Doctor warns vs unhealthy food

A gastroenterologist reminds Filipino families to choose healthier foods for their New Year’s Eve feast. In an exclusive interview with The Manila Times, Dr. Paolo Demapelis warned Filipinos of the harms of overeating, stressing that this could lead to long-term conditions like stroke and heart attack. He said that salty foods, which are common during the holidays, increase the risk of stroke. Demapelis implored Filipinos to eat and drink in moderation and to have regular health check-ups. On December 31, the Department of Health (DOH) reported a 5 percent increase in stroke, heart attack, and asthma this holiday season compared to last year.

00:00The most dangerous ones are stroke and heart attack.
00:03Kaya pagdating ng late December to January,
00:06there is an increased number ng mga stroke and heart attack patients
00:09that we see in the hospital, especially early in the morning.
00:14Dumadami talaga sila.
00:16Ito ay dahil din sa dumadami ng pinakain nilang
00:19mga matataba, mamantika, maalat.
00:22Kasi kapag yung mga maaalat na food,
00:24ipapataas yun ng blood pressure.
00:26Pag-usyadong maalat, nagpapalala na hypertension,
00:29tataas yung blood pressure.
00:30It can also increase the risk for stroke and heart attack.
00:33So, itong dalawang ito, yung dalawa pang wina-watch out for natin
00:38na long-term effect ng kapag unhealthy ang ating holiday eating.
00:45Ano po kayo, reminders natin to our Filipino families,
00:49especially now that pag may medyo noche na po ulit, di ba?
00:52So, itong mga dishes na kailangang iwasan yung mga 4Ms nga po, no?
00:57They're very typical po sa mga dishes natin na hinahanda.
01:02So, ano po kayo yung mga alternatives that we can provide?
01:06Okay.
01:06So, when it comes to eating,
01:08there are two things that you should always remember.
01:12Number one is to eat and drink in moderation.
01:16For example, hindi naman bawal kumain ng mga mamantika,
01:20matataba, matamis, maalat.
01:22Pero in moderation, huwag naman sobra.
01:25For example, nakatikim ka na at nakaitin.
01:30Dalawang subo ng lechon, huwag naman like isang buong plato,
01:33isang buong lehadol ng lechon, di ba?
01:36So, I'm always in moderation.
01:38Yun yung una.
01:38And pangalawa, I still have a balanced meal.
01:41So, for example, if we are eating a lot of fatty, oily foods,
01:46it would be better.
01:48Nakakain din tayo ng mga gulay.
01:51Gulay din.
01:52Have a healthy balanced meal.
01:54So, yun yung unang reminder.
01:56Second reminder sa ating mga kababayan is,
02:01of course, always have yourself checked.
02:04Sabihin, at the slightest na may maramdaman ka,
02:08mahilo, magka chest pain,
02:11or parang something,
02:13punta ka agad sa doktor.
02:14And the last one is, of course, may nararamdaman man o wala,
02:18lalo na ka pa nagkakaedad.
02:19If you're past 40 years old,
02:21misa nga 30, ahin pa lang eh.
02:23Alam mo yun, maganda ay nagpapageneral.
02:25Check up tayo.
02:44Mga kababayan.
02:52So, yun yung unang.
02:53Pagabayan.
02:54Pagabayan.
02:54Pagabayan.
02:54Pagabayan.
02:55Pagabayan.
