00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:02This looks like a bunch of crap.
00:05So far, Tyler's satellite idea for picking is a total disaster in progress.
00:11What is that?
00:12It's a stove.
00:12Wow, it sure is squash in the car.
00:15Old school stuff like this.
00:16There's valve issues, and I'm not going to be responsible for you blowing your house up.
00:19Okay?
00:20Wow, that thing's cool.
00:22It's just something I've never seen in my life.
00:23I've been around, too.
00:24Tell me how you see it getting restored.
00:26I would like it.
00:27A little pimped out.
00:30Look at a man's workbench.
00:33You see his passions.
00:36His works in progress.
00:39The things that drive him crazy.
00:44Projects that?
00:45You get the point.
00:47Anyway, every workbench tells a story, and this is ours.
00:52American Restoration.
01:00Needs a cleaning.
01:02What the heck is that?
01:05Hey, Rick, we have a customer here.
01:07Earlier, I got a call from a customer that said he's bringing up something from Texas.
01:11And when they say everything's big in Texas, they ain't kidding.
01:15What is that?
01:16It's a stove.
01:18That's a stove?
01:19That's a stove.
01:19Wow.
01:20Mysterious squash in the car.
01:21Came down to Rick's today to bring my 1920-era roper stove to see if you can restore it for me.
01:26Am I clear the truck?
01:27Yeah, you're good.
01:29I probably overpacked it.
01:31All right.
01:32Looks like Houdini.
01:33But it got here safely.
01:35This thing's gigantic.
01:36Where was this?
01:37It was at a church that my dad pastored at when I was a kid.
01:39And I went by to see the place.
01:41And this was outside.
01:42Okay.
01:43And they were willing to sell it.
01:44Heck yeah.
01:45Why was it so important for you to have it?
01:47Well, this is a link to not only my dad, but the church.
01:50Right.
01:51My mama's will because she used to cook on this thing.
01:53I just couldn't pass it up.
01:54This is a unique piece.
01:55Oh, absolutely.
01:56It's a work of art, too.
01:57It's absolutely beautiful.
01:58I know people who kill for this.
02:00I mean, it was definitely commercial.
02:02You think so?
02:03Oh, yeah.
02:03You'd never see this in somebody's kitchen.
02:05The sheer size of this thing is too big for your average home.
02:08I'm guessing a restaurant donated it instead of throwing it away.
02:12Now, you're wanting to use this?
02:14I'd love to be able to use this.
02:15Are you worried about the liability?
02:17I'm trusting you.
02:18That's very important.
02:19Because you just said you're trusting me.
02:20Right.
02:21I can restore it all day long, but I'm not going to be responsible for you blowing your house up.
02:25Okay?
02:26Old school stuff like this, there's valve issues.
02:29Right.
02:29All these are definitely capable of leaking.
02:31This thing is going to be a plumber's nightmare.
02:33Many of these pipes could be damaged inside and out.
02:36And an item like this, there is zero room for error.
02:39So I will make sure that we get somebody down here that can make sure that this thing does not leak.
02:44Okay.
02:45You think there's hope for this thing?
02:47Yeah.
02:47But, I mean, this is porcelain.
02:49Yeah.
02:49And that's a big deal because you can't just porcelain on top.
02:53It has to go all the way to bare metal again.
02:55When you porcelain something, you're basically glazing each piece and then baking it onto the metal.
03:01It's a very involved process.
03:03So where do you think this is going to run me?
03:05All right.
03:05So after all the sandblasting and the porcelain and the nickel plating and assembling it, I'm looking at $8,500.
03:11Well, I think it'll be worth it.
03:14All right.
03:14Awesome.
03:15Thanks for bringing it in.
03:16It's a beautiful piece.
03:17It's going to be exciting to see the restoration because my wife plans on cooking on it, and I'm going to hold her to it.
03:32Yeah, baby!
03:34Hey, here's the address for the porcelain plater, okay?
03:38All right.
03:38Down in California, all right?
03:40Okay.
03:40One of the biggest components to the roper stove is the porcelain.
03:43We're not equipped to do porcelain here at the shop, so I'm having Ron take it to a specialist.
03:49You got some picks, too, you're going on?
03:50Of course.
03:51Good.
03:51Of course.
03:52The porcelain shop is all the way in California, so to get the most bang for my buck, I'm going to have Ron do some pick'em while he's out there.
03:58Well, can I go?
03:59No.
04:00Our foreman's job is to be here and make sure the crew runs.
04:03You can't go running on the road anymore.
04:05I've got new methods of picking.
04:07I can find uncharted territory and a bunch of cool stuff, and it'll be good for the business.
04:11I came up with this ingenious way of finding new picking locations using satellite maps on the internet.
04:17But trying to explain it to these two dinosaurs is kind of like trying to explain algebra to a chipmunk.
04:23Trying to teach old dogs new tricks or some crap.
04:25Just let me go.
04:27It's only once.
04:28If I let you go this one time, you're not going down just to have a good time sleeping in the side of the truck, loving and enjoying life.
04:35This is work.
04:36Work, work, work, work, work.
04:38Okay?
04:39Oh, God.
04:39You good?
04:40Yeah.
04:40Okay, I'm going to let you go.
04:41This one time, you've got one day, one full day.
04:44Go down there, get the picking, get the work done, and get back here that night.
04:49All right?
04:49Have fun.
04:51Go.
04:52Don't act like you're foreman on the road, pal.
04:53I really hope my theory works, because if I don't come back with some good stuff, my dad's never going to let me go on a pick again.
04:59I got a call from some customers who have an unusual hand-powered vehicle that they want to get restored, and I can't wait to see what it is.
05:13I'm Chuck.
05:14Chuck, I'm Rick.
05:14Tony.
05:15Tony.
05:15Tony, good to meet you.
05:16Tell me about the truck first.
05:17That's bad.
05:18It's a 1938 Rio.
05:20It was made for the forestry service.
05:22It used to have a big water tank on the back.
05:25Yeah, it's very cool.
05:26I can see what you're bringing, though.
05:28What is that?
05:29What is that?
05:30Let's bring it out.
05:31Let's bring it out.
05:32We've come to Rick's Restorations today to get our 1900s Irish Mail Tricycle restored.
05:38Oh, wow.
05:39That thing's cool.
05:40Where'd you get this?
05:41Had a swap meet.
05:42We've had it for 28 years.
05:44The gentleman we bought it from was calling it an Irish Mail, and that's why we have always called it that.
05:49Irish Mail Carts are usually kids' vehicles that were named after railroad hand cars that use the same mechanics to move.
05:56This thing works like an Irish Mail Cart, but it's different than anything I've ever seen.
06:01The original Irish Mail Cart were all four-wheeled.
06:04Then this thing is designed with three wheels.
06:08It's got two brakes.
06:09It's got shocks on it.
06:11I mean, that's pretty wild.
06:12It's got some serious thought into this thing, the way they built it.
06:16It's just something I've never seen in my life.
06:18I've been around, too.
06:19I've been around.
06:20It's pretty dang weird.
06:22I think it's safe to say that this thing is not an Irish Mail Cart.
06:25I mean, there's just too many differences.
06:27But I'm going to have to do some serious research to figure out exactly what it is.
06:32Tell me how you see it getting restored.
06:35I'm going to be the primary driver of this.
06:37Okay.
06:37So I would like it a little pent out and a little bit of flash.
06:42We're going to hot rod this bad boy?
06:44Yes.
06:45But if we find that it is one of a kind and we want to keep it all original, I would leave that up to you then for the looks.
06:54I mean, that's the two options.
06:55One, restoring it to where it's pristine, original, the way it used to be.
06:59Or we sort of make it nice and pretty.
07:03Flash, yeah.
07:04Flash.
07:04All right.
07:05I really have to research it before we decide on what we do it in.
07:10Bottom line, right?
07:11Right.
07:11Okay.
07:12All right.
07:12So getting the whole thing done.
07:14I'm looking at 5,500 to do that whole bite.
07:16Okay, Rick.
07:17You want to do that?
07:18Yeah, I will do it.
07:19Awesome.
07:20Thank you, Rick.
07:20You're a good man.
07:22Thank you very much.
07:23When Rick told us the budget, we've had it for 28 years and it's worth it.
07:28We wanted another 28 years.
07:34Hey, Rick.
07:36Hey, Mark.
07:37How are you doing?
07:38Man, I'm all glad to see you.
07:40Earlier, a customer brought in a weird pump tricycle thing into the shop.
07:44It was really cool, but we have no idea what it is.
07:48My friend, Mark, is a museum curator and sees weird stuff like this all the time.
07:53So I called him down to take a look at it.
07:55This couple brought this in and they basically feel like it's a 1930s Irish mailer.
08:01So they want it restored.
08:03And if it is rare, they want to restore it exactly like it was.
08:06If it's not, she wants to sort of halfway hot rod it.
08:10So you know what it is?
08:11Let me just take a look here.
08:14Yeah.
08:15Okay.
08:16Yeah, this is it.
08:18It's an Invalid's card.
08:19It's a motorized wheelchair from France.
08:22Ah.
08:22This is from the late 1920s and it's by a company called Poirier.
08:27You know, in France at that point in time, you had a lot of guys that had been injured
08:30in World War I.
08:31Oh, right.
08:32Right, right, right.
08:33And we were still dealing with polio then.
08:35A lot of people would lose their mobility that way.
08:37So if you had the money, you could get around using this.
08:40Right, right.
08:41But there weren't a lot of them made.
08:43These are extraordinarily rare.
08:45Wow.
08:45To actually have Mark, the museum guru of gurus, tell me that he has never seen one, this
08:52is awesome.
08:53This is rare enough that I'm glad to have it restored and not tricked out.
08:57You know, pimping your wheelchair is not something that I want to see done.
09:01It just seems wrong.
09:03Now that the mystery is solved and we know exactly how rare this wheelchair is, I'm going
09:07to go ahead and restore it to its original condition just like the customer wanted.
09:11This is going to look like a museum piece by the time we're finished with it.
09:14All right, Mark, thanks very much.
09:16Not a problem.
09:17We'll have fun.
09:18Okay.
09:19Man.
09:21We just dropped off the roper stove parts so they can get a new porcelain finish.
09:25While that's getting done, we're going to check out a picking spot that Tyler found using
09:29some weird internet deal.
09:31I'm trying to incorporate the new age where you can look on a map on the internet and you
09:36can see overhead like a big satellite image.
09:40So, I looked and I found this guy and he just has a house full of stuff.
09:46So, we're basically going off of a picture of some guy's backyard.
09:51You've got to be kidding me.
09:53Well, it'll be fine.
09:54I mean, it should work.
09:56This is in your hands.
09:57All right.
09:57Trust me.
09:58It'll be good.
09:59I got a feeling.
10:02One shot.
10:03You only get one chance.
10:04Don't be jealous.
10:05Dude, honestly, this looks like a bunch of crap.
10:11One good thing you got going is there's some buildings.
10:13But could you tell what was in those buildings from your map?
10:17Don't be such a pessimist.
10:18I have your fingers crossed there, pal.
10:20Here, this must be the guy I talked to.
10:22You call me?
10:22Yeah, I'm the guy you talked to on the phone.
10:24Nice to meet you.
10:24I've collected a lot of stuff out here and seen one to come look at some of my junk.
10:28So, I thought, what the heck?
10:29Maybe get rid of some of it.
10:30Well, we're here to look through your stuff.
10:33Look around.
10:34Whatever you find's for sale.
10:35Just come get me when you're ready.
10:36All right.
10:37We'll come get you.
10:37Thanks a lot.
10:38No problem.
10:39You know, there better not be snakes in here.
10:42You're the one with flip-flops on, again.
10:44We got ends of rakes.
10:45We got whatever that is.
10:49Are we scrappers now?
10:50Is this something that you saw from the air?
10:54Ew.
10:55Look at its head.
10:56Look at its eyeballs.
10:57That is something somebody had up.
10:59Oh!
11:01Oh!
11:02And bloody head fell off!
11:04It's eyeball fell.
11:05Oh, crap.
11:06Pick it up.
11:06I'll fix it.
11:07So far, Tyler's internet satellite idea for picking is a total disaster in progress.
11:13When it comes to picking, nothing beats a good old-fashioned phone call and meeting people
11:18face-to-face.
11:19Unfortunately, this isn't looking good for you.
11:22All we can hope is it ends up being way better than it looks right now.
11:25Hey, Rick.
11:31Hey, Mike.
11:32A customer dropped off a 1920s roper stove to get restored.
11:36This is an old gas stove, so we have to check every single pipe for leaks, or this thing
11:41could literally blow the roof off.
11:43So what you working on here?
11:45We've got an old roper stove.
11:46Where is the manifold right now?
11:48Um, part of it's over there.
11:49Can we use this?
11:50Absolutely.
11:51I'm an appliance repair expert.
11:52I've been repairing appliances for 35 years.
11:55So what I want to do is I just want to make sure this thing doesn't leak.
11:57So, I mean, we've got this thing sort of halfway set up here for you.
12:00You know, I want you to test it.
12:02Well, what we're going to do here is light each one of them.
12:04Okay.
12:05And see if we have a leak.
12:07If we don't have a leak, you won't get a flame.
12:09If we do, you will.
12:10But it's critical that it's tested, because if you have a gas leak and you don't know about
12:15it, it could cause an explosion.
12:17Show me what you do.
12:18All right.
12:18See here?
12:19A little flame to that.
12:20That one looks good.
12:22Yeah, that looks good.
12:24So far, we look really good here.
12:26No leaks.
12:27Looks good.
12:28That has a gas leak.
12:30Yeah, this one's going to need to be replaced.
12:32Oh, yeah.
12:32Man, am I glad I called Mike, because if we didn't catch this leak, this thing could
12:37have been a total disaster.
12:38What's causing that to leak?
12:40Inside here, it's worn, so we'll lubricate all the valves.
12:44Okay.
12:44We'll readjust everything on here.
12:46We'll have this working fantastic.
12:48Thank you very much, Mike.
12:49Thanks for calling me in, Rick.
12:50You bet.
12:50I appreciate it a lot.
12:57What's a filco?
12:58Hey.
12:59Lucky there's not a hit in there or something.
13:01Ron and my dad let me choose a piggy location for the first time, and we haven't found squat
13:05yet.
13:06And I'm actually a little nervous, because my butt's on the line for this one.
13:10What's this?
13:11It's an eighth of a car.
13:13Model A?
13:13Model T?
13:14I don't know.
13:15Can you see it now?
13:17This is badass.
13:18You like it?
13:19Yeah, mainly because in the shop, he's got old stuff hanging, you know, basically as art.
13:25Yeah.
13:26Hold on.
13:26What?
13:27This might just save you.
13:30Maybe.
13:30These are from the 20s.
13:32Really?
13:33They're just ice boxes.
13:34They're not refrigerated.
13:35How do you just ice and not refrigerated?
13:37Ice blocks.
13:37Oh.
13:38Put an ice block on top.
13:39Cold air goes down.
13:40So they cool everything off.
13:41There's a drain on the bottom.
13:43We've done some of these, but this two-door, that is rare.
13:46All right.
13:47Let's go find Jimmy.
13:48Remember everything you saw in this amazing 50 years?
13:50Nope.
13:52Jimmy!
13:53Jim!
13:54Well, did you guys find anything?
13:55The front end of a Model T or Model A.
13:57An old rust one?
13:58Yeah.
13:59How about 150?
14:01I think 100's fair on that.
14:03All right.
14:03That's cool on that.
14:04Okay?
14:05The two ice boxes down there.
14:06What do you got on those?
14:09350.
14:10We said we wouldn't do that.
14:11150.
14:13150 for each?
14:14For each?
14:15Yeah.
14:15A piece.
14:17The one's got a broken leg on it.
14:18That's going to be a little bit more to repair.
14:21I won't go.
14:22I can't give you more than 300 for both of those.
14:25That'll work.
14:26Okay.
14:26Let's do it.
14:27It's a deal.
14:28I think Tyler completely lucked out today.
14:30But we did find some interesting pieces,
14:32and I hope that Rick likes what we found.
14:34Thanks for coming.
14:35How about I help you guys get it loaded up?
14:37Let's go.
14:38You're going to have to help me, because Tyler don't do .
14:42We just got in dozens of nickel-plated and porcelain pieces
14:45for the Roper Stove we'll restore it.
14:48The customer's coming in soon, so the guys are putting everything back together again
14:52before he gets here.
14:55Hey.
14:55How you doing?
14:56I'm doing pretty good.
14:57Good to see you, Blair.
14:58Long trip?
14:58I flew this time.
15:00Okay.
15:00I came to Rick's today to pick up my 1920s Roper Stove.
15:03It was in pretty bad shape when I brought it in.
15:05I'm excited to see what Rick has been able to do with it.
15:07So you want to see it?
15:08Oh, yes.
15:08All right.
15:09Let's go.
15:10I had to put it in a spot that I could show it to you.
15:14You ready?
15:14Yes.
15:15You excited?
15:16Yes.
15:16Okay.
15:17Here it is.
15:18Oh, my gosh.
15:19What do you think?
15:20My gosh.
15:22It's amazing.
15:24Oh, my gosh.
15:25When I first saw my stove, it just took my breath away, because it brought back emotions.
15:30It brought back feelings, which I just really didn't expect.
15:33And I had myself, I had it, I had my hopes set pretty high.
15:40But to see it is unbelievable.
15:42I live for moments like this.
15:44Seeing this guy's reaction for all the hard work that we put into it makes it all worth it.
15:49My dad was the pastor of the church, which this thing recited in.
15:52I just really hated to see it on the side of the church resting.
15:55Right.
15:55I felt like I had to rescue it.
15:57Right.
15:57The stove itself just represents the time in my life that my entire family goes together.
16:01And, uh, that means a lot to me.
16:07So does it look like the one from your childhood?
16:10Oh.
16:12Actually, I think it looks a little bit better than it did from childhood.
16:14And do you think your wife will let you put it in the house?
16:17My wife's going to love this.
16:19Yeah, I literally had every guy on this piece.
16:22All these valves, I took all the insides out, redid them.
16:26I had this specialist come over.
16:27He actually checked over each one of the valves.
16:29So now it's all safe.
16:30That's astonishing.
16:31I'm tickled pink with how it looks.
16:33The million-dollar question is, does it work?
16:36Well, let's give it a try.
16:38So you're going to push down this right here.
16:41And what you're going to do is come down and light this section right here.
16:44Now we'll turn this burner on.
16:46There you go.
16:47Yeah.
16:48That's neat.
16:49I don't know what made me happier, seeing this stove look like new or restoring such a meaningful memory for this customer.
16:55I mean, that's what you call a win-win situation.
16:58Thank you very much for bringing it in.
17:01I'm excited to get it home.
17:01It looks cool.
17:02It's going to be something that we will be proud of.
17:04And we'll always have a story about how we got it restored.
17:08Around the shop, we use a lot of unusual tools.
17:11I want to know if you know what this is.
17:17It may look like dirt or bird seed to you, but it's actually walnut shells.
17:23It's a fine abrasive that allows us to take off rust and paint in the glass beating machine.
17:29It's really helpful here at the shop, because it's strong enough to get the job done, but fine enough not to destroy the metal.
17:41Come on back.
17:42Come on back.
17:43Earlier today, Tyler took charge of his first pick, based on a lead he developed.
17:48And like most things with Tyler, I'm hoping for the best and preparing for the worst.
17:53So, how do you do?
17:54I'll put it this way.
17:55For somebody who did his first pick on the internet.
17:58How do you pick on the internet?
17:59There's no such thing.
18:00Because I'm that good.
18:01Yeah.
18:02Can't wait to see what's in here.
18:06We got some yard art here.
18:07Where's the rest of the car?
18:09We didn't get this for a restoration project.
18:11We got this for more of a sign, something cool to do with.
18:15What are we now, art dealers?
18:16What did you pay for this piece of s***?
18:19A hundred.
18:21I guess I can see you doing something with it.
18:23Now these, these I think are cool.
18:27Did you get these the same pick?
18:28Yeah.
18:29These are really cool.
18:31He said he saw these from the satellite.
18:39Looks like a square piece of metal from a satellite.
18:42And what are they, laying on their back?
18:44You know, they can laugh it up all they want.
18:46But me and my internet genius, we delivered big this time.
18:49Those two things right there, we're going to score on those.
18:52Those are killer.
18:53So I think you guys did a good job.
18:55Really.
18:56Really, you did, Ty.
18:57I'm such a winner.
18:58Get this stuff unloaded, and let's get back to work.
19:00All right?
19:00Good job, though.
19:01See ya.
19:05We're putting the final touches on an antique wheelchair
19:08that we totally restored.
19:10We weren't even sure what this thing was
19:12when the customers dropped it off,
19:13so I can't wait to show it to them now.
19:15Hey, guys.
19:20Hey.
19:21Hi, Rick.
19:21Hey, Rick.
19:22So you guys excited to see this thing?
19:23Very.
19:24Been sitting on the porch a long time, and it would rust it.
19:27It was either throw it away or restore it,
19:29and we didn't have the heart to throw it away.
19:32I learned quite a bit about it,
19:33and the way it came out, I can't wait for you to see.
19:35We're excited to find out what it really is.
19:39Oh, here it comes.
19:40Oh, wow.
19:44Are we going to look that good driving?
19:46Oh, wow.
19:49Weaning.
19:50Oh, wow.
19:51That is beautiful.
19:52It's multicolored.
19:54It's detailed.
19:54It's beautiful.
19:55We love it.
19:56This is beyond belief.
19:57It's truly vintage, but it's so spruced up.
19:59Yeah, it's not over-restored.
20:00This is everything we wanted.
20:01Well, here's what I found out.
20:03I have a friend.
20:04His name is Mark, and he owns a museum,
20:05and he told me this is basically a wheelchair out of Paris.
20:08And one of the things he told me not to do was pot-rod it.
20:12He said do not,
20:14because there's maybe one or two of these in the United States.
20:17This is one rare piece.
20:20That is so cool.
20:21Look at that.
20:22To hear Rick say that there's only one, two, or three left in the United States
20:26was really exciting.
20:28Tell us what you did.
20:29All right, well, here's the deal.
20:30That's how they came.
20:31In that era, this is exactly how you would have bought it.
20:34Wow.
20:35The upholstery is all leather.
20:36He did the exact same buttons we had in there,
20:38and they did the burlap on the sides, too.
20:40Well, the birds can't build nests on top of it anymore, that's for sure.
20:43On the wheels, I just was really afraid if I took it off, I would have broke it.
20:47So I left it.
20:48And by tightening the spokes, it trued the wheel so it could ride it without the tire falling off.
20:54Wow.
20:54And they were painted this same color.
20:55That's the color.
20:56That is the color it came with.
20:58Love it.
20:59Perfection.
21:02You bet.
21:02You bet.
21:02So, ready to take a ride?
21:05Yeah.
21:05I'll give you a little push forward.
21:06Okay.
21:07We had no idea what we were going to get, but we were excited to get some more information.
21:12The final product is beyond expectations.
21:15Okay, pump it now.
21:17You got to pump it.
21:18There you go.
21:19Yeah.
21:21She looks like she's having fun.
21:23Oh, she's having a great time.
21:24She's going to drive it home.
21:27All right, well, she's out there.
21:28You want to go in the office with me and take care of some paperwork?
21:30Let's do it.
21:31All right.
21:31All right.
21:31All right.
21:32Look at that.
21:33Go.
