Heavyweights Andrew Golota and Orlin Norris face off to see who moves up the rankings for a future fight with Mike Tyson on Showtime Boxing
Transcript
00:00:00A star is born and his name is Wanless Conn.
00:00:04It is one down, one to go.
00:00:06Up next here in Las Vegas, our featured attraction, a matchup of heavyweights,
00:00:10Andrew Gallardo versus Orla Norris.
00:00:12Like David Tua last week, a lot out to make a statement tonight,
00:00:16not only looking to show that he deserves to be considered for title contention,
00:00:19but that he can fight fair.
00:00:21Meanwhile, Norris, a career-high 230 pounds,
00:00:24looking to bounce back from that controversial episode with Mike Tyson about eight months ago.
00:00:30Gallardo versus Norris next.
00:00:34All right, as we hit the halfway point of our telecast,
00:00:37we turn our attention right now to the man on my right, the fight doctor, Ferdy Pacheco.
00:00:43Ferdy, we know you'd like to make a special announcement.
00:00:45The floor is yours.
00:00:46Thank you, Steve.
00:00:47Well, Steve, there's an old song that Jimmy Durante used to sing.
00:00:51You ever had the feeling that you wanted to go, but you had to stay?
00:00:54You had to stay, but you wanted to go?
00:00:55Well, that's kind of how I'm feeling right now.
00:00:57I've decided it's time to move over.
00:01:00And let me have my time by my side,
00:01:04and let me turn my job over to the expert analyst at ringside.
00:01:09After 25 years of broadcasting and 40 years in boxing,
00:01:12I've decided to put down the microphone and step aside.
00:01:15I say aside because I've accepted Showtime's request
00:01:18to remain a part of the Showtime boxing team.
00:01:21Only now, after calling flights on virtually every continent in the world,
00:01:24I'm going to hang up my traveling shoes,
00:01:26except to use some of those frequent flyer miles to enjoy myself with my wife.
00:01:31I will now have the luxury of doing opinion pieces,
00:01:34historical stories, and represent Showtime boxing on their website
00:01:38and wherever Showtime needs me.
00:01:39I leave feeling that the excellent broadcasting team of Steve Albert and Bobby Chez
00:01:44are at the peak of their game.
00:01:46As a member of the original Showtime team,
00:01:49I will still continue to be part of the family which started 14 years ago.
00:01:54And I'm going to depart for a moment here from my little script
00:01:56because I would like to express what that was.
00:01:59Jay Larkin came completely from out of boxing and got a team together.
00:02:04How he did it, I don't know.
00:02:06David Dinkins, the producer, was the son of a mayor.
00:02:09Bob Dunphy, the director, was the son of Dan Dunphy.
00:02:14And, of course, Albert, Steve Albert, was the brother of Marvin.
00:02:18And let me say right here, I owe a lot to the Albert brothers,
00:02:21and I want to make it quick.
00:02:22The Albert brothers both went end-to-end with me.
00:02:26I taught Marvin about boxing.
00:02:28He taught me everything about broadcasting.
00:02:30I wouldn't be a broadcaster if it wasn't for Marvin Albert.
00:02:32But then Steve came along, and Steve joined in,
00:02:35and I think he's the best blow-by-blow man now in action.
00:02:41There's one thing I'd like to say.
00:02:42Everybody says, how do you compare them?
00:02:44There's two things.
00:02:44One, Steve's a lot funnier.
00:02:46And two, Steve's taller.
00:02:48To get back to my script, my life is getting more and more complicated
00:02:52by up-and-coming projects that demand my attention.
00:02:55In the fall, Showtime will present my special,
00:02:57The Twelve Greatest Rounds of the Twentieth Century.
00:03:00And at the same time, Sports Illustrated will release my book of the same title.
00:03:05Another book, Pacheco's Art of the Cubans in Exile,
00:03:08a bilingual edition of 30 stories and 30 oil paintings,
00:03:12is being released before Christmas.
00:03:14As my art meets with more and more acceptance,
00:03:17my time to paint occupies all my daylight hours,
00:03:20and I devote a lot of time to the historical restoration of Ybor City.
00:03:24I especially want to thank all of my fans all over the years
00:03:28that have made the Fight Doctor a big part of their boxing experience.
00:03:32But most of all, I would like to thank thousands of fighters,
00:03:35thousands who have and continue to enrich my life.
00:03:40So, with a kind invitation of Showtime,
00:03:43I will still be with the family I have come to love,
00:03:46and helping in whatever way I can
00:03:47to make Showtime boxing shows better and better.
00:03:50So, what I'm saying, America, is not goodbye,
00:03:53but instead, see you around.
00:03:55On ferdiepacheco.com, as they say in boxing,
00:03:58keep your guard up, keep punching,
00:04:00and protect yourself at all times.
00:04:03I want to thank you very much for the kind words,
00:04:05and you said them just as I wrote them for you.
00:04:08It's been a great run.
00:04:09We wish you only the very best.
00:04:11Thank you very much, Ferdie.
00:04:12We look forward to seeing the Fight Doctor
00:04:14in his new role here on Showtime Championship Boxing.
00:04:16The heavyweights are front and center again next Saturday night
00:04:19as former undisputed heavyweight champion Mike Tyson
00:04:22takes on Lou Savarese in Glasgow Scotland.
00:04:28This June, the biggest names in heavyweight boxing
00:04:31are taking Showtime by storm.
00:04:33Mike Tyson, he's still the most ferocious man to get in the ring.
00:04:37Mike Tyson, he won't quit until he's champion again.
00:04:40But first, he must get by the big right hand of Lou Savarese.
00:04:4339 wins, 32 knockouts, and one big dream.
00:04:48Mike Tyson, name any other heavyweight you'd rather see fight.
00:04:52Tyson versus Savarese, Saturday at 9, only on Showtime.
00:05:00Well, that's what's ahead of the near future here on Showtime.
00:05:03But now, back to tonight's agenda
00:05:05as we come to you from the luxurious Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino
00:05:09in Las Vegas, Nevada.
00:05:11We settle in for our main event of the evening
00:05:14as, once again, the heavyweights grab the spot.
00:05:17Up next, Gallardo versus Norris.
00:05:20Few fighters in the history of boxing
00:05:22have had a more self-destructive career
00:05:23than the enigmatic foul-prone Andrew Gallardo.
00:05:26Tonight, the job of resurrecting that mystifying career
00:05:29continues.
00:05:30Back again with my partner to my left, Bobby Chez.
00:05:37Bobby, how good could Andrew Gallardo be if he plays by the rules?
00:05:41You know, Steve, if he plays by the rules,
00:05:42he could have, maybe even should have,
00:05:44had a world championship already.
00:05:45We saw him with Riddick Bowe not once but twice.
00:05:48Dominating him not once but twice.
00:05:50And getting disqualified not once but twice.
00:05:53Then the quit with Michael Grant after he was so far ahead,
00:05:55all he had to do was stand up.
00:05:56A man who'd gotten off the floor in the fight with Bowe
00:05:59to go on to dominate but be disqualified.
00:06:01Sometimes certain people are their own worst enemy.
00:06:04Andrew Gallardo has to figure out what it is and fix it
00:06:07because if he can get focused and stay focused
00:06:09in those heated situations, I'll tell you what,
00:06:11he's a dangerous heavyweight for anyone to want to face.
00:06:13Six foot four, almost 240 pounds of good skill,
00:06:17good speed, good power, good conditioning,
00:06:19an overall good athlete and a dangerous man.
00:06:21Which leads us to your keys to victory for both fighters tonight.
00:06:25Fair enough.
00:06:26For Andrew Gallardo, what he has to do is use a good jab
00:06:28to set up his combinations because he has one.
00:06:30And that good right hand, which he sets up very well.
00:06:33Also, head and body in combination
00:06:35when he's not south of the border.
00:06:37That's key.
00:06:40Gallardo here on the right facing Riddick Bowe.
00:06:42Throws the jab, setting up the big right hand.
00:06:45Buckles Bowe and gets him in serious trouble.
00:06:47Follows up, as he almost always does.
00:06:49He's got the killer instinct.
00:06:51He's all over Bowe.
00:06:52Now watch.
00:06:53Bowe exposes the body.
00:06:54Gallardo doesn't forget the body.
00:06:55He goes through it with a left and a right,
00:06:57keeping them north of the border,
00:07:00buckling Bowe in half, and eventually dropping Bowe.
00:07:03This is what he needs to do.
00:07:04Stay focused and get it done.
00:07:05Orlin Norris has to close the gap and crowd Gallardo,
00:07:13not give him room to work.
00:07:14And when he gets to the side, work that body.
00:07:16Also, make Gallardo miss and then make him pay.
00:07:18He can't let him off the hook at all.
00:07:22Here against Nate Miller, again, a taller guy.
00:07:24He can't leave this kind of distance.
00:07:26Gallardo's even taller with better range.
00:07:28Orlin throws the jab and a right hand that misses,
00:07:30and then eventually follows with a hook.
00:07:31But Miller goes outside again.
00:07:34So Orlin has to find him.
00:07:35Can't leave this gap.
00:07:36Once again, even if he doesn't work hard,
00:07:38stay close, crowd him.
00:07:40What he does, Miller can't work.
00:07:42Stuffs the jab, stays inside, works the body.
00:07:45Not real effective, but Miller can do nothing.
00:07:47Neither will Gallardo.
00:07:49And he lost the WBA Cruiserweight title of that fight.
00:07:52The former champ being urged on by his folks behind him.
00:07:5915 to 1, underdog.
00:08:03First action since the no contest with Tyson in October.
00:08:07He's fought a little more than six minutes in almost a full year.
00:08:11Took three months off to heal that bad right knee.
00:08:15Turned pro back in 86 with wins over names like Ronaldo, Snipes,
00:08:18Jesse Ferguson, Greg Page, Oliver McCall, Tony Tucker.
00:08:22Highly regarded Cruiser in the late 80s, early to mid 90s.
00:08:26You saw brother Terry Norris, former super well-to-weight champion in the entourage.
00:08:31But after four successful defenses of that title,
00:08:34was upset by Miller.
00:08:35KO by eight.
00:08:36Went up to heavyweight.
00:08:37Couldn't make the weight, plus the money served as motivation.
00:08:407-1 with one-note contest since losing the belt.
00:08:43That lone defeat to 6-8, Henry Akinwande.
00:08:46Tonight he fights a 6-4 man.
00:08:48Bernie, can Norris fight his fight and get inside and frustrate Galata?
00:08:55Take Galata out of his game.
00:08:57Make him angry.
00:08:58He's going to have to make him angry.
00:08:59He's not going to be able to outbox him.
00:09:01He's not going to be able to get in without suffering terrific consequences.
00:09:05I think his whole thing is to depend on the undependability of Galata.
00:09:08But that's about the only thing he's got going for him.
00:09:10Rough him up, get him mad, make him do something stupid,
00:09:13which he certainly does on many occasions.
00:09:15But as far as boxing-wise, man-to-man,
00:09:18I don't think he's got any business in there with Galata.
00:09:20And you wonder if the extra weight is going to affect him.
00:09:23He's a career-high 230 pounds.
00:09:25It could affect his mobility.
00:09:28And this is the man he's going to have to face.
00:09:31Ready for a big entrance, too, isn't he?
00:09:36Andrew Galata, one of the true enigma's in the fight game.
00:09:40Rough, tough, strong boxer who can bang.
00:09:43And while there are times when he seems to have as much ability as anybody in the division,
00:09:47he's been temperamentally unreliable.
00:09:49His erratic behavior has made him his own worst enemy.
00:09:54The two foul fests with Bo.
00:09:58A chance for redemption.
00:09:59He was KO'd by Lennox Lewis, 95 seconds in.
00:10:03Then after six straight wins came the inexplicable loss to Michael Grant
00:10:07when leading on all three cards.
00:10:09And after having Grant down twice in the first,
00:10:11he just stopped fighting after being floored in the tent.
00:10:14Off the easy third-round TKO over a totally overmatched Marcus Brody in China.
00:10:20Bobby, he's never really fully explained his fouls.
00:10:24What happened?
00:10:25What's your take on all that stuff?
00:10:26You know, Steve, I've asked Galata at least four or five times in several occasions
00:10:30in many different ways.
00:10:31I've never got a clear, concise, or clean answer from him.
00:10:35He either changes the subject or he starts joking about taking showers.
00:10:38Right.
00:10:38I really think that maybe that's going to be one of boxing's unsolved mysteries for life.
00:10:42But something goes wrong in his head.
00:10:44I'm not a psychiatrist or a psychologist,
00:10:46but I believe that a switch flicks when the pressure becomes too much for him
00:10:49and he reacts badly just trying to inflict pain.
00:10:52He's going to have to address it.
00:10:53He's going to have to find that demon that he can't control.
00:10:55Tim Smith said something interesting in our fighter meeting yesterday.
00:11:00Maybe he's afraid of success.
00:11:02I heard that rumor, but I don't think so.
00:11:04Why would you get off the floor against a guy like Riddick Bowe
00:11:06when you've got to clean out and get up and show the courage,
00:11:09show the guy to suck it up and do the job only to get disqualified again?
00:11:12Well, some of the backers, the supporters,
00:11:14waving the flag of Poland for Andrew Gulotta.
00:11:18Tandle of the tape coming up.
00:11:20Gulotta the big edge throughout, as you'll see.
00:11:22He's two years younger at 6'4", a 5-inch height advantage,
00:11:26a whopping 8 inches in reach.
00:11:28At yesterday's weigh-in, Gulotta 238 down 8 pounds from his previous fight.
00:11:32And as we mentioned, Norris a career-high 230.
00:11:35Fight time weights, Gulotta 238 the same.
00:11:37Norris actually went down a pound to 229.
00:11:39Key rules for this non-title affair.
00:11:41No standing eight count.
00:11:43No three-knockdown rule.
00:11:44A fighter cannot be saved by the bell in any round.
00:11:47If an accidental headbutt occurs before the end of the fourth,
00:11:49it's a no contest.
00:11:51After the end of the fourth, we go to the cards.
00:11:54So here at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas,
00:11:57we're getting ready for our main event.

00:14:15wearing white trunks with red trim,
00:14:17originally from Warsaw, Poland,

00:14:56Come on out!
00:15:01All right, gentlemen,
00:15:02this will be a clean fight.
00:15:04Protect yourself at all times,
00:15:05repay my commands at all times.
00:15:06Got any questions?
00:15:07Let's keep those punches up.
00:15:08I want it clean.
00:15:09Touch gloves, let's go.
00:15:12Mitch Halpern,
00:15:12very emphatic about,
00:15:14this will be a clean fight.
00:15:18Galata, rough, tough, strong,
00:15:20stand-up boxer,
00:15:21in the traditional Eastern European mold,
00:15:23very deliberate, yet busy,
00:15:25like a tank coming forward,
00:15:26good overall skills,
00:15:27good chin,
00:15:28good question,
00:15:29can he keep his composure?
00:15:30Norris short for heavyweight,
00:15:32used to fighting taller opponents,
00:15:33a well-schooled craftsman,
00:15:35who relies on smarts,
00:15:37speed,
00:15:37and boxing ability.
00:15:39He usually is not a runner,
00:15:41in fact,
00:15:41he likes to apply pressure,
00:15:43and is willing to mix it up.
00:15:45Here we go again,
00:15:46with Andrew Galata,
00:15:48disqualification prone,
00:15:50looking to keep his cool.
00:15:52Brings a nasty reputation
00:15:53into the fight.
00:15:55He's lost his temper,
00:15:56he's unraveled more than once,
00:15:57which has probably kept him
00:15:58from the top of the division.
00:16:00Orlin Norris is going to look
00:16:01to gauge Galata's speed,
00:16:02and also find the place
00:16:04where he sees the hole,
00:16:05and take his shots.
00:16:06He's going to step back,
00:16:07move back,
00:16:08but then he's going to bend
00:16:08and leap in,
00:16:09doubling his power,
00:16:10if he can catch Galata.
00:16:12Now watch yours.
00:16:12You're struck with immediately,
00:16:14there's a difference in size.
00:16:15Look at the size of Galata.
00:16:16Why that guy's not
00:16:17the heavyweight champion
00:16:18of the world,
00:16:18I'll never know.
00:16:19Well, I do know.
00:16:20He's nuts.
00:16:23Galata's own trainer,
00:16:25Al Cerno,
00:16:25calls this Galata's last to ride.
00:16:28He says,
00:16:28if I can't help him,
00:16:29no one can.
00:16:30If this doesn't work,
00:16:31he can get a job
00:16:32washing cars pretty well.
00:16:34You know why Al's
00:16:34just as crazy as he is?
00:16:36He's a funny guy.
00:16:37Norris looks like he's
00:16:42standing under an overhang
00:16:44waiting for an avalanche
00:16:45to fall on him.
00:16:46Look at him.
00:16:46He looks at how little he is,
00:16:48and this big guy's waiting
00:16:49to just unload.
00:16:50And there's only an eight-pound
00:16:51difference in girth.
00:16:53And that's really hard.
00:16:54That's the weight.
00:16:55The weight's very close.
00:16:56That's really hard
00:16:57to understand, Bobby.
00:16:58I mean, God,
00:16:59that means he's fat.
00:17:00That means Norris is fat.
00:17:02Well, he's thick.
00:17:03I'm not sure.
00:17:03He looks like he could
00:17:04be a little overweight,
00:17:05but you never know.
00:17:06He might have put the weight
00:17:06on purpose just to deal
00:17:08with the strength
00:17:08of this big guy.
00:17:10A lot of bouncing,
00:17:12a few jabs off the noggin
00:17:13of Norris.
00:17:16Looking to follow it up
00:17:17with the right hand.
00:17:18Norris sends Galata
00:17:19back momentarily.
00:17:21Gets a rise out of the crowd.
00:17:23The crowd really into it.
00:17:25Norris naturally
00:17:26a better left hooker
00:17:27than he is
00:17:27an overhand right throw.
00:17:29But he said he sees
00:17:29the overhand right.
00:17:30He said it can be there
00:17:31all day.
00:17:31There's the jab
00:17:33by Galata.
00:17:34He better start
00:17:35putting a lot more jabs.
00:17:36He can't find them
00:17:36as it is right now.
00:17:37He's just following
00:17:38them around.
00:17:40And that's no good.
00:17:41He's got to find them
00:17:41with a jab,
00:17:42and he's got to start
00:17:42working a little bit.
00:17:47Norris trying to get in
00:17:48with a left hook
00:17:49followed by a right.
00:17:50It was locked by Galata.
00:17:57The entire Norris family,
00:17:59Terry Norris,
00:17:59Orland Norris,
00:18:00and Orland Sr.
00:18:01or fight people.
00:18:02They know this game.
00:18:03They know what to do.
00:18:04He's going to be smart
00:18:05about this world.
00:18:06He's going to think this
00:18:07through and try and get
00:18:08Galata frustrated
00:18:09and land when he can
00:18:10like that.
00:18:11In and out.
00:18:11In and out and be smart.
00:18:14He landed low.
00:18:15The first of the low
00:18:16punches did Norris.
00:18:18Let's see if that
00:18:18upsets Galata a little bit.
00:18:20Goal-Tso!
00:18:20Goal-Tso!
00:18:23Goal-Tso!
00:18:23Goal-Tso!
00:18:24Goal-Tso!
00:18:25Goal-Tso!
00:18:25Right-left combination
00:18:26to the head by Norris
00:18:27here at the end
00:18:28of round one.
00:18:30Speed factor there.
00:18:31In and out real quick.
00:18:32Galata didn't have time
00:18:33to react.
00:18:34Norris was gone.
00:18:34Goal-Tso!
00:18:34Goal-Tso!
00:18:35Goal-Tso!
00:18:35Goal-Tso!
00:18:36Goal-Tso!
00:18:36the only good punch of the entire round but he's not boxing he's outwitted
00:18:51with the right hand let it go let it go please let's relax relax you don't do it
00:18:59you got to work with your jab you got to work with your jab and throw that right hand fast
00:19:04with a hook you understand don't hold back with your points you're holding back with your right hand
00:19:15norris the quicker of the two jumps in with a left and a right left not clean right hand
00:19:19a little better but galata can't react in the backward position like that he can't just
00:19:24lean backward he's got a step two norris was hands down that right hand landed pretty clean
00:19:29orland won the first round by walking galata around taking advantage of the speed difference
00:19:34he out thought him and he out fought him although there wasn't much fighting to speak
00:19:40galata needs to step behind the jab force norris back
00:19:45norris has fought and beaten large heavyweights before
00:19:49ronaldo snipes jesse ferguson greg page among others but at 5 11 nearly every heavyweight is
00:19:54bigger than norris good left right combination to the to the head by norris again to open up round two
00:20:00so far norris has beaten galata to the punch
00:20:10right now galata needs to step in behind the jab don't just flick it out like that step in
00:20:16give him a little backhand too the caution from mitch halpern one of the best
00:20:21that's tough off the glove of galata
00:20:27when norris leaps in like that what galata really should do is bend his knees and fire the right
00:20:31hand because if he catches norris in the air with his feet off the ground he has to go down
00:20:35norris has been down three times in his career four if you can't be shot after the bell by tyson
00:20:48he's been down twice against kurt cooper in 90 once versus nate miller in 95 when he lost to
00:20:53cruiserweight bill galata's been down two times most recently versus michael grant two fights ago
00:21:00at least he's working hard now the jabs are coming in even though they aren't hard
00:21:06now galata beginning to open up some more
00:21:11a lot of those punches though being blocked by norris who's known for his good defense
00:21:17he knows how to slip punches and they're not hard punches
00:21:21he has not thrown one thing with evil intention yet
00:21:25overhand right there by norris just missed that's what he wants to do he wants to grab
00:21:30galata galata can't work well in here
00:21:34and he's doing just that orle norris getting inside on galata tying him up
00:21:41and looking to get him mad
00:21:44that comes galata and now loris counters to the right but galata peppering the head of norris
00:21:50galata landed a few more clean shots on inside than i thought he could norris gave him too much room
00:21:57he boxed his ears that time he got it from both sides
00:22:02the pesky oil and norris continues to move forward
00:22:09trying to get into the belly with that left jab
00:22:11right hand's coming galata doesn't appear as if he's thrown anything with really nasty intentions yet
00:22:19so i'm curious to see what happens how long he wants to wait till he opens up like that there's a good
00:22:24straight right by galata
00:22:25he's just trying to put that right
00:22:40that's thrown with intention
00:22:46two rounds of the books
00:22:47two rounds of the books
00:22:53give breath
00:23:07give breath give breath give breath
00:23:09on the inside when you got him on the inside you don't always have to go wide
00:23:12okay wait a minute wait a minute
00:23:18brother terry norris younger by 18 months former three-time 154 pound champion
00:23:25not long ago considered by many the best pound for pound
00:23:28fighter in the world and the glasses the wife of orland
00:23:31former great ornelia esposa edwards i was just going to say in that corner esposa edwards
00:23:45and that was a hard fighter boy was he tough former 130 pound champion here we go round three
00:23:54seems to be a little bit of different purpose in galata's eyes right now
00:23:56we translate that into uh more offense we'll see
00:24:01keep it up come on go keep it up
00:24:03keep it up oh those were hard punches
00:24:06i think there's a different look in his eye there's more more of an intention now he's warmed up
00:24:10it's time to get time to get in business
00:24:18i must say norris is standing right in front of him and he chooses to fire off the shotgun right
00:24:24whoa there it is right on cue by andrew galata nice right hand no ill effects from norris still though
00:24:31it wasn't fully turned in nasty right hand good clean but not a big power shot but no left hook after
00:24:40the right hand is galata's big weapon plus the jab but oil and norris
00:24:46smothering most of those galata punches up till now
00:24:50both camps thought this had the real makeups makings of a distance fight too so both fighters are
00:24:55probably setting in and not wasting too much energy straight right hands by norris scoring very effective
00:25:02to the head of galata three good shots right to the head of galata they didn't make an attempt to block it
00:25:08a series of right hands by norris they all landed
00:25:16those punches being blocked effectively by norris
00:25:23galata beginning to get frustrated i believe and you know what that might mean
00:25:27but so far he's been fair and square
00:25:38and don't forget usually when he fouls galata it's when he's ahead but sometimes he doesn't realize
00:25:46when he's running he's ahead as in the michael grab fight he thought he was behind in that fight as
00:25:52his trainer al surdo told us yesterday which is unbelievable galata's not really working either
00:25:59he's not really keeping much of a pace he's not forcing early to move bob weave and waste energy
00:26:05doesn't really seem to be overly interested in this the right was blocked by galata the left got through
00:26:11the defense of norris again norris getting inside galata landing with uppercuts a couple nice uppercuts
00:26:20to the midsection and ripped it around over the top
00:26:26i'll tell you one thing norris came to fight tonight he's taking some shots and he's come right back
00:26:32but i don't think he can weather it continues continues pounding like this i don't think so
00:26:40it's the big heavyweight hit
00:26:50andrew galata's wife at ringside in attendance his wife mariolla who's a lawyer
00:26:56what a great concern there norris utilizing his speed lands some punches on the inside and his speed
00:27:10has just got a lot of confused there's the right hand another right hand and then a third right hand
00:27:15which wasn't as clean and yet a fourth not all of them real clean not all of them real strong but he's
00:27:20really confusing galata with the speed another angle at the same stuff right hand right hand
00:27:27just quick not real hard but a real nuisance and again left right and he moves out
00:27:34effective in that they landed not real big okay the power department same thing be the boss in there
00:27:39keep backing him up keep backing him up keep backing him up that's what he's got to do he's got to work
00:27:51problem is i'm not sure i've seen galata back about that much
00:27:55a lot of 35 and four with 29 knockouts rated number 10 by the wbc norris 50 and five with that
00:28:08memorable no contest one no decision
00:28:10i'm talking with al cerdo he said that andrew galata fights considerably better going forward not
00:28:23comfortable backing up yeah he's doing a lot of going uh in the wrong direction today
00:28:29he feels galata doesn't even know his own talent and he lacks confidence
00:28:32there's the jab by galata let's see if he follows it up at some point with the right
00:28:40which is his real heavy weapon nice combination in the body there by north but nothing really landing
00:28:46quick more of a shoe shine for visual effects more than effectiveness
00:28:50not many answers here from galata he's just taking those jabs to the stomach
00:29:05he's got to work he's standing there what's he waiting for
00:29:09norris is working norris is doing all the work he's out hustling galata every once in a while galata
00:29:15shoots a left hook
00:29:24well if this goes to decision he's going to regret wasting around around like this
00:29:30galata appears to be looking for one punch at a time or north's defense is too good for that
00:29:36but he's going to be looking for the defense
00:29:47yeah but here comes galata he landed too guys a flurry to the head now he opens up
00:29:57pouring it on but he backs up but a very effective sequence for galata that was good sharp fighting
00:30:05by galata he's got to do that in order to win this fight
00:30:14watch your head in there watch your head the heads come perilously close
00:30:25nice defense by norris deflecting the jabs of galata
00:30:34oh straight right hand to the head by galata
00:30:36not that hurt you see him side watch your head okay
00:30:39norris sagged with that shot and sagged against him that may have been galata's best punch of the fight
00:30:45that's the first one that really looked like there could have been a tiny delayed reaction
00:30:48yep it was like he's sagged into it big big punch
00:31:08good breath good breath only
00:31:09a lot of backs rolling norris up and this is when he's at his best coming forward
00:31:17nice level to the body comes up top lands some shots to both sides of norris's head
00:31:23but then just backs off and lets it go one of his more effective combinations
00:31:27yet he follows up very little here's that right hand that appeared to do some damage
00:31:33one two and you know what most of that was blocked now that we look at it in slow motion but there was
00:31:38a little buckle there maybe a delayed reaction by orland norris second's out let's go
00:31:46it appears as if galata is just waiting for one punch he's just being outworked by orland norris
00:31:54although he was at his best in that last round it's now round five scheduled for ten seems to be a little
00:32:01bit of uh an extra pop in his step right now galata a little more energetic
00:32:06it's almost as if it feels he's got this guy going down
00:32:09he felt him saying he had heard him and it looks like norris is going to go backwards
00:32:18and a little guy like norris can he fight going backwards effectively you know what he can steve but
00:32:23he can't do it consistently in other words when he goes back he has to draw god in stop bend and leap in
00:32:28and bang get in and out quick which we showed him in the first round consistently going backwards
00:32:32he can't do it norris all over galata as he comes forward he's scoring
00:32:41may not be hurting galata with those punches but he's getting the judge's attention look out
00:32:45almost a foul by galata as he need norris but norris able to maintain his balance i'm not sure
00:32:53that was a neon purpose but more of a reaction with the ropes he kicked off the ropes and his foot
00:32:58came out funny yeah i don't think that was on purpose at all oh white red uppercut
00:33:06that punch had some steam behind it
00:33:08a lot of punches while not very frequent seem to be getting more powerful as the fight wears on
00:33:24he's looking to drop that right hand straight right he may not even throw there he goes not even throw
00:33:30left in front he's going north being so short hard to go to a short man's body he has not gotten to
00:33:38his body a lot probably a good idea overall well with his record of fouling it's the best if he doesn't
00:33:45that jab not getting anywhere as it's being blocked repeatedly by or lenares
00:34:03it would be amazing to see in these close rounds when they hear that clicker go to this 10 seconds
00:34:15that either of them try and steal the round allow the master for sugary leonard who used to do it all the time
00:34:26neither man impressive in this round although the better punches are being landed by galata
00:34:30good boy good boy andrew good boy very good
00:35:01easy looking take it easy wait a while
00:35:08give him some water very good and just keep doing the same thing don't be
00:35:13don't be afraid to throw that bomb
00:35:16or lenares here charging galata leaping in he kind of hits the ropes and the knee doesn't really
00:35:21come out on purpose he just backs up against the ropes and his leg gets kind of trapped in there
00:35:27here's a different angle maybe even a better angle he comes back in there the knee just kind of comes
00:35:31up he doesn't really try and do it he gets turned around trying to throw a right uppercut
00:35:38that same uppercut he delivers here
00:35:39but over in right and he turns a beautiful uppercut in and again you saw a slight delayed buckle
00:35:44from norris with no follow-up by galata
00:35:48round six norris at the heaviest weight of his career trying to use that weight on the inside
00:35:54against the 238 pound galata
00:35:59unofficially your scores at the half
00:36:01i've got galata at 49 46. i had the exact same score i gave all in one round
00:36:07but he'd just get out worked a little bit and galata just landing a few more shots
00:36:17the fans online have it tight norris by one
00:36:23through five
00:36:30little touch shots by norris more powerful hits by galata
00:36:34watch your head watch your head watch your head you wonder if these
00:36:38punches by galata beginning to accumulate on the head and body of doris i guarantee you they are
00:36:43i guarantee you you can't take that many punches from a big man and not start to fit it it's cumulative
00:36:48it's like the irs you can't beat them they just catch it keeps them out
00:37:05it's going to make it by norris followed up by a left hook back comes galata with a short left hook to the head of norris
00:37:13norris
00:37:20norris's punches are more frequent
00:37:24it's as if norris can't get away with anything just when he gets a couple of really nice punches in
00:37:28there back comes galata with harder and bigger punches
00:37:36galata obviously not working as hard as norris but when he scores he gets norris's attention
00:37:43well norris is winning this fight i mean this round he's just out working
00:37:48but then galata is consistently trying to land that right hand now he's starting to find the range
00:37:56beautiful combination to the head by galata
00:38:02but you wonder when you see orland norris against galata how would a mike tyson is much faster than norris
00:38:19be handled by a galata might be trouble for andrew big trouble i'd say so
00:38:26it's great right hand in the head by galata no answer from norris just pushes him back with a light jam
00:38:35his jam's not hurting galata whatsoever
00:38:47galata being very cautious
00:38:52very good very good
00:38:55aqua aqua where's the towel on him the other one
00:39:00very good baby you're doing great
00:39:04here's what happens to our north on left when he leaves this gap this wide he allows galata to use
00:39:09that jab set it up and bang right hand bang right hand as we roll the tape you see he doesn't close
00:39:15the gap he doesn't get inside at range his jab acts as a feeler bang bang two clean right hands
00:39:21absolutely no need to stay out there and let galata be effective cut that gap in half make him work
00:39:27look down below down
00:39:34look down below down
00:39:36over and over
00:39:38Round number seven scheduled for ten in this non-title heavyweight affair between Andrew
00:39:53Galata on the right, Orland Orris on the left.
00:39:58There has not been a great amount of energy expended by either fighter in any one round.
00:40:02You might think that somebody would hang it out a little bit here in a reasonably close
00:40:06fight.
00:40:07Another combination by Galata to open up round seven.
00:40:13Galata gaining in confidence as the fight wears on.
00:40:20Now he's punching for real.
00:40:24After a slow start by the Polish fighter.
00:40:29Now Galata.
00:40:30He's serious.
00:40:31Maybe that was his game plan to run down and come back with hard punches.
00:40:39Galata's consistently letting Norris beat him to the jab and out-jab him when he has that
00:40:45kind of range.
00:40:46He's going to step with it.
00:40:47He's not stepping forward.
00:40:48He's just putting the hand out, not stepping with the jab.
00:40:52Oh, a big overhand right to the head by Norris that scored nicely.
00:40:59Galata's keeping his left hand way down, you see it, on his belt line.
00:41:04Galata just seems to be doing enough, but it might not be.
00:41:09And it seems like barely enough to maybe steal some rounds.
00:41:13That's enough right there.
00:41:14Pretty combination to the head by Galata.
00:41:16He's got to do more of that though.
00:41:18Just when it looks like Norris is getting something going, this guy comes back and neutralizes him.
00:41:23See, now why does he allow Norris to just walk him back into the corner like that, crowd him
00:41:28where he can't be real effective?
00:41:29Doesn't make sense.
00:41:31Watch the hands.
00:41:36Especially when he's so much bigger than Orland Norris.
00:41:41You can't just let him walk you down.
00:41:43You've got to make him pay.
00:41:45Okay, he wants to earn that ground, make him pay for it.
00:41:47And he's making Norris pay there, and they almost came together with their legs and got tangled up.
00:41:52Norris is bad now, but so is Galata, who issues a short right to the head.
00:42:02Now it's getting to be a fight, not a boxing match.
00:42:05And if he can get Galata really bad, he may do one of his dumb things.
00:42:10Things really heating up here in the seventh row.
00:42:13Galata landed repeatedly with that right hand.
00:42:16Off the side of Norris' head.
00:42:21This is a punishing round for Norris.
00:42:23Yeah, Galata fighting like he wants to finish it.
00:42:25He's fighting like he wants to knock him out.
00:42:27Looks like Norris' right eye is beginning to close.
00:42:29There was a nice attempted right hand to the body, but I'll tell you what.
00:42:32Good countering left by Norris.
00:42:34Back comes Galata.
00:42:35Big right hand by Galata.
00:42:37His best punch of the night.
00:42:38Light up and cut.
00:42:39Another one by Galata.
00:42:40That's wearing out.
00:42:42That's wearing out.
00:42:43Oh, another hit on the brake.
00:42:44Oh, oh.
00:42:45All right, we'll get water.
00:42:59We'll give you water.
00:43:00One second, unless you have it.
00:43:02All right, just open it up.
00:43:04It's a little nicked.
00:43:06All right.
00:43:08Run okay under?
00:43:10Very good, Andrew.
00:43:12Don't worry about the cuts.
00:43:14A little nicked.
00:43:15A little nicked.
00:43:16Take a deep breath.
00:43:17Come on.
00:43:18Not big, but maybe a quarter of an inch.
00:43:22There it is.
00:43:23There it is.
00:43:24I got it.
00:43:25Put the stuff on it.
00:43:27Cut it.
00:43:28The famous stuff.
00:43:30You got the stuff, though.
00:43:31You got the stuff.
00:43:32Put the pressure on.
00:43:34Watch all the north as he comes in here on the left.
00:43:36He's trying to land over the top consistently.
00:43:38What Galata does is bend this way and rock up with an uppercut.
00:43:42Very effective for a big man to do if he can do it well.
00:43:45If you roll the tape.
00:43:47Now watch him bend.
00:43:48He'll bend and lean.
00:43:49Leans here.
00:43:50Leans.
00:43:51He keeps hitting there.
00:43:52He's going to lean.
00:43:53Leans there and fires an uppercut.
00:43:54But he doesn't land it real clean.
00:43:56And it looks like the heads did come together.
00:43:59Inducing the cut.
00:44:00So Danny Milano goes to work in the Galata corner.
00:44:03Cut over the right eye.
00:44:04So blood could blur his vision.
00:44:07Now why doesn't he go to the body?
00:44:10When Norris has got his hands wet, protecting his head.
00:44:13Open invitation to that nice little fat belly.
00:44:16I was thinking the same thing.
00:44:17But you know what?
00:44:18He's had a whole lot of trouble going to the body in some fights.
00:44:20Maybe on his mind too much.
00:44:22And now Norris is using that right eye as target practice.
00:44:25Lands with a left hook to that eye area.
00:44:28It appears that Galata had some of the answers.
00:44:43And toward the end of the last round.
00:44:45Had to get to Orland a little more with the punches.
00:44:48Be a little more clean than the shots and land.
00:44:50But he's coming out almost as if he's confused again.
00:44:58Again, thudding blows by Andrew Galata.
00:45:07And peddling blows against the arms basically by Norris.
00:45:12Norris is trying to take Galata's mind off the fact that his left hand's down.
00:45:17He's hitting his left hand.
00:45:18You watch him swing over the top with that right hand.
00:45:21He's ignored for a little while and then swing it over the top.
00:45:24Go.
00:45:26Go!
00:45:27Go!
00:45:28Let's quickly go over to Tim Spett, Tim.
00:45:29Yes, Steve.
00:45:30I just talked to Dr. Margaret Goodman.
00:45:32She examined the cut between rounds over Galata's right eye.
00:45:35She said it's a very small cut.
00:45:36It's nothing serious.
00:45:37Thank you, Steve.
00:45:38Thank you very much, Tim.
00:45:40And the head of Vegas commission came by.
00:45:42He'll have a sign and said that cut was by a punch.
00:45:45That would be their official ruling, by a punch.
00:45:48You can see the blood over the right eye of Gallada.
00:45:53Again Norris trying to exacerbate the cut.
00:45:57Good left hook right hand by Gallada.
00:45:59That was sharp. That was sharp.
00:46:01But he didn't have his weight forward,
00:46:03and we might have seen better results.
00:46:05I have to say Norris is putting up a heck of a good fight.
00:46:09I mean, he is taking some shots.
00:46:12I wonder what would have happened
00:46:14if he fought this tough against Tyson.
00:46:17Well, Gallada started to telegraph the left hand.
00:46:20Telegraphed the right hand too much.
00:46:22That left got in by Norris.
00:46:25Another left by Norris.
00:46:27These are little pity-pan lifts. They're not big punches.
00:46:30Norris has crowded him so much
00:46:32that he's compromising his own power range.
00:46:36Yeah, he has no leverage when he's in that deeply.
00:46:40And Gallada goes to work.
00:46:43Back comes Norris with a left hand.
00:46:46No, no, no, no, no, no.
00:46:47Great action at the end of Brownie.
00:46:49There you go, Andrew!
00:46:52Good boy, baby!
00:46:55Good boy!
00:46:56Very good, Andrew.
00:47:01Good boy!
00:47:02Very good, Andrew.
00:47:03Try to give me that water!
00:47:05Water!
00:47:06You want it?
00:47:07Yeah.
00:47:08Doing good, Andrew.
00:47:11Very good.
00:47:12Just keep the trunk.
00:47:15Another two rounds and it's all over.
00:47:18All right, baby!
00:47:19Deep!
00:47:20I'll tell you what, his corner's saying this is good, but he gets hit pretty clean here with an overhand right and a left hook comes up inside.
00:47:28You know, that's not necessarily good, maybe meant the rest of the round, but I didn't think it was a good round for Gallada at all. I really did.
00:47:33There's an overhead look at the same sequence.
00:47:38Norris doesn't lean right hand well, but that left hook squaring him out.
00:47:43Left hook was pretty solid, although the shots aren't as big as they could be by either fight.
00:47:48Come on.
00:47:49Get out of here.
00:47:50Let's go.
00:47:51Come on.
00:47:52Close fight continues into round nine, scheduled for ten.
00:47:54Whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:47:55You got it in?
00:47:56You got it in?
00:47:57Okay, go.
00:47:58And there's so much at stake in particular for the big guy, Andrew Gallardo.
00:48:03He came in looking to make a statement tonight to get into world title contention.
00:48:07And you know what?
00:48:08I've got it 77-75.
00:48:09This is still going to be another one of those fights.
00:48:12If it keeps on going, judges are going to have a hard time here.
00:48:15It's not open and shut by a long time.
00:48:17I mean, you know, looking at our fans at home, Norris is winning.
00:48:20So, this could be close.
00:48:22They'll go to the hands of three Las Vegas judges.
00:48:25Carroll Castellano, Wayne Ford, Patricia Jarman, Mack.
00:48:28Well, the first 50 seconds in the round, give or take, 45 seconds.
00:48:32It's been mostly Gallardo.
00:48:33Norris is trying to block us.
00:48:35But nothing real effective, nothing real definitive.
00:48:42A lot of ebb and flow.
00:48:44One minute gone by around nine.
00:48:46Now Norris winging to the body, end of the head.
00:48:47Back comes Gallardo.
00:48:48We believe Norris not working him, but then the more effective punches come in from Gallardo.
00:48:51Gallardo's backing up too much, not getting any weight into his punches.
00:48:53Those punches are quite good.
00:48:54They're quite good.
00:48:55They're quite good.
00:48:56They're quite good.
00:48:57They're quite good.
00:48:58They're quite good.
00:48:59They're quite good.
00:49:00They're quite good.
00:49:01Now Norris winging to the body, end of the head.
00:49:02Back comes Gallardo.
00:49:03We believe Norris not working him, but then the more effective punches come in from Gallardo.
00:49:08Gallardo's backing up too much, not getting any weight into his punches.
00:49:20Those punches are turning into more big slap from a big man, not leaning in with his weight.
00:49:25He should use that weight and size to be pushing back, Norris, to get him tired, to get him fatigued.
00:49:30He should be laying all over, using that weight to weaken him.
00:49:34He has not done that.
00:49:35Easy, easy, easy.
00:49:36Step up, step up.
00:49:37Easy, easy, easy.
00:49:38Step up, step up.
00:49:39Easy, easy, easy.
00:49:40Step up, step up.
00:49:41Easy, easy, easy.
00:49:42Step up, step up.
00:49:43Easy, easy, easy.
00:49:44Step up, step up.
00:49:45Norris doing a good job of blocking and slipping those punches by Gallardo.
00:49:48Let's see what he can unleash offensively here now.
00:49:53He comes in with those gloves up high.
00:49:58Goes to the body, does Norris.
00:50:03The cut holding up over the right eye of Gallardo.
00:50:16There have been no knockdowns.
00:50:21Fans chanting for Norris.
00:50:24I'll tell you what, no knockdowns.
00:50:25At this pace it doesn't look like there'll be one.
00:50:27No one seems to be throwing a really serious intention.
00:50:30A lot of quick, flashy combinations, but nothing real solid.
00:50:34And it's been foul free.
00:50:38And that's saying Gallardo.
00:50:39Watch out, you can put the mush on us.
00:50:41The jinx.
00:50:42Gallardo's trying to put as much steam as he can, but they don't seem to be hurt.
00:50:45Gallardo applying the pressure.
00:50:47He landed a really good right hand.
00:50:48It looked like she took Norris up a little bit.
00:50:50Whoa.
00:50:51Good finish for Gallardo.
00:50:53Gallardo.
00:50:54Action.
00:50:55All the way.
00:50:56Gallardo's wife, very concerned.
00:51:00And Chase Papaya.
00:51:02He says, long live for the puppies.
00:51:06Relax.
00:51:07We'll give you a water.
00:51:08Last round.
00:51:09Come on.
00:51:10Haight.
00:51:11Bolton.
00:51:13Gordon, you gotta get fuckin...
00:51:20In and out, in and out.
00:51:21Breathe it deep.
00:51:23Open assimble right here.
00:51:25Right hand's just too far over the top.
00:51:27We just gotta go.
00:51:28We just gotta go, we just gotta go.
00:51:29Avalanche, please, please, please.
00:51:30Okay.
00:51:31Well, that's right we all know.
00:51:32Everything you have happens
00:51:32And the Norris family also looking concerned.
00:51:35Concern, brother Terry Norris, Orland's wife, doubled over, could barely look.
00:51:44Hard for family members to watch her kin fight, but I'll tell you, I didn't mind fighting with my brother's former amateurs, I hate them.
00:51:51Alright, here we go, they touch gloves for the tenth and final round.
00:51:56It's been action packed and very close.
00:51:59Let's see if either of these fighters display a sense of urgency.
00:52:03Oh, look out, there was a high right knee by Gallardo, awfully close to a foul there.
00:52:08I'm not sure if that was a knee-jerk reaction.
00:52:12Yes, in stereo, folks.
00:52:15Norris came into the body and it just kind of, I think Gallardo off guard.
00:52:19Oh, a big left-right combination to the right, very effective by Norris.
00:52:24The best punch of the night for Norris.
00:52:27Water sprayed all over the place, that was a good solid hit.
00:52:30Beautifully timed.
00:52:31Remember, I have him so far back that he's got to have a knockout to win.
00:52:35Step back easy, easy.
00:52:36But, 87-84, but Gallardo at 87, that's conjectural.
00:52:42You know, the judges can see it any way they want.
00:52:45This is too close to call.
00:52:47This is a close thing.
00:52:48Time, get in that corner, get in that corner.
00:52:50Get in that corner, get in that corner.
00:52:51Get in that corner.
00:52:52Get in that corner.
00:52:53Give it to Hal.
00:52:54Go!
00:52:55Go!
00:52:56Go!
00:52:57Go!
00:52:58Go!
00:52:59It gets awfully slippery.
00:53:00We continue.
00:53:01Under two minutes remaining in the last round.
00:53:03This crowd is really into it.
00:53:05With Gallardo here, you see he's trying to find his range.
00:53:20He can't get in time.
00:53:21Oh, good one here.
00:53:22Straight right hand by Gallardo.
00:53:23Back comes Norris, but missing with an overhand right.
00:53:28Norris got the worst of that bargain.
00:53:30He got hammered three times.
00:53:31He got nothing in return.
00:53:33Gallardo finally using his feet to slide in and out,
00:53:37the way he's been doing all night.
00:53:39Oh, a big left hand.
00:53:42A twisting left, half-puck, half-uppercut
00:53:45that landed on the head of Norris.
00:53:47Gallardo's taking a lot of punishment now.
00:53:49A lot of punishment.
00:53:50Gallardo might be winning this fight here in this round.
00:53:53Another good right hand.
00:53:55Stuff in the jab.
00:53:56No response.
00:53:57No reaction from Norris.
00:53:59Oh, a right hand right by Norris.
00:54:01And a left by Norris.
00:54:02Now Norris staging a comeback.
00:54:05He's trying to land that right hand.
00:54:08He said earlier in the interviews yesterday,
00:54:10that right hand's going to be a factor.
00:54:12Under 50 seconds in the 10th and final.
00:54:16Norris giving it all he's got.
00:54:18You can't ask for it for Norris.
00:54:20He's taking the Sherlock and he's still in here.
00:54:23He's still looking for his knockout.
00:54:25I think win or lose, he redeems himself somewhat here.
00:54:29He does.
00:54:30He's taking the onus off of him.
00:54:33This is the Norris we wanted to see against Mike Tyson.
00:54:36I still want to see him.
00:54:38Against Andrew Gallardo.
00:54:44Under 20 seconds.
00:54:46Great big step back easy.
00:54:47Don't punch.
00:54:48You got to give Norris his respect no matter how this turns out.
00:54:54He's got it.
00:54:55He's back.
00:54:56And many of the fans on their feet here at the Mandalay Bay.
00:54:59That's been a good one.
00:55:00And they end with a hot exchange.
00:55:09Who won?
00:55:12In my book, Gallardo won.
00:55:14What do you got, Bobby?
00:55:16In Bobby's book?
00:55:17I have it six rounds of four for Gallardo.
00:55:18I thought he just outworked him in some of the key close rounds.
00:55:21Landed some of the better shots.
00:55:23You know, I just, Orland fought very well.
00:55:26There were a couple rounds that were razor thin.
00:55:28Tough fight to judge.
00:55:30Tough fight to call.
00:55:32Because you swing one round and it's a two point swing.
00:55:35Swing two rounds, it's four.
00:55:36And that's huge.
00:55:38I've got it 97-93 and it's 6-4.
00:55:43And, uh, but I recognize the fact that that is a close fight.
00:55:47The crowd was so for Norris it might have been for the judge's election.
00:55:54The Polish fans in support of Andrew Gallardo.
00:55:57You saw Andrew's wife, Mariola.
00:56:01And now we await the judges.
00:56:06When it's about time, we'll see a good heavyweight champion fight.
00:56:09And this heavyweight fight was a nice heavyweight fight.
00:56:22Very early in the round, Orland Norris unloading that overhand right.
00:56:26His best punch by far.
00:56:27Left and the right.
00:56:28And the right lands clean.
00:56:30With Gallardo's credit, he did come back and land some good shots of his own.
00:56:33But that started things.
00:56:35Later in the round, he backs Orland Norris into the corner.
00:56:39And he looks for that right hand.
00:56:40There's one over the top.
00:56:41One to the body.
00:56:42Another one too.
00:56:44Norris' arms just too short to cut that distance down.
00:56:47He misses with some more overhand rights.
00:56:49But you might think that this fight could wind up a draw.
00:56:54Which I really would hate.
00:56:55It could.
00:56:56But the good news, no DQ, no NC, as in no contest.
00:57:01A good, clean, hard fought, competitive fight.
00:57:04No fouling.
00:57:05And Jimmy Lennon Jr. has the answer in his hand.
00:57:09Let's go to our ring announcer, Jimmy Lennon Jr.
00:57:11Ladies and gentlemen, after 10 rounds of action here at the Mandalay Bay, we go to the scorecards.
00:57:17And we have a unanimous decision.
00:57:20Here are the score totals.
00:57:22Judge at ringside Patricia Jarman Manning scores the amount 97 to 94.
00:57:28Judge Carol Custavano scores it 98 to 92.
00:57:31Dwayne Ford sees the amount 99 to 91.
00:57:35All three in favor of the winner, Andrew Galata.
00:57:41Well, they give the unanimous decision to Galata.
00:57:45A little surprised by the disparity.
00:57:4899-91 is outrageous.
00:57:50That is wild.
00:57:51That's nine rounds to one.
00:57:5399-91 Dwayne Ford.
00:57:55That's just too much space in between.
00:57:59And pretty much the same for Castellano.
00:58:0198 was at 98-92.
00:58:02You know what?
00:58:03That's outrageous.
00:58:04I'll tell you what.
00:58:05The game, of course, no credit for defense for blocking and some of his counterpunching.
00:58:09They just discounted everything, I think.
00:58:12Not that Norris was wrong, but the fight should have been a lot closer than that in the scoring.
00:58:17I thought the fight was razor thin for Galata.
00:58:20I thought he won it by just a little bit.
00:58:23Unbelievable.
00:58:26Let's get it up to Tim Smith right now to make some sense of this.
00:58:29Tim.
00:58:30Okay, Arnold Norris.
00:58:36We're here right now with Arnold Norris.
00:58:40You just heard the decision did not go your way.
00:58:43Did you think that you had the fight won?
00:58:46Of course I did.
00:58:47I mean, I controlled the fight.
00:58:49You know, I mean, it's just, you know, difficult.
00:58:54I mean, I'm not, you know, watching it, but, you know, I know I'm controlling the fight, you know, throughout, you know.
00:59:01One fight headed 90.
00:59:02One judge scored at 99, I believe, to 91.
00:59:07Can you believe that score?
00:59:09Uh, no, I don't believe it, but at the same time, I do.
00:59:14You know, it's, you know, it's kind of the story of my life, you know.
00:59:20It's, uh, everybody says I'm too small to be a heavyweight, but then they do this to me, you know.
00:59:26Yeah.
00:59:27Overall, though, it's sort of a redemptive fight for you, an aborted fight against Tyson, but you come in here, you fight a tough fight, you do things that you wanted to do.
00:59:37You got inside, you hit him with some shots, you hit him with the overhand right a couple of times, you hurt him.
00:59:42I mean, uh, can you walk out of here with any kind of good feeling about the fight?
00:59:47Uh, you know, I'm not a person to be down anyway, you know.
00:59:53I mean, this is, this is, this is boxing.
00:59:55This is the state of boxing, so, you know, I just, you know, go on about my life, you know, and live my life, you know.
01:00:01Okay.
01:00:02Do you feel like you've answered the critics who thought that you might have quit against Tyson?
01:00:08Uh, yeah, I did.
01:00:09I did.
01:00:10Uh, I answered the critics, um...
01:00:14Where do you go from here now?
01:00:16Well, I'm not even, I'm not even thinking about, you know.
01:00:19Okay.
01:00:20Beyond, beyond this point, you know.
01:00:21Okay.
01:00:22All right.
01:00:23Thanks.
01:00:24Thanks a lot.
01:00:25We're right here.
01:00:26Andrew, you heard the decision here.
01:00:28Uh, you, you said in the, uh, in the fight against Michael Grant, no one told you that you were winning the fight.
01:00:35Did anybody tell you tonight that you were winning the fight, or did you have a sense that you were winning the fight?
01:00:39Uh, no one had to, because the referee was very, very fair, you know.
01:00:44I didn't make any, any problem with that, you know.
01:00:47I knew who was winning the fight.
01:00:48It was me.
01:00:49You knew you were winning the fight.
01:00:50Yeah.
01:00:51Uh, what did you want to do in this fight?
01:00:53I mean, what did you want to do with Orlan Norris?
01:00:55He's a shorter man.
01:00:56Uh, what did you want to do?
01:00:58What was your strategy?
01:00:59He surprised me a little bit.
01:01:00You know, I thought he's not, not that tough, you know.
01:01:02He can take a punch, you know, he doesn't care.
01:01:05And it's good for him, you know.
01:01:07It's, I'm really, I would say, you know, he's very tough, not tough guy, you know.
01:01:12Uh, you, you said you had trouble sort of focusing.
01:01:15Sometimes you drift, and that's when the fouls occur.
01:01:18How were you able to keep your focus tonight?
01:01:21Uh, well, I correct a couple of mistakes, what I did before, you know, in the past.
01:01:27So, I was in trouble with that.
01:01:30But, basically, I tried to fight today, you know.
01:01:33I tried to box, and show my skills, you know, to anybody else, you know.
01:01:37Okay.
01:01:38Now, you, uh, looking at Tyson, and you fought Orlan Norris tonight.
01:01:42He's a short guy.
01:01:44Tyson's a short guy.
01:01:45Uh, any thoughts about how Tyson will match up?
01:01:48Do you get a good picture now of what you're going to be facing when you fight Tyson?
01:01:52Oh, it's no, it's no matchup, you know.
01:01:54Tyson's a real faster and stronger guy, I think, you know.
01:01:57And, you know what, it would be very interesting fight with me.
01:02:01You think it'll, you think it'll be a tougher fight than this fight tonight?
01:02:05Much tougher.
01:02:06Much tougher.
01:02:07This guy didn't go anywhere, though.
01:02:09Well, he tried to.
01:02:10You know, he tried to.
01:02:11But, you know, I showed my skills, you know.
01:02:14I didn't let him hit myself, you know.
01:02:17That's not the major thing, you know.
01:02:19Okay.
01:02:20So this was a redemptive fight for you.
01:02:22No fouls, clean fight, good, hard fight.
01:02:24You got some work in.
01:02:25And, uh, you're looking forward to what next?
01:02:27You know, I stepped, I stepped a couple steps backward, you know.
01:02:31After I lost, you know, to Michael Grant, you know.
01:02:34I had car accident, you know.
01:02:35I was unable to fight.
01:02:37Today, you know, performance, you know, showed that I'm still able to fight, you know, in pretty good shape.
01:02:43Okay.
01:02:44Thanks a lot.
01:02:45Back to you, Steve.
01:02:46All right, Tim.
01:02:47So some controversy, not in that Galata wins, but that the scores were so unusual.
01:02:54Carol Castellano had Galata winning by the wide margin of 98-92.
01:02:58Dwayne Ford had it unbelievably 99-91 in favor of Galata.
01:03:03And Patricia Jarman Manning had it a lot closer.
01:03:06I think more in the, uh, in the line of thinking of, uh, the people ringside here in terms of my partners, 97-94.
01:03:15Much closer at home as far as the online scoring was concerned.
01:03:18They had it Galata 6-4 with Galata winning the last four rounds.
01:03:23So Andrew Galata in clean fashion, able to, uh, pull off the victory here over Orlin Norris.
01:03:30So with this victory here tonight, Andrew Galata perhaps throws his hat into serious heavyweight title contention.
01:03:37The general idea, of course, is to separate the pretenders from the contenders.
01:03:42Of course, last week the, uh, number one IBF contender, David Tua, made his statement in emphatic fashion,
01:03:47establishing himself as the leading candidate for Lennox Lewis' belts.
01:03:51But next week, former undisputed heavyweight champ Mike Tyson gets another opportunity to sway opinion.
01:03:57And you can see it right here on Showtime.
01:04:01This June, the biggest names in heavyweight boxing are taking Showtime by storm.
01:04:08Mike Tyson, he's still the most ferocious man to get in the ring.
01:04:12Mike Tyson, he won't quit till he's champion again.
01:04:15But first, he must get by the big right hand of Lou Savarese.
01:04:1839 wins, 32 knockouts, and one big dream.
01:04:22Mike Tyson, name any other heavyweight you'd rather see fight.
01:04:26Tyson vs. Savarese, Saturday at 9, only on Showtime.
01:04:35All right, we'll talk about that in a moment.
01:04:37But first, your final thoughts on Galata vs. Norris.
01:04:40Well, you know, I don't think Galata made the statement that he was looking for.
01:04:43Orland Norris came to make a statement and fought well and fought the fight very close,
01:04:46much closer than I thought the judges gave him credit for.
01:04:49But Andrew Galata still wins.
01:04:51How about Tyson vs. Savarese next Saturday night in Scotland?
01:04:54Will this be a repeat performance of Tyson Francis?
01:04:57No, I think Savarese has much more to bring to the table than did Julius Francis.
01:05:03However, when I say this, Savarese also knows the urgency of the situation.
01:05:07He may not have too many more shots at the big time.
01:05:09Tyson really wants to get back in title contention.
01:05:12I think Mike's going to be too much for him.
01:05:14I think it's going to be a fight that doesn't go much longer than the Francis fight.
01:05:17All right, let's turn back to the fight doctor here, Ferdie Pacheco.
01:05:21Ferdie, what's your take right now on the overall heavyweight picture as it stands?
01:05:25Well, I think it's like a gigantic omelette, especially after what happened here.
01:05:28I mean, all these guys are just like eggs ready to be broken and mixed together to see who comes out.
01:05:32I think it's the most interesting group of heavyweights in a long time that are more or less around the same quality.
01:05:40with Lennox Lewis and Tyson, maybe a little ahead of everybody else.
01:05:43It's going to make for a very interesting year of eliminations before we see who is the predominant champion.
01:05:49And it will be an interesting fight probably between Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson.
01:05:54And once again, as you leave ringside, we want to wish you the best of luck.
01:05:58We'll see you soon.
01:05:59Yeah, we're going to be around.
01:06:00Bobby?
01:06:01Well, I'll tell you what, many years ago, almost 20, you covered some of my first fights on Sports World.
01:06:05And you gave me my first shot at broadcasting when you got laryngitis.
01:06:0820 years later, we're still together.
01:06:09So I know a champ when I see one.
01:06:11It's been fun working with both of you.
01:06:13But we're not going far.
01:06:15I'm not going far.
01:06:16I'm just going to be right over there.
01:06:18All right, all the best.
01:06:19As we wind things down, let's give you a final recap of tonight's results here at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
01:06:25Young Juan Lizcano trying to get himself closer to world title contention.
01:06:28Able to place three-time world champion aging Wilfredo Vasquez on his hit list.
01:06:33That was an impressive victory.
01:06:35And in our main event, Andrew Galata still looking to get his volatile career on track.
01:06:39Took a step in the right direction with a victory over former world champ Orland Norris.
01:06:46That'll do it for another edition of Showtime Championship Boxing.
01:06:49Hope you enjoyed it.
01:06:50For the fight doctor, Freddie Pacheco, Bobby Chez, Tim Smith, our entire crew,
01:06:55Steve Albert saying so long from Las Vegas.
01:07:16Good luck with you.
01:07:28Hey-ya-ya.
01:07:31Hey-ya-ya.
01:07:35Butт Davis say so long from Las Vegas.
01:07:37Bye-ya.
01:09:10Wait till he's champion again.
01:09:11But first, he must get by the big right hand of Lou Savarese.
01:09:1539 wins, 32 knockouts, and one big dream.
01:09:19Mike Tyson.
01:09:20Name any other heavyweight you'd rather see fight.
01:09:23Tyson versus Savarese.
01:09:25Saturday, June 24th, only on Showtime.
