00:00Christmas is a magical time of year but it comes with a long list of jobs
00:12might be winter but you still build a sweat doing anything like this especially if you
00:20live in an enormous chateau there's a lot more work involved than we ever imagined
00:25we're following intrepid owners I am slightly anxious of those can stand up let's hope he's
00:32going to hold hold hold as they prepare for the festive season in France this is my day of fun
00:40we'll witness the highs they have Christmas the lows hunger forwards can't go backwards so now
00:49we've got to work out a way of getting out the joy Merry Christmas everyone Merry Christmas and magic
01:01look at the shuttle as they turn their castles into a winter wonderland Owen there you go Merry Christmas
01:09this is Christmas and isn't it wonderful today one couple face a tremendous task oh it's a bit tall
01:23oh Sharon you've got to get a star on while Christmas pressures spiral swing this around
01:32mind my paintwork and party plans we've got a bit of a smoky room here go up in smoke this is
01:42probably a hostess's worst nightmare in the winter sunshine of the Occitanie region of southern France
01:55France stands the historic chateau de la farde with parts dating back to the 12th century it boasts 35
02:07sumptuous rooms spread over three floors and stunning walled gardens thank you since 2012 it's been home to
02:23Christmas loving Australians Janet and Philip who live here with dog Bobby pretty puppy dog pretty puppy
02:32to have a Christmas in a cold climate at the chateau to us is everything Christmas should be about it's
02:40having this beautiful huge old house everything's on such a big grand scale Christmas decorations
02:49everything goes from little to bigger to chateau-esque and that's a lot of fun
02:58located two hours drive from Marseille the couple bought the chateau for 318,000 pounds and keeping such a
03:08huge castle warm in winter means the DIY doesn't stop at Christmas and this year is shaping up to be as busy as ever
03:22this is a big week for us and we have lots of guests coming for a Christmas party but the big
03:32thing for me to do is to repair the chimney in the other end of the dining room so we did one chimney two
03:39years ago it was great but not warm enough Carol's party is going to be just all local local friends from
03:49the area and we're going to do the Carol's actually out here on the steps at the front of the chateau and
03:56then the actual party is going to be inside in our lovely salon there a nice warm salon actually currently
04:04it's not a warm salon but it will be if Philip can fix the chimney in time we'll have a warm salon
04:10there's a section of chimney in the attic which needs to be rebuilt but first they need to check
04:21for blockages well that was pretty good actually I'm surprised what's it like up there Phil do you
04:28have a look now I'll get out first if you don't mind are you sure get off me oh gosh why the hell there's a lot of cobwebs up here
04:40they won't last long next here goes Janet lights a small test fire while Philip heads upstairs to check for smoke
04:52this really has to work but this is it's so important to make sure actually this chimney does draw do we
05:01have smoke yet I just smell it up here but I can't see any smoke come on the fire smoke up a bit come on
05:09oh so my imagination no can she smoke I can see blue smoke that's definitely a big plus
05:22I think we can continue on and rebuild the chimney here Philip plans to use concrete blocks to create
05:33the missing section once he's got them up to the attic that is okay you ready look out Bob Bobby Bobby
05:41Bob come here actually that's quite heavy isn't it you got it only ten more to go I think I've got the
05:51better end of the deal here they're not light are they once the heavy lifting's done Philip sets to work
06:02wow now that looks pretty darn good I think happy with that my next challenge here is getting around the
06:22corner in a manner by which it seals up nicely and those smoke escapes
06:28with the party in just two days time and the cement needing to dry overnight Philip has a long evening
06:38ahead further north in the beautiful Odienne département stands the fairy tale 19th century Chateau de la
06:55gruyere this turreted beauty sits in 12 acres with two grand salon and 12 sumptuous bedrooms
07:10king and queen of this castle a retired construction manager Tim and former district nurse Sharon who are
07:22gearing up for some festive fun Christmas in the chateau for me is joyous it's joyous because you can
07:31invite lots of family and friends and they can appreciate it and enjoy it as we do and I think he's
07:37having as many people as you can get in the chateau brings a chateau to life yes these buildings are
07:42lovely they're huge though but you need lots of people to have some fun in them and bring the life back in
07:47yeah that's what we're that's what we're that's what Christmas is located half an hour south of
07:55Limoges the couple bought the chateau in 2022 for 500 000 pounds this year I just got a swing to you
08:05mate they've installed a brand new pool it's almost unbearable to watch
08:12and built a luxury pool house alongside I'm brave it will be nice when it's done a few months later the
08:24pool house is now finished and they want to use it to host a special Christmas workshop for some French
08:31friends do you think brief making is something that they do in France I have to say I'm slightly nervous
08:37about making one because I've never made one before and when you see how everyone else does
08:43it they all look so beautiful can they look bad we're about to find out I don't think they can look
08:48bad we'll find out they're also planning a party in the chateau afterwards so Sharon's keen to make it
08:59sparkle and when you own a fairy tale castle there's no shortage of supplies I'm trying to make a garland
09:08so I thought it'd be quite nice to make the place look a little festive so this is my nod to arts and
09:15crafts and Christmas never done this before I'm using string I'm using wire I'm just hoping that it'll work
09:24so I keep lifting it and so far it feels quite sturdy but if we put it around like that and then I'm gonna
09:33string it to the rails up there she adds more foraged greenery and then despite an eye infection Tim's on
09:47hand to help with the hanging you know I have a phobia of heights yeah I do I do I do I do I do don't worry
09:56I've got it I have to kind of hold it and string it gonna be tricky in it they're determined to get the
10:05chateau looking its festive best and you be careful as well no you're all right got it
10:11so while Sharon wrestles the garland I don't know where to go now gardener Jean spruces up the grounds
10:23and the Christmas makeover is underway I think I've got the main structure and the main shape and the
10:30colors so I'm pleased with that so I think it will look nice we've got something to work with so it's
10:38getting Christmassy it feels a lot like Christmas around the chateau so that's good fun they may have
10:43finished the front door but there's still a tree to find and the empty pool house to prepare before
10:50their festive celebration coming up Philip's project goes down to the wire we're gonna test drive it the
11:03morning of the event and keep our fingers crossed and Christmas tree sizing dudes metal dude's mad no
11:12gets lost in translation 12 meters is 44 is it yes no wonder he had a heart attack
11:19in the Nouvelle Aquitaine region of southwest France standing proudly above the river lot is the
11:34stunning chateau de Césarac this historic castle has ten bedrooms a medieval tower and was said to have
11:49been home to 15th century river pirates after a devastating fire 14 years ago it stood abandoned
11:58until Brits John and Carmen jumped on board Christmas in the chateau is just amazing beautiful scenery the
12:08winters here lovely we're right by the river it's just stunning isn't it so many rooms to decorate which
12:13is great got a great big Christmas dinner going and all the family here champagne it's wonderful
12:20isn't it it's incredible you sort of have to pinch yourself a few times to say do we really live here
12:26doesn't seem real located an hour's drive from Bejerac the pair bought the chateau in 2022 for just
12:36175 000 pounds and last year they threw a historic Christmas party I could get used to this it's so much fun
12:48isn't it definitely cheers everybody this Christmas with friends coming to stay they've been creating a
12:58guest suite themed around the chateau's swashbuckling history that's a deep deep pirate ocean with their
13:08guests due tomorrow the room is still missing one important item but getting it up there you go upstairs
13:17and I'll lift it up to you could need a Christmas miracle come on Carmen push your back into it yes I got it yeah I got it not actually seeing this color against the wall so it's quite
13:32exciting turn it over straight on in oh lovely so you can see the base color down here is the same color as a wall yeah it works well
13:43ow ow the headboard though is even heavier swing this around oh my my paint work
13:53it's not but we can now drop this drop it down that side drop it down that side drop it down that's it
14:00that's it okay yeah I've got it and here is the big bit
14:07oh we're going that way are we I want to see it against the wall it's quite tall isn't it
14:15it's a big bed it's a pretty big statement
14:23one two three finally with an eye on elf and safety there's one last small piece of the bed to get upstairs
14:35hold on I've got to come this way a bit hold on a bit you've got that bit of wood there John
14:43I've got it okay one two three right we drop this side down yay
14:52at last there's room at the inn for their festive visitors
14:57but John and Carmen still have plenty more jobs to tick off their Christmas list
15:05a couple of hours north amongst the forests of Limousin Sharon's booting up for a festive mission
15:15put my wellies on now because I'm going to go on a little jaunt with John my my friend John and pick our
15:24Christmas trees after all if you own a castle with a 12 acre estate you don't need to pop to the garden
15:34centre for a tree we have quite a lot of Christmas trees just down here around the corner so we're
15:40going to have a look at those first and see if I see something that I I like
15:44there's some tall ones but they're not very bushy you believe it you've got 500 trees and you can't find one that you like Tim's still recovering from his eye infection but he's pining to be involved you think this one's okay is that 12 meters up three meters
16:0212 meters 12 meters is 40 foot yes and we want about 12 foot oh so it wasn't 12 meter no 12 meters

16:35the brush up on that French one giant tree narrowly avoided John sets to work

17:46now there's just the small task of adding some sparkle
17:51always looks nice immediately when it's got lights on doesn't it
17:55Christmas is in a couple of days time so we don't want to stress any urgency
17:59I find it quite stressful the lights are the worst bit I find
18:06that's a good job Sharon I think you're doing really good
18:09when you put all the baubles on it's going to look really nice isn't it really christmasy now

18:16with a lot of decorating to do inside and the pool house still to prepare these elves are going to be busy
18:24down south near the city of nimes
18:37philip is on a christmas mission to make sure their grand salon
18:41has not one but two working fireplaces for tomorrow's party
18:46having rebuilt most of the missing chimney section he's now putting the final bricks into place
18:56yeah that's good it might not be big enough for sander to squeeze through
19:01but the important thing is it's fine for smoke to go out of we now have to wait 12 hours to dry
19:07before I can test drive it so we're going to test drive it the morning of the event and keep our fingers crossed
19:16seems like a foolproof plan
19:21downstairs janet's whipping up a christmas surprise
19:26i want to bake something a little bit special for philip
19:31one of our favorite australian sweets is a combination of chocolate cherries and coconut in a delicious
19:39chocolate bar for our guests tomorrow i think they're just going to see this as a yummy little
19:45chocolate coconut cherry slice and i hope they all think it's delicious but as far as philip's
19:51concerned i really hope it's going to be a little taste of australia
19:58janet mixes condensed milk with pink food coloring coconut and cherries
20:04then adds to a pre-baked chocolate biscuit base all i have to do now is bake that for about 20 minutes and then cover it with a luscious layer of
20:17thick dark chocolate and then tomorrow we'll cut it up into little slices and philip is going to be one happy husband
20:24while the cake breaks and the chimney sets the couple have some al fresco festive jobs to tackle
20:34i think we're going to focus today at least on starting to decorate and tidy up the front
20:41of the chateau this little entrance area because that's going to be a bit of a focal point for our carol service
20:47first they want to give an ornate lantern a christmas glow up so what do you think well
20:59it looks like it's brass
21:02hopefully that'll polish up nicely while philip sets to work
21:09janet turns her attention to the grand entrance it's such a massively thick old door and such gorgeous
21:15wood all i'm trying to do with the wire brush is get off any loose little bits of varnish and it's
21:22such a lovely old door you want to preserve it i'd like to think for centuries to come
21:30not doing very much is it
21:34i'm wondering if the coating is a brass coating which has actually deteriorated that should have
21:41come up much easier than that maybe we're going to give it a coat of paint determined to bring some
21:49festive sparkle philip resorts to plan b it's looking gold that's a good start
21:59like many chateau jobs the rest of the painting involves scaling the heights just watch which way
22:06the breeze is blowing will you you might end up with a gold face yet then he has to put the blinged
22:13up lamp back together i think a place like this should have a gold lamp it somehow befits the premises
22:26it looks good from here shall we view we shall
22:29oh phil so much better darling yeah i'm pleased with that is it more christmassy it will be with
22:40all the decorations in place yeah it definitely needs more to make it look christmassy yeah
22:48with the halls to deck and the fireplace yet to test this pair are still far from party ready
22:59still to come there's a decor debate tim i think your style it's really pretty you're taking the
23:08mick aren't you now i do hang on a second is that true gratitude and phillips in hot water oh dear
23:17this is not good there has to be a blockage somewhere
23:20near limoges it's the day before sharon and tim's wreath class and christmas party and their chateau
23:35is as busy as santa's workshop today we have um tim's cousin nicola and her daughter-in-law jemma
23:45and jemma's mother karen so they've all come over from the uk to help us our main objective today is
23:51to prep everything the girls have done beautiful tablescapes and the mantelpieces this afternoon is
23:58to decorate the pool house so it's festive and welcoming and christmasy tim is finally eye patch free
24:07and sharon wastes no time setting him to work
24:10you know that lovely star that you made so i'm thinking this is a pool house at the end of the
24:18day it's not going to be santa's grotto forever so i'd like your star to just like lean against this
24:25we put the hula hoop here that i'm going to do okay and then we're going to have some mulled wine and
24:31mince pies so maybe we put the little table here yeah when you get something yeah
24:38watch my chandelier watch my star in my head i've got what i want to happen up here so i'll loop saying
24:49can i have this can i have that just really directing what i want it to look like direct to me
24:57yeah no change there then yeah the chateau grounds are providing everything for this christmas event
25:04and while tim and cousin nicola wrap ivy around the giant star they're nice long lengths tie a bit
25:11loose again and then you tie the next piece into that piece is that what you're saying
25:16sharon heads off for more festive foraging
25:21i'm taking this moss off this tree and again it's a treat to be able to do it out of your own
25:27ground isn't it you have to order it buy it from the local florist i'm very excited for christmas
25:33there's something really quite special about spending christmas in the chateau
25:37it's when the uh chateau comes alive really i think
25:42back at the pool house i wonder if anybody would notice tim is getting creative
25:48i think that adds something actually actually that looks good even though i sent myself i think us
25:58just finished the detail but i think she'll be very impressed with that what'd you think what the
26:05bamboo there yeah no so i think i got it wrong again while tim tries to mistletoe the line
26:13sharon adds the homegrown moss to her christmas hoop yeah to be particularly tight no no so if you
26:20wrap it round like that so it's almost round then it's easier just i got it and then i'm going to
26:26decorate it anyway yeah you need to put ivy around it all the way around and then put whatever else you
26:31want to put in it yeah they're looking good and it's starting to turn the pool house now into
26:38some sort of not santa's grotto but an area where you've got natural foliage we've got all these
26:45decorations going on you cannot help getting the festive spirit tim i think your style it's really
26:50pretty you're taking the mick aren't you now i do hang on a second is that true gratitude
26:56but i think it looks really you actually commented me on my star yes once both their handmade
27:02decorations are finished it's my pride and joy these two elves are full of christmas cheer
27:12i'm super excited for tomorrow i think it's going to be great fun up there i love to see people's
27:16reactions to what we've done with the pool house and just have a bit of fun together do something
27:21different and then come into the house have a glass of champagne christmas pudding job done i think
27:28very christmas it will be exciting all they can do now is cross their festive fingers that the event is
27:36a success further south in the lotte garonne department john and carmen's pirate rest bedroom
27:48is almost ready for their christmas visitors and they're taking a quick break from the diy
27:55to explore its historic namesake this is bonnegill castle rumor has it that the pirates that inhabited
28:03our house got so rich on the pickings from the river that they went and built and created this one
28:08we're not 100 sure but it's true but it makes a great story of course that gives us great inspiration
28:14to decorate the room in pirate fashion or at least call it the pirate's rest with a nod to the pirates
28:20just 10 minutes drive from the chateau the imposing bonnegill castle sits high on a hill overlooking the
28:31town and river below it's lovely isn't it oh wow look at the view now
28:42it's amazing to think that there were actual pirates in our chateau years ago it's it's amazing history and
28:48it's something we want to tell to our guests part of the history and story and mystery around owning
28:54a chateau most houses don't have do they but ours does mystery and history
29:03now it's back to work as with their christmas guests arriving tomorrow there's still a lot to do
29:10john has a swashbuckling task in the bedroom carmen's asked me to hang these swords up on the wall here
29:18and uh so it'll just make it a bit piratey
29:24right downstairs carmen's cooking up a storm so today we're making some pirate biscuit for our
29:35friends that are coming around for christmas i've added a little bit of rum to the mixture so i'm hoping
29:40that rum comes through in the taste i love baking at christmas when everyone comes it's really nice to
29:49bake things for your family and friends
29:56so i think that's it i think we'll put those in the oven and hopefully they'll come out nice
30:00while they bake she checks in on long john silver himself
30:09oh lovely what do you think looks really good actually doesn't it the swords aren't very christmassy
30:14but i guess it ties it in because we've got guests coming for christmas and uh we've finished the room
30:19almost and it's gonna be great isn't it yeah it looks brilliant yeah i mean important for us family
30:25and friends for christmas yeah with the rest of the room to dress and some festive flourishes to add
30:35it's beginning to look a lot like christmas here at the chateau
30:39over in the occetan region at chateau de la fard it's the day of janet and philip's christmas carol concert
30:53and nerves are running high there's so much to get through you have to clean in here i have to test
31:00the fire so i'm gonna run some smoke up just as a last minute check i am just a little bit nervous about
31:06they're relying on this second fire to keep their guests warm in the super-sized salon
31:17smoke's coming out this way where well right here
31:25is it let's put that down there see if that helps
31:30hmm that's not fantastic is it we've got a bit of a smoky room here
31:39it's not good right i need to go up the top then and see if i've pulled the right
31:45top off the chimney that's a lot of smoke phil this is probably a hostess's worst nightmare
31:51yeah no smoke coming out here the chateau is fighting back and i just wish it wasn't today
32:06oh dear this is not good there has to be a blockage somewhere
32:13i can't even see where it's leaking out anywhere philip will definitely be able to fix this problem
32:24whether it's fixable in time for a party this afternoon i seriously doubt
32:31oh i'm gonna stink their grand plans have turned into a nightmare before christmas
32:39well this hasn't been a huge success you know what um you draw a line under that now
32:45the show will go on whether we're cold or not yep
32:49with their guests due in just a few hours it's all systems go
32:57well we might not have a fire but we can have a bit of a sparkle
33:02and they have an idea to bring a little winter magic to the carol singing
33:11woohoo we have snow that's a real success
33:18there's just time for some final food prep with a little elf from their friends
33:23allowed to help what are friends for
33:28then they don their glad rags and warm coats as their guests arrive
33:35this is only the start of the party but everybody's looking very happy and seems to be getting on
33:41famously
33:44janet serves up a festive feast in the grand salon
33:48eat drink and be merry please
33:56and there's an important taste test for philip go on that's nice please no that's only a little
34:02bit yes but i'm saving myself for later i'm not gonna ask what do you think fabulous sweetheart
34:09really is it like almost like that delicious australian treat australian treat
34:17it's close is near enough it's good well done sweetheart thank you good enough for here right now

34:31once darkness falls they can get the candlelit caroling underway
34:36it's been a roller coaster couple of days but janet and philip have brought a little christmas magic
34:48to their corner of southern france i think it was a very successful night despite the fact that
34:56our fire didn't work it was a brilliant night the snow machine the caroling jats cooking it's what
35:03christmas is all about it's definitely been a day to count our blessings everybody seemed so happy and
35:11it was honestly so merry it was a really merry christmas surrounded by friends they can finally
35:19put their festive feet up and say au revoir to another year at the chateau
35:25still to come john's drawing his weapons now we have a pirate's flag on a sword and all i need to
35:38do now is just go up here and tie this on while tim and sharon you turn the lights off hope to serve up
35:46a surprise this is an english tradition of lighting the christmas pudding with brandy
35:59in the winter sunshine of southwest france at chateau de ceserac john and carmen's festive bedroom
36:07project is nearly finished and with their guests on the way the christmas clock is ticking got a few
36:15outdoor bits to do john i need to gather some greenery for my reef to make everything look
36:20christmassy in the pirates rest that should be good i've got a flag to put up when uh our friends
36:25come around they'll know they're going to the park rest and then finish off dressing the room get that
36:30finished and then we're good and we can uh do some cocktails and uh make it really christmassy for
36:36them i'm excited now it's coming to the end carmen heads off to find some festive foliage
36:43while john tries to raise the jolly roger i've made a little bit of a flagpole but the best bit is
36:49we're going to put the flag on a sword so i'm going to strap it all together and hopefully it might just
36:54look quite good a bit of fun now we have a pirate's flag on a sword and all i need to do now is just
37:01go up here and tie this on
37:06inside carmen's getting crafty
37:09i think we'll put that one round and then we'll go with my favorite on the top
37:16more berries required
37:20stick some of those in there
37:25wow i'm pleased with that actually
37:26one last thing i usually put something in the middle right let's have a look
37:40there i'm really pleased with that
37:42that's nice there's just time for a few final festive flourishes i just want to go a bit further this
37:55way so it looks a little christmasy i think that looks really pretty i love those berries oh
38:07oh that's better lovely we've done it we have finished it and actually in the nick of time
38:13because we'll be here in the next hour but uh hey hey hey what a job
38:21when john and carmen moved in this room was a burnt out shell with broken windows and blackened walls
38:31now it's been brought back to life as a sumptuous guest suite with beautiful stonework
38:44and crisp smooth walls the upcycled furniture and blue decor are a nod to the chateau's swashbuckling past
38:54and handmade decorations add a little christmas magic

39:13we're going in the pirate's wing aha we've got a special flag up there for you
39:18oh wow john this is incredible this was completely bare last time we saw it
39:28i love that color pirate blue honestly guys you've done an incredible job they celebrate
39:35with some homemade snacks special pirate biscuits with a hint of rum have a piratey biscuit
39:40nice good short bread and a warming christmas cocktail yeah plenty of rum don't go short on the
39:48run merry christmas merry christmas great to have you here oh thank you so much again for inviting us
39:55cheers it's really great to see dave and lay's reaction isn't it they love the room it's lovely to
40:00see how they reacted after putting all that hard work in and it's really nice to see someone else come
40:05in and actually appreciate it and say that it looks good that the christmas celebrations begin
40:11salute so john and carmen can finally hang up their tools and stockings for christmas
40:20with their chateau emerging from the ashes there's another year of adventures ahead
40:26back in central france it's the day of tim and sharon's christmas celebration the pool house is full
40:38of foraged greenery for the wreath class and they've decked the salon for drinks around their homegrown tree
40:48we're having a soiree this afternoon in the chateau and we're going to give them another tradition which is
40:53the christmas pudding which we're going to light so i don't i know they don't do that in france so
40:58that'll be nice and yeah from then on in it's all the way down to christmas now this caps it for us
41:04the end of the year at christmas getting the neighbors around friends around bit reef making
41:08few drinks yeah everybody's happy yes there's just time for the couple and their team of elves to add a few
41:19final sparkling touches what do you reckon java yeah i love it do you think it's good it's elevated it
41:27exactly took it to the next level seeing it now it's just magnificent it's a lovely venue really really
41:34pretty tim and sharon's cozy pool house has had a festive foliage spruce up john hello elaine just in
41:52time for the wreath making workshop so what we're going to do is we're going to make bunches so with
41:59each of these piles you can take whichever you like there's no rules except for try and keep them
42:06roughly the same size just have fun and be creative and whatever you feel is the right way just we can
42:13come around and we're going to help anyway so i'm going to do bunches and then i'm going to put them on
42:21i think that's the best way for my brain to work so lay that how you want it today if you want to
42:27it's going to lay like that that's it oh okay so tie it on tightly or in the knot
42:33look at everyone they're all really busy intent on doing it i've never done one of these before
42:38i've never been to a workshop so i don't know what to expect but it's lovely it's going it's going
42:43i don't know that's fantastic well done it's mine tim and sharon's homegrown winter workshop is a hit
42:55it's funny people start off and it's all very you know kind of controlled by the end it's wild
43:04everyone's like grabbing stuff and yeah getting really into it it's been lovely
43:08oh and you've got bells oh perfect say cheese
