00:00Sports Radio 610 presents Seth Payne and Sean Pendergast.
00:05We coming to 8th time. Let's get to working, man. Let's go.
00:08Great day. Great day. Oh, give me some juice, my man.
00:12Oh, yeah. Let's do it.
00:14At the 43-yard line, first and 10, handoff Warren, and he's down.
00:19At the line of scrimmage, 16 seconds to go.
00:22I'll do it.
00:22They're not going to snap it again. It's over in Pittsburgh.
00:25The Texans pound the Steelers on wild-card weekend, 30-6, and move on to the divisional round.
00:35D'Amico Ryan's 3-0 on wild-card weekend.
00:39Houston at New England next week.
00:44There it is. There it is.
00:48The Houston Texans.
00:49The party continues from last night, 30-6, the final score, 7-6 going into the fourth quarter.
00:56And then the Texans' defense did what they'd been doing all night, but just added points to the whole mix.
01:01Two defensive touchdowns in the fourth quarter for the third straight year.
01:07The play, at least, at least, the divisional round.
01:11As we welcome you in on a reaction Tuesday here on Payne and Pendergast.
01:16I'm Sean Pendergast. He is Seth Payne.
01:17What a night last night, man.
01:18This was just an incredible display by the Texans' defense.
01:24My goodness.
01:26The way in which they just completely smothered and suffocated that entire Steelers' offense.
01:33That was, and this is a team that's already put together, they had already put together two of the best three defensive performances ever,
01:44or at least in the next-gen stats era, in the wild-card round.
01:49The Texans, in the previous two years, had two of the top three defensive performances by EPA ever.
01:57And then last night, they surpassed it.
02:00So, like, they surpassed the Browns game from two years ago.
02:06They surpassed the wild-card game from last year.
02:09And then last night, that was just an absolute destruction of an offense that, even though Aaron Rodgers isn't what he used to be,
02:18they still did some things pretty well, and they did none of them well.
02:22It was incredible.
02:23That was just beautiful to watch.
02:24Yeah, well, if you watched, if you, I know a lot of you did, if you're just waking up,
02:28if you watched that Sunday night game from Week 18, the Steelers did some good things offensively in that game.
02:35You know, they scored 26 points in that game against a Ravens defense that was pretty damn good in the second half of the season.
02:42And I think that's what, there were a lot of people, as kickoff was approaching for that game,
02:47they're on that Steelers bandwagon.
02:49And I know the countdown crew, there were five people on the set.
02:54Four of them picked the Steelers last night right before the game.
02:58So, there was, there did seem to be some sentiment that, hey, probably once, Seth, you get a look at the crowd,
03:04and you're reminded that it's Pittsburgh, and it's a blue blood, and it's going to be a crazy, insane environment and all that.
03:10It felt like the sentiment was starting to sway, even though they were favored by three points,
03:14starting to sway against the Texans last night, and the Texans, I am so glad that game was on Monday night
03:21so that the rest of the country could get a reminder of what this defense was.
03:27And it was really nice.
03:29You and I have been talking about this for four weeks now, about how upset by D'Amico Ryan's standards
03:33he had seemed with the defense.
03:36Because whatever the messaging was throughout this week, and however much the last four weeks of,
03:43by Texan standards, kind of average to below average, by their standards.
03:47By their standards.
03:48By their standards.
03:49I know by regular team standards, it was still really good.
03:51But D'Amico and the Texans have a really high standard.
03:54Whatever the messaging was this week, it got through 175 yards of total offense.
03:58Honestly, this was probably the best display of ever.
04:02If you're ever a fan and you're watching television or listening to the radio and you think,
04:07oh, these so-called experts, this is what happened to the so-called experts.
04:11They succumbed to all of the propaganda about it being a cold weather game.
04:16And they simultaneously forgot just how good the Texans' defense is.
04:24And that was enough.
04:25Because the gambling still understood that the Texans were the favorite and should be the favorite in this game.
04:32But the, oh no, C.J. Stroud and the cold, et cetera, et cetera.
04:36And some of that was borne out.
04:37Like, God, some of that's...
04:38And we'll get to that.
04:40Yeah, yeah, look, hey, but on the sum total of it all, and this is why, I mean,
04:45last night's going to be really interesting to talk about for the rest of the week
04:48as we also transition very quickly tomorrow into talking about the hated Patriots.
04:53Yeah.
04:53But the Texans had 408 yards of offense to the Steelers' 175 yards.
05:00The Texans offensively converted 10 of their 15 third downs.
05:05Yeah.
05:05Well, the Steelers converted 2 of 14 on third downs.
05:08Yeah.
05:09The offense, but for some absolutely horrendous, just disgusting turnovers by C.J. Stroud,
05:19was really, really good.
05:20Really good.
05:20But we can't have those turnovers.
05:24If you're going to ride the defense to a championship, the one thing you can't do is have bad turnovers.
05:30And they gave all the propaganda, the Texans said all the right things about not treating
05:37this any different than a normal game or anything.
05:40And, man, C.J.'s the guy that out there really looked like he succumbed to just trying too hard.
05:45He was pressing.
05:46Pressing too hard.
05:47Yeah.
05:47He was pressing.
05:49And it wasn't just the turnovers.
05:51Boy, that missed throw to Nico Collins right before the half.
05:55Yeah.
05:55It might have been a touchdown.
05:57Yeah.
05:57It might have been a touchdown.
05:57If you show, they show the all-22, not the all-22, but the behind-the-quarterback view
06:02of it, there's nobody on that side of the field.
06:05So, yeah, I mean, honestly, at the same time, I'm saying, man, it's so frustrating because
06:12C.J. did some really good things in that game.
06:14Some great things in that game.
06:15They were a machine right up until he threw a wrench into the gears of the machine.
06:20Yeah.
06:20Three times.
06:21Yeah.
06:21Yeah.
06:21They won 30-6, and they probably should have won 47-3.
06:27I mean, it was that dominant a performance.
06:31And on top of that, and we're going to hear from D'Amico here in just a second, they might
06:34have retired Aaron Rodgers last night.
06:36Oh, 100%, Sean.
06:37They might have retired.
06:38The talk, and you know I've been listening on Pittsburgh radio all week, you know, last
06:42week and over the weekend and yesterday, and I listened in this morning, and whoever the
06:46morning host is on our sister station up there has fired Mike Tomlin 10 times before
06:51breakfast this morning.
06:52Um, the talk was not only in Pittsburgh, but around the league, like maybe Aaron Rodgers
06:58comes back for another year with the Steelers.
07:00Um, they were following Aaron Rodgers around last night after the game on the broadcast.
07:06Like he was walking to his own funeral last night.
07:08And the way they were talking on the broadcast, it sounded like maybe, maybe Aaron Rodgers
07:14divulged some things to Joe Buck and Troy Aikman.
07:18It sounded, to hear those two guys talk, this was going to be it for Aaron Rodgers.
07:22And Sean, I told you, I was on the field when Dan Marino played his last football game
07:26ever, uh, when we beat them in the playoffs.
07:29Yep.
07:29And, uh, there was like, you could, was it, was it similar?
07:33Did it have a similar?
07:34Yeah.
07:34It was like, okay, there's no coming back from this.
07:36Yeah.
07:36Like this guy, there's no way in hell this guy wants to try to make another run of this.
07:39Plus Marino would have had to leave teams, you know?
07:42Yeah.
07:42Um, Rogers is already, he's already been through that.
07:46He'd be willing to, but man, it's hard to want to play football again after a performance
07:52like that.
07:53It's crazy how good this defense is, man.
07:56And I'm, and I'm, I was trying to, you know, I'm, I'm sitting there going, okay, who are
07:59the stars defensively?
08:01And I'm going through, I'm like, everybody, everybody, everybody made a play at some point
08:06in this game.
08:07Sean, I know I was, I know I was furiously adding audio to the show prep before this game.
08:13I have a Colin.
08:14Do you happen to have the Emmanuel Acho, uh, clip ready yet with Kalen Bullock?
08:19Colin's got it.
08:20Yep.
08:20Okay.
08:21Let's play.
08:22This is, I mean, this is, I'm, I just, I love these guys so much, Sean.
08:25I love them so much.
08:26I love every single one of these defensive players so much.
08:29I love make one Jones.
08:30Yeah.
08:31I didn't even know who he was.
08:33He stole, he stole your number and you won't make one.
08:37I love him.
08:38I love him.
08:39Yes.
08:39All right.
08:39Nobody's ever done that in a number 91 Jersey before.
08:42So this is on the nightcap or I mean on the, uh, speakeasy podcast with Emmanuel Acho.
08:46They were talking with Kalen Bullock, uh, in the lock.
08:49They, they had him on it via zoom in the locker room.
08:52Um, here's Emmanuel Acho asking, uh, Kalen Bullock, who's the biggest killer on the defense?
08:56Who the biggest killer on the defense?
08:58Who the biggest killer on the defense?
08:59We don't all say ourself.
09:00Everybody's going to say theyself.
09:01If you talk to anybody, they're going to say, I'm the biggest killer.
09:04Like we, I seen Kamara, hey, this first person off the bus is going to pop that.
09:07Oh, I added an extra bleep in there.
09:17Kalen only swore once.
09:18He did.
09:20I accidentally left that extra, or did you play a Colin?
09:23If you added that, thank you.
09:25Um, cause I, I might've missed it.
09:27Thank you for not making us go all Aaron Rogers on the FCC.
09:32You're back.
09:33Yeah.
09:33Sean, I love them so much.
09:35Yeah.
09:36I've never felt this.
09:37Hey, I've gotten married.
09:39I had a kid.
09:40I haven't felt love like this.
09:41I get it.
09:42I get it.
09:44No, it really is.
09:46It is almost like that feeling.
09:47You know, after you have your first child and you're like, oh my gosh, I never knew love
09:52like this existed.
09:53Right.
09:53I just, what is this feeling within me?
09:56That's how I feel about the Texans defense.
09:58Dude, it is, it is wild.
10:00And it's, it's so fun to watch a game like last night where you've got Joe Buck and Troy
10:07Aikman that had probably watched Texans football this week to get ready for the game.
10:11I would guess, but to listen to, and they've, and the Texans has been on Monday night this
10:15season already, at least once, um, that I can remember, uh, no twice, twice Seattle, but
10:21Seattle, they didn't have these guys, Joe Buck and Troy Aikman.
10:23My point, it's fun to watch guys that are, don't experience it for 17 weeks over the season,
10:30experience it, you know, like the, they're watching these guys and the Steelers, my God,
10:35the Steelers, they just kept trying to run the football man in the second and third quarter.
10:40Every time it felt like they ran the ball well early, the first series of the game.
10:44I'll tell you, Seth, I'll tell you the play where the game turned and, and we'll get to
10:48D'Amico on the defense here in just a second.
10:49I'm just so excited about this man.
10:51Cause even with, cause even with the, like with all the turnovers, like I don't feel like CJ
10:55Stroud's going to go to new England and have three horrific turnovers, like can beat anybody
11:00that's still left in this cited about this, this game turned though, on that DK Metcalf drop
11:07in the, on the third series of the game and they, the DK Metcalf, my, the notes, the thing
11:14I wrote Seth in, um, in my notes after the first two series was DK Metcalf is going to
11:21be a problem tonight.
11:22He had the 17 yard catch and run on the second play of the game.
11:25He had the 25 yard catch on the first play of the next series.
11:29He had a pass interference on the very next play.
11:32So they've run like seven plays and three of them have been some form of chunk.
11:37Thanks to the presence of DK Metcalf, two big catches, and then a pass interference.
11:43Seth, he didn't catch a ball the rest of the night.
11:45No, he dropped a ball on the second play of the next series and was only targeted twice
11:52the rest of the game.
11:53And shout out to John Harris, who in the pregame was giving the due praise to DK Metcalf and
12:00what a threat he is, but doesn't have the greatest hands in the world.
12:05And, uh, and there is something about facing this Texans defense too, that turns people
12:10into the worst versions of themselves.
12:12Yes.
12:13I was thinking about that, Sean, when you're, you're talking about people that are exposed
12:16to the Texans defense for the first time, you know what it's like, you know what it's
12:20like I, for a spectator or for an opposing offensive player.
12:24And a lot of our listeners will appreciate it.
12:27This, it's the first time you ever do high intensity interval training, uh, with the weight
12:32with weights and like, you know, when sprints are tough and everything like that, look, I
12:37was a hard worker in my life, lifted hard, worked out and everything.
12:42The first time, uh, Dan Riley, he was one of the first guys ever to really introduce high
12:48intensity interval training to, uh, to, to, to sports.
12:52And I, I know, uh, like everyone, all your social media influencers like to pretend like
12:56it was invented two years ago.
12:57No, Riley was doing this crap back in the eighties.
13:00So first time in my life, I went through a workout with Dan Riley.
13:03I was, I was like, I, I didn't know pain could feel like this.
13:08Uh, I didn't know.
13:09I didn't know PAIN, not P-A-Y-N.
13:11Yeah, I thought you were referring to yourself as a third person.
13:14I didn't know Zaza could feel like this.
13:15Zaza, this is a new level of, this is a new level of misery.
13:20This is awful.
13:21That's what this defense is.
13:22Yeah.
13:23It's a new level of misery and, and teams aren't ready for it.
13:26They think they are.
13:28Right.
13:28They think they're like, Oh yeah, whatever.
13:30No big deal.
13:31Hey, ah, then these guys let up a bunch of points to the Colts or something.
13:35I read in a box score.
13:36So you don't know, you don't know what you're about to endure.
13:40Do you, these guys are savages.
13:42Do you agree with this texter Patriot fans were watching that game and are now scared
13:47to death of the Texans defense.
13:48That's Patriot fans.
13:50Yeah.
13:50How do you think the Patriots feel watching that game last night?
13:53I think the Patriots, uh, a would never say it out loud, but they a hundred percent wanted
13:58the Steelers more than the Texans.
13:59Yes.
14:00Um, B no, look, they're, they're cocky.
14:03They've earned it.
14:04Patriots fans have, you know, Dave Portnoy, you've earned it.
14:08You won those championships.
14:09Those are your trophies.
14:11He said, yeah, he, he, he has six rings.
14:14I think I realistically looking at it from just some of the things I saw last night as
14:18I was not going to bed, like I should have.
14:22Look, they understand that Dick May is still a young quarterback.
14:25They understand that the last time Drake May saw this Texans defense, uh, he didn't have
14:30any help or anything, but man, he saw, he saw the, uh, the embryo of what this defense
14:37could be, he saw just, he, he, he experienced, you know, what he experienced, he experienced
14:43a prepubescent Texans defense and still got beat down pretty hard.
14:47Texans had a bad, like pube mustache.
14:50Their voice was kind of cracking a little bit.
14:52They're asking dudes to buy him a beer outside of a convenience store.
14:56Now they are walking in and slapping their ID down on the counter and saying, give me,
15:01give me my cold 45 beard, full beard.
15:07Yes.
15:08Yes.
15:09Um, so, so we've talked a lot about the defense.
15:13I'm not going to have a voice by the end of the show.
15:14I'm so this was a, I, Sean, I had so many awesome dreams last night.
15:20I can't wait until we play the audio of, of Will Anderson talking about the dream he had
15:24next segment.
15:25Yeah.
15:26We're going to do that next segment.
15:27Um, we've talked about the defense and in the open, we've got to talk about the offense
15:31and we, I promise you, we're going to talk about CJ Stroud and the night he had last night.
15:34Pete feelings very, very mixed on CJ Stroud among Texans.
15:38A hundred percent.
15:39So understandably you're not, you're justified in doing it.
15:42I'm going to put a, yeah, there's a, there, there was some really good things last night,
15:46but unfortunately there were some atrocious things out of CJ.
15:49Nick Haley had a great night last night.
15:52Nick Haley had a great night last night.
15:54I thought Nick Haley and Cole Popovich too.
15:57Yes.
15:57I think honestly, I like when you're, even some of those muddy pockets, it was like that.
16:05There was room to move.
16:06There was room, room to move.
16:08It was a lot of times they were facing an onslaught and exotic blitzes.
16:13And by and large, that pass protection last night compared to what you saw really it for
16:21most of the season, it was just, that was exactly what you want to see out of 10 of the guys
16:27on the offense.
16:27I'd say, I mean, those guys really stepped up and looked like a better version of themselves
16:33in the playoffs.
16:34Absolutely.
16:34We just got that one little minor, uh, uh, uh, nagging detail of, uh, quarterback being
16:41the one who needs to step up the one minor detail.
16:44Just, it's just a little, it's this nagging little thing.
16:47Um, he's gotta, he's gotta not try so hard.
16:49Yeah.
16:50He was just trying.
16:50So he's gotten so good this year at managing risk and there were just, he was sloppy with
16:55the football and, and, and trying to do things when he should have just been taking a sack
17:01dirt in the ball, whatever it might be.
17:02Yeah.
17:02The first part of being smart is knowing what to do.
17:05Appreciate that.
17:06Yeah.
17:07Nick.
17:07You're right about that.
17:08Um, so the defense, we're going to talk plenty about today.
17:11Nick Haley, the offensive line, Woody Marks, Nick Chubb, Nick Chubb, Woody Marks was awesome
17:18last night.
17:19So was Nick Chubb.
17:20Nick Chubb had 10 carries for 48 yards.
17:22The long carry on the night was nine for him was nine yards.
17:26Like he had 10 bruising teeth, rattling carries.
17:31He Seth, he ran like somebody who played the Steelers twice a year for the last decade.
17:35This Sean, I, I had never been so excited about an offense that still hadn't put up any
17:40points yet.
17:41Texans were at the point I took the notes, the Texans at the time were four of six on
17:49third downs, four of those third downs were third and three or less.
17:53Yes.
17:54And it was because they were just fighting.
17:57They were a Woody Marks was fighting for yardage and it might not look impressive, but
18:03it's that it gets you to third and three.
18:05My God.
18:06Yep.
18:06What do we say about the chiefs?
18:07Yeah.
18:08Oh, you know, the last few years, even when the offense didn't look the same,
18:11same as what it was.
18:12Well, you know what they do?
18:14They get to third and three.
18:15Yep.
18:15And, and you can convert third and three and then Nick Chubb in the second.
18:19Oh my gosh.
18:20Yep.
18:20The best version we've seen of Nick Chubb all year long.
18:23Definitely.
18:24Definitely.
18:24Definitely the best version we've seen of him.
18:26Everybody gets your electrolytes.
18:28It's going to be a long show.
18:29It is going to be intense.
18:30It is going to be fun, man.
18:31We're going to have fun.
18:32So keep it tuned right here all day long on sports radio, six, 10.
18:35Thanks.
18:37Bye.
18:38Bye.
18:41Bye.
18:42Bye.
18:56Bye.
