00:00But first, let's get into our top sports betting story of the day. It was a quiet year for the
00:04legalization of sports betting in 2025. Could we get a bounce as far as states legalizing online
00:11sports betting here in 2026? Certainly seems possible. Lawmakers in Wisconsin and Mississippi
00:16are expressing belief that online sports betting could come this year. Of course,
00:22in terms of Mississippi, they were one of the first to legalize sports betting in general,
00:25but just in retail in the casinos. So this would generate additional funds to the state
00:30for pensions and healthcare would happen also in Wisconsin as well, something to look forward to
00:35later this year. NASCAR makes a big announcement this morning. Their commissioner, Steve Phelps,
00:39announced his resignation after more than 20 years with a top racing series in the US and a nasty
00:45federal trial, which inflammatory texts that he sent during contentious revenue sharing negotiations
00:50were revealed. He'll leave the company at the end of the month. NASCAR will look for a replacement
00:55there. In terms of the National Basketball Association, the games continue and so are the
01:00rumors. Trade deadline, of course, approaching next month. ESPN reports that Atlanta Hawks all-star
01:05Goward Trey Young and his agents are searching for a potential trade partner, trying to find a
01:13resolution for the all-star to see if he could potentially be moved. See what happens when we
01:18begin trade deadline season, which is next month. The National Football League today had three
01:24coordinators changing locations. The Dallas Cowboys have fired defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus,
01:30who was the head coach of the Bears just last year. It's been fired back-to-back years. And the
01:35Washington Commanders announced that Cliff Kingsbury, their offensive coordinator, has resigned
01:40to seek other opportunities, potentially a head coaching gig. And also Joe Witt Jr., the defensive
01:45coordinator, has been let go. Meanwhile, the Miami Dolphins still have a head coach. It's Mike
01:50McDaniel. He met with the media yesterday. Although he has not gotten a vote of confidence, most people
01:54expect him to stay. Who will be the quarterback for the Dolphins next season? That is the question.
02:00Looks like Tua Tengavailoa is looking for a new start. McDaniel said he's looking forward to a new
02:06competition at that position next season. I think, you know, in 2026, I think there'll be competition
02:16for our starting quarterback. What that is and how it looks, there's a lot that remains to be seen.
02:26You know, we have, it's the most important position on the football field. And you have to make sure that
02:36you do everything possible to get the best person out there on the field. Who that is, whether they're
02:44in-house or somewhere else, you know, that's something that we'll be extremely diligent on.
02:50Um, but I, but I know that, uh, there will be, um, competition for those reins, uh, that much.
02:57And now also looking for a new general manager are the Miami Dolphins these days. Meanwhile,
03:02Dan Campbell with a disappointing season as head coach, the Detroit lions certainly finished on
03:08the right foot, but the season was more or less on the wrong foot, which Campbell says he takes full
03:13accountability for self scout of yourself and everything. But just if I ask, how do you feel
03:18like you did this year on the job being the head coach of the lines? Not good enough. We didn't get
03:22in. I mean, we, we underachieved, so not good. I would give myself a freaking F.
03:29Of all those things you want to deep dive this off season, you know, what, what's the top of the
03:33list? Play calling or a personnel thing or what, what do you need to figure out first, I guess?
03:37Well, the first thing I got to figure out is the staff. I need to make sure that, you know, um,
03:43you know, where do we go from here? You know, I just need to either, I need to, uh,
03:48you know, make sure that I feel good about, uh, you know, where the guys are at, the positions
03:55they're in, or do we tweak a couple of things, move a couple of guys? Do we, you know, we stay
04:01pat? Do we, those are the things I got to sort through that. That's the first for me. That's what
04:05I got to get through. And, uh, just, you know, I got, I got to do, I got to do some digging here.
04:10While the Giants will dig for a new head coach, hiring that head coach presumably will be their
04:16GM, Joe Shane, who will be back another season, despite his 22, 55 and one record as Giants GM
04:24Shane weighed in on another disappointing campaign for his Giants. Yeah, our, for me, it's, you know,
04:31early on, I made mistakes. I'm fortunate to have great ownership here where you're, you're,
04:34you're allowed to stub your toe and try to course correct. And over the last couple of years,
04:39we've been able to add a franchise quarterback. You've been able to add up, you know, number one
04:44receiver in Malik neighbors who, you know, again, I'm looking forward to getting him, him back. And
04:48there are, you know, the defensive line, the pass rushers, there's, there's pieces in place that
04:53also make this an attractive job. So looking at where we're going, where the build is, what the plan
04:58is moving forward and seeing the vision through is, is why I think that's the case, Art.
05:04Move on to the NBA. You see their map, a birthless fired, by the way, I mentioned that earlier. He's
05:09no longer the defensive coordinator of the Cowboys. In terms of the NBA, hottest team go
05:13figure, Los Angeles Clippers. They've won seven of their past eight and are chasing down another
05:19playoff spot after it looked like their season was over. They beat the Warriors 103-102. Steve
05:23Kerr ejected. He's had his issues with the refs lately, but the issues are really how to stop Kawhi
05:29Leonard. 24 points again last night, 12 rebounds, playing like an MVP again. Here's Ty Lue, head coach
05:35of the Clippers talking about their recent hot start. Just staying poised and just trusting,
05:40you know, like, you know, Kawhi and, and James, they're going to demand a lot of attention on the
05:45floor. So those guys to keep trusting, um, making the right play, making the right pass. And, um,
05:49like I said, down the stretch, you know, Kawhi was able to do that and Katie made a big three,
05:53Kobe made a big three. And I thought John Collins, um, was, it was really good. He was poised,
05:57you know, he wasn't really involved offensively early on, um, because of the way they played
06:02defensively, but I thought he just stayed with it, made a big three, um, a big putback,
06:07big blocks. And so, um, he's coming along, you know, really well. And so, um, it was a huge win
06:11for us overall. Whatever. I've never seen it where it's a delayed call. Oh, there was a fail. Oh,
06:16no basket. And then literally the next possession, uh, clear goaltend, you know, seeing the replay.
06:23Um, it's hard to miss both of those and, uh, you know, momentum swing, you know, situation like
06:33that. Coach did the right thing. We responded the right way, gave ourselves a chance to win,
06:40but, um, on the road, that's a tough, tough moment. Meanwhile, the New York Knicks have now
06:46lost four straight games favored again yesterday loss to the Detroit Pistons.
06:50121 to 90. Cade Cunningham had 29 points and 13 assists. J.B. Bickerstaff, after the game,
06:58discussed his team's blowout win. That's what it was about for us tonight. Um, you know,
07:03when we defend that way, it makes our offense easy. Um, we get to play in transition, playing
07:09on broken floor, play with tempo. Um, you know, we'll get what we're looking for offensively.
07:14Uh, but, you know, I couldn't be more proud of the guys. Uh, and it was everybody,
07:18everybody that played, you know, had the right mentality, had the right mindset, understood,
07:23you know, that this was going to be one of our identity games. And if we play to our identity,
07:29we're going to give ourselves a chance to win it. Uh, and I thought we did that tonight.
07:32Uh, it's pretty simple. They just physically kicked our ass. But it's, there's no ifs, ands,
07:40buts about it. We had, uh, uh, 20, 20 turnovers for 33 points. And, um, and, you know, they,
07:49they were into us the whole game. And then for us, uh, we did it in spurts and versus, uh,
07:57a team like that, you can't do it in spurts. It's gotta be 48 minutes. Uh, so it's, it's just
08:01as simple as that. Kevin Durant with a big shot last night to give his Houston Rockets a win over
08:08the Phoenix Suns, his former team final score, 100 to 97. The Rockets did win. They did not
08:14cover the eight and a half point spread. And how about the Hornets picking up a win against the
08:19Thunder? How about this? Oklahoma City has actually lost two games in a row and OKC was 15 and a half
08:25point favorites. They lose 124 to 97. Welcome back to Newswire. Great to have Dustin Gawker in the
08:32house. You can catch him on his sub stack. Make sure you subscribe to it to learn more about the very
08:37latest on sports wagering. And of course this madness with prediction markets. For those of
08:43you unfamiliar, we've been covering it with Dustin. He's rejoined us now here on Newswire Weekly.
08:47Dustin, happy new year. Thank you again for coming on the show. Let's, uh, start off with the most
08:52popular app going right now. It seems like in the app store, it's Kalshi hitting a new record in terms
08:58of trading. So this train still on the tracks and heading in a good spot for them. Yeah. Uh,
09:04with the last week, uh, ending on Sunday, we saw almost $2 billion in trading volume at Kalshi.
09:10That's a record for them, uh, over the past year as they've ramped up their sports betting,
09:14about 90% of that is on sports events, uh, with the rest coming on things like cryptocurrency and
09:19elections and entertainment, all of these other things that they have. Most of this is sports.
09:23They had a $400 million of volume just on the final day of, uh, the NFL season on Sunday. Um,
09:30so obviously still leading into sports and a lot of activity. The question will be, uh, with, uh,
09:35obviously the football season winding down or in the playoffs, fewer games, does all this growth
09:40continue? Uh, and do they just, all these things that they're doing, they're, you know, number one
09:44in the app store for finance apps. A lot of times they are onboarding, onboarding these, these massive,
09:49uh, companies like Coinbase where people can trade on prediction markets too. Does the growth continue
09:53despite the fact that the sports calendar is going to ramp down a little bit here with, uh, with the
09:58absence of football. That will be the question that we're following here in January and February.
10:02We also know that Calci, uh, heading into March madness. That was kind of when they broke through
10:06on the sports betting front, when they had, they allowed betting on the, the, on the NCAA men's
10:10and women's tournaments, had a ton of volume on that, like half a billion just on the, on tournament
10:14games back when they're still kind of getting ramped up. So, uh, it'll be really interesting to
10:18see the track where they're, where, how Calci is doing. Again, a lot of that volume is happening
10:22at Robinhood, a finance app where a lot of these markets are being traded via Calci.
10:26Justin, the big, uh, political story certainly around the world this week was the United States
10:32invading and capturing the president of Venezuela. Holly market was the subject of a lot of discussions
10:39surrounding this because there was a potential insider trading on this. Somebody predicting
10:44essentially when the United States would do something like this, which led to a congressman
10:48putting out a bill on prediction markets. So is this the straw that broke the camel's back?
10:55So to speak something happening in the world of politics and in the United States and abroad
11:00that could potentially bring it down. I don't think it's going to bring it down. I think it's just
11:04another interesting story because we work you and I, and a lot of people talk about this from a sports
11:08betting perspective and how that's how that's what a lot of this is so far. It's sports betting
11:11via an exchange or a prediction market, but all these other things are happening on, on prediction
11:16markets as well, including trading on whether the U S will attack Venezuela, whether the president
11:20of Venezuela will still be in office by X date. These are like a lot of, there's millions of dollars
11:25being traded on these markets on poly market, uh, not again, not here in the U S technically,
11:29but in their rest of the world app. But, um, so yeah, it caused a firestorm because the night before
11:34the night of the attacks, we see a new wallet on a cryptocurrency, uh, place a fairly large bet on
11:41will, uh, will we attack Venezuela? Will the president be out in Venezuela before January 31st?
11:48And this, this account had never traded before. Obviously later that night, we learned that
11:52that, that, that, that Venezuela, we had attacked Venezuela as a country and all this happened.
11:57And the person ended up winning lots of money from that. Um, we don't know that for a fact that
12:02it's an insider trading on this, but the timing of it all makes it sound like it's probably somebody
12:07who had inside information then use that information to trade on it. This is in some ways,
12:11no different than somebody who has inside information in basketball or football trading
12:15on that. Um, except it's not practically illegal necessarily for them to do that, uh, as things
12:20stand, which is why we saw a bill representative Richie Torres, uh, drafted a bill. He'd actually
12:25apparently been working on it for a while. Then saw this stuff that happened at poly market
12:28said, I'm gonna drop this bill. It would prevent federal officials from, uh, trading on prediction
12:33markets. If they have non-material public information, whether this bill gets passed, whether
12:38anybody cares in the current environment seems unlikely to me, but, um, you know, mainstream
12:43news continues to pick this up, you know, CBS news, BBC, uh, national public radio, there's stories all,
12:49all over the place about this. And it's, it'll be fascinating to see, uh, you know, we, we always look
12:53at it as a sports, the sports angle, but like the bigger story is how all this translates into
12:58the world of politics and elections and finance and what goes on there.
13:03So what does the bill look like, Dustin? What would this, what would change? Let's put it that
13:07way. Uh, it would, I mean, it would make it technically illegal. Like you're not supposed
13:12to be doing this, right? Like, but there's no, I guess, law that would say, if you know that we're
13:16going to attack Venezuela, that you shouldn't trade on it. Um, uh, again, poly market is this
13:20happened on poly market, which is not a weird dynamic. Poly market is in the U S you can trade
13:25only sports in the U S they have this website where, you know, billions of dollars are traded
13:29every month on lots of other things. It's technically not in the U S wink, wink. You can
13:33bet on it if you use a VPN and cryptocurrency. Um, but like, it's not clear. It would actually
13:38stop. It would say, if you're a federal official, you have information that the public doesn't
13:42have, you can't go trade on a market. It would make it illegal and create, you know, um, you
13:46know, you could, you could be bad if you did it. Prohibits it in a way that it's prohibited,
13:50uh, in air quotes, like you can't trade on it at Cal sheet, right? Like if you're, you're
13:54technically not supposed to, whether Cal sheet can actually stop any from doing this. We
13:58don't know that either, but I don't like it's, it's a hard thing to legislate. Like
14:02if, if this is, if the bill existed and it became a law, it wouldn't have actually stopped
14:06this. I don't think because somebody can trade on this anonymously, they're using a cryptocurrency
14:10wallet and going to trade on it. So whether it makes a difference, I don't know. And I'm
14:14also pretty skeptical that a bill in the current Congress is going to pass, go anywhere and
14:18pass at the end of the day. So I think it's, it's interesting story, but it's not going
14:21to mean anything in the, in the grand scheme of things. I know you, uh, you know, certainly
14:25you're following this too. Is it possible that the real estate market could jump into
14:30some of the prediction options here? It sounds, all this stuff sounds crazy, right? When we
14:35talk about it, just a little bit crazy, but poly market did a deal with a company called
14:38parcel that does real estate data. And now you're going to be able to trade on real estate.
14:43I guess, not like buy, not buying houses and buying and selling houses, but like what the
14:47real estate market will do. Well, how home prices go up in Miami, right? Like, well, you
14:52can not, you, I don't know if they have that one listed yet, but like in major cities, you're
14:55going to be able to trade on how pro prices are going. And this will be in theory, a really
15:00interesting market in the world where, you know, if you're a home builder or you own homes
15:05or you, or rent homes or anything like you can bet or bet slash trade on what the market
15:11is going to do in your city. And that's kind of interesting. I think it's what lets you hedge
15:14on whether you're the value of your home, the value of your business. Those are, this
15:19is kind of the big picture of prediction markets outside of trading money lines and point spreads.
15:23Like this is an important real world thing where we get real information and let, give
15:28people a chance to like hedge and speculate on what the real estate market is doing without
15:33actually buying a house. So I think it's really interesting whether it ramps up, but you know,
15:37it's a big deal and poly market make it made a big deal out of it. This other company
15:40parcel is leading into it and we'll see how, where it all goes, but fascinating story.
15:44Real estate trading.
15:46Got it. Dustin, thanks again for coming on Newswire. Make sure you subscribe to Dustin's
