00:00All right, this is the crossover brought to you by Bay Alarm.
00:04Getting Zinn for Guru alongside Stiney.
00:07I don't know if you did it right.
00:09Brought to you by Bay Alarm.
00:10Rest evil, we've got you covered.
00:11Bayalarm.com.
00:14Okay, Stiney, you take over then.
00:16No.
00:17I like when you drive.
00:19It's actually...
00:20A lot of people don't.
00:21Why do you do it?
00:22I just want to know why.
00:23Like all day, I was like, huh, why?
00:25We usually do one, like if Evan's in for a week, we usually...
00:28He just tells me.
00:30Let's say you want to host one.
00:31Just to break it up.
00:31Just felt like it.
00:32Well, the Warriors play tonight and tomorrow, so that makes tomorrow and the day after a little easier.
00:37So today, with not a lot going on, he'd just throw...
00:40Oh, hold on.
00:41Sorry, that's me.
00:42Oh, okay.
00:42No, just a toy.
00:43Yeah.
00:44No, we usually discuss it the day before.
00:47So yeah, we're at the cafeteria having one, and he was like, what day do you want to host this
00:50week?
00:50And I always say, well, what day would you like me to host this week?
00:54And he said, tomorrow.
00:55So today it is.
00:57Okay.
00:57What'd you have at the cafeteria?
00:59It was a pretty quick sesh.
01:01Yeah, just a couple sodas.
01:02Yeah.
01:03Yeah, we watched...
01:04No, no, no.
01:04Like, what'd you have?
01:05It's okay.
01:06We're all adults.
01:07What'd you have?
01:08I want to know specifics.
01:10I had a beer.
01:11What beer?
01:12Well, yeah.
01:13Narragansett.
01:13Narragansett.
01:14Okay.
01:14I always drink Coors Light.
01:16Yeah, Narragansett.
01:17Yeah.
01:17I find that stuff interesting.
01:18Cheapest beer in the house.
01:19Okay.
01:20Four bucks.
01:20Yeah.
01:21Yeah.
01:21I got no judgment.
01:22Cheapest bottled beer on the menu.
01:24That's usually where I'm at.
01:25I love it.
01:26So a couple...
01:27Four bucks?
01:27I mean, man, making me thirsty here.
01:31Four bucks is hard to find anything for four bucks.
01:33Pack of gum?
01:34I know.
01:34Maybe.
01:34Gallon of gas?
01:35No.
01:36Nope.
01:36Full-size candy bar?
01:37Maybe.
01:39A tin of Pringles, perhaps.
01:41Bag of chips if they're on sale.
01:43Half a protein bar.
01:44Exactly.
01:45Four bucks is like, man, that's a deal.
01:47It's not bad.
01:48You get a couple of Clif bars.
01:50Yeah.
01:51You get a couple of them.
01:52Wait till they're on sale in the aisles.
01:53Yes.
01:54Yeah.
01:55And I'll see you in the aisles.
01:56That's a good plug when they're on sale.
01:57Yeah.
01:58Didn't last night, which was kind of a bummer.
02:00I went in the morning yesterday.
02:01Yeah.
02:02Yeah.
02:03Anyway, hi, guys.
02:04Well, you always ask this when you tell me, what are you hot on?
02:07That's what I asked you guys.
02:09What are you hot on today?
02:10It's that he said nothing.
02:11The show's almost over.
02:12I got something.
02:13Well, first of all, before you answer.
02:14Yeah.
02:15And now there's more to what are you hot on.
02:19Okay.
02:21Guru hates that question.
02:24Oh, well, that's a fact.
02:25Why?
02:25Actually, that's the first thing I thought of.
02:26You know what?
02:27Keep it under your hat and use it at your discretion.
02:30He's listening.
02:30So what does he say when you do it?
02:32What are you hot on?
02:33You know what?
02:33You should ask him and find out.
02:35I can give you a little clip.
02:36Like, if you say, hey, goo, what are you hot on?
02:38Like, his first thing is, what do you mean I'm hot?
02:40What am I hot on?
02:41I'm hot on everything.
02:42I know about everything.
02:42What do you want to talk about?
02:43What do you want?
02:45I'm like, he's not wrong.
02:46He's not wrong.
02:47He will have DM'd all of us 18 different Instagram posts about God knows what since the last time
02:54we were all here together.
02:56Here, I'll try it.
02:57Ask me what I'm hot on.
02:59Pretty good.
03:00Not bad.
03:00That's a four.
03:01Solid.
03:02Or if he's in a good mood, he'll just kind of slyly lean back and say, what do you mean?
03:07Yeah.
03:08What do you mean?
03:08What do you?
03:09He's so funny with that.
03:11It's like this, like, I'm not being nosy.
03:14I'm just legitimately curious for trying to put together something today.
03:18Guru is to this station.
03:19It was nothing today, but.
03:20I want to say this right so it doesn't sound offensive because it's not meant to be offensive
03:24at all.
03:24It's actually a compliment.
03:25Guru is to this station kind of what kids are to parents.
03:32You know how when parents, parents are like, oh, we got a day without the kids.
03:37What do you want to do?
03:37And invariably, you will go to dinner and talk nothing but the kids.
03:42Yeah.
03:42That, like, they're present even when they're not present.
03:46I see what you're saying.
03:47Yeah.
03:47Yeah, that's fair.
03:48Yeah.
03:48That's Guru.
03:49And here we are talking about Guru and he's across the country.
03:52Not here.
03:52Not even here.
03:52And he won't be back until Friday.
03:53He hasn't texted us as much as I would assume this week.
03:56It means he's having a good trip with his family, as he should.
03:58Maybe.
03:59He deserved.
03:59Or a horrible one.
04:01One or the other.
04:02Yeah.
04:02He reached out on our Domino app because we play Dominoes against each other.
04:07So very rarely will he text me there because there's, like, a message part of it.
04:11And so we've been going back on the Dominoes app.
04:14I've got to see how many Instagram DMs I've gotten from him.
04:17I usually get two to three a day.
04:18Yeah, it's a lot.
04:20It's a lot.
04:21So.
04:22Anyway, hi.
04:23Yeah.
04:24We, I personally am hot on this Warriors home stretch run.
04:29Steph, it looks like, is targeting Sunday.
04:31We knew that.
04:32We talked to his coach yesterday and all signs point toward Sunday and everything follows.
04:38I would imagine that he, you know, woke up today feeling kind of okay.
04:42So Shams was able to have that report.
04:44So, like, tonight, tomorrow, they're games.
04:47And I'm interested because, you know, people in Warrior jerseys will be running around playing basketball.
04:52But for me, it all kind of starts on Sunday.
04:55Can Chris Stapps be back?
04:57Can Al be ready?
04:58Can Steph play?
04:59And then you get, you know, four or five games of, all right, what do you got?
05:04And I'm hot on this.
05:05Evan, I'm totally with you on the conversation the two of you had about Draymond Green.
05:12I am completely 100% with you.
05:15Oh, I'm spreading it out.
05:16Yes.
05:17Yes.
05:18Because, like, and just to kind of recap for people, you guys did a whole thing about would you have
05:25Draymond opt out and then give him a two-year deal?
05:27And, Steiner, you basically are like, I'm not touching Draymond Green with a 10-foot pole beyond next year.
05:34And I'm sort of like, okay, first of all, if you spread that out, you're talking about not next year,
05:40but the deal the year after that would be somewhere between $17 and $20 million for that following year.
05:50Yeah.
05:50I don't think that's a big, it'd be an expiring contract.
05:53I don't think that's a big deal.
05:54It's preventative of nothing.
05:56You could trade it.
05:57And here's why it's important that they do get his number down next year.
06:02I think it's going to be their only avenue to bring in another significant player.
06:09It's their only avenue.
06:12Like, I...
06:13So he rips it up.
06:14You give him, let's just say, two for 30.
06:18I don't think that'll be enough, but two for 35.
06:20Two for 40.
06:21Two for 40.
06:23And then you move him?
06:24No, those $8 million are literally potentially the tax difference that allows you to shop with your mid-level exception,
06:32which is potentially where you could get LeBron or Kawhi.
06:36And that, to me, that's the play.
06:38And I know that, Bob...
06:39Are we convinced that they won't have their mid-level exception if that doesn't change?
06:44There are tax rules, and that $8 million could very well be the difference into whether or not they're under
06:51it or over it.
06:51The bottom line is, that's...
06:54And the reason I kind of avoided it is because I do need to do a little more homework on
06:59this because I need to find out if, by him doing that, there is a tangible difference in what they
07:06can accomplish this offseason.
07:09I want to, like...
07:11It's funny because...
07:12I was under the impression they had their mid-level.
07:14They can.
07:15As Bono would say, with or without you.
07:17Yeah, no, they can, but they have to be under the tax line in order to have that, and that
07:22very well could be the difference.
07:24And I want people who are, like, pro...
07:27Let's think about the future of the Warriors to realize, with this take, I'm actually on your side.
07:33The reason I want Draymond to take a little pay cut next year and go do a LeBron or Kawhi
07:38is because I'm not interested in the Warriors giving up any first-round draft capital.
07:42None.
07:43None, none, none, none, none.
07:44And if you want to get a good player in here next year that's more of the 27- to
07:5233-year-old variety, say a Giannis, that's the only way to do it is to give up all your
07:57picks.
07:57And I just, I'm out on that.
07:59No, and I kind of feel like they are too, in a way, just because this season has showed you
08:03that, let's say even you get a big boy and you mortgage whatever,
08:07there's still no guarantee that Steph's going to be healthy, that Horford or Porzingis is going to be healthy.
08:13So at that point, you're left with, with nothing.
08:15I, I, the exercise is just because I, I feel like you kind of have to try to maximize next
08:21year.
08:23And admittedly, there's not a ton of ways to do that, but bringing down guys' number, and Draymond is really,
08:29him and Porzingis would be the two candidates.
08:31If you want to bring back Porzingis, I don't think he's going to be worth $30 million in the open
08:35market.
08:35So if you could get him for, if you get him on a one-year deal, great, but it probably
08:40would be a multi-year deal, two for 50.
08:43And then you use that money, like you were talking about, spread it around in different areas.
08:48You're not committing that much further.
08:50And then after next season, a Butler size contract comes off the books anyways, and you have a max slot.
08:56So I just, I understand it.
08:58It's for a lot of people, they just want Draymond gone.
09:00Like they're just, they're out on Draymond.
09:02And I understand that.
09:03But I think in trying to maximize next year, just next year, that's one of the only paths you can
09:11go down.
09:11Yeah, and I don't think that you're going to be able to trade Draymond and his 27.7 to a
09:16team that is going to give you $27.7 million worth of player that would fit better with what Draymond
09:22does.
09:23And Draymond and Steph together, I think a lot of us don't really think about it in terms of Draymond.
09:29We think, oh, he's washed.
09:30He can't do this.
09:31He can't do that.
09:32He's got to go.
09:32When he's out there with Steph Curry, and I think with Chris Stapps and with Jimmy, when he's out there
09:37with really good players around him,
09:38Draymond Green is still a very good player because he can play his role.
09:42You don't need him to do all the things that he's had to do in the last couple of months
09:46without those guys around.
09:47So I do think he can defend at a very high level.
09:51He'll probably be first or second team, all defense, and it'll be the 10th time he gets that.
09:56And so I think Draymond's value is still high enough to where, yeah, you don't want to pay him 27
10:01.7, but can you lower that number?
10:03And even if it costs you a year or maybe more on the back end, I think you do it.
10:08You think he'll be on a defensive team this year?
10:10I think so.
10:10Maybe.
10:11Yeah.
10:12I think so.
10:12They may give him a nod.
10:14It's not even only about a nod.
10:16A lot of it is reputation-based.
10:18Right.
10:18You know, think about when Wemby had to come out and say, yeah, defense is half the game.
10:23That's why I should be MVP.
10:24And Draymond's like, how come all y'all don't even ever think about that?
10:28I don't think that a lot of people, you know, fans, scribes, sports talk hosts,
10:32we don't look at the defensive side of it as much as we look at the ha-ha and the
10:37offense.
10:37He's also only one of three players in the NBA this year who will play 65 games.
10:42Yeah, right.
10:43So I think he's in.
10:46That's not a real number.
10:47No, it's not a real number.
10:48That was a joke.
10:48I would like to know how many, because I know not many of the MVP candidates have.
10:53So I know Podsy has.
10:55I do think it's harder than ever to evaluate defense just because of how many teams run
11:02up scores every single game.
11:04Like, and there's such lopsided scores, too, that I find it hard sometimes being like,
11:08yeah, I don't think the Warriors are playing good tonight.
11:11But then you're like, well, they, like, 110's not that much.
11:16Especially if you're going up against a team like, well, the Spurs, for example, tonight.
11:21Yeah, I think I make a distinction between the regular season and the playoffs, because
11:25I think the regular season and the playoffs are different.
11:28But, like, when the playoffs come, that's when I think we'll see stuff on a consistent
11:35basis with Wemby, like, oh, my God, he can protect a driver who's at the rim and then
11:44contest the three on the same play.
11:49Like, seriously, like, you can't do that, like, in the regular season.
11:54But in the playoffs, you can do, you can, that stuff happens more when guys are really
12:01given effort, and that's when I think we'll say, oh, my God, this guy, this guy could
12:06be the greatest perimeter-slash-interior defender of all time.
12:12He could be maybe both.
12:14Pretty scary.
12:15Yeah.
12:15That's also why I love, this is part of.
12:18Don't forget the legal, Evan.
12:20Oh, yeah, yeah.
12:20You're going to do the legal?
12:21Oh, this is going to wait for you to finish, but since Zion wants it.
12:24It wasn't going to be that interesting.
12:25Backseat driver over here.
12:26Yeah, he's loving the two-chair today.
12:28Anyway, you're listening to 95.7 The Game, Tate, KGM, ZFM, and HD1, San Francisco, and
12:32Odyssey Sports Station, always live on the free Odyssey app, and now broadcasting from
12:36the Laughing Monk Studios.
12:37Anyway, I was going to say that this is part of the analytics age that I like, which is
12:41that I can search around and find out what the league says and what the league thinks
12:50and how the defensive side of the ball actually works, because I don't think on TV and at games,
12:57most fans I know, and I'm among them, aren't watching close enough to really, really understand
13:03what's happening on the defensive side of the ball.
13:07I've heard fans, it's like, if your guy scores, ooh, you're getting cooked.
13:11That's not how NBA defense works.
13:14There's rotations, there's switching, it's a whole team defense process, and Draymond is
13:19still very, very high level at it, even still now.
13:23Yeah, I mean, like, and I know you're not saying this, like, there are ways to tell.
13:28Like, if you watch NBA games, and now you've seen it a million times where it's a guy goes
13:33into the lane, he kicks out to a three-point shooter, and then it gets passed two or three
13:40more times to another three-point shooter, and he's really open.
13:45Don't you love basketball in 2026?
13:47But that guy's, you know, like, against bad teams, that guy's wide open.
13:52Against good teams, yeah, there's guys still coming out there contesting a little bit.
13:58Like, that's, that's, here's my thing with Draymond.
14:04Draymond, he's, it's not about his game or the money, it's more about the identity of
14:13the team, and I just feel like if, if you have Steph and Draymond, and even if Draymond's
14:19not playing a lot and coming off the bench, he's still going to be the most dominant personality
14:25on the team, because then he'll be, like, almost in a coach's role.
14:29Good thing or bad thing?
14:30I don't think it's a good thing.
14:31Why not?
14:32Because of the younger guys that you're going to have to have on this team.
14:35You might be right, but we don't know the makeup yet.
14:38You're right.
14:38You know, like, part of that article, and Slate's, gosh, this is a great article.
14:43That thing was really, really well written.
14:45I hope everybody's had a chance to read it, but part of the, like, that was interesting
14:49that Steve Kerr talked about how he and Draymond have had multiple conversations this year,
14:55and he's like, a lot of that stuff, the emotionally driven stuff that you do so well,
14:59it doesn't work for this group.
15:02And that's why you're seeing so many fewer technicals.
15:06One of the things that I really learned from reading this, all of these, as we love to call
15:11them, the histrionics of Draymond, I think they're much more strategic and planned than
15:16people realize.
15:18I think people think that Draymond loses his cool.
15:22I think Draymond pushes a button and decides when he's going to go crazy.
15:28Most of the time, yeah.
15:29I do think that there are moments when he probably loses his cool, whether or not it's, you know,
15:35flail kicking Steven Adams or spin punching Yusuf Nurkic or choking Rudy Gobert.
15:41I don't know if he thinks, you know what, I'm going to choke a Frenchman right now.
15:44That's going to really rev up the team.
15:45But he might, he might, he might, no, he's, he is that, I think.
15:49Oh, there is a Frenchman on the floor tonight.
15:51Right.
15:52And if you have to get a step ladder, you want to choke out that Frenchie.
15:56And that's going to be a tough one, but I think you're right to an extent.
16:00And you've seen it a little bit in the last couple of months where, you know, Draymond's
16:03not as animated or that revved up because he is playing with youngsters.
16:07And he realizes, as we learned in this article on ESPN, that it's not going to work for the
16:13younger core for him to go out there and be that revved up.
16:16Well, he said, I can raise the temperature level of a gym in an arena, a team like crazy
16:24like that.
16:25Yep.
16:25I think to your point, Willard, maybe he has made a more concentrated effort this year
16:31not to do that because what's the point?
16:34I mean, this was also the guy at the beginning of the year that was talking about agendas
16:38in the locker room.
16:38And I think they were in a very different place.
16:40But the moment Butler went down and Curry goes down, he's like, I, I do think Kurt told
16:44him, Hey, did you, that's not what this team needs.
16:47In fact, it's, you're going to do more damage than good, you know, turning up the furnace
16:52on these, on the Guy Santoses or the Leonses of the world.
16:57Like that's not going to help us win basketball games.
16:59We're going to have a hard time doing that anyways, but you're really just going to get
17:03worn out.
17:03And maybe it's also helped him stay as locked in as he can along with the, it seems like
17:11the promise that he's been believing in since March 9th when the Curry sent him that text
17:14that he was coming back, that Curry is coming back and it seems like he is, or at least he's
17:19targeting.
17:20Yeah.
17:20Forgive me for the cynicism, but I also believe that that could be an indication that he knows
17:27it's over.
17:29And so Draymond was always a chirper and yet he was a four-time champion and he had his
17:36demeanor.
17:36They've been contenders for a while and he's been the same Draymond.
17:43If he's resigned himself to the fact that look, the titles are pretty much over.
17:47Well then guess what?
17:49You're just thinking about yourself.
17:50And I think, I think we've got some self-preservation going on here too.
17:55I, I just do.
17:56I mean, I, I could argue that, oh, so he's not losing his temper as much, must not care.
18:03You could argue it, but I also don't like, is, is, is self-preservation such a nefarious
18:09thing?
18:11I, um, no, it's not, but let's just, let's call it what it is.
18:14He kind of wants to stay around the league for whatever reason.
18:17Okay.
18:18And I'm just saying my, my, you know, and I'm not inside, maybe it'd be different inside.
18:24I'm just saying, you know, he's been around for 15 or 16 years.
18:28There's a natural, we, we, we tart, we talked about this year, four or five years ago, and
18:35it's going to be tough to change the, the, the character of this team, as long as Steph
18:41and Draymond are on it.
18:42Steph, certainly, I think you could start to change it with just Steph, but with Steph and
18:47Draymond, I don't know.
18:48Even if he's less volatile than he's been, he probably will be a lot less volatile, but
18:54I don't, more inviting of a different, but I don't necessarily think he won't be as vocal.
18:57Like he may be more vocal to his teammates.
19:00I think he'll be equally volatile when he gets his guys back and you get back into spots
19:05where they're big games and you need to ratchet up the emotion and turn up the heat in the
19:09gym.
19:10So to speak, you watch any pro golfer on a Friday when you're heading toward the cut and they're
19:15on the back nine and you're seven shots off the cut line, all of a sudden, you're not
19:19going to stand over every putt for a minute and a half, and you're not going to worry about
19:23every club selection.
19:24You're just going to hit and walk.
19:26You know, you're not making the cut.
19:27And I think that's a little bit of where we are with Draymond right now.
19:30This year is this year.
19:32Yeah.
19:32They could win two games in the plane and go win a series.
19:36They could win the whole thing, but it's not super likely.
19:38And so I think he sees this year for what it is, especially right now without Steph.
19:43And so, yeah, you dial it back a couple of clicks and you just try to see what you can
19:47do when Steph comes back.
19:48I'm not convinced that's a bad thing either, that he is still a big voice when there are
19:53new young players that are taking a larger role and he's taking a smaller one.
19:57I don't know that that's a bad thing.
19:59You know, there have been a lot of players that we've talked to who swear by Draymond's
20:04leadership.
20:04No doubt.
20:05And I know the Jordan Poole thing ruined that for some fans, but Jordan Poole thought that
20:09prior to getting punched, you know, like there was a period of time where he really looked
20:14up to Draymond.
20:15So I don't, I don't know that that is, I don't know that that's such a thing to be scared
20:22of, but all of this goes year by year.
20:24Yeah.
20:24Like I'm talking more about, okay, let's say let's operate under the assumption that they
20:30do this.
20:30Listen, now, now we know Draymond's going to be around for two more years.
20:35It's more about, again, like it's, there's an intangible here.
20:42Okay.
20:43So Draymond's role will diminish, but his locker room game will not diminish because anytime
20:51you're going to want to talk about how well the Warriors are playing or middle of the road
20:56they're playing or bad they're playing, Draymond is going to offer all that commentary.
21:01And that's kind of what I mean about giving up the reins of the identity of the team.
21:07I don't think you'll ever, as long as Steph and Draymond are here, it's, and this could
21:14be a good or bad thing.
21:15It's just always going to be about them and it will make it a little more difficult for
21:22younger players potentially to emerge.
21:25I see that at the same time, don't you think every time there's one of these kind of sort
21:31of introspective pieces or whatever, or we get to kind of a key moment, whether it was
21:36the Larry Markkinen discussion, the Giannis one, I always come away thinking to myself, Steph
21:42and Draymond behind the scenes are a little bit more self-aware within the organizational
21:49structure than we give them credit for.
21:51I think we could like, how many times have we heard on this radio station, Draymond would
21:55never go to the bench.
21:58He would go to the bench in a heartbeat.
22:00He has, and he would, and he, you want to know actually who of, of, of Steph, Draymond
22:06and Clay, I think Clay was the one who struggled the most with self-awareness and it's what led
22:14to what happened.
22:16Yeah, probably like, again, I'm, I'm talking more of an intangible, like, um, like I'm a
22:21freshman on a college team and Draymond's a senior or, you know, and he's rubbing you
22:28the wrong way and he's not as good as he thinks.
22:30And then you come back the following year and it's like, Oh yeah, Draymond's coming back
22:34for his fifth year.
22:36Okay.
22:37Well, but it's probably going to be a lot about Draymond then, and that may inhibit my
22:42growth as a player.
22:44Well, and then that, I think that's kind of how you feel about Draymond, but I think he's
22:48self-aware enough to know that if there's a player that is able to break through, whether
22:54it's a young guy or someone they bring in, like if they bring in Kawhi Leonard this summer,
23:00you don't think Draymond's going to be willing to have it help be Kawhi Leonard's team.
23:06I mean, I, I think so, but with, with young guys, it's different and I get it, but I also
23:10don't think that there's been a player that they've looked at and said, all right, like
23:15now I can take a backseat.
23:16So this is the opening, uh, midweek golf round of the year for me.
23:20First time playing midweek.
23:22So I got to get out of 212.
23:24Are you playing against my brother today?
23:26Not today.
23:26Are you playing by yourself today?
23:27No, I'm playing with Aaron.
23:28No, he doesn't do that.
23:30And I got to cancel on your way.
23:32The way you guys have been talking about Draymond, I, it's, it has made me thought,
23:36think about him differently.
23:38Just make him a coach.
23:39Then that's what you're talking about.
23:42All right.
23:43Hold on.
23:43Yeah.
23:44You got to remember to turn off.
23:45Remember to turn off your mic.
23:46That was the walk-off that you thought it was going to be.
23:48You also got to take your headphones out.
23:50You're just, you're a mess, man.
23:52Actually that turned into the worst.
23:54There are no bad walk-offs.
23:55That's like an Irish goodbye.
23:56When you go around the room and say bye to everyone, your mic is on.
23:59Your muff is still there.
24:01Yeah.
24:01Take care of your muff.
24:02I mean, there's still no bad walk-offs.
24:0525 years in the business.
24:06When you come back and talk two more times.
24:09All right, boys.
24:09All right.
24:10Well, okay.
24:11Will and Nibs coming up next on 95.7 The Game.
