00:00An eight-year-old boy was riding an e-bike along Kawana Way at around 3 p.m. yesterday,
00:08so just after school, 3.30 I should say, just after school had finished, when he collided
00:12with a 15-year-old boy who was also riding an e-bike coming in the opposite direction.
00:18The force of that head-on collision led to the eight-year-old suffering serious head
00:23injuries, and he was transported to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, but later died
00:28as a result of those injuries. The 15-year-old boy was relatively unscathed after the incident,
00:34actually refused treatment, police say, and is now assisting them with their inquiries.
00:40It is very early stages, and we're not sure whether these boys were wearing helmets at
00:44the time or what kind of e-bike they were riding. There's obviously a number of different varieties.
00:50In Queensland, there are power restrictions for legal e-bikes, but there are no age restrictions
00:56on who can ride them, unlike when you're talking about things like e-scooters. So the investigation
01:01is ongoing. The Forensic Crash Unit is looking into this incident. They've asked any witnesses
01:06that might have been in the sort of Mountain Creek area, Kawana Way area at the time to get
01:10in contact, and also anyone who may have footage, perhaps even dash cam, who might have been
01:15driving past around 3.30 p.m. yesterday.
01:18Incredibly sad. Thank you very much, Will Murray.
