Country Fire Service volunteers in South Australia's Riverland say they are experiencing roadside abuse while responding to incidents.

00:00We do get a lot of abuse to members for stopping and people can't get through in a hurry.
00:07And we get a lot of rubberneckers that want to film the accidents as they go through.
00:12And we get a lot of people that want to speed through.
00:15Mr Arnold's daughter has also been at the receiving end.
00:18I was caught in almighty abuse one day and I had to go to the local police to get help because they just kept going off at me.
00:27It's behaviour that has consequences.
00:30CFS volunteers are covered in legislation as a prescribed emergency worker which means any abuse to a CFS volunteer is an extremely serious offence.
00:39And it comes at a time when regional brigades are struggling to recruit, forcing some crews to call for help.
00:45As a captain that is the worst feeling in the world when you have to ring Adelaide Fire and say look we don't have a crew.
00:52You feel like you've let your whole community down.
00:55CFS volunteer numbers are at a decade low and regional captains think a media blitz would help.
01:01It's not to dismiss that a TV campaign would add some value.
01:05We just are seeing good results through that community based approach at the moment.
01:09While recruitment challenges won't be solved overnight, the message this fire danger season is clear.
01:15Volunteers want respect and they want to get on with the job.
01:19It's no one's fault accidents happen and people just look to the first person they can unfortunately and sometimes that's just us in orange overalls.
