00:00And without looking at your watch you know what time it is right now yeah now without looking at your wash you held the tag
00:11What does the tag say on it that you must do did they just come through and it rocked you so hard that it snapped
00:18Hey, buddy relax relax
00:21Relax the boats were going like this my sliding glass doors were opening and closing my cabinets were opening closing
00:27So I can smell the odor alcohol. Yeah, it's this man is operating under the influence. He will be going to jail
00:35Nevada a land of extremes
00:39From the strip to the summits. It's wild country
00:43Home to more than 900 species and a way of life worth protecting
00:49Preserved for the people and the wildlife that call it home one team
00:54Stans guard this is
00:59Nevada wild
01:01My name is James Mortimer I'm a game warden with the Nevada Department of Wildlife
01:23I'm in the western region here in Washoe County
01:27Within that is Reno and Sparks about 400,000 population and above I was born and raised here in the Reno area
01:36It's where I was fishing and hunting for most of my life
01:38So it's fun to be able to be in areas that I know a lot of those outdoorsmen are
01:44Recreating I'm heading up to Lake Tahoe and we'll be patrolling by boat
01:48We're going to meet up with game warden Brittany Ryder and look for any reckless operators
01:54Operating under the influence or any other violations regarding watercraft or vessels
02:00Brittany Ryder patrols Lake Tahoe specifically and then assists any other wardens with patrol during hunting season
02:08Brittany how are we now good all right well let's get after it then
02:22Any big troubles with the paddleboarders at all?
02:25So there's some paddleboarders over at the point that the lifeguards see that without a life jacket and some of them might be kids
02:31Okay
02:31He's not even noticing us he's just paying attention to his phone
02:53Hello state game warden how you doing?
02:56Hey reason I'm coming up is I don't see a life jacket on board
02:59Wow okay
03:00Is that an inflatable life jacket or no?
03:02No
03:02Okay so Nevada law says you need to have a life jacket on board
03:05It doesn't need to be worn but it needs to be on the board okay
03:08You know how far off from the shore you are here?
03:10Yeah
03:10Probably about a quarter mile half mile right?
03:12Yeah
03:12Do me a favor just come up to my boat for me okay?
03:15Thank you
03:15Thank you
03:16Where are you from?
03:19Yeah sure I'm from Ukraine
03:21Ukraine?
03:21Yeah
03:22Okay you're on work visa or something like that?
03:25Yeah
03:25I understand coming from Ukraine you might not know all our laws and violations
03:29and everything like that
03:30So you need to have a life jacket on board okay?
03:32Life jacket
03:32So you don't need to wear it but it needs to be on board okay?
03:35Uh-huh
03:36We have a lot of issues out here with people they think that they can swim to shore
03:40but when it's in cold water like this their muscles start to lock up
03:44they can't swim as good and they drown
03:45It happens more than you think
03:47Now that you're on our boat do me a favor throw that on for me
03:51Thank you so nice
03:52Yeah
03:52What's your first name?
03:55It's a work visa
03:58After war started in Ukraine
04:00Okay
04:00Me and my son
04:02Yeah
04:02Comes to America
04:03Okay
04:04Have a work
04:05Yeah
04:05It is difficult to learn the laws and regulations when you move from Ukraine
04:10I'll use it as an educational opportunity
04:12and tell them about the laws here in the state of Nevada
04:15If you're going to come back you have to get a life jacket okay?
04:18Thank you
04:18Okay
04:19I understand
04:19Okay
04:20Thank you very much
04:20Best of luck to work and everything like that
04:23Thank you
04:23Yeah
04:23Have a good day
04:25Yeah you as well
04:2523
04:27Stay game warden how we doing?
04:46Good
04:46The reason for the stop is you don't have an observer on board okay?
04:49Um so while you're towing any two behind you
04:51You need to have an observer on board
04:53Which means you're operating
04:54Paying full attention to what you're doing while driving
04:57And then you have to have another person on board
04:59Watching the kids and having a flag ready okay?
05:02Can you just get the kids on board for me real quick?
05:10Uh do you have that registration available?
05:13In the house
05:13In the house?
05:14Yeah
05:14Do you have a driver's license here in Nevada?
05:18Yeah
05:18How long have you been on the water?
05:20Like eight in the morning
05:21Okay without looking at your watch do you know what time it is right now?
05:23Yeah
05:24No without looking at your watch
05:25Three o'clock
05:26Three o'clock
05:27I'm not drinking I don't drink
05:28Okay okay well the reason why I'm asking is that there's
05:31Yeah that was for the other
05:32Empty beer cans and everything like that okay?
05:34So I can smell the odor of alcohol?
05:36Yeah
05:36My name is Victor Jordan I'm a game warden with the Nevada Department of Wildlife
05:50Based out of Las Vegas
05:52I was born here
05:53I do have a family member who works for the department
05:56My sister Brittany works out of Reno area and patrols out on Lake Tahoe
06:01I got the job a few years later she asked me about it was very intrigued by it and says hey
06:07I think that's something that I'd like to do I said well come on let's go let's do it
06:11And uh she tested for us and nobody ever knew that she was my sister and she got the job on her own
06:17And when everybody found out that she was my sister they were all kind of upset with us
06:21That we never told them
06:23Today I'm going to be going to a local meat processor
06:26Basically we have one professional meat processor in all of Las Vegas
06:30So anytime anyone in the Las Vegas area harvests an animal and they want it professionally processed
06:37They bring it to this local processor
06:38We kind of go over there and make sure that everybody's animals are tagged and punched correctly
06:49How's it going guys?
06:50Good
06:51Good
06:52Just going to be checking some tags in here you got many carcasses in?
06:54Uh yeah we got probably about 20 in yesterday
06:58Yeah
06:58And maybe four already today
07:00Yeah
07:00And eight on Saturday
07:01Yeah
07:02Yeah
07:02Right on
07:03Yeah
07:03Good good cool thanks man
07:09So here I'm checking tags to see if it's punched
07:12Make sure that the dates kind of correspond
07:15This guy here harvested on August 21st
07:18He clearly notched it out
07:20He wrote in the unit 222
07:22And sometimes we'll just look at the carcass and make sure that they brought in
07:25A proper amount of meat for that animal
07:28If you're only seeing two quarters or a small bag
07:31Kind of wonder where the rest of the meat went
07:34So here you can see on this tag
07:36He's got an antelope
07:37Horns longer
07:38And what did he do?
07:40He circled the month
07:41He circled the date
07:42He circled that it was a male
07:44So this is a violation
07:45In the instructions it says
07:47Immediately upon reaching the harvested animal
07:49Number one
07:50Clearly notch the month and day of kill
07:54Marking the blocks with a pencil
07:56Is not acceptable and not as bold
07:59So he used a pen pencil here
08:02It clearly says it right on the tag
08:03So that's a violation
08:04Sometimes if they use pen and they do it light
08:07You can just rub the tag a few times with your thumb
08:09And rub off the date
08:11Hopefully when they get the meat back from the processor
08:14They look at their tag
08:15They look at it and say hey I can rub that off
08:17I'm gonna go harvest another animal
08:19This guy did it pretty bold
08:20But at some point he didn't follow the laws of the state of Nevada
08:25We pay him a visit and find out what he was thinking
08:29Now the whole reason why we check tags
08:31Make sure that people are obeying by the law
08:32Your resource would be diminished immediately
08:35So here's one that we really hate to see
08:38This is a mule deer that's not punched
08:41And I'm not seeing even a slice
08:42The problem is this is a junior
08:44So it looks like it was a girl who shot it
08:47I'm sure with her dad
08:49And she didn't punch it
08:51So whoever's taking her
08:52And teaching her how to hunt is not teaching her the proper method
08:57So we always hate to deal with crimes with minors
09:01But they need to be shown the right way
09:03And we want to keep the next generation continuing to hunt
09:07And when you have a minor who committed a crime
09:10Sometimes it's not fun to deal with that
09:12I just got to take some notes real quick and
09:14Find out who they are and go pay him a visit
09:16So I can smell the odor of alcohol
09:23Yeah
09:24I don't know if it's coming from the empty cans or not
09:27Okay
09:27Would you be willing to submit to testing?
09:30Yeah
09:30Okay
09:31If you can keep your life jacket on board
09:33And then just come up to the front of my boat right here
09:34I can smell the odor of alcohol
09:37Coming from the vessel
09:39And possibly the operator
09:41This could be very dangerous
09:42He's got three children on board with no operator
09:45And it could be very easy that one of these kids go overboard
09:47And he's not attentive enough to know that they've fallen overboard
09:51So when's the last time you had a drink?
09:57Okay
09:57So like I said
09:59I can smell the odor of alcohol coming out of the boat
10:01If it's just the empty beer cans that's messing me up
10:05I'll be able to just tell with this one test
10:07It's just a horizontal gaze nystagmus
10:09So follow the stimulus
10:11Which is the tip of my finger with your eyes and your eyes only
10:13And keep your head still, okay?
10:15This isn't something that we can use officer discretion
10:25If this man is operating under the influence
10:28And is above the legal limit
10:29There is no discretion here
10:31He will be going to jail today
10:32If this man is operating under the influence
10:47And is above the legal limit
10:48He will be going to jail today
10:49All right, just keep following the stimulus with your eyes, okay?
10:52All right, you can relax, man
11:01If you had alcohol above the legal limit
11:03Usually what your eyes are going to do is going to bounce, okay?
11:06I'm not seeing anything like that in your eyes today
11:08I'm not going to continue forward with the operating under the influence investigation
11:11You're all good to go
11:12What I am going to do, I am going to issue you a citation today
11:15For not having an operator on board
11:18While you're towing a vessel, okay?
11:19Just give us a second
11:20So if you jump back on the vessel, you're good to go
11:22I'll be issuing a citation for operating without an observer
11:27The fine does carry $195
11:30And it is a misdemeanor violation here in the state of Nevada
11:33I do need a signature from you
11:34It's not a mission of guilt
11:35Just saying that you'll take care of it
11:37I do have to warn you
11:38If you fail to take care of it, we'll go to Warren, all right?
11:40You have any questions for us?
11:42Okay
11:43Thank you for staying sober
11:45And making sure everybody can operate out here, okay?
11:48Enjoy your summer
11:48I'll see you later
11:49I'm glad he's operating safe and he's out here
11:56But he just needs to make sure he's got some sort of observer behind him
11:59Hopefully he's learned his lesson
12:01Yeah
12:02So just leaving the meat processor and found a tag not properly punched
12:13So we're going to go over and investigate
12:15Find out his story
12:16And determine whether it needs to be a citation
12:19Hey, how are you?
12:36Hey, how you doing?
12:37I'm available
12:38That's you?
12:39Hey
12:39I'm Victor Jordan
12:40Game warden
12:41Nevada Department of Wildlife
12:43No, I'm good right here
12:44Yeah, so
12:45Uh, here to ask you a few questions about your hunt
12:47Okay
12:48So, uh, how did it go?
12:50Went good
12:50Went good
12:51It was successful
12:52First thing Saturday morning
12:54We heard about the heat
12:54Got it to the side-by-side
12:56Put the tag on it
12:57Took it all the way back to camp
12:58Got in the shade
12:59And, um, got a quarter of it
13:01The reason why I'm here
13:02Is because I've looked at your history
13:04You've been hunting for a while
13:05Okay
13:05And, uh, you're expected to know
13:07What to do with the tag, right?
13:09Supposed to punch the tag?
13:10Well, I did
13:11I squared out 22
13:12I wrote in 251
13:14Yeah
13:14And I wrote August
13:15Did you read what the tag said?
13:17No
13:18It's right on the tag
13:19About notching it
13:20Clearly notch it
13:21With a knife?
13:23Yeah
13:23Oh, I thought it was
13:24See, even my buddy
13:25Who, he's been hunting along with me
13:26It was
13:27We
13:27He even said it
13:28When I squirted out with a pen
13:30Yeah
13:30That if you didn't have a pen
13:31Then you were supposed to notch it
13:33But I just squirted it
13:34No, it doesn't say that
13:34It says to clearly notch it
13:36And it says do not use a pen
13:37And it's bolded
13:38Do not
13:39Okay
13:39So that's why I'm here
13:40Okay
13:41I did
13:41Okay
13:41So it looks like you did
13:43Everything else right
13:44Okay
13:45And the reason why we have
13:46An issue with that
13:47Is because
13:47You took it to malls
13:49You get it processed
13:50You get all your meat back
13:51You get your tag
13:52You wipe off the ink
13:53And you're back up
13:54And hunting again
13:56For another antelope
13:57I understand that?
13:59Yeah
13:59It's an education
14:00But also, unfortunately
14:01It comes with a citation
14:02Okay
14:03So, alright
14:03Do you have your ID on you?
14:04Yep, I'm ready
14:05Okay, thanks
14:06The tag does
14:07Specifically state
14:08That you shall not use
14:10Ink or pencil
14:11And clearly he has
14:13So it is a violation
14:14He will be receiving
14:15A citation today
14:16This is your ID bag
14:17Okay
14:17Okay, total bail amount
14:18195
14:19Additionally to the fine
14:20There's a six demerit
14:22Do you know about
14:22The demerit system?
14:23No, sir
14:23If you get 12
14:24Within five years
14:26You could have your hunting
14:27And fishing privileges revoked
14:28So
14:28Okay
14:29You're at six
14:30Okay
14:31For that
14:31Yep
14:32That's great
14:34So
14:34Until you gave me
14:35Those examples
14:35I never even
14:36Thought about any of that
14:37Yeah
14:38To do any of that
14:39And most sportsmen don't
14:40But it's the ones that do
14:42Think about those kind of things
14:43And do do those things
14:44That ruin it
14:45For everybody else
14:46And therefore
14:48We have to put those laws in place
14:49What I need from you
14:50Is a signature on the bottom
14:51It's just saying
14:51That you will take care of it
14:53All right, thanks
14:55You as well
14:56So although this individual
14:58Was a bit agitated
15:00I feel that just a simple education
15:02Is not enough
15:03And a citation would be
15:05A little more prudent
15:06My name is Aaliyah Lair
15:22I'm a game warden
15:24For the Department of Wildlife
15:25In the state of Nevada
15:26And I patrol southern Nevada
15:28Which encompasses
15:29A lot of Clark County
15:30So it's super busy
15:32On Lake Mead today
15:33Really nice weather
15:35It's about 90 degrees
15:36Lots of jet skis out today
15:38So I'm going to patrol the lake
15:39Make sure they're behaving
15:41Today I'm specifically
15:43Looking out for jet skis
15:45So making sure
15:46They have their equipment
15:46Life jacket is most important thing
15:49And then fire extinguisher as well
15:51But also making sure
15:52That they're obeying
15:54The wake zones
15:54Because that's a huge problem
15:56With how many people are here
15:57Are you able to step on that side
16:19And flip it
16:20So on the back
16:27It tells you which side
16:28You can step on
16:29To flip it this way
16:31There was a bit of a language barrier
16:34That I noticed
16:35So I'm communicating with them
16:37Hey, look at that sticker
16:38There's a proper side
16:40That you can spin it on
16:41Use your feet
16:42So I'm on my way to a junior hunter
17:01Basically a miner
17:03Who failed to punch her tag
17:06Being a miner
17:07It is a misdemeanor crime
17:10So having to have a misdemeanor
17:14On your record
17:15Having to go to juvenile court
17:17Having to take your parents
17:18With you to court
17:19All of that comes into play
17:21Whether a citation would be warranted
17:24Or simply a warning
17:26And an explanation of
17:28What the law actually requires them to do
17:31Just providing that education
17:33State police
17:39Hi, how are you?
17:44Is that here?
17:46Is she here?
17:47Why?
17:48Because I have some questions for her
17:49How about
17:49Is he here?
17:51He's at work?
17:53Okay
17:53She's right here?
17:55Okay
17:55All right, hi, how are you?
17:57Good, how are you?
17:58Good, I have some questions for you
18:00I'm state game warden
18:01I'm from Nevada
18:01And I saw that you harvested an animal
18:03And I just wanted to ask you
18:04About your hunt
18:05Um, well
18:07We got a deer
18:09Okay
18:09How did that go?
18:11So where did you get your deer?
18:12When was it?
18:14Well, we got it
18:15On the 22nd this month
18:18Okay
18:19And I saw it
18:21With some other deer
18:22Uh-huh
18:23Kind of off the dirt road
18:26And I shot it with my bow
18:27Okay
18:27You know, he dropped it off
18:29Of the bush
18:30To do the bush
18:31After we gutted it
18:33Okay
18:33All right, so
18:35There are some issues
18:36But you're not in trouble
18:37This is an education
18:38And then this is going to be
18:39An education for dad
18:40I'd really like to talk to him
18:42Is he the one who took you
18:43Or did
18:43Is this mom?
18:44Yeah
18:45Who's the one who's out
18:46With you out in the field?
18:48Dad
18:48Okay
18:48And then you, uh
18:49You dropped it off
18:50At the meat processor?
18:51Went into one
18:52Yeah
18:53So who carried your tag
18:54When you were hunting?
18:55It was just my dad
18:56So how come your dad
18:57Was carrying it
18:58And not you?
19:01Oh, is that dad?
19:03Yeah
19:03Perfect
19:04All right
19:05Yes, sir
19:13When you shot the deer
19:15Did the deer take off running?
19:17Yeah, he didn't go
19:19You can chime in anytime, dad
19:20Anytime
19:21I'm trying to understand
19:22What, I mean
19:23Okay, the tag thing
19:24Was wrong
19:26Maybe
19:26I, I, I
19:27As far as I, I can see
19:30I'm, I, you know
19:31And I was just trying
19:31To be responsible
19:32Fair enough
19:33So it didn't get lost
19:34So, I mean, again
19:35Fair enough
19:36So this is
19:37We notched it
19:37We, we did everything
19:38We were supposed to do
19:39Yeah
19:40So, what did we do wrong?
19:42So
19:42Stopping by
19:43So
19:43You want to talk to us
19:45Or
19:45Before I sit there
19:46And say, hey
19:47You know
19:47Take us to jail
19:49I'd like to find out
19:50What I'm
19:51Being charged with
19:52Or why I'm guilty
19:53You held the tag
19:55What does the tag say
19:56On it that you must do?
19:58It's fine
19:58Once you arrive
19:59To the animal
20:00What does the tag say
20:01That you must do?
20:02You knocked them
20:03Correct
20:03And right in the area
20:04That it was shot
20:05How do I know
20:06That that deer was shot
20:07In its correct location?
20:09What day was it shot on?
20:11She told me
20:11On the 22nd
20:12Okay
20:13How would
20:13How would I know
20:14That looking at the tag?
20:16Because it's
20:17Oh
20:17You know what?
20:18Yes
20:19Right
20:20We're tracking now?
20:22Let me
20:22Let me
20:23Okay
20:23Now I got you
20:24Let me step back
20:26And I'll explain
20:27All that to you
20:27Yeah, sure
20:28So
20:29We actually
20:30Pulled off
20:30The wrong tag
20:31The tag
20:32That we pulled off
20:33And notched
20:34Was
20:35We're going hunting
20:36In another three weeks
20:38For an antelope?
20:39The antelope
20:40Yep
20:41I notched the wrong tag
20:43Okay, so
20:44So, so
20:45Yes
20:45You can
20:46Wherever I have
20:48The other tag in the house
20:49But you can see
20:49The other tag
20:50Is already notched out
20:51Okay
20:52I just
20:52I just grabbed
20:53The wrong tag
20:54Okay
20:55Because I know
20:56That's one thing
20:57Absolutely
20:57You had to have
21:00The tag
21:00All the down
21:01Right
21:01Actually
21:02I was going to
21:02Call you guys up
21:03And ask you
21:04Because I mean
21:05The tag
21:05The promise
21:06The tag
21:06I have now
21:07Yeah
21:08Is notched out
21:09So I need to find out
21:10What to do
21:11To do with that tag
21:12Okay, well
21:12To be honest with you
21:13I do not know
21:14I'll get you an answer
21:15By the end of the day
21:16If I don't get an answer
21:18And I'm still waiting
21:19I'll call you
21:19By the end of the day
21:20And tell you
21:21That I don't have
21:22An answer yet
21:22Okay
21:23All right
21:24All right
21:25All right
21:25Thank you so much guys
21:26Have a nice day
21:27All right
21:27You too
21:27Thanks
21:27So after leaving
21:30These two individuals
21:31Determined to provide
21:33An education
21:33For a minor
21:35And a site
21:36For the individual
21:37Providing education
21:39Letting people understand
21:40Why it's important
21:41To punch your tag
21:43And let them know
21:45That we're out here
21:46And we're watching
21:46So it's super busy
21:56On Lake Mead today
21:57Lots of jet skis out today
21:59So I'm going to patrol the lake
22:01Make sure they're behaving
22:02Are you able to step on that side
22:09And flip it?
22:12There was a bit of a language barrier
22:15That I noticed
22:16And so I'm communicating
22:18With them
22:18Hey look at that sticker
22:20There's a proper side
22:21That you can spin it on
22:22Use your feet
22:23There we go
22:32There we go
22:45I know what's going on
22:53I know what's going on
22:57There we go
22:57Hey
23:00Hey
23:01Hey
23:07Let's go
23:10Hey
23:10So we got a little bit of smoke, which sometimes
23:24after a flip can happen.
23:27So it looks like the jet ski is good.
23:28They're taking it slow because they're
23:31nervous to flip again.
23:33Both of them had on life jackets, which is a huge thing,
23:35because a lot of people, even with life jackets,
23:37will panic because it's a shock of cold.
23:40Even though it's 80 degrees in the water,
23:42it's way colder than what it is outside.
23:44And also, you hit the water pretty hard when
23:46you come off the jet ski.
23:47So if they weren't wearing their life jackets,
23:49that would have turned into a rescue instead
23:51of an actual vessel assist.
23:53So that's one of the reasons why we preach having safety
23:56equipment with you and on you at all times
23:59and make sure that it's actually functional.
24:02I'll be clear of that vessel assist.
24:03Ocean Nora, 10-8.
24:07My name is Joe Barnes, I'm the Staff Specialist, Statewide Specialist,
24:31for the Wildlife Diversity Division, which just
24:33means I juggle a lot of grants.
24:35But on a personal level, my specialty
24:37has always been, for the past 17 or so years,
24:41I've been able to focus on birds of prey,
24:45peregrine falcons, golden eagles, a lot of cliff-nesting raptors.
24:51Hey, hey.
24:53How long you been here?
24:5415 minutes.
24:56Oh, that's not too bad.
24:58Mariah is another wildlife biologist with the department.
25:01So we're going to band some raptors, specifically a little-known hawk species.
25:06It's a phyrogenous hawk.
25:07She's coming out today to help me kind of keep the nestlings in check,
25:11corral them, restrain them once we get them in hand.
25:13We'll go up, check a couple sites, and then get an age.
25:18Hopefully there are some nestlings doing the blood and getting transmitters.
25:21We're going to try to track their movements and try to see how they use the landscape
25:25and what particular factors of the environment are most critical for the species.
25:30Okay.
25:31Cool.
25:32All right.
25:33These are solar-powered satellite transmitters, so, you know, once you get these transmitters
25:38out, it's a lot of hands-on work just to make it happen.
25:42But once they're out, I can sit there and download from my desk.
25:45I never once need to see or touch that bird again for the rest of its life.
25:50I just need to download data.
25:52So the data I get is GPS point every hour.
25:56I also get things like temperature.
25:58I get velocity.
25:59Yeah, you know, see if the bird's stopped in place or if it's moving, and also elevation.
26:06So I get usually meters above sea level, and so that way I can tell is the bird using thermals
26:13getting up in the air?
26:14Is it perched?
26:15Is it on a tree?
26:16Is it on a ridge line?
26:17Things like that.
26:18Hey, Joe, do you see the adult up in the sky to your left?
26:22Oh, no, I did not see that.
26:24Oh, I see.
26:25Yeah.
26:26There's a nest, a really small tree, but it's literally 150 yards out from the road.
26:35So my plan is to possibly put on a transmitter on at least one of its nestlings.
26:43So we only have the three transmitters.
26:45Maybe just put one here?
26:46That's what I'm kind of thinking.
26:47We put one here, and then we for sure had nestlings at the next site.
26:52So one here, one there.
26:55Gear.
26:56Gear up.
26:57Yes.
26:58I've got capillary tubes.
26:59Yeah, needles.
27:00I think we got everything.
27:01Yeah, if they start running, Joe, just drop the ladder.
27:06Yep.
27:07I'll get it.
27:08All right, here we go.
27:14This guy might be solo.
27:16OK.
27:17Oh.
27:18We're not getting that bird.
27:19No.
27:20All right.
27:21That is its fledging flight, I would say.
27:29How's it going?
27:31Not too bad.
27:33I'm going to fill up.
27:35Sweet.
27:42Hey, what's up?
27:55Yeah, I'll head over with you.
27:57If it's just that line, there's not much that we can do.
28:00But if there's damage, I'll handle it.
28:04OK.
28:05OK.
28:07So right now, National Park Service just got a call in from somebody
28:12right on the other side of this dock for possible property
28:16damage.
28:17It sounds like another vessel came in over awake speed and
28:21possibly snapped one of their dock lines.
28:24So we're going to dock right now and then walk over and find
28:27them.
28:28I don't know if she's here.
28:41So what it looks like is this was a pretty old rope.
28:47So whoever came in over awake speed, either this was kind of
28:52hanging out and they hit it.
28:54Or the wake caused the boat to hit against these buoys up
28:58against the dock.
28:58And it just tore through that nasty old rope.
29:01You're calling has been forwarded to voicemail.
29:08The person you're trying to reach is not available.
29:11Hi.
29:12My name is Aaliyah Lair.
29:13I'm a game warden with the Department of Wildlife.
29:15Oh.
29:16Here you are.
29:18How's it going?
29:19I was in the bathroom.
29:20All right.
29:21You're all good.
29:22Did you see the dock line that was broken?
29:24Yep.
29:25And did they just come through and it like rocked you so hard
29:28that it snapped?
29:29Or what did they do?
29:30I thought it broke the cleat off my back of my boat.
29:32It sounded like it broke the cleat.
29:33So I ran out here.
29:35And I saw the cleat was still there.
29:36And I looked down and saw my rope was snapped right in half.
29:39The boats were going like this.
29:40My sliding glass doors were opening and closing.
29:42My cabinets were opening and closing.
29:43My pocket doors was opening and closing.
29:46Yeah.
29:46And I could barely get up to my feet to walk out
29:49because the boat was going like this so bad.
29:52Mm-hmm.
29:53It's worse than any kind of windstorm out here
29:55when we have all this wake out here.
29:57And people are not paying attention to the no wake.
29:59I know.
30:00I know.
30:00And there's no one out here ever watching this.
30:02I'm seeing two to four of the Ranger boats
30:05sitting right over at the boat launch.
30:06And I'm like, the problem's over here.
30:08We're generally sitting over there
30:10just because that's where a lot of traffic is.
30:11But now that we know that there's more of an issue over here.
30:13Yeah, we're going to be sitting over here.
30:14You're going to have a shootout.
30:16And it's not going to be me.
30:18It's going to be them because they're getting tired of us
30:20calling them out when they're breaking the rules here.
30:22We know who they are.
30:23We're getting pictures of them.
30:25Nothing is being done.
30:27Get the trash.
30:27Get the riffraff out of here.
30:29All we can do is increase our effort
30:31Can you put a sign out there?
30:32Because obviously, they don't know what no wake means.
30:34Maybe you need to put idle through the marina.
30:37Which is an issue because they're
30:38supposed to be taking their boaters' education,
30:40which they would know that when they did that.
30:41So we're cracking down on that, on wake zone.
30:44And then they should know what those buoys mean.
30:46Because if they go through the course,
30:47they're supposed to know what that is.
30:49They need to be getting tickets or something.
30:51But one of the rangers said, instead of using the megaphone,
30:55just start taking pictures.
30:57And just first sending them to you guys.
30:59And I'm like, OK, so now we're going to sit here
31:00and do your job.
31:02And then pretty soon, you're seeing them all rolling in here,
31:04all hot.
31:05And they're all going to want to get in fast.
31:07And this is the bewitching hour.
31:17The rangers aren't usually out here patrolling
31:18unless they get called out.
31:19So now that we know we can start patrolling out here,
31:22we'll do that.
31:22We understand what you're saying.
31:23Yeah, but I'm paying for the damages.
31:25Yeah, I understand.
31:26They're not.
31:27If there is any damage over a certain price point,
31:30we can report that to the Coast Guard.
31:31If it's over $2,000, that's what we can do.
31:34If it's below that, there's a self-report form
31:36we can send to you.
31:37We're not saying there's not an issue.
31:39We'll start addressing it.
31:40We'll start coming over here and watching men.
31:42Yeah, I'm out here at this time.
31:44So you'll see me out here now that I know.
31:47Because before, the problem is we
31:49were getting people telling us on that other side
31:51they were getting into fights because people
31:53were coming through the wake zone.
31:55I'm not going to strain my vocal cords
31:57that they're not going to hear me.
31:58So I got a megaphone.
31:59But they don't hear it.
32:00Yeah.
32:01Or they're hearing it.
32:02They're not honoring it.
32:04They're thinking, you're crushing our party, Karen.
32:09You know, like really, well, look what you're doing to our boats.
32:13Yeah.
32:13And look what you're doing to our ropes.
32:15And what if we have children inside
32:17and they're standing on their feet
32:18and you knock them off their feet?
32:19Yeah.
32:20Yeah.
32:20A little kid.
32:21Yeah.
32:22And we'll let our morning guys know, too,
32:23that they're coming out hot.
32:25And we'll be here for when they're coming in hot, too.
32:28We got our megaphone.
32:29So we're going to be out here.
32:31We'll take care of it.
32:34OK, good.
32:35Yeah.
32:36Yeah.
32:36I hope you use your megaphone.
32:37Oh, yeah.
32:38Don't forget to say please and thank you.
32:39Yeah, exactly.
32:40It goes a long way.
32:41Yeah.
32:42Yeah.
32:42Yeah.
32:43Yeah.
32:43Yeah.
32:44All right.
32:44Have a good one.
32:45Sounds good.
32:47I appreciate it.
32:48Yeah.
32:50So originally stuff was coming in for actual Hemingway Harbor
32:57with all sorts of wake zone violations, people
33:00being aggressive towards each other as far as wake zone
33:04violations go.
33:05So now that we know that this section is being hit hard by
33:09wake zone violations, we can actually focus, have somebody
33:13over at Hemingway Harbor and then somebody over here.
33:21That bird's in good shape.
33:22He's going to be successful.
33:23The other one's just hunkered in here.
33:25It's still got feathers on, or sorry, down on its head.
33:27So I'm putting it closer to probably 36 to 38 days old.
33:34I don't think, you know, famous last words, but I don't think
33:37it'll be able to fly off on us.
33:39OK.
33:44Oh, we've got a rattlesnake in here, western rattlesnake.
33:50Tucked in nicely right under that bush.
33:52Oh, there he goes.
33:54Sees you.
33:55Hey, buddy.
33:56Oh, there's goes a rattle.
33:57There he is.
33:58Yeah.
33:59Try not to get eaten by a fruginus hock.
34:03Pretty sure I see it down on the top of one of their heads.
34:06So it tells me it's a younger bird.
34:09I like it.
34:11I think we end up just processing here.
34:13What do you think?
34:13Probably.
34:19You know, it's interesting.
34:20They're not that young, so there is two.
34:23Well, they're definitely younger than the one that flew away.
34:28Mental note of this, Mariah, there's some cottontail fur
34:32right there.
34:32More cottontails?
34:33Edge of the nest.
34:36Hey, buddy.
34:39I think the second one's even younger.
34:42It takes weeks for their feathers to grow out and to harden.
34:46So right now is a kind of a critical period where you can grab
34:49them when they're pretty well developed but not ready to fly yet.
34:52And there is the feistiness.
34:58Oh, don't, don't, don't, don't do that.
35:01Hey, hey, hey, hey.
35:02Relax.
35:03Relax, buddy.
35:04Hey.
35:05He wants to go and he's got a lot of wind in his wings.
35:07Uh-huh.
35:08Oh.
35:09Hey, buddy.
35:10Hey, buddy.
35:11Relax.
35:12Relax.
35:13Relax.
35:14Relax.
35:15Relax.
35:16Okay.
35:17Relax.
35:18Okay.
35:19Relax.
35:20I think two more males.
35:25Junior's slipping out the back.
35:28Let me know if you need me to move around.
35:29Whoa.
35:30Whoa.
35:31That was interesting.
35:32Did you see him?
35:33Came at me.
35:34Did he just, like, lunge at you?
35:35Um, yeah.
35:36So I would, if Mariah, go over to the back side, the downslope side.
35:37Okay.
35:38I'm going to try for this guy quick.
35:39Three, two, one.
35:51Ah.
35:52That's a good bird.
35:53That's a good bird.
35:54That's a good bird.
35:59That's a good bird.
36:05That's a good bird.
36:06That's a good bird.
36:09We're going to put them in a bag right now.
36:11It's for their own safety, really,
36:12and also just to keep them contained.
36:14That way they're not really tempted to try to run away
36:16or even fly away.
36:19Next.
36:21Glad you brought your hook.
36:23Just almost impossible to reach back there.
36:26Hey, buddy.
36:27Ch-ch-ch-ch-ch.
36:28Come, come.
36:29Come on.
36:33Yeah.
36:35Hey, buddy.
36:36Ah.
36:37Ah.
36:38Ah.
36:39Oof.
36:40Ah.
36:42That was smarted.
36:50Got him.
36:58Relax.
37:01He drew blood, too.
37:04I guess I deserve it.
37:05I guess I deserve it.
37:16Finesse.
37:21Well, yeah, you kind of, it wasn't just a piercing,
37:24so that's actually probably good.
37:25It let some of the bacteria flow out.
37:27I feel like these guys this year are feistier than our previous.
37:34Word's getting around.
37:36I think so.
37:37And the transmitter is on the outer bag.
37:40Probably at least 500 meters.
37:42Oh.
37:43Hey, buddy.
37:44We're going to have to, uh,
37:45We're going to put on you.
37:46Yes.
37:47Hey, friend.
37:48Okay.
37:49Relax.
37:50Relax.
37:51Relax.
37:52Relax.
37:53Relax.
37:55Relax.
38:01Shh.
38:02Gotcha.
38:03Good?
38:04Yep.
38:05Okay.
38:06Do you want to do his feet now or later?
38:07Uh, we'll do them now once I get the hood on.
38:08Yeah, we'll take the measurements.
38:09We can get the lights out, buddy.
38:10They don't like being handled by humans.
38:11I mean, that's not a surprise.
38:12Um, and by putting a hood on, it minimizes the stress on the birds.
38:13It's good that he reminded us to take him seriously.
38:14Okay.
38:15So you got the wing pretty good.
38:16Double wing.
38:17Double legs.
38:18We're going to look good.
38:19Okay.
38:20Okay.
38:21Good.
38:22Good.
38:23Good.
38:24Good.
38:25Good.
38:26Good.
38:27Good.

38:42Good.
38:43We're going to look for some parasites in the blood and we're also going to look for external
38:46parasites and make sure they're healthy.
38:48I don't see any parasites on peregrines either.
38:53J.
38:54Our primary goal is really to get these satellite transmitters on and see how they use the landscape.
38:58So where do they go once they leave their nesting area?
39:02It gives us a lot of information on mortality factors, survival rates, over time,if you want
39:08I just want to get a couple of photos.
39:11There we are, one male, fruginous hawk nestling.
39:15Banded.
39:17How's that?
39:18Good.
39:20Close up of the face?
39:22Mm.
39:23Close up of that.
39:26Good teenage face.
39:26There you are.
39:27OK.
39:28This will be Little Bird.

39:39Here we go.
39:40Here.
39:41You're OK.
39:42OK.
39:43So he can get a transmitter.
39:49There you go, buddy.
39:52Seems like he's trying to get his foot off.
39:55But I don't think he's made much progress yet.
39:59This is looking for blood-borne parasites.
40:03Looking for external parasites.
40:05That's when we do the looking through the feathers.
40:11And then combine that with blood analysis.
40:19OK.
40:20We're ready to return them.
40:29Hey, buddy.
40:39Stay put.
40:46That's a good bird.
40:48Good couple of birds.
40:51Are we friends again?
40:52I don't know if we were ever friends.
40:53Friends to start with?
40:54Yeah, we might never have been friends.
40:56All right.
40:57We'll make a graceful exit here.
41:01So today was a totally successful day.
41:03We banded nestlings at two different nests.
41:05Got two transmitters out, satellite transmitters.
41:07So we'll be collecting data for the next three years.
41:10Excellent.
41:11Got everything?
41:12Yeah, we're good.
41:13Nestlings are back.
41:14We're back.
41:15Ah, that's a good feeling.
41:16Two nests done.

41:18I've got the hoods.
