00:30Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio on Good Friday.
00:36Important feast, Good Friday.
00:38But there's something else happening, perhaps of less importance, but for some, it's a very important day, way down there in West Sussex.
00:45There's a pub in West Sussex, actually, because we've got the British and World Marbles Championship taking place.
00:52Marbles, can you believe it?
00:54Did you play Marbles as a kid?
00:56The closest I've ever got is Kaplunk.
00:58What's that?
00:58You have this plastic thing and you shove a load of knitting needle chopsticks through it and then you drop all the marbles down and then you have to move the sticks one by one so that the marbles don't drop.
01:09Okay.
01:09I wouldn't even be able to even guess the rules of Marbles Marbles, do you know?
01:13We all had marbles as kids, yeah, and we had pretty ones and the rest of it, but I'm not going to get carried away.
01:19Well, good luck down in Sussex.
01:20Yeah.
01:21Have a pint on me.
01:22I hope they don't get too many marbles hooligans there, spoiling the fun.
01:25Exactly, or indeed lose their marbles.
01:28Rachel, they're here, our competitors.
01:30Andy Myerson, who came through, won a teapot yesterday.
01:33Very good showing yesterday.
01:35Well done.
01:35You feeling comfortable?
01:36Yeah.
01:37Move it a go.
01:38No, you played, no, you played with consummate skill and calmness, I thought.
01:42Now you're up against Fiona Tickham.
01:45Hello.
01:45Welcome.
01:45From Blackwater in Hampshire, freelance IT developer.
01:50You're a runner, you were telling me.
01:52Yes, I do park run regularly.
01:55You were saying there, it's a 5K run, it's a sort of international bash.
01:59Well, it started off in the UK, it started off at Bushy Park about 10 years or so ago
02:05with just a group of friends and it grew and grew and now there's hundreds of events
02:09over the country, always 9 o'clock Saturday morning at your local park and it's spread
02:13internationally.
02:14You've run 300 of them.
02:16Well, I did my 300th last New Year's Day, so I'm a few ahead now, but yeah, it's a great
02:21way to start the weekend.
02:22Good for you.
02:23Well, you're starting the weekend now, actually.
02:25Good luck to you both, Andy and to Fiona.
02:29And on this Good Friday, we turn over to the corner and we see Susie and the great Paul
02:38Zanon.
02:39Welcome back, Paul.

10:48A joiner.
10:50It is there.
10:51Brilliant, yes.
10:51It's a US legal term for a property or tract of land adjoining another.
10:56Well done.
10:56Very good.
10:59Very good.
11:01You've leapfrogged Andy, two by two points.
11:0424 plays 22.
11:05Fiona in the lead, and it's Fiona's numbers game.
11:09Could I have one large and five small, please?

11:43Fiona.
12:00I've got 623, but not properly written down.
12:03Andy, 63.
12:04So, Fiona.
12:06I had 9 minus 3 is 6.
12:08Yes.
12:09Times 100.
12:11600.
12:138 and 8 and 7.
12:158, 8, 7, 4, 1 away.
12:18Very good.

12:238, 9 to 72.
12:25Yep.
12:25Take them away to get to 6, 2, 8.
12:28And then the remaining 8 minus 3 is 5 and take that away.
12:32Yep.
12:33Well done.
12:34Good, but not perfect.
12:35For that, we turn to Rachel.
12:36Is it possible to be perfect?
12:38It is, Nick.
12:40Say 3 times 8.
12:429 minus 7 is 2.
12:4724 minus 2, 22.
12:49100 minus 22, 78.
12:53And times up by the other 8.
12:55Fabulous.
12:55So, Fiona, 31, Andy on 29.
13:03Well done, guys.
13:04As we turn with laser-like intensity, our eyes on Paul Zenon to see what he's up to now.
13:12So, I've been doing a bit of shopping for Easter.
13:14And what I've got here is an Easter egg.
13:17No great surprises, which we'll bung there for the moment.
13:20But I've also got a pack of cards.
13:22Now, we're going to show you a little kind of card trick now with Susie's help.
13:25But, you see, the smile just leaving a face as soon as I say that.
13:28Yeah.
13:28I'll spread them out on there.
13:30I just, you choose one yourself.
13:31Okay?
13:32And to make that card unique, what I'll do is get you to write something on it.
13:37Now, obviously, I know your name, so maybe don't use your name.
13:39Maybe draw a picture of an egg with a face on it or a doodle of any sort.
13:42This is how bad the economy's getting.
13:44The banks are giving these away free now.
13:46Thank you, officer.
13:48So, just do that on the face of the card, not the back.
13:50I'll look over here into my elaborate system of mirrors.
13:53Anything?
13:53Okay, anything you like.
13:54It's only to you.
13:55Nothing too rude.
13:56We're on the telly.
13:58Okay.
13:58And then, I want you to just show that to the cameras.
14:01Okay.
14:01Great.
14:02Let's shuffle those out of the way.
14:04And I'm going to get you to put it back in the deck.
14:05I'm going to ripple through like that, so shove it wherever you like.
14:08There we go.
14:08Right.
14:09Now, if I started looking through these cards now, and I found your card, it wouldn't be that impressive, would it?
14:14You've written something on it.
14:15It's not rocket salad.
14:16However, if we take the bag here, I'm going to drop the cards in here in a moment, and I want you to do a little magical waggle with your fingers.
14:23So, oh, you've done that before.
14:24Right, okay.
14:25So, do that.
14:26Do it kind of about here, like that, and I'll shove these in here, and just think, while you're doing that, just think the word rise.
14:32So, waggle and rise.
14:33Waggle and rise.
14:34I'm sure you know the routine.
14:35Rise.
14:36Woo!
14:40Oh.
14:40Wow.
14:41Was it good for you?
14:44One of those cards.
14:46Has rizzed a bit more than the others, and it's now flying invisibly through the ethereal ether.
14:52I've not really thought this through.
14:54And has actually ended up in Nick's inside jacket pocket, left side.
14:59But it doesn't stay there until it's off again.
15:08I'm sorry.
15:09It comes all the way back over here.
15:10Now, have a look at this.
15:11There's nothing kind of hidden in my hands, up my sleeves, apart from my arms.
15:14No.
15:14Okay, but what we've got is this, what looks suspiciously like an Easter egg.
15:18That's because that's what it is.
15:19So, have a look at that.
15:20It's completely kind of sealed in with a tissue there.
15:23Let's unravel that.
15:24And inside that, we've actually got it covered in foil, like that.
15:29So, let's peel the foil off there, like that.
15:32And as you can see, it is a chocolate egg.
15:34Yeah.
15:34A very delicate chocolate egg.
15:37So, let's open that up.
15:38Inside there is another egg, kind of a Russian egg arrangement here.
15:45And inside there, have a look at that.
15:47You might recognise that from one of those very popular kind of...
15:50You're not allowed to say that.
15:51Oh, yeah.
15:51Okay.
15:52Kids.
15:52Now, what we need to do is I'm going to pop that open.
15:55Yeah.
15:56And tell me what you see inside.
15:58A card.
16:00Have a look inside there.
16:01Now, look.
16:02Check that out.
16:03Inside there is a card folded not once, not twice, not three times, not four times.
16:08Actually, three times.
16:10What was your card?
16:11The three of hearts.
16:12Three of hearts with a kind of little box cube arrangement.
16:16Is that right?
16:17A howl.
16:19A howl.
16:26Yeah.
16:27You can have that.
16:28I'm keeping the egg.
16:30That's brilliant.
16:31That is excellent.
16:31That really is brilliant.
16:33Thank you very much, Paul.
16:34So, 31 plays 29, Fiona in the lead.
16:38And it's Andy.
16:39Let us game.
16:40I'll start with a continent, please.
16:42Thank you, Andy.

17:46Andy, seven.

17:48Yes.
17:49Same word.
17:50Roadies.
17:51Now, Paul and Susie.
17:53Yeah, there were a couple of eights there.
17:55One was misreads and the other was sidearms.
17:59Sidearms.
18:0538 plays 36.
18:06Two points in it.

20:35So, Fiona?
20:36Yeah, 3 plus 3 is 6.
20:393 plus 3 is 6.
20:42Times 2 is 12.
20:44Times 2, yep, 12.
20:45Times 75 is 900.
20:48It is.
20:49And take off the 8.
20:50And take the 8.
20:52Yep, 3 away, well done.
20:54Good, strong stuff.
20:56Where's that 3 got to, Rachel?
20:58Leave it with me, Nick.
20:59Certainly will, certainly will.
21:00But Fiona's shot up now.
21:0253-2 Andy, a great player.
21:05He's on 44 as we turn to our second Tea Time teaser,
21:08which is Bill China and the clue.
21:11You tell David to relax despite the problem he has with his hand.
21:15You tell David to relax despite the problem he has with his hand.
21:26Welcome back.
21:38Welcome back.
21:38I left you with the clue.
21:39You tell David to relax despite the problem he has with his hand.
21:44The answer to that is chill Blaine, poor chap.
21:47He's got a chill Blaine.
21:48You haven't got a chill Blaine.
21:49There's nothing wrong with you.
21:51What have you done?
21:51You've cracked it.
21:52I've missed my favourite product of two primes.
21:55If you say 75 plus 50 plus 2 is 127,
22:01and then 8 minus 3 divided by 3 is 7,
22:05times them together you get 889.
22:07Wonderful.
22:07Wonderful.
22:10Well done, Rose.
22:12As ever.
22:1344-53 now.
22:14Andy, 44, and it's Fiona's letters game.

23:30Fiona? Marauds.
23:32And? Muriads.
23:34Muriads, obviously, is there, but not Muriads, I'm afraid, Andy. Sorry.
23:38Bad luck, indeed.
23:39Paul?
23:40A couple of sevens there with samurai. It's a nice one.
23:43Yeah.
23:44And sudaria.
23:46Sudaria is, first of all, the plural of sudarium.
23:48And in the Roman Catholic Church, that is another term for Veronica,
23:53and that's a cloth supposedly impressed with an image of Christ.
23:56That's right.
23:58That's right.
23:58Yeah.
24:02Interesting.
24:03So, 60, page 44, Andy on 44.

25:13Yes, Fiona?
25:14I will try a dodgy eight then as well.
25:17No, Andy.
25:19Alkaline.
25:20And Fiona?
25:21I had lace-like.
25:22Oh, you need two E's for it, but if it's any consolation, it's not in.
25:27Fiona, sorry.
25:29Well done, Andy, on that then.
25:31Paul and Susie?
25:33Yeah, there is another eight there with Alliance.
25:36Very good.
25:37And the girls?
25:38No, that was it.
25:39All right.
25:39Andy's on the charge.
25:42Andy's on the charge.
25:44Only eight behind, 52 plays 60.
25:46As we turn to Susie and her wonderful origins of words.
25:50Susie?
25:51Well, thanks to Richard Hall, who asked if I could explain how the word bolt has come to be used in so many different contexts.
25:59It's actually all about toxophily or archery, because in Old English, bolt meant an arrow.
26:06They're plain and simple.
26:08Specifically, it was a short and stout arrow, I guess, with a very heavy head.
26:12So this is the bolt that you will find in the expression, to sit bolt upright, with the back very, very straight.
26:18It's so straight as an arrow.
26:20And the bolt that we use for doors and locks is similar, because it was applied to, not just to arrows, but to other short metal rods.
26:29Particularly with a kind of knobbed end, which explains why they became stout pins for fastening objects together, as well as part of a lock,
26:36which will spring out of a sliding metal rod, the bolts that we use on our doors, and also the bolt that you will find in a gun that thrusts the cartridge into the chamber of a firearm.
26:47A completely unexpected bolt from the blue is a thunderbolt.
26:52So that one's very specific.
26:54So usually a flash of lightning with a simultaneous crash of thunder, and it comes from a clear blue sky.
26:59So a bolt from the blue is obviously something that would be quite shocking and quite dramatic.
27:04When a horse bolts, or we make a bolt for it, we're referring to flying like an arrow.
27:09So back to that original reference.
27:11And similarly, if we bolt our food, we gulp it down as fast as perhaps the flight of a crossbow's arrow.
27:18And I mentioned toxophily, which is the technical term for archery.
27:22That goes back to the Greek toxon, meaning an arrow.
27:25And toxons in those days, they would be dipped into poison.
27:29So the tips of these arrows would be full of poison.
27:32Of course, when they struck the victim, they would be lethal.
27:36And that's where we get the idea of something toxic today, of course.
27:39But why we also talk about intoxicating, because to intoxicate someone originally was to hit them with poison with your arrow.
27:46So, of course, today we talk about intoxications, poisoning of a very different kind.
27:50Very good.
27:52Very good.
27:5560 plays 52.
27:57Fiona clinging on there, and it's Fiona's letters game.
28:00Now, good luck.

29:22Oh, it's two words, I'm afraid.
29:24Which is very bad luck.
29:26Bad luck indeed.
29:27Sorry.
29:27What's the corner got for us?
29:29Paul?
29:29Apart from poetic, nothing at all.
29:32No.
29:32So, no, that was it.
29:33That'll do.
29:34All right.
29:35So, 66.
29:36Fiona's stretched the lead slightly to 52.

31:05Oh, tickling them.
31:06Tickling them, yeah.
31:06And another seven there with the very Italian sounding, uh, Verissimo.
31:11Or Verismo.
31:12Yeah, it is realism in the arts, so especially in late 19th century Italian opera, Verismo.
31:17Well done, you guys.
