00:30Hello, everybody. Welcome to Countdown. It is Thursday, November the 2nd, 2023, which means today is Channel 4's 41st birthday and therefore it is Countdown's 41st birthday. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to me. Happy birthday, Rachel.
00:48Happy birthday to us. Yay. Now, I've got some, you know, there's a lot of stats about Countdown of how many rounds there's been, etc, etc. But I asked producer Damien to come up with a few little novel facts about the history of Countdown.
01:00And I love these. There's never been a Rachel Riley as a contestant. There's never been a Colin Murray. There has been a Susanna Dent, who didn't win, by the way, who didn't win.
01:12We don't know if that was a young Susie. I'd have to find the footage from 1996. But that's a fact. These ones blow my mind, right? Because think of all the thousands and thousands of rounds of Countdown.
01:25Yeah, in a normal nine-letter round, Countdown has never came out in the letters. You'd think once. We've had it as a conundrum recently. But it's never been in a normal round, Countdown.
01:36And, of course, the obvious things, which is just like tenure. We always talk about tenure. Susie's had more shows. But, you know, Richard Carroll, Rachel, Susie. That's the big four.
01:46But, you know, I don't want to quote, I'm ahead of Anne now. Not that it's a competition. I'm ahead of Des Lynham. I'm very close to Des O'Connor. He'll be nobbled shortly.
01:56And Geoff Stelling, I'm coming for you as well. But, hey...
01:59Is there anything you're not competitive in?
02:02Absolutely nothing at all. But, hey, we're in good shape, aren't we? And it's not, you know, something that we're arrogant about. It's actually because of you watching at home.
02:11But at the moment, you have to go back to before London 2012 to find more healthy viewing figures than what we have now.
02:17So we're looking good at 41.
02:19We are. And I've been here 15 years. And you know what? Our lovely wardrobe guy, Lee, he's just found some of the shoes that I've had since 15 years.
02:27Just like at the bottom of the clothing pile. And they do look a little bit dated, I have to say.
02:32Well, listen, it's always like every day's a party here, but it's a birthday party today. Thank you very much.
02:38Hey, happy birthday, Susie.
02:39Thank you. It's exciting.
02:41Do you remember the big deal it was made? For the 48th, you had the clock was all done up.
02:45For Willa Benjamin was flown in in a helicopter. I get absolutely nothing for 41.
02:49Oh, we'll see to that.
02:51Love it. Well, listen, newborn on Countdown, we have little Bobby.
02:55First time ever in Dixonry Corner. And he's been so, so good this week.
03:00The magician Ben Hamlin's here.
03:03What a lovely day to be here.
03:05Yeah, really nice one.
03:06I'm like the magician at a birthday party.
03:09And a nice day for someone who is a lifelong fan of Countdown to be closing in an OctoChamp.
03:14Six wins so far for Caroline McManus, bidding to become Guernsey's first ever OctoChamp in 41 years.
03:22It's funny the memories, isn't it?
03:24When you look back, what was your first Countdown? Can you remember watching?
03:27Oh, no, because it's so long ago. My memory fails me as I'm getting older, you know.
03:32Caroline, good luck today.
03:34You're going up against Dean Worthy. He's from Kilkenny. How are you, sir?
03:39Not too bad, no, Colin, thanks.
03:40Yeah, yeah, Countdown is more than double your age.
03:45That's what I love about it. Where did it come into your life?
03:48I probably used to watch the 8 out of 10 castles Countdown a bit.
03:52But then I did used to see it as well, sometimes just kind of back during my school days, I suppose.
04:00Yeah.
04:01Well, listen, good luck to you on her 41st birthday, Dean and Caroline.
04:06Let's begin.

05:36That's what we had, Maltier.
05:37Maltier.
05:38Right, well, look, cheers to that.
05:39Good start for you, Dean.
05:40And you pick these letters.
05:42Hi, Rachel.
05:42Hi, Dean.

06:20I'm going to say thanks to this as the language.
06:24Thank you so much.
06:40And a danny.
06:41I'm going to say this.
06:42How many, Dean?
06:48Just a five.
06:49And Caroline?
06:50Just a five.
06:51The five is?
06:52Twine.
06:53Twine.
06:54And how'd you get on there, Caroline?
06:55What was yours?
06:55I was going to tweak.
06:57Tweak and twine.
06:58Tweak and twine.
06:59All right.
07:00Very good.
07:01Difficult round.
07:02Difficult round.
07:03How high did you get?
07:04We got a seven, didn't we?
07:05Mm, yes.
07:06But the only seven we could salvage from this, a beatnik.
07:08A beatnik.
07:09Yeah.
07:10All right.
07:10First numbers round of the day.
07:13Dean, our challenger today is an auditor,
07:15so a degree in business specialising in accounting,
07:19going against a retired maths teacher.
07:20This should be good, Caroline.
07:21Off you go.
07:22I'll just go one large, please.
07:25Another.
07:26I can't tempt you otherwise.
07:27One large and five little.
07:29Thank you, Caroline.
07:30First numbers of the day are three, eight, two, six, five,
07:38and the large one, 100.

08:181-1-0, Dean.
08:201-1-0, yeah.
08:21Yes, and Caroline.
08:221-1-0.
08:23Yeah, go ahead, Caroline.
08:24I made the 10 with an 8 plus 2.
08:26Yeah, how'd you make it, Dean?
08:27The exact same way.
08:29Good stuff.
08:30Can you just show us...
08:31I'm only joking.
08:31We should have been able to press the button at an extra time
08:34for a birthday present.
08:35Yeah.
08:35That's rubbish.
08:36It's almost as easy as it gets.
08:37Well, there you go.
08:3810 points in the bag, not even a round of applause
08:40as we get our first Tea Time teaser is Get Delta.
08:44Get Delta.
08:45If your lace isn't this, it'll be at a loose end.
08:48If your lace isn't this, it'll be at a loose end.
08:51MUSIC
08:51Welcome back.
09:08If your lace isn't this, it'll be at a loose end.
09:11Get Delta becomes I-glitted.
09:13I-glitted.
09:14Just quickly clear that up, Susie.
09:15I've always delighted in the fact that there is a word
09:17for that little metal or plastic bit at the end of your shoelace,
09:20which is an ad-lib.
09:21Yes.
09:22Thank you, Susie.
09:23Dean, word to your challenger with a seven-point lead today.
09:26And it's your letters.

10:32I'll stick with a six.
10:34Stick them with a six.
10:35Caroline?
10:36Six.
10:37Six as well.
10:38Dean, the word.
10:39Prongs.
10:40Prongs and Caroline?
10:42I'll stick with prongs as well.
10:44Yeah, sorry.
10:44Yeah.
10:46There you go.
10:47Two-pronged.
10:48What about the next three-corner?
10:49Two-pronged.
10:50Yes, we found an eight.
10:52And it was personas.
10:53Personas for eight, but six points for Caroline and Dean.
10:57And we'll get another letters round from you, champ.
10:59Consonant, please.
11:00Thank you, Caroline.
11:01N.

11:27T.
11:29And a vowel, please.
11:33And lastly, you.
11:35Here we go.
11:36What.
11:37Do a vowel.
11:39It's going to be so, you know,
11:52It's going to be so much.
11:53I'm going to be so.
11:55Two.
11:56It's going to be so.
11:57It's going to be so.
11:57Okay.
11:57Can you hear me?
11:59Just a vowel, please.
11:59And again, here we go.
12:00I think that, maybe I could,
12:02It's gonna be so, right.
12:02THEY CONFER
12:06Caroline.
12:07One, two, three, four, five, six.
12:10Six, and Dean?
12:11I'll risk a six.
12:12What's your word, Caroline?
12:13Jaunts.
12:14Jaunts, and for Dean?
12:16Uncast.
12:17Uncast.
12:19I think uncasted would be there.
12:21Actually, I'm not even sure what that is.
12:24Unicast is there, but not uncast. I'm so sorry.
12:31Well, you've already mentioned unicast.
12:33Yeah, that would have given us a seven.
12:34We were at six as otherwise.
12:35Six in the way you say. Go for it.
12:37We have hunters.
12:38Yeah.
12:39Military hunters, but, yeah, that was actually unicast would be our best.
12:42It's transmission of a data package to a single recipient.
12:45All right.
12:46Second numbers round of the day.
12:47Let's hope just a little bit more difficult than the first.
12:50Dean?
12:51I'll go one large and five little, Rachel, please.
12:54OK.
12:55We're making pigeon steps towards the teapot.
12:57Nobody's gambling yet.
12:58Another one large.
12:59Let's see if you change your tune in the second half.
13:02Right.
13:03Second numbers.
13:0410, 2, 4, 9, 1, and 25 this time.
13:10The target, 926.
13:12Numbers up.
13:13The target, 926.
13:17Numbers up.
13:19And that's time, 9-2-16?
13:469-2-6, not wrote down.
13:48OK, and Caroline?
13:50I've just used the 4 twice.
13:52So nothing there, so 9-2-16 for 10 points.
13:55The 2 by the 4 equals 8, and add on the 9 for 17.
14:0117.
14:02Multiply that by 25 equals 9-2-5, I'm hoping.
14:06Um, 4-2-5.
14:09Oh, I'm going to ask them.
14:11There you go.
14:11Both misfired in that one, 9-2-6, Rachel.
14:15Um, yes, I found a way.
14:1725 plus 1, 26.
14:219 times 4, 36.
14:23Times those together for 936.
14:26And take the 10, 9-2-6.
14:28Nice.
14:29APPLAUSE
14:30So it remains so, so close as we head over to Dictionary Corner, where Ben has been wiring us with magic all week.
14:38And no pressure, it is the birthday magic trick.
14:40So, you know, this is literally performing at a birthday party.
14:44This is it, high stakes, in which case I'm pulling out all the big guns.
14:48In this case, the Rubik's Cubes.
14:50Now, I know you've seen some Rubik's Cubes on the show in the last, well, in this series.
14:54And a lot of people try and solve them quickly.
14:56We're going to try something else.
14:57I'm going to come over here.
14:58Colin, do me a favor.
14:59Take a cube.
15:00You know the drill by now.
15:01Cubes, you mix them.
15:02Give them a little mix.
15:03No worries.
15:03So whilst he's mixing that, by the way, these have been around, this is going to make us all feel a little bit old, 40 years now.
15:09Yeah, we're 41, Rub it in.
15:10Yeah, so it's about birthday time.
15:13And they've been around 40-odd years.
15:15They're in every country in the world, and people love them because they are a brilliant maths puzzle.
15:19Rachel, are you a cuber?
15:20Can you solve the cube?
15:22No.
15:23No, OK, fine.
15:23But that's the thing, they're still an amazing...
15:25Are you happy with that?
15:26No.
15:26No, look at that.
15:27He's not happy.
15:28I am, no.
15:29Perfect good.
15:29That's the competitiveness coming out.
15:30Perfect.
15:31All right, excellent.
15:31And for the record, people think we've set this up.
15:34To be honest, did I ask you to shop for this?
15:36Have we been rehearsing this?
15:36I want you to fail.
15:38Pardon?
15:38I want you to fail.
15:39There's no way I'm collaborating.
15:40Well, that's very nice, isn't it, after we've spent the week together.
15:43But here's the thing, there are billions and billions of combinations of Rubik's Cubes, which is why they're so interesting.
15:49And the odds are, right now, because you mixed it, there is not another Rubik's Cube on this planet that looks like this.
15:55In fact, if I'd have got anyone else to mix it in the studio, we'd have a completely different looking cube.
15:59But what if, even against all those odds, if my cube and your cube, if one of the sides could match?
16:08Wow.
16:08Just one of the sides, or even two of the sides.
16:11Shh.
16:12Or three of the sides.
16:15Or four of the sides.
16:17Go on.
16:17Or five of the sides.
16:20Or somehow, Colin, you've managed to match all six sides.
16:24Come on.
16:26I tell you, I know you've had some speed cubers on here, so I am not going to solve this with two hands like muggles do.
16:31I'm going to do this with one hand.
16:33Yeah.
16:33Do you want my right or left hand, Colin?
16:35What have you...
16:36What's he writing with, Susie?
16:37Right hand, I think.
16:38Left.
16:39Oh!
16:39I knew you were going to say that.
16:41Here we go.
16:42Left hand.
16:55Yes.
16:59Thank you very much.
17:01Oh, you've got to love it.
17:03You've got to love it.
17:04Back to the game.
17:05Caroline, you're up.

19:58OK, back to the numbers, and Caroline, your choice.
20:01I'll just go one large, please.
20:03One point in it, you're sticking with your one large.
20:06And five little ones.
20:08Thank you, Caroline.
20:09And this time, the selection.
20:12Six, one, two, eight, three, and 25.
20:19And the target, 686.
20:21686.
20:22Numbers up.
20:33Six, eight, six, the target.
20:55Caroline.
20:56Six, eight, three.
20:58Three away.
20:59Dean.
20:59I've got nothing.
21:00Off you go, Caroline.
21:02I've just seen I've made a mistake.
21:04Oh, good.
21:05Good to own up to the mistake.
21:07So, 686, all yours, Rich.
21:09Couple of ways.
21:10One, you could have said, three times eight, 24.
21:1324 add 25, 49.
21:17Six plus one is seven, times the remaining two is 14, and 14 times 49 is 686.
21:23Yeah.
21:26Fairly difficult, that.
21:28We just can't separate you two, can we?
21:29It's been that point for a while now.
21:31Love it.
21:32Let's get our second Tea Time teaser of today, and it is Deem Bits.
21:37Deem Bits.
21:38For most people, these change a lot at the weekend.
21:41For most people, these change a lot at the weekend.

22:06Will it be night-night?
22:07Our champion, Caroline McManus.

23:23Seven.
23:24And Caroline?
23:25Eight.
23:26And eight.
23:27Dean, what's the seven?
23:28I've used my G twice.
23:30Used the G twice, the seven becomes a zero,
23:32but Caroline, you looked at me a little apprehensive with that eight.
23:36What have you got?
23:37Darlings.
23:38Darlings.
23:38Darlings are there.
23:40Darlings is there for eight.
23:42There was a lot of activity in the dictionary corner.
23:44Was that for an eight or something better?
23:46No, it's because I thought there was an E and there wasn't.
23:48But we did find one more eight.
23:50A singular eight.
23:52Singular.
23:53Yeah.
23:53Singular.
23:55Singular for eight.
23:56Darlings for eight.
23:57So the lead switches hands.
23:58Still in that crucial countdown conundrum territory.

25:06MUSIC
25:11Caroline? Seven. Seven and Dean? Seven as well.
25:16Caroline, what word did you get?
25:18Charted. Charted and Dean? That's it.
25:21Thank you. Excellent. Seven points each.
25:24Over to Susie and Ben. Yes, there was a nine. Charioted.
25:29Charioted? Who was charioted into the arena.
25:32Oh, yes. Yes. Yes.
25:34APPLAUSE
25:37Really good. Four rounds to go. 53 plays at 46.
25:40But time for our origins of words. Susie Dent.
25:44I've had an email from Dane who asks if the word sodden
25:47is related to the sod that is in the earth.
25:50He says, in Australia, we might describe someone
25:52who has had far too much to drink as being sodden,
25:54and we describe soaked earth as being sodden.
25:57It's the clue in the relationship to the earth and to the land.
26:01And he asks, what is the root verb for sodden?
26:04So, this is a very meaty question.
26:07So, I'm going to go, really, to the root verb,
26:11because this kind of explains everything.
26:13And it's quite a surprise, because the root verb of sodden
26:15is actually seethe, believe it or not.
26:18And to seethe was to boil or to stew.
26:21So, it was all about heat.
26:24But in the olden days, the past tense was not seized, it was sod,
26:28which sounds very strange to us now.
26:30And by the 14th century, sodden had become an independent adjective.
26:34Sodden, meaning boiled through.
26:37In other words, really soaked through.
26:39So, it was all to do with the heat, but also the water.
26:41And by the 16th century, it had taken on that idea of somebody
26:45who was either sort of a little bit ignorant or stupid from drinking.
26:51And today, sodden is commonly used as a synonym of soaked or saturated, really.
26:58And seethe itself then followed a different path
27:01and we gave it a completely different past tense,
27:04which is quite rare, because as you know,
27:06we tend these days just to tick ed on the end of any root,
27:09text, texted, that kind of thing,
27:11rather than stick to those strange past tenses
27:14where we change the vowel, which are the ones that I prefer, as you know.
27:19And as for the sod that is the earth,
27:22that is a completely different root that is related to soil.
27:25But the real surprise there, because I have to say,
27:27I didn't know this until Dane wrote in,
27:29I did not know that sodden is the past tense of seethe.
27:33Thank you, Susie.
27:35APPLAUSE
27:37Four rounds left.
27:39Caroline McManus has had to work so hard
27:41to get any type of lead against young Dean.

27:48Four rounds left. Dean.

30:49Coupler, a thing that connects two things,
30:51especially mechanical components.
30:53You get them on organs,
30:55I think you get them on trains as well.
30:56Yeah.
30:56Yeah.
30:57OK, so it's exactly as we were.
30:59From seven can take me anywhere.
31:01Can take to an eight,
31:03which would be priceful.
31:05Priceful?
31:05Yes, there's a bit of an old word.
31:07Valuable or expensive.
31:09OK.
