00:00Woo-hoo!
00:03The Hammonds are here!
00:05Travel is in my blood.
00:07Let's go.
00:08This is the best.
00:09For years I worked as a tour rep,
00:11following in the footsteps of my dear lovely mob,
00:14a hard-working, no-nonsense travel agent.
00:17Thanks to our money-saving tips,
00:19we managed to budget our way to a place that totally captured our hearts.
00:23Look at this! Look at this!
00:25Florida.
00:26I love it!
00:27I was born for Little Havana.
00:30And now the Sunshine State is a big draw for me.
00:33Sorry, I'm still on your foot.
00:35And my son, Aidan.
00:37Good job, y'all.
00:38You see him, mate?
00:39Yeah.
00:41But with holiday prices rising...
00:43Oh, my goodness. I'm in heaven.
00:46Can you do Florida...
00:48without breaking the bank?
00:50$4.99 for these.
00:52Oh, yes, Aidan!
00:54Help your mum.
00:56Otherwise, just get out.
00:58It's the best day of my life.
01:09Right, after this red car, son.
01:11After this red car, I'm all over this.
01:14I'm all over...
01:15Oh, move your head.
01:17It's quite literally the end of the road for me and Aidan
01:22on our budget-savvy Florida foray.
01:25The best road trip you've ever been on, innit?
01:27Be honest.
01:28Taking the journey.
01:29Oh, that's not the destination.
01:31We've enjoyed it, haven't we?
01:32We really have.
01:34US Route 1 has taken us as far south as it possibly can
01:39for one last adventure.
01:43We're heading to Key West, babes.
01:47One of the most popular spots in the Sunshine State.
01:51We've made it, mum.
01:52On the tip of Florida.
01:53Key West.
01:54I know.
01:55Isn't it lovely?
01:56Yeah.
01:57They say people, when they come here, they can be anything they want
02:00and they're one of the most happiest people in the whole of Florida
02:03when they come here.
02:04Really?
02:05Yeah.
02:06That's a pretty big reputation to hold.
02:07Yeah, it's true.
02:08Apparently, when they come here, they never want to leave.
02:10They want to stay.
02:11I want to find out why.
02:12Let's find out what makes them so happy.
02:14Really?
02:16Famed for its year-round raise, lively nightlife and friendly chickens
02:21that free range around the place, I'm told this tropical paradise
02:25can be pretty pricey.
02:29But fear not, us Hammonds are going to unlock some thrifty ways
02:33to do Key West without blowing a hole the size of Cuba
02:37in our bank account.
02:39Which is just over there, incidentally.
02:41My first thrifty tip, dump the hire car.
02:47They cost a fortune, don't they?
02:49And with the island being so bijou, just four miles long,
02:53you're much better finding alternative ways to get around.
02:56Oh, there it is.
02:58Yeah.
03:00Let's get trollied, bubs.
03:02Hello, everybody.
03:04Good morning.
03:05We've come on board to meet a man in the know, Clinton,
03:08who's going to give us a little insider knowledge
03:11to get our Key West party started.
03:14Clinton, I'm loving this bus ride already.
03:16What is it about Key West that is so incredible?
03:18The weather, the smell of the ocean, you're seeing the ocean,
03:21there's like a really great connectivity to it.
03:23It's such a terrific community as well.
03:26Very welcoming.
03:27You kind of put all of those pieces together.
03:29And I can understand why people always want to come back.
03:33I don't ever really want to leave.
03:34So, you know, so I get it.
03:36Key West is famous for a giant native sea snail called a conch.
03:43Well, I say conch, but Key Westerners, they say conch.
03:47If you're born and bred here, you can call yourself a conch too.
03:51And if you've lived here for seven years or more,
03:54you're a freshwater conch.
03:56So this island is conchers and Clinton is a conch OG
04:01because he's mastered the art of putting the honk into the conch.
04:05Of course, the snail grows the shell.
04:08We eat the snail in conch fritters, conch chowder, conch salad.
04:12But what are you going to do with the shell afterwards now?
04:15We make horns out of them.
04:16No.
04:17And so, yeah, so this is actually a horn.
04:19And if you ever played any kind of brass instrument in any band,
04:25you can already play a conch corn.
04:27You ready?
04:28Yeah, I'm ready.
04:29OK, all right, watch your ears.
04:30Just a little.
04:31Go on.
04:34It's like a ship.
04:35Yeah, take a breath.
04:36You're so good at that.
04:37I've been doing it a very long time.
04:39We all learn as little kids how to play the conch corn.
04:42Everything here is very conch-centric.
04:45You're telling me.
04:47And now someone else wants to get in on the conch craze.
04:52Can I have a go?
04:53I want to have a little go.
04:54Absolutely.
04:55That one is for you.
04:56This one's for me.
05:00It's so good.
05:01He's got it now.
05:04First time, right?
05:05Absolutely.
05:07I can see Aidan's come out of his shell.
05:11The Hammonds are here.
05:13So that is my gift to y'all.
05:15You can take that home.
05:16Oh, my God.
05:17Don't give him that gift.
05:19I wouldn't have no peace and quiet when I come out.
05:22Oh, my God.
05:23Put it inside your carry-on luggage.
05:24It's the worst present ever.
05:29Clinton's suddenly going down in my estimation.
05:33But he could turn it around with some top local tips.
05:37So we're here all day.
05:38What would you recommend we do?
05:40Everyone that comes here, you want to get on the water.
05:42Go to some of the great restaurants.
05:44Try key lime pie.
05:45Oh, yes.
05:46I've got to try that.
05:47From sun up to sun down, there is something for everybody.
05:51I love it.
05:53Hold up.
05:54Did he just say pie?
05:55Oh, my.
05:57Sounds like we've got a fun day ahead of us.
06:00But first, I'm going to ride this trolley for all it's worth.
06:03I'm well on board with this, babes.
06:07It's like a little toy town, isn't it?
06:09It's so cute.
06:11Key West, here we go.
06:12Here we go.
06:14It's 50 bucks for one day's unlimited travel.
06:18But that also gets you two guided walking tours and entry to a local museum.
06:23And to top it off, they give you a book of coupons for local restaurants.
06:28Oh, I love a coupon.
06:29Who doesn't?
06:30Plus, up here, we can float above the streets,
06:33safe in the knowledge that our parking isn't about to run out.
06:37Win-win.
06:39How are we all doing today? Pretty good.
06:41Yeah.
06:43And can we just hear it for our tour guide?
06:46He's so friendly.
06:48Takes me back to my days as a holiday rep.
06:50Picking up passengers from the airport.
06:52I love getting on that mic.
06:56First stop, a Key West landmark.
06:59The furthest south you can possibly get in the whole of the continental US of A.
07:03So the southernmost point buoy just here to your right-hand side.
07:07Oh, look at that.
07:0890 miles to Cuba.
07:10Just 90 miles?
07:11Yeah, just 90 miles across the Florida Straits.
07:14And as you can see, it's a very popular location to have your picture taken.
07:18There's a queue?
07:19Yeah, there's a queue almost every day.
07:21One of the most sought-after photos on the island.
07:24That's unbelievable.
07:25Great spot.
07:28We Brits are drawn to a queue like moths to a flame.
07:35And I'm not going to miss an opportunity for a selfie.
07:38That would be madness.
07:40We can't go without getting our selfie, can we, Bab?
07:42No, we can't.
07:43We're here now.
07:45In truth, this isn't even the southernmost point in the US of A.
07:49That's actually around the corner on an off-limits naval base.
07:53But let's not let that get in the way of a good photo opportunity.
07:57Look at her, she's really going for a pose.
07:59Shall I show everyone my music?
08:00No, please don't.
08:01I'll be so embarrassed.
08:02Oh, no.
08:03Don't.
08:06We're going to lock horns if this carries on.
08:09It's so embarrassing.
08:13Right, let's show them how it's done.
08:1890 miles from Cuba.
08:21Gracias.
08:25Got it.
08:27Surprising fact.
08:28Key West is actually closer to Havana than Miami.
08:32Before the highway was built and long before the Cuban Revolution,
08:36it was easier for locals to sail south to Havana than travel north to Miami.
08:41Lovely.
08:42Amazing.
08:43Sorted.
08:44Let's go.
08:50You are so funny.
08:51With Key West being an island, one of the best ways to enjoy it is to get out onto the crystal-clear waters.
09:04Which, if you're not careful, can cost a fortune.
09:07Boat trips and water sports are pastimes you pay a premium for here.
09:12Especially if you're not part of a group where you can split the cost.
09:17You could go solo and snorkel at Fort Zachary Park.
09:23But there are ways to get out on the water where you don't have to push the boat out.
09:28Well, you do, obviously, but not financially at least.
09:31Captain.
09:32Morning.
09:33I'm Captain Brian. How are you?
09:34You're a hugger.
09:35You are, yes.
09:37This boat trip is not costing us a dime.
09:40Because me and Aidan are volunteering for the Army.
09:44The Marine Army.
09:46Nice boat.
09:48We're talking trash babes.
09:50Offering our services to help clean the ocean.
09:53Do you need any help?
09:56Let's go.
09:58The Conk Republic Marine Army is a team of volunteers who are taking action to clean up the Florida Keys waters.
10:06We call it making friends in trashy places.
10:11Anyone can join in, as long as you're willing to get a little bit wet.
10:15I've got it, I've got it, I've got it, I've got it.
10:18Nice.
10:20You can take that home and hang it up in your office.
10:22There you go.
10:24I got the trash!
10:25Yeah!
10:28It might not look like there's too much floxam and jetsam on the surface here.
10:32I'll get it.
10:33I think you can.
10:34Right?
10:35Yeah, right hand side, yeah.
10:36Alright.
10:37Can I get him trash?
10:38I got it.
10:39Yeah, two!
10:41But these guys are removing rubbish on an industrial level, relying solely on local goodwill to make it happen.
10:49We're going to be selling pool noodles at the end of the day for $5 to raise money.
10:53Every month the volunteers pull out four truckloads of junk.
10:58They're on track for 20 tonnes this year alone.
11:02If that wraps up a round of propeller, that'd be a bad day.
11:06Much of it down to the ever more frequent storms battering the Florida Keys.
11:12Oh, it's a big ball, look at that.
11:15There's still more.
11:17Brian, I'm actually quite shocked at how much rubbish is coming out of this ocean.
11:22Look at all this rope!
11:23Yeah.
11:24This is called trap line, which is rope that attaches the buoy to the lobster or crab trap.
11:30And in storms like hurricanes, they all get torn to shreds and distributed.
11:35And we have about a million of these pots in the Florida Keys in the water.
11:39And about 15% of them get cut off.
11:41And no one has ever cleaned up the Florida Keys like what we're trying to do.
11:44It's unbelievable.
11:45How did this all start off with you, Brian?
11:47It was Hurricane Irma in 2017, came through in September.
11:52And it destroyed our home, and you needed a way to vent.
11:56And an easy way to vent was to find a couple of sofas that were in the water.
12:00And I said, I'm just going to go get one of those out.
12:02So I made a Facebook post, and 25 people showed up to help me go get that sofa.
12:06So I made another post saying, let's do it again.
12:09And four weeks later, I had 125 people show up just looking for something different to do than live in misery.
12:14And then since then, we've pulled out 250 tons of trash, 94 refrigerators, which is crazy.
12:21Numerous Cuban chugs, one kilo of cocaine, and a couple of messages in a bottle.
12:28So we've done 54 miles of the shoreline, very clean.
12:31There's 900 more to go, so we're not even at 10%.
12:34So this is a mega problem.
12:36Everyone agrees that cleaning up our environment here in the Keys is the number one priority.
12:40Our water quality is what we live on.
12:41No one visits here for the cheap rent and the fresh fruits and vegetables, as I say.
12:46It's for the weather and for the water.
12:48And if we don't have that, you know, why come?
12:50Has this changed your life, Brian? Amazingly.
12:52There's nothing better, honestly.
12:53This is a much better way of spending the day than the normal touristy things, in my opinion.
12:57Yeah, I agree.
12:58And I get the benefit because I meet all kinds of people like you.
13:01And here we are. You and I are making friends for life.
13:03Yes, definitely. I'm family now, Bob. I'm in this Marine Army forever.
13:06Yeah, sure.
13:09And I'm not alone.
13:11Numbers have now swelled to a massive 5,000 volunteers.
13:15All willing to get into deep water to do their bit for the local environment.
13:20You did a good job.
13:21You did a good job.
13:25The great thing about this, as well as having no impact on my wallet, is that the whole family can get involved.
13:32There we go.
13:34These pieces are.
13:36One of our little creatures here saying thank you for picking up this habitat.
13:41That's one of our local residents here.
13:43He wanted to say thank you for picking up all this trash and traveling out of the water.
13:46You can't play that one, Aide.
13:49That is a fun.
13:51Put him safely back in his environment.
13:52Put him back in his home.
13:53Thank you very much.
13:54All cleaned up.
13:57As well as the feel good factor, and the fact that it's free, one of the other perks is you get lunch thrown in too, as a reward for your efforts.
14:04We're going to go right in here to this little cove, and if you look over there, there's a big white, looks like a sail.
14:12I can see it.
14:13From a sailboat.
14:14And it looks pretty big.
14:15And it doesn't belong there, so let's go get it out.
14:16Let's go do it.
14:18Time to get stuck in.
14:20You're going to sink down just a little bit when you get there, but it's not terrible.
14:24It's not, it's not.
14:25Let's help Mama.
14:26Yeah.
14:27The Queen.
14:28I think I'm going to get left.
14:29It is.
14:31Yep, just go slow.
14:32Just go really slow.
14:33Am I in it?
14:34Yeah.
14:35Quite literally.
14:36Ooh, I've gone really low.
14:38Yeah, same.
14:39It's my footy stuff.
14:40That's right, come on.
14:41Pull it, just move it up, but gently.
14:44I was the same, I was the same.
14:46That is just so.
14:48I got some trash.
14:50Oh, there's loads of bugs on it.
14:52Yeah.
14:53The thing is, once you start, you can't stop.
14:55What's up, Brian?
14:56Nice.
14:57Got any other treasure?
14:58There's a lot of rug left in here.
14:59Any more plastic in there?
15:01Lovely.
15:03Alison, how you doing?
15:04Good for this one.
15:06Oh, yeah.
15:09I'm not going to lie, it's not exactly glamorous, but getting down and dirty is kind of liberating.
15:16Do you know what?
15:17I'm really enjoying this.
15:18It also gives you more of appreciation about when people throw rubbish away.
15:24You know what?
15:25It could end up in this beautiful, beautiful spot, and we don't want that.
15:31No, no, no.
15:32These guys are working so hard.
15:34All these volunteers are working so hard.
15:37They're not the only ones.
15:40Hey, Alison, look at Aidan.
15:41He's addicted now to getting trash.
15:44It's bizarre, the things we found.
15:47Nice job, buddy.
15:49That's getting it done.
15:51Good work, guys.
15:53Well done, sir.
15:55Well done, darling.
15:57You've just done so well.
15:58I know.
15:59There was so much trash.
16:00It was just constant.
16:01Yeah, it's mad, isn't it?
16:02I can't believe it gets caught up here.
16:04I mean, we found a lemon squeezer.
16:07Did ya?
16:08It's so random.
16:09Let me take that out.
16:10A gas can.
16:11And a gas can, yeah.
16:12Really random stuff.
16:13But it was good fun.
16:14I enjoyed it.
16:15And you're giving something back as well.
16:16It's so good.
16:17You really are.
16:18Well done, babes.
16:19I'm really proud of ya.
16:20It's a lovely feeling, actually, cleaning up.
16:22I was going to say, how are you feeling here?
16:23Really good in my heart, actually, yeah.
16:25It's a lovely thing to do.
16:26You visited the keys and you gave back.
16:28Come back and see us again.
16:29Thanks for coming.
16:33Sure, you can splash the cash and experience more luxury on the water,
16:37but this is so much more satisfying.
16:40And between us, me and Aid collected over 14 pounds of trash.
16:45So many bottles, pool noodles and that lemon squeezer.
16:50And this sense of island community spirit is really starting to come across.
17:00There's a saying the locals use on this island that pretty much sums them up.
17:04We're all here because we're not all there.
17:07Key West has always been a place where larger-than-life characters can feel right at home.
17:13Over the years, the island's all-embracing lifestyle has inspired some colourful eccentrics
17:19to put down roots.
17:21From Tennessee Williams to Jimmy Buffett, who wrote Margaritaville.
17:25But perhaps its most famous resident was America's literary legend.
17:31The Nobel Prize winning, heavy drinking, deep sea fishing, bar brawling genius,
17:38Ernest Hemingway.
17:40Or just Papa to his fans.
17:42For just $18, you can visit the house he called home.
17:46Now a museum with guided tours included.
17:52Legend has it, Hemingway loved to frequent the bars along Duval Street.
17:57Especially this one.
17:59So how does Key West celebrate its connection to such greatness?
18:03Well, in typical Key West style, by gathering every Hemingway lookalike on the planet.
18:09Sloppy Joe's has been in this location for 87 years.
18:15And for 43 of those years, we've hosted the Hemingway lookalike contest
18:20where guys show up from around the world to say,
18:24I want to be the next Papa.
18:26That's a hell of a lot of facial hair.
18:28Local resident Tim Stockwell is one of Key West's keenest competitors.
18:33I was sitting at this very bar and somebody came up and said,
18:37are you here for the contest?
18:38And I didn't know anything about the contest.
18:40I said, what contest?
18:41So they brought down the application for me.
18:44Great then.
18:45I filled it out and made it to the finals my first year.
18:48So I've been to the finals all five years.
18:51I've been to the contest and I made it in the top five twice.
18:54So you never know.
18:56Next year could be a good year.
18:58The competition is stiff, mind you.
19:00With lookalikes identified all over from New Zealand to Norway.
19:05What you have is a lot of eccentric guys showing up to this, right?
19:08And they want to show their flair.
19:10So we come with guys that have bullhorns through their shirts with blood all over it.
19:14We have people come in all kinds of safari outfits.
19:17One year we had a guy show up in a diaper.
19:20You never know what you're going to see show up on that stage for Hemingway days.
19:25And as well as entertaining the locals, this zany contest raises over $100,000 each year towards scholarships for students in the Florida Keys.
19:35I think that Papa would have loved the fact that we're giving away a lot of money to keep people here in his beloved Key West in the Florida Keys.
19:43But what would the great man have made of this island today?
19:48I think what he would particularly like about Key West now is it has kept its eccentricity.
19:53The tolerance for being eccentric and outrageous or being who you want to be, it thrives here.
20:00Almost as famous as Hemingway is another Key West classic.
20:07Something else we've been told not to miss while we're here.
20:10As if.
20:14I'm so excited and I'm so glad that Clinton said that we've got to try Key Lime Pie.
20:19That's why I brought you here.
20:20What, Pepe's?
20:21Award winning Key Lime Pie.
20:23You are.
20:24Well if it's award winning it's good for me.
20:26Come on.
20:27You can't come to Key West and not try Key Lime Pie.
20:32It would be like going to Brom and not having a Balti.
20:36Or Cornwall without devouring a pasty.
20:40There's a chicken behind you.
20:42Even the local chickens want to get in on the action.
20:46If you wanted to save a few dollars, you could get them as take out and eat them on the beach or in the park.
20:52But these guys have been making Key Lime Pie for almost a hundred years.
20:58And the Key Lime King is Danny.
21:02Hello good people, how are y'all doing?
21:04Hi.
21:05We're good.
21:06How are you?
21:07Hello Danny.
21:08It's wonderful to see you dear.
21:09Lovely to see you.
21:10How are you?
21:11Like a new pair of pants ready to rip.
21:13Okay.
21:14I heard there's no calories in your Key Lime Pie.
21:16There's absolutely no.
21:17Is that true?
21:18There's another Key Lime Pie.
21:20No.
21:21I'm not going to say that.
21:22There's a lot of calories.
21:23We make it fresh.
21:25So it's.
21:26Can we get two of them?
21:27That's why I brought my mum here.
21:28I wanted us to try the Key Lime Pie.
21:30Well guess what friend.
21:31I think we can make this happen.
21:33Okay.
21:34Are you going to join us?
21:35I actually will join you.
21:36Yeah.
21:37Come on.
21:38Let's Key Lime Pie.
21:39Do we just need one and then three spoons?
21:41If you'd like to.
21:42I would love to share a Key Lime Pie with you.
21:44Let's share with you.
21:45Oh no.
21:46You're a young strappling man.
21:47I'll have the whole thing.
21:48I'll have the whole thing.
21:49Well guess what.
21:50You're getting the whole thing.
21:51Okay.
21:52Amazing.
21:53Okay.
21:54Thank you darling.
21:56Thank you very much.
21:57The creamy biscuity delight is said to have started here in Key West back in the late 1800s.
22:03Made with the tiny yellowish Key Limes grown here.
22:06It was a no bait treat that early settlers whipped up with whatever they had on hand.
22:12Fishermen even took the pies out to sea for a sweet pick me up.
22:16Yep.
22:17Sometimes the oldies really are the goodies.
22:20Inform your cardiologist.
22:23Welcome to Key Lime Pie.
22:25I think I'm going to want this recipe.
22:27We make it from the ground up.
22:29So literally we do the graham cracker crust.
22:31Key West Key Limes.
22:33And condensed milk.
22:35And all those things that are really part healthy.
22:37Okay.
22:38Cheers everyone.
22:39Cheers.
22:40Cheers.

23:19Thank you very much.
23:20Sorry I can't speak right now.
23:23I'll be honest with you.
23:24It's not often I'm rendered speechless.
23:26But I need to find my voice again because before we go.
23:29I've just been given a tip off about another quirky perk in this restaurant.
23:34I just found out that this telephone box, it gives free international calls so I thought,
23:40you know what, I'm going to call my sister but I've only got three minutes to do it in.
23:44This was introduced for the locals.
23:47I hope that's a number.
23:48What?
23:49When it was the only phone working on the whole island during a hurricane, it was the only
23:58way to keep in touch with family.
