Transcript
00:00hey boomer hey good morning guys uh our last regular season victory monday man who would
00:05have thought we were going to have 14 of these i'm i know how are how are the holidays the
00:10holidays were great man i missed you guys last week but then again you know the patriots were
00:14playing a jv team called the jets so there's really no reason to talk about that game and
00:19i know drake may had an unbelievable game against them but uh at the end of the day uh the jets are
00:25who the jets are and they now have the second pick of the draft and the patriots have shown and so
00:30have the chicago bears that you can change your coach and uh you can add a quarterback and the
00:36next thing you know you're in the playoffs well how do you how do you think this patriots team
00:41matches up against the chargers i think it's a good matchup for them uh the chargers are underrated in
00:45terms of their defense their defense is a top five defense where they've really had problems is
00:50protecting justin herbert he's got hit a lot this year they lost both of their tackles
00:55i don't know if they're gonna get one of these guys back i'm not sure but um i think for all
01:00intents and purposes the teams that you really want to stay away from in this first uh this first
01:06round you know for me anyway were the texans um i still think the texans uh present a lot of problems
01:12to a lot of quarterbacks and you know it's uh justin herbert struggled against them trevor lawrence
01:19struggled twice against them uh patrick mahomes struggled against them so the i to me
01:24if you're talking about a both of these teams the rams and the texans who sit in the fifth seed in
01:30their respective conferences are the teams that you would not want to play just simply because
01:35they are balanced you know i'm not i'm not too concerned about cj stroud but i i think this is
01:42really a good matchup for the patriots you like the decision to sit herbert or no big deal there
01:47to me it's no big deal but uh you know you never know what he's dealing with and you know a lot of
01:53teams did this uh yesterday obviously the philadelphia eagles did this yesterday and
01:57you know they use this as this bye week and to give a guy an extra day you know a couple days off
02:02and not risk him to any injury i have no problem with that boomer talk about you know what it means
02:08to go from regular season play and how that's played to now we are in the playoffs and kind of the
02:14the the level of competition and attention to detail and every other little thing takes its step to a
02:21whole nother level yep the intensity is definitely ratcheted up and there's no question about that
02:26and here in the northeast what do you got to do you got to run the ball you got to be able to run
02:29the ball and you got to stop the run now these quarterbacks much like tom brady had proven over
02:3420 years there is going to be five or six moments in a game where a quarterback's going to have to
02:39make a play he's either going to have to use his legs or he's going to have to make a great third
02:43down throw and most of these games are going to come down they're going to be tight in the fourth
02:47quarter and who's ever you know got the lowest heartbeat is the guy that usually ends up winning
02:52so the quarterback no question is the most important player in the field but there are
02:58certain attributes to every team and those attributes are can you run the ball the way
03:02the patriots ran the ball down the dolphin's throat yesterday and can you stop the run and that's why
03:07you know the texans present a problem that's why the broncos present a problem um they do have some
03:12of the best run defense defenses in the league uh patriots are up there they're kind of around
03:18number 10 number eight somewhere in that name so they're they're a quality football team there's no
03:22question about it but if they can run it like they have been running with this two-headed running game
03:27um you know they're going to be they're going to be tough to beat they're going to be really tough
03:31to beat and they can and as as they have proven throughout the year they can go on the road and win
03:36too if they're able to beat the chargers on uh what is it sunday night sunday night boomer a worry you
03:42had for drake may early in the season and kind of throughout is how often he gets hit when you look
03:46at him yesterday do you think that he's grown with his ability to know when to slide uh to evade
03:52getting sacked has he gotten better in your eyes yes he has but you know again you remember we were
03:58talking about this i think four or five weeks ago and i think clearing away matthew stafford was going
04:03to be the mvp at that point in time because the rams had the inside track to the number one seed
04:08they obviously lost it they fell to number five and i said the one thing that really bothered me
04:13about drake may was you know all the numbers are great except for the amount of sacks that he was
04:17taking i'd much rather have a sack than an interception but i'd also rather have it in completion
04:22as opposed to a sack so that's part of the game that he has learned and he is learning on the job
04:28for sure and i'm sure josh mcdaniels is in his ear just telling him saying look i let's all we don't
04:33want what we don't want to do is we don't want to turn it over so i'll take a sack instead of a
04:37turnover but if you can throw it away or if you could take off and run and for sure enough then
04:42you know that's obviously a better outcome for us good time to get this week's drake take from you
04:47and that is presented by your new england chevy dealers together let's drive cam newton is at it
04:52again this time uh referring to drake may as a as just a game manager on his podcast uh how do you
04:59feel about that you know he can game manage my team anytime jesus i mean 14 and 3 that ain't game
05:05management man that is play after play that's consistent outstanding play he's in the running
05:10for the mvp for god's sake and i think it's going to be probably the closest vote ever i mean there may
05:16be some sympathies towards matthew stafford and the length of his career and when you really look at
05:21the two players and you look at their statistics and you look where their teams ended up you looked at
05:26the record or the strength of schedule that the teams played i could i could make an argument for
05:31matthew stafford but then drake may is the first qb to lead the nfl in completion percentage yards per
05:37attempt and passer rating since 2014 tony romo did that and matthew stafford is the second qb in the
05:43past 50 years to lead the league in past yards past tds and td interception ratio the last guy that did
05:50that was 2007 tom brady when he'd won his mvp or his first mvp so i i think that uh this is really
05:58going to be tight and you know i don't really worry about what kim newton says believe me i mean
06:02it's uh it's it's all shock value it's good for him he's got an opinion for some reason he's got it
06:09out for you know drake may i'm not really sure i think i i read it i saw it and i didn't i don't take
06:15it as negatively as most people do i just think it's it's an opinion that you know it is what it
06:22is and it doesn't really matter to me at all boom we're speaking of opinions that don't really matter
06:26is it true though does obviously cam newton takes it a little too far but nationally is there a lot
06:32of people that still doubt this patriots team because of the fact that they had such an easy
06:36schedule well i think mike fraybo will tell you no game is easy in this league and and that would be
06:42right and you know they lost to the las vegas raiders who are getting the first overall pick
06:46of the draft week one think about that for a second um so it just goes to show you you can lose to
06:51anybody on your schedule and so much has to go right for your team you got to be healthy
06:56the teams you got to play against like for instance look who they put against quinn ewers and brady cook
07:01the last two games i mean they should win those games and the defenses should overwhelm those rookie
07:07quarterbacks which and obviously they did so um i just think that there's going to be some
07:13there's going to be a lot of chatter about their strength of schedule and yeah this is what i say
07:19you want to defend it or do you want to validate it so you know you can defend it all you want but
07:24if you go out and you win in the playoffs and you make it to the super bowl you basically have validated
07:28your team if you lose in week one against the the chargers uh i think that also validates the fact
07:36that you had a a week's strength of schedule so it's really up to the team and how they end up
07:42playing and how deep they go into the playoffs as to whether or not anybody's going to really give a
07:46damn when it comes to coach of the year do you lean toward rabel or ben johnson or liam cohen
07:51where where are you on at that yeah it's a really good one you know i i gotta i gotta look at mike
07:56mcdonald seattle i mean well he's done an unbelievable job out there uh sean payton for some reason gets no
08:03of i don't know why and by the way neither does bo nix who had this who tied for the most uh pass
08:08attempts in a league along with uh dak prescott but uh yeah i think it's going to be one of the
08:13four of those guys i think i think it's either going to be mcdonald it's going to be mike frable
08:17or it's going to be ben johnson and and all three would be most deserving if if one of those guys won
08:24coach of the year nobody could argue with the uh the the success that they've had and how they've done
08:30it and what they did and the fact that the patriots are the second seed is just so crazy to me we thought
08:36like way back when they were going to go to the playoffs right remember week one we said they
08:41were going to be a playoff team but the second seed that's crazy well when you think about the first
08:47second and third seed it's kind of nuts when you look at the whole afc but boom you talked about it
08:52if you want to show the rest of the country that you are good you got to go out there and win and
08:56the expectations are you should be able to get past the charges if you do play the texans in
09:02the divisional round what do you got to do to beat a football team like that man i can't believe we're
09:07talking about a game that's not even being on i know i mean you know that that's a no that is
09:12you don't touch the money i don't ever touch the money what do you think the patch what do you think
09:20the patch should do in the first round did you watch it i mean the expectations are that you
09:27should beat the charges right i'm a fan i'm getting ahead of myself i understand i appreciate that
09:33i love your confidence hopefully you got your uh victory monday shirt on i do yeah we both do
09:40we're turning over here uh it's uh steelers steelers advance uh either one or both of those
09:46coaches still have a job at the uh end of the day yeah it's a really hard question you know maybe
09:50maybe the only reason i would think that steve bishotti would let go of john harbaugh is if john
09:56harbaugh wanted to be let go you know maybe he's taking the lamar jackson experience as far as he can
10:01i'm sure he's frustrated this morning you never want to make decisions that are going to be rash or
10:06going to be emotional you got to let a couple days slide by i hope john doesn't go but if john
10:11decides to leave or they decide to fire him if i were the new york giants they'd be the first guy i
10:17hired boomer the most you know he would bring professionalism the fan base would be over the
10:22moon if in fact somebody like that came available and i think he would be the next great head coach
10:28of the new york giants oh i like that boomer one of the most damning stories of the entire season
10:33came in the baltimore sun about a week ago on the performance and preparation of lamar jackson
10:40and i've heard you on this radio station for 20 years talk about tom and how it's so important
10:46that your best player is also your hardest worker what do you think of lamar jackson were you surprised
10:51about the sort of lamar rules they put in place in off-season training 100 really surprised and really
10:57disappointed i don't know how accurate it is and i you know i saw last night sunday night football
11:02he kind of fought back against some of that stuff and all during the week he fought back against some
11:08of that stuff too to me that's that's coming from inside and that may have been to get him motivated
11:14to play this week against the steelers that that also could be part of the reason that that story
11:19came out and you know here's the thing like when i when i hear like people like cam newton talking
11:24about game managers and things like that you know what i want from my quarterback is i want my
11:29quarterback to be the ultimate leader of the team i want him to have the respect of the team and i want
11:34him to be able to go out there and run the offense the way the offense is supposed to be run not helter
11:40skelter not all over the place going through his progressions and that's where drake may just fits
11:46checks every box fits fits every aspect of playing professional quarterback and that's one of the reasons
11:52why i think there's so much respect being thrown at drake may maybe with the exception of cam
11:57newton and this story that came out about lamar jackson was really it was really disappointing
12:02but we talked about it here at wfan and i was saying that i believe it's internal and when some
12:08story like this breaks internally and it makes it into the newspaper locally and then of course online
12:13and everybody has a chance to to read it no pine about it it's not a good look for him i'm sorry and
12:20he's an mvp so there's got to be some truth to it but i also think that there was some motivational
12:25tactics behind it question of the week for boomer brought to you by mcfarland energy the region's
12:30most dependable provider of home heating oil delivery and expert hvac services check them
12:36out at mcfarlandenergy.com uh some reporting that maybe p carroll is likely wanted done here would
12:42tom brady ever take more of an active role there when it when it comes to that franchise i mean he
12:47is a part owner i mean he has a lot to say i know that uh the gm is there most likely because he's
12:53really great friends with tom brady and they had their relationship i believe at michigan and also
12:57down in tampa when tom won his super bowl there so tom's tom has got his fingers all over that
13:03franchise and that's why i wouldn't be surprised if if they do make a change i you know there's going
13:09to be a number of guys out there that are going to be real possibilities now coming around this time
13:15it's going to be brian flores it's going to be clint kubiak it's going to be robert sala again
13:19uh you know depending on what happens with one of these coaches whether or not john harbaugh or
13:24somebody like that uh shakes loose there's going to be opportunities there as well and and maybe
13:30arthur blank now uh last night decided you know i should have hired bill belichick in the first place
13:35when i didn't i mean you know that was a pretty quick turnaround and a pretty quick firing of the
13:40entire front office and and the head coach so what does that tell you yeah all right boomer well
13:46we appreciate the time happy new year you sound full of energy and excited this morning it's uh
13:51must be that ethos money uh
13:53you look good you know i i actually thought they were going to say to me you know why would you
14:03want life insurance and my and honestly my my real uh feeling is that yeah i lost my mom when i was
14:08younger and obviously that had a profound effect on me but more importantly for me at this moment in my
14:14life was because of my son having cystic fibrosis and having to make sure that if something happened
14:20to me that he always had something to fall back on and i and i did do that so the legitimate and the
14:26genuineness is real there 100 and and uh and the check has lots of zeros so that's yes it does
14:32hey boomer what's more difficult going undefeated or going an entire season like the jets without a
14:38single interception yeah thanks thanks for bringing up the jets i'm oh my god what a mess but at least
14:44they got the at least they got the second overall pick so maybe dante moore will be their quarterback
14:48of the future but uh aaron glenn is uh sitting on eggshells right now as we speak i don't think he'll
14:53be fired i think they're going to keep him but their young gm who did a good job during the regular
14:58season making all these trades and bringing all these assets and this is now his time he's got to
15:03he's got to rebuild this roster he's got to do it quick and uh they've already made some mistakes
15:07on some of the players that they tried to bring in last year they'll get rid of those guys
15:11and they're going to start really from the bottom up so they got third or 12 picks in this year's
15:16draft so it's going to be interesting to see what happens here boomer we'll talk to you next week
15:20you got it man see you guys
