Firstly, a warning our coverage tonight contains distressing material. Bondi gunman Naveed Akram has been charged over Sunday’s terrorist attack. He faces 15 counts of murder and 40 counts of wounding with intent to murder. The development came as the first funerals are held for the victims. Rabbi Eli Schlanger has been remembered as "one of the purest and most sincere people" the Jewish community has known.

00:07Rabbi Eli Schlanger's casket was taken inside in the careful hands of the community he cared so much for,
00:19as his loved ones found comfort in each other's arms.
00:22Today we're here to mourn and honour our beloved Eli.
00:26One of the purest and most sincere and compassionate people any of us have known.
00:31Like many of the people in this place of worship, the 41-year-old was celebrating the first night of Hanukkah on Sunday,
00:38when he was shot dead by terrorists at Bondi Beach.
00:42We are here, raw and devastated, crying in unbearable pain in the wake of the horrific terrorist attack.
00:54Some of the grief was so raw, we've decided not to show you.
00:58Hundreds gathered to pray for the father of five, who welcomed a new baby with his wife just two months ago.
01:05He also shared a special bond with his father-in-law.
01:09It is unthinkable that we talk about you in the past tense.
01:18Rabbi Ullman described how his son-in-law looked after his family as well as strangers,
01:23visiting patients in hospital and people in jail.
01:27He would drive three or four hours each way to visit one single prisoner.
01:32And he would have weekly Zooms with them.
01:36Mourners paid tribute through prayer.
01:39And as the service neared an end, they heard from Rabbi Eli in a message that was never meant for this moment.
01:49To my fellow Eden, this year has been incredibly difficult for all of us.
01:58We've suffered tremendously.
02:00Yet on the other hand, we have witnessed the mighty hand of God.
02:04Rabbi Eli urging Jewish Australians to fight back against anti-Semitism with joy and pride.
02:10His final message before the journey began to his final resting place.

02:43Before Jewish leaders led the way.
02:48The procession stretching through the streets of Bondi,
02:52in an outpouring of love for one of 15 innocent lives lost.
