00:00What a free throw!
00:02Oh, look out! Oh, look at that!
00:04Absolutely phenomenal!
00:06Rudy! Oh!
00:08Welcome to Match of the Dead.
00:30Good evening. A Northwest doubleheader on tonight's Match of the Day featuring a Manchester derby and Champions Liverpool's trip to Burnley.
00:59We'll also bring you August Goal of the Month, and I'm joined in the studio by Danny Murphy and Theo Walcott.
01:05We're going to start with the 197th Manchester derby.
01:10Before kick-off, City remembered one of their most loved fans, boxer Ricky Hatton, whose death was announced earlier today.
01:17Guy Mowbray was at the Etihad.
01:20Well, this always felt like it might be a different kind of Manchester derby.
01:25The awful news of the passing of Ricky Hatton is just 46 means it definitely is now.
01:31Britain has lost a true sporting great.
01:34Manchester one of its favourite sons.
01:36This football club, one of its own most fervent fans.
01:41To the line-ups, and in a City side change by six from defeat at Brighton two weeks ago, there's a debut for goalkeeper Gigi Donnarumma and a return to action after injury for Phil Foden.
01:55Donnarumma, Addu Kadir, Kusunov, and Tijani Rinders are all playing in their first Manchester derby.
02:01For United, derby debuts for Brian Mbumo.
02:04Benjamin Szczesko starting in the Premier League for the first time.
02:07And Altai Bayender, who stays in goal despite the signing of Belgian keeper Senna Lammans, he's on the bench.
02:19A moment then to pay tribute and give thanks for a life well lived and shared with millions in good times and bad.
02:26Ricky Hatton, forever a blue, revered by many reds and all of Manchester.
02:43It's raining, it's Manchester, it's derby day.
02:47And no matter what the current fortunes of the blue and the red of the City.
02:53Twice a season, at least twice a season.
02:57These games just matter more, this is the one.
03:00And City are starting brightly with Haaland.
03:05Not far away at all.
03:09His 150th game for City.
03:13127 goals scored along the way.
03:16Here's Bruno Fernandes.
03:18That's a really good pass.
03:20Masraoui was waiting for it and Bermos on his way.
03:26And Szczesko.
03:27And he's nice to dig out the shot and bring out the first save for Gigi Donnarumma in the Manchester City goal.
03:34Only one win in Manchester United's last nine Premier League away games.
03:41That was at Leicester in March.
03:43There's been a lot of talk in the build-up to the game about which head coach is under the most pressure.
03:49Which, when you think about Pep Guardiola's record and legacy here, seems remarkable.
03:53With all the pressure that he's under is entirely self-inflicted.
03:57That was awkward for the keeper.
04:02Bayern just about does enough to deny Haaland, who had a chance.
04:07An unexpected one.
04:09So there's Senna Lammans sitting next to Harry Maguire.
04:12He's Manchester United's latest goalkeeper option.
04:16Signed from Royal Antwerp of Belgium.
04:18Not deemed ready for the cauldron of the Etihad today.
04:25Doku.
04:27Brilliant from Doku.
04:30And he keeps on going, and Bowden hits it in!
04:33The local hero for the team in blue.
04:49Dazzlingly delivered by Doku.
04:52This is where he starts.
04:54Lovely drop of the shoulder, super footwork.
04:57Then the bit of good fortune.
04:59But how many players would have let that run for the corner?
05:02Probably most.
05:04Jeremy Doku had other ideas.
05:06Keep the momentum.
05:07Find Phil Foden.
05:09And he does the rest to make it Manchester City 1.
05:12Manchester United 0.
05:17And it was left to Phil Foden, Manchester's own.
05:20To do the pre-match interview and pay his own tribute to Ricky Hatton.
05:23And he said, we'll go out there and we'll try and win it for him.
05:27So there could be no more fitting a first goal scorer.
05:32Foden intercepts the pass of Masraoui.
05:37Rindis, nobody out to the right.
05:41Nicely won by Ugarte.
05:42And Ugarte has he sprung offside.
05:44It's a lovely ball through to Mfermo!
05:46And Mfermo has blazed the chance.
05:49Now the flag is up.
05:50And he might be glad to see it.
05:54I think he was just off.
05:57Yeah, only just.
06:00Maybe that was lurking in his mind somewhere, but it shouldn't have been.
06:03Had to at least test Donnarumma.
06:10Hands clasped together.
06:12In thought, not prayer, but...
06:15We're getting to the stage soon where prayer's needed.
06:17Doku.
06:20Haaland.
06:23Goal!
06:27So, so simple.
06:29So, so City and Haaland.
06:31The finish made it look easy.
06:37Just too strong and just too good.
06:43Doku, who was strong himself to hold off despite being held by Euro.
06:49And Erling Haaland has another goal.
06:54128 in 150 Manchester City games.
07:00And in the Derbys, it's seven in nine.
07:05City two, United nil.
07:10Haaland's hunting now.
07:11Look at him.
07:13Chasing down by under.
07:15He gets it out to Ugarte.
07:16He hasn't got time.
07:18And De Ligt gives it to Doku.
07:21Left to run to Haaland.
07:22He's in again.
07:24And he's gonna score again.
07:25No, he's not.
07:26Incredible.
07:28Still it's alive.
07:29And now it's gone.
07:32It's gonna be a Manchester United throw-in at the end of all that.
07:37Mess after United mess here.
07:42Allowed to run through to Haaland.
07:43It seems so certain he's gonna score.
07:46Euro then took it away from goalkeeper Byender.
07:52And even the great football brain of Pep Guardiola hasn't seen that sort of thing too often.
07:57And City fans launch into a belting rendition of there's only one Ricky Hatton.
08:10It's Embermo.
08:12What a good save.
08:14It was a brilliant attempt from Brian Embermo.
08:16But now we have seen the best of Gigi Donnarumma.
08:23Eyes on the ball all the way.
08:25Perfect connection.
08:27Top stop.
08:29And even Diaz reveling in it, as is Rodri.
08:34Luis Enrique, the head coach of PSG,
08:36is saying he wanted to go down a different direction with his goalkeepers this season.
08:40Guardiola seems to want to go down a different direction himself, so...
08:44Donnarumma will do.
08:45Won't he just?
08:46Harland's gonna get onto that.
08:49No, he's not.
08:50Maguire did.
08:51But now he's gonna get onto this.
08:53Played in by Bernardo Silva.
08:56This to wrap it up.
09:07Never in any doubt whatsoever.
09:09Once again, it is all a bit of a Manchester United mess.
09:17Maguire then thought he'd tidied it up, but presented it to Bernardo Silva.
09:22Harland held his run.
09:23He's in his own half.
09:24No problem there.
09:25And no problem there either.
09:31And that takes him, in his 50th home game in the Premier League,
09:35to 50 home goals in the Premier League.
09:39In terms of goals, incidentally, it's now absolutely dead level
09:42over all those years of history.
09:45278 scored each.
09:49Harland.
09:51Reinders runs ahead of him.
09:52Reinders is played through by Harland.
09:55And Tijani, Reinders has missed the target.
09:59With a fourth goal gaping.
10:04He can still smile.
10:05His team are three up.
10:09Meynou.
10:12Bruno Fernandes.
10:17Dorgu will again dutifully try and get down that left-hand flank,
10:20but the ball's gone the other way to Ahmad.
10:24Ahmad turns Iko O'Reilly twice, and it hits Embermo and goes behind.
10:30In fact, it's been given as a corner.
10:32I think it was going wide anyway, but it did brush the boot of Donnarumma.
10:43Corner then.
10:45Donnarumma will get a right-hand to it.
10:47Here's Bruno Fernandes.
10:48And Casemiro pokes wide.
10:49Surely was offside.
10:50The key part in all of that is he really should have scored and then let the arguments develop after that.
11:04If a consolation goal does come, it won't be any consolation to many in the away end who are no longer in the away end.
11:12I suspect there was a time not long ago at all when Sir Jim Ratcliffe really enjoyed his afternoons out watching football.
11:22Doesn't enjoy many of them right now.
11:24A great roar to greet the final whistle at the Etihad Stadium.
11:34It would appear that any reports you may have read about Manchester City being in a spot of bother this season have been written somewhat prematurely.
11:43Similar reports suggesting all is not well with Manchester United. Unfortunately for them a dead right.
11:53Pep Guardiola can enter the Champions League this week in fine battle.
11:58City 3, United 0 in Manchester derby number 197.
12:05We all know these games are more special, say what you want.
12:08Of course a game is a game, but we know how much it means for the fans.
12:13I'm a fan myself, so I know how much it means to win these games.
12:17It means a bit more. It's a bit more special. So, fantastic. I'm happy.
12:23Erling, his commitment this season is unbelievable.
12:25His physicality is so strong. He scored two goals, he missed another one clear.
12:30Two games, seven goals is not bad.
12:33I must ask you, on this sad day ultimately, about Ricky Hatton, Pep.
12:37It's so sad. It's really, really sad. And of course, on behalf of Man City, because I know how close he was, how big fan, how he's been incredible now.
12:44How big world champion from boxing. I would like to send a comfort photo. I'm pretty sure tough, tough moments.
12:49We suffer goals that we can do better. The first one is in the middle of four guys and we can be more aggressive in that moment because we were near the ball.
13:01The second goal, we want to recover the ball so fast that in a throw-in they have one against one.
13:08The third goal, lack of quality in the connection. People doesn't know who is going to the ball and then the guy is free to score.
13:19So these details we can work, but then in these kind of games we need to be perfect.
13:26Our players have a lot of pride and they want to try to do better in a special day. So make after the game.
13:33I will walk in front of the fans and see their faces, how happy they were alongside to us. That is what our job is so, so privileged.
13:40It's no surprise, Theo, that Erling Haaland scored in a Manchester derby. He has a fantastic record.
13:47But in terms of his performance, is that about as complete a performance as you've seen from him?
13:53It is. We talk about a lot of the number nines across world football at this moment in time.
13:57But for me, there's only one that stands out because he always plays to his strengths.
14:01And Erling Haaland today, complete performance. You know, we talk about Erling Haaland at times in matches when he actually doesn't get involved in the game.
14:07But what I really liked about Haaland was his start. He just showed that, De Ligt, you're going to be in a fight today.
14:13Not just him, but Luke Shaw the same, but just nudges him there.
14:17And straight away, you know you're in for a game when you're against Erling Haaland.
14:20Obviously, a lot happens, but Doku and Foden were excellent today. It helped out with his game.
14:24But this is what you expect from Erling Haaland early on. He was coming deep.
14:29He was showing his power, his presence. Like Pep was just saying there, physicality is a moment in time for me.
14:34He's in probably the best shape he could be right now. Maybe just the short there is touch.
14:38But look, not just that. I talk about complete players. He's a player who's a winner.
14:41He wants to help his team in this situation as well, where we talk about the best finishes in the world.
14:46But he's back here defending for his team in a Man United derby.
14:50He knows how important it is for the squad right now. And you see here, he's heading it, but he's getting up.
14:56And I love this. This is what Erling Haaland is all about now. He always occupies the centre-arse in these positions.
15:02And he just feeds off it. It was early on in the season. He always does this.
15:05But just the finish, you expect it now. You always expect these finishes.
15:09And it's the strength and the power. And he always finds a weakness in any team.
15:12And Luke Shaw was that weakness today. And that goal showed it for me.
15:16This one here has probably shocked a lot of people, me included, to be fair.
15:21Danny, we actually said maybe he should have scored this one.
15:23But look, we can have that. We can give him that opportunity.
15:26But this is what I was saying about coming deep and being involved in the game.
15:29A bit different. Again, he just nudges Luke Shaw there.
15:31That shows the weakness in the team, but causing it deep.
15:34And he can do this on the other side of it as well.
15:35By when you're having someone like Reimbers make deep runs,
15:38it can really affect Man City in a different way.
15:41But what I really like here is that it's the last finish, because this is all what we see.
15:45We talk about forwards having a picture in your head before you finish.
15:49And he already knows where he's going to go.
15:51And it's one of those where you overthink things.
15:53He's not an overthinker as a forward. He's one of the best.
15:55And what I like about this finish is the third touch.
15:57It's out of his feet. He knows exactly what he's doing.
15:59A little look. And for me, complete forward position today. Incredible.
16:03And you look at his touches in the map, particularly in the box,
16:07compared to Cesco right now. None for Cesco.
16:12So for me, he's got to look at Erlen Haaland and look at his attributes and his physicality,
16:16like Pep was saying, and he needs more of that.
16:18But that just shows for me that Cesco needs to learn a lot from him.
16:20But 11 goals as well in six games.
16:22I know, of course, it was against Moldova, but however, they all count.
16:25So for me, Erlen Haaland, it's moment of time.
16:27Erlen Haaland will definitely be counting them.
16:29And he'll be counting his goals in Manchester derbies as well.
16:32Because since he joined Manchester City, there have been eight goals in Manchester derbies.
16:36In that same time, Manchester United as a team have managed eight goals from 38 different players.
16:42But the other player on that list that was playing today was Phil Foden.
16:47He's got seven. He's not too far behind Haaland.
16:49He loves a Manchester derby.
16:51And how important was he in today's win for City?
16:54He was outstanding.
16:55And I think irrelevant of your allegiances.
16:57If you love watching creative football, Foden at his best is a real joy to watch.
17:02He was growing in confidence, especially after the goal, the flicks, the tricks, the awareness,
17:07playing in his favourite position where he could float about, make things happen.
17:11I don't know why he didn't hit the heights last season.
17:14Maybe lost a bit of confidence, maybe some injuries, competition for places.
17:18All these things can factor in for a young player.
17:22But today, he got the opportunity. There's been injuries for Marmouche and Turkey.
17:27And he's grasped it with both hands.
17:29And when he plays like that, he makes the decision easy for Pep.
17:33And it's great to see. I'm pleased for him.
17:35After back-to-back defeats for City before the international break,
17:38is this a reset win, a reset performance, Theo?
17:41Yeah, I think it is. I think it's probably the perfect game coming off an international break
17:44when you look at the amount of players that you don't get to work with as well.
17:47But for me, it's no bigger game to get yourself up for as a player.
17:50So when you're playing against Man United, it was always an important game for any player and any team.
17:55But it's really important for Pep Guardiola to get results
17:58because we don't expect him to lose this many and then to still be able to actually compete in the league.
18:02Of course, they did have a...
18:04They still finished reasonably quite strong, I think, last year.
18:07But I think it's a big season. It's a big change now in the dynamic at Man City.
18:12You look at the goalkeeper and certain players that have come in.
18:15But for me, Man City are still a problem.
18:18You mentioned the goalkeeper as well.
18:20Both of these sides have new goalkeepers.
18:22Manchester United chose not to go with Lamens.
18:24But Gigi Donnarumma started for Manchester City.
18:27He will have tougher tests. He'll have busier days in the Manchester City goal.
18:31But how would you assess his first performance?
18:33Well, he did a couple of brilliant things.
18:36We know his qualities. He's a Champions League winner.
18:39This save here from Mbumo at 2-0 is so important
18:43because of United's score there. The momentum changes.
18:46It's just the huge frame. Look at the width he gets and his fingertips.
18:51It's a phenomenal save. And exactly why they decided to bring him in.
18:55Because he is more experienced than Trafford. He's got more presence.
18:58I think a brilliant goalkeeper can be the difference.
19:02You know, eight, nine, ten points even in a season.
19:05What about Manchester United?
19:07It's been a really poor start to the season for them.
19:10There's lots of criticism of Ruben Amirim's shape.
19:13We heard a lot about this before he came in as Manchester United manager.
19:17We know what's on the ticket when he came into the Premier League.
19:21Is this the cause, a cause, of their problems?
19:25At times, I'm not a big fan of the shape, but I have to say
19:28I've seen all of their first four games and I think it's improved.
19:32They look more compact. They look like they know what they're doing more.
19:35Their bigger problem, they're not as easy to play through.
19:38Their bigger problem in recent weeks has been the individuals
19:41he's playing in the wrong positions in that shape for me.
19:44Bruno, being a great example, has been one of Europe's best number tens.
19:48Now asking him to be an eight and do defensive work and spot danger,
19:52which he just doesn't do very well.
19:54Shaw, a centre-half, another one.
19:56I'm going to go through the two goals and show you what I mean.
19:58There's the shape. The three with the two wing-backs,
20:00the two in midfield and the three.
20:02So the 3-4-3, if you like.
20:04Ugarte's in a good position. He should know better,
20:07but he's so keen to try and get the ball.
20:09He's always stepping out.
20:10When you step out and you play in that middle of the park,
20:13good teams find that space.
20:15That little pocket we talk about.
20:17Look at the top of your picture.
20:18Fernandes has got Foden, no problem.
20:20Doku gets the turn.
20:21Luke Shaw in a central play.
20:23Now this is bad defending whether you're a left-back or a centre-half.
20:25Don't get me wrong.
20:26But he's too square and it's too easy to fly by him.
20:29And as he goes by him, then you're in the box, there's problems.
20:31And Bruno, look at him, ball-watching.
20:33Now I don't think Bruno's lazy.
20:35He's back in position.
20:36I just think he's so not used to spotting runners.
20:39He had the same problem at Fulham a couple of weeks ago
20:41when Emile Smith wrote a run off the back of him.
20:43We know his quality.
20:44He's a wonderful player.
20:45But you're asking him to change his thinking on the pitch,
20:48which he hasn't played that role often enough.
20:50He still should be able to track a run.
20:52He's an intelligent footballer,
20:53but the manager's got to put players in there who do it better.
20:56There's the system again.
20:57The spaces are good, close together.
20:59There's no big areas City can take advantage of.
21:02Ugarte again jumps out of position.
21:04Why?
21:05There's no danger there.
21:06Stay with Foden.
21:07Then it's a knock-on effect.
21:08Masraoui's late.
21:09Jorah decides he's got to win the ball back
21:11against one of the strongest players at role in you in the league.
21:15And there's the physicality we're talking about.
21:17Theo mentioned Shaw at centre-half.
21:19De Ligt struggling a bit for pace
21:22against one of the best centre-fours.
21:23Don't get me wrong in the world.
21:25But Amorim, if he wants to play that system,
21:28can't put round pegs and square holes.
21:31You've got to have players who understand the role.
21:34If you are a holding midfielder in that system,
21:36you've got to track runners and you've got to spot danger.
21:39And we know Bruno's better in forward positions,
21:41so the manager has to take some responsibility.
21:43But in terms of just blaming the system, no.
21:46I think the people playing in the...
21:49Palace play it well.
21:50They're a more pragmatic side than United, granted.
21:52But I think you pick players in those positions
21:54that can do the job.
21:55Don't shoehorn them in.
21:57How is it when a manager comes in
21:59with a very distinct philosophy
22:02and tries to put players in those positions
22:04but it's not necessarily playing to their strengths, Theo?
22:07You know, I can really relate.
22:09When I was asked to do something that I...
22:11I mean, I could try and do it,
22:12but you're talking about my profile player
22:14coming into the number 10 into the pockets
22:16and then backed against the, you know, play
22:18and that's not my game, but I'll do it for you.
22:20And that's the issue now that Danny was saying
22:22about managers and systems,
22:23you're putting personnel just so they could fit it.
22:26But you're actually forgetting about their strengths
22:28and, you know, we talk about...
22:30Obviously, my strength was always pace,
22:32but why would you want me in the number 10 position?
22:34It's like, Danny, would you have yourself
22:35making those runs in behind?
22:36You're just not going to do it.
22:37So why ask players to do things that they can't?
22:39But it's not saying they can't do it.
22:41It's just an issue right now at the moment in time for many nights.
22:43It's not clicking for them.
22:44Danny's face suggests that maybe he thinks he can.
22:46He's got a bit of pace.
22:48Time now for August goal of the month.
22:50Here's your shortlist.
22:52Let's go.
22:53Let's go.
22:54Let's go.
22:55Let's go.
22:56Let's go.
22:57Let's go.
22:58Let's go.
22:59Let's go.
23:00Let's go.
23:01Let's go.
23:02Let's go.
23:03Let's go.
23:04Let's go.
23:05Let's go.
23:06Let's go.
23:07Let's go.
23:08Let's go.
23:09Let's go.
23:10Let's go.
23:11Let's go.
23:12Let's go.
23:13Let's go.
23:14Let's go.
23:15Let's go.
23:16Let's go.
23:17Let's go.
23:18Let's go.
23:19Let's go.
23:20Let's go.
23:21Semenyo.
23:22Evan Nielsen to his right, Tapinator's left, he's got to go left shortly.
23:25He goes alone and scores brilliantly.
23:29What about this?
23:29Running from way inside his own half of the field.
23:33The runners right and left, and Semenyo went straight down the middle.
23:38Great goal.
23:39Let's go.
23:44It's a brilliant effort and a sensational goal by Richarlison.
23:55You'll have to go a long way to find a better goal in the coming months than that one.
24:00Lovely work by Koudis and Richarlison buried it.
24:04Super goal.
24:10This is Lucas Fiketa.
24:12That's his own from Rage.
24:15What a goal!
24:19Lucas Fiketa.
24:21He wrote it many better than that all season.
24:25Takes the West Ham fans' breath away with that one.
24:28Take these times to get out of my words, I'll let out the water.
24:34Make my smile for another hour, I'll take out your time.
24:4090 seconds to go.
24:42Berk has forced it for Bradley.
24:44He's picked out Chiesa.
24:45Now it's Salah.
24:47So Bozla letting it run.
24:48Oh!
24:49Would you believe it?
24:51Rio Nogamara, the 16-year-old, has possibly just won it for Liverpool.
24:59Salah's ball across.
25:01So Bozla is done it.
25:02And the unerring finish from a young man, Rio Nogamara, with the final word.
25:10Grealish, Everton have movement again here at Dewsbury Hall.
25:22Oh, that's a great goal.
25:25Everton extend their lead.
25:27Grealish in all kinds of space.
25:32Dewsbury Hall there, got the height to beat Jose Sarr.
25:35It always works that little bit better when it goes in off the woodwork.
25:39Oh, it's in.
25:49He's found a way.
25:54Absolutely magnificent from Dominic Saboslai.
25:58He got just the right amount of curl, just the right amount of tower, and put it in just the right place to beat Raya.
26:07Nigh-on perfect.
26:13Kamada into Tyreek Mitchell.
26:16Compton clears.
26:18Mark Gay.
26:19Oh, Mark Gay for Crystal Palace.
26:22Oh, there's some tough choices in there.

27:00Champions Liverpool travel to newly promoted Burnley,
27:03looking to continue their 100% start to the season.
27:06Stephen Wyeth watched this one.
27:09A consummate start to Liverpool's title defence,
27:12outscoring the rest on their way to three wins from three.
27:15And whilst the squad's been supplemented since, the record signing isn't called upon today.
27:21Burnley are satisfied too.
27:23An early season home win and subsequent demonstration of resolve at Old Trafford.
27:28Two Burnley changes from that dramatic late defeat by Manchester United.
27:32Josh Laurent instead of Hannibal is a nod towards increased defensive solidity.
27:36Loom Chalna gets a first Premier League start in place of the absent Brun Larsson.
27:41The headline Liverpool team news regards who isn't involved rather than who is.
27:46Arna Slott deciding time on the training ground of more benefit to Alexander Isak than a cameo here.
27:51So it's an unchanged 11 from the win over Arsenal,
27:54with Dominic Zobrishlai again at right-back.
27:57Liverpool brimming with confidence,
28:01not just because of their scintillating start to the season,
28:04but because this is the ground on which they have won their last six visits.
28:09Here's Chalna.
28:11Chance for Burnley to show what they're capable of.
28:14And maybe even better than that.
28:18Jadon Anthony not too far away.
28:20And that's brought the home fans to life.
28:25Chance for Scott Parker's side early on.
28:28He's yet to taste defeat at home as the Burnley manager.
28:34A record that will be seriously tested by the champions today, no doubt.
28:40Zobrishlai.
28:42Walker.
28:44And that's to opt for the immediate safety of a corner conceded.
28:50What can Liverpool do with the set-piece that Walker has presented them with?
28:56In from Gakpo.
28:58Dangerously so as well.
29:01And Kanate was the player meeting it.
29:04And unable to direct the header downwards from right in front of the goal.
29:14Akatike and Ekdau getting involved.
29:18And then when the whistle blows, it's a yellow card for Lesley Uga-Chukwu.
29:25Who seems unconvinced.
29:28Once he'd left his feet, Uga-Chukwu is taking a risk.
29:37Gravenberg.
29:38That's a lovely turn away from Cullen.
29:40First of pace as well.
29:41Fitz.
29:42Charged down by a stiff.
29:43Van Dijk.
29:50Kierkez.
29:51Gravenberg.
29:52Kierkez outstanding.
29:53And then Kierkez goes to ground.
29:56And has been penalised for simulation.
30:00Michael Oliver unimpressed and reacting immediately to caution the Liverpool left-back.
30:05Well, the build-up play was sublime, but was the subsequent tumble ridiculous?
30:12That decision has been upheld by the VAR Paul Tierney.
30:17Change left-back for Liverpool.
30:21Uga-Chukwu is cautioned for simulation.
30:25Doesn't see the opening 45 through to its conclusion.
30:28Arna Slott thinks Andy Robertson will give him better balance.
30:36Robertson's first touch since coming on.
30:39Liverpool's vice-captain might just give them a little bit more of the leadership quality they require under the circumstances of this game.
30:46Robertson looking to make an immediate impact and getting the game's first shot on target mere moments after being introduced into the action.
30:57Well, he's obviously spotted from the sidelines something that's been lacking for Liverpool and thought he was able to provide it.
31:02Not too far away from finding the far corner, if indeed that was what he was trying to achieve.
31:25Very different-looking Liverpool all of a sudden.
31:27Canate away, Ekotike.
31:44Gravenberg, drop of the shoulder was mighty effective.
31:49Kakpo, Robertson, Vietz, just beyond the reach of Ekotike.
31:57Could Ekotike have reacted any quicker?
32:12Robertson for Gakpo.
32:16Scampering away from Walker, making excellent progress and going to ground,
32:20but the decision is corner.
32:22Rather than the strangled claims from behind for a penalty.
32:30There was a little bit of contact between the two,
32:32but the most relevant was Walker poking the ball behind.
32:38First corner kick of the second half.
32:41Hiding towards the near post where it's dealt with by Hartman.
32:45At least in the first instance, Ekotike is working there for Liverpool,
32:49and it's thundered back towards goal.
32:51A scintillating effort from Ryan Gravenberg.
32:57Gravenberg, who scored in Liverpool's last game away from home,
33:01very nearly did so again.
33:08Gakpo.
33:13It's kept Liverpool moving. Robertson.
33:16Bradley getting forward.
33:22Flighted in delightfully.
33:24One full-back to another.
33:26Very nearly resulting in the game's opening goal.
33:29A year ago today, at home to Nottingham Forest,
33:34the last time that Liverpool failed to score in a Premier League game.
33:38It's worried that 365 days later, it's going to happen again.
33:43Bornly have been full of defensive result.
33:48Here comes Wirtz.
33:54Twisting and turning, and getting a shot away.
33:58Didn't look like it was on,
34:00but Harry and Wirtz made something happen for Liverpool there.
34:03It's only Cullen inside out.
34:05The shot started far too far outside the post.
34:08It's not any chance of curling back inside it.
34:11Cullen! Cullen! Cullen! Cullen!
34:13Cullen! Cullen!
34:15Chobas Leif from range.
34:18Has forced the first meaningful save out of Martin Dobarauka.
34:22Well, it was his brilliant free kick that finally saw off Arsenal
34:26before the international break.
34:28And he took matters into his own hands again there, Dominic Chobas Leif.
34:34Up until this point, his players have executed his plan to perfection.
34:38Robertson.
34:48Hits an in towards Chiesa.
34:51His first touch as a substitute, very nearly a decisive touch,
34:57getting himself in the centre-forward position and reacting as though on target
35:03was the very, very bare minimum with that opportunity.
35:08Wirtz.
35:11Foul by Uga Chukwu.
35:14Who's going to have to walk here because that's his second yellow card.
35:19The red is produced.
35:21And if Burnley are going to get themselves over the line today with a hard-earned point,
35:25they will have to do it with ten men.
35:28Booked early on in the game, Leslie Uga Chukwu,
35:31and cautioned again for an ill-timed lunge at Florian Betts.
35:35He took the risk and has received the punishment.
35:39Bradley.
35:53Robertson.
35:53Mgumaha.
35:58For Frimpong, who had to get the shot away earlier,
36:02Dubravka was able to get himself set and make the save.
36:04Asking, though, where the defence momentarily disappeared to.
36:15So much luck.
36:19Frimpong.
36:19It's starting to feel like now or never for Liverpool.
36:23A handball penalty.
36:26Cruel on Burnley and Hannibal, but the arm was outstretched.
36:29He knows what he's done.
36:31And Liverpool have a late opportunity to win the game.
36:3593 minutes of sterling defensive work unravelling with what must be judged to be a moment of madness,
36:46despair for Hannibal and for the Burnley supporters watching on.
36:51The responsibility falls on Mohamed Salah.
36:57What can Dubravka in the Burnley goal do about it?
37:03Salah for Liverpool.
37:05Scores emphatically.
37:08And Liverpool look good now to maintain their perfect start.
37:13Under pressure.
37:15A thunderously accurate spot kick.
37:19It has taken 95 minutes of tireless work, but Liverpool finally have their goal.
37:26Burnley 0, Liverpool 1.
37:29Today, at times, we had to survive.
37:31We had to survive.
37:32And today, we had to dig and go to places that not many human beings sometimes go to.
37:37It would have been easy to tap out.
37:39And in life, sometimes there's a lot of people that tap out.
37:42My team didn't tap out today.
37:44And for that, I'm immensely proud.
37:45They worked tirelessly for the calls.
37:50They put their body where their body needed to go and they resorted back to a default position,
37:55which was, let's do what we can.
37:57And for that, I'm immensely proud of them.
37:59But if you play 95 minutes in their 16, in their 18, in Holland we see 16 meters, so in their 18-yard box,
38:06then there is a chance that the ball eventually will fall once in the right way for you.
38:12But it was difficult because they were having ten players over there, 11 with the goalkeeper included,
38:17there as well.
38:18So then, yeah, you either need a little bit of luck or a moment of magic.
38:23And we didn't have the moment of magic, but we had the moment of luck.
38:26You were hoping and trying.
38:27That's also what we tried with the substitutions we made to make it more and more difficult for them.
38:33But they stood strong.
38:33What, if anything, have you, as a team, had to say to Hannibal?
38:37Because he must be devastated for what was ultimately a mistake that led to the penalty.
38:41Yeah, but this is the life.
38:44We can't just say, Hannibal, it's your fault.
38:46No, absolutely not.
38:47This is the life and it's just a small mistake, but you don't do it.
38:52It's not like a big fault.
38:53You can do something else.
38:56No, no, you need to look forward and don't be disappointed about that.
38:59And all of the team is behind him, so no problem.
39:01I don't think in football there's much sympathy.
39:03Obviously it's unfortunate, but it happens and he's on the wrong side of it.
39:09And that's for him obviously not nice, but for us obviously the right decision and we took the three points.
39:16Danny, by every metric, this looks like a dominant Liverpool performance.
39:21Even just looking at the XG and the possession, the number of passes.
39:25However, it didn't feel inevitable that there was a Liverpool goal coming in this game.
39:29No, Burnley deserve great credit.
39:31They defended really well with a really good game plan and fought right to the end.
39:37They can take some pride from that performance.
39:38The number on there that the crosses for Liverpool, 44, is really high for a Liverpool team.
39:44The reason that happened is because of Burnley's tactical plan, which was to condense the middle of the field and force Liverpool out wide.
39:51Probably because they thought they didn't have a great aerial threat when the crosses were coming in.
39:55And first off, it kind of played out that way.
39:57There's the system, the 5-4-1.
39:59Kerkhez puts a cross in early, but as you can see, Eketike's in there on his own, easy for the defenders.
40:06And it took Liverpool a long time to work out that they had to start trying to get in the box in more numbers and more intensity.
40:12It didn't happen, really, until the second half.
40:14Again, here you see Gakpo.
40:16Even if he gets his head up or plays into Kerkhez there, there's nobody in the box.
40:19Eketike's coming to feet.
40:20He needs to be in there waiting for the cross and keep his position.
40:23And this was the problem.
40:25And this is why Burnley in the first half, I thought particularly, really stopped Liverpool from making lots of really good chances.
40:32Again, you can see how narrow they are.
40:33Really hard to get the ball into Verts or into McAllister.
40:36This time, Subozai does put a really good ball in there.
40:39Again, Gakpo not busting the gut to get in there and cause those Burnley defenders' problems.
40:44And this one, if you look at the two players on the back post, you've got to get across your players.
40:48You've got to get in there with intensity.
40:49It didn't happen.
40:50Miss kicked the cross, Robertson, and then Verts, little snapshot.
40:54Second half, a lot better.
40:55He made the changes.
40:56He obviously spoke to them about this at half-time because Conor Bradley was getting in there from the minute one with big runs.
41:03He's a big lad.
41:04Robertson, as well, was flying into the box.
41:06You can see the intensity's different.
41:08You can see the numbers in there.
41:10I still like Eketike to be more central.
41:12And he was for the majority of the second half, to be fair to him.
41:14His instinct is to come in to get it to feet, so sometimes you need other players in there.
41:19And the more the game went on and the more Burnley got tired, the spaces got a bit bigger.
41:26As you can see, getting in a bit behind here, Eketike is in the right place, but the ball doesn't come.
41:30And again here with Mo Salah, decent ball in, this time you've got plenty of players to occupy these Burnley defenders.
41:38Andy Robertson gets ahead of the back post, another full-back coming on who loves getting in there.
41:44There's Conor Bradley occupying one of the defenders and Chiesa should score.
41:48It's a brilliant, brilliant cross in.
41:51And then they get the penalty from another cross.
41:54It was the bit of luck they needed.
41:57Probably edged it just about.
41:59But you're right, Burnley really made it tough for Liverpool.
42:02And Liverpool, to be honest with you, great that they've won four without playing well.
42:06It's a sign of really good things to come.
42:08There's still a lack of fluidity and there's some relationship building to be had in the front areas of the pitch.
42:15Mohamed Salah scored the penalty, even on a slot said he wasn't sure that it was necessarily going to go in.
42:20Possibly, Theo, because it was a far below-par performance from Mo Salah.
42:25Has the drop-off this season been a cause for concern or should it be a cause for concern going forward for Liverpool?
42:31Yeah, do you know what? There's been a lot of talk of Mo Salah and his influence in matches as well and how subdued he's been in certain periods.
42:38But for me, I look at his output and the habits as a winger with always making the right decisions.
42:43And his first instinct for me is positive.
42:46He's in the right spaces, doing the right things, probably a little bit out of character,
42:50putting his, you know, swinging his right foot through that.
42:52But we're talking about getting Eketike involved.
42:55And this is what we like to see with Mo Salah when he gets out on the wing.
42:58He always likes to start on the wing, of course.
43:00And this is what we're talking about, his speed, his physical output.
43:04Yeah, it didn't quite happen for him, maybe he could have got a corner here.
43:06But it's the habits I'm talking about, which we always like from Mo Salah.
43:11For me, look right now, he's in good shape.
43:14It's just the habits I'm talking about, where last year, probably slow it down,
43:18but it's just a bit out of character.
43:19So I'll just say the final decisions and, you know, the decision making in the final third
43:23is probably his biggest weakness at the moment in time.
43:25But look, he goes out wide, he takes his man out here.
43:27And I would just say it's just not quite happening.
43:31It's probably not on him here.
43:33It's all the right things again.
43:35But, Danny, when you look at a player who is maybe not playing to his ability,
43:40but still not shying away from the ball for me, because I've been in this position before,
43:44he puts in some good areas, some balls, of course.
43:46But I wouldn't be worried at all if I was a Liverpool fan right now,
43:50because I look at Mo Salah and this is the best one for me.
43:52I mean, this is all about Mo Salah, the pace and the power.
43:55This isn't a player that's subdued right now for me.
43:57No, I agree physically he looks really sharp and really good.
44:01I think technically he's a bit off.
44:03You know, everything was coming off from last year.
44:05All the assists, they're picking the right pass at the right moment.
44:07I agree with you, final decisions.
44:10But when a player is in great physical condition and he looks hungry and sharp,
44:14the goals are going to come, the goals are going to come.
44:17Liverpool had the opportunity to play around with different forms of attack
44:22throughout the course of that game, particularly in the latter stages.
44:25And while Mohamed Salah's numbers have dropped off,
44:27both of you are saying this isn't a cause for concern.
44:30But it's how that mix is going to work when they add in another big signing in Alex Isak.
44:37Well, I think Isak is going to start more of the games as a striker than Eketike,
44:41because he's more rounded.
44:43I mean, Eketike's done great and he's a younger player who's learning.
44:45He can play different positions.
44:47So, Isak's bright in terms of his link-up,
44:50so I think that'll help one or two of the others around him as well.
44:52But it's just so nice for the manager to have all these options.
44:56They're probably going to play over 60 games this season, or hopefully.
45:00And we know with five subs now that it's not just about who starts.
45:03We're talking about 60 minutes, 70 minutes, throwing on Eketike and Gakpo,
45:08or throwing on Chiesa and Vert, whoever it may be.
45:12But I think when Isak gets fit, it would be naive to think he's not going to start in
45:17that position and everyone else around him will play off him.
45:20And maybe those late changes are what have led to so many late goals for Liverpool.
45:24Arnaz Slott said in January last season,
45:26what I'd really like us to do in the second half of the season is score more late goals.
45:29I'm fairly sure he didn't mean to set that out as a blueprint for the rest of this season.
45:33But it's happened in all four games so far.
45:37The 83rd minute or later is where the winning goal has come.
45:40For me, it just shows that the squad is doing all the right things, the substitutes.
45:44At times you think, should I go out there and warm up?
45:46Should I be ready?
45:46But they are ready and they're ready to make an impact.
45:48Because you see at times with players that are really struggling to put their shin pads on and
45:52not ready, they're always ready to make a difference.
45:54Or shulking.
45:55They don't have shulkers there, it doesn't look like.
45:58And it also comes back to the point that you made right at the very beginning, Danny,
46:02which is that it was a really good defensive performance from Burnley.
46:06Scott Parker said before this game,
46:08it's a very different Premier League than the one that Burnley were in last time they were here.
46:11Is it also very different Burnley from the last one that was here?
46:14Oh, completely different than what Vincent Kompany's Burnley was trying to do.
46:18I still think at times Burnley are going to have to be a bit braver and they'll pick their games to do that.
46:23Second half at Man U, they had a really good spell where they played some good stuff.
46:26So he'll take the positives.
46:27They've had a hell of a start, by the way.
46:29You know, I think they've played Tottenham away, they've got Liverpool at home, Man United.
46:35That's a hell of a start for a new...
46:36And lost by late penalties in the last two games against Manchester United.
46:39Yeah, which have been avoidable, which they'll be sitting there tonight,
46:42probably some of them watching is thinking, you know,
46:45we had a great opportunity to get a scalp today.
46:48But there's a lot of hope for the new teams who've come up.
46:51I think they're all making a fight of it. It's going to be interesting.
46:55They could change the pattern, couldn't they, this three that come up?
46:57Is it because of their resilience?
46:58I think so. I think there's no signs of, obviously, Burnley have been keeping a lot of clean sheets,
47:02of course, but they're going to have to score a lot more goals.
47:05Now, Liverpool and Manchester City will be in European action this week.
47:12The UEFA Champions League is back on the BBC.

47:56And if you've missed any of the action this weekend, both Match of the Day programmes are available on iPlayer,
48:02alongside highlights of every Premier League game.
48:07It was a busy Saturday with eight matches. Here's what happened.
48:14What a goal by Martin Zubimendi.
48:17Early cross in, Gaffares.
48:20Crossout's first touch off the bench with a delicious cross in.
48:25It's three and Zubimendi has a second.
48:28Cemenyo.
48:30Scots.
48:34Deep cross is a good one.
48:36Karouma's over.
48:39Evan Nielsen.
48:40Oh, is he caught?
48:42He is.
48:45Antoine Cemenyo.
48:46There goes Volta Marder.
48:53That is just the right way to please your new fan base.
48:59This is Grealish.
49:00This is Grealish.
49:03Keith.
49:04Great save, Martínez.
49:08Lukic with the corner.
49:10And he went for it.
49:11Oh, it's in!
49:12Fulham have won it!
49:14An own goal from Gabriel Goodmanson.
49:22Richards.
49:24Uche.
49:24And Kamada from distance and Rufus has got to that one too.
49:30And the header from the far post, from Pat Matarzaa.
49:43Forward by Spence only as far as Socek, who in stretching for the ball, catches his opponent.
49:48Straight red card.
49:50Romero sending it forward.
49:52Bergval!
49:53Oh, it's brilliant!
49:53And it's 2-0!
49:57Alenia into Bergval.
49:59Score of the second goal.
50:02It's three!
50:03Mikli van der Ven.
50:05And it gets worse and worse and worse for West Ham.
50:09Henderson.
50:10Now, if that reaches Chandra, he's in.
50:12It's a brilliant ball.
50:14Kevin Chandra for Brentford.
50:17And into the net!
50:18Quentin Fernandes all in.
50:22And Parma!
50:23Well, he's taken that brilliantly.
50:26The shot comes in from Caicedo.
50:28And he hammers Chelsea in front.
50:32Brentford throw.
50:32Well, Shada can launch them.
50:36And that could go anywhere.
50:37It's gone in!
50:39Fabio Carvalho is equalised for Brentford.
50:45Theo, there was lots of chat about Arsenal's winger
50:48on last night's Match of the Day.
50:49But it seems silly to have you here and not talk about Nani Madweke.
50:53Because you go back to before he was signed.
50:56There was a petition that was signed by 5,000 people.
50:59He was one of them, right?
51:00I don't know if he'd been one of them.
51:02It was more than that signed when he signed.
51:06I never want to say that anything that happens in an online poll
51:10is reflective of a wider fan base.
51:12But there was a sentiment that maybe he wasn't the right signing for Arsenal.
51:16It's sickening, yeah.
51:17That was amazing.
51:18You know, when you have a player of his abilities,
51:20and England International we're talking about as well.
51:21Super talent as well.
51:22Yeah, having your own fan group against you just shows the character he is,
51:26because he's completely proven a lot of people wrong at this moment in time.
51:30Like, Madweke is playing to his strengths.
51:32He's playing with freedom.
51:33He's obviously got the confidence at this moment in time.
51:35And everything I like about wingers when I used to play was how positive they used to be,
51:41and how direct, and they just didn't overthink things.
51:43And he is starting to go back to that way of playing.
51:47And I think it's Mikel Arteta's allowing him to have that freedom again.
51:51I think he needs it as a player.
51:52He breathes off that freedom.
51:55I would like to see a few more goals in him.
51:57I'm sure it will come, of course.
51:58But he's so much more comfortable on this right-hand side.
52:00But, of course, he has Bakayosaki he's going to have to deal with.
52:03But it's these situations here where he just slows it down.
52:06He chops defenders.
52:07And when you're playing against people like this,
52:10and when I've experienced playing against defenders,
52:12that just, you don't give him a respite at all.
52:15And he's that type of player.
52:16And that's the great thing of Arsenal.
52:18There are all these options.
52:19But Madweke, for me, is so much more effective on that right-hand side.
52:22But his biggest problem is battling Bakayosaki,
52:24not just for Arsenal, but for England.
52:26And you look at his stats as well.
52:27He's ranked in first and touches the box.
52:30A chance to create his crosses yesterday.
52:31This is a dual's one.
52:33He's a strong player.
52:34And I think he's going to be a massive factor for Arsenal going forward this year.
52:37I really do.
52:38Their strength in depth has really improved.
52:40I mean, they were a good squad anyway.
52:42And now with him and Eza and Jocares,
52:46they're going to be a real challenger for Liverpool.
52:49I think they can play a mix of any three or four of them
52:54and still be a really hell of a good, dangerous side to play against.
52:58So it's positive signs for Arsenal.
53:00Positive signs for Arsenal.
53:01Positive signs for Noni Madweke as well.
53:04Let's take a look then at the Premier League table,
53:07because there are also positive signs for Arsenal there.
53:09They're in second place.
53:10But the leaders' Liverpool perfect start continues.
53:13Manchester City have climbed eight places.
53:16They're into eighth.
53:18Manchester United have slipped down to 14th.
53:21It's their worst start to a top flight season for 33 years.
53:25Burnley remain above the drop zone on goal difference.
53:28And it's time now to reveal the result of August's goal of the month.
53:45Traditionally, in reverse order, we start with Rio N'Gamoa,
53:50with 11% of the votes in second place for 21% of the votes.
53:56It's Richarlison and the winner, with a huge 44% of the vote,
54:02is Dominic Soboslai's goal.
54:04Let's take a look.
54:09Straight run.
54:10Oh, it's in.
54:12He's found a way.
54:17Absolutely magnificent from Dominic Soboslai.
54:21He got just the right amount of curl and put it in just the right place to beat Raya.
54:29I don't want to hear keeper from either of you two for that goal.
54:32It's taken 44% of the votes.
54:34Thank you very much to Danny and to Theo.
54:37So, Arna's rare to leave it late in Lancashire.
54:39And Manchester is blue again.
54:40Good night.
54:42Go, Arna.
54:55Go!
54:55Woo!
