00:30Hello everybody, welcome to Countdown this Tuesday. It is February the 27th and that is International Polar Bird Day and we love a chat about an animal. A lot of bad news when it comes to polar bears of course but they are glorious formidable animals aren't they Rachel Ryan?
00:48They are. I've not been lucky enough to see any in the world but I saw one in captivity. Again it did make me sad. I know some aquariums are fantastic and do amazing conservation work but sometimes you go to them and you just feel really bad for the animals.
01:00Yeah and today's education is part of the hope. I talked a lot of environmentalists on the radio and campaigners and I kind of think where do you get this enthusiasm every time you come on and they say well you have to.
01:12You have to keep the hope that you're going to find that little miracle. The one fact about polar bears of course the old chestnut.
01:19They're not white.
01:19They're not white.
01:20Your favourite fact.
01:21So they get the black skin, they've got the translucent fur but of course it's the light reflecting off it. It still blows my mind every time we say that.
01:30Well let's head over to Dictionary Corner. I couldn't bear to be without her any day on Countdown. Our G of the D, Susie Dent.
01:37I'm back this week. The radio on DJ who's as cool as a cucumber. It's Vic Hope.
01:41Lovely to have you back and Nicky as well who's won two Countdowns now. Nicky Needham, our champion from Lancashire.
01:51We can say this now. You've managed to go one better than you did when you were on Countdown in the mid-90s.
01:57I only want to know one thing because the mid-90s, unless I'm wrong, is pre-teapot.
02:05Right? Come on, we love a bit of Countdown nerdery, don't we?
02:09What did you win?
02:10So I won two big dictionaries, which are still in use, and I won a computer game in the form of a floppy disk.
02:21What, Countdown?
02:23Yeah, yeah.
02:23What a terrible prize that is.
02:26What a terrible dated prize that is. The teapot's timeless.
02:31And a mug, but it was different to the one now, so...
02:33Alright, so that's two mugs you'll have now. Three if you include me.
02:37Um, where's the floppy disk? Where is it? Come on.
02:40Probably in my attic somewhere.
02:42No, I thought it would still be in your mantelpiece, Nicky. Unbelievable.
02:47Well, listen, if you're going to make it three wins, you're going to have to beat Isabel Sheward, who's from Lincolnshire. How are you?
02:52I'm very well, thank you, Colin.
02:54Now, sometimes people appear on Countdown, and you're sitting at home and you go,
02:59I reckon, have they been on before? But it's Mastermind for you, because you were, not that long ago, Mastermind Champion.
03:05I was very fortunate. Yes, I was Mastermind Champion back in 2017.
03:10Yeah, not that long ago. So what was your specialist subject?
03:13It was various aspects of the golden age of Hollywood.
03:18So for the final, I very craftily chose a Hollywood subject, the life and films of Billy Wilder.
03:25So for my film piece for the grand final, I went to Los Angeles for the day.
03:30No. Yes.
03:31That's very, very clever. Well, I love it. Mastermind conquered.
03:35Let's see if you can do the double and do Countdown.
03:37Good luck to Isabel and Nicky.
03:41Off you go, Nicky. Lights, camera, action.
03:44And I'll start with a consonant, please, Rachel.

04:59Hermit and mother.
05:01Yes.
05:01All right, very nice indeed.
05:02Over the dictionary corner.
05:03We think for a seven, you could have mothier.
05:06Oh, a little bit mothier.
05:07Yeah, just add the I to mother.
05:08But, yeah, that was as well as we could do.
05:11Yeah, there you go.
05:12Isabel, let's move on from that.
05:14Hello, can I have a continent, please?

07:47No, I think I've got 777.
07:50Which is too far away.
07:5111.
07:53Which means, Rachel, the stage is all yours.
07:57Well, funnily enough, for a one large, this was actually impossible.
08:01You could have got to one away.
08:02Yep, but that's why we all got stuck.
08:04A rare occasion.

10:03Putter. Putter, there you go, bit of golf.
10:05Gutter. Oh, not a bit of golf.
10:07Gotter and putter. Absolutely fine.
10:09Yeah. Yeah. Hey, I don't...
10:12Slim pickings. Can we get beyond that?
10:14Yeah, gutter, putter, fetter.
10:16Refuge, also for six.
10:18All done. All done, I'm afraid.
10:19All done, indeed. Right.
10:21Nicky, nine letters, please.

11:30Six.
11:31Six as well. Off you go, Nicky.
11:33Moaned.
11:34Moaned.
11:35And Isabel?
11:36Manned.
11:37Manned.
11:38So again, sixes, sixes, sixes, can we go higher?
11:41Well, for seven, you could have demons, but the old spelling of demons,
11:44with the A-E.
11:45Of course you could, yeah, very good indeed for demons.
11:48But that's it, really, just that one word.
11:51So easy to feel like, oh, they're difficult rounds,
11:53but actually, Nicky and Isabel, six is fantastic.
11:55In the last two letters rounds.
11:58But let's switch back to numbers.
12:00We were undone, surprisingly, in our first game today.
12:03So, Isabel, let's do it.
12:05One large, please.
12:06The rest small.
12:07Thank you, Isabel. One from the top.
12:09And five not.
12:10And for the second time today, the selection is five, nine,
12:14one, seven, eight.
12:17And the large one, 50.
12:19And the target, 825.
12:22825, numbers up.
12:24So, we'll see you next time.
12:29So, again, we'll see you next time.
12:31MUSIC PLAYS
12:548.25, Isabel Heard, talk to me.
12:57Gone blank, sorry. No worries. And Nicky Needham?
13:00No, 8.14, I'm too far away.
13:02You don't talk to me either. Talk to me, Rachel.
13:04All right, I'll talk to you.
13:06If you say seven minus five is two, two times eight is 16,
13:12and then 50 plus one, 51, times those together,
13:17and you get 816 with a nine left over for 8.25.
13:21Magic, well done.
13:22APPLAUSE
13:24Good, low scoring, but really tight, really interesting.
13:27And 23 points each, as we have a little chat with Vic Hope,
13:31which we always love, third time in Dictionary Corner.
13:34We know each other well enough, we can say this now.
13:37So, Rachel and I have a little bit of an obsession with your fashion.
13:43I was wondering where it was going there.
13:46We absolutely love it.
13:47So, it started the very first time that you were on,
13:50because, Rachel, you fell in love with the first outfits
13:52that Vic wore in Dictionary Corner.
13:54I literally went and bought all of them.
13:56Yes, you did.
13:56Because we were chatting, all three of us,
13:58we were sitting around the phone, like, just buying clothes afterwards.
14:01Yeah.
14:02But what interested me was this dress hire, which you do.
14:08Yeah.
14:09Which, again, ties in.
14:10We talk at the top of the show, we talk a lot about conservation,
14:13we talk a lot about the environment, but it's what you do.
14:15And I know that it filters through everything that you do.
14:18So, you go to a lot of big events, and when you go,
14:22you've got the red carpet, you've got a walker, whatever colour it is,
14:25and you're renting the dresses, right?
14:28Yeah.
14:28So, they go back the next day, rather than spending a fortune on them.
14:31Like a library for clothes.
14:33Yes.
14:33It works so well.
14:34I mean, since then, I've tried to stop buying clothes entirely.
14:37It's just, it's not economical, it's not good for the environment,
14:41it's not good for my wallet, and renting is amazing.
14:45Yeah.
14:45If you only want to wear something, especially if you're going to a wedding
14:48or an event, or maybe on a holiday or something,
14:50you just want, you want something that you've not worn before,
14:52but you're probably not going to wear again, it's ideal.
14:54You get to wear something fancy, and then send it back.
14:58Yeah.
14:58And, yeah, it works really, really well.
15:01It feels like going to the library when I was younger,
15:03and just swapping it in each time, and there's loads of people out there
15:06who are then making a little bit of money off it as well.
15:08Yeah.
15:08Everyone's a winner.
15:09Yeah, really good idea, really good conversation.
15:12Thank you, Vic.
15:14Brilliant, thank you.
15:15OK, back to the game.
15:1723 points apiece.
15:19Nikki, letters.
15:20Start with a consonant, please.
15:22Thank you, Nikki.
15:23H.
15:24And a vowel.
15:26I.
15:27And a consonant.
15:29L.
15:30And another consonant, please.
15:32W.
15:34And a vowel.
15:36O.
15:37And a consonant.
15:38N.
15:39Another consonant, please.
15:41R.
15:42And a vowel.
15:44O.
15:46U.
15:49And a consonant, please.
15:51Lastly, G.
15:52Goodness me.
15:53Start that clock.
15:55stamp a word for magic.
16:11Music.
16:12Nu.
16:13Do.
16:14January.
16:14支
16:15Naeficon.
16:16Mirror.
16:16Editor.
16:17The Hon ons.
16:18To.
16:18To.
16:18Do.
16:19To.
16:19To.
16:20To.
16:20To.
16:20To.
16:20To.
16:21To.
16:21To.
16:21To.
16:21To.
16:22To.
16:22To.
16:23Right, Nicky? A risky eight. A risky eight. And Isabel?
16:29Save seven. Save seven, which is? Howling.
16:32Howling, well spotted. We finally got that ING, didn't we? Nicky?
16:36Well, I wondered, like, you have yearling,
16:38I wonder if you could have howling.
16:40Oh!
16:41You can't, I'm afraid.
16:45Not there. That will call time and that.
16:47So, that's seven points for Isabel. Well done to you.
16:50Anything above a seven? Was there a less risky eight?
16:53There was an eight. We've got walling.
16:55Are we spelling that? W-H? W-H-O-R-L-I-N-G.
16:59And it's essentially to create spiral patterns
17:03or to go round in a spiral fashion. It's quite lovely.
17:05Nice. A little bit of education there. Seven points in it.
17:08Let's get more letters now, Isabel.
17:10Consonant, please. Thank you, Isabel.
17:13R. And another?
17:16P. And a vowel, please.
17:19E. And a consonant?
17:23F. Another consonant?
17:25S. And vowel, please.
17:29U. Consonant?
17:32D. Vowel.
17:35O. And consonant, please.
17:39And lastly, S.
17:42Let's do it.
17:44Time is up.
17:58MUSIC PLAYS
18:12Time is up, Isabel.
18:14Seven.
18:15Nicky?
18:16That's six.
18:17That's the only of me both, what have you got?
18:19Um, first.
18:20And there's seven, Isabel.
18:21Well, it might not be there.
18:23Fussers.
18:24Fussers.
18:25People who make a fuss.
18:26You need three S's for fussers.
18:27So, you can't be a fusser, but you need three S's.
18:29Oh!
18:30I'm sorry, Isabel.
18:31Sorry to be fussy, but there you go.
18:32Yes.
18:33That's the way it is.
18:34That pulls it back.
18:35So, again, the six scores.
18:37So, we're scraping around for a seven or an eight.
18:40How do we get on?
18:41Well, for eight, profused.
18:43Oh, profused.
18:44Yes.
18:45Weird to put the D on it.
18:46It's an old variant of profuse, simply.
18:49But helpful for us.
18:50Good stuff.
18:5139-28.
18:52Let's get back to the numbers then.
18:54Nicky?
18:55I'll have one large, please, and five small.
18:58Thank you, Nicky.
18:59One large five-little coming up for you.
19:01See if this can put any daylight between you two.
19:03The little ones are eight, six, one, nine, and seven.
19:09And the large one, 100.
19:11And the target to reach, 755.
19:13755.
19:14755.
19:15Numbers up.
19:16So, three, four, four, five, four, five.
19:17One, two, eight, ten.
19:18Two, eight, eight.
19:19All 1957.
19:20I think this has been quite a long shift.
19:21One is, the big one.
19:22One must come.
19:23I think this is a little tricky.
19:24I'm down.
19:25I'm down.
19:26Five, six, one.
19:27Spice andั้s.
19:28Two, one.
19:29One, two, three.
19:30I'm down.
19:31To the side, there's been a little bit.
19:32One.
19:33Two, one.
19:34Two, two, three, two.
19:35One, five, three, four.

19:51Mr. By one, Isabel.
19:53Um, 7.55.
19:55You've nailed it. Ten points, if you're right.
19:57Yes, if I've not been seeing things.
19:59Um, nine times six is 54.
20:03Yep.
20:04Plus one is 55.
20:07Seven times 100 is 700.
20:09Yeah, haven't seen anything.
20:107.55. Well done.
20:12Yay.
20:15So raise that for the daylight, just a little bit.
20:1711 points as we get our second Tea Time teaser,
20:20which is overpaid, overpaid.
20:23The steak was costly enough, but the sauce was a rip-off.
20:26The steak was costly enough, but the sauce was a rip-off.
20:29The steak was costly enough, but the sauce was a rip-off,
20:48our second Tea Time teaser.
20:49I mean, I can pronounce it, but Susie, go ahead.
20:51Poivre Rade.
20:53Of course.
20:53It would be in French, and it's a peppery sauce, essentially.
20:56Poivre being pepper in French, so, yeah.
20:59Poivre Rade.
20:59At 29.40, our two-time champion, Nicky,
21:02under a little bit of pressure,
21:04up against the former Mastermind champion, Isabel Heard.
21:08This is much more important than Mastermind, let me tell you.
21:10Off you go.
21:11Vowel, please.
21:13Thank you, Isabel.
21:14E.
21:15Consonant.
21:17M.
21:18Consonant.
21:20V.
21:22Consonant, please.
21:24S.
21:25And another.
21:27N.
21:29And a vowel.
21:31A.
21:32And a vowel.
21:33E.
21:35And a consonant.
21:37L.
21:38And a consonant, please.
21:39And lastly, W.
21:41Let's play.
21:42MUSIC PLAYS
21:44Isabel.
21:46MUSIC PLAYS
21:47Isabel.
22:00Seven.
22:01Seven from you.
22:04Nicky.
22:16Seven.
22:17Seven from you, Isabel.
22:19Enamels.
22:19Enamels.
22:20Enslave.
22:21Enslave.
22:22Very good.
22:22Enslave.
22:23I thought you said and slave.
22:24I was like, and slave is definitely two words.
22:27Enslave and enamels.
22:28Get your teeth into that.
22:30Exactly, our two.
22:31Yeah.
22:31Yeah.
22:32All done.
22:32Brilliant.
22:33Seven points each.
22:34What a standard.
22:35And a good time to point this out.
22:37I feel like we should have some music underneath this.
22:40As I say, this is a rallying call.
22:42Still, and traditionally, the majority of people who apply to come on Countdown are men.
22:47I'm loving our all-women days.
22:49And I count myself as one of the ladies.
22:51We've had a few over the last couple of weeks.
22:53It's absolutely fantastic.
22:54We've got to have another female champion.
22:56It's been a little while since we had a series champion.
22:59It was female.
22:59And we do not get as many entries from females as male.
23:02That's just a fact.
23:03So, here's your rallying call.
23:05If you're at home now, you're scoring 90, you're scoring 100, I don't really want to come on Countdown.
23:10Do, right?
23:10Come on and join it.
23:11Look at the great time we're having.
23:13So, you're all welcome.
23:14But let's see if we can get that quota of female entries up.
23:17And how you do it is you just send an email.
23:19Countdown at Channel 4.com.
23:21Using the number 4.
23:22And we'll take it from there.
23:23Countdown at Channel 4.com.
23:26All right.
23:27Not sure who's going to be the leading lady today.
23:29Still in the mix.
23:30Nicky, letters.
23:31Start with a consonant, please.
23:33Thank you, Nicky.
23:34L.
23:35And a vowel.
23:37A.
23:38And a consonant.
23:40D.
23:41And another consonant.
23:43G.
23:44And a vowel.
23:46I.
23:47And a consonant, please.
23:49C.
23:50And a vowel.
23:51A.
23:54And a consonant.
23:57T.
23:59And a vowel, please.
24:01And a final E.
24:03And kind down.
24:04Good news.
24:31Bye.
24:32Bye.
24:32Bye.
24:33Bye.
24:33Oh, Nicky. Six. Six from you and Isabel. Seven.
24:40Nicky, what have you got? Dial eight. Dial eight.
24:42This would be a big score, Isabel. Dialect. Dialect.
24:46Absolutely brilliant. Well done. Yes.
24:48In any language, that's good. You pick up the points.
24:52What do we have over in Dick's three corner from Susie and Vic?
24:55We've got a nine. Yes, and what a nine.
24:57It's a beautiful word and very appropriate this week.
25:00It's glaciated. Glaciated.
25:02And it's on International Polar Bear Day. Exactly what we need.
25:05I love it.
25:07Right, what a word to come out today of all days.
25:10Brilliant. Love it. OK, here we go.
25:12Four rounds left.
25:14You know, you just want to get on with it, don't you?
25:16Right? You'd be awful if I stopped now,
25:18but that's exactly what I'm going to do. Origins of words.
25:21Yes, well, thanks to Richard Butcher, who asks,
25:24we all fill in our forms with our first name and surname,
25:27but where does the word surname come from?
25:30What is its origin?
25:32And I have to give a hat tip to the English Heritage website,
25:35which is just lovely.
25:36It's a really nice place to browse, actually,
25:38and it's got some really nice snippets
25:40about the history of surnames.
25:43And it's a great one for on a mass,
25:45on a mass of people who are interested in the origins of names.
25:48And essentially, we have to thank the Normans after the Norman conquest
25:54for English surnames, because before they came along,
25:58there weren't really very many,
26:00and they actually had a fundamental effect
26:02on the way that we name ourselves.
26:04So many Saxon and early Celtic names actually just disappeared.
26:10And French names like William, of course, we anglicised them a little bit,
26:14Robert, Henry, they became really popular among the general population.
26:18And this is when, for the first time, surnames began to appear.
26:22So they'd started to be used by Norman lords,
26:26who wanted to have some sort of hereditary family name included.
26:30But for the Anglo-Saxons, as they say,
26:32they had kind of nicknames as their second name.
26:35So there are some wonderful ones that are recorded in the court roles.
26:38It was talked about Peck cheese.
26:40There was a Mr Peck cheese.
26:41There was even a Mr Sweat in the bed.
26:43It was not good.
26:44But it was all about personal characteristics, if you like.
26:48Or names, including paternity.
26:51So in Wales, you had up as a prefix, meaning son of,
26:54and here we just had sons.
26:56We had Williamson, Edmondson, et cetera.
26:59And as I say, it was really with the Normans that things started to change.
27:03And the English Heritage website has a lovely stat, actually.
27:06In 1066, when the Normans first arrived,
27:09many landowners were simply referred to by their Anglo-Saxon first names.
27:13But by 1086, in the space of 20 years, surnames began to appear.
27:18And so you can actually see the evolution.
27:21And they were first added, of course,
27:23because we had to distinguish people who shared the same name
27:26and we had to kind of differentiate.
27:28So you had Robert the Baker, which became Robert Baker.
27:31Or you had Robert at the Wood, who lived in the Wood.
27:33And that became Robert Wood.
27:35We had Rachel Riley.
27:37Riley lived by the Rye Clearing.
27:40I don't know if Rachel was around in those days.
27:42But not you.
27:43But a Rachel Riley.
27:46Murray, actually, is also a name that is linked with descendants.
27:50So you, again, son of or descendant of.
27:53And by Richard II's poll tax of 1381, most English families and British families, indeed,
28:01had adopted the use of hereditary surnames.
28:04It's a fascinating snapshot of how people and civilisation has evolved.
28:09As for where it comes from, it is French, of course.
28:12Seul means above.
28:13And we have name.
28:14So it's an above name.
28:15It's something that you add on.
28:17And, of course, it soon became all-important.
28:19Thank you, Richard, for the email.
28:20And thank you, Susie, for taking a butcher's at that.
28:22Very good.
28:23APPLAUSE
28:26Right, let's take a butcher's at the score, then.
28:28It is 54-36.
28:31Even I can work out that's 18 points.
28:33So you are not home and dry, Isabel.
28:35That teapot is not yours yet.
28:36Four rounds to go. Off you go.
28:38Consonant, please.

31:15It remains an 18-point gap.
31:18To Dictionary Corner.
31:18A bunch of sevens.

32:45I was just saying after yesterday's programme, I was saying to the team, I was like,
32:49it's going to take something special to beat Nicky, I think,
32:52and then you get a mastermind champion the next day.
32:55She wasn't going to be a mug, that was for sure.
32:58Right, Isabel, you're a new champion, but let's enjoy this last round.
33:01See if you can go out with a bang, Nicky.
33:02You've been really good at the Countdown Conundrum, so let's reveal today.
