00:00You know what, I do this sometimes, actually probably more often than I'm going to admit, but sometimes I want to share something that feels, it feels personal, and it's something that might be a little bit awkward for me to say out loud, but I'm going to be honest with you.
00:22There are moments when I am so overwhelmed by how good God has been to me, I'm so thankful for his grace, his patience, his protection, and the quiet ways he has carried me through things no one else really knows about.
00:42That I find myself saying at times, God bless you, to God, and I'm like, wait a minute, you just asked God to bless himself, is that even appropriate?
00:57So I pause, because, you know, part of me thinks that sounds strange, God is the one who blesses us, what's the point of asking God to bless himself?
01:12But God is the source of everything good, he doesn't need my blessing, and yet it feels right, it feels pure, it feels like gratitude spilling out of my soul, because there are no better words available, and I've wondered, is this wrong, or is this actually something holy?
01:40And the answer is, what you feel in that moment is not confusion, it's actually connection.
01:51When your heart gets so full that language starts to overflow, that's not theology talking, that's love talking.
02:02You are not trying to give God something he lacks, you are responding to what he has already given you.
02:10You aren't trying to elevate him, you're overwhelmed by him, and that is worship in its truest form.
02:21We have been trained by religion, television, and society, sometimes even without realizing it, to think that prayer has to sound impressive, that worship has to be polished with ceremony and ritual, that faith has to be expressed with the right vocabulary.
02:46But scripture shows us again and again, that God is not drawn to perfect words, he's drawn to honest hearts.
02:56You know, before we had churches, and the Catholic Church, basically, to tell us how to pray and what to pray for a given circumstance, they have a book of prayers, you know, and you have a saint for every reason, and a prayer for that specific season.
03:14But David didn't.
03:15But David didn't have any of that instruction, and he danced before the Lord until his clothes were almost falling off.
03:24Hannah?
03:25She prayed so deeply that her lips were moving, but no sound came out.
03:31Mary wept at Jesus' feet, washed them with her tears, and dried them with her hair.
03:43Blind men shouted, lepers cried out, children praised.
03:49None of it was elegant, none of it was refined, but all of it was real.
03:58And Jesus never told someone to love him less loudly.
04:02He never said, you're thanking me in the wrong way.
04:07You know, he never said, your praise is poorly worded.
04:12I don't find that anywhere.
04:15He corrected hypocrisy.
04:17He corrected pride.
04:19But he welcomed messy, emotional, awkward, sincere devotion every time.
04:27So, when you say, God bless you, what you're really saying is, God, you are good.
04:36God, you are holy.
04:39God, you deserve honor.
04:44And in scripture, blessing is not only about receiving something.
04:48It's about speaking goodness.
04:51To bless is to acknowledge what is good, what is holy, and what is worthy.
05:00So, when you speak those words, when you ask God to bless himself in the biblical sense,
05:09you're declaring his goodness, you're declaring his goodness, not supplying something he lacks.
05:16Psalm 103 tells us, bless the Lord, O my soul.
05:23And David wasn't trying to improve God.
05:26He was stirring his own heart to recognize him.
05:31That is exactly what we are doing in this case.
05:35When we ask God to bless himself by saying, Lord, God bless you.
05:43We bless God because we bless God because our hearts can't contain how much he means to us.
05:56Jesus said, out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks.
06:02You don't stop to analyze.
06:05You don't plan it.
06:07It just comes out.
06:09God, God bless you.
06:12And what comes out in that case is gratitude.
06:17That tells everything you need to know about what lives inside of you.
06:24Gratitude is one of the highest expressions of faith there is.
06:28Gratitude says, I see you.
06:32I remember what you've done.
06:34I am not numb to your goodness.
06:38It says, even if I never get another thing, what you've already done is more than enough.
06:48So, you know, so many people only come to God when they need something.
06:54Heal me.
06:55Fix me.
06:55I need money.
06:56I need this.
06:57I need that.
06:59Provide for me.
07:00Me, me, me, me, me, me.
07:02But when you come to God just to appreciate him, that's the difference between using God and loving God.
07:12And here's why it feels so good.
07:16Because your spirit is recognizing something holy before your mind can even label it.
07:22That warmth, that warmth, that peace, that emotional release that you feel, it's not silliness.
07:31It's connection.
07:33It's intimacy.
07:35It's the nearness of God meeting the honesty of your heart.
07:42God is not.
07:43God is not fragile and he's not offended by imperfect language.
07:48He's not waiting to correct your grammar.
07:51He is a father who delights when his children speak to him honestly.
07:56Finally, a loving father does not reject a child because they say, I love you in a clumsy way.
08:05We treasure it as parents.
08:08There is something deeply beautiful about wanting God to be blessed.
08:12It means you don't just want what he gives.
08:16You want him.
08:18You don't just want the miracle.
08:21You want the love of the miracle giver.
08:25So, the next time that feeling rises up in you, don't suppress it.
08:32Don't overthink it.
08:34Let it flow.
08:36Let gratitude become prayer.
08:38Let love become language.
08:43Because sometimes, the most powerful worship doesn't sound religious at all.
08:50In fact, it has nothing to do with religion.
08:55It sounds like a heart saying thank you.
08:59And sometimes, that thank you sounds like, God bless you, God.
09:09And that is not wrong.
09:13That is love.
09:17God bless you, my friends.
09:21Bye-bye.
