In this special report, India Today Senior Correspondent Piyush Mishra investigates the deadly water contamination crisis in Indore's Bhagirathpura, where the death toll has risen to 14. The broadcast highlights the 'failure of system' as residents are forced to consume sewage-laced water or buy expensive bottled supplies. The tragedy has sparked a political firestorm, with AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi and SP's Akhilesh Yadav questioning the BJP's governance in India's cleanest city. While MP Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya assures a fix within two days, Piyush Mishra's ground report reveals long-standing negligence and the grim reality of insects in drinking water.

00:00Welcome to the state of Madhya Pradesh now.
00:02It's a tragedy that's come about with regards to water contamination
00:05that has been marring this very particular city.
00:08Lab tests confirm contaminated water as the reason behind the Indoor water tragedy.
00:13The report accessed by India Today states that contaminated water caused deaths and left people ill.
00:17It further said that pipeline leakage led to water contamination.
00:21Meanwhile, MP Minister Kailaj Vijayvargya himself has assured people
00:25that the problem will be fixed within just two days.
00:28The opposition, however, has launched a scathing attack on the BJP over the tragedy.
00:32Samajwadi Party Supremo Akhilesh Yadav has said that this is the reality of BJP's smart cities,
00:38questioning how Indoor can win cleanliness awards.
00:41The AIMIM Supremo Asaduddin OSE has echoed the same.
00:47He has accused the BJP of failing on basic governance,
00:50saying that the party talks of bulldozers but cannot provide clean drinking water,
00:55which is, of course, a basic necessity for human life.
00:59Now, the fallout has also been swift over this.
01:01The National Human Rights Commission has taken sumo to cognizance,
01:05notices being issued to the State Chief Secretary,
01:08and the High Court has sought a status report from the government within a matter of two weeks.
01:12That's the ultimatum that's been given.
01:13The tragedy has forced residents, in fact,
01:15to buy packaged water burning holes in the pockets of the residents.
01:19The National Human Rights Commission has been given to the people who have been given the time.
01:49There is a culture report in the college, so when it will be better, it will be better.
01:55This work will continue to continue, because we are going to listen to that
01:59that if there is any symptom or late symptom, then there is no symptom.
02:05We all have the medical care.
02:08The fact that the water is in the water, there is a contaminant.
02:15This is why the treatment was already started.
02:19I also think that the treatment is the best place.
02:25We will check the rest of the 100 percent.
02:32We will be able to check the entire colony for 18 days.
02:36We will be able to check the whole micro-checking.
02:39People have seen clean water.
02:42We will be able to check the whole chamber.
02:45Today, the 100 percent.
02:47We have seen that there were 17 cases.
02:49But it was mild.
02:50It was not a situation.
02:51It was a problem.
02:52It was not a problem.
02:53Today, it is not a problem.
02:54Now, we have water supply of Narvada.
02:56We are going to be a storm.
02:58We are going to be a storm.
02:59We are going to be a tank with five tanks.
03:01They are going to be water.
03:02The water is going to be sufficient in our homes.
03:06Indore is supposed to be the cleanest city in India.
03:09I mean, if something like this is happening in the cleanest city of the Bhatiav and Chanta party rule state, imagine in a village in Bihar what will be the state of affairs.
03:19And this is very, very serious.
03:21Eight people have died drinking contaminated water.
03:25How did this water get contaminated with sewage?
03:28That's what they say.
03:29So, definitely what I would say is that there is a lot of corruption happening.
03:34And sab kuch dikhawat hai.
03:36There is a lot of gautala happening in this place.
03:39And the most important thing is they have to take action.
03:42Compensation by money will not get back the lives.
03:45If you want to stop something, send these people to jail.
03:49Who has done this?
03:50Who has caused the death?
03:51And that's the most important thing.
03:54Piyush Mishra joins us from Indore at this given point of time.
03:58Piyush, a very good morning to you.
04:00Let's understand what exactly is the situation today in Indore.
04:03I can see people right behind you.
04:06They've been going through a tragic period of time with the water being contaminated,
04:11many being ill and currently in the hospital.
04:14Many lives being lost.
04:16And now also they are having to buy bottled water,
04:19which is a pinch on their pockets as well.
04:26Well, absolutely no doubt about it that people are forced to buy clean water
04:30and they are paying around 30 to 40 rupees per bottle for the clean drinking water.
04:37Right now we are here in Bagratpura of Indore.
04:40And we are at a point from where we can show to our viewers the reality check,
04:45the ground reality of this situation and why this actually happened.
04:50You can see this is the main line.
04:52This is the main water line, the main boring water line which people use for their daily purpose.
04:58And as of now it has been blocked but you can open it by using few steps and you can see as to how the water is coming out of this.
05:07And let's also move ahead.
05:08I would ask my video journalist Sanjay to come with me and then we will show you more visuals.
05:12This is the water which people use everyday for their daily drinking purpose or different purposes.
05:19At the same time this water pipeline which is here, with this we have the sewer pipeline.
05:26So you can see as to how the sewer line and the main water line which goes in the houses of people is connected.
05:35And that is one of the reasons that contaminated the entire water.
05:38There was a leakage in one of the connections because of this the contaminated water entered into the clean water.
05:44And because of that many people were forced to drink the contaminated water.
05:48Also we have a sample of the water which is being procured by people and you can see as to how I have a boy with me.
05:56Who is holding a glass in his hand and you can see the kind of water people are forced to drink.
06:02This is the contaminated water and this situation is persisting for the last many many years.
06:08And there is no solution which is coming to the fore.
06:11So here we are showing you the ground reality of the contaminated water of Bagratpura in Indoor.
06:18And people are forced to drink this polluted, this contaminated water everyday and everyday.
06:24And now the government has started taking few steps.
06:29The cleaning process is going on in various parts of Bagratpura.
06:32Let me also try to get in a word from the locals here.
06:35When is this water coming from the locals?
06:37I had enough water to get here with a Bakrat.
06:40First one one month, we haveенной a water jug.
06:42After that, let us dry examples of the water so we can apply, how water came from that odour?
06:43Even the water certainly is a barrier with water.
06:45Let it look when we drink this water in the water.
06:47This water has been lubricated right away for it .
06:48We cannot drink it.
06:49It does not drink itACE it before it comes from you .
06:50Now we do not drink it now okay?
06:51We have to drink

08:29So this is the failure of system, you know, Shriyad is the failure of system and also
08:57failure of politicians who every time, whenever there is election, local election, municipality
09:03election, they come here, they request people to vote for them and when real time comes,
09:08when there is time of working for the people of their society, of their community, but
09:14they do not work and that is the biggest problem and because of that we are now seeing how
09:18the actual water, the clean water getting contaminated because the proper work has not been done
09:25and after 14 people have died, we are now seeing how cleaning process has started here.
09:30I would ask my video generally, Samir, to come with me and then we will show you how the
09:33sewage cleaning is now taking place here in this lane of Bhagiratpura.
09:38The entire, you know, neighborhood is forced to drink the contaminated water.
09:45After 14 people have lost their lives, now it seems like the government, the authorities
09:50have decided to clean this area and after the cleaning, people are now having their water,
09:56you know, people are now looking forward to have clean water in their houses.
10:01Shriya.

10:16that they were getting, there seemed something off with it for days and many people have
10:21come out to say that they reported it earlier as well but that went completely ignored.
10:27There was no action that was taken at that given point of time.
10:30This clean-up drive is coming in after lives have been lost and that is the very problem.
10:38Well, absolutely, well, absolutely.
10:40I will try to take in a response from the locals here.

11:07it's not covered.
11:07Let's go and see. Let's go and see what is the reality here on the ground. People are really agitated. We are showing you the live visuals from Bagiratpura and they are requesting us to accompany them. They want to show the reality and we are also entering in the same lane where they have their houses and also the contaminated water which is there in Bagiratpura.
