00:30Hello, everybody. It's Friday afternoon.
00:33Welcome to Countdown as we add another episode
00:35and extend our world record run
00:38for any TV show of its kind on the planet.
00:42And, Rachel Riley, welcome on what is Guinness World Records Day.
00:47Is it?
00:48Yes. And, of course, we're part of that.
00:50Yeah.
00:50With the length of this show.
00:51So I thought we haven't had one all week.
00:53Friday quiz time.
00:54Okey-dokey.
00:55I'm going to give you a world record
00:56and then you have to decide whether it's higher, lower,
00:59longer, shorter, whatever the case may be.
01:03So let's do it.
01:04In 2021, Croatian Budimir Sobat broke the world record
01:08for voluntarily holding his breath.
01:11The time I'm giving you is 12 minutes.
01:14What?
01:14But was the world record higher or lower?
01:1812 minutes holding your breath?
01:20I mean, you kind of go on the psychology of what number you've given me,
01:24but you don't think any human could have done it that long.
01:26It's going to be higher, but I'm going to say lower.
01:30The record is 24 minutes, 37.36 seconds.
01:37What?
01:38Wow.
01:39American...
01:40I know, crazy.
01:41Catch your breath, let alone hold it.
01:44Nick Stoburl, a.k.a.
01:46The Lick, from Monterey, California,
01:49holds the current Guinness Book of World Records
01:51for having the longest tongue.
01:54I'm saying his tongue is 9.2 centimetres,
01:59but do you think that the Lick's tongue is longer or shorter?
02:06Longer.
02:06Longer, Colin.
02:07I'm going longer.
02:08It's 3.97 inches, which is 10.1 centimetres.
02:13You're right to go longer.
02:15Imagine the damage he could do to an ice cream.
02:17He could get his tongue the whole way round it.
02:20Yeah, being part man, part chameleon.
02:22Wow.
02:23I imagine the flies he can catch.
02:25There you go.
02:26Let's head to Dictionary Corner, then,
02:27and let's say hello to our G of the D, Susie Dent.
02:30Making her last appearance of her debut week,
02:32she's been a hit all the way.
02:34It's Clare Richards.
02:39Vera Silam is back with us for a final time for now.
02:43Win or lose.
02:45Seven wins.
02:47But maybe a little bit of nerves today?
02:49Yeah, I mean, obviously, the eighth game.
02:51Yeah.
02:52Yeah.
02:52The worst one to lose, right?
02:54Yeah, probably.
02:55The worst one to lose.
02:56Well, I feel like I've unsettled you enough,
02:57so let me introduce the man who's hoping to turn your dream into a nightmare.
03:01It's Daniel Green from London.
03:03How are you doing, Daniel?
03:04I'm on the wrong day.
03:05Well, let's talk about lightning striking twice, because you were on this show how many years ago?
03:12Twenty-four.
03:13Twenty-four.
03:13Twenty-four years ago.
03:15That was series 42.
03:16But you were beaten by Michael Calder, who won series 42.
03:20Yes, I've got a history of coming on the wrong days.
03:24Wow.
03:25I do feel for you.
03:26But, hey, the bigger they are, the harder they fall.
03:28So let's see what happens.
03:29Good luck to Daniel.
03:30Viraj, good luck to you.
03:32APPLAUSE
03:33Here we go, then.
03:35Deep breath.

04:15And that's time.
04:40Viraj.
04:41I'll stick with a seven.
04:42There's seven there.
04:42And Daniel?
04:43Seven.
04:44Seven as well.
04:44What have we got?
04:45Pirated.
04:46And Daniel?
04:47Partied.
04:48Partied.
04:49And parated?
04:50Pirated.
04:50Yeah.
04:51I think, yeah.
04:51Oh, OK.
04:52Pirated.
04:52Well, you said it wrong.
04:53Can't give you the point.
04:54I'm a joke.
04:55That works.
04:55It's still spelt the same way.
04:57Pirated.
04:57Pirated copies of records.
04:59What have you got for us?
05:00We've got readopt and parotid.
05:03Yes.
05:04And a parotid gland is one of the salivary glands.
05:06So all sevens?
05:07Yes, all sevens.
05:07All sevens.
05:08All right.
05:08Let's go again.

05:12Thank you, Daniel.
05:13And a vowel, please.
05:43And lastly, A.
05:4430 seconds.
05:4530 seconds.
06:13Daniel.
06:17It's a six.
06:18It's a six.
06:19Viraj.
06:19Also a six.
06:20A six as well.
06:21Daniel.
06:22Houses.
06:23Houses.
06:23Yep, the same.
06:24All right.
06:25Two save us houses.
06:26Sixes.
06:27Difficult round.
06:29Dictionary corner.
06:29We've got still sixes.
06:32Uneasy.
06:33Yeah.
06:33And housey.
06:36Housey.
06:36Yeah, that was a really good spot.
06:38House music style.
06:40So housey beats.
06:41The beat before four is housey.
06:43Okay.
06:43Nice.
06:4413 points each.
06:45As good a start as the challenger's had in a long time on Countdown.
06:49Viraj, that little bit of sweat I see.
06:51Let's find out.
06:52Let's get the first numbers.
06:53Six more again.
06:54Yeah, I knew what was coming.
06:56Three from here.
06:57Let's go three from here.
06:58And the first numbers game of the day is nine, ten, three, nine, two and six.
07:08And the target to reach 728.
07:11Seven, two, eight.
07:12Numbers up.
07:28Seven, two, eight.
07:44The target was six small.
07:46Viraj?
07:46Seven, two, eight.
07:47And Daniel?
07:48Seven, two, nine.
07:49Just missed it.
07:50Viraj, the six small.
07:52Yeah, six times nine, 54.
07:53Six times nine, 54.
07:55Plus two.
07:5656.
07:57Three plus ten is 13.
07:59Three, yeah, ten, yeah, 13.
08:01And then times them together.
08:03And times them together, 728.
08:06Nicely done.
08:07Magic.
08:08APPLAUSE
08:08Absolutely magic.
08:11Dream the difference all week.
08:1223, 13.
08:14First tea time teaser of this Friday is sound fat.
08:18Sound fat.
08:19These sound like they'll make you fat if you overindulge.
08:22These sound like they'll make you fat if you overindulge.
08:27The answer, Susie, was fondutas.
08:33I'm probably thinking some form of fondue, is that right?
08:49Yeah, it's a riff on fondue.
08:50It's melted cheese, usually Fontina cheese.
08:54It's got milk, cream, butter, egg yolks and topped with truffle.
08:57OK.
08:58Not for me.
08:59Nor me.
09:00There you go.
09:01We'll pass.
09:01We will pass.
09:02We're not melting under the pressure so far as Daniel Green.
09:05Good start.
09:0523, 13.
09:06Just the numbers, the difference.
09:08Let's go back to the letters.
09:09Ah.

09:11Thank you, Daniel.

10:17And an eight from you.
10:18Daniel, what's the word?
10:19Grandees.
10:20Grandees.
10:21And Viraj?
10:21Reasoned.
10:22Reasoned and grandees.
10:24Amazing.
10:24Both are excellent eights.
10:26Wow.
10:28What a standard.
10:30I'm guessing we're just trying to keep up at the moment, dictionary corner.
10:33Yeah.
10:33Two more eights.
10:34Grenades and renegado.
10:37Renegado?
10:37Yeah, it's just an older version of renegade.
10:40Can't put the S on because you need OES at the end.
10:42But, yeah, we'll give you an eight.
10:44Brilliant.
10:45Bucket full of eights there.
10:47Viraj, off you go.
10:48More letters, please, sir.
10:49Start with a vowel.

11:33MUSIC PLAYS
11:47Viraj?
11:48A seven.
11:49Daniel?
11:50Eight.
11:51An eight.
11:51What a moment.
11:52The seven.
11:53Marcia?
11:53You're flying with ease.
11:55Let's check it, Daniel.
11:56Emulsion.
11:57Brilliant.
11:57Emulsion, yes.
11:58APPLAUSE
11:59There you go.
12:02Pulls it back to within two points with emulsion.
12:06Fantastic.
12:06That's what we had as well.
12:07We have a game, ladies and gentlemen.
12:09Second numbers round.
12:11Daniel?
12:11Four large, please.
12:12Four large.
12:13Grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck.
12:15Good decision.
12:16Hope it pays off.
12:17Let's keep this one tight.
12:18The two little ones.
12:19Two and nine.
12:21And your big four.
12:22One hundred.
12:23Seventy-five.
12:24Twenty-five.
12:25Fifty.
12:26And to make a game of it, the target...
12:28Six-hundred and fifty-two.
12:30Six-five-two.
12:31Numbers up.
12:32Six-hundred and fifty-two.
13:02Six-five-two with four large.
13:03Daniel?
13:04Six-five-two.
13:05Verage?
13:06Six-five-two.
13:07Off you go, Daniel.
13:08Seventy-five times nine.
13:10Six-hundred and seventy-five.
13:11Minus twenty-five.
13:12Six-fifty.
13:13Plus two.
13:14Not the challenge you were looking for.
13:16Right.
13:16If you can see that one easy way, you were there quickly.
13:18Yeah, the same.
13:19Thought so.
13:20Yes.
13:21APPLAUSE
13:21Two points.
13:24Still a difference.
13:25What drama as we chat to Clare just for the last time this week.
13:29Lee, who's head of wardrobe, and myself have decided we've just massively fallen in love with you this week.
13:33Aw.
13:34Can't wait to have you back.
13:35Aw.
13:35I want to ask you, because I feel like we know each other now, so you can ask that question you wouldn't normally ask.
13:40Verage wants to work in television, so there's a little tip for him.
13:43Tell me about, like, when it all went wrong.
13:46Like, you know those days, you're in steps, where something happens, you're like, oh, I'd never want to go through that night again.
13:51A gig or something, or a concert, or...
13:53Do you know what?
13:54If things go wrong, it only ever happens to me.
13:56LAUGHTER
13:57And it is normally on tour and on stage, but one in particular, and it's on YouTube for everyone to see, if you want to check it out.
14:04So, in 2012, we had our reunion tour, and we had this genius idea of saying that we'd been cryogenically frozen for ten years.
14:15And the start of the show was us coming through trapdoors in these cryogenic chambers.
14:22The whole of the first number was inside this, the chamber, and then the second number, it was all choreographed.
14:28We'd open the door at the same time, and step out, and then go down the stairs, and then kind of bring the show to the front of the stage.
14:35So, you had all your individual cryogenic chambers?
14:38Yeah, individual.
14:39OK.
14:39Which, I mean, you could kind of see them at the beginning of the show, just at the top of them.
14:45Then we'd come up, and we'd be inside.
14:47And on this one particular night, my door didn't open when it should have opened.
14:54And there wasn't a back on these things, either.
14:57So, they were easy access to get in on the trapdoor.
15:00So, rather than kind of thinking, I'll just step out the back and go round, I was there for ages, trying to open the door, and it wouldn't open.
15:09And then all of a sudden, I just started going back down.
15:13And everybody else was out of their chamber and down the stairs, and I was just kind of sheepishly going down.
15:19And my head's still here, because it didn't go all the way.
15:22A lovely moment, though.
15:23You wouldn't want it like your first ever gig or like a showcase, but at that stage, quite funny, I suppose.
15:28No, it always happens to me.
15:30I've been caught in things, I've tripped over costumes, I've got stuck in things, I've got caught in curtains.
15:36It's, yeah, always me.
15:37Love it.
15:38Thank you, Clare.
15:41Well, that is a mere pregnant pause, because this is such a close game.
15:46Varaj has blown away all competitors for seven days.
15:50Now, he's under real pressure, and it's your letters.
15:53I'll start with a consonant, please.
15:54Thank you, Varaj.
15:56C.
15:57Another consonant.
15:59N.
16:00Another one.
16:02F.
16:03And another one.
16:05W.
16:06A vowel.
16:08A.
16:09A vowel.
16:10I.
16:12A consonant.
16:13G.
16:15Another vowel.
16:17E.
16:18And another vowel.
16:19And, lastly, O.
16:22Start the clock.
16:33That's time, Varaj.
16:55I'll go for a seven.
16:56Going for a seven.
16:57Daniel.
16:58Six.
16:58And a six.
16:59What's the six?
17:00Facing.
17:00You don't sound entirely confident with the seven.
17:04What is it?
17:04Coinage.
17:05Coinage, yeah.
17:06I mean, lexicographers talk about coinages all the time,
17:09because they are word creations, essentially.
17:11So, very well done.
17:12OK.
17:13Nice one.
17:13Clare?
17:14Can't do better than coinage.
17:15Yeah.
17:16Didn't imagine so.
17:17Really high standard today.
17:18Coinage means seven points in the bank.
17:21And, Daniel, you're in charge of these letters.
17:24Consonant, please, Rachel.
17:25Thank you, Daniel.
17:26N.
17:27And another.
17:27F.
17:30And another.
17:32D.
17:33And a vowel.
17:35I.
17:36And another.
17:37O.
17:38And another.
17:40A.
17:41And a consonant.
17:43T.
17:46And a consonant.
17:48W.
17:50And a vowel, please.
17:51And, lastly, U.
17:54All right.
17:55Half a minute.
18:26Daniel?
18:27Six.
18:28Veeraj?
18:29Also a six.
18:30The sixth, Daniel.
18:31Dacian.
18:32Dacian.
18:33And Veeraj?
18:34Also Dacian.
18:35And Dacian as well.
18:37Yes.
18:37It is the act of giving something in a legal sense.
18:41It's usually Dacian in payment.
18:43So, something other than money given to discharge a debt.
18:47Right.
18:48Very good.
18:48Claire, could they have managed anything better?
18:51Yeah, we've got an eight.
18:53Auto-wind.
18:55Yeah.
18:56You know when you have one of the old-fashioned cameras and you just have to keep winding on the film?
19:01Well, eventually they managed to, the cameras did it themselves and that's an auto-wind.
19:04Auto-wind.
19:05A chance missed for both Veeraj and Daniel with it so close.
19:09But we get a third numbers round of the day and the magic man has the choice.
19:13Six more.
19:13Six more for the last time from you for a while.
19:17Thank you for the different options.
19:20Six little ones.
19:20Nice to have a break from one large.
19:22Right.
19:22We have eight, five, four, ten, two and seven.
19:29And the target?
19:31745.
19:32745.
19:33Numbers up.
19:33745.
19:56540.
19:58540.
19:58540.
19:59640.
19:597, 4, 5, Viraj.
20:067, 4, 5.
20:07And Daniel?
20:08No, 7, 4, 8.
20:09It's unbelievable, isn't it? Off you go.
20:112 plus 8 is 10.
20:122 plus 8, 10.
20:14Times 7.
20:14Times 7, 70.
20:16Plus 4.
20:1774.
20:18Times the 10.
20:20740.
20:21Plus 5.
20:21And you always seem to find a different way to me.
20:23Well done again.
20:24Another 10 points.
20:27Let's get the second tea-time teaser of the day.
20:30Jed Simon.
20:31Now the Jed's spelled G-E-D.
20:33Jed and Simon get together for a little bit.
20:36Jed and Simon get together for a little bit.
20:54Hello again.
20:55Jed and Simon get together for a little bit.
20:57It was a smidgen, just for a smidgen.
21:00And just a little bit of time left for Viraj and Daniel to enjoy each other's company.
21:05It's 19 points of difference, but with 10 points up for grabs in the final countdown conundrum.
21:09If you're new to the show, and there still are people coming to countdown,
21:13it means it's closer than it looks, Daniel.
21:15Not much ground to make up, and it's your letters.
21:17Consonant, please.
21:18Thank you, Daniel.
21:19And a consonant, please.
21:30Lastly, R.
21:32Let's play.
21:46R.
21:47R.
21:47R.
21:48R.
21:48R.
21:48R.
21:49R.
21:49R.
21:49MUSIC CONTINUES
22:17Daniel.
22:18Perished.
22:19Perished and Shapelier.
22:20Susie, big moment here.
22:21OK, unfortunately for Shapelier you need two E's to give you the shape and then the Lear but otherwise it would be Shapelier but I did think the same.
22:38And I'm not sure you can be, you can be perished, I didn't expect this actually.
22:43But yes, made into parishes, that's very unexpected.
22:46Well done.
22:47Eight points.
22:48Clare, what a week to be here, what a week to be here.
22:51Can we add anything?

24:20And the eight?
24:20Beatings.
24:21And beatings.
24:23Beatings, there it is.
24:24Pluralising the ING.
24:27And beatings gets you a really important eight points.
24:30Well done, young man.
24:32Susie, Claire, talk to me.
24:33Still a slight different beasting.
24:36A heavy defeat is a beasting.
24:38No nines?
24:38Not that we could see.
24:39Oh, screaming out a max, wasn't it?
24:42It was, actually.
24:43Really surprised at that.
24:44OK.
24:4580 plays 45.
24:46It's been a very good start to the final part for Viraj,
24:49but still four more rounds.
24:50Still to go, Daniel, as we get our origins of words.
24:53The last one of the week, Susie?
24:55Yes.
24:56Well, I talked not long ago, actually,
25:00about the exclamation of meh being in the dictionary.
25:04And I thought it would be quite fun
25:05just to look at other exclamations
25:06that you might not expect to be in there,
25:08because very often people will say,
25:10you don't have slang in the dictionary, do you?
25:12And I always say, well, yes,
25:14because quite often that's what people need to look up most,
25:17because slang is designed to befuddle
25:19and to evade us,
25:20because it's a kind of secret code.
25:22So, if you remember, popularised in the 1990s by the Simpsons.
25:28So, that's fine.
25:29Doe, on the other hand, from Homer Simpson.
25:32Yes, they did popularise it.
25:33You've got to do a better doe.
25:34I know, you did give me a doe.
25:35Come on, everyone can do it.
25:37Doe!
25:37Doe!
25:38That's it.
25:38OK, 1996, in fact,
25:42is one of the records in the Oxford English Dictionary,
25:46which is attributed to Homer Simpson,
25:48but the exclamation actually dates back to 1945,
25:52and our older viewers might remember Itmer.
25:55It's that man, again, on the radio.
25:57It was a really popular radio series,
25:58and that gave us the first record.
26:02Kapow!
26:03How old do you think that one is?
26:05Well, it was used in the 60s in Batman,
26:07so I'll go...
26:08Maybe it goes back right to maybe the 20s, 1920s?
26:111896 is the first kapow.
26:14You have expected ones like,
26:16Ah!
26:17And Oof!
26:18And Ouch!
26:19And that kind of thing, Oof!
26:21Which is what my teenager often says.
26:23That's actually 18th century,
26:24so that's been with us for a very long time.
26:26But possibly one that always gets people surprised,
26:30or surprises people when it's in,
26:32and that's four.
26:34And four is from 1970.
26:371876 is our first record.
26:40And this one, believe it or not,
26:41comes from an autograph book
26:43that somebody sent in a photo of,
26:46and I think this must be about Tony Blackburn,
26:48because it says,
26:49We love Mr Blackburn's legs.
26:51Fwoar!
26:52Caw!
26:53Wow!
26:53Phew!
26:54I think it must be Tony Blackburn.
26:56And finally, Wow,
26:58which you use quite a lot as well,
27:00believe it or not,
27:01that sounds so American,
27:02but it was used by Robert Burns,
27:06and actually goes right the way back to the 16th century.
27:09That's brilliant.
27:09Loads of fun.
27:10Thank you so much.
27:11You're welcome.
27:12APPLAUSE
27:12For working that Homer Simpson impression
27:15before Monday.

29:55VIRAJ?
29:56Pottage.
29:57And for you, Daniel?
29:58Same, same word.
29:59The same word and with that we can say in a really close game today,
30:04VIRAJ is an octo-champ.
30:06Well done.
30:08You might be getting a nickname.
30:10I'm still thinking.
30:11Right, 86-58.
30:12The dictionary corner.
30:13We've got seven.
30:15Pageant.
30:16Pageant.
30:17OK.
30:18VIRAJ, you've tightened up a wee bit in these last couple of rounds
30:21because you're only human, the nerves of it.
30:23Right, last numbers.
30:25Daniel, you went four large on your first choice.
30:28What are you going to do this time?
30:29I'm going to choose the champ's favourite.
30:31Six small.
30:32Excellent.
30:33Love it.
30:34Very kind.
30:35Six little ones and something fun for everyone else to take us
30:38into the weekend.
30:39The last numbers of the week.
30:41Nine, four, one, ten, three, and eight.
30:47And the target?
30:49148.
30:50148.
30:51Numbers up.
30:52And now to have 60 days.
30:53So tell us, we've got the report.

31:42Swap the 10 and 9 plus 8.
31:44Same way.
31:45That'll do the job.
31:46Well done.
31:49All right, we'll save the eulogies for now.
31:51Let's get the final round out of the way.
31:53The final round of today.
31:55A victory lap for our latest octochamp, Viraj.
31:58But let's see if Daniel can have the last lap.
32:00Fingers on the buzzers as we reveal today's Countdown Conundrum.
32:06And it's Viraj...
32:07Differing.
32:08Differing for his seventh century.
32:10Yes!
32:11APPLAUSE
32:12I'll get to you in a second.
32:16Daniel, you ran into an octochamp first time around in the year 2000.
32:20It's happened again.
32:21But you need to know how good a performance that was.
32:24We've watched this for eight days.
32:25That was brilliant.
32:26I'll see you in 24 more years.
32:28Right.
32:29Brilliant.
32:30Thank you for being here.
32:31Daniel deserves a round of applause for that.
32:33Really good.
32:34Really good.
32:35Well, young Viraj.
32:37Not just a great champion, but a great young man as well.
32:40Total score, 8-6-7.
32:43Now, I know you're a Countdown devotee.
32:46You watch every day, you play every day.
32:48You must be thrilled with that.
32:49Yeah, I mean, it was a bit of a finisher with this one.
32:52But, you know, I'm happy to just be here, to be honest.
32:56Listen, he definitely deserves a nickname, doesn't he?
32:58Yes.
32:59I was thinking this, because we've learned all about you over nearly two weeks.
33:02But I love the fact that you're into typography and you invented your own font
33:07and you're trying to do another one.
33:09Now, Susie, same, we can use font as font of all knowledge.
33:12Yes.
33:13So what about, quite simple, the font?
33:15Excellent.
33:16Like it?
33:17Not the fonts, but the fonts.
33:18Right.
33:19Really?
33:20Love it.
33:21Our new octo-champ, Feraz Silan!
33:23Yay!
33:24Can't wait to see you again.
33:27And I can't wait to see you again.
33:29I've loved your debut in Dictionary Corner.
33:31And we only talked about Steps.
33:32There's so much more to talk about.
33:33I know.
33:34We only talked about me, didn't we?
33:36That's weird.
33:37Love it.
33:38We'll see you again, hopefully.
33:40I've had a lovely week.
33:41It's been great.
33:42Yeah.
33:43Even better for us, haven't you?
33:44Susie, thank you so much.
33:46I've got a rival nickname.
33:47Yes.
33:48Obviously, he's left us breathless with every word.
33:50The silencer.
33:51As in, the silencer silam.
33:53Yeah, we'll stick with the font.
33:55It's good, though.
33:56Deserves more.
33:57Deserves more.
33:58Always does.
33:59Right, you enjoy your weekend.
34:00Thank you so much, as always.
34:01Appreciate it.
34:02And what a week it's been, but we're not done yet.
34:04What a series it's been.
34:05We'll do it all again on Monday.
34:06We cannot wait.
34:07Susie, Rachel and I will be here.
