00:00:00Coming up next from Las Vegas, our main event, it'll be relentless Lehman Brewster, and he's ready to make his first defense of the WBO heavyweight title against relatively unknown Kali Meehan.
00:00:14Well, when there's no dominant champion, entrance into the heavyweight elite comes via revolving door.
00:00:20In April, Vladimir Klitschko exited, and Lehman Brewster made a most emphatic entrance.
00:00:24Previously dismissed as an underachiever, Brewster's knockout of Klitschko as a shocker.
00:00:29In that fight, he showed a big punch and a strong chin.
00:00:33At heavyweight, those two attributes can take you a long way, whether you're fighting a giant like Vladimir Klitschko or a former sparring partner like Kali Meehan.
00:00:48For four rounds, the fight proceeded as predicted.
00:00:52The powerful Vladimir Klitschko dominated, frustrating, and punishing his little-known opponent.
00:00:59But in the final moments of the fifth round, Lehman Brewster changed all that, stopping the 11-to-1 favorite and winning the WBO title.
00:01:09That was the first fight I ever had where I just felt so relaxed and comfortable that it was like, wow, it's an out-of-body experience.
00:01:17I was never affected by any of his punches, even though he threw a million of them.
00:01:22When the time was right, my switch just came on and said, okay, now we turn on the nitro.
00:01:28And he couldn't, you know, he couldn't endure.
00:01:32Now the story takes another strange twist.
00:01:35The newly crowned champion is making his first title defense against Kali Meehan, a man who helped prepare him for that huge upset win.
00:01:45He was my top sparring partner.
00:01:47You know, he gave me headaches, and I hope I gave him some.
00:01:50Because Kali Meehan can fight, Jack.
00:01:52Meehan, a former professional rugby player, has compiled a 29-1 record.
00:01:57And the towering Australian was invited to Brewster's camp to approximate the size and imitate the fighting style of Vladimir Klitschko.
00:02:06Together, Brewster and he sparred countless rounds and forged a friendship.
00:02:11Obviously, I was over the moon.
00:02:13I mean, to fight for a heavyweight world title has been my dream since I've been a little boy.
00:02:18And also, there was a little bit of feeling like I wish it was someone else.
00:02:23First, I was like, man, I don't want to fight this guy.
00:02:26I know this guy.
00:02:27But then I had to get my personal feelings passed and say, hey, man, this is business.
00:02:32Unless it was like my mother or somebody, I'd knock my brother out.
00:02:35You know what I'm saying?
00:02:37To win in boxing, you must hurt your opponent as frequently and as viciously as possible.
00:02:43Tonight, Brewster and Meehan put their relationship aside to vie for the heavyweight title.
00:02:49It's just him saying, hey, you know what?
00:02:51I think my skills are better than yours.
00:02:53And I say, no, I think my skills are better.
00:02:56Less filling.
00:02:57Tastes great.
00:02:57Deep down, I know I have the better skills, you know.
00:03:00Too much of my skills against him, it's an honor.
00:03:05We might knock each other out.
00:03:07Who knows, man?
00:03:08We both will be out, you know.
00:03:09But it's going to be a good fight, though.
00:03:11Well, I hope my jaw ain't sore because if it is, he's going to buy me dinner.
00:03:14They look like they're ready for their own talk show, the comedy circuit.
00:03:22Even though he's been around for a while, Lehman Brewster qualifies as a fresh face in a division that remains in desperate need of one.
00:03:28With his KO of Klitschko, he created a ton of momentum.
00:03:31The question from tonight forward, is he good enough to capitalize on?
00:03:36Back here with my partner, Al Bernstein.
00:03:38And Al, with tonight's matchup, two guys who obviously know each other very well.
00:03:41They sparred 76 rounds together.
00:03:44It would seem a major advantage for the champion.
00:03:47Well, you know, sparring sessions feature bigger gloves, headgear, and certainly a more controlled environment.
00:03:52And at least one of the fighters is functioning normally like a scout team in football.
00:03:56And in this case, it was Meehan who was impersonating Vladimir Klitschko when he sparred with Brewster.
00:04:02Now, real matches are different.
00:04:04So while there is some familiarity, there could also be some false impressions for either boxer from those sessions.
00:04:10And tonight's strategies have to be forged with that in mind.
00:04:19Brewster's jab is a good, though, underused punch.
00:04:21He should use it tonight.
00:04:23Now, if Meehan lays all over him, it will create some fatigue and limit Brewster's punching ability.
00:04:31The left hook is Brewster's calling card, and it won him his championship.
00:04:35If Meehan, like Klitschko here, lowers his head, then Brewster can score with combinations like the hook and the right hand.
00:04:46And Brewster's payoff punch, the left hook, is Meehan's major worry in this fight.
00:04:53It's a powerful punch to the head and also to the body, and he'll unveil it often tonight.
00:05:07Meehan has a five-inch height advantage, and he should use it.
00:05:10Kelly sometimes lowers his hands after he punches.
00:05:13Brewster can counter that, especially with the hook.
00:05:15Knocking out Brewster is very hard, as Klitschko found out, so Meehan needs to keep working and win rounds.
00:05:22So, Lehmann Brewster, a 10-to-1 underdog, going into his fight with Vladimir Klitschko, a 10-to-1 favorite, entering this fight with Kali Meehan.
00:05:34The engaging Kali Meehan, the first Australian-based fighter to go for a heavyweight title in 100 years.
00:05:43History aside, Meehan, a former house painter, who's not exactly a household name in the United States.
00:05:49Now he got ranked number 15, almost incredulous.
00:05:55A lot of inactivity, low-level opposition.
00:05:57And the one time he stepped up, he was obliterated in 32 seconds by Danny Williams.
00:06:04Yes, the same Danny Williams who knocked out Mike Tyson.
00:06:07I guess it's a rhetorical question, but what has he done to earn this opportunity?
00:06:15You know, some might say that by being the sparring partner of Lehmann Brewster, you can make the case that at least he has familiarity with him.
00:06:24Imagine if he was a 10-to-1 underdog coming in against a fighter he had never been in the ring with.
00:06:29He thinks at least that familiarity gives him some clue as to what he might be able to do in this fight.
00:06:33We'll see.
00:06:34Yeah, he may be known as the best big man down under, but in all honesty, very, very difficult for a lot of folks in boxing to take him seriously on this particular level.
00:06:47You have to question his resume, but you can't question his heart as a human being.
00:06:56He sat out for about a year in boxing a couple of years ago, and in order to get his family together, he was a garbage man.
00:07:09He worked in night security.
00:07:11He played rugby league football, which is a very, very rough sport.
00:07:14So you can, you know, question why he's here, but you can't question his guts and his heart.
00:07:18And he's a very good athlete, and one of the things that he does, if he doesn't get hurt early,
00:07:24Callie Meehan has the chance to set a certain tempo in this fight against a Brewster who told us he might not attack as dramatically as Meehan thinks he's going through.
00:07:34So the hope for Callie Meehan is to get through those early couple of rounds and then set a tempo where it's kind of a, I don't want to say this, but a little more like a sparring session where Brewster isn't attempting to knock his head off with every punch.
00:07:48And that's not out of the question, but certainly the burden of proof is on Callie Meehan to make that happen.
00:07:53Yeah, that's the thing with Brewster.
00:07:57You never know if he's going to go in and try to take a guy's head off or if he's going to, you know, box and jab and move around a lot.
00:08:04He's been very inconsistent.
00:08:05This is now becoming the longest ring walk in the last five years.
00:08:09He is literally shuffling along.
00:08:12And I guess, you know, it's the old 15 minutes of fame, and Callie Meehan wants to make it truly.
00:08:17Well, maybe 25 minutes.
00:08:17In this case, it may be an hour.
00:08:19Yeah.
00:08:19I don't think I've ever seen a fighter walk this slow to a ring.
00:08:27He is certainly taking his time.
00:08:30It looks like a traffic jam on the Long Island Expressway or something.
00:08:34Times Square on New Year's Eve.
00:08:37I'm really not sure what the rationale for this is, but...
00:08:44You could make the case, I guess, that he doesn't want to get in that ring, but...
00:08:48Clearly, we assume he must, and they're just absolutely sauntering.
00:08:53Actually, sauntering is the wrong phrase, because they're not even sauntering.
00:08:56But we see the ring in sight.
00:08:58That's good news for all of us.
00:08:59Shuffling's not even the right phrase.
00:09:03Well, they're here from down under to support Callie Meehan.
00:09:06And he finally makes it into the ring after one of the longest and slowest ring walks we've
00:09:13ever seen.
00:09:15That was like slow motion.
00:09:18It was the complete antithesis of Corey Sphinx's ring walk, where he was dancing around.
00:09:25Well, he's finally made it.
00:09:26The question is, will the ring walk be longer than the fight?
00:09:31And has this moment gotten the better of Callie Meehan?
00:09:34We'll see.
00:09:35Who has a mouthpiece?
00:09:38He's been in the United States about five times this third trip to Las Vegas.
00:09:42Some of them on sparring missions.
00:09:44And one of his sparring partners, you're looking at, Lehman Brewster, returning to the scene
00:09:49of his compelling comeback win over heavily favored Vladimir Klitschko.
00:09:53Many feel tonight represents his reward with the very safe opponent in Meehan.
00:10:00Therefore, Brewster, as was Spinks earlier, must not only prevail, but do it convincingly.
00:10:07And in many minds, that means a knockout, a good knockout.
00:10:11Tough to question Brewster's chin or heart.
00:10:13But being a champion in today's weak heavyweight climate does not hurt his cause.
00:10:19Nevertheless, Al, it's got to be an incredible thrill to be walking in for the first time
00:10:25as a heavyweight champion.
00:10:26A lot of emotion, the same place where he won the championship from Vladimir Klitschko.
00:10:31And he's been very philosophical and sentimental leading up to this, talking about not only
00:10:36what he wants to do in boxing, but his former trainer, Bill Slayton, who passed away last year.
00:10:40He says, every time I step in the ring, I'm fighting with his memory in mind.
00:10:44An extremely outgoing, affable guy, very philosophical, spiritual, remains totally inspired by, as Al pointed
00:10:53out, his late trader and father figure, Bill Slayton.
00:10:56But, you know, it's got to be a concern as he's being checked out by Jay Nady.
00:10:59When you see that he's lost to guys like Charles Shuford and Clifford Etienne, although Brewster
00:11:06attributes those defeats to an injured knee.
00:11:09He hurt his knee in the first round, tore it up against Clifford Etienne.
00:11:13And so he says, that's what you've got to blame on those losses.
00:11:16And if there's one element missing, it might be that he did not create excitement in this
00:11:21arena when he came in.
00:11:22But, of course, he would probably say, that's still to come if I can put together one or
00:11:26two performances that inspire the fans.
00:11:29Yeah.
00:11:29The knock on him has been an underachieving through the years.
00:11:34And we'll see if he can knock that away.
00:11:38Let's check the numbers as we go to the tail of the tape.
00:11:40The champion, Brewster, three years younger than me, and the 6'5 Meehan, a five-inch height
00:11:45advantage, but just an inch and a half edge in reach.
00:11:47At Thursday's weigh-in, Brewster, 227.
00:11:50Some feel he should have come in a little lighter, Meehan up nine pounds from his last
00:11:55fight.
00:11:55The rules, no standing eight, no three knocked down.
00:11:57A fighter can't be saved by the bell in any round.
00:12:00If an accidental headbutt occurs before the end of the fourth, it's a no decision.
00:12:04If it happens after the end of round four, they go to the scorecard.
00:12:07So here at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, we're getting ready for our main event, Lehman

00:15:03Please welcome the Australian and Pan-Pacific Heavyweight Champion.

00:15:35His weight, 227 pounds.
00:15:38His record, 30 wins, 2 losses, 27 big wins, coming by way of knockout.
00:15:46Ladies and gentlemen, tonight he is making the first defense of his title.
00:15:51Please welcome the WBO Heavyweight Champion of the World.
00:15:56Introducing, Relentless, Layman Brewster.
00:16:03Once again, Jay Nady is our referee in charge.
00:16:11Now to give the structure, 12 rounds of boxing scheduled.
00:16:17Fighters come center, please.
00:16:20Fighters come center.
00:16:30Okay.
00:16:31Okay.
00:16:33Do you have any questions?
00:16:36We have 12 rounds.
00:16:37Obey my commands.
00:16:39Let's go to work.
00:16:41Touch up.
00:16:47First title defense for Layman Brewster.
00:16:50First title shot for Colleen Meehan.
00:16:52Two very good friends.
00:16:53But all that goes out the window when they get into the ring.
00:16:56Brewster says everybody, including Meehan, expects him to storm in, winking bombs.
00:17:00But he said it'll be more of a chess match.
00:17:02Round your eggs, round your eggs, round your eggs.
00:17:03Meehan, he said, isn't Vladimir Klitschko, whom he fought at a brisk pace, knowing his
00:17:08heart and stamina for the record.
00:17:1013 of Brewster's 27 knockouts in the first round.
00:17:14We're set to go.
00:17:15Layman Brewster in the gold with the black.
00:17:20Callie Meehan in the blue with the gold.
00:17:23All right.
00:17:24Callie Meehan in the blue with the gold.
00:17:27These first couple of rounds vital for Callie Meehan.
00:17:30Can he establish anything?
00:17:31Can he not get hit with something big?
00:17:33As we've pointed out, there's one major moment in boxing against Danny Williams who's knocked
00:17:37out in 32 seconds in the first round.
00:17:41And so he needs to get through these rounds.
00:17:42That was the second punch of the fight.
00:17:44And then when he got up again, the third punch of the fight.
00:17:48That sent Meehan down.
00:17:49Two big right hands.
00:17:50And, of course, it's the left hook that Meehan is concerned about here.
00:17:53He didn't wait a moment when we asked him what concerns you most about Brewster.
00:17:58He said, the left hook.
00:17:59Not much happening, as you can see, on the crowd getting on these two guys.
00:18:04Right now, they're fighting as if they are good friends.
00:18:09Well, Brewster decided, as you pointed out, that he said, I think Callie Meehan thinks I'm
00:18:14going to rush in and throw that left hook.
00:18:15So I want to surprise him and not do that.
00:18:17Of course, the whole point is, it's possible that while he may know you're going to do
00:18:21it, that may be your best hope for Victor.
00:18:23So it might still be the thing to do.
00:18:26Well, Brewster, although you wouldn't know it by this display here, is physically strong.
00:18:30He does have the big left hook, as Al alluded to.
00:18:33Tremendous will and resolve.
00:18:35He can take a punch.
00:18:37Leaky defense.
00:18:38Can't be outworked.
00:18:39And sometimes questionable judgment.
00:18:43So far, this is the complete opposite of Corey Spinks.
00:18:47Well, very few punches being thrown.
00:18:50Me and throwing the right hand.
00:18:53Brewster doing almost nothing.
00:18:55Leayman Brewster is, at best, a boxer puncher, not a boxer.
00:18:58And he's staying on the outside, where, you know, he has a good jab, and it's underused,
00:19:05and he hasn't used that punch at all yet.
00:19:08Not exactly sure what he's waiting for.
00:19:12And the crowd pretty much feels the same way.
00:19:15The interesting thing is that while Brewster has done very little offensively, Me and also has.
00:19:20So he has not taken advantage of this slow start or subdued start, if you will, by Leayman Brewster.
00:19:27There it goes.
00:19:28There's a hook by Brewster.
00:19:29The left hook, and now Brewster goes to work.
00:19:32The chest back is over, at least for the moment.
00:19:35Nice counter right by Me and off the ropes.
00:19:39And there you saw what Brewster's capable of when he puts his punches together.
00:19:44Probably a sigh of relief from Kelly Me and when that happened in the Williams fight, he was already out.
00:19:49So he's ahead of the game there anyway.
00:19:52Way beyond 32 seconds.
00:19:56And that flurry may have won Brewster the round.
00:19:59Final seconds of the opening round, a very boring one for the most part, except for one flurry by Leayman Brewster.
00:20:13And the crowd continues to show its dismay, but finally, a punch offered by Vianette LeBell.
00:20:21Let's go to Jim Gray.
00:20:23All right, Steve, I'm here with the IBF heavyweight champion of the world, Chris Bird.
00:20:26Chris, are you here doing a little scouting tonight on Brewster?
00:20:30No, not really.
00:20:31I've seen Leayman fight a lot.
00:20:34You know, as a professional, he's a great fighter.
00:20:37You know, the win over Klitschko was amazing, and he's here in the heavyweight division.
00:20:42We hear a lot of rumors that there might be some sort of a round robin, a tournament.
00:20:46Is there anything that you can add to that?
00:20:47Is that true?
00:20:48Will there be a tournament to unify these belts?
00:20:50Well, I hope so.
00:20:51You know, that's the goal for me, is to unification.
00:20:55So hopefully, you know, the other champions, we all can get together and fight and see
00:21:00who's the best heavyweight in the world is.
00:21:01Chris, do you think people somewhat duck you because of your style?
00:21:04Yeah, you know, they've been ducking me for a long time, a lot of the top heavyweights.
00:21:09But, you know, my last two fights were a little controversial.
00:21:13You know, they say I'm slipping a little bit, which is good.
00:21:16Hopefully, the guys come out and fight me now.
00:21:18Chris, thank you.
00:21:19We appreciate it.
00:21:20We look forward to your next fight.
00:21:21Thank you very much.
00:21:22All right, Steve, back to you.
00:21:23Thanks, Jim.
00:21:23Chris Bird, John Ruiz, Vitaly Klitschko, the other heavyweight champions.
00:21:28FYI, Don King promotes all but WBC champ Klitschko, so it could be very tough to get
00:21:34Vitaly to participate.
00:21:37Brewster, by the way, said Klitschko's last opponent, Corey Sanders, looked like Elvis
00:21:41in his last concert.
00:21:43Alluding to Sanders' weight, I would have to say.
00:21:47An appropriate Las Vegas comment, since we're here.
00:21:51Well, round two, nothing much happened in round one.
00:21:54A lot of booing by the fans.
00:21:58Brewster said that when they sparred, he was actually stunned by a chopping right hand by
00:22:03Kelly Meehan.
00:22:04Of course, that's with bigger gloves.
00:22:05So he feels that Meehan does have some power in that right hand.
00:22:10There's a little blood from the nose, I think, of Lehman Brewster.
00:22:16Did that happen during the ring walk?
00:22:19Perhaps in the corner.
00:22:21Well, Meehan may have landed a jab somewhere in there.
00:22:23I guess he did somewhere along the line of round one.
00:22:27He only threw about one or two punches.
00:22:29And there is a jab from Meehan.
00:22:31He's targeting that nose.
00:22:35Meehan basically relies on brute strength and size.
00:22:39And as Al said, in sparring, Brewster said he's felt Meehan's right hand from time to time.
00:22:44But not a lot of movement, as you can see.
00:22:46A very rigid, mechanical European style.
00:22:49Very good target.
00:22:50But so far, Lehman Brewster laying back.
00:22:54See Brewster wearing that brace on his left knee.
00:22:56That came from an injury in his fight with Clifford at the end several years ago.
00:23:01Feels it's repaired, but he wears the brace just for comfort.
00:23:06He said, you know, just to give him confidence that when he does something, he's not going to hurt that knee again.
00:23:11It's all precautionary.
00:23:12He does feel 100% healthy, he told us.
00:23:17He said that was the first time in a fight where his ego got the best of him when he brawled with Etienne.
00:23:24Well, if Lehman Brewster wants to make a statement, this is not the way to do it.
00:23:29At least at this point, unless he's planning something.
00:23:33But I'll tell you what, he's really bleeding from the nose now.
00:23:35Really.
00:23:36Well, Lehman Brewster is not by trade a fancy boxer.
00:23:40He could be at best, as I said, a boxer puncher.
00:23:42So for him to have this strategy against a big, tall fighter, it's not going to produce an appealing fight and not one in which he'll get much done.
00:23:50He could do this for a while and then go after a knockout, of course.
00:23:53But why not go after it in some fashion, at least early?
00:23:56There's a lot of blood coming from that nose.
00:23:58It's interesting.
00:23:59Whatever did happen created an issue there, that's for sure.
00:24:02And probably one of those jams by Lehman.
00:24:04I guess this is Kelly Meehan's round, maybe.
00:24:16Another awful round.
00:24:22You stand him on the end.
00:24:24You've got to get closer.
00:24:26You know, the boy can't hit you.
00:24:27You can see that.
00:24:28You're boxing beautifully, but you're not doing enough.
00:24:31Don't blow, don't blow.
00:24:32Don't blow.
00:24:33Way through your mouth.
00:24:33Way through your mouth, baby.
00:24:35You've got to get him to establish a jab.
00:24:37He can't touch you, but don't let him get the momentum.
00:24:40So close the gap more.
00:24:41Close the gap, okay?
00:24:43You're letting him get a little confident.
00:24:45Okay.
00:24:45Okay?
00:24:46Now, we didn't establish that.
00:24:47He can't hit you with nothing.
00:24:49Now, we've got to start letting our hands go, okay?
00:24:51Let our hands go.
00:24:53You know, when you get close to him and you hear him start letting your hands go, you're hurting.
00:24:56But if you're not letting him go, he's going to get, you know, get brave, huh?
00:25:01So let's not let that happen.
00:25:03So start giving him your punches.
00:25:07The words in Brewster's corner, you're not doing enough, the understatement of the year.
00:25:23I'll tell you what.
00:25:26Unless things pick up, this is another reason why a guy like Mike Tyson has a shot at the title despite his recent loss.
00:25:35At least he's active and he hits hard.
00:25:40And he puts people in the seats.
00:25:42Well, it's why it makes him an attraction for sure.
00:25:45Whether he'll win the title remains to be seen.
00:25:47But, yeah, it's why people are at least interested in him.
00:25:49Well, the blood continues to come out of the nose of Raymond Brewster there.
00:25:54His nose was bloodied early in round two.
00:25:58Brewster, you know, what they told him in his corner is accurate in many respects.
00:26:03He slipped a lot of punches by Kelly Meehan, even as he's coming in.
00:26:07So he has certainly shown that.
00:26:09Now it's time to simply open up with punches.
00:26:11And you see he's starting to use the jab.
00:26:12Only a one-inch difference in reach.
00:26:14So despite the height that Kelly Meehan has, it's not that the jab of Brewster couldn't get in.
00:26:19And there's the hook that stunned Kelly Meehan.
00:26:22So it's a matter of punching, isn't it?
00:26:27The left hook predominantly being used here in this sequence by Brewster.
00:26:32See, and if you look at what Raymond Brewster just did, those punches were all delivered effectively.
00:26:37They were delivered in combination.
00:26:39He's a capable fighter.
00:26:40He just needs to do it.
00:26:42He has been a capable fighter since his amateur days when he was almost an Olympian.
00:26:47But he has moments when he just is an underachiever.
00:26:51And now, we said it earlier, to increase his marketability, he's got to come out and be more entertaining.
00:26:58There's just no question about it.
00:27:00And he's got a sitting duck in front of him.
00:27:04There you go.
00:27:06That's what the people want to say, but Meehan comes back.
00:27:10Brewster landing those hooks to the body and the head.
00:27:12That left hook is certainly his calling card.
00:27:14That and the jab is best weapons.
00:27:16And Meehan surviving that.
00:27:19And then digging shots to the stomach.
00:27:25Big confidence, Brewster, and away from Meehan to get past what he's gotten past here in round three,
00:27:30despite the fact that he's certainly losing the round.
00:27:33And now opening up a bit.
00:27:36Meehan smothering his own punches, though, not giving himself room to punch.
00:27:39He needs a little more leverage.
00:27:41He needs to step back.
00:27:44Brewster's punchers have more impact, more power.
00:27:47Watch your head.
00:27:48Both men committed to the body.
00:27:57And there's a beautiful right hand by Brewster downstairs.
00:28:00Now Brewster goes upstairs.
00:28:02But some of those punches, most of them blocked.
00:28:04Good exchanges here in round three, so things have certainly changed.
00:28:13And it's become at least a bit more competitive here in the third.
00:28:16The Meehan family on hand.
00:28:25Wife Rowena.
00:28:27Sons Lewis, Willis, and Isaac.
00:28:29Come a long way to Las Vegas.
00:28:32Hey, we have a future fighter in the family.
00:28:34Beautiful work, mate.
00:28:34Beautiful work.
00:28:35You've just got to set that right hand up a bit more, okay?
00:28:38Set that right hand up and get a bit more aggro with it.
00:28:41But let him work.
00:28:42He's working hard, okay?
00:28:44Breathing.
00:28:45Wife Rowena.
00:28:45Brewster willing to step in and get some work done, most of it with the left hook.
00:28:52He throws the right, but then comes back immediately with the left hook.
00:28:55He's got an excellent left hook.
00:28:56And you'll see he'll rip it to the body and the head.
00:28:58He gets good leverage, especially when he throws it to the body.
00:29:01And Meehan holding on there, perhaps stunned momentarily, but he's able to get past this
00:29:06and even have a few moments for himself.
00:29:09But Brewster, on the inside, working very well.
00:29:11Those are nice combinations, and several of those punches landed.
00:29:16Brewster can be outworked, as we have seen, can be slow and deliberate.
00:29:21And if he is at a slugfest, if this turns into a brawl, he does get hit a lot.
00:29:26He often leads with his chin and can make a target practice for his opponent.
00:29:32But he can absorb a lot of punishment as well.
00:29:34He's really got a big heart.
00:29:36But he's got to press forward and be more consistent here and put a show on for this crowd.
00:29:41You know, Brewster said the Klitschko fight he knew is a fight of endurance.
00:29:44He knew he was going to get ahead.
00:29:45He also felt confident that Klitschko would fold in four or five runs.
00:29:50And, of course, that happened.
00:29:51He doesn't think Kelly Meehan will do that.
00:29:54And he said, this is a fight more about showing skills.
00:29:56So, in some ways, it's almost as if Brewster is pacing himself.
00:30:01And, of course, that can be a problem.
00:30:03Yeah, it's almost a catch-22.
00:30:06You can't win over the public by doing that.
00:30:09But it may be the smart thing to do.
00:30:13And, you know, Bill Slayton told him to be smart.
00:30:17Good right hand by Meehan and a missed left hook by Brewster.
00:30:20And, of course, people question Brewster's conditioning from time to time.
00:30:23As you pointed out, so I'm wondering if he's carrying a little too much weight for this fight, as he has in recent fights.
00:30:30So, we'll get that answer if this fight does, in fact, get into some of the later rounds.
00:30:35Yeah, he's about the same weight he was for the Vladimir Klitschko fight.
00:30:40Well, Meehan is almost 10 pounds more than he was for his last fight.
00:30:46Here's a jab from Brewster.
00:30:47It's a good punch.
00:30:48It is underused by him.
00:30:51Meehan's fighting like he's just happy to be here.
00:30:54Brewster should be fighting like he wants to put this guy away real soon.
00:30:59Well, Meehan now is starting to throw his own left hooks.
00:31:01Now, that's a...
00:31:01Oh, and there's a left hook.
00:31:02Oh, right hand.
00:31:03That's a dangerous move by Meehan to throw the hook, though, because he can be countered by Brewster's hook.
00:31:09He's having his moments now, Meehan.
00:31:11Yeah, this is the best sequence of the fight for Cali Meehan.
00:31:16It was a 10-to-100 guy.
00:31:18Hands, watch your hands.
00:31:19The blood seems to be under control from Brewster's nose.
00:31:37That was a little over there, Layman.
00:31:40Combination to the body by Brewster.
00:31:42He's done pretty good work downstairs the last couple of rounds.
00:31:54Right hand out of nowhere by Meehan.
00:31:57Kelly Meehan has some hand speed.
00:32:00He's not without hand speed.
00:32:01And he also understands how to counter.
00:32:03You've seen that in this round.
00:32:08Well, the best round of the fight for Cali Meehan.
00:32:12It's starting to come to you.
00:32:28Strong head, mate.
00:32:29Strong, strong mind.
00:32:30Strong mind.
00:32:30This title's yours.
00:32:31This title's yours.
00:32:32You want it?
00:32:33You want it bad, mate.
00:32:34Let's get that title, OK?
00:32:36Be strong.
00:32:37Be tight in close.
00:32:37You're getting a bit sloppy in range, OK?
00:32:39So be tight in range.
00:32:40When you're in range, be nice and tight and nice and sharp, OK?
00:32:45And he's getting sloppy with his punches, too.
00:32:47But he's going to have a big hook in there somewhere.
00:32:49So be sharp.
00:32:49Keep that right hand up.
00:32:51And when you let him go, you can start letting him go in twos and threes now, OK?
00:32:55We're in round five.
00:32:56Coming up round five.
00:32:58Let's take his heart out, OK?
00:33:00Use your mental strength, Cali.
00:33:01Think about them hills up on the bloody coast.
00:33:03We're not going to top the hill yet.
00:33:04We're not going to top the hill.
00:33:05Let's go.
00:33:06Shut up.
00:33:10Almost in Hollywood-spent fashion, Mark Jansen, in the face of Cali B.
00:33:19Speaking of Hollywood, in the corner of Lehman Brewster is his manager, Sam Simon, who just
00:33:24happens to be the creator of The Simpsons.
00:33:27Unbelievable.
00:33:27Round five, scheduled for 12 for the WBO Heavyweight Championship.
00:33:34You know, one of the things Mark Jansen told Cali Bihon was pretty accurate.
00:33:39Brewster was getting a little wider and a little sloppy with some of his punches already in that
00:33:43last round.
00:33:43And it gave Meehan a chance to counter several times.
00:33:4723 of Meehan's 29 wins by knockout.
00:33:51He's known for power in Australia.
00:33:53Won his first 23 fights before that loss to Danny Williams.
00:33:586-0 since the loss with five knockouts.
00:34:00If you wanted to take the cynical view of Lehman Brewster, it would be that he won his title
00:34:06because, as you see the scoring, which, by the way, mirrors my scoring, 38-38, the cynical
00:34:12view would be that he won it because Vladimir Klitschko just got tired, and that's the basic
00:34:18fact.
00:34:19Well, if that's the case, he'll have some problems tonight, then.
00:34:23And that's the cynical view of Brewster, and to some degree, this performance tonight
00:34:27plays into that hand.
00:34:30Cali Bihon, with more confidence, landing with the jab.
00:34:33Doesn't follow it up, though.
00:34:34One and done.
00:34:35But Brewster just standing there.
00:34:37Bihon's having a good fifth round.
00:34:45At least good by the standards they've set here.
00:34:49Stop.
00:34:49Stop.
00:34:50Let go.
00:34:50Step back.
00:34:51Step back, Klien.
00:34:51Now Bucks.
00:34:55Brewster right now not making it happen.
00:34:59He's letting Lehman come to him.
00:35:05For Brewster to be really effective in this fight, he needs to press forward because he
00:35:10needs to land hooks to the body and the head.
00:35:12That's his major calling card.
00:35:14It's the punch will work.
00:35:15And you see from that distance, he can't land that looping left hook against a taller fighter.
00:35:19It's just not going to happen.
00:35:20It was just whisked away by the arm of Meehan.
00:35:24So the idea is jab your way in, take three steps in, and when you're right in front of
00:35:28him on his chest, that's when you rip those hooks.
00:35:30And that's the blueprint, basically.
00:35:32And it's a blueprint that Brewster told us he really was not going to use.
00:35:35And he hasn't.
00:35:36There's a good body shot at digging left on Meehan.
00:35:40And he landed that punch well.
00:35:42Brewster tried to counter him with the hook, but just barely missed.
00:35:45So it's a dangerous move for Meehan, but he was able to get away with it.
00:35:49Brewster now looking very lethargic and telegraphing his punches and getting hit a lot.
00:35:54And, you know, these are the same punches that Klitschko was landing against Brewster.
00:36:02Of course, he's a more powerful fighter than Meehan and a better combination punch.
00:36:06Well, another pretty good round for Kali Meehan.
00:36:21A very concerned Jelana Brewster, the wife of Lehmann.
00:36:32You shut him down.
00:36:34But you're waiting, you're waiting.
00:36:35You're looking for the big shot.
00:36:37Yes, sir.
00:36:38Okay.
00:36:39Start working.
00:36:40Start working inside.
00:36:42Start letting your hand.
00:36:43When you slide up, touch him with one.
00:36:45Slide up, touch him with two.
00:36:46Slide up, make him punch, slide over, hit him with something.
00:36:50You hear what I'm saying?
00:36:52You got to make him work.
00:36:53He's a basic fighter.
00:36:55One, two.
00:36:56One, two.
00:36:56One, two, three.
00:36:57Hey.
00:36:59Make him work.
00:37:01Okay?
00:37:01Make him work.
00:37:03And then the fight is turn around.
00:37:05And we'll go home early.
00:37:06Okay?
00:37:06Don't pull out.
00:37:07Make him go home.
00:37:07Okay?
00:37:08I'm sorry.
00:37:08I'm sorry.
00:37:09I'm sorry.
00:37:09I'm sorry.
00:37:09Okay?
00:37:10Work.
00:37:10Let your hands go, Chief.
00:37:14Once again, Shadiq Saluki with the right words.
00:37:18But can Lehman Brewster do it?
00:37:20You know, when Brewster sparred with, when Brewster, yeah, sparred with Kelly Meehan, Meehan, of course, was emulating Vladimir Klitschko.
00:37:30Well, Meehan saw Klitschko basically win virtually every round against Brewster by doing this, throwing jabs at straight right hands.
00:37:38And now he is getting after Brewster.
00:37:40Meehan's got Brewster in a little trouble here against the ropes.
00:37:42Meehan is smothering his punches.
00:37:49He needs to give himself punching room.
00:37:52Brewster down only one time in his career against Vladimir Klitschko when he was caught on the temple and not really hurt.
00:37:58And Meehan is taking it to Brewster here in round six.
00:38:05You're holding.
00:38:06You can't hit.
00:38:09But you're right, Al.
00:38:10If he just takes a step back and fires, he might have better success, just like right there.
00:38:17Look on that arm.
00:38:20He is using the Klitschko blueprint.
00:38:22Stay back with jabs at straight right hands.
00:38:24That's what got Brewster over here in trouble.
00:38:26Unheralded Polly Mayhem coming into Las Vegas here and looking to take a share of the heavyweight title.
00:38:35No hole.
00:38:37Unbelievable.
00:38:38Would it be a second straight 10-to-1 underdog to win this WBO title?
00:38:42That would be fairly extraordinary.
00:38:44From the category, here we go again.
00:38:46Well, how long has Lehman Brewster been up against the ropes there?
00:38:59It's been over a minute.
00:39:01That is not where you want to be.
00:39:04He did get an uppercut in, but back comes Mann.
00:39:07But again, not enough leverage.
00:39:12You know, even though he has smothered his own punches, Meehan is leaning on Brewster.
00:39:18And he's a bigger man making him tired.
00:39:20So while he didn't land a lot of big punches, he also prevented Brewster from landing over there.
00:39:24Yeah, he's 6'5", 236.
00:39:26So that has to wear on you.
00:39:27Here's another left hand.
00:39:28Parsley blocked.
00:39:29But it sent Brewster back to the ropes again.
00:39:31If Lehman Brewster is right in his assessment of Meehan and he won't tire out,
00:39:36Lehman Brewster better get working.
00:39:38Because Brewster is looking a little tired right now.
00:39:41Meehan's got to be wearing Brewster out with those body shots.
00:39:44You know the old adage, take the body, then the head.
00:39:49He's got to be taking Brewster's legs out with this stuff.
00:39:53And they have got to be upset in Brewster corner.
00:39:56Now here's a moment for Brewster.
00:39:57He's got Meehan against ropes.
00:39:59He should be ripping left hooks to the body and the head.
00:40:01And he's not.
00:40:03Instead, he's very lethargic there.
00:40:05There's a left hook and a right combinations.
00:40:08Unanswered by Meehan.
00:40:10Meehan breathing heavily now and going back.
00:40:12And Brewster going to work.
00:40:16Well done to the 6.
00:40:18Go!

00:40:34work okay don't let him stay in that sweet spot breathe in breathe in breathe in nice and controlled
00:40:43mate nice and controlled this is where your mind's got to come into it be strong mentally
00:40:47come on be strong mentally in the beginning of this round cali man got a lot done against
00:40:53lamb and brewster sending him against the ropes hurting him with some good shots and
00:40:58then keeping him pinned against the ropes it seemed forever some of these missing but
00:41:04obviously some body punches landing and he leaned on brewster landed a lot of good punches but
00:41:09me and may have punched himself out and layman brewster got busy in the last 45 seconds and hurt
00:41:16cali mia layman brewster has not been past the sixth round in four years
00:41:24as cali man looks to become the first australian-based boxer to win a heavyweight title
00:41:36he is from new zealand originally but lives in australia
00:41:40and how much did that last 30 seconds of the round turn this fight around
00:41:49it won't if layman brewster is passive as he's been for so much of this fight
00:41:56round seven scheduled for 12 for the wbo heavyweight crown
00:42:02they're missing with the big right
00:42:05and the last time mehan was past eight past this distance was in december of 2001
00:42:17there's the press row scoring it's still tight one has it even that's graham houston from boxing monthly
00:42:26i have me in ahead by two points in this fight
00:42:33maybe it's time for brewster to start doing what mehan expects
00:42:45and that's just to go in there and start winging bombs
00:42:50and interestingly when brewster has done that he has stunned cali mia on a couple of different occasions
00:42:55he had him holding on doesn't seem like he has much to lose and is it a stamina issue for brewster
00:43:00and mehan continues to breathe real heavy
00:43:03he looks like he might be having a bit of a breathing problem
00:43:12but brewster not taking advantage instead it's mehan who lands the jab
00:43:18when mehan throws the jab in the straight right hand and klitschko showed it you can hit layman brewster with that combination if you're a big tall fighter
00:43:25there's no mistake about it six foot five brewster continues to be out at work
00:43:35he's handing this round to cali mia i mean he really is
00:43:40and look he has me in a position where he could attack him against the ropes and brewster just lethargic and not doing it
00:43:46mehan did tell us in the media yesterday his jab is his best weapon although brewster thought it was his right
00:43:53and the jab is getting in now
00:43:55and the blood once again coming out of the nose of brewster
00:44:00mehan look how low his hands are but he's scoring with the left
00:44:08look how low his left hand is and brewster cannot take him in
00:44:14all you need is an overhand right
00:44:16that's the way where's that cold water and the bucket and the sponge too carly
00:44:27dead beautiful work mate boxing from the outside like that you can steal every single round for the rest of the fight like that okay
00:44:34and then have a have a bit of a flurry every now and again that's it you don't have to flurry all the time you don't have to stay in there you only tire yourself okay
00:44:42so just boxing nice and sharp while they open their minds up let's be the champion let's be sharp okay
00:44:47let's be sharp galley you're winning it mate you're on top you win every round from now on you can win every round it's round eight coming up all right round eight how easy is that
00:44:56championship of the world man we got to start letting our hands go man this this boy's no class
00:45:02not even in our same class you know you're making the moves but you're not letting your hands go
00:45:07you're not letting your hands go you got to let your hands go okay let them go
00:45:12a sense of urgency in the brewster corner and over in the
00:45:17meand corner boy it really sounds like they're starting to believe
00:45:22you know layman brewster is as about as engaging and interesting young man as you will ever meet
00:45:28and he talks about the passion he has for the sport of boxing but sometimes it doesn't show up in the ring
00:45:36and it hasn't tonight but mark jansen over in the corner of meand he's got some passion doesn't he
00:45:44and he wants to make his fighter believe and understand that what he's doing is perfect doesn't
00:45:50need to change technically just keep doing it and he's got to convince him that he can win this title if
00:45:55he keeps doing it county man continues to box from the outside and continues to score like that two
00:46:02three in a row unanswered punches there's the jab that gets through the gloves the interesting thing
00:46:07is and it's really spooky he looks like how he must have looked impersonating vladimir kitzko
00:46:14when he's sparring except he's doing it more aggressively with smaller gloves and with conviction
00:46:20because he's not a sparring partner you see the record past seven and it favors me and right now
00:46:29oh man brewster's hurt yeah he's got him temporarily stunned and he's got a terrible place layman brewster
00:46:38a racking right doubling up tripling up on the rights brewster trying to counter with the left hook
00:46:52will me and crunch himself out as he did a little bit in one of those earlier rounds my what about
00:46:57brewster's exhausted right now rubbery legs this has been his time a right uppercut to the jaw
00:47:05brewster's ready to go he's being held up by the ropes
00:47:11he's being held up by the ropes but no knockdown
00:47:17heavy right hands by carly man looking for the upset and the title
00:47:2248 seconds for boosters oh what a shot the ropes continue to hold brewster up
00:47:34and he finally gets out of there now he's back
00:47:38and he still has 35 seconds he's gotten pummeled
00:47:47unbelievable
00:47:53leon throwing bombs but back comes brewster showing amazing heart
00:47:58only those hooks by brewster have kept him in the fight
00:48:08he's got five seconds to make it through this eighth round amazing
00:48:14he's all right
00:48:24hold him your fight he's all right he's all right he's all right he's all right he's okay he's okay
00:48:34he's okay he's okay he's okay you're all right he's all right hey hey you all right
00:48:41well kelly mehan drove layman brewster to the ropes with that very sharp right hand it stunned him
00:48:48brewster retreated me and understood and this time when me and adam in trouble he didn't totally smother
00:48:54his punches he's he stayed back far enough and even mixed in the uppercut now he held and he hit on
00:49:02that and didn't get a warning from jane 80 but it was very effective shades of lennox lewis
00:49:08and he kept whacking him with right hands it was astonishing how many right hands layman brewster
00:49:14took while he was flush against those ropes the left side of brewster's head is really swollen dr
00:49:21margaret goodman was in there to see if brewster was able to continue they said he's all right
00:49:27they know his history they know what happened let's go fight now here's brewster looking to turn
00:49:32it on in round nine after taking a whooping a beating in round eight really how did layman brewster
00:49:39stand up i mean it was staggering he got hit with about 12 flush right hands it was cause you could have
00:49:47called a knockdown that's right you're absolutely correct because the ropes were keeping him up
00:49:51but janey let it go yeah and i scored that a two point round for kelly mehan i don't know how you
00:49:59couldn't i agree even without a knockdown being steps back takes a huge breath and now let's talk
00:50:08about scoring we're in round eight here kelly mehan could be far enough in round nine excuse me we're
00:50:13he's far enough ahead that he might be able to win this fight just by hanging in there brewster is hoping
00:50:19like in the klitschko vladimir klitschko fight perhaps me and punched himself out now but not
00:50:25there there was another banging right hand on the ear jab straight right hand it's what you need to do
00:50:33to beat layman brewster and that is what kelly means doing how many times can you go to that strategy
00:50:38though how many times can you go to the proverbial well now he's against the ropes kelly mehan that's not
00:50:43where he wants to be and a moment ago mehan threw a uppercut from far back and almost got counted if
00:50:50i'm mark jansen i'm telling my guys throw nothing but jabs and straight right hands the press row guys
00:50:56have me in a head there's another right hand now me and smart he steps back he should stay on the outside
00:51:03box use the jab and periodically throw that right just like his corner wanted
00:51:09approaching the final minute of the night scheduled for 12 for the wbo heavyweight title
00:51:16i've got me in a head 78 73 so i have a little bigger margin
00:51:26there's a right hand up top well you got to climb high to get the towering mehan that one landed let's
00:51:32see if it starts a barrage by brewster and mehan's holding on yeah he got hurt from that one he felt
00:51:38the sting there's still some drama in this fight the last three rounds are going to let's do that
00:51:43rounds are going to be interesting less than 30 seconds in round nine brewster somehow surviving that
00:51:52mehan barrage and brown eight a series of right hands
00:52:01mehan again his hands down really low particularly that right
00:52:13now the luck really down low as well but brewster couldn't capitalize
00:52:21mehan barrage
00:52:26beautiful work mate we've got to work that mind now breathe in control your breathing control your
00:52:31breathing now you've got to sit you've got to sit and you've got to stay sharp okay you've got to
00:52:35stay sharp
00:52:39what's that song it's round 10 coming up counter counter him all night long you're ahead mate you're ahead
00:52:46you're winning this fight countering countering countering but be strong and be composed don't look
00:52:51tired and don't don't let your toddlers show okay he's twice as tired as you are mate okay
00:52:57sharp jab sharp jab jab simple stuff jab one two boxing from the outside jab jab right here
00:53:03you're a little busier he's tired don't let him rest take the work huh okay okay you got me no more jab
00:53:11mehan was asking his trainer mark jansen lead or counter he was asking him a question and jansen
00:53:22was replying counter counter
00:53:26it was interesting you know this this fight is what the heavyweight division is all about right now
00:53:34because it is two fighters who are not fighting a perfect technical or artistic fight but who are
00:53:40creating a an equal fight and one with its share of excitement whether it's all the critch goes
00:53:47battling back and forth with people or birding gulata you name the fight in the last
00:53:52a year and a half what we have are a bunch of equal heavyweights who are none of them are fighting great
00:53:57but they are just equal enough to create some exciting matches and now that's exactly what's happened here
00:54:02well to to sum it up not the uh the greatest talent in the world on display here but it's been
00:54:08entertaining it has been after a very slow start we have it has been wildly entertaining round 10 scheduled
00:54:15for 12. and not for a moment suggesting that these men are putting on a dazzling technical display but at
00:54:24moments they do
00:54:33being staying on the outside as his trainer suggested electing to counter but continues to use that to
00:54:41work the jab
00:54:44you know it's hard to imagine layman brewster not you know he may the scoring of the officials may be
00:54:49different it might be a very very close fight but i think the ends are ahead in this fight it's
00:54:55interesting brewster is still not showing the urgency of getting in there and trying to make something
00:55:00happen yeah the story uh here overriding story is brewster who upset vladimir klitschko to capture the
00:55:06title is just not getting the job done
00:55:08and for kelly mehan what he's showing us tonight is if he can be in a fight where he isn't hurt where he
00:55:24isn't overpowered by someone he can get some things done this is not to say that brewster may not pull
00:55:32this out somehow in dramatic fashion but right now i have to just question there's a big left hand
00:55:40that stunned me
00:55:46i mean you got to go back to what we were talking about earlier
00:55:49probably me and he's a guy who was just destroyed by danny williams in 32 seconds and now he may take
00:55:56the gunny meal title away from layman brewster let me it's it speaks to danny williams as an underachieving
00:56:00heavyweight the english people called him their buster douglas he showed us against tyson he's just
00:56:06that brewster
00:56:12brewster's having a better round here big end for brewster
00:56:20you see how you put them together with that fast the fast combinations in the threes that's what we
00:56:24got to do we got to put them together we got to hey we got to put them together in threes
00:56:30you got to put them together in threes baby you got to put them together in threes and folds
00:56:35you can't do one one the jab get there keeping hands up high because he's throwing a looping shot
00:56:40you got to bring keep your hands up high but as soon as you get there bang bang bang go okay don't
00:56:44wait on it now we need these rounds but we need to be busy huh busy busy not one
00:56:50in layman brewster's corner they want this kind of action when he gets in there they want him to put
00:56:57his punches together and there's a three punch combination that is superb and the last left hook
00:57:02sent cali me and back now here's the difference that's exactly like the combination he landed in the
00:57:08to knock out vladimir klitschko me and didn't go down that's precisely the combination brewster
00:57:14predicted that yeah he did indeed time is running out on the champion layman brewster in the gold black
00:57:22neither fighter have been has been the end of the championship rounds this is round 11.
00:57:27mian has never been past eight we reminded
00:57:35and that's another reason why mark jansen continuing to plead with his fighter and let him know you can
00:57:40do this because it's uncharted territory for him and in a championship fight no less on the biggest
00:57:46stage he's ever fought on give kelly me in this credit he's kept his poise throughout this fight in a
00:57:53great way now now he hasn't always been tested by brewster but he has on occasion
00:58:06year and a half ago kelly mehan was working as a garbage man and as a security guard and here he is
00:58:11in mandalay bay on national television fighting for the world championship and maybe becoming the first
00:58:18australian to win any version of a former house painter a lot of jobs he was going to go on a boat to
00:58:28become a fisherman when he was called back at the last minute to take a big fight and it got him back
00:58:34on track as far as his career was concerned and here he is moments away from a possible dream
00:58:39he's leading in the press row scoring though it would be a majority win at that point for him
00:58:48i have him four points ahead but of course it could be closer than that
00:58:52i mean bruce is just being bodily pushed back into his own turnbuckle and the crowd sensing something
00:58:58here from mehan once again brewster against the ropes both men are tired and steve they are both
00:59:05and that's the team and that's a big factor now if somebody can land something big maybe someone
00:59:09will go down but it's being the aggressor
00:59:18well it's an instant replay of a few rounds ago only on the other ropes
00:59:23come on guys but both guys seemingly have run out of gas
00:59:26and a pair of boxing gloves and a bible in the satchel pursuing his dream going to los angeles
00:59:46he got his dream when he beat brian america let's go but if he doesn't hurry up and do more of this
00:59:51that dream's going to end and every time he does he's effective was that enough for him to steal this
00:59:58round it might have been they remember the last part of rounds do you judges final seconds of the 11.
01:00:10boy brewster clipped on the top of the head with a right hand by mehan did brewster steal that round
01:00:21it's going to be three minutes to the heavyweight championship of the world three minutes now you
01:00:31know what this is going to be the best three minutes of your life carly this is counting on everything
01:00:36fiji new zealand australia wyom marivore everything counts on this carly and you can do it standing on
01:00:43your head you can do it standing on your head okay you gotta go get it you gotta go get it you can't
01:00:50put it in the judge's hands all right don't reach okay just stay low this is the 12th and last round
01:00:54coming stay right up his body okay he's hurt and just come up okay and use it use the rub to your
01:01:00advantage but you gotta use your jab you're sliding up but you're not you waiting ladies and gentlemen
01:01:04we're approaching the john allen
01:01:07i'll give mark jansen the newt rockney award on that one that was as good a speech as you'll find
01:01:20and they hug they don't touch gloves they embrace to begin the 12th and final you can say what you
01:01:26want but these two guys showing great sportsmanship as well and brewster coming out to do what they told
01:01:31him to this and your championships on the line you better land some punches and you better try and knock
01:01:36knock him out it will seem that layman brewster needs something very dramatic a knockout here to pull
01:01:43out this way but you just never know when you're the champion when you're the challenger like collie man
01:01:52you really have to win convincingly on points sometimes it's just so tough to take the title away
01:01:58for the champion well if this goes 12 rounds and you can't do that the decision is controversial in
01:02:05some fashion which i suspect it could be either way can you say the word rematch oh yeah well
01:02:15we've had a lot of controversial decisions here and in las vegas so we'll eagerly await this outcome
01:02:22if it goes the distance i have me in ahead by three points now but you can make a case that it's a lot
01:02:28closer than that kevin kevin aioli from the las vegas review journal has it even bram houston one up for
01:02:34brewster there you are so there's a draw right there and of course if the official judges see it
01:02:41a draw brewster hangs out of his his belt brewster got stunned there but nian doesn't have enough to go
01:02:47after him he just pushes him away
01:02:49well there's there's no sense of urgency whatsoever no sense of desperation no sense of outrage at all
01:02:59by layman brewster and now not only here when he means it most in the last round but not since the
01:03:04first round well he's done it only in spots and now he's hurt again by a right hand by me
01:03:08in spots layman brewster has been aggressive and effective but not enough not enough at least not
01:03:15in our view and mian goes back to work mian could be less than a minute away from a heavyweight
01:03:22championship believe it or not who would have thought it is possible and he continues to score
01:03:32stop stop man it looks like he's ready to collapse but hangs in there well so far around 12 appears
01:03:42to be mian's round there's i don't think there's much doubt about that he has landed the harder
01:03:46punches and more of them that i think is pretty much not in dispute unless brewster comes back big
01:03:52and there he starts to are there 20 seconds left in brewster's championship reign it is possible
01:03:58brewster trying to box he is so awkward that is he can't even begin to try and use lateral movement
01:04:03yet he wants to 10 seconds brewster now finally shows some desperation
01:04:13that's it that is it great fight oh brother
01:04:18cali mian's family standing by for the decision are there some moments some nervous people watching
01:04:32in australia right now where we have ted allen told us there has been tremendous support to listen
01:04:37the manager ted allen
01:04:54and layman brewster's wife very anxious moments from her
01:04:59that's sam simon
01:05:20a lot of people don't believe i belong here but i do
01:05:23that's not my job that's the judge's job
01:05:49it's the judge's job
01:05:53that's not my job
01:06:02yeah it was it was the lady brewster came in here he not only had to win he had to win convincingly
01:06:09we're not even sure he won yeah i had to switch my scouting up from here
01:06:21Come on boys!
01:06:23Here come Meehan, he's scared.
01:06:25Yes, yes sir!
01:06:27Yes, yes sir!
01:06:29One more, over here.
01:06:31Yes sir.
01:06:33Yes!
01:06:39Well, no matter what happens,
01:06:41Kali Meehan's won over a lot of fans.
01:06:43And even at age 34,
01:06:45has created perhaps
01:06:47a shot for another fight or something.
01:06:49All right, Kali.
01:06:51We are set for the decision.
01:06:53Let's go to our ring announcer,
01:06:55Jimmy Lennon Jr.
01:06:59Ladies and
01:07:01gentlemen, after 12 rounds
01:07:03of boxing, we have a
01:07:05split decision.
01:07:07Here are the score totals.
01:07:09Judge at ringside,
01:07:11Adelaide Byrd scores
01:07:13about 114 to
01:07:15113 in
01:07:17favor of Kali Meehan.
01:07:21Judge at ringside,
01:07:23Dave Moretti scores the
01:07:24bout
01:07:25114 to
01:07:27113 in
01:07:29favor of Lehmann Brewster.
01:07:33Judge at ringside,
01:07:35Nelson Vasquez scores the
01:07:36bout
01:07:37115 to
01:07:39113 in favor of
01:07:41the winner.
01:07:43And still champion,
01:07:45Relentless,
01:07:47Lehmann Brewster.
01:07:53So as we suspected,
01:07:55a controversial decision,
01:07:57you see the relief on the face
01:07:59of Brewster's wife.
01:08:01According to the official scorecards,
01:08:03Al Meehan needed to win that final round
01:08:05to win the fight.
01:08:06He did not do it.
01:08:07How do you figure?
01:08:08How do you figure?
01:08:09How do you figure?
01:08:10How do you figure he didn't win that last round?
01:08:11You can make the case it's a very close fight,
01:08:13but intriguing that he didn't win that last round.
01:08:16But, uh, no.
01:08:17It's interesting.
01:08:20So, a very, uh, controversial decision.
01:08:23Who thought it would even come to this?
01:08:25Most people thought that Brewster would,
01:08:27uh, would manhandle Colli Meehan,
01:08:29despite the size difference.
01:08:30Very close fight.
01:08:31Um, I thought Meehan did more,
01:08:34enough to win the fight,
01:08:35but clearly some of those rounds
01:08:37very, very close,
01:08:38and apparently most of the close rounds
01:08:40ended up going to Lehmann Brewster
01:08:42because of those flurries
01:08:43that he came, uh,
01:08:45that he got going at portions of the round.
01:08:47You heard the reaction from the, uh,
01:08:49very spirited, uh, crowd here
01:08:51at the Mandalay Bay.
01:08:52A lot of them disagreeing
01:08:53with the final results.
01:08:54Let's go up to Jim Gray in the ring.
01:08:57Jim.
01:08:58All right, Steve.
01:08:59They're having a conversation.
01:09:00Let's listen in here a second.
01:09:01That's what gentlemen do, man.
01:09:03That's the gentleman of the sport.
01:09:04I'm a gentleman of the sport.
01:09:05How Khali had gotten the decision.
01:09:07Thank God he didn't.
01:09:08I would have been shaking his hand
01:09:09and still been right here to support him
01:09:11because he fought hard.
01:09:12As I told you,
01:09:13all Australians,
01:09:14I never fought one.
01:09:15I never even seen one
01:09:16that didn't fight hard.
01:09:17So, hey man,
01:09:18I'm gonna go Hill after this.
01:09:19You just said,
01:09:20thank God he didn't get the decision.
01:09:21Do you feel that
01:09:22you deserve the decision?
01:09:23Yeah, I feel I deserve the decision
01:09:25because I pressed the issue
01:09:26after a couple of rounds.
01:09:28You know,
01:09:29I was boxing him,
01:09:30I was slipping,
01:09:31and a couple of shots was missing.
01:09:32But I started seeing that
01:09:34in order for me to be effective
01:09:35because he was getting his confidence,
01:09:36I had to start putting pressure on him
01:09:38and making him aware of my power.
01:09:40Kali?
01:09:41Yeah?
01:09:42Your reaction to this decision,
01:09:43did you feel as though you won the fight?
01:09:44First of all,
01:09:46man, I just want to thank God
01:09:47for giving me an opportunity
01:09:48to fight for a heavyweight title.
01:09:49That's right, Kali.
01:09:50And this man here,
01:09:51Mark Jansen, my trainer,
01:09:52if it wasn't for him,
01:09:53none of this would have happened.
01:09:54He put our team together a year ago.
01:09:56Did you think you won the fight?
01:09:58Well,
01:09:59it's not my job to judge a fight,
01:10:01it's my job to do my best,
01:10:02and he who's done his best
01:10:03has done enough.
01:10:04You know,
01:10:05if the fight went to me,
01:10:06I wouldn't think I lost it.
01:10:08If the fight went to Lehman,
01:10:09I can't say I think he lost it.
01:10:10Well, in your head,
01:10:11going into the final round,
01:10:12did you feel as though
01:10:13you were ahead going into the final round,
01:10:14and did you feel you won the final round?
01:10:16Yeah,
01:10:17in my corner on the 11th round,
01:10:18we felt that I was ahead slightly on points.
01:10:22But maybe someone wants a rematch,
01:10:24I don't know,
01:10:25because it's such a good fight, I think.
01:10:26I hope that the boxing public in America
01:10:29can look at me and say
01:10:31I'm worthy enough to be here
01:10:32because it means a lot to me.
01:10:33to perform well in the home of boxing in the world,
01:10:36which is America.
01:10:37Callie, let me ask you,
01:10:38you were a sparring partner
01:10:40before he fought against Klitschko,
01:10:43before he fought against Klitschko.
01:10:45Did you take Klitschko's package
01:10:47and basically get that down
01:10:49and still have the confidence
01:10:51to have the endurance
01:10:52unlike Klitschko did?
01:10:53Well,
01:10:54one thing I learned about Klitschko
01:10:55is he was ahead on the fight,
01:10:57he hurt Lehman,
01:10:58and it looked to me,
01:10:59I mean,
01:11:00it's up to himself what he says,
01:11:01but it looked to me like Klitschko
01:11:02and Klitschko gave up once he was tired.
01:11:04I mean,
01:11:05I wasn't going to give up,
01:11:06I wasn't going to give up.
01:11:07He hurt me,
01:11:08and I think the first round,
01:11:09second round,
01:11:10I wasn't going to give up.
01:11:11was he out in the eighth round
01:11:12and were you looking for Jay Nady,
01:11:13the referee,
01:11:14to step in and stop it?
01:11:15Oh, yeah, yeah.
01:11:16I was.
01:11:17Yeah, man, I had you there.
01:11:18I had you, man.
01:11:19I had him there,
01:11:20and I don't know what I did.
01:11:21I was thinking three things at once to do,
01:11:23either left, right, left, right,
01:11:24and go for the body,
01:11:25or trying to pull his hand down.
01:11:26I was thinking too many things at once,
01:11:28and the bell went,
01:11:30and he got away with it.
01:11:32But he's a great fighter,
01:11:33he's got a big heart.
01:11:34A lot of fighters would have gave up there.
01:11:35Terrific fight.
01:11:36Don, keep going on a good fight.
01:11:37We told everyone.
01:11:38Everyone said,
01:11:39oh, not everyone said,
01:11:40but I got the impression that people said,
01:11:42we talk so friendly to each other,
01:11:44we'll be a slow, sloppy, best friend fight.
01:11:46But now, you know,
01:11:47this is our sport,
01:11:48this is our game,
01:11:49and here's a throwback from the old fighters,
01:11:51and so am I in the sense that
01:11:53they always spoke well against each other,
01:11:54and they proved it in the ring,
01:11:55and that's what I tried to do here tonight,
01:11:56and so did Lama.
01:11:57Are you going to give him a rematch?
01:11:59We're going to talk to Don
01:12:00and see what Don wants to do, man.
01:12:02You know, I can't.
01:12:03Are you going to give him a rematch?
01:12:04I'll give him a rematch.
01:12:05If that's what the people want,
01:12:06and if that's what,
01:12:07first and foremost,
01:12:08my promoter,
01:12:09the greatest promoter of all time.
01:12:10We'll get to Don in just a moment.
01:12:11In the eighth round,
01:12:12this man had you out on your feet,
01:12:15countless punches to your left side of his head,
01:12:18his right punch.
01:12:20What is your response?
01:12:21How did you survive that?
01:12:22Well, man,
01:12:23it's all about heart determination,
01:12:24as I try to tell people.
01:12:26Excuse me.
01:12:27Excuse me.
01:12:28Excuse me.
01:12:29As I try to tell people.
01:12:30Here it is right here.
01:12:31As I try to tell people,
01:12:32you know,
01:12:33it's not about fighting from the pocket.
01:12:36I fight from my heart.
01:12:37That's why I wouldn't go down,
01:12:38because I'm in it to win it, man.
01:12:40I'm not in it just for the money, man.
01:12:41I'm in it to show that boxing is a gentleman's work.
01:12:44I'm here to show that people fight from heart
01:12:46and get great exciting fights like we did tonight.
01:12:49And you know,
01:12:50you get hit,
01:12:51you got that never die,
01:12:52never quit attitude, man.
01:12:53You know what I'm saying?
01:12:54Lamont,
01:12:55with all due respect,
01:12:56with all due respect to your opponent,
01:12:58this man wasn't ranked in the top 40 by any other organization
01:13:01except for the one that sanctioned this fight tonight.
01:13:03What does that say about where you stand as a heavyweight champion?
01:13:06That doesn't say anything.
01:13:07All that says is that.
01:13:08He's a great champion.
01:13:09Exactly.
01:13:10You can't judge a man by his ranking.
01:13:11Look at Corey Sanders when he fought Klitschko.
01:13:13What do they say about Corey?
01:13:14Corey Sanders, man,
01:13:15they didn't give him a chance.
01:13:16He beat Klitschko.
01:13:17Hey, man,
01:13:18this guy came in here trying to support his family,
01:13:20like Lehman Bruce tried to support his family.
01:13:22God protected us both.
01:13:23We both going to walk out of his ring tonight with our marbles.
01:13:26And that's what all the people want to see,
01:13:28two people who are going to get their best, win, lose, or draw.
01:13:30That's what the people really want, man.
01:13:32They don't care about who going to get in here,
01:13:33hit a guy with one shot,
01:13:35and the other guy lay down and get his check and go home.
01:13:37They want to see people who are going to fight toe-to-to-toe
01:13:39if that's what it comes to,
01:13:40and bring back this sport, man,
01:13:42and then be able to speak like gentlemen like me and Khali
01:13:44after the fight is over and give Don King the praise,
01:13:47the greatest promoter of all time.
01:13:48Let's look at the end of the fight right here.
01:13:49What's going through your mind here in this final round?
01:13:51What's going through my mind is please fall down.
01:13:54Please get tired.
01:13:55Please let's get this fight over with.
01:13:57No, seriously, the thing of it was is I said,
01:13:59hey, man, you know, I'm hitting this guy with some shots,
01:14:02but he's still there.
01:14:03He game the fight.
01:14:04I just kept telling myself be patient, be patient,
01:14:06because, you know, man,
01:14:07you don't want to go out there and shoot your wide on a guy.
01:14:09I did that.
01:14:10I lost the fight as a result of it.
01:14:12So it's just about being smart.
01:14:13It's not all the time about giving the audience what they want,
01:14:16because, man, if you shoot your wide and get knocked out,
01:14:19well, then audience ain't going to care nothing about you no way.
01:14:21Congratulations to you.
01:14:23All right.
01:14:25Terrific fight, Callie.
01:14:26Let's bring in Don King because, Don, you basically control this division.
01:14:31What will happen next now?
01:14:32Well, Lehman is going to give Holyfield a chance.
01:14:35Holyfield?
01:14:36Yes.
01:14:37Give Holyfield a chance.
01:14:38Give him another chance to see what he can do.
01:14:39Doesn't this man deserve another chance before Holyfield?
01:14:41Oh, he's definitely going to get a chance, you know what I mean?
01:14:44But, you know, we're going to say how it goes.
01:14:45Right now it looks like it's Holyfield in the making.
01:14:48And what happens with your other champions, John Ruiz and so forth?
01:14:51John Ruiz is fighting Galata.
01:14:53John Ruiz is fighting Galata, another white kid that wanted to change.
01:14:57And in America, that's what America is all about.
01:15:00Black and white and white working together works.
01:15:02And so you will see Andrew Galata fighting John Ruiz for the WBA.
01:15:07And you're going to bring in Chris Bird and make this a round, Robin?
01:15:09Chris Bird, he will be fighting right now.
01:15:12Jameel McCline.
01:15:13But they all will fight each other.
01:15:14But one thing I can say, I'm very proud of Callie Meehan.
01:15:17And like he said, the people of America and the rest of the world have to respect him
01:15:20because he came within a half breath of being the heavyweight champion of the world tonight.
01:15:24And it's just the thing here that we love you here, man.
01:15:27And I want to say this, I want to give our prayers to those who are down in the great state of Florida
01:15:31suffering from the Hurricane Francis.
01:15:33That is my home state now.
01:15:35And I'm working there with them.
01:15:36And I know this storm is really bad.
01:15:38So I'm praying that no one gets hurt and that this storm will pass on by for them.
01:15:41I also want to give out my prayers for Germany, for the tragedy, the terrorist tragedy that they had over there.
01:15:48That was Russia.
01:15:49I mean, in Russia.
01:15:50I'm sorry.
01:15:51Excuse me.
01:15:52That's why we worked so well together.
01:15:53In balsami Russia.
01:15:54You know what I mean?
01:15:55With Vladimir Putin and all.
01:15:56And thank God we got a man like George Walker Bush in the White House
01:15:59that would stop these terrorists from coming into our country.
01:16:02So, you know, four more years for George Walker Bush.
01:16:04All right, Don.
01:16:05And I'm sure that there is somebody out there who would have the same to say about Mr. Kerry.
01:16:10But we're not getting into a political speech here tonight.
01:16:12He's our president.
01:16:13The other man's running.
01:16:15Let's go back to Steve Albert.
01:16:17All right, Jim.
01:16:18That's all I'm saying about the terrorists.
01:16:19All right, Jim.
01:16:20Thanks very much.
01:16:22We'll take a look at the scourges.
01:16:24Layman Brewster escapes with a victory here tonight.
01:16:27They're the official judges' scorecards.
01:16:30You see that Adelaide Byrd had Meehan ahead by one point.
01:16:33Dave Moretti had Brewster ahead by one point.
01:16:35And then Nelson Vasquez had Brewster up by two.
01:16:38Interesting thing is it was 1-0-4-1-0-4 on two judges' scorecards going into the last round.
01:16:46Then 1-0-5-1-0-4 for Brewster on another card after 11.
01:16:50And Kali Meehan indeed had to come through with that last round, but he could not.
01:16:55There are the judges' scorecards.
01:16:57They vote split decision.
01:16:59And let's take a look at the press row scoring right now.
01:17:02David Avila had Meehan ahead by two.
01:17:05Graham Houston had it all even.
01:17:07And Kevin Aioli had Meehan ahead by one, 1-14 to 1-13.
01:17:12So they had Meehan winning the fight by majority decision.
01:17:17So a wild night here in Las Vegas.
01:17:20As Kali Meehan, a lot of people thought that Kali Meehan pulled this one out here tonight,
01:17:25but the judges went the other way.
01:17:27Well, I thought he won the fight.
01:17:29There were two key points, I think, that we need to note.
01:17:31Number one in that eighth round when he had Meehan Brewster in all kinds of trouble.
01:17:36And Meehan said it well.
01:17:37A fighter with less courage and less grit would have given up or gone down at that point.
01:17:41That's number one.
01:17:42But number two, and this is an important distinction here,
01:17:45the last round was, in fact, the deciding round on all the judges' scorecards.
01:17:50In other words, had Meehan won that last round, he would have won the fight.
01:17:53And I guess that's where I have some issues.
01:17:55I don't see how he didn't win the last round, honestly.
01:17:58Yeah.
01:17:59It did seem like he won the last round.
01:18:00I mean, I thought he won the last round.
01:18:01I thought he won at least two-thirds of that round that even had Brewster in some trouble.
01:18:04So it sets up what, to me, would be an intriguing fight between these two.
01:18:07But obviously we've been told that's not to be the case.
01:18:10Well, and I'm a little disheartened to hear that, you know, Evander Holyfield, great champion in his prime, of course.
01:18:19But a lot of people, including myself, think that he should retire, particularly after the James Toney fight.
01:18:25Will we see Holyfield and Laman Brewster?
01:18:28That remains to be seen.
01:18:29According to Don King, it's in the works.
01:18:31Final point on Corey Spinks' performance tonight?
01:18:33Yeah, Corey Spinks did exactly what he needed to do, even though he's against a 33-year-old former champion in a lighter weight division.
01:18:40He looked very, very impressive, sat down on his punches more, and I thought Corey Spinks gave exactly the performance he needed to show that he's the man in the welterweight division.
01:18:49All right, to Al, as we wind things down from Las Vegas, let's take a final look.
01:18:54And tonight's results in the co-feature, Corey Spinks was successful indeed defending his welterweight championship and beating former world champion Miguel Angel Gonzalez.
01:19:04And in the main event, which you just saw, in controversial fashion, Laman Brewster retained his WBO heavyweight crown against unheralded Calumetian of New Zealand and Australia.
01:19:16A very disputed decision indeed.
01:19:19A lot of folks thought that me and pulled it out.
01:19:21Before we say goodnight, let's give you another reminder of what's on the boxing horizon here on Showtime.
01:19:26Showbox, the new generation, returns Thursday, December, September 16th at 11 p.m.
01:19:31as Rico Suave Hoy battles former world champ Montel Ice Griffin in a 12-round light heavyweight bout.
01:19:38And then Saturday, October 2nd at 9 p.m., Showtime Championship Boxing presents an action-packed tripleheader as former champ Vladimir Klitschko meets NAVF champ the barrel touch of Sleek Williamson in a 10-round heavyweight contest.
01:19:51Also that night, the IBF Junior Middleweight Championship as Bruno Phillips defends his title against Kasim the Dream Uma.
01:20:00And opening the card undefeated, Jeff Left Hook Lacy goes for his first title against number one Sid Vanderpool with the vacant IBF Super Middleweight belt at stake.
01:20:09That'll do it for the Mandalay Bay as we close out another edition of America's Fight Night, the first Saturday of every month.
01:20:16For Albertstein, Jim Gray and our entire crew, Steve Albert saying so long from Las Vegas, Nevada.
01:20:39We'll see you next time.
01:20:41We'll see you next time.
01:20:49We'll see you next time.
01:20:58We'll see you next time.
