00:00Hey guys, we're here with the Hollywood Life Podcast, and we are so excited.
00:05It is the start of the year.
00:06Happy New Year, everybody.
00:08Hey.
00:08Happy New Year.
00:09What's January 14th?
00:09Happy New Year from my co-host, Allie Stegnita and I, and our silent producer, Nick.
00:16And we are so excited as our first guest of the year to welcome Jesse James Decker.
00:23Welcome.
00:25We're so happy to have you.
00:27We really are, and it's just so appropriate that everybody has made their New Year's
00:32resolutions, and we know what that means.
00:35We all want to get in shape, and a lot of us have eaten too much over the holidays, and
00:41we need to, like, I'm barely fitting into my dress right now.
00:45Oh, please.
00:46And you've had that problem.
00:48Like, you've had that issue.
00:50You've had three babies, and you've had to lose weight and get back in shape.
00:55Yep.
00:55So, tell us how we do it.
00:59So, first, you have to make your mind up.
01:01That's the first step.
01:02You know, if you're not really ready to make that life change, then, you know, it's not
01:07going to happen.
01:07I'm ready.
01:08I'm ready.
01:08Well, that's great, and that's the first step.
01:10You know, there have been many times after babies where I said I was ready to start working
01:15out and losing the weight, and you know what?
01:16I wasn't.
01:17I wasn't in the mindset yet.
01:18It wasn't the time.
01:19You've really got to make your mind up and go, this is what I'm going to do.
01:21You almost have to kind of just make it the – I would write little sticky notes on my
01:25window, like, you can do this, or window my mirror.
01:28Or I would have, like, goals that I wanted, like, okay, I want to have really strong legs
01:32again, like I used to have.
01:34So, I think first you make your mind up, and then second, you know, you make it happen.
01:38So, you really – I like to kind of keep a food diary, one of those apps that kind
01:43of – I log in the calories that I'm having for the day, and what's great about South
01:47Beach is they have a barcode.
01:48You can scan your barcode and kind of –
01:49That's the South Beach diet.
01:50The South Beach diet.
01:51I'm saying as if you know.
01:52Yes.
01:53So, the South Beach diet.
01:53And that really worked for you.
01:54I am the spokesperson for South Beach diet.
01:56I have been for a few years now, and it 100% works for me.
01:59And I'm one of those – I don't like to get behind things that I don't believe in because
02:03it just won't seem honest.
02:04I'm very blunt and honest about things like that, and it works for me.
02:10And I had it, especially after my last baby, I got on the South Beach diet, and I lost the
02:15baby weight faster than I ever did with any baby.
02:18It's like music to a lot of mom's ears.
02:22You have to follow it, though.
02:23Like, you can't – you have to follow it religiously, or it doesn't work.
02:26You have to follow the program.
02:28And so, you know, I hit my goal weight after my third baby, Forrest, and then, you know,
02:34I'm able to maintain with the South Beach diet program.
02:37But I will say, this past spring of 19, I gained 10 pounds on my tour.
02:43There was craft services backstage.
02:45There was catering.
02:46I was eating good.
02:48Yeah, and you're traveling, and you're not kind of in a regular routine.
02:51And I gained 10 pounds.
02:53And I was, like, bummed out about it because my pants were fitting and my rompers weren't
02:57fitting.
02:58But you know what?
02:58I hate that feeling.
03:00It's the worst.
03:01Yeah.
03:01But you know what?
03:02I, in the back of my mind, I'm like, I have South Beach to turn to.
03:05You have South Beach, yeah.
03:06And I did it, and I lost the 10 pounds.
03:08I remember I saw you back on tour.
03:11You were here at the Beacon Theater.
03:13Yes, that was so fun.
03:14And so fun.
03:16And I had talked to you then, and I was like, how do you maintain this when you have these
03:20late nights on the road?
03:21And you were saying how it is really tough, but you always have South Beach to fall back
03:27on, which I think is just, speaks to the program, too, that so many working women can follow
03:33this and can, you know, balance.
03:36Well, can you tell us for our listeners who aren't familiar with South Beach, like, what
03:42is kind of the principles behind it?
03:44And like, what are the basics?
03:45And what do you have to eat?
03:46So they have phase one, they have phase two, and, you know, they really believe in a portion
03:52control, high protein, oh, sorry, I'm not close enough, high protein, good carbs, but low carbs.
04:03And what's a good carb?
04:05A brown rice is a good carb.
04:07But, you know, I don't love the idea of cutting out carbs altogether.
04:11I love carbs.
04:12That's just me.
04:14I want to enjoy myself.
04:15I want to eat good food.
04:17But so South Beach makes it so that you don't have to give those things up, because nobody
04:21wants to give up things that they love.
04:24So they make it easy.
04:25Yeah, there's so many carbs.
04:25There's pizzas.
04:27They have chicken and rice and veggies that are so good.
04:29I mean, they have chocolate treats.
04:31They've got chocolate shakes that are protein shakes.
04:34They're toffee nut bars.
04:36I mean, they have these muffins.
04:38They have these sauce.
04:39I mean, I'm just telling you that I love the food.
04:44I really do.
04:45And I know their entire menu.
04:47Because you've eaten it all.
04:48I've eaten it all.
04:49I know all of them.
04:50Tell us typically, like, what you, when you're on the South Beach diet and you're in the part,
04:55the phase where you are losing your weight, like, what are you eating for breakfast, lunch,
04:59dinner?
05:00Give us an idea.
05:01There they are over there.
05:02So I will have their, they have this turkey sausage English muffin breakfast sandwich that is so good.
05:10That sounds so good.
05:11Oh, it's good.
05:12Turkey sausage English muffin.
05:13Oh, yeah.
05:13It's so good.
05:14So I'll have that for breakfast.
05:16And then I'll have, maybe I'll do a workout and I'll do, I'll have a protein shake after that.
05:22And I'll do the chocolate protein shake.
05:23There's about 25 grams of protein in there.
05:26And then for lunch, I'll probably have their Texas chili, which is also really delicious.
05:31Yeah.
05:31That's good.
05:32Yeah.
05:33It's good.
05:33And you know what?
05:34I'll sometimes add a sprinkle of low-fat cheese on there myself.
05:38Just, you know, spruce it up a little bit.
05:40And then if I really want a little snack, I'll have one of their bars.
05:45Their toffee nut bar is good.
05:47They have this really delicious chocolate nut bar.
05:49And then for dinner, I'll make something at home.
05:52And I'll have like a lean chicken and vegetables that I'll make for the family.
05:57And then if I really want something sweet, they have like these chocolate muffins in a cup that are really good.
06:04They have obviously a lot of their chocolate bars.
06:07But sometimes if I get a late-night craving, I'll have a chocolate shake.
06:11So it doesn't sound at all like you deprive yourself.
06:14No, no, no, no, no.
06:16That's the thing.
06:17Everyone thinks diet you deprive.
06:19Yeah.
06:20I got to eat.
06:21And I want to enjoy myself.
06:22And you're not hungry.
06:23No.
06:24If you're hungry, eat.
06:26You know, that's the thing.
06:27You need to eat.
06:28If you don't, if you're hungry, that's your body saying you need to eat something.
06:32And now we have coffee.
06:34And here's my coffee.
06:36Thank you so much.
06:37Yes, we found out that Jesse James Decker is a coffee girl.
06:42Absolutely.
06:43I love me some coffee.
06:44That's the first thing I'll have in the morning is my coffee.
06:47And I know it too.
06:48My husband gets up maybe 15 minutes before I do.
06:51And I will, I'll kind of have my, my eyes open and I know when coffee's coming.
06:55Cause I'll hear the grinder.
06:57Oh, so he makes the coffee.
06:59He grinds it every morning.
07:01And then I'll hear the beep, beep.
07:03I mean, it's ready.
07:04And then my feet will hit the ground.
07:06I honestly, it's so cliche, but I love the smell of coffee in the morning.
07:10Oh, it's so good.
07:11It does get my like blood going.
07:13Just the smell.
07:14Oh, absolutely.
07:15It's so good.
07:16And you know, what's funny is I think when you get up in the morning and you walk the
07:20streets of New York, you walk the streets of Nashville or go to the airport, you know,
07:24we're all so different, but we all have one thing in common.
07:28Everybody has their coffee in their hand.
07:30Yeah.
07:30Truthfully, look around you in the morning.
07:33We all share that thing.
07:34We're all coffee addicts.
07:35Everyone's got their coffee in their hand and they're ready to start their day.
07:39You know, I saw something yesterday that was on like Betches or something like that.
07:43Some meme.
07:43And it was like, my favorite childhood memory was having energy.
07:46Like I was like, yes, yes.
07:49You know what's funny though is I've been drinking coffee since the eighth grade.
07:52I have too.
07:53I was such an early bloomer.
07:55I think I was too.
07:56So bad.
07:56Yeah.
07:57We would go out for lunch when I was in high school.
07:59Well, I guess maybe ninth grade is when I started.
08:02My mom couldn't get me out of the door in time.
08:04So she would wake me up with a thermos of coffee and that was her way to get me out
08:08the door to get on the bus because I was always late.
08:10She turned you into an addict.
08:11Oh my God.
08:12That's so funny.
08:12She was like, there was nothing she could do.
08:13I was late every single day, always turning.
08:15She's like, you know what?
08:16We're done.
08:18Thermos, go.
08:20That's amazing.
08:21So now in terms of the, for the South Beach diet, so there's food you can order.
08:27There's a cookbook.
08:27And aren't you going to do a cookbook?
08:29I am doing a cookbook.
08:30Yes.
08:32I am working on this cookbook.
08:33It's almost finished, but it'll be out fall 2020.
08:36And I'm so excited about it.
08:38I can't wait.
08:39Yes.
08:40All the pictures for it are like so gorgeous already.
08:42They're so great.
08:44It was so much fun to shoot that.
08:45I mean, it was just like our normal messy life and it was just a blast.
08:49But the recipes are really great.
08:51Y'all are going to love the food.
08:52Are they South Beach?
08:54Like can they-
08:55Inspired?
08:55Yeah.
08:55Or is it more so like family in your room?
08:57It's my family meals.
08:59It's honestly a variety of everything.
09:00I do have a chapter in there that I called, I call fitness and it's my fitness meals.
09:05So there are things that whenever I'm dieting or being conscious of what I'm eating that
09:10I made a chapter about it.
09:12But I also have a chapter of kid-friendly meals that adults want to eat too.
09:16Oh, I like that.
09:16So there's delicious things like my mac and cheese or chili dogs or little things that
09:22I do for the kids that they absolutely love that instead of French fries or sweet potato
09:26fries and there's a certain spice that I do.
09:28So, but I have a whole variety of different things that I'm putting there.
09:32I'm finally putting my seafood gumbo in there and I'm putting empanadas that I've been making
09:37for a couple of years now.
09:38So just a variety of different things that I'm passionate about and I cook in my kitchen
09:42for my family.
09:43Yum.
09:43Sounds really good.
09:44I know.
09:44So that's fall 2020.
09:46That'll be so exciting.
09:48We must come back.
09:49I think we must come back when the cookbook is out and tell us about it.
09:53Well, so I think that also a lot of us are wondering how, I mean, Eric has been in retirement
09:58now for a little bit.
10:00Is he like one of those guys in retirement?
10:01It's just like, I'm just going to golf and like lay on the couch or is he like up and
10:05at him with the kids?
10:06What's going on?
10:07Definitely not the first thing you just said at all.
10:09He is up and at it and he, he's making the coffee first thing in the morning.
10:14He works hard.
10:15You know, he works at Kittnish now.
10:16So he's the president of Kittnish and he is helping me run the ship and he is amazing
10:22at it.
10:24It's been amazing to see that side of him.
10:26You know, he has such an expertise in business that, I mean, he got his degree in business,
10:30but it's been really cool to see that side of him that I never knew that part of him.
10:35And so it's been really impressive and it's a lot of fun to work together.
10:38Well, and you know, a lot of couples find that hard to do business together.
10:43Yeah.
10:43And so how does like, when were you concerned about going into business together and did
10:49you launch Kittnish together or did he come in after he retired from football?
10:54He came in after he retired from football because we took it to the next level.
10:58So I had had Kittnish for quite some time, but I never had it to this, like this level before.
11:03It was always kind of a small collection I would do here and there, but never to this
11:06level.
11:07And so I think it took off so quickly and it honestly like expanded overnight that he did
11:13step in and he needed to.
11:14But as far as working together, you know, we've always kind of worked together in a way.
11:19We've done our TV show together.
11:20We've done all sorts of things together.
11:22So I feel like we're used to working together and it works for us.
11:26We like working together and it's been fun because we get to spend time and I trust him
11:31more than anybody in the world.
11:33So I feel good having someone run this business with me.
11:37Right.
11:37Which is so important to have like basically a business partner that you can totally trust.
11:42Now you have the two stores, Nashville and Destin, Florida.
11:46Yep.
11:47And are you wholesaling as well?
11:49No, we're not going to wholesale.
11:50Not right now.
11:52In the future, maybe, but I think for right now, I'd like to keep it exclusive to my stores
11:56and online, but I do plan to open more stores and I have my eye on an area in New York.
12:03New York is where I want to open them next.
12:04Uh-huh.
12:05Yeah.
12:05Okay.
12:05Love it.
12:06It's happening.
12:08How would you, and what was, well, how would you describe your concept for Kittenish?
12:13It's so cute.
12:14It does feel so feminine and yet it's very empowered.
12:17Yes.
12:18I mean, it's a very empowered femininity.
12:20That's fun.
12:21You know, when you walk into Kittenish, it's pretty, I can't ever explain it until you walk
12:27into the store.
12:28It is very pink and pretty and girly and fun, but, you know, and there's pictures of me in
12:33there, but it's not just about me.
12:35There's posters and framed pictures of women that inspired me growing up.
12:39I have framed pictures of Jennifer Aniston and Britney Spears and Sex and the City memes
12:44and I have Sex and the City playing on a projector all day long and I have all these,
12:49I have a beautiful mural where people can come in and take their pictures and pretty
12:52woman.
12:53I mean, there's just, and there's all these little sayings on all of our mirroring, all
12:56of our mirrors that say, you go girl or you rock it.
12:59You know, I want it to be empowering and positive, very positive.
13:02Kittenish is fun and happy and positive and girly and everyone that comes in there just
13:07has such a great time.
13:08I mean, there have been times on the weekends where it's so busy where our manager will
13:12be like, can we, can we, we can't let them, it's getting too busy.
13:16This is not a place to just hang out because people just want to hang out in there.
13:20You know, we have the chairs for the men.
13:22So I guess everybody wants to sit down there.
13:24I have the two chairs for the men.
13:25Yes.
13:26So that they, they usually sit there that my book is sitting in the table.
13:30They crack through the book, look up at their wives and like, all right, what's going on?
13:34They'll take the pictures.
13:35Yes.
13:35Now.
13:35And I feel like too, that this, that the store and the brand really emulate who your fans
13:41are.
13:41And we've talked about this briefly, just that all of your fans are nice girls.
13:46Oh my gosh.
13:47Like at your shows, anywhere online.
13:49And you've seen firsthand, you've come to the concert.
13:51I've been so fortunate.
13:53I mean, they're just nice girls.
13:54And because you have yourself dealt with mean girls growing up and in high school.
13:57And so you've kind of empowered all your fans who are going through the same thing, which
14:01I think is so cool.
14:02Yeah.
14:02I've been very lucky.
14:04I mean, at my meet and greets, when I meet these women, I mean, there's so many moments
14:07that I'll walk away and be like, oh my God, I could be friends with that girl.
14:10So they're, they're all just sweet and they're wonderful.
14:12And I've been so fortunate to have such an amazing fan base.
14:16And I, I just, they're great girls.
14:18They're real girls and they're honest and they're just sweet and beautiful.
14:23And just, it's been, I've been so fortunate.
14:26You know, when you come to my concerts, it's an audience filled of like 1500 amazing kind
14:31girls that I feel like I can just talk to.
14:33Well, I think that, you know, you're presenting them also with inspiration because, you know,
14:40here you are, you're a young woman.
14:41I mean, you're very young and yet you've managed to be artistic, a performer, you're in business,
14:48you've got a great marriage, you've got three kids.
14:50Like that's a lot.
14:51And you're able to handle it and provide a role model.
14:55Like you're able to show it can be done.
14:58For sure.
14:58And I think sometimes people have a hard time believing that it is that way because maybe
15:03they don't want to believe it because they don't think it's real or possible and they
15:07feel like it's so out of reach for themselves.
15:09And I think that's my message to a lot of people is, you know, it is possible and you
15:14can have this.
15:15And I, I do have a great marriage and a great family and a great work life and it is possible.
15:21And so don't ever feel like it's not possible for you because it is, you know, you just have
15:25to be positive and spread goodness into the university, university, the universe.
15:30And I, it really, I believe that it's real for every, everybody.
15:35Do you think you and Eric would do a TV show again?
15:38Cause that's really where the fans got to know and completely fall in love with you.
15:42I knew you from when I look so good without you.
15:44I love it.
15:45It's a blast.
15:46I love it.
15:46And my cowboy, but a lot of people got to know you on the show.
15:49They did, you know, and that was fun.
15:51We did three seasons of it.
15:53We took a break between two and three because I didn't really want to do it again.
15:57Because as, as, as open book as I am, there's also a side of me that's very private and I
16:02find, you know, family sometimes just to be, it's private, you know, there's some, there
16:07should be something that's left for you.
16:09And so when it came to TV, sometimes I, I, I loved being able to have fun and showcase
16:15our, our love together.
16:17But I did struggle sometimes with, is this too much, you know?
16:21Um, and shouldn't this be kept maybe just for us?
16:24And so, do you know what I mean?
16:26Yeah, absolutely.
16:27Then when it comes to kids now too.
16:28Yeah.
16:29And I'm, I'm, and I, I'm protective of my children in that, in that way.
16:32But I do believe that TV is in the future for us and I am working on a project right
16:37now in the food space.
16:39So, you know, I think when there's a focus like that, I'm comfortable, you know, showcasing
16:44that side and that family element, because I feel like it's, there's no drama.
16:49It's just, you know, a happy family making food in the kitchen and, and, you know, wanting
16:54to share a meal with, with you guys.
16:57Well, so, I mean, a lot of, um, so much of your life is your family.
17:02And so how, what are your tips or what's your advice on making a marriage work?
17:09Like what makes you and Eric so strong?
17:12I think, um, truthfully, we, we see the world the same way.
17:17Um, we have the same beliefs.
17:19And I just think sometimes for us, I just think that it started off in a great way where
17:26there wasn't any, um, well, I don't think we should raise our children this way or this
17:31or that.
17:32We just saw, we see the world very similarly.
17:34So we get along so well.
17:35We like the same things.
17:36We like the same foods.
17:37We like to travel.
17:39We, we just have so much in common.
17:41So I think that was a great foundation.
17:43But I think that, you know, what's important to us is our kids and what's real and on our
17:49family and, and loving each other.
17:52And I think when you make that the focus in life, I think that devotion.
17:55And yeah, each other, you know, and all this stuff is great.
17:58All this is fun.
17:59And, but the main focus is our children and our relationship and our family.
18:05And so I think when that is what is the most important thing to you, I think all the other
18:11things that it just, it's, I don't know, I don't know how to describe it, that we just
18:15share the same vision of, of, of life.
18:17And I think that's what works for us.
18:19But on another level, we, we just, you know, we communicate in a, in a way where we respect
18:26each other.
18:27So if there's something we don't necessarily agree in, we just have a conversation about
18:31it and we work through it.
18:32I'm messy.
18:33He's not.
18:34I will leave my towels or I'll put the dishes wrong in the dishwasher and the dishwasher.
18:39And, you know, there, there, we have things all the time, but we communicate with each
18:44other because we respect each other.
18:46Did you, when you first met, was it love at first sight?
18:52Um, I don't know if it was necessarily love at first sight, but I felt something.
18:57I was like more scared with him, with other relationships.
19:00How did, how did you meet for those of, we were introduced through a friend, which is
19:05how a lot of people meet.
19:06Yeah, we were set up through a friend, but I, um, with any other, any person I was dating
19:11or I would just, you know, go on, go all in, be like, yeah, let's like, you know, I
19:15was, it was easy.
19:16But with Eric, I was so like nervous and hesitant because I think I knew like this was something
19:23serious.
19:24Like I was really, really, I was like worried about my heart.
19:28Like, oh my gosh, like I, I'm scared to fall in love with this guy because this, I
19:33mean, there's something with him.
19:35So I think I was more guarded.
19:36Well, I mean, he is really cute.
19:38He's so, I, I know, I know he really is, but I was more guarded.
19:43He was not, he was all in, jumped right in.
19:45And I was a little bit more guarded because I just was like, this is too good to be true.
19:49But then it ended up being as, as true as it is.
19:52And it's been, we've been together for nine years now and it's just nine years next month.
19:56And it's just crazy to think that we've been together for almost a decade now.
20:00Wow.
20:01So when he first met you, he was immediately like, let's go out, let's get together.
20:05Like he was.
20:06Oh yeah.
20:07I mean, after the first time we met, he told me that he didn't want me to talk to anybody
20:12else.
20:12He's not going to talk to anybody else.
20:13And he just wants to make this exclusive.
20:16Well, that's amazing.
20:18Cause that doesn't happen a lot.
20:19Does it, Allie?
20:20Does he have friends?
20:21He jumped right in.
20:23He does.
20:24But he wasn't really like that before too.
20:26But I think when you know, you know, but he jumped in and my response was like, oh, well,
20:31I mean, I couldn't believe these words.
20:33I'm like, wow, this is too good to be true.
20:35Like what's the catch?
20:36But yeah, but you know what?
20:38He, and I think that's what I liked about Eric is he was just genuine.
20:41He's a genuine person and he means what he says and he says what he means and he's, and
20:45he sticks to his word.
20:46And so I, it's just a really honorable guy.
20:49So girl, young woman out there, hold out until you meet.
20:54I'm listening.
20:55You, well, well, seriously, you have to hold out.
20:58You deserve it.
20:59You deserve to find the right guy.
21:01Don't settle.
21:02And you just, you know, you deserve the right person in your life.
21:06Everyone deserves love.
21:08Absolutely.
21:09Well, we are so happy to have had you here today.
21:13Allie is smiling like crazy.
21:15She's like, yes.
21:15Jessie is literally one of my favorite people on earth.
21:19I have had like, she's truly like what you see is what you get with her.
21:24And I've been a fan of hers.
21:26And now I consider her like, just, I see her often and I just, I, it's always a treat.
21:32And I just love seeing you succeed in everything.
21:35Can I just ask one last question?
21:37Cause I realized what, what kind of a workout do you do?
21:40Cause no, seriously, like we, okay, we know we got to try the South beach diet cause that
21:44works.
21:45But for, I mean, you work out a lot too.
21:48Are you having, I go through waves.
21:50Okay.
21:50So when I am dedicated to working out, I do circuit training.
21:53We work out a lot of booth camp in Nashville, which is Sean Booth's, um, workout place.
21:58Oh yeah.
21:59He's a really great trainer.
22:00Actually he'll train me and Eric from time to time.
22:02Um, but I like to do circuit training.
22:04I like to get in and get out and do a really intense sweat.
22:06I like with lifting weights, um, you know, I like to get my heart rate going, but I don't
22:13like to spend a lot of time in the gym.
22:14So I think 30 to 45 minutes is all I need.
22:16And if I don't have time to get to the gym, I'll do maybe a hundred lunges up and down
22:20my hallway while I'm on the phone doing some work while the baby's sleeping.
22:24You know, I try to get in when I can.
22:26And the 30 to 45 minutes involves both cardio, like in your circuit, you have some cardio
22:31and weights.
22:32So, you know, Sean will have us get on the bike for, you know, 30 seconds, really, really
22:37fast and try to, you know, and then you'll get off and then you'll, you'll do punch a
22:42bag or one of those things.
22:43I mean, it's fast.
22:45You have to keep going.
22:46You have to keep your heart rate going.
22:47And how many times a week will you do that?
22:49One a minute, two to three times a week.
22:52Okay.
22:52Yeah.
22:53But if I'm chilling, you know, none of it.
22:56Never.
22:57I will.
22:57You must do it enough.
22:58You look fabulous.
22:59Thank you so much.
23:00Okay, so Jesse James Decker, thank you so much.
23:04And thanks for coming to tell us about South Beach Diet.
