Reacting to Texans' 23-20 Win Over Colts

00:25Six and two, three and O in the division,

00:27five and O in the conference.

00:30They've got the head-to-head over the Colts.

00:32This was a big win yesterday.

00:34We said going into this game on Sunday,

00:36this is a chance to take a stranglehold on the AFC South,

00:39and that's what they did.

00:40They're the number two seed in the AFC.

00:42This is a, record-wise,

00:44the Texans are in a fantastic spot, right?

00:46As good a spot as they've been in

00:47in the history of their franchise.

00:48Six and two overall,

00:50and they're two games up in the division

00:51with a tiebreaker,

00:53and they've got the really fun part

00:56of the schedule coming up now,

00:58with a lot of primetime games coming up.

00:59A lot of primetime games,

01:00and as you know before the season,

01:02it never shakes out quite the way it looks

01:04in the preseason rankings,

01:06and the Jets right now do not look like

01:09what they were hoping the best version

01:11of themselves would be.

01:12They've got, look,

01:14but they still have a defense that features

01:16a guy that concussed C.J. Stroud.

01:18They do.

01:19They do.

01:20And so, Quentin Williams still walks and breathes.

01:22That's, and C.J. Stroud mentioned that

01:23in the postgame.

01:24There's nothing the election is gonna do about him.

01:25They can't.

01:26You can't vote him out of office.

01:28And your incumbent left guard,

01:30he's still possibly gonna be there.

01:32We don't know.

01:33Still a problem, yeah.

01:34So, a lot to dig in this Texans game.

01:37Look ahead to the Thursday night game

01:38coming up against the New York Jets

01:40and the way the schedule shakes out for the Texans,

01:42but I said going into the season,

01:43the first eight games,

01:44I viewed that as a chunk of the schedule for the Texans.

01:47The most manageable part of the season for the Texans,

01:50and while they have sent us to the infirmary

01:53with heart trouble many, many times

01:54throughout these first eight games,

01:56they are six and two right now.

01:57This is the short-term concerns, obviously.

01:59It's a short week.

02:01You've got an offensive lineman in Jared Patterson

02:04who stepped in and looked good on a touchdown drive.

02:07And the only long touchdown drive of the day.

02:10I thought I screwed up a name or something.

02:13Jared Patterson comes in.

02:14They score a touchdown,

02:15except Jared Patterson gets a concussion.

02:17He sacrificed his brain for that touchdown.

02:20And then, immediately, a green came back in.

02:22Not Kendrick Green, but Kenyon Green

02:25went back out there,

02:26and I thought played better in the second half.

02:29They did some things to protect him a little bit,

02:30but look, last year,

02:32Drew Scruggs was playing left guard.

02:33He got bulldozed into C.J. Stroud,

02:36concussed C.J. Stroud.

02:37You still feel very uneasy about the left guard position.

02:40I don't think Patterson's gonna play.

02:42I don't know if they'd try Kendrick Green

02:44as opposed to Kenyon Green,

02:45but there's some very real,

02:48literal and metaphorical headaches

02:50going up to New York facing that defense.

02:52So, as long as we're on this topic,

02:54because, as we know,

02:55this game last season in New York

02:57was the one where C.J. Stroud

02:58got concussed by Quinnen Williams, as you pointed out.

03:01The big story for the Texans

03:03coming off of the Green Bay game

03:04was how C.J. Stroud was chased around all day long

03:06in that Green Bay game.

03:08Pass protection didn't feel great.

03:09It felt better than Green Bay,

03:10only because it couldn't have been worse

03:12than it was in Green Bay.

03:14How do you think they played?

03:16How do you feel about the way

03:18they're playing on the offensive line right now

03:19heading into Thursday?

03:20I feel like they're still botching

03:22some of the simple things.

03:24The, any kind of stunts or movement.

03:27There's just somebody being flummoxed.

03:30There's times where it's a tight,

03:31I mean, Sean, there was a play yesterday

03:33where Kate Stover,

03:34who did some really good things in the game,

03:36but Kate Stover and Teagan Catoriano

03:40are gonna double team a defensive end.

03:43Neither of them even touched him.

03:44He ran free.

03:45He just decided to run around the obstruction,

03:48which was two pretty large human beings.

03:50And like, we just still see so much of it,

03:54or too much of that.

03:55That's my biggest concern.

03:57And that's not the rail on Kate Stover or anything.

03:58He had some beautiful blocks in that game.

04:01There's just, there's more,

04:02Kenyon Green is the one who looks

04:04the most physically inept right now.

04:07The offensive line as a unit

04:09is just still too disjointed,

04:11just not moving in sync with each other,

04:14not on the same page.

04:15That's my concern versus Jets.

04:17Yeah, the Texans are getting it done with defense, man.

04:20Like, they're six and two.

04:21And all these games that have been so close at the end,

04:24the only one, the only one that I feel like

04:26was the offense kind of taking control

04:29and winning at the end

04:30was the Jacksonville game in week four.

04:32And the defense needed to get five punts

04:35in the second half of that game

04:36to get the offense the ball enough times.

04:39I don't know that I can remember two straight home games

04:42where you've had a quarterback throw

04:43for 30% completion percentage.

04:45I know.

04:46And a lot of passes.

04:47Josh Allen was nine for 30 in week five.

04:51And they come back in week eight.

04:52It's looking incredible compared to what we saw yesterday.

04:54And Anthony Richardson was 10 for 75 yards.

04:58And 69 of those yards came on one play.

05:00People have had it with Anthony Richardson.

05:02I've searched long and wide to find an Indianapolis,

05:06to find a Colts fan defending him,

05:08taking himself out of the game yesterday.

05:10So for those of you who missed it,

05:12he just took himself out of the game.

05:13He was tired.

05:14He was tired.

05:15There's a receiver that just ran a deep route.

05:17And he's like tapping.

05:17There's a guy that you can see hasn't played

05:19a whole lot of actual quarterback in his career

05:21because he's been injured so much.

05:23He played just about a dozen games in college.

05:26The quarterback took himself out of the game

05:28because he was tired.

05:29He was tired, yeah.

05:30Brought it to Joe Flacco.

05:31I was more nervous with Flacco.

05:33So Joe Flacco had to come in and hand the ball off.

05:36On third and 15.

05:37Yeah.

05:38Okay, the other.

05:39I love that Tiki Barber's reaction to that was hilarious.

05:44It was like any middle-aged guy

05:46trying not to grumble too much.

05:58The big story, one of the big stories

06:00coming out of this game will be,

06:03and is, Stefan Diggs' injury.

06:04Stefan Diggs leaves the game in the second half yesterday.

06:08Didn't look good.

06:09Non-contact injury.

06:10We've got no news from the team on it.

06:12The tone of the people with the team right now

06:15is not, doesn't make me optimistic.

06:17Just some of the things they're saying about it.

06:18Do you find yourself reading into CJ's statements

06:20a bit much?

06:21Like what level of prayers he's throwing out?

06:23Yeah, yeah, because we.

06:24It's like DEFCON level to his prayers.

06:26Yeah, yeah, this felt like,

06:28one is the really bad one, right, on DEFCON?

07:03I don't anticipate seeing him on Thursday.

07:08We've seen people come back from the concussion protocol

07:10for a Thursday night game.

07:11There was a quarterback that did a few years ago.

07:14And I'm not, I'm uneasy about it.

07:16There's nothing about me that wants to see

07:20like Patterson come back from a concussion.

07:22Diggs, yeah, I'd be surprised.

07:25So what does this look like now?

07:26What is a, at least for one game,

07:28what is a Diggs-less, Nikko-less offense?

07:31I mean, that final drive before the drive,

07:34it was just a really nice drive down into the red zone

07:36before the fumble.

07:37They spread the ball around.

07:39You got multiple people involved.

07:41We saw Xavier Hutchinson and John Mechie show up.

07:43You know, Mechie's been,

07:45we're getting an increasing diet of John Mechie

07:48in the last couple of weeks.

07:49That final play against the Packers,

07:52if CJ had trusted his pass protection

07:55enough to work through his reads,

07:57he had John Mechie in the end zone.

07:59He just, by that point in the game,

08:01CJ was just trying to get rid of the ball

08:02to the open receiver.

08:04But that's, it's trite,

08:07but you gotta, everybody else gotta step up.

08:09It's the, you gotta spread the ball around.

08:11You gotta get your tight ends more involved.

08:16Was it yesterday that we were talking about coming up?

08:52heading to New York on a short week.

08:53I had forgotten about this

08:54when CJ was doing his interview.

08:56Somebody asked him like,

08:57hey, so what do you think,

09:00what's your plan here for the short week?

09:02And CJ's like, I don't know.

09:03I've never had one of these before.

09:05You know what?

09:06It's weird.

09:07There's a lot about Thursday night football

09:09that's difficult.

09:10You have the short turnaround.

09:12You're out there during warmups

09:14kind of reminding yourself,

09:16all right, I'm about to play an NFL football game.

09:18There's large humans that are gonna try to hurt me.

09:20I gotta, let's get going.

09:21You gotta really talk your way into it

09:23because the process is different.

09:25But it is kind of nice because the week leading up to it,

09:27it's short, but it's all mental.

09:29You're out there, you're doing walkthroughs, jog throughs.

09:32There's very little actual exertion.

09:33And you got a little mini bye week on the end of it.

09:35Yeah, yeah, no, and they need it.

09:38Yeah, you can pay your utility bills and everything.
