00:30the match both of them are keeping score juan scored 15 points and maria scored 9 points
00:38and juan made the following note this is how juan kept track of the points in the match as you can
00:43see in the image he put in this case here nine tally marks for maria and here he put 15 tally marks for
00:51himself which were the points he scored in the next match juan scored only seven points and maria
01:00scored 12 points but this time it was maria who kept score but noticed that she recorded it differently
01:08what did maria do she used a bit of juan's idea and started making tally marks here and she would
01:15draw a diagonal line notice that with each mark she made here and on the fourth she closes the diagonal
01:22with one more making five so what did mary do maria grouped the numbers in the shape of five like this
01:30when she closed five dashes that is five points she closes it with a diagonal line forming five so you
01:37can visualize it in a much easier and faster way you look here so maria scored 12 points because 5
01:44plus 5 equals 10 plus 2 12 and juan scored 7 points 5 plus 2 equals 7 so notice that it becomes much
