00:00And in Honduras, an electoral coup has taken place with the declaration of Nasri Asfura as president by two members of the National Electoral Council without concluding the special count or resolving the challenges that have filed.
00:14The representatives of the two-party system in the National Electoral Council, Ana Paula Hall and Cosette López, officially declare the presidential victory of the nationalist candidate Nasri Asfura through the controversial broadcast of preliminary election results without having completed the special count as required by Honduran law and with six days still remaining for the review of irregularities.
00:41For his part, CNE Consular Marlon Ochoa had warned that a declaration without exhausting all administrative processes constitutes a criminal offence amid demands from the citizenry for a vote by vote count.
00:55This declaration confirms the execution of the electoral coup by the two-party system with the support of foreign interference, crimes that have been repeatedly denounced by the Liberty and Refoundation Party.
01:11In this context, let's recall who Nasri Asfura is. He was the candidate for the National Party. He is a wealthy construction tycoon and former major of Tegucigalpa and the candidate of Honduras' traditional right-wing establishment.
01:30Notably, he has been publicly endorsed by U.S. President Donald Trump, who declared Asfura the candidate that Washington would support and on whom future U.S. aid allegedly depends.
01:43Asfura's presidential run ended in defeat, but his return is seen as an attempt to reinstall the political forces linked to ex-president Juan Orlando Hernandez now serving a U.S. prison sentence for drug trafficking and weapons smuggling, who he was just pardoned.
02:02He was named Asfura in the Pandora Papers for offshore holdings and faced corruption allegations.
