In South Australia, the State Emergency Service is warning holidaymakers to look up before choosing a camping or parking spot this summer. The combination of dry and hot conditions increases the risk of falling tree branches.

00:00The combination of hot and dry weather has been keeping the State Emergency Service busy.
00:07Right across the state we are seeing trees down on houses, cars.
00:11Recently there was even a tree down at a market where someone was injured.
00:16This damage caused by a recent falling branch on the Port Lincoln foreshore
00:20is an example of how dangerous trees can be.
00:23Hotter days lead to a higher risk of falling branches.
00:26During extreme heat events, heat waves or just a few hot days, trees like to protect themselves
00:32and to do that they'll drop branches or completely fall over.
00:36As summer kicks in, arborists are getting busy.
00:39It's kind of increasing now, just getting into summer with the heat and everything,
00:43so cool outs for heat, stress and sudden limb drops are getting up there again.
00:49It's just about public awareness I suppose when it comes to risk and safety.
00:54For those planning on camping this summer, experts recommend looking up before choosing a spot to pitch a tent.
00:59And parents are urged to talk to kids about climbing trees.
01:02In extreme heat, avoid sitting, camping or hanging out under trees.
01:07That includes kids or the kids at heart who like to try and climb in them.
