Maye the MVP? NFL legend Boomer Esiason joins! The Greg Hill Show!
Transcript
00:00Hey, good morning, guys. Victory Tuesday this week. I didn't think you were going to make it.
00:04You guys are running late this morning or something? What's going on?
00:07No, we've been here bright and early. The snow hasn't started yet. We've done 11 of these
00:12victory mornings so far this season with you, Boomer. 11 of them.
00:16It's been amazing. It feels like Tom Brady's Patriots all over again. And by the way,
00:23you know, just for what it's worth, that's the uniform I used to play against when I was actually
00:27in the league. And I love that look that the Patriots wore last night. I don't know if that
00:30means anything to you guys up there. Yeah, of course. Well, it's like the mid
00:342000s all over again around here. Wiggy actually
00:38has low-rise jeans on.
00:45I'm with you, Boomer. I love the
00:46Pat Patriot. But the feeling is
00:50it's eerily similar, and I get accused all the time of getting ahead of myself,
00:55but I don't have many years left. So
00:56it's just
00:58it's like we're right back there, and
01:00the turnaround is extraordinary, Boomer.
01:03It is extraordinary, and certainly
01:05it's all led by Drake May
01:06and Mike Vrabel and
01:08Josh McDaniels. And when you think about
01:11Drake right now, he leads the NFL
01:12in completion percentage, passing yards,
01:15and passer rating this season. So
01:16that's MVP
01:18territory, guys. The one thing
01:20that I have a knock against, if there is a knock
01:22against Drake May, is he takes a lot of sacks.
01:25And he's one of the more sacked quarterbacks
01:27in the league, and the reason for that
01:28is because, you know, he's trying
01:30to make extra plays. He's holding on to the
01:32ball, and that's something that he'll have to work
01:34through. It's the only thing that I see.
01:36It's a little bit of a blip. It's one of the reasons why
01:38his completion percentage is so high.
01:40When you compare his
01:42sacks taken compared to, say, like
01:44Matthew Stafford or Sam Darnold
01:46and even Dak Prescott,
01:49I mean, he's got at least
01:50two times more sacks
01:52taken. But, you know, those are things that,
01:54you know, if you're going to hold on to the ball,
01:57just don't fumble it and don't
01:58do stupid things like Max Brosmer
02:01did for the Minnesota Vikings this past
02:03week. So he's learned not
02:05to throw interceptions. That's a good thing.
02:07But if you hold on to it and you end up
02:08throwing that deep ball like he threw to Williams
02:11last night, I'm okay
02:13with it. I mean... But what a catch
02:15by Williams, and it was the only catch of the night
02:16for him. And, you know, look,
02:18the Giants are a terrible team. Let's face
02:20it. You know, they fired two sets of coaches.
02:22The head coach, the defensive coordinator,
02:24their roster is not
02:26great. They're learning with a young quarterback
02:28who I think can be really good in this
02:30league. And, you know, quite frankly, a couple
02:32things happened last night that
02:34tell me just how good the
02:36Patriots are. One was the hit
02:38by Ellis on Jackson
02:40Dart. So Jackson's not supposed to be taking hits
02:42like that. He's got to be smarter.
02:44But Ellis did the right thing. He hit
02:46him right. He hit him clean. And then after
02:48that, you see the Giants react to
02:50it. And what do you see Ellis do?
02:52He just kind of tries to walk away.
02:54He walks away. You know, that is like top
02:56end coaching. That is convincing your players
02:58that you don't react
03:00when another team reacts to you,
03:03especially when you do something
03:04that's legal. So the
03:06poise, the control, the concentration,
03:08the understanding, you know, that reminds
03:10me of the great Patriot defenses in
03:12past years that Mike Brayvill was a
03:14part of. They were so smart
03:16and they never got embroiled in nonsense
03:18like that. So that's one thing.
03:20And the second thing is, it's just
03:22what eight different receivers last
03:24night. The ball's coming out of his hand
03:26perfectly. Troy Aikman was talking
03:28about, you know, the accuracy of
03:30Drake May. It is apparent. It's obvious
03:32to all of us who have played the
03:33position. And then I guess finally, I
03:35have to see how you guys reacted to
03:37this was the young way coup
03:39non-attempted field goal where he
03:42jams his foot into the ground. Have
03:44you ever seen a kicker miss the
03:46ball like that? So, so
03:48Troy Aikman said, I don't think I've
03:49ever seen that. And the moment he
03:51said that I started belly laughing
03:53because it was so funny and they
03:55didn't know how to call it or
03:57anything until they came back from
03:58commercial and they realized it's a
03:59sack. I've never seen that before.
04:01No. He looked like Shime on the
04:04golf team trying to hit a ball and
04:06taking like 10 feet of tea with
04:10them. I, it was, that was the butt
04:12fumble of place kicks. It seemed
04:14like he thought that they didn't
04:16hold the ball correctly. It was
04:17trying to give more time to kind of
04:19adjust. I don't know what he
04:20thought. Six inches behind the ball.
04:23I know. I know. That was, that,
04:25that was incredible. I mean, like I
04:27said, I was legitimately laughing,
04:29like belly laughing when Troy said
04:31what he said. So, I mean, so the
04:33Giants are going one way and, you
04:35know, we're down here trying to
04:36explain that maybe the Giants can
04:38be next year's Patriots. They do
04:40have a young quarterback that can
04:41play. You can see that their
04:43offensive line is actually pretty
04:45good. They don't have their best
04:47player, Malik neighbors. They got
04:48a number of draft choices next
04:49year. They're going to have to
04:50spend some money in free agency
04:52and they're going to have to do it
04:53like new England did it this past
04:54season. I mean, I, everything that
04:56new England did this off season,
04:58you know, you give an a plus to, I
05:00don't know where they may have
05:01missed on a player here or there,
05:03but from the additions via free
05:07agency, the draft, you know,
05:09Travion Henderson, this group of
05:11wide receivers that, you know,
05:13doesn't really have, you know, the
05:15Justin Jefferson type player, but
05:17just has, you know, guys that are
05:19going out there making plays when
05:20they get the ball thrown to them.
05:21The tight ends are great. The
05:23offensive line, even missing two of
05:25their starters yesterday, really had
05:27a really a great game against a
05:29pretty active giant defensive line.
05:31And then of course they got a
05:32quarterback that's up for MVP. So
05:34everything's going in the right
05:35direction.
05:35Well, speaking of that quarterback
05:37time for boomers, Drake take this
05:40week brought to you by your new
05:41England Chevy dealers together.
05:43Let's drive this season by itself
05:46up to this point, 13 weeks in
05:48ranked the top five quarterbacks
05:51currently in the NFL for me.
05:53And well, he's good. He's, he's
05:55going to be in a top five. There's
05:56no question about it. I think you'd
05:58have to have Matthew Stafford up
06:00there. You're going to have to
06:01have Drake may up there. You're
06:03going to have Dak Prescott up
06:04there. Um, you know, other than
06:07that, I would probably say Jared
06:10golf's having a great year, although
06:11their team is, you know, kind of
06:13floundering Sam Darnold, believe it
06:15or not. Uh, Josh Allen, of course,
06:18would you have Daniel Jones up
06:19there? Uh, no, uh, I don't. Um, I
06:22mean, I'm, uh, you know, I've seen
06:23enough of Daniel Jones over the last
06:25four or five years down here. I mean,
06:27he's playing good. Don't get me
06:28wrong. And he's playing hurt and
06:30their team is starting to go the
06:31other way. The team that I really
06:34am impressed with right now, as we
06:35sit here in the AFC and they're on
06:37the outside looking in, but they can
06:38win their division is the Houston
06:40Texans, the Houston Texans. And
06:42well, you know, this, this, this,
06:44this defense is basically assaulting
06:46people. Yep. And if CJ Stroud can
06:48just get a little bit better, I mean,
06:50just a little bit better and not
06:52throw crazy interceptions or, or
06:55fumble the ball or look with the
06:57bad body language on the sideline.
06:59If he could just become the guy
07:01that we saw in his rookie year,
07:03they will be a tough team. Mark
07:05my words that that may be the AFC
07:07championship game. And I know
07:08Mike Frabel doesn't want to hear
07:10these things, but maybe it's Texans
07:12versus Patriots at new England. I
07:14mean, that's how good I think the
07:15Texans are coming on here late in
07:16the season.
07:17Boom. And one of the things that I
07:18really saw from Drake may last
07:20night is that, you know, he does
07:22take a lot of sacks, but he's also
07:23taking care of himself when he
07:24becomes a runner, unlike, and we
07:26talked about the chef today,
07:27Jackson dot. He, I mean, I like
07:29him. I think the kid has talent,
07:31but I don't know how long he's
07:32going to survive playing as
07:33reckless as he does.
07:35You know, he plays like Josh
07:36Allen played his rookie year.
07:38He's just not as big as Josh
07:39Allen. So Drake is six, two, two
07:4115, two 20, depending on how
07:43heavy they, the, the diamonds
07:44around his neck are. Um, and then
07:47he, uh, you know, Josh Allen is
07:49six, five to 40. So he plays
07:51like Josh Allen, believe it or
07:53not, he's just not as big as
07:54Josh. So he's going to learn.
07:55I mean, you know, he's a crash
07:57test on me right now. He is a
07:58rookie, uh, rookies tend to,
08:01you know, think that they can do
08:02things that, uh, that they're
08:03incapable of doing and don't
08:05really understand the speed that
08:07opposing defenses have. So, I
08:09mean, it's the school of hard
08:10knocks. He'll learn. Uh, I
08:12mean, if he doesn't learn, then
08:13he's going to be out of the
08:13league. So, uh, it's going to
08:15be a big part of, uh, his
08:16maturation. And I see a lot of
08:18Drake may in him, believe it or
08:20not guys. I mean, his, his
08:22accuracy is really good. He's
08:24got great touch on the ball. He's
08:25got a really strong arm. Uh, when
08:27you watch him in slow motion and
08:29you watch the release, I mean,
08:30you could see that the giants
08:31have their guys. So if we were
08:33sitting here last year and we
08:34were talking about the Patriots,
08:36it was another loss. It was
08:37another loss. Drake may through
08:38too many interceptions. Is
08:39Drake may going to be the
08:40future. Is he good enough? Well,
08:42guess what? They, they
08:43surrounded him with really good
08:44coaching, really good defense, a
08:46solid running game, good wide
08:48receivers. And he has matured
08:50into one of the best players in
08:51the league at his position. So
08:53I would think that would be the
08:54same for the giants next year.
08:56Boomer, what's the deal with
08:57Abdul Carter? What are the
08:58whispers in New York saying
09:00about what's going on with him?
09:02Scatterbrain, you know, missing
09:03meetings, uh, late. I'm sure
09:05he's late for morning meetings. Um,
09:07I'm sure that, you know, I, this
09:09is also the new athlete that
09:11coaches have got to deal with. And
09:13maybe Brian Dayball turned his
09:15back to some of it and just
09:16kind of was okay with it. And
09:18I think that's probably one of
09:19the reasons why he ended up
09:21getting fired. And I think that
09:23Mike Kafka is trying to put his
09:24foot down, you know, even though
09:26it didn't go well last night,
09:27Kafka is trying to instill some
09:29discipline within the football
09:31team. We haven't had one iota of
09:34this out of the New England
09:35Patriots. And this is the
09:37difference between winning and
09:38losing. The Patriot player
09:39doesn't want to go to work now
09:41late, doesn't want to miss a
09:42meeting. He wants to be a part of
09:44winning and going to a
09:45potential Superbowl and being a
09:47really good football team is
09:48where the giants are complete
09:50opposite. They are a losing
09:52team. They've had a losing
09:53record the last three years. Uh,
09:55and there's a reason for that.
09:57And some, sometimes internally
09:59it's when players get lazy, they
10:01miss meetings. Uh, they sleep in
10:03meetings. Uh, they miss
10:04assignments continually. And I
10:07think that's, you know, it's part
10:08of the frustration of, of dealing
10:09with rookies. And like I said
10:11before our colleague down here,
10:13Tiki Barber adamantly says on his
10:16radio show that he hates rookies
10:18or hated rookies because they
10:20don't know what the hell they're
10:21doing half the time. And I would
10:23think that's where, uh, Abdul
10:24Carter is right now, Courtney. And,
10:26um, I'm glad that my calf is
10:27actually bringing to the forefront
10:29because he's got to answer a lot of
10:31really tough questions.
10:32Not to pry boomer, but does the
10:34prospect of Andy Reed tickling your
10:37tonsils, get you at all excited for
10:39the last five weeks of the NFL
10:41season?
10:42Nothing tickles my tonsils. Uh, I've
10:45never been asked that question. Um,
10:48I mean, it was an odd way for him to
10:51phrase it, but I guess what he's
10:53saying is, uh, we're not out of it.
10:55So, uh, well, he has to say that
10:57and they are not out of it. Uh, they
10:59have to win their division and
11:01Patrick Mahomes has got to believe
11:02he's got to win every single game.
11:03As he said, after their loss on
11:05Thanksgiving to the, to the Cowboys,
11:07I think there are a couple of
11:08teams that are surging right now
11:09and the Texans, the Cowboys are
11:10too off the top of my head. And I
11:13think that, you know, Kansas city
11:14has got a hell of a schedule ahead
11:16of them and their schedule is
11:18tough. I mean, and when you think
11:20about who they are in terms of,
11:22you know, what they have been able
11:24to accomplish over the last five
11:25years, you know, this, this could
11:26be the end of it. I mean, this
11:27could be at least for this year
11:29anyway, they can bounce back next
11:31year for sure. But I, I think
11:32their schedule is so difficult guys
11:34they, they have, so they got to
11:37play at Las Vegas. So that's a
11:39game they probably will win. But
11:41when I take a look at some of this
11:43stuff, they got Houston this week,
11:44they got the chargers, Tennessee,
11:47Denver, and Vegas. So you got three
11:49teams in there that I think they
11:51got to win all three of those
11:52games, Texans chargers and, and
11:55Broncos. I don't see them winning
11:56those three games. Matter of fact,
11:58I love Houston this weekend. And I
12:00think it's a Sunday night game
12:01Boomer, Courtney and I really
12:04enjoyed your take on the ACC and
12:07Big Ten's need to stop playing
12:09Notre Dame and allowing them to
12:10take one of the college football
12:11playoff spots. I just think it is,
12:13it is pathetic how Boston College
12:16and the other teams in the ACC
12:17allow Notre Dame to walk all over
12:20them and use them to get advantage
12:22in the playoff. Thank you very
12:23much. You know, and as a
12:24University of Maryland alum, you
12:26know, we're in the Big Ten and
12:28the Big Ten, you know, they've
12:29expanded now to all these teams. I
12:31wouldn't play Notre Dame at all. I
12:33would say every team has to play
12:34within the division 12 times or
12:37whatever, 10 times and Notre Dame
12:39can't be a part of it. So Notre Dame
12:41has always had an advantage. They've
12:42always had that separate deal with,
12:45with NBC and it's always put them on
12:48national TV every single week. So I'm
12:51sorry. I mean, I know they're really
12:52popular. I admire their coach. This
12:55has nothing to do with the coach or
12:56the players. This has everything to do
12:58with, you know, how conferences are
13:02treating different teams and why a
13:04certain team gets to do their
13:06certain thing their way when
13:08everybody else is trying to follow
13:09suit and trying to create a bigger
13:11pie for teams like the University of
13:13Maryland and teams like Boston
13:14College. So I, you know, we're, we're
13:17stuck in the lower third of, of the
13:20major college football programs and
13:23we're never going to catch up. There's
13:25never going to be a Maryland Boston
13:26College national championship game.
13:28Let's face it. It's just not going to
13:30happen. Rutgers is not going to be
13:31there. Indiana, well, Indiana may be
13:33there, but schools like that are just
13:35not going to make it. If Indiana can do
13:37it and it looks like, you know, they're
13:39in a great position, I think schools
13:42like Maryland, BC, some of these other
13:44schools should have some type of
13:46excitement. Obviously you just got to do
13:48things differently. I mean, Indiana has
13:50been known as a basketball school as far
13:52back as I can remember. Yeah. Maryland's
13:55like that too, by the way, Maryland was
13:57always thought of as a basketball school
13:59first. I mean, we had a nice run in the
14:01eighties and then Ralph Regin came back
14:03who was my offensive coordinator back in
14:05the, the early eighties. He came back and
14:07had a nice run in the two thousands, but
14:09in this day and age, uh, there's just not
14:12the money, but I mean, under armor is some
14:14of the money behind it. Kevin Plank, a
14:16former, uh, Maryland player, but you can't
14:18keep going back to him. I mean, you know,
14:20you gotta, you gotta get other people
14:21involved in this. The no money is just
14:24not there. I mean, the facilities are
14:25great, but a lot of these kids want to go
14:27play in these hundred thousand seat
14:29stadiums and Maryland's got a 55,000 seat
14:32stadium. Boston's got a 55,000 seat
14:34stadium. It's, it's just not what it used
14:36to be. And the playing field is not level.
14:39The other big thing about the big 10 is
14:41that big 10 was getting ready to sell
14:43about 10% of their media rights for about
14:46$2.3 billion. And each team was going to
14:48get around 190 with the top tier teams.
14:51And this is in the big 10, Michigan,
14:53Ohio state and Penn state, we're going
14:54to receive like 210 million and Michigan
14:57backed out like, like there's something
14:59special or something like that. That
15:01money would have been huge for the
15:02university of Maryland and Rutgers and
15:04Northwestern and schools like that. But
15:07there's never going to be a national
15:08championship. Like I said, between
15:10Boston college and Maryland, and I would
15:11not allow Notre Dame, uh, to push us
15:15around or anybody around and make it into
15:17the college football playoff over a
15:19school, say like Miami who beat them
15:21earlier in the year.
15:22Finally, question of the week for
15:24Boomer brought to you by McFarlane
15:26Energy, the region's most dependable
15:27provider of home heating oil delivery
15:29and expert HVAC services at
15:32McFarlaneEnergy.com.
15:3420,000 Steeler fans chanting fire Mike
15:39Tomlin on Sunday. Should they?
15:42Oh boy. Um, will they is more of the
15:46question? Um, the Rooney family doesn't
15:48get pushed into making harsh decisions.
15:50Um, I, I kind of feel like depending on
15:54how the season ends, if they don't make
15:55it to the playoffs with Aaron Rodgers, um,
15:58I, I could see where this thing has ran
16:00its course. You know, Marvin Lewis had
16:03his run in Cincinnati for 15 years. Bill,
16:06Bill, uh, Cower had his run. He decided
16:08to leave himself by the way. Um, you know,
16:11eventually your message falls on deaf ears.
16:14So they too, like many other teams that
16:17are stuck in this malaise are, are so
16:20because they can't find their young
16:22quarterback like Drake may or Jackson
16:24dart. So depending on how this thing
16:26ends, I wouldn't be surprised if, uh, if
16:28the Steelers decide to go in a, in a
16:30completely different direction.
16:32Boomer, great to hear your voice. We will
16:34talk to you again next week.
16:35Oh, that makes me feel really good. Um,
16:37victory Tuesday boys and girls. Yes, sir.
16:41I love every minute of it.
