00:00Evangeline Gardner has lived with disordered eating for much of her life.
00:07Something she's working hard to overcome.
00:10But recently she's experienced setbacks after being inundated with advertising for weight loss treatments.
00:16It is not the people going on them that I have an issue with.
00:19It is the people who are marketing them.
00:21It is the people who are selling them and making money off of people hating their bodies.
00:25Eating disorder experts say these adverts can be triggering.
00:29International company Juniper is among their concerns.
00:32I certainly do think that there needs to be more rigour around the advertising of these medications.
00:39So we need the federal government to become involved and that's my view.
00:42The ABC has seen comments on Juniper's Facebook page.
00:46Including one where a user was told the company will DM citing pesky Aussie laws.
00:51In a statement Juniper says the comment does not reflect the company's view or approach to regulations.
00:58It also says any sales held by the company does not influence a clinician's decision to prescribe.
01:05And that would include its most recent Black Friday sale.
01:08You would never see something like, I don't know, a pap smear being, you know, a Black Friday sale for a pap smear.
01:14Or some other cancer screening or a skin check, you know.
01:17The Therapeutic Goods Administration won't say if the company has broken any advertising rules.
01:23But the Australian and New Zealand Academy for Eating Disorders says it will push for reforms on telehealth weight loss prescriptions.
01:31We really think it should include at least a baseline assessment of a GP in person.
01:36But for a single-person.
01:40I really think it's a great decision because it's not right now.
