00:00i have never seen a coach first of all there aren't that many coaches who've won four

00:46everybody though right it was it for everybody it was clear that he was going to coach and maybe
00:52win his sixth which he did but that was going to be it and then i already mentioned uh jimmy
00:57johnson and dallas where he won the two and then he's like nah i think i'm good i'm out that's what
01:03i'm saying though these people all had some sort of a hand in their own dismissal right or the end
01:10or whatever it was the owner the owner the owner who all kind of like you know and i like even in that
01:17even if we did find someone who's been fired like someone's asking me like because i was
01:22i was there when phil jackson left the lakers i was in the room he stood up there with his family
01:27this is right after the pistons had beaten the lakers in five and and phil's whole family is standing
01:33behind the podium before phil even gets there and i remember being in the room going
01:38what are they doing up there they didn't win what this is weird why are his kids up there
01:44and then he got up there and i was like oh wow this is it this is the the whole the whole thing
01:53crumbles from here kobe shack phil but um i'm also talking about simply the way a fan base feels about
02:02said coaches i've just never really experienced this before where somebody hasn't built up like
02:10look look at tomlin in pittsburgh right now and by the way he's only won one but look at tomlin in
02:14pittsburgh right now and there are people that would like the pittsburgh steelers to move on from
02:20mike tomlin but i don't look i'm not in pittsburgh but i don't feel this kind of vitriol around the
02:29situation i i don't i do not feel that it is this angry uh with regard to what's going on i think it is
02:39that angry in pittsburgh and then they go out and then they win a couple more games and it's like
02:43oh my god we're back at first so and that's that's football and sure that's all sports that's been
02:48tomlin though like he's been going like nine and eight and eight and eight and ten and seven for the
02:54better part of a decade they've been good enough to be relevant be a playoff team and not get it done
03:00and you know steve kerr he won a title four years ago yeah and and that kind of feels like 13 and 14
03:06right and i've said this a few times nothing will drive you more insane in sports than 500 teams
03:12there it's way worse than a losing team a losing team you get mad about it and then you accept it
03:19and you go oh okay we got we got some building to do we got some changes to make okay and you watch
03:24the sport more passively the 500 team teases you that they're going to be good like the do how have
03:31the giants felt the last three years fun annoying super fun right super annoying exactly because
03:37they'll they'll they tease you they'll win 12 of 15 and then lose eight of 10 right and then they'll
03:42score a run in a week and a half that's right yeah it drives you nuts so i understand that i like
03:49believe you me i don't i don't watch these games and go well that's a hunky-dory loss let's go get a
03:55snack like i was annoyed on sunday that was ridiculous steph to have that kind of a performance
04:01and have it go away i think there are fair questions to ask steve i think we asked a lot of
04:06them yesterday there's always more to ask we can't hold him for two hours but like whoa whoa
04:14this is this for me this is a lot this is a lot for for your four-time championship winning
04:23head coach but let's hear from you you know uh let's go to cab in the bay cab thank you for

04:35cominga thing because it it reminds me of trey lance and marco luciano like we were we were super
04:41excited for him high ranking high drafted trey lance and and then when we saw it with our eyes the eye
04:47test it's like oh it it doesn't look right and we had to move on cominga stance it's it's over man
04:54it's it's over like how five years like it's over and the warriors are a game under 500 mark i remember
05:02you said in a show like a few months ago it stuck with me that since the giants were under 500 we
05:06weren't going to give them any attention why don't we hold the same standard for the warriors
05:11all the more of the warriors yeah because it's early in the year i can answer that real straight and
05:16kev thank you for remembering that and dibs will back me up on this that was kind of i said that
05:21in about august late august it was like when we're coming out of summer the kids are going back to
05:26school it's the stretch run i'm not going to get any playoff fever or hope and spend money on this
05:32unless they're over 500 and and sure kev i'll do the same thing with the warriors if that's how
05:38it's going on march 15th i'll say the same thing totally fair yeah yeah i just i just think i i think
05:44what i really want to hear about is just i love talking niners playing some of the most inspiring
05:49football i've seen from them in a while i get it and that hockey team down in san jose is it that
05:54gets no love in the local media is playing some inspiring hockey so those those are the ones two
06:00teams that people in the bay want to talk about i'm i'm done with the warriors it's just oh it's
06:04rough well yeah thanks kev it's 27 games in and there's there there's i mean look i think the
06:12eight seat yeah and and and and like okay we're we're in sports media you're your fans um it's not as
06:20simple as who won the game last night let's talk about that it's not this is all storytelling we're
06:26involved in stories and the warriors are a story and they are at a certain point that feels a little
06:33pivotal as the trade deadline gets here like i think there's going to be at least one trade
06:37i think at least one trade that's the other thing about this organization whether you want to talk
06:43about kerr dunleavy or lakob one thing that i really appreciate about all of them they're not
06:48going to sit there and take anything lying down right they're going to keep trying when people get
06:52mad because steve kurt we're just throwing crap against the wall right right because what's going
06:57on doesn't work so you got to keep trying other things and think about last year where he was
07:02doing the same thing which was throwing crap against the wall and then he eventually traded
07:06schruder and slow-mo and melton and he wiggins and he brought in you know jimmy butler and so he he
07:13went from man i have 12 guys and i don't know who to play to you kind of finally figured out who you
07:18are going to play and this year feels like a mirror image of that one where right now you've got 12 or 13
07:23guys that are playable i suppose and yet you can't play them all so you'll get to the deadline and
07:29you'll find a way to package kaminga and one or two other guys to get somebody else in here who's
07:35better than them yeah and by the way to his point about the kaminga thing being over i would respond
07:39to that and go no it's not over i don't mean like if you think that kaminga's time with the warriors
07:44is coming to an end i agree with you but that doesn't make this over because now what happens
07:51there what what what are you able to trade him for right and and so it's a story it's a story and what
07:58does he do who knows what if by the way because steve kirk said today that uh that it sounds like
08:03jonathan kaminga tomorrow night is going to be back on the floor i can tell you jk has been great
08:08you know this last week as he's been out of the the rotation he's working really hard and i'm i'm
08:13going to reward that i mean he needs to be back out there i mean so i can throw a question at you
08:17right now what happens if he plays really well over the next month does that make his value go up or
08:22does that make you want to keep him uh both but it also makes you want to trade him does it the value
08:27goes up and you may want to keep him but you also may want to trade him i don't think that
08:32any of these things are mutually exclusive i think that we're just now in a another situation where
08:38it's like when you have your computer and all of a sudden your computer is like oh time for an update
08:43and so you're like okay and so you update your software that's what this is it's like kaminga
08:4815.0 where it's another update and maybe this time the the features are going to be something that
08:54you actually love and sometimes you update your phone or your computer it's like god i miss you
08:59know this i hate this or sometimes it's like oh cool this is a lot easier and this is better and
09:04that's kind of where we are with kaminga um i can tell you in my uh professional history whenever
09:09the company tells you that they're upgrading something i just prepare myself for two months
09:13some frustration could be yeah upgrade oh boy usually means things are broken for the next
09:18six weeks it depends on you know the company and and the system but you know with kaminga now
09:22we're getting another version of jonathan kaminga and now it's you know because kaminga at the start
09:28of the year was all right you're gonna start you played great yeah you got hurt and then you came
09:34back you got benched and then you got dnps and now it's a whole nother version so maybe this version
09:40will be like the early part of the season where he played the right way he scored he rebounded he
09:46defended we all loved him i i even said like oh you can't trade him now if you trade him you're
09:52gonna be trying to get him jonathan kaminga right yeah you're gonna be trying to get an athletic uh
09:57wing who actually fits so like what are we gonna get here tomorrow i am fascinated by the way it looks
10:03and not just in the one game but going forward in the next however many games or weeks heading to
10:09jk day on jan 15 like what are we gonna get this time boy it's like a christmas present totally
10:16um eight eight nine five seven nine five seventy um by the way uh 49er fans there will be plenty
10:24for you today uh greg cosell joins us in a half hour i think juwan jennings is a name that has not
10:30been uttered enough um with some things that are going on right now with the 49ers that we need to
10:36and want to talk out so we will um for sure but steve kerr's conversation yesterday and a lot of the
10:43reaction around it has uh has certainly struck a chord um dave in atherton is next hi dave thanks for
10:50calling willie and debbie hey willard dibs thanks for taking my call um i just want to say
10:57good for you guys for opening up the lines up to some disagreement um i got shut down this morning
11:03uh in the morning roast and that was kind of disheartening i had mid-sentence so i'm not going to
11:10belabor that point that's that's like pretty irrelevant um i think i think like just briefly
11:16touching on the johnson cominga thing i think that there's plenty of blame to go around but i think
11:21at this point um it's pretty clear that it's over um you know take what you want from his injury at
11:29the beginning of the season my personal opinion jk returned to uh i'm gonna i'm going to pout uh because
11:37he got yank from the starting lineup and and i think i think the world of his talent i actually think he's
11:43an incredible uh athlete i just don't think that the that the the dubs are going to facilitate his
11:50growth so i'm like let's let's move off of him if we can't do it now i do have one question
11:56for you guys yes sir i want your honest i want your honest opinion about this that's all we ever get
12:02about yep no that's fair um kerr said that he's not playing will richard because of seniority
12:10and you know the number i think the numbers speak speak to will richard's productivity um
12:16what what do we think about uh come on last year getting benched for quinn post or
12:24for clay uh getting benched by pod who both both of those guys were producing uh better numbers but
12:32they weren't the seat they weren't the senior so is this like well i just don't understand the dmp
12:38for will richard i don't understand yeah dave this is you know that's why you have frustration
12:43with her like what are we doing oh i don't and by the way dave thank you i don't mind frustration
12:49with kerr i'm talking about this has gone down a road of getting out of here is bleeping this fire
12:57but like i mean it is there is vitriol and normally i would like to tell you that you are like oh you're
13:04listening too much to the lunatic fringe and you're listening to like the small minority but in this case
13:09i do think that it's a larger body of the fans than it normally is because sometimes you and i
13:15and you call it the echo chamber and you're right you listen to like eight people or 12 people or
13:20texters or youtubers or whatever it becomes a thing but i do believe the anti-steve kerr group
13:26is larger than than maybe most people think and louder yes larger and louder now now to the will
13:33richard point this is an interesting one and this got a lot of people's attention yesterday which one is
13:38this grandy where's the one where he talks about how will richard essentially grandy's hot on yeah
13:44it's the bottom one essentially not playing because he's a rookie here we go you just can't play more
13:49than 10 or 11 and um you know we're we're uh we're getting healthy not not completely healthy but we're
13:56almost there so it's been it's been tough um not playing him because i'm a huge fan and a believer and
14:03he offers us uh stability and decision making good shooting so he's just got to stay with it
14:08right now it's um he's frankly he's sitting because he's a rookie i'm honoring what the uh the older guys
14:15have done over the years um i think that's good for uh chemistry i think this is kind of how it goes
14:21you have to you know guys have to to earn their stripes and and you give everybody a fair look and
14:27and then you um you continue on through the season so uh he could very easily find himself back in the
14:33rotation okay and and this got a lot of people because it seems to maybe butt heads a little bit
14:38with what he said about jonathan kaminga's dnps this was him responding to me saying hey i got people
14:46telling me that this feels personal between maybe you and the organization and jonathan here's what he
14:52said that's uh that couldn't be farther from the truth uh we treat all of our players with the
14:58utmost dignity and respect and and uh all we try to do is win and and part you know we i've talked
15:04about this publicly i don't think it's a secret it's it has been a tricky fit at times and uh you know
15:11he's a really talented player and he's had some really good moments and then there's been times where
15:16it hasn't clicked um the last couple of weeks uh it was uh it was a tough fit and so we went
15:23in the opposite direction just to try to see if we could find a little more rhythm and it's as simple
15:28as that i i dibs i don't know about you my my response to this is when he says will richard's
15:33not playing because because he's a rookie first of all it's not the first thing he said about it
15:38and then he circles to it and he says uh it's kind of a team chemistry thing i think it's good for team
15:43chemistry which that's a that's a winning characteristic i don't know if it's helping
15:49team chemistry or not right um but but what i'm hearing him say is that all of these things
15:55are temporary so when somebody goes hey we've got these numbers on will richard steve has not banished
16:03him he he's not playing right now that might change as quickly as tomorrow same for for jonathan right
16:11um and i think steve is admitting that he is searching and he is he is on a journey of of of
16:19lineups and he has not found it yet is that the fault of his i guess so that's his job it's the
16:26fault of his because of the results yeah you and i talk a lot about process versus results and the
16:31results haven't been there so then you look at the lineups and say well maybe you're screwing it up
16:35i don't know sure the idea of chemistry the thing i heard him say there is it's easier for you to
16:43bench and he's not being benched he's just not in the rotation but it's easier to do that to a rookie
16:49a guy who has no real expectation absolutely he was a second round pick who many thought were ticketed to
16:55the g league grandy and i talked to him at summer league and we both were like oh my god this this guy's
17:01got moxie and he's got confidence and he came out and he played like that and he played well
17:06and he's actually done very well but you're in a spot where you're a rookie and you're not going to
17:11play him all 82 anyway so it's okay to give him a few games off and then let maybe gp2 a guy who i
17:19think if you put him on ice for a long time it's harder to get a 33 year old or 32 year old back in
17:25the fray whereas a rookie yeah you know you're gonna sit for a couple weeks or maybe you go to santa cruz
17:30and then you come back that's how it goes bro absolutely absolutely like i know people get
17:37very mad when there's like politics involved in decisions i'm sorry there are politics involved in
17:41every decision every day all the time that like there is this meritocracy thing that everybody
17:48seems to want where like the warriors go out and play let's play all 14 of them and whoever gets the
17:54most points you like we're gonna play survivor we joke that we're playing survivor they're not
17:58actually playing survivor they're not going to vote anybody off of the team and then just keep
18:05moving through no it doesn't like he's searching for a lineup and they haven't found it yet and that's
18:12not okay and and so we can we can have that discussion but i don't i don't think that some of you
18:19caught him in the hypocrisy that maybe you think you caught him in yesterday that's my take i don't
18:26think you did i think you think you did wait a minute you said it's only about winning well who
18:32the hell said that will richard playing is definitely what gives them the best chance to win it's will
18:37richard he's nice i haven't ever watched a warrior game and been like can't win without will richard
18:44it's nice but i also have seen nice things from all the people who are playing that's the problem
18:53once you get to number four in the lineup it's just a bunch of i don't knows from night to night
18:59that's the thing and you know you want to talk about survivor and who has immunity it's jimmy
19:03draymond and steph end of list and you could probably throw pods in there too because pods
19:08plays every game and he plays all the time more than most fans want but beyond that the other players
19:14either they're old and not available or they're young and one-way players or they're rookies and so
19:21steve is trying to find nine or ten guys he can really bank on and he doesn't have that yet yeah
19:26i i get it i get how that made people feel but i kind of agree with you the comment about being a
19:32rookie was steve saying look i'm searching for a lineup i can't play 14 and i can afford to put him
19:40over there for a week and check out some other things because he's a rookie that's the way i took it
19:46i get it if you took it differently but that's the way i that's how i look as a guy who's coach
19:51a ton of high school varsity sports you have a freshman who is on your team thank you your freshman
19:56comes in and your freshman plays great and then you got a senior over there and you're looking down
20:01the bench and you're thinking well if i don't get my senior back in there then the senior might become
20:06a poisonous force on the bench or i might just lose him and when the freshman inevitably hits that wall
20:12or goes into a tank i don't have that senior to lean on anymore i mean this is part of what makes
20:17coaches great even when they have great players the phil jackson's the steve kerr's the greg popovich's
20:22if you will you want to talk about this like part of what makes them great is not these x's and o's
20:28that so many of all the system and the all part of it is managing the egos and i think that's what
20:34he was talking about right there will richard doesn't have one yet it's a second round rookie
20:39exactly he's part of the stay ready crew yeah and you had me thinking about uh willie adams
20:44because remember early in the year last year april and may he was really struggling but willie
20:49adams is a guy who plays every day so you're gonna play him every day because that's his comfort zone
20:55and that's what he always does but he's hitting 206 and i think you got to colorado and you finally
21:00were like willie i mean you need a day we're giving you a day and you're gonna have to have a day and i
21:06know he wasn't thrilled about it but then he comes back and he starts hitting and he's better and it's
21:09like sometimes you have to do these things despite players and if it's will richard you're a rook i
21:15mean he's gonna be fine he's still gonna play probably 70 games this year and you know what
21:20you said it he might play tomorrow he might he might um he's definitely gonna play at some point
21:27it's tomorrow right i mean they haven't played in so long i don't even know like small yes i mean
21:31remember when they used to play all the time how fun that was we all wanted them to get a break and
21:37now i'm like uh not enough games they've played twice in like nine days i know
