Malaysia’s jailed former prime minister Najib Razak appeared in court as a Kuala Lumpur High Court rejected his bid to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest. Najib has been imprisoned since 2022 for corruption linked to the multibillion-dollar 1MDB scandal.

The court ruled that while a royal “addendum order” cited by Najib was not disputed, it was not legally enforceable because it was not issued in consultation with the country’s pardons board, as required by the constitution. The decision comes just days before a verdict is expected in Najib’s largest remaining 1MDB trial.
