A horrific case of prolonged abuse and neglect has come to light in Mahoba district of Uttar Pradesh, where a 70-year-old retired railway clerk died under suspicious circumstances, while his mentally challenged daughter was found in a severely emaciated condition after allegedly being confined for five years by their caretakers.

The deceased has been identified as Omprakash Singh Rathore, a retired railway employee. His 27-year-old daughter, Rashmi, who is mentally challenged, was rescued in a critical condition. The incident surfaced on December 29, 2025, after relatives were informed about Omprakash’s death and rushed to the house.

According to family members, Omprakash shifted to a separate house with Rashmi after his wife’s death in 2016. Around the same time, Ram Prakash Kushwaha and his wife Ramdevi were hired as caretakers. Over the years, the couple allegedly took control of the house, confining Omprakash and Rashmi to ground-floor rooms while occupying the upper floors themselves.

Relatives alleged that the caretakers denied the father and daughter proper food, medical treatment, and access to visitors. They reportedly turned away family members using various excuses. The motive behind the abuse is suspected to be the illegal control of the victim’s property and assets.

When relatives reached the house following Omprakash’s death, they found his body extremely weak and emaciated. Rashmi was discovered naked in a dark room, starved to a skeletal condition and barely able to move. Family members said her physical condition made her appear decades older than her actual age.

Omprakash was taken to hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. The post-mortem report indicated chronic lung disease, though the family alleges prolonged neglect contributed to his death.

Rashmi has since been taken into the care of relatives and is undergoing recovery. Police have launched an investigation into the matter. As of the latest update, no arrests have been reported. The family has demanded strict action against the accused caretakers.
