00:00Lots of, lots of live news going on. I think the headliner is Brooks Koepka's decision. And we'd heard sort of rumors that this was going to happen. Rumblings, things of that nature. Some of which I love to kind of hear, you know, when you look back on what you'd heard, when you kind of felt like, oh, this is actually going to be happening.
00:20But there were, there were reports Josh Carpenter of Sports Business Journal had many of them. There were conversations with Scott O'Neill where, you know, the, the, the, the way it was phrased, like he's under contract for 2026. We have no reports to the contrary, but then the statement goes out. Some of it, really much of it is understandable given his family situation when he'd be closer to home.
00:43Obviously, you know, unfortunately his wife, Jenna miscarried earlier this year. That was, that was part of the whole reporting story around this. Wants to be spending more time at home with, with her and their son, completely understandable in that sense.
00:55But it is a huge, huge blow dealt to live golf, to lose a guy that's, you know, won five majors, one of the most recognizable faces of the league and, and, you know, a franchise captain and co-owner.
01:07So before we kind of dig into some additional posts from others on that league, when this, when this news crosses the wire, what's your initial reaction to the fact that Brooks is not going to play on this league?
01:18I wasn't surprised because the rumblings had been for a very long time that Brooks Koepka was unhappy at the live golf tour. I think you saw it play out for many years, right?
01:28Whether it was players that were on his team that didn't necessarily vibe with the way Brooks Koepka did, did it his way. I mean, Brooks has always done it his way.
01:38When you think about Brooks Koepka, you think about this tiger like player who was intimidating, a guy that never really made friends with too many people.
01:48Now, if you got in the circle, of course, he would give you the time of day. But when you're at the golf course or you're playing golf with Brooks Koepka, it was very much businesslike at all times.
02:00And he was there to, to win, dominate. And that was his expectation. He had the physique of, of, of a tiger like dude looks like a linebacker.
02:09Um, so when we think about just Brooks and what he's been able to accomplish in this game and him making the move to live and all the things that he had said prior to the live golf season, well, somebody's going to take the money.
02:22Well, he eventually did take the money and he legitimized, legitimize this league. And so over the last, however many years, you know, you heard these rumblings about Brooks Koepka, uh, that he was unhappy.
02:33And I think many fans, players, uh, media had been trying to figure out if this is true or not, because, you know, you also get the other side of the story of, of whether it's the live fans or live, uh, media, or just maybe the executive side of live of these people that are trying to convince themselves that Brooks is happy.
02:55Oh, he's, he's doing great over here. Uh, he's never been happier in his, in his time as a professional golfer.
03:01And so then you, you see that and you're like, well, is that true? Maybe it is. I don't know. Um, only person that really did know was, was, was obviously Brooks and the people around him, uh, were guys that were on his team.
03:14And when you look back and, and you think about why did Brooks go? Well, I think you can kind of play back just some highlights from that Netflix season where Brooks was featured.
03:24And that he was injured, wasn't playing as well. Didn't know how long of a time that he was going to have. Obviously he's being offered a large sum of money and maybe he's thinking, all right, maybe I can just go take this money, come back.
03:40I can also get my brother paid. He also has a place to play. So anybody that has a, as a brother, you could understand. It's like, man, I, I can take care of my bro and all this and get paid and potentially be able to play the things I care about the most, which is the majors.
03:57If, if you remember Brooks kept going the PGA tour, right before he left, he really didn't play well in PGA tour events because he just didn't seem to care. And so you wondered, you know, what was going to happen when he went to live or events that, that really didn't matter where we, that in his mind didn't matter.
04:19So I think that's been playing out over the last very many years. Then you throw in the personalities that he's, that he's had on his team as being a captain and trying to be a leader and the stories that have come, come out and about with like Matthew Wolf being on his team and them going back and forth.
04:36But my initial, okay. So back to the original question, what was your reaction? Not surprised at this point. I think it's played itself out. And then you go look at, you know, his potential as far as getting back to the PGA tour and think about, all right, well, he did win a PGA championship in 2023, five-year exemptions, 2026 next year.
04:59If he sit out next year, it's like, all right, 27, potentially he might have a year where he has status from that major championship, depending on how the PGA tour wants to rule it. So I think he saw it as an opportunity to sit out this year and clearly both sides were able to negotiate to where he's out. And it's finally the, I think PGA tour are going to win in all of this.
