00:0019-17 in frustrating fashion. They came back, they took the lead, they gave it up inside the final 30
00:07seconds on a 53-yard field goal as Indy prevails.
00:12Dallas next week at Reliance Stadium.
00:15For us, it's 0-3 start. As a team, wherever we are, it all starts with me.
00:21So, right now it's not good enough from our perspective, but I like the way our week went, our process
00:27went well this week.
00:29Our guys connected, our guys brought the joyful intensity that I was asking them to bring throughout the week and
00:35also today on game day.
00:37We came up short today, and I got to get back to the drawing board, and I got to do
00:41a better job.
00:42And that's how yesterday went. It was good for the Astros, it was bad for the Texans, it was bad
00:47for Texan fans, and the team is 0-3 again.
00:50And this is a different 0-3 than last year's 0-3. You're going to get fed a lot of,
00:53well, we've been here before,
00:55and unfortunately, sadly, we've been here before, and we've had to adjust to this, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
01:00This, make no mistake, for a variety of reasons, this is a different 0-3 than last year's 0-3.
01:06So we welcome you in on a reaction Monday here on 95.7 The Fan.
01:09Nice to be with all of you. We appreciate you getting up with us.
01:11We're all in this together, commiserating over the Texans and celebrating over the Houston Astros,
01:16and we'll do both this morning here on the show, I promise.
01:19We're with you until 8 a.m. this morning before we hand it over to Mark Vandermeer and John Harris.
01:22I'm Sean Pendergast. He is Seth Payne. He is rocking his 95.7 The Fan gear this morning.
01:27Hello.
01:28Hey, I'm representing.
01:29You're welcome.
01:29This was just a miserable, miserable loss.
01:33And, you know, I say that with so many different areas that we could attack.
01:38I mean, trying to figure out who I'm most upset with at any given time.
01:44Like, check in with me 90 seconds from now.
01:46So, like, Nick Haley, I don't know if he has a clue what he's doing,
01:52but I also have to give him a partial excuse because the offensive line sure as hell doesn't know what
01:56they're doing.
01:58The construction of the team as a whole.
02:02The wide receivers who, A, can't separate, but, B, they make up for it by not being able to catch
02:07the football either.
02:08Yeah.
02:09That is, like, with their ping-pong paddle hands.
02:12And I'll add the CBS broadcast to the mix, too.
02:16That was maybe one of the worst NFL broadcasts I've ever watched, including COVID.
02:21It was disgustingly bad, partly because of that stupid stadium that they play in, which doesn't even –
02:27a lot of – sometimes, you know, like the old Texas stadium, it would be tough because there would be
02:32a glare from where the sunlight was,
02:34and then there would be the shadows.
02:35Yeah.
02:36But that stadium just had 29 different situations like that.
02:40And you just couldn't tell.
02:41In the midst of a play, you'd lose the ball, you'd see the ball, you'd lose the ball.
02:45I think CJ had some nice throws on the sideline that the Texans' wide receivers batted away.
02:50But I couldn't tell because of the glare.
02:52And then the CBS broadcast chose instead to show me 29 shots of CJ getting hit as he was throwing
02:57the ball.
02:58Yeah.
02:58That's what I'm upset about this morning, those things.
03:01Those are things –
03:01Oh, no, no, no, no.
03:02I'm sorry, Sean.
03:04Go.
03:04Yeah.
03:04No, the biggest one, D'Amico at the end.
03:07Just letting 35 seconds roll off the clock.
03:10That's what I should have led with.
03:11I just – I was kind of going through it in my mind chronologically.
03:15Yeah.
03:17This team might just not know what they're doing.
03:19Yeah.
03:19They might just not know what they're doing.
03:20Yes.
03:21No, D'Amico, right?
03:22That's why I was – you were listing all those things, all of which I agree with, by the way.
03:26All of the player things, this is a D'Amico Ryan's loss.
03:31This is a – there's plenty of blame to dole out, but this is the scariest one if you're a
03:36Texan fan.
03:37And I don't want to hear about the joyful intensity either.
03:39Save that.
03:40You got Will Anderson talking about the joyful intensity.
03:42I don't want to hear about the joyful intensity that they practiced with.
03:46You're 0-3.
03:47And I can tell you nobody out here on these streets wants to hear about your joyful intensity.
03:52You're hunkered down, preparing for Dallas now.
03:55You're – you know, you don't hear what's going on on the outside because – what did Andre say?
04:00He said something about, CJ, I'm a coach.
04:02I'm hunkered down and I'm getting ready.
04:04I didn't hear anything.
04:05So if you're that hunkered down, let me tell you what's going on out here.
04:08People don't want to hear about your joyful intensity.
04:10People are miserable right now because this is an 0-3 team that actually looks like a bad football team.
04:17When they fell to 0-3 last year, if you recall, Seth, they went on the road in the division
04:21to Jacksonville.
04:22Similar to the way they went on the road in the division yesterday to Indianapolis.
04:25They lost a game where they turned the ball over three times in Jacksonville territory.
04:29And you look at that game, you go, okay, well just stop turning the ball over in enemy territory three
04:33times.
04:34And you were doing good things in that game.
04:36This was a game yesterday.
04:38I think even if Spencer Schrader misses that field goal at the end of the game, you know, if he
04:42duck hooks the 53-yarder –
04:44and by the way, where was this pulled groin on this kid that I heard about during the broadcast?
04:48I think that's the problem.
04:49I think the Texans analytics staff or somebody who was actually factoring in this pulled groin, which never materialized.
04:56The kid's hitting it halfway up the net from 50-plus.
04:58Schrader was money all day long.
04:59He was money all day long.
05:00Including a 58-yarder that he had already kicked.
05:03Right.
05:03It would have gone from 70.
05:05Right, which is when exactly when the Texans had to make the decision to call a timeout
05:10and they just let the clock keep running.
05:13They were already in field goal range.
05:15Yeah, so we'll get to all that.
05:19But I'm telling you right now, the whole joyful intensity and this and that, this is a bad football team.
05:23And they would have been a bad football team even if Spencer Schrader misses that field goal yesterday.
05:27This is why I said last week, even if they beat the Colts, they're still more up against –
05:32they're behind the eight ball more even at one and two than they would have been at the 0-3
05:36last year.
05:37The 0-3 last year, I looked at them like, okay, this is a very good defensive team
05:41with pieces on the offense that's just not making the plays when they need to at the end of the
05:47game.
05:47This is a team, the Texans, this is a team that had 81 yards through three quarters of a game
05:54against a team that had given up over 500 yards in each of its first two games.
05:58When they played good football teams.
06:00Yeah.
06:00That's the key.
06:01Yeah.
06:01When they played good football teams, they let up 500-plus yards.
06:05They're not playing a good football team.
06:07Right.
06:07The Colts were playing – and you and I both hammered this yesterday.
06:12Do you know how hard it is to lose a game in which you're plus three in the turnover margin?
06:17Like that's – you could say, man, oh, yeah, but the offense got it going in the fourth quarter.
06:21Right.
06:22One of those things was a Will Anderson slash Daniil Hunter strip sack.
06:25Yeah.
06:25We can argue about whether – which of those guys caused it, but they got the ball moving finally,
06:31blessedly, in the fourth quarter when it ended up being too little too late.
06:34Yep.
06:35And you're plus – like teams, you lose – when you're plus three in the turnover margin,
06:41you lose 9% of the time.
06:42And that factors in teams like the Chargers yesterday who were a bad football team.
06:48Those are the types of teams that lose when they're plus four in the turnover margin.
06:52You had every chance and opportunity in the world to take advantage of those things,
06:56and you didn't.
06:57You just – you flat out didn't.
06:59Twice when you turned the ball over, you didn't do anything with it.
07:01You finally did something in the fourth quarter.
07:03That right there, I mean, losing a game when you're plus three in the turnovers,
07:08it's just – it's unforgivable.
07:09It's unforgivable.
07:11And this is the thing.
07:12And this is why D'Amico's going to take some today.
07:14Not just the in-game decisions, which we'll get into in a second.
07:18I think the lack of desire to answer for them in the postgame is very annoying.
07:23He did it last week when he was asked about kicking a 58-yard field goal
07:26instead of going for it on fourth and inches.
07:28And he just kind of sloughed it off and didn't address it.
07:31And he really does take umbrage with being questioned on game management decisions.
07:35It's annoying.
07:37He's happy to talk about joyful intensity and swarm and everything else.
07:41He gets asked about David Culley-level decisions that he's making,
07:44and he just sloughs it off.
07:46You'll joyfully call a timeout.
07:48Well, that's – and I'm going to get to that.
07:50I'm going to get to that.
07:50But you brought up the turnover margin.
07:52I went back and looked because it was 2024 when this started happening.
07:56When the Texans are doing enough things to put themselves in position to win games
08:00they should win, hey, if you do this, you win 95% of the time, this or that,
08:04whatever it may be.
08:06This is damning for D'Amico Ryans.
08:08Go back to week seven of 2024, the Green Bay game.
08:11They have been plus three in the turnover margin nine times since that game.
08:16You're supposed to win 91% of the time when you're plus three in turnovers.
08:19I think that's what you just said.
08:21History tells us that.
08:22They're five and four in those games.
08:23Right.
08:24They're five and four in games that they're plus three in turnovers.
08:27That's coaching.
08:28Well, and I'll tell you another thing, though, too.
08:29And this is where – look, the defense in the last couple weeks
08:32hasn't nearly been the biggest problem except that the stated goal all offseason
08:37long was not allowing chunk plays, explosive plays.
08:41That last drive – and this goes back to last year, too.
08:44The defense is awesome until these last key critical moments where, hey,
08:48CJ led you on a go-ahead drive for a touchdown there in the fourth quarter.
08:53You've got the lead.
08:55First, Kaimi Fairbairn, who doesn't have a leg to kick a 60-plus yarder,
09:00we know that, he kicks it past the landing zone.
09:03So the Colts get the ball to 35, and then Laquan freaking Treadwell,
09:07the same guy that had a huge play in the fourth quarter last week,
09:10Laquan Treadwell gets a 20-yarder down the middle of the field.
09:14They were – look, Sean, for not allowing chunk plays being the goal,
09:18I don't even – I don't have the heart right now to go through
09:21and count up all of them.
09:22I'll just go through the long reception of Josh Downs, 24 yards,
09:26Keenan Allen, 26 yards, Tyler Warren had a 15-yarder,
09:29Laquan Treadwell had a 20-yarder, Moe Alley-Cox had – Moe Alley-Cox.
09:34Why is Moe Alley-Cox always showing up in these games?
09:37These Colts games, I've got to see at least one Moe Alley-Cox.
09:39He's been there – it feels like he's been there longer than Dallas Clark.
09:4216-yarder for Moe Alley-Cox.
09:44That's five right there.
09:45I mean, those are just – those are just the highest plays.
09:49For each of them.
09:49Those are just the long receptions for each of those guys.
09:50And Josh Downs had more than one.
09:52I know that for a fact, yeah.
09:54No, so the defense isn't getting off the hook either because we all know –
09:57and this is the problem, I think that D'Amico continues to call the game offensively
10:03when he's got the – when he's making that decision in the first quarter
10:07of whether to kick a field goal or run the ball.
10:09Yep.
10:09He and Nick Kaley are deciding we're going to go for it, which cool, all right,
10:14modern analytics and whatnot.
10:16I get it.
10:17Yeah.
10:17But you think that your offensive line is something that they are not.
10:21And you run a very, very similar play to what you ran last week against a defensive line
10:28that you're not better than.
10:29Right.
10:30I don't know if they're a good defensive line.
10:32They've got a couple of good players, but you're not better than them.
10:35No.
10:35And you get stuffed.
10:36Nope.
10:37You get just absolutely stuffed.
10:38And the center almost got beat by the defensive tackle again on that one.
10:43That was just like last week.
10:45He just barely didn't.
10:47So there's that.
10:48And then, yeah, and then the defense – look, this goes back to last year.
10:51As good as the defense was, the Texans lost games in the final drives of fourth quarters last year
10:57because the Texans' defense couldn't get it together.
10:59Yeah.
11:00And that's exactly what happened yesterday, too.
11:02Yep.
11:02Absolutely.
11:03Absolutely.
11:03So there's a lot to dig into.
11:05I think if we're signing blame, the pecking order starts with the head coach in this loss.
11:10And I want to go back to the timeout.
11:11Now, let's dig into that for a second here.
11:13And I want to dig into D'Amico's – not inability.
11:17He's perfectly able to address this if he chose to.
11:20But his lack of desire to take accountability for what was a completely, completely egregious,
11:28egregious, unconscionable piece of malpractice in clock management.
11:32With the Colts driving for what would have been a go-ahead field goal with a little over a minute
11:39to go,
11:40Jonathan Taylor runs the ball on first and 10.
11:42Right after that Laquan Treadwell catch you're talking about, Seth.
11:45Laquan Treadwell catches a 20-yard pass to put the Colts at the 45-yard line of the Texans.
11:51So now you're – so now you're – the Colts are first and 10 at your 45-yard line.
12:00So they're a few yards away from being – hell, they're probably at Spencer Schrader's range already at the 45
12:05-yard line.
12:06But any more yards they get, they're kicking a field goal and they've got a chance to win this thing.
12:10So it's about a minute and change to go.
12:13Clock's running.
12:13They run a play on first and 10 down to the Texans' 40-yard line.
12:17So now it's second and five at the 40.
12:19There's a minute five left.
12:20You've got all three timeouts.
12:21They're in field goal range.
12:23So if you're going to – if you've got to operate with the idea that they're going to kick –
12:27they're going to make a field goal attempt at some point now.
12:29So you've got to start using your timeouts.
12:31D'Amico chooses to just let the clock burn down.
12:33And I'm watching this and I'm going, okay, that's a choice, I guess.
12:36I guess you're just going to hope that he misses the field goal at the end of the game.
12:39This doesn't seem like the right thing to do, but whatever.
12:42And D'Amico Ryans ends up calling a timeout with two seconds left on the play clock.
12:48Right, right.
12:49He lets 36 seconds go off the clock and then calls a timeout.
12:54So I'm watching this.
12:55I'm going, okay, there's no way he's doing this to stop the clock,
12:58to leave them more time to kick a field goal
13:00because no sane person or good game manager lets all that time drift off the clock.
13:05He must have seen something that he doesn't like and he's calling timeout.
13:09Because Daniel Jones was doing some gesticulating there.
13:11He must have seen something and wanted to call timeout just to get the defense organized.
13:15And then, no, he started using the timeouts to keep time on the clock after that.
13:19The next two timeouts he burns like you would if you were trying to save time.
13:22He let 36 seconds go off the clock.
13:25So he walks into the press conference afterwards and we played the opening statement.
13:30Okay, that opening statement was actually a response to Jonathan Alexander asking about his decision
13:38not to call a timeout.
13:40So D'Amico Ryans gets asked a direct question.
13:43He walks into the podium.
13:44He looks at the media.
13:45With that look on your face, you go, okay, anybody got any questions?
13:48Jonathan Alexander's first question was,
13:50why did you not call a timeout with a minute and change on the clock?
13:52Why did you let it burn all the way down?
13:54This was his answer.
13:55Yeah, for us, it's 0-3 start.
13:58As a team, wherever we are, it all starts with me.
14:01So right now, it's not good enough from our perspective,
14:04but I like the way our week went.
14:07Our process went well this week.
14:09Our guys connected.
14:10Our guys brought the joyful intensity that I was asking them to bring throughout the week
14:15and also today on game day.
14:17We came up short today and I got to get back to the drawing board
14:20and I got to do a better job.
14:21Okay, so got to get back to the drawing board, joyful intensity, all those things.
14:26Nobody cares about it.
14:27Why did you not use the timeout?
14:29And I credit Jonathan Alexander because he was not going to let D'Amico off the hook.
14:32He asked the question, why did you not use the timeout?
14:35Yeah, I was just, man, in that situation, I look at all those and see, you know,
14:39what happened, where I can be better.
14:43Okay.
14:44I just.
14:45Okay.
14:47You know, the part about this that just, because now,
14:50now that there are, as they've snuck in New England guy after New England guy after New
14:55England guy, there's a, it's chock full of Patriots dudes on the, on the offensive side
15:00of the ball.
15:01It just goes back to when Bill Belichick let the clock run in the Super Bowl against the
15:05Seahawks and it wasn't the by the book thing, but Belichick saw something and it ended up
15:11yielding that interception.
15:13Um, I like, I, it feels like they're trying to galaxy brain their way through something.
15:18And I don't know what the analytics people and D'Amico's ear are, ear are saying, or if
15:23you're just, you're planning on there being some, you're going to make some incredible
15:26play by that defense that has not been playing incredibly.
15:30I just.
15:30It's a one man wrecking show.
15:32It's Will Anderson.
15:33I don't.
15:34Yeah.
15:34I don't, I don't understand the justification for it.
15:37It would have been nice to, to hear something about it, but it just, you end up using that
15:42timeout anyway and there's not, I searched afterwards.
15:46I get, you know, I don't trust my own brain in situations like this and I couldn't find
15:50any justification for it.
15:52I just, it doesn't make any sense.
15:54Yep.
15:55It just looks like a team that's out of sorts and doesn't know what the hell they're doing
15:59in these critical moments.
16:00And they talk so much about situational football.
16:03That was a situation that right there is a situation.
16:06Yep.
16:07And they, and they botched it to an extreme degree.
16:10Yep.
