00:00Hello and welcome to the start of your Wednesday evening live on The One Show with Gethan Jones
00:16and Angelica Bell and tonight's show is guaranteed to help banish the January blues as we bring
00:22you comedy stars Dawn French and Marquise some inspirational tips to kickstart your
00:27new year and Matt is back fighting for your consumer rights in the first watchdog of 2026
00:33yes Storm Goretti is on its way so you may now be thinking about a summer escape to somewhere warmer
00:40millions are booking holidays this month so I'll be telling you about some customers left high and
00:45dry after things went wrong with a holiday rentals platform plus the company using people's personal
00:52details without their consent great lots of fantastic advice to come and as we mentioned
00:58we'll be joined by two sitcom superstars best known for their hilarious performances in the Vicar of
01:04Dibley and Friday Night Dinner and now Dawn French and Marquise have teamed up to play husband and wife
01:09in Can You Keep a Secret it's a new BBC comedy airing tonight about a retired couple who get caught up
01:16in a world of crime a secret is out tonight and if there's one man who'd uncover them in a heartbeat
01:22it's crime fighting clergyman father Brown ahead of the new series which returns this week
01:28we head behind the scenes to find out how the drama is being brought to life with the help of the
01:33community in Blockly also coming up he's interviewed some of the world's most successful people from
01:38Matthew McConaughey to Serena Vigman and now a broadcaster and best-selling author Jake Humphrey
01:43is using his insight to share how their small everyday habits could help transform your life
01:48and they're not as hard as you think one man always making a difference to people's lives
01:52is Matt he is here with Watchdog and he's starting with a story that will be of interest to millions
01:58of people ah thanks Kev yeah after years of having been missold car finance many drivers across the UK
02:06could be due compensation now but if you're thinking that's got nothing to do with me think again
02:11because we're hearing from some viewers whose personal details are being used by a claims
02:17company whether they've made a claim or not imagine being shown a signed contract with your name on it
02:26that you've never seen before that's exactly what's happened with some drivers who've been sent
02:32contracts by consultation claims a company that promises to represent motorists in claims for
02:39missold car finance but those we've spoken to say not only have they not provided the signatures in
02:45these documents but they've never even spoken to the company before in October Mike from Northern
02:53Ireland got a contract and this email thanking him for signing up with consultation claims they had all my
03:00details date of birth my phone number my address everything and said that I'd actually electronically
03:07signed these documents which I've never seen before how did you respond to that I started to think where
03:14the hell have we got all this information from what's more there's one simple reason why Mike's not
03:19eligible for any car finance compensation I've never had a car on finance why would I sign up to anything
03:25like that despite never having car finance Mike could still be out of pocket that's because a
03:32termination fee applies if the contract is cancelled 14 days after it was signed a fee of 166 pounds for
03:42every hour the company works on it to sort it out but they want to charge for you to cancel it how can
03:48you prove it if they've got these documents that say you've signed this you've signed that there's
03:54something not right here unlike Mike Jane from Bristol has had car finance and is making a claim
04:01directly through BMW despite that a contract arrived complete with the signature that was not Jane's
04:08the contract entitled consultation claims to take up to 30% of her payout I have absolutely never signed
04:17anything why should I give them my money online reviewers of the company say they too have had
04:24claims submitted without permission using documents they've never signed so we took a closer look at the
04:31paperwork in the contracts the consultation claims provide they include an IP address your IP address effectively what
04:41they're saying is this must be your signature because it came from you but cyber security expert Graham Stewart says the IP address
04:50numbers provided aren't adding up says we looked at those IP addresses and they don't relate to anything to do
04:57with either the email address or the device so these numbers you feel have been randomly generated yeah that means
05:05that they mean nothing correct from a technical point of view absolute nonsense with IP addresses
05:12we can't ID and unrecognizable signatures on documents people have never seen these contracts lack credibility but legal
05:22expert Denise nurse told us that people could be legally bound to these contracts if those named in them don't challenge
05:29them so they're not to be taken lightly I mean the temptation is just to rip it up and ignore it I totally
05:36understand the temptation however the right thing to do to protect you is to take action so first of all
05:42contact the company and say I don't know anything about this please can you confirm that this is not me and
05:49cancel it I would secondly contact the relevant authorities because if your signature is being purported onto a legal
05:57document then that is very serious our case studies believe that this is what's been happening if someone
06:05falsifies a document with the intent of misrepresenting something we're straying into something that's
06:11unlawful activity and can have very serious consequences for the perpetrators consultation
06:17claims said that after an investigation it found the issues had been caused by the actions of another
06:23company that supplied it with customer information the claims company apologized to customers affected
06:30and said it was taking steps to put things right and prevent it from happening again consultation
06:36claims you promise to get money back for people who are owed it but many of the people we've spoken
06:42to say they never got in touch with you in the first place so here's a promise for you unless you
06:49start doing this thing right we won't let it lie do you know what it's really scary to think you can be
06:56signed up to something without your knowledge i know right uh there is some very good news for mike
07:00and jane since we wrote to consultation claims both have received 150 pounds in compensation and most
07:06important the firm will not be contacting them again that's the first watchdog winner of the year
07:11everyone we can guarantee plenty more in 2026 if you've got a problem and you'd like us to investigate
07:20email watchdog at bbc.co.uk or tag us at bbc watchdog on the socials now as i said storm garetti is on the
07:28way so it's no wonder that january is one of the busiest times for holiday bookings for so many people
07:34it's the thing that you get booked in so that you have something to look forward to for half of the
07:39year isn't that right gary well yeah it's a bit gloomy this month isn't it just a bit you're just
07:43thinking about sun the whole time and like you say something to look forward to yeah we just got to get
07:47through it well there's one company which offers plenty of private holiday homes claiming to be the
07:53perfect choice for a getaway and that company is verbo a company we've mentioned before here on
07:58watchdog as you can see by its glossy advert it's a marketplace for beautiful rental properties and
08:04to give customers peace of mind the platform offers verbo care a promise to be on call if things go wrong
08:11but when some customers discovered their holiday homes weren't legit they told us this support was
08:17nowhere to be seen angelica tell us what happened to hannah and her mates okay hannah and her friend
08:22gavin found a property to rent in greece on verbo costing 3 650 euros now the host sent an invoice
08:29via verbo's messenger service and gavin transferred the money to the named account but just eight days
08:35before they were due to stay and already on the first leg of their holiday the group received a message
08:40from verbo stating the property was falsely represented and had to be removed from the site
08:45i mean you'd be totally gutted after that yeah absolutely and here's the absolute shocker gavin then
08:50received an email saying that because the payment wasn't processed through verbo's official payment
08:56page on the website the group wasn't eligible for a refund gutted doesn't even cover it holiday ruined
09:03lost a lot of money um and subsequently the the support from verbo has been shocking we would never
09:12book with them again it was absolutely awful yeah you can tell they're incredibly upset and the
09:17thing is the invoice came through the verbal messenger so you might think you're in the actual
09:23platform yeah you would think that's where the payment was that's what gavin thought certainly
09:26and have a look at the invoice it's really convincing looks like it comes from verbo but
09:32unfortunately for gavin it was a fraudulent invoice verbo told us payments should be made
09:37directly through verbo.com because this payment was made outside of the platform directly to the
09:43host they say they're not covered by verbo care geth tell us about russell and joanne from york
09:48russell and joanne from york booked a house in sydney for a family trip through verbo they paid a deposit
09:54of eighteen hundred pounds to the hosts a couple of months before the trip joanne could no longer see
09:58the listing on verbo and was finally told by the host that the booking was in fact cancelled when she
10:04asked verbo about a refund it told her to contact the host and then her credit card provider joanne
10:09says no further support was offered and at no point did verbo inform her the listing had been
10:14removed so a close call for joanne there i mean there's a chance that she and the family could have
10:18gone the other side of the world to australia and found the accommodation wasn't there big question
10:23is here did she get her money back well luckily for joanne and russell the bank refunded them
10:29personally i'd want it the other way around verbo sorts it failing that the credit card or your
10:35charge card if it's a debit card charge back then uh is your backup since we got involved i'm pleased
10:42to say verbo has reimbursed hannah and gavin their and their mates the 3650 euros verbo told us it's
10:50sorry it takes fraud seriously it says and continues to invest in technology to eliminate fraudulent activity
10:56the good news is both property hosts have now been suspended from the platform if you are using
11:02verbo this is the lesson or any other booking platforms don't be tempted a way to pay from the
11:08site otherwise you may not be covered in the case of fraud and always pay on a credit card if you can
11:14bit of protection yeah great result matt thank you so much flying start to the year
11:18seldgum tonight uh broadcaster jake humphrey will be telling us what he's learned from interviewing some
11:24other world's most inspiring people but first we're speaking to comedy stars dawn french and mark
11:29keep about their thrilling new bbc sitcom which starts tonight and follows the story of a man called
11:34william through a bizarre turn of events he is mistakenly declared dead but he's actually just
11:40hiding in the loft a mishap that sparks a comedy of errors that soon sees uh soon sends him tumbling
11:47into a life of crime now before we welcome dawn and mark let's take a look
11:50can you keep a secret dad it turns out i hadn't died the money from your dad's life insurance
12:00finally came through please this is fraud you have to give the money back what sort of friend
12:06blackmails their own mates we're a crime family oh don't be silly we're just a bit complicated
12:11like the beckons and joining us now is mark keep and dawn french
12:19dawn and mark we love it it's brilliant it's very funny it's a sitcom with a bit of thriller thrown
12:29in there and you both play a husband and wife debbie and william so tell us about how
12:32how you come together and have got into this dodgy situation well um you know this is a very odd
12:43ball family um and they find themselves in the middle of this terrible sort of fraud they don't
12:48set out to find it actually it happens to them his character is declared dead by a very incompetent
12:55doctor and then an incompetent funeral director and so it just so happens that it would suit them
13:02to claim the insurance now we know this is morally wrong isn't it it is morally wrong but it suits their
13:08purposes and also this character his character william um has parkinson's and um our writer's dad has
13:16parkinson's and so um you know i didn't know that you sort of get shafted really by by insurance
13:23companies when you have parkinson's and so she i think my character debbie feels that this is
13:29retribution really and that it's justice that they can claim this money although of course it's wrong
13:34i know but you you really want them to have the money in a way it's so it's so bizarre it's like
13:41the corleone's and thing you can you find yourself watching tell you're watching you have breaking
13:44bad they've got the main guy you think oh this is what he's doing but you think oh come on i hope
13:48you know yeah you kind of end up rooting it gets worse and worse though from the family dynamic
13:52point yeah you've got craig robertson mandip gill who are playing your son and daughter-in-law
13:56then all of a sudden they're involved and then it's the most extraordinary family dynamic
14:01yeah it is i mean they they um both of them are brilliant by the way and craig especially is very
14:08good at playing such an anxious person he's all bottled up and he just wants to say shut up you know
14:15he does it brilliantly i think debbie is a bit of an agent of chaos actually and brings
14:21everybody into this swamp of chaos with her including william who is quite resigned to it
14:27actually and she does make the point to you at the beginning that nobody would really miss you
14:35that's a sign of a good marriage for a while though he's just
14:39they've already mentioned the writer and the series were created by simon mayhew archer yeah
14:43who also wrote the bafta award-winning this country but it was his dad paul
14:48yeah you co-wrote the vicar of dibley yeah who convinced you to do a sitcom because you said
14:53you would never do no way yeah you said no never i said it would be very unlikely because you know
14:59good sitcoms are rare aren't they and you know i've been lucky enough to do a good one and i've been
15:04involved with jennifer's sitcom as well you know and i just thought oh well that won't happen again
15:08again and um and paul bullied me frankly i mean he i said convinced you said yes yes okay yes no
15:17it's definitely bullying okay um and he he sent me an email and he said look you know i know i'm supposed
15:22to go via your agent and all of that but i'm old now and i've got parkinson's and you should read this
15:27and it's my son who's written that and i had met his son many years before um and he said and this is
15:32the first time he's written a sitcom he's produced them before but um uh i thought oh no now i'm gonna
15:39have to read this i'm gonna have to make that embarrassing sort of phone call with the notes
15:43that explain why i gently carefully diplomatically can't do it um and then i read it and it's really
15:50good and i thought oh damn i can't see you doing that you just go nah no thanks no i can be kind
15:55can you i'm not kind to you ever but i can be that works in the sitcom uh you touch there on on paul and
16:02his parkinson's diagnosis he's been very open about it and william your character lives with the
16:08conditions yeah but you play it with so much humor and so much heart paul mayhew archer does himself
16:15and between them they're almost like a comedy double act about parkinson's and so a lot of what i'm doing
16:20is what is the the writer's view of his dad and having to deal with his dad and they between them
16:28quite extraordinarily good humored about it they don't sugarcoat it at all they're quite savage
16:33with each other really so about it and paul you know has made light of it he's taken shows to edinburgh
16:40he does a podcast about parkinson's he's the most cheerful person with parkinson's you could ever
16:45hope to me and he's very realistic about it but i think simon is writing about his own family's
16:51experience and it and you know they cut through the nonsense really i mean it's not a documentary
16:56about parkinson's by any stretch it's just incidental that he's got parkinson's quite early
17:00onset parkinson's so it's not the really really nasty stuff but um but he doesn't show as a character
17:06it's great because you know you use that for your own ends you put yourself oh i can't do that
17:11because of my parkinson's all right you know it's a bit of pity yeah we had sort of permission permission
17:16to do that yeah it's in the script anyway so yeah yeah you kind of have to you can't go no i'm not
17:22doing that i mean i think simon has written about both of his parents to be honest yeah yeah and a lot
17:28of this show is about the the son harry that craig plays um who really is sort of simon who is trapped
17:36in a sandwich between two mad parents who are sort of incompetent incontinent people and literally
17:44two children that are also incompetent and incontinent he's in a sort of mad sandwich and
17:51he's very anxious about all of it and so that that's really where the heart of it is
17:57we've been told to read hours don't we yeah let's get on with it oh okay
18:00do you want to mark sitcom can you keep a secret starts tonight at 9 30 here on bbc one
18:05and our player when all the episodes will be available it is brilliant can you keep a secret
18:10oh you can trust me i'm no traitor oh got traitors on before you what a lineup on bbc one but before
18:18all of that uh still to come on the one show tonight jake humphrey will be sharing the secrets to
18:22stick into your new year resolutions as he tells us how small everyday habits can make big changes but
18:28first this next film may take dawn back to her vicar of dibley days as we've been given an exclusive
18:34behind the scenes look at father brown ahead of its return this week yes mark williams reveals how
18:38the show's magic is created from the music right down to the smallest prop as the local community
18:44help bring the drama to life every summer a film crew sets up camp in the cotswolds village of blockley
18:52welcome to kemberford it's the fictional setting for the bbc detective series father brown starring
19:01mark williams good morning chief inspector how can we help loosely based on a series of books by gk
19:08chesterton this is the 13th year the village has opened its doors and his church to the priest with an
19:15uncanny knack for solving crimes that's saint mary's in our stories but he's actually since peter and paul
19:23and i'm not the real vicar canon de lapp is the incumbent here it's a real buzz to have them here did
19:32have somebody once say to me you can't be the priest here because you're not father brown we do make the
19:39place look untidy that's for certain that is absolutely each episode takes just over two weeks
19:46to film which is great for villagers like nikki from the local cafe during the time that they're
19:53here it creates lots of excitement for the village i'm not saying it's always easy because you know
19:57blockley's quite a small community certainly for us it creates good good trade the series is set in 1953
20:06the cast get their 50s makeover at father brown hq which has set up camp on the outskirts of the
20:12village siraka cusack who plays mrs mccarthy father brown's no-nonsense parish secretary is getting into
20:19character i do like her it's because she's she's opinionated she's rather like me actually have they
20:28been feeding you properly father i think you've lost weight and feeling better for it it's the job of
20:35costume designer ann rudd to make sure the outfits look authentic we've got mrs mccarthy there inspector
20:42sullivan this is father brown this is the cassock that he's worn a lot and was inspired at an early
20:51age i can't really remember a time when i didn't love clothes i mean my mum doing this show is great
20:57because it reminds me of my mom and she used to make all her own clothes and all of mine i started
21:04trying to make things myself about six or seven on her sewing machine it probably is in my dna
21:11now they look the part the actors are preparing for the first take of the day first of all we will
21:16go through the lines then we'll decide when we're going to stand what we're going to do
21:20then we show to the crew and then the crew will come in and do their stuff so the whole thing's in
21:24in very collaborative in a sort of military way as well as the actors there are over 150 crew working
21:32behind the scenes including production designer martin bodison who has to make sure nothing modern
21:38ends up in shot we have these little things called what we call cover-ups which we take with us
21:43everywhere and always very useful for hiding things like that the music plays its part too from our home
21:50studio composer debbie wiseman writes the score the music is another character in father brown
21:55it's telling the story alongside the characters and i get very excited when i get a new episode
22:01oh what are these they're savory what's going on in the character's mind are they searching for clues
22:11they scared you scroll symbols on the window shutters are they feeling romance or love that's what the
22:20music is doing at its best back in blockley actor tom chambers who plays inspector sullivan
22:27is catching up with the locals they've become friends you really don't mind us being here in
22:33in your beautiful village and for father brown fans it's a treat to see the cast and crew in action
22:41we're from newcastle we love mark williams and they're all here so yeah it's very nice indeed
22:47we're having a fabulous scene it's a cherry on the top seeing these actual filming you weren't expecting
22:52that at all the new series promises plenty of intrigue a seaside adventure and there'll be some famous
22:58faces joining the cast i got rid of you once before then i can get rid of you again all right that's
23:06enough for you lot lurking around our set if you want to know who done it you'll have to watch your
23:11television enjoyed that it's amazing to see how everything comes together so good father brown returns
23:18with a brand new series this friday at two o'clock on bbc one and i play it where you can watch all
23:22the episodes time now to introduce our next guest is broadcaster and best-selling author jake humphrey
23:31high performance the podcast it goes from strength to strength where you interview some of the most
23:35inspirational people around the world you and damien hughes of course um from usain bolt to
23:41professor uh brian cox um is it when you when you have these conversations you would say there's one sort of
23:47theme that comes through from all these high-performing people yeah i think that the thing that comes
23:51through um actually having spoken to a lot of people is that i used to believe and i started the
23:56podcast way back in 2019 thinking that to do what we want to do in life we have to take huge leaps in
24:01certain directions we have to completely change our life right to change our life but then we've spoken
24:06to hundreds of people who've basically told us that we kind of we think too much about the outcome
24:12in the motivation and we don't think enough about the daily habits and so as we've spoken to all
24:16these guests over 400 over the last six years on the podcast we've realized that actually it is about
24:22the tiny insignificant daily things that we do that we almost don't even notice um that makes
24:27the difference which is where the books come from and i feel kind of bad really sitting on this show
24:31talking about the book because it's like it's a self-help book for people that don't read self-help books
24:35because the stuff in it is so simple you'll read it and go that can change my life i don't believe it
24:40but it does well it's called micro habits and i think it's quite timely because january is the
24:44time of year where we we reset we want goals and we want to be a better person you know all these
24:48sort of things but you say that these micro habits can help with that yeah absolutely because the way
24:52the human brain is wired and by the way i know like you guys i'm a former kids tv presenter i didn't
24:57start off knowing this stuff but i sat next to an amazing guy called professor damien hughes for the
25:01last six years on the show and he sort of explained to me that the human brain tries to conserve energy as
25:07much as possible which is why so often in life you think did i just put the washing on i did it on
25:12autopilot because the brain is trying to conserve energy so actually it's kind of hard to change the
25:17way that you live your life because your brain is always looking for the shortcut you've always done
25:20so the way to change your brain and therefore change your life is to create habits micro habits
25:25which is what the book's called that are so small and so insignificant that they there's no added
25:30friction to the brain but actually the way the place you end up at the end is is so different to where you
25:35start and you pick up a habit that's probably good for you be very personal i'd imagine yeah is there
25:39one that you've seen or heard over the yes 400 interviews we think that's actually had a huge
25:45impact on your definitely i called um shane parish who's an amazing thinker from the united states and
25:51we had him on the show a couple years ago and at the time my life looked really good i was hosting
25:56champions league and premier league football i had a couple of businesses that i'd created hosting the
26:00podcast two amazing kids hi guys um but i felt overwhelmed and i felt unhappy and i didn't
26:06really know what was going on and i said this to shane you can hear it on the podcast and he said well
26:12what really matters in your life like what what do you need for you and i said well number one time
26:17with my wife harriet number two time with my kids flo and sebastian who are watching right now and number
26:22three a little bit of time each week for myself just i don't know go to the gym or walk the dog or
26:26something and he said great well uh show me your diary let me see where those things are in your
26:31diary and i was like well they're not in my diary because i love them so much i make sure they happen
26:35and he said well are they happening and i was like no and that was why despite my life looking great it
26:41didn't actually feel very good and what he explained to me was those things are important but life is full
26:46of urgent stuff and the urgent will always kick the important to the side so his advice was at the start
26:52of the week look at your diary find three or four places that you can just chat to harry
26:56it or be with the kids or walk the dog or have a game of paddle and that tiny thing that almost
27:03looks like nothing has been transformational for me and the the book's packed with those kinds of
27:06lessons from guests do you have any micro tips i would like i think i would need someone to tell me
27:13you know what you know you know you're doing that yeah well that was what the book will do i will give
27:18you a copy so but like a person can you come around and say why are you doing that or tell my wife why is
27:25she doing that right so you want me to come to your wife come to your house and tell your wife i
27:30think that you should need to sort that out in your own diary you just told me i can play more paddle
27:34which is the best part of it yeah jake and damon hughes's book micro habits tiny habits that
27:40supercharged high performance is out now that's all we got time for this evening thanks to all our
27:44guests and of course to matt with watchdog tomorrow jb and i will be joined by actor rebecca ferguson
27:49plus denise welsh will be here with waterloo road talking about it see you then bye
