00:30Hello, everybody. When it comes to game shows, no prize more noble than the Countdown Teapot.
00:38And while we're not changing the world, hopefully we're putting a smile on your face every afternoon.
00:42How are you doing, Rich O'Reilly? Very well. How are you?
00:45Yeah, good. Now, on this day, back in the day, the Nobel Prizes were established.
00:50Now, physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and peace.
00:55And it's been that way ever since.
00:58But this is a brilliant rabbit hole story because we all know Alfred Nobel, right?
01:03We know that. And he set it up. Most people watch him do.
01:06Chemist, engineer, industrialist. But how did it happen?
01:10Anyone know? No, right. I didn't either.
01:13Boys and drinking, I would go with. That's my guess.
01:16No, but a very sobering moment. I'll take you back to 1888.
01:21And Nobel died. And his obituary was published in a French newspaper.
01:27And as he read that obituary, because he hadn't died, his brother, Ludwig, had died.
01:34And they'd mixed them up.
01:35Now, what a moment that is, when you're alive, to have somebody appraise what you've contributed to the world.
01:41And he decided he hadn't contributed enough.
01:44So his fortune, of which it was back then, moved rather contentiously away from family members.
01:51And he set this up, which to this day.
01:52So he funded it. And then from their sponsorship came in.
01:55And actually, the prize money's varied, but it's still significant if you win.
02:00But imagine that, changing your life because a newspaper had written your obituary.
02:05Should we write you one, Cole?
02:06Yeah, good. Please, no. Don't tempt fate.
02:08He was all right.
02:09Yeah, exactly. You wouldn't have to pay much, would you, for the little ad in the paper.
02:14Loved Countdown. Gone.
02:16Right. Let's head over to Dictionary Corner.
02:19If there was a Nobel Prize for ruining Countdown contestants' dreams, there would only be one winner every year.
02:26That would be our Susie Dent.
02:27And alongside her all this week.
02:30She's the Queen of Craft.
02:32She's the Queen of Dragon's Den.
02:34She's the Queen of Business.
02:36We could go on.
02:37It's Sarah Davies.
02:40We have two new contestants to meet tonight.
02:43Please welcome Jane Bates.
02:45Now, if you're looking at your screen and you're thinking,
02:48if I met her somewhere, I clocked it because I was, but still am when they show it,
02:54a huge fan of Come Down With Me.
02:56Loved the voiceover, loved the humour, loved the competition, the psychology of it.
03:00You were hugely successful.
03:02That's why I recognised you. Tell me about it.
03:04Well, I was very successful thereafter as well because I won by cooking on my oven plank, as I called it.
03:12The steak.
03:13The steak.
03:14And then launched it as a business because everybody's saying, where can you get one from?
03:19Well, we made it, you know, in the back garden.
03:21It was just a piece of oak.
03:22Sold them all over the world.
03:24I love that, Jane.
03:25Let's hope you enjoy Countdown as much as you did Come Down With Me because you were brilliant on that.
03:29You're up against Chris Kirby, who joins us from Widness.
03:33How are you doing, sir?
03:34Yeah, I'm good, Colin. Thank you.
03:35Now, you're another, you know, we obviously, our last octo champ was Helen, who was a new mother.
03:40You're a new father, just five months old.
03:42But forget Beatrice.
03:44Let's talk about your buddy.
03:45We both have buddies.
03:46We called our dog Buddy, both of us.
03:48But yours is a great story of mistaken identity.
03:52Yes.
03:52So we were told that he's Lazarus Absol, crossed with Bichon.
03:55Tiny?
03:56Yeah.
03:56So he kept growing to, like, double the size he should have been.
03:58So when he DNA tested, I thought he had sort of different breeds in him.
04:02It turns out he's Poodle, crossed with Maltese, crossed with Border Terrier, Wheaton Terrier, Jack Russell, Pug.
04:09Wow.
04:09So just a mongrel, basically.
04:11Right, brilliant.
04:12So you've got seven dogs for the price of one.
04:14Well done.
04:15Love the Buddy.
04:15Love the Chris and Jane.
04:16Let's play Countdown.

05:37Leopard.
05:38And leopard.
05:39Yes, very nice.
05:40Well spotted indeed. Really good start. Two challenges today.
05:43Such a different dynamic. Sarah?
05:45We had leopard. We also got prowled for seven.
05:49But then we found an eight, so we've got poleward.
05:52Yes, so if you're headed towards the North Pole or the South Pole,
05:55you are headed poleward.
05:57You are poleward bound.
05:58Exactly.
05:59Go on, Chris. Good start. Let's have more letters.

08:43And then 7 plus 4 minus 10 is 1.
08:46Lovely.
08:47And take it away. Well done.
08:48Excellent.
08:49APPLAUSE
08:50Well, a nice start for Chris. Long way to go for Jane,
08:53as we get this tea-time teaser, which is sank reds, sank reds.
08:57It's Barry sank the reds, but Justin focused on the black.
09:01Barry sank the reds, but Justin focused on the black.
09:05Welcome back. Love this clue.
09:22It's snooker and music mixed together.
09:24Barry sank the reds. That's Barry Hawkins, the hawk, and Justin focused on the black.
09:29The black Justin Hawkins from the darkness, the answer is darkness.
09:34Well, listen, if you believe in a thing called love,
09:36Jane's going to get some points very, very soon.
09:39But, Chris, permission to get more letters.
09:43Can I start with a consonant, please?
09:44Thank you, Chris.
09:45A final consonant, please.
10:11A final P.
10:13Now, let's play.
10:43How many, Chris?
10:45Eight.
10:46Jane?
10:47I'll try an eight.
10:48Excellent. Come on, Chris.
10:49Arousing.
10:50Is it the same, Jane? Are we aroused twice?
10:53No, we're not.
10:54We're not?
10:55I've got poor-ings.
10:56Plural.
10:57Come on, let it be there.
10:59Oh!
11:00No.
11:01No.
11:02Oh, I'm so sorry.
11:03It's not there as a noun that you could put the S on to.
11:06Mm-hm.
11:07I'm sorry, Jane.
11:08Sarah? I mean, the P's there, anything else?
11:10We couldn't beat arousing.
11:12Erm, that's the only eight we got.
11:14There you go.
11:15We will go again, then.
11:17And, Jane, it's your letters.

11:45And another, please.
11:46Q.
11:48Oh.
11:48Er, another consonant, then, please.
11:52Thanks.
11:53Lastly, T.
11:54And start the clock.
11:55rapidement was made of the form.
12:06Why won't we escape from the grocery store?
12:10They'll get out of time.
12:17And another vowel, please.
12:18Please, take out.
12:19Help me up.
12:24Get that door.
12:25Bye.
12:25And that's time, Jane. Eight. Eight from you. And Chris? Eight, not written down.
12:31Chris, what's yours? Questing. Questing. And what have you got, Jane?
12:34Questing. Pass it over there. Yeah. Is it in? It is in. Well done.
12:39Great to get Jane on the board. Chris has had a crack and start.
12:4440 plays eight, second numbers round. And Chris, you're in charge.
12:48Can I have an inverted T, please? You can indeed. One from the top and five little coming up.
12:53These five small ones are nine, ten, four, nine, five,
13:00and the large one, 75. And the target, 488. 488. Numbers up.
13:23All right, 488. Chris Kirby? Just 489. One away. Jane Bates?
13:30Well, I think I've got 485, but I might be wrong.
13:34Well, hopefully we don't have to find out, cos Chris has only one away.
13:36Off you go, mate.
13:3875 plus five. 75 plus five is 80. And then ten minus four is six.
13:45Yep. Times them together.
13:47480. And then add nine. Yep, that gets you to one above.
13:50489.
13:51Brilliant. But can you go one better?
13:54You're going to have to leave it with me.
13:56Good timing. That's why the numbers are where they are, cos off the back of that we get to have a chat with Sarah Davies.
14:02We've got the Wednesday. We haven't talked Dragon's Den, which continues to be popular, continues to evolve, both from the Dragon's point of view and, of course, what's coming in there.
14:25So, new series filmed, ready to go?
14:27We are all in the can, as they say in telly. In the can, it'll be out in the new year.
14:32Right, what's happening? What can you tell us? What can you not tell us? Cos you might get in trouble more than the point.
14:38You want us to spill the beans, don't you? So, do you remember last series we introduced guest dragons for the first time?
14:43Yeah.
14:44So, we just shift all the chairs along and make a bit of a space and get a sixth chair in.
14:49They do it over in the US in Shark Tank and we thought that looks like a good idea.
14:52So, we've had more guest dragons this year. So, last year we had Gary Neville and Emma Greed and we brought Emma back over again this year and we had Joe Wicks come in this time and Trini Woodall.
15:03So, it was great cos I got a bit of a makeover when Trini was in, you know, with all of her make-up and Joe Wicks decided he was going to take me out running.
15:10So, whenever we're filming dragons, we're filming Manchester and I try and use the opportunity for the routine to go out running every morning, you know, just to get into the routine of it.
15:18And Joe had seen me running on my Instagram and he messaged me and he said, oh, I see you did a PB this morning. Brilliant.
15:25How about tomorrow morning when I'm in, I'll take you with us and we'll knock a minute off that.
15:29Well, I'd just literally knocked a minute off my 5K PB. So, he dragged me round the streets of Manchester at 6 o'clock in the morning in 26 minutes and 18 seconds.
15:37Wow.
15:38Which was an eternity faster than I've ran before. It's amazing what you can do when Joe Wicks is running up behind you shouting, come on, you've got this.
15:45So, I come in, right, Joe Wicks is there and I go, got this new type of running shoe, right, for example, that's crazy, but imagine it was that.
15:53What's good for you as a shrewd, shrewd business person, when Wicks goes, that's great, that's the bit where you go, I'm going to outbid you.
16:03No, I tell you what we do, it's quite clever this, wait till Joe makes an offer and then point out all the business acumen you have, why you might be a good person to go in on that offer and then say, I'll share.
16:15That's what we had, and we had dragons fighting over, who got to share with Joe Wicks for one of the, er, can't tell you anymore, I'll have to kill you.
16:24Yeah, well, it's the same on Countdown, you can kind of do the same when it comes to nine letter words, eight letter words, just give Susie a tap, I'll come in on you with that.
16:32We'll pretend we, we'll pretend we both got that.
16:35Works great for me.
16:36Yes, absolutely, just the business, thank you so much.
16:39Right, just before we get back to the letters,
16:44was that enough time to do 488?
16:46It is, I'm not giving you anything though, not even 5%.
16:49No, I can't get anything.
16:50If you say 75 minus 4 is 71, 10 divided by 5 is 2, 9 minus 2 is 7, times the 7 by 71 for 497 and you have a remaining 9 for 488.
17:05Brilliant.
17:08And just like that we can switch back to the letters now, Jane.
17:11Er, consonant please.

25:32MUSIC PLAYS
25:51Jane?
25:53A six.
25:54And for you, Chris?
25:55A seven.
25:56The six is?
25:57Closet.
25:58What have you got, Chris?
25:59Coldest.
26:00Coldest.
26:01Very good.
26:01At SAS, what have you got?
26:03We also have foisted for seven.
26:06Foisted.
26:07As we're about to get another Origins Awards foisted upon us and we love it.
26:12Well, thank you to Christine Woolley, who emailed us on the usual address,
26:16countdown at channel4.com, where our viewers can also apply to come on,
26:21which we would love.
26:22Anyway, Christine asks,
26:23please could you explain where some of the expressions for looking comes from,
26:27or a look, like a gander or a deco and that sort of thing.
26:31So, it's quite an interesting subject, so I'm going to give it a go.
26:35When we're having a gander at something, we might be leaning over to look at it,
26:39and that's probably the image behind it, because it's a bit like a goose,
26:44and a gander is a male goose, craning its neck.
26:47And that is exactly where we get craning our necks from, the long-legged, long-necked bird.
26:53So, we think that is having a gander.
26:56We also have having a butcher's, of course, which is rhyming slang, butcher's hook, having a look.
27:03And deco's a really interesting one.
27:04So, this is probably a word that travelled back with British soldiers from India,
27:08along with many, many others.
27:09And they will have heard the Hindi word deco, look, and, you know,
27:15and then subsequently brought it back and made it into a sort of slightly different expression to have a deco.
27:20But it used to be an instruction, look, deco, in Hindi.
27:24Lots of other words, as they say, came back with the soldiers,
27:27like blighty, dulali, shampoo, a host of other words, but deco was one of them.
27:33And just to finish with butchers, it was quite interesting when I was looking at this one,
27:37because rhyming slang, as you know, emerged as a code,
27:40a sort of secret jargon, really, among costumongers in 19th-century London.
27:45Well, in Australia, rhyming slang has really, really taken off,
27:48so it's alive and well, and they're always coming up with new combinations,
27:51so a flower is a cobra shower, for example, and that kind of thing.
27:54And to have a butcher's in Australia is actually, or to go butcher's,
28:00is to become really, really angry.
28:02So they've given it a new slant, because it's rhyming slang for crook.
28:06In other words, you're bent out of shape.
28:08So if you go butcher's, it's something very different from having a look
28:12and actually just going ape, as we would say.
28:18Right, Chris, let's get more letters.

32:51Good stuff.
32:52Well, they might be called Jane and Chris,
32:53but we knew Jane was on thin ice from very early doors in this episode
32:57because Chris could be the real surprise of this series.
33:01But we're not done yet, Jane.
33:03Chris can't double the score and more in this final round.
33:06You can.
33:07So let's see what we can do.
33:08Fingers on buzzers.
33:09Oh, right, yeah.
33:10Let's reveal today's Countdown Conundrum.
33:16Chris.
33:17Ambitious.
33:18In two seconds.
33:19And so he should be.
33:22And so he should be.
33:25Because you look for that little gap in the performance,
33:28that little weak spot that you could exploit.
33:31Not numbers, not letters, not conundrum.
33:341-2-1.
33:36For a debut win in the teapot, Chris Kirby.
33:38APPLAUSE
