Weeks after its presidential election was held, Honduran authorities have declared Nasry Asfura the winner. Asfura was endorsed by US President Donald Trump and has indicated support for re-establishing formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan. The result has been rejected by rival candidate Salvador Nasralla and the head of the Honduran congress.

00:00Nazri Azfura, a conservative candidate and the former mayor of Honduras' capital city,
00:06has been named the winner of the country's presidential election.
00:10It's been more than three weeks since the election,
00:13vote counting plagued by technical problems, delays and allegations of fraud,
00:18finally ending with an announcement from Honduras' electoral body.
00:24By the majority will of the Honduran people expressed sovereignly at the polls,
00:29the full board of the National Electoral Council declares Nazri Azfura
00:33elected as constitutional president of the Republic of Honduras
00:37for a four-year term beginning on January 27, 2026.
00:42Azfura posted on social media saying he's ready to govern and will not fail the country.
00:48But the second-place candidate, Salvador Nazraa,
00:51who appears to have lost by less than one percentage point,
00:54says he will not accept the results and will not concede.
00:57And the head of the Honduran Congress says the results have, quote, no value.
01:03Still, the Electoral Council's announcement is being welcomed by some.
01:08U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio says the U.S. looks forward to working with Azfura
01:13to strengthen security cooperation and economic ties,
01:16as well as collaboration on immigration issues.
01:20U.S. President Donald Trump had endorsed Azfura,
01:23threatening to cut off financial support to the country if he didn't win.
01:26And if the results stand, it could mean good news for Taiwan, too.
01:32Azfura has signaled he may re-establish diplomatic ties with Taipei,
01:36which were cut off in 2023 when the country established formal relations with China.
01:41The country's economy has since suffered.
01:44And Azfura has said that Honduras was 100 times better off with Taiwan,
01:48pledging to move the country away from Beijing.
01:51Taiwan's foreign ministry says it respects the choice of the Honduran people
01:55and is urging Azfura to implement policies that benefit them.
01:59Meanwhile, China's foreign ministry says it will work with Honduras to advance bilateral relations
02:04on the basis of its One China Principle, which claims Taiwan as part of China.
02:09And while it's still uncertain whether Azfura will follow through on his campaign pledges,
02:15we will likely see Taipei moving to foster closer relations with the new administration.
