a lot more confidence than he ever has done.
00:55:29David Moyes wanted to give his support to Tiena Barry.
00:55:31And so too did the Everton fans.
00:55:33And in fact, he posted on Instagram talking about the difficult start to the season without scoring.
00:55:38But he really appreciated the ovation that he got when he came off.
00:55:42He says that he feels that it's shown that he's on the right path.
00:55:46Are you seeing that in his performances, Theo?
00:55:49I was today.
00:55:50I think all the Everton fans ask is, you know, energy and hunger and willingness not to give up.
00:55:56He scored 11 goals in La Liga.
00:55:58And that's the thing you're going to be judging, of course.
00:56:00However, he'd be disappointed in that one.
00:56:03But he's in the right position.
00:56:05He's a player today.
00:56:06It just felt he wouldn't give up.
00:56:07He didn't, you could shy away from things.
00:56:09And just the luck's not on his side at this moment in time.
00:56:11But look, I think it's important when you come from a different culture, a different league,
00:56:14is to settle in quickly.
00:56:16And I think the fans at Everton will really play a big part in that.
00:56:18So I think that's a big ask for them.
00:56:20But look, fantastic today for them.
00:56:22And a real concern for Fulham that they can't score.
00:56:24Three own goals is their top scorer.
00:56:28There we go then.
00:56:29Well, they need to maybe sign those players.
00:56:31But look, yeah, it's not good enough for Fulham because they're a team that might get dragged into it.
00:56:35Now, Chelsea were aiming for a return to the top four as they hosted managerless and winless Wolves in their first game since their sacking of Vito Pereira.
00:56:45Commentary comes from Mark Scott.
00:56:47The Wolves' hump for a new manager might be over soon with Borough boss Rob Edwards in talks about taking over.
00:56:55Meanwhile, Chelsea's search for consistency goes on after only managing a draw at Carabag in midweek.
00:57:02But Enzo Mareska's not having chat about his regular mass rotation being the reason behind it.
00:57:07There is just one change from the win at Spurs as Liam DeLapp comes in for Rhys James.
00:57:11Under-21's coach James Collins has picked the Wolves' side tonight.
00:57:15And their fans will no doubt be delighted to see Andre and Jao Gomez return with Chatua and Huang also coming in.
00:57:23It's certainly been eventful recently between these two.
00:57:2625 goals scored in the last four meetings in all competitions.
00:57:32The latest of which a 4-3 Chelsea win at Molyneux in the League Cup last week.
00:57:37Stran Larsson just about got that right.
00:57:42Golgant's lost out. Could be trouble here.
00:57:44Garnaccio.
00:57:46But there is trouble for Santiago Bueno.
00:57:50Cucurea won it back really well.
00:57:51Garnaccio was direct and Santiago Bueno has to give away the free kick in a useful area.
00:57:59Enzo Fernandes.
00:58:00He's gone for goal!
00:58:02And Johnston has to tip it away.
00:58:03Really good try this from Enzo Fernandes.
00:58:10And a smart stop from the Wolves' keeper.
00:58:13Wayne Rooney said on his BBC podcast this week that Chelsea's senior players should question Enzo Mareska's rotation policy.
00:58:21Mareska's reply was that it's impossible to play the same players all the time given what a marathon the season is.
00:58:26No one complains about it when they're winning.
00:58:31For Farnett.
00:58:33Chau Pedro trying to tickle it round for Dilap.
00:58:37He's given away in a bad area.
00:58:38Enzo Fernandes.
00:58:39Good ball.
00:58:39Garnaccio!
00:58:41Well saved by Johnston.
00:58:43But should Alejandro Garnaccio have even given him the chance to make the save?
00:58:48Comfortable save for Sam Johnston.
00:58:51And I think he should have found the net here.
00:58:58Malocusto.
00:59:00Not enough on that pass.
00:59:01And Kukurea recused by the Wolves' players and fans of a foul.
00:59:05But Andrew Kitchen wasn't having it.
00:59:08Garnaccio.
00:59:13Wolves will be fuming if this leads to anything.
00:59:16And Johnston's punch not the most convincing.
00:59:18Fernandes!
00:59:19And Johnston reacts to send it behind.
00:59:21But Wolves feel it should be a free kick for them rather than a corner kick for Chelsea.
00:59:27First piece of work from Johnston wasn't the most convincing.
00:59:30Bit better on the follow-up when Fernandes let fly.
00:59:34Enzo Fernandes with a corner kick.
00:59:36And a tricky one to deal with which is off the line.
00:59:42Johnston didn't get close to it.
00:59:44He felt it was being fouled but it needed dealing with from on the goal line.
00:59:53Chelsea have scored in all of their last 15 games in all competitions.
00:59:58The last time that they drew a blank, a goalless draw with Palace here on the opening weekend.
01:00:03They have looked a bit short of ideas up top tonight though.
01:00:08Garnaccio.
01:00:08Just delayed by Chachua.
01:00:15Now it's Kukureo back for Alejandro Garnaccio.
01:00:18That's nice.
01:00:20So is that.
01:00:20Gusto!
01:00:24Malo Gusto's first ever senior goal gives Chelsea the lead.
01:00:30What a moment for him and what a surprise it is to see that Malo Gusto's the man to find a way through the Wolves' back line.
01:00:42Credit to Alejandro Garnaccio.
01:00:44He is twisting and turning and curling ball in which was begging to be put away.
01:00:50Not the man that they thought would be the one to make it happen.
01:00:56But Malo Gusto has made it.
01:00:58Chelsea won.
01:00:59Wolves nil.
01:01:05Belgaard.
01:01:06Having a go!
01:01:09I think Sanchez was always confident it was drifting over the top.
01:01:12That goes down as Wolves' first shot in the game.
01:01:16Even if it was a fair way off target.
01:01:20It's a fair way off target.
01:01:26Neto.
01:01:28Jean-Petro.
01:01:32Into Fernandez.
01:01:40Moises Caicedo.
01:01:45Esteval.
01:01:47Stamford Bridge on its feet.
01:01:49what's the brazilian got here it's got a low ball in and he's teed up ciao pedro for chelsea's
01:01:56second immediate impact from esteval to set up ciao pedro to put daylight between chelsea and wolves
01:02:09the boys from brazil to the business for chelsea esteval who's been on the pitch for barely two
01:02:16minutes esteval's cut back getting a touch of cretci and then bang from ciao pedro who didn't
01:02:24even think about it instincts took over and that's what chelsea have lacked today there's been too much
01:02:30thinking but ciao pedro trusted his gut there and chelsea now are looking good for the win
01:02:40he's looking for stran larsen that by the head of shallabara now quickly on for carnacho
01:02:46contiago bueno outpaced by garnacho and garnacho's crossed netto game over now
01:02:56the former wolves man rubber stamps the win for chelsea
01:03:01and again there's credit very quickly for the man who was the provider alejandro garnacho this time the
01:03:10one to tee up a teammate two really good assists tonight from alejandro garnacho the first that
01:03:17beautiful cross for gusto the second an excellent run and measured cross which again put it on a plate
01:03:26for another in blue pedro netto the beneficiary this time around and chelsea coasting to the win now
01:03:38they can put their feet up with the points in the bag chelsea three wolves now
01:03:45no teams ever stayed up in the premier league after taking just two points from their opening 10 games
01:03:54it's going to be two from 11 for wolves this season
01:03:58i say those rob that estep out now ciao pedro in plenty of room garnacho was waiting ciao pedro
01:04:08spilled and then mark you who's just come on couldn't convert the rebound
01:04:16all started with caicedo nicking possession estival to ciao pedro whose effort was deflected that's why
01:04:22johnston made a bit of a meal of it but mark you unable to take advantage off the post and out
01:04:38now munetzi surging through the middle and nearly getting them on the board tonight munetzi
01:04:46onto it but half a yard wide at the post that was almost another of the silly goals that chelsea
01:04:53have conceded recently in the words of enzo mareska
01:04:58there's sometimes a bit of negativity around the way things are going but right now things are looking
01:05:03good no it's more noise from outside inside we are convinced that we go in the right direction but
01:05:12uh at the same time we can do many things better when we look at the squad do you think there's
01:05:17enough out there to still stay in the premier league yeah i do i really do our season won't be decided on
01:05:23chelsea away like today what i've seen but they've shown they can show spirit they've shown they can
01:05:27show drive determination and then if we can add a little bit quality to it then who knows alejandro
01:05:33garnacho scored for you in the week and two really really good assists tonight as well yeah he was very
01:05:39good it was very good but not only on the ball he was also very good off the ball the way he was
01:05:43pressing and this is what we need from our wingers it was really straightforward for chelsea against
01:05:49the team who are without a manager without a win so far in the premier league this season
01:05:54but enzo mareska singled out alejandro garnacho what did you make of him alan yeah i was really impressed
01:05:59with him scored in midweek as he said i think it was his best game today i thought he caused problems
01:06:03uh all evening down that uh down the left hand side and uh whoever was was coming up against him
01:06:10he had uh he had more pace than we went past them with uh with ease and he was a real threat and
01:06:15putting balls good balls into the uh into the into the box for his uh for his forwards and of course
01:06:21they benefited from that i thought he looked really really comfortable you can see there what he wants
01:06:26to do and all right i think the goalkeeper should do better there but at least he's going past the
01:06:31defender and at least he's getting balls into the box which is what he did really really well here
01:06:36it's a it's a it's a really clever ball in gustos first goal it was like put on a plate but this one
01:06:42for me i mean going past when i look he's just not going to catch him and then sometimes the most
01:06:46difficult pass when someone is free in the middle and there's no one around you but not on that occasion
01:06:52into netto for an absolute tapping how you like them as any forward and i thought it was a real threat
01:06:57all evening theo wolves don't have a manager yet but rob edwards contract at middlesbrough has been
01:07:02suspended because he wanted permission to to talk to wolves the clubs have agreed uh have come to an
01:07:08agreement it's now about agreeing personal terms for rob edwards do you feel that this is a side
01:07:14that can stay up given that no side with two points at this stage of the season has ever survived in the
01:07:19premier league i think it's me too too difficult very difficult as well when a new manager comes in new
01:07:24ideas players can always find that quite difficult to adapt but look i think it's a big ass of wolves to
01:07:29now stay in this league i think it's too much for them now so would it then be a surprising move for
01:07:34rob edwards well i get his connection with wolves and where he is and it has a house in the particular
01:07:40area but i think middlesbrough give him a great opportunity and i think it's very very harsh on them
01:07:46and i think it's a huge risk from his point of view because i don't see them staying up at all i don't
01:07:50see enough ability in that uh in that squad and i don't see it being very inviting for any player
01:07:55to go there in january either so it's a big gamble let's take a look then at the premier league table
01:08:01arsenal are still six points clear at the top chelsea have climbed to second and just two points
01:08:07separate them and eighth place manchester united everton are up three places they're into 11th
01:08:13fulham remain 15th west ham stay in the bottom three only behind burnley on goal difference
01:08:19winners wolves stay bottom thank you very much to alan shirer and theo welcott for your company this
01:08:26evening so arsenal drop points at sunderland who are unbeaten at home their house party continues
01:08:32thanks to mr brobby
