A 15-year-old boy has died after crashing an e-bike into a power pole in Tasmania’s northwest last night. It was one of two fatal crashes yesterday, pushing the state to its worst road toll since 2022.

00:00Crash investigators at the scene where a teenage boy died on New Year's Eve.
00:06Police say the 15-year-old from Devonport was riding an electric bike,
00:10also known as an e-bike, along Donheads Road before the crash happened about 8 o'clock.
00:15He's lost control and has collided with a pole on the side of the road.
00:19A nearby resident has heard the crash and has gone out to try to render immediate assistance,
00:23but unfortunately this young boy, this young man has died at the scene, which is a tragedy.
00:28Police believe it's the first fatal e-bike crash in Tasmania.
00:32They haven't revealed what type of e-bike the boy was riding and don't yet know if he was wearing a helmet.
00:38There was a helmet located at the scene,
00:40but it's yet to be confirmed whether he was actually wearing it at the time of the crash.
00:43The teenager was under the legal age to be riding an e-bike in Tasmania.
00:47In Tasmania legislation is you must be 16 years or older to ride an e-bike.
00:52A separate fatal crash happened yesterday afternoon just outside Campbelltown.
00:56A 72-year-old man from the Launceston suburb of Kings Meadows was riding a motorbike along a bendy part of Macquarie Road.
01:03On a left-hand bend, he's crossed to the wrong side of the road and collided with a culvert
01:07and has then come off his motorbike and suffered injuries that unfortunately have led to him passing away at the scene.
01:12Police say there's no indication speeding, alcohol or drugs were involved.
01:16The two crashes yesterday brought the total number of people who died on Tasmania's roads in 2025 to 44.
01:23It's the highest road toll for the state since 2022.
