Transcript
00:00It's Houston Methodist, Heineken, and Cajada Casino Resort.
00:06Five seconds to go. First down Colton there, 25.
00:09Leonard over the middle. He goes to Josh Downs.
00:11Takes it across the 30. Ladder is back to Pittman.
00:14Pittman throws it back to Leonard, and Leonard is going to be sacked.
00:18He gets rid of the ball. Togiai picks it up.
00:21Togiai across the five. Togiai into the end zone.
00:25Touchdown, Tommy Togiai to end the game!
00:29And the Texans win their 12th. What a way to finish the season!
00:34There was no going down for Tommy Togiai.
00:39Tommy Togiai was going to house that baby, and that's exactly what he did.
00:44Oh, the entire team celebrating in the end zone with Tommy Togiai.
00:50Nine wins in a row for the Texans as they wrap up the regular season with a...
00:56And saying a week long that the probable outcome today will be Jacksonville beats Tennessee.
01:03That happened, and the Texans beat the Colts.
01:06That happened, and then we all watched tonight to see who the Texans are going to face in the first round of the playoffs,
01:12the wild card round, the winner of the Ravens-Steelers game tonight.
01:15That is what is going to end up happening.
01:18It was a much more circuitous route to get there here today at NRG Stadium.
01:23Whatever was going on in Jacksonville went according to plan.
01:25Whatever went on here was a back and forth that ended up being a whole lot of fun to watch
01:29because the Texans end up on top in the final play of the regular season.
01:33Probably appropriately in some way was Tommy Togiai scoring a touchdown for the Texans.
01:38It's 38-30, the final score of the Texans.
01:40Win today, they clinched the most wins in franchise history with 12 in the regular season.
01:46They have an ongoing winning streak right now that will carry into next season,
01:50a nine-game winning streak that they'll try to break the record in week one next year.
01:55Most importantly, they're going to be the five-seed in the AFC,
01:57and we wait to see who wins between the Ravens and the Steelers tonight
02:00as to where the Texans will be traveling.
02:02We'll know all the where and when by the time the NFL closes out the regular season tonight.
02:07Good to be with all of you here.
02:08Texans postgame here on Texans Radio from the Hyundai Texan Studio presented by Reliant.
02:13I'm Sean Pendergast alongside Clint Sterner.
02:15Clint, I don't know if there's a ton to take away from this game here today
02:18as far as how it impacts whoever they play next week,
02:21but I think the Texans, my big takeaway is at the five-seed,
02:25they're not going to win the division.
02:26I think they're in a great spot heading into the postseason.
02:29No, they're in a tremendous spot.
02:30Like you said, you won nine in a row.
02:31You won 12 of the last 14.
02:33You somehow resurrected the season after starting 0-3.
02:36You've been in a great spot.
02:37You've got more moment ball right now.
02:39And with this defense, you've got one of the best,
02:42if not the best unit in all of football right now.
02:45And so, yeah, I think they're in a great position.
02:47Like you said, the five-seed obviously going to play either Pittsburgh or Baltimore,
02:52which I think if you had to hand-select an AFC playoff team right now,
02:55you would probably hand-select those two teams to play.
02:58Maybe the L.A. Chargers.
02:59I know you can't because they're wild cards as well.
03:01But I'm talking about the seven-team AFC pool right there.
03:05You would probably pick Pittsburgh or Baltimore, given how their season's gone.
03:09So, yeah, man, the Texans sit in a tremendous spot right now.
03:13Today was very interesting, Sean.
03:15Today was very interesting.
03:16Everybody that I ran into that follows the Texans, watches them closely,
03:20whether it's fans or media members, we're talking about, hey, man,
03:25don't we need to win this game?
03:27I know Jacksonville's winning and we can't win the division,
03:31but don't we need to win this game for seeding in a sense of where we have to go
03:34in the playoffs?
03:35And I was like, yeah.
03:36I mean, I would think so.
03:37I'm not real sure that I understand the approach,
03:40given that that was what was at stake.
03:41But it at least made for a good conversation piece and a hell of an ending
03:45with Tommy Togia getting tugged.
03:47Yeah, I wasn't wild about them pulling guys at halftime of this game.
03:50Well, I knew.
03:51Of a one-score game.
03:51When I walked in, I heard them announce that Nico Collins wasn't playing.
03:57And I thought, well, that's interesting.
03:58Maybe there's a little something there and maybe that's injury-related.
04:01Maybe there's something that's tender, something that's been bothering him.
04:05Well, then all of a sudden you look up and there's guys getting yanked left and right.
04:07And then after halftime, it was – I mean, the defense was full of twos and beyond.
04:12And so –
04:13They finished the game playing with seven defensive backs.
04:15Yeah.
04:15In their base defense.
04:18I was one of those – I mean, I don't know how to take it other than D'Amico Rines
04:22and Nick Casario feel very comfortable either going to what could have amounted to –
04:27now, I don't know how this thing's all going to unfold –
04:28but what could have amounted to be in Denver.
04:31But really, any of the top four seeds.
04:34Jacksonville mathematically can still be the number one seed in the A.
04:37Right, right.
04:38If the Patriots and the Broncos both lose this afternoon.
04:40Yes.
04:41So, I mean, it could have been any of those teams.
04:43Clearly, he didn't feel as strongly.
04:45The team didn't feel as strongly about Pittsburgh.
04:47The advantage of going to Pittsburgh and Baltimore is, I think, the rest of his team.
04:49Yeah, I definitely – well, I definitely think there's a mentality to this team that is –
04:53we don't care who we play and where we play and when we play them.
04:55Line up the ball and we're going to – ours against yours and we feel like we can win.
04:59That's right.
04:59And they've won in plenty of tough, hostile environments this year
05:02and against good teams both here and on the road to feel that way, I suppose.
05:07I just think there's such a difference in the AFC right now
05:09of getting the winner of that Baltimore Steelers game
05:11versus having to go to Jacksonville or Denver or New England.
05:14I just – I don't have a ton of fear of those two teams as I do the other three teams.
05:20Well, I mean, Sean, you look at Denver and New England
05:22and I know they maybe had some ups and downs of late,
05:25but you look at them, those have been two of the best teams in the AFC from the start this year.
05:28This isn't a flash in the pan.
05:29And those are really, really good football teams.
05:32And then, you know, you look at Pittsburgh and Baltimore.
05:36I mean, they've been – I mean, Pittsburgh's been up and down.
05:38Baltimore's been just downright the worst team in the AFC at times
05:41when they had all the injuries.
05:43And so, yeah, nonetheless, you're sitting in a great spot.
05:46I mean, we can talk it six ways this Sunday.
05:48And we will.
05:49And today is Sunday, so here we are.
05:51But, you know, they've landed in a tremendous place getting the win today
05:55and locking up, you know, a match-up either in Pittsburgh or in Baltimore.
05:59No question.
06:00I'm stoked about it.
06:01That's a hell of a card to draw right now in this AFC.
06:04Can't wait.
