00:00Without looking at your watch, you know what time it is right now?
00:12Yeah.
00:13No, without looking at your watch.
00:15You held the tag.
00:16What does the tag say on it that you must do?
00:19Did they just come through and it rocked you so hard that it snapped?
00:23Hey, buddy.
00:24Relax.
00:25Relax.
00:26Relax.
00:27The boats were going like this.
00:28My sliding glass doors were opening and closing.
00:31My cabinets were opening and closing.
00:32So I can smell the odor of alcohol?
00:34Yeah.
00:34If this man is operating under the influence, he will be going to jail.
00:40Nevada.
00:41A land of extremes.
00:44From the strip to the summits.
00:47It's wild country.
00:49Home to more than 900 species.
00:52And a way of life worth protecting.
00:54Preserved for the people and the wildlife that call it home.
00:58One team stands guard.
01:02This is Nevada Wild.
01:05My name is James Mortimer.
01:25I'm a game warden with the Nevada Department of Wildlife.
01:28I'm in the western region here in Washoe County.
01:32Within that is Reno and Sparks.
01:35About 400,000 population and above.
01:38I was born and raised here in the Reno area.
01:41It's where I was fishing and hunting for most of my life.
01:44So it's fun to be able to be in areas that I know a lot of those outdoorsmen are recreating.
01:50I'm heading up to Lake Tahoe and we'll be patrolling by boat.
01:54We're going to meet up with game warden Brittany Ryder and look for any reckless operators operating under the influence or any other violations regarding watercraft or vessels.
02:05Brittany Ryder patrols Lake Tahoe specifically.
02:08And then assist any other wardens with patrol during hunting season.
02:22Brittany, how are we now?
02:23Good.
02:25All right.
02:25Well, let's get after it then.
02:27Any big troubles with the paddleboarders at all?
02:30So there's some paddleboarders over at the point.
02:32But the lifeguards see without a life jacket.
02:35And some of them might be kids.
02:36Okay.
02:55He's not even noticing us.
02:56He's just paying attention to his phone.
02:59Hello, State Game Warden.
03:00How you doing?
03:01Hey, the reason I'm coming up is I don't see a life jacket on board.
03:04Oh, okay.
03:05Is that an inflatable life jacket or no?
03:07No.
03:07Okay, so Nevada law says you need to have a life jacket on board.
03:10It doesn't need to be worn, but it needs to be on the board, okay?
03:13You know how far out from the shore you are here?
03:15Yeah.
03:15Probably about a quarter mile, half mile, right?
03:17Yeah.
03:18Do me a favor.
03:18Just come up to my boat for me, okay?
03:20Okay.
03:23Where are you from?
03:24Yeah, Surrana.
03:25Ukraine.
03:26Ukraine?
03:26Yeah.
03:27Okay, you're on work visa or something like that?
03:30Yeah.
03:30I understand coming from Ukraine, you might not know all our laws and violations and everything
03:34like that, so you need to have a life jacket on board, okay?
03:37Life jacket.
03:37So you don't need to wear it, but it needs to be on board, okay?
03:40Uh-huh.
03:42We have a lot of issues out here with people.
03:44They think that they can swim to shore, but when it's in cold water like this, their muscles
03:48start to lock up.
03:49They can't swim as good, and they drown.
03:51It happens more than you think.
03:52Okay.
03:52Now that you're on our boat, do me a favor, throw that on for me.
03:56Thank you, Surrana, sir.
03:57Yeah.
03:59What's your first name?
04:02It's a work visa?
04:03After war started in Ukraine.
04:05Okay.
04:06Me and my son.
04:07Yeah.
04:07Comes to America.
04:08Okay.
04:09Have a work.
04:10Yeah.
04:11It is difficult to learn the laws and regulations when you move from Ukraine.
04:15I'll use it as an educational opportunity and tell them about the laws here in the state
04:19of Nevada.
04:20If you're going to come back, you have to get a life jacket, okay?
04:23Okay.
04:24I understand.
04:24Okay.
04:25Thank you very much.
04:26Best of luck to work and everything like that, huh?
04:28Yeah.
04:29Have a good day.
04:30Yeah, you as well.
04:3123.
04:3123.
04:32Stay game, Morton.
04:50How are we doing?
04:50Good.
04:51The reason for the stop is you don't have an observer on board, okay?
04:54Okay.
04:54So while you're towing any two behind you, you need to have an observer on board, which
04:58means you're operating, paying full attention to what you're doing while driving, and then
05:02you have to have another person on board watching the kids and having a flag ready, okay?
05:07Can you just get the kids on board for me real quick?
05:09Do you have that registration available?
05:17In the house, yeah.
05:19In the house?
05:19Yeah.
05:19I forgot to put this time.
05:21Do you have a driver's license here in Nevada?
05:23Yeah.
05:23How long have you been on the water?
05:25Like 8 in the morning.
05:26Okay.
05:26Without looking at your watch, do you know what time it is right now?
05:28Yeah.
05:29No, without looking at your watch.
05:30Oh, 3 o'clock, sorry.
05:313 o'clock.
05:32I'm not drinking.
05:32I don't drink.
05:33Okay.
05:33Okay, well, the reason why I'm asking is that there's empty beer cans and everything like
05:38that, okay?
05:39So I can smell the odor of alcohol?
05:41Yeah.
05:52My name is Victor Jordan.
05:53I'm a game warden with the Nevada Department of Wildlife, based out of Las Vegas.
05:57I was born here.
05:58I do have a family member who works for the department.
06:01My sister, Brittany, works out of Reno area and patrols out on Lake Tahoe.
06:06I got the job a few years later.
06:09She asked me about it, was very intrigued by it, and says, hey, I think that's something
06:13that I'd like to do.
06:14I said, well, come on, let's go, let's do it.
06:16And she tested for us, and nobody ever knew that she was my sister, and she got the job
06:21on her own.
06:22And when everybody found out that she was my sister, they were all kind of upset with
06:26us that we never told them.
06:28Today, I'm going to be going to a local meat processor.
06:32Basically, we have one professional meat processor in all of Las Vegas.
06:36So anytime anyone in the Las Vegas area harvests an animal and they want it professionally processed,
06:42they bring it to this local processor.
06:44We kind of go over there and make sure that everybody's animals are tagged and punched correctly.
06:48How's it going, guys?
06:55Good.
06:55Good.
06:57Just going to be checking some tags in here.
06:58You got many carcasses in?
07:00Yeah.
07:00We got probably about 20 in yesterday.
07:03Yeah.
07:03And maybe four already today.
07:05Yeah.
07:05And eight on Saturday.
07:07Yeah.
07:07Right on.
07:08Yeah.
07:08Good.
07:09Good.
07:09Cool.
07:09Thanks, man.
07:10So here I'm checking tags to see if it's punched, make sure that the dates kind of correspond.
07:19This guy here harvested on August 21st.
07:23He clearly notched it out.
07:25He wrote in the unit, 222.
07:27And sometimes we'll just look at the carcass and make sure that they brought in a proper
07:31amount of meat for that animal.
07:33If you're only seeing two quarters or a small bag, kind of wonder where the rest of the meat
07:37went.
07:37So here you can see on this tag, he's got an antelope, horns longer.
07:43And what did he do?
07:45He circled the month.
07:46He circled the date.
07:47He circled that it was a male.
07:49So this is a violation.
07:50In the instructions, it says immediately upon reaching the harvested animal, number one,
07:56clearly notched the month and day of kill.
07:59Marking the blocks with a pencil is not acceptable and not as bold.
08:04So he used a pen, pencil here.
08:06It clearly says it right on the tag.
08:08So that's a violation.
08:10Sometimes if they use pen and they do it light, you can just rub the tag a few times with
08:14your thumb and rub off the date.
08:16Hopefully when they get the meat back from the processor, they look at their tag, they
08:20look at it and say, hey, I can rub that off.
08:22I'm going to go harvest another animal.
08:23This guy did it pretty bold, but at some point he didn't follow the laws of the state of Nevada.
08:30We pay him a visit and find out what he was thinking.
08:34Now the whole reason why we check tags, make sure that people are obeying by the law,
08:38your resource would be diminished immediately.
08:40So here's one that we really hate to see.
08:43This is a mule deer that's not punched and I'm not seeing even a slice.
08:48The problem is this is a junior.
08:50So it looks like it was a girl who shot it, I'm sure with her dad and she didn't punch it.
08:56So whoever's taking her and teaching her how to hunt is not teaching her the proper method.
09:02So we always hate to deal with crimes with minors, but they need to be shown the right way.
09:08And we want to keep the next generation continuing to hunt.
09:12And when you have a minor who committed a crime, sometimes it's not fun to deal with that.
09:17I just got to take some notes real quick and find out who they are and go pay him a visit.
09:27So I can smell the odor of alcohol.
09:29Yeah.
09:29I don't know if it's coming from the empty cans or not.
09:32Okay.
09:32Would you be willing to submit to testing?
09:35Yeah.
09:35Okay.
09:36If you can keep your life jacket on board and then just come up to the front of my boat right here.
09:40I can smell the odor of alcohol coming from the vessel and possibly the operator.
09:46This could be very dangerous.
09:48He's got three children on board with no operator.
09:50And it could be very easy that one of these kids go overboard and he's not attentive enough to know that they've fallen overboard.
09:56So when's the last time you had a drink?
09:57I have maybe a couple sips for one beer like in the morning.
10:02Okay.
10:03So like I said, I can smell the odor of alcohol coming out of the boat.
10:07If it's just the empty beer cans that's messing me up, I'll be able to just tell with this one test.
10:12It's just a horizontal gaze nystagmus.
10:15So follow the stimulus, which is the tip of my finger with your eyes and your eyes only.
10:18Keep your head still, okay?
10:19Okay.
10:19Okay.
10:19Okay.
10:19Okay.
10:19Okay.
10:19Okay.
10:19Okay.
10:20Okay.
10:20Okay.
10:21Okay.
10:21Okay.
10:22Okay.
10:23Okay.
10:24Okay.
10:25Okay.
10:26Okay.
10:27So this isn't something that we can use officer discretion.
10:31If this man is operating under the influence and is above the legal limit, there is no discretion
10:36here.
10:37He will be going to jail today.
10:38All right, just keep following the stimulus with your eyes, okay?
10:50All right, you can relax, man.
11:03If you had alcohol above the legal limit, usually what your eyes are going to do is going to
11:10bounce, okay?
11:11Yeah.
11:12I'm not seeing anything like that in your eyes today.
11:13I'm not going to continue forward with the operating under the influence investigation.
11:16You're all good to go.
11:17What I am going to do, I am going to issue you a citation today for not having an operator
11:22on board while you're towing the vessel, okay?
11:24All right.
11:25All right.
11:26So if you jump back in a second.
11:27So if you jump back on the vessel, you're good to go.
11:28I'll be issuing him a citation for operating without an observer.
11:33The fine does carry $195.
11:35And it is a misdemeanor violation here in the state of Nevada.
11:38I do need a signature from you.
11:40It's not a mission of guilt, just saying that you'll take care of it.
11:42I do have to warn you failed to take care of it.
11:44We'll go to Warren.
11:45All right?
11:46You have any questions for us?
11:47Okay.
11:48Thank you for staying sober and making sure everybody can operate out here. Okay. Enjoy your summer. I'll see you later
11:59I'm glad he's operating safe and he's out here
12:01But he just needs to make sure he's got some sort of observer behind him. Hopefully he's learned his lesson. Yeah
12:13So just leaving the meat processor and found a tag not properly punched
12:18So we're gonna go over and investigate find out his story and determine whether it needs to be a citation
12:40Hey, how are you?
12:42Available. That's you. Hey, I'm Victor Jordan game warden Nevada Department of Wildlife. No, I'm good
12:48Right here. Yeah, so
12:50Uh, here to ask you a few questions about your hunt. Okay, so, uh, how did it go?
12:54Went good. Went good.
12:56Area 25. It was successful first thing Saturday morning.
12:59We heard about the heat. Got to the side-by-side put the tag on it took it all the way back to camp got in the shade and
13:05Got it quartered it. Reason why I'm here is because I've looked at your history. You've been hunting for a while
13:10Okay, and uh, you're expected to know what to do with the tag, right?
13:14Supposed to punch the tag. Well, I did I I squared out 22. I wrote in 251. Yeah, and I wrote august
13:20Did you read what the tag said? No, it's right on the tag about notching it clearly notch it
13:26And not with a knife? Yeah, and it says dude
13:29See even my buddy who he's the 101 of me
13:31It was we he even said it when I squirt it out with a pen
13:35Yeah, that if you didn't have a pin in there then you were supposed to notch it
13:38But I don't square it doesn't say that it says to clearly notch it and it says do not use a pen and it's bolded do not
13:44Okay, so that's why I'm here. Okay. Okay
13:47So it looks like you did everything else, right? Okay, and the reason why we have an issue with that is because
13:52You took it to malls you get it processed you get all your meat back you get your tag
13:57You wipe off the ink and you're back up in and hunting again for for another antelope
14:03Understand that yeah, it's it's an education, but also unfortunately it comes with the citation
14:07So all right, do you have your ID on you?
14:09Yep, and you're ready. Okay, thanks
14:11The tag does specifically state that you shall not use ink or pencil and clearly he has
14:17So it is a violation. He will be receiving a citation today. This is your ID bag
14:22Okay, total bail amount 195 additionally to the fine. There's a six to merit. Do you know about the demerit system?
14:28No, sir
14:28If you get 12 within five years you could have your hunting and fishing privileges revoked. Okay, you're at six
14:35Okay, for that. Yep. Yep. That's great
14:38So until you give me those examples. I never even thought about any of that. Yeah
14:43And most sportsmen don't but it's the ones that do think about those kind of things and do do those things that ruin it
14:51For everybody else and that therefore we have to put those laws in place
14:54What I need from you is a signature on the bottom. It's just saying that you will take care of it
14:59All right, thanks
15:02So although this individual was a bit agitated I feel that just a simple education is not enough and a citation would be a little more prudent
15:13I
15:26My name is alia lair i'm a game warden for the department of wildlife in the state of nevada and i patrol southern nevada
15:33Which encompasses a lot of clark county so it's super busy on lake me today really nice weather
15:40It's about 90 degrees lots of jet skis out today, so i'm gonna patrol the lake make sure they're behaving
15:47Today i'm specifically looking out for jet skis so making sure they have their equipment life jacket is most important thing
15:54And then fire extinguisher as well
15:56But also making sure that they're obeying the wake zones because that's a huge problem with how many people are here
16:10Are you able to step on that side and flip it?
16:25So on the back it tells you which side you can step on to flip it this way there was a
16:38Bit of a language barrier that I noticed so i'm communicating with them. Hey look at that sticker
16:43There's a proper side that you can spin it on use your feet
16:47So i'm on my way to a junior hunter
17:07Basically a miner who uh failed to punch her tag being a miner
17:12It is a misdemeanor crime so having to have a misdemeanor on your record having to go to juvenile court having to take your parents with you to court
17:25All that comes into play whether a citation would be warranted or
17:30simply a warning and an explanation of what the law actually requires them to do
17:36Just providing that education
17:42State police
17:48Hi, how are you? Is that here? She here?
17:53Because I have some questions for her. How about is he here?
17:57He's at work? Okay.
17:59She's right here? Okay. All right. Hi, how are you?
18:03Good. I have some questions for you. I'm state game warden for Nevada
18:07And I saw that you harvested an animal and I just wanted to ask you about your hunt
18:09Um, well, we got a deer
18:14Okay, how did that go? So where did you get your deer? When was it?
18:19Well, we got it on the 22nd this month
18:23Okay
18:24And I saw it with some other deer
18:28Uh-huh
18:28Kind of off the winter road and shout it to Naveau
18:32Okay
18:33And then we dropped it off of the butchers after we gutted it
18:38Okay
18:39All right. So there are some issues, but you're not in trouble
18:42But this is an education and then this is going to be an education for dad
18:45I'd really like to talk to him. Is he the one who took you or did? Is this mom?
18:49Yeah
18:50Who's the one who's out with you out in the field?
18:53Okay, and then you uh, you dropped it off at the meat processor?
18:57Yeah
18:58So who carried your tag when you were hunting?
19:01So how come your dad was carrying it and not you?
19:06Oh, is that dad?
19:08Perfect. All right
19:17Yes, sir. When you shot the deer did the deer take off running?
19:22Yeah, he didn't go
19:24You can chime in anytime dad anytime
19:26I'm trying to understand what I mean, I think the tag thing was
19:31Wrong maybe I I get I as far as I I can see I'm I'm you don't and I was just trying to be responsible
19:37Fair enough
19:38And so it didn't get lost so I mean again
19:41Fair enough. So this is
19:41We notched it. We we did everything we were supposed to do. Yeah
19:45So what did we do wrong?
19:47So
19:47Stopping by so you want to talk to us or before I sit there and say hey
19:52You know take us to jail
19:53I'd like to find out what I'm being charged with or why I'm looking
19:59You held the tag. What does the tag say on it that you must do?
20:03Once you arrive to the animal, what does the tag say that you must do?
20:08Correct and right in the area that it was shot. How do I know that that deer was shot
20:12in its correct location? What day was it shot on? She told me on the 22nd
20:17Okay, how would how would I know that looking at the tag?
20:20Um, because I said oh, you know what? Yes
20:24Right? We're tracking now?
20:26Let me let me okay now. I got you. Let me step back then and I'll explain all that to you.
20:32Yeah, sure
20:33So we actually pulled off the wrong tag. The tag that we pulled off and notched
20:39Um was we're going hunting in another three weeks. For an antelope?
20:44Yeah, yeah, yeah, I notched the wrong tag. Okay, so so so yes
20:52Wherever I have the other tag in the house, but you can see the other tags already notched out. Okay
20:57I just I just grabbed the wrong tag. Okay
21:00Because I know that's one thing absolutely
21:04You have to have the tag over there. Right
21:06Actually, I was going to call you guys up and ask you because I mean the
21:10Tat- the card is the tag I have now. Yeah
21:13He's notched out. So I need to find out what to do to do with that tag. Okay
21:17Well to be honest with you, I do not know. I'll get you an answer by the end of the day
21:21If I don't get an answer and I'm still waiting
21:24I'll call you by the end of the day and tell you that I don't have an answer yet
21:28Okay. All right. All right. Thank you so much guys. Have a nice day. All right, you too. Thanks
21:34So after leaving these two individuals
21:37determined to provide an education for a minor and a site for the individual
21:43Providing education letting people understand why it's important to punch your tag and let them know that we're out here and we're watching
21:51So it's super busy on Lake me today lots of jet skis out today
22:04So I'm gonna patrol the lake make sure they're behaving
22:07Are you able to step on that side and flip it?
22:18There was a bit of a language barrier that I noticed so I'm communicating with them. Hey look at that sticker
22:25There's a proper side that you can spin it on use your feet
22:28There we go there we go
22:37There we go
22:58I always gotta say
23:00So we got a little bit of smoke which sometimes after a flip
23:30Can happen
23:31So it looks like the jet ski is good
23:33They're they're taking it slow because they're nervous to flip again
23:37Both of them had on life jackets
23:39Which is a huge thing because a lot of people even with life jackets will panic because it's a shock of cold
23:45Even though it's 80 degrees in the water
23:47It's way colder than what it is outside
23:49And also you hit the water pretty hard when you come off the jet ski
23:52So if they weren't wearing their life jackets that would have turned into a rescue instead of an actual vessel assist
23:58So that's one of the reasons why we preach having safety equipment with you and on you at all times and make sure that it's actually functional
24:06I'll be clear of that vessel assist oceanora
24:09To me
24:32My name is joe barnes i'm the staff specialist statewide specialist for the wildlife diversity division
24:38Which just means I juggle a lot of grants
24:40But on a personal level my specialty has always been
24:44For the past 17 so year or so years i've been able to focus on birds of prey
24:50Peregrine falcons golden eagles a lot of cliff nesting raptors
24:53Hey hey how long you been here
25:00Oh that's not too bad
25:03Mariah is another wildlife biologist with the department so we're going to command some raptors
25:07Specifically a little known uh hawk species is a fruginus hawk
25:12She's coming out today to help me um kind of keep the nestlings in check corral them restrain them once we get them in the end
25:18We'll go up check a couple sites and then get an age hopefully there are some nestlings doing the blood and getting transmitters
25:27We're going to try to track their movements and try to see how they use the landscape and what particular factors of the environment are most critical for the species
25:35Okay cool all right
25:39These are uh solar powered satellite transmitters so you know once you get these transmitters out
25:44It's a lot of hands-on work just to make it happen but once they're out i can sit there and download from my desk
25:50I never once need to see or touch that bird again for the rest of its life
25:55I just need to download data so the data i get is gps point every hour um i also get things like temperature
26:02I get velocity yeah you know see if the birds stopped in place or if it's moving and also
26:09um elevation so i get usually um meters above sea level and um so that way i can tell is the bird
26:17using thermals getting up in the air is it perched is it on a tree is it on a ridge line things like
26:22that hey joe do you see the adult up in the sky to your left oh no i did not see that oh yeah
26:32there's a nest really small tree but it's literally you know 150 yards out from the road
26:40so my plan is to possibly put on a transmitter on at least one of the testlings
26:48so we only have the three transmitters maybe just put one here that's what i'm kind of thinking
26:52if we put one here and then we for sure had nestlings at the next site so one here one there
27:00gear gear up
27:01we've got capillary tubes yeah needles i think we got everything
27:10yeah if they if they start running joe just drop the ladder yeah i'll get it all right here we go
27:19this guy might be solo okay uh oh we're not getting that bird no
27:25oh that is its fledging flight i would say
27:33how's it going
27:36not too bad gonna fill up sweet thank you
27:42hey what's up i guess somebody came in over flat wake speed which at this point there's nothing we
27:53can do we have to witness it apparently no one of her lines on her dock break yeah i'll i'll head over
28:01with you if it's just that line there's not much that we can do but um if there's if there's damage i'll
28:08i'll handle it okay so right now national park service just got a call in um from somebody right
28:18on the other side of this dock um for possible property damage it sounds like another vessel came
28:25in over awake speed and possibly snapped one of their dock lines so we're gonna dock right now and then
28:32walk over and find them i don't know if she's here
28:46so what it looks like is this was a pretty old rope so whoever came in over awake speed uh either this
28:56was kind of hanging out and they hit it or the wake caused the boat to hit uh against these buoys up
29:03against the dock and it just tore through that nasty old rope
29:11your call has been forwarded to voicemail the person you're trying to reach is not available
29:16hi my name is alia lair i'm a game warden with the department of wildlife oh
29:21here you are how's it going i was in the bathroom you're all good was this the the dock line that
29:28was broken yep and did they just come through and it like rocked you so hard that it snapped or what
29:34did they do i thought it broke the cleat off my back of my boat it sounded like it broke the cleat
29:38so i ran out here and i saw the cleat was still there and i looked down saw my rope was snapped right
29:43in half the boats were going like this my sliding glass doors were opening and closing my cabinets were
29:47opening and closing my pocket doors was opening and closing yeah and i could barely get up to my
29:53feet to walk out because the boat was going like this so bad it's worse than any kind of windstorm
29:59out here when we have all this wake out here and people are not paying attention to the no way i know
30:04i know and there's no one out here ever watching this i'm seeing two to four of the ranger boats
30:10sitting right over at the boat launch and i'm like the problem's over here we're generally sitting over
30:14there um just because that's where a lot of traffic is but now that we know that there's more of an
30:17issue over here yeah we're gonna be sitting over here over here you're gonna have a shootout and it's
30:21not gonna be me it's gonna be them because they're getting tired of us calling them out when they're
30:26breaking the rules here we know who they are we're getting pictures of them nothing is being done
30:31get the trash get the riffraff out of here all we can do is increase our effort can you put a sign out
30:36there because obviously they don't know what no wake means maybe you need to put idle through the marina
30:42which is an issue because they're supposed to be taking their boaters education yeah so we're
30:47we're cracking down on that on wake zone and then they should know what those buoys mean
30:51because if they go through the course they're supposed to know what that is they need to be
30:54getting tickets or something but um one of the rangers said um instead of using the megaphone to
31:00start taking pictures and just start sending them to you guys and i'm like okay so now we're going to
31:05sit here and do your job and then pretty soon you're seeing them all rolling in here all hot
31:10and they're all going to want to get in fast and this is this is the bewitching hour
31:21the rangers aren't usually out here patrolling unless they get called out so now that we know
31:25we can start patrolling out here we'll do that we understand yeah but i'm paying for the damages
31:30all right yeah i understand if they're not damage if there is any damage over a certain price point
31:34um we can report that to the coast guard if it's over two thousand dollars
31:37um that's what we can do if it's below that there's a self-report form we can send to you
31:42we're not saying there's not an issue we'll start addressing it we'll start coming over here
31:48i'm i'm out here at this time so you'll see me out here now that i know because before the problem
31:53is we were getting people telling us on that other side they were getting into fights because people
31:58were coming through the wake zone i'm not going to strain my vocal cords that they're not going to hear me
32:03so i got a megaphone but they don't hear it yeah all right they're hearing it they're they're not
32:08honoring it and they're thinking you're crushing our party yeah karen you know like really well look
32:16what you're doing to our boats yeah and look what you're doing to our ropes and what if we have
32:21children inside and they're standing on their feet and you knock them off their feet yeah yeah a little
32:25kid yeah and we'll let our morning guys know too that they're they're coming out hot and we'll be here for
32:31when they're coming in hot too we got our megaphone so we're we're gonna be out here we'll we'll take
32:37care of it okay good yeah yeah i hope you use your megaphone oh yeah don't forget to say please
32:43yeah exactly it goes a long way yeah thank you yeah yeah yep yep all right have a good one
32:51sounds good i appreciate it yeah so originally stuff was coming in for actual heminois harbor
33:01with all sorts of wake zone violations people being aggressive towards each other as far as
33:09wake zone violations go so now that we know that this section is being hit hard by wake zone violations
33:15we can actually focus have somebody over at hemmonway harbor and then somebody over here
33:20that bird's in good shape he's gonna be successful the other one's just hunkered in here it's still got
33:30feathers on or sorry down on its head so i'm putting it closer to probably 36 to 38 days old i don't think
33:39you know famous last words but i don't think it'll be able to fly off on us okay
33:48oh we've got a rattlesnake in here western rattlesnake
33:55tucked in nicely right under that there he goes sees you hey buddy oh there's goes a rattle there he is
34:03yeah try not to get eaten by a fruginous hawk
34:08pretty sure i see it down on the top of one of their heads so
34:12tells me it's a younger bird i like it
34:15i think we end up just processing here what do you think probably
34:24you know it's interesting they're not that young so there is two
34:26well they're definitely younger than the one that flew away
34:33mental note of this mariah um there's some cottontail fur right there more cottontails edge of the nest
34:41hey buddy
34:44uh i think the second one's even younger it takes weeks for their feathers to grow out and to harden
34:51so right now is a kind of a critical period where you can grab them when they're pretty well developed
34:56but not ready to fly yet and there is the feistiness
35:03oh don't don't don't don't do that hey hey hey hey relax relax buddy hey he wants to go and he's got
35:10a lot of wind in his wings uh-huh oh
35:15hey buddy hey buddy relax relax relax relax okay
35:29relax i think two more males
35:31junior's slipping out the back okay let me know if you need me to move around
35:46whoa whoa that was interesting did you see him did he just like lunge at you um yeah so i would if mariah
35:53go over to the back side the down slope side okay i'm gonna try for this guy quick three two one
36:10that's a good bird that's a good bird
36:12we're gonna put him in a bag right now it's for their own safety really and also just to keep
36:18them contained that way they're not really tempted to try to run away or or even fly away next
36:25glad you brought your hook um just almost impossible to reach back there hey buddy
36:31come come on come on yeah hey buddy
36:47that smarted
36:55got him
37:01relax relax
37:06he drew blood too i guess i deserve it
37:21the nest
37:26well yeah you kind of it wasn't just a piercing so that's actually probably did it
37:31let some of the bacteria flow out
37:35i feel like these guys this year are feistier than
37:39our previous
37:41word's getting around i think so and the transmitter in the is on the outer bag
37:47probably at least 500 meters oh hey buddy uh we're gonna have to uh
37:51put a good on you yes hey frank okay relax relax
38:08let's see if we can get the hood on we'll do them now once i get the hood on yeah we'll take the measurements
38:25there we go we can go lights out buddy they don't like being handled by humans i mean that's not a surprise
38:35and by putting a hood on it minimizes the stress on the birds it's good that he reminded us to take
38:41him seriously okay okay so you got the wing pretty good
38:45the wing about the legs we're gonna look for some parasites in the blood we're also gonna look for
38:50external parasites to make sure they're healthy i don't see really any parasites on peregrines either
38:58our primary goal is really to get these satellite transmitters on see how they use the landscape
39:03so where do they go once they leave their their nesting area it gives us a lot of information
39:08on mortality factors survival rates over time if you want to get a couple photos
39:15there we are one male virginis hawk nestling banded how's that good close half of the face
39:30good teenage face there you are okay this will be a little bird okay
39:34uh 24
39:43hey buddy here you go here you're okay okay so he can get a transmitter
39:54there you go buddy seems like he's trying to get his foot off but i don't think he's made much progress yet
40:04this is looking for blood-worn parasites looking for external parasites that's when we do the
40:11looking through the feathers
40:16and then combine that with a blood analysis
40:24okay we're ready to return them
40:34hey buddy stay put
40:51that's a good bird a good couple of birds
40:56are you friends again i don't know if we are friends to start with yeah we might never have been
41:00friends all right we'll make a graceful exit here
41:06so today was a totally successful day we banded nestlings at two different nests i got two
41:11transmitters out satellite transmitters so we'll be collecting data for the next three years
41:15excellent got everything nestlings are back back oh that's a good feeling two nests done and you've got the hoods
41:24you
